Thad Bell from the Kansas City Soccer Journal is joined by Daniel Sperry from the KC Star for a new episode of keeping Current with Kansas City. The Current played well in the Challenge Cup, finishing first in the Central Division, and earning the second seed in the Challenge Cup knockout round. The hope was that the Current would come out strong in the last part of the regular season but they only managed a 1-1 draw in Houston. They have a tough road to make the playoffs. Sporting KC smashed San Jose with a three-goal shutout and get a massive confidence boost. Which they need badly with St. Louis City coming to town this weekend. Plus we talk KC Current and the increasingly gross situation with the Royal Spanish Football Federation. When Johnny Russell officially becomes a Sporting KC Legend, that spot of the wall should have nothing more than three letters emblazoned up on it. J F R Who will play if Johnny is out? Plus we cover Tim Melia's amazing return, and enjoy all the highs from the win. The Current dropped much needed points and have made their room for error is nearly gone. Back at it again with another Shades of Blue! This time, Thad, Robert, and David are joined by special guest (and hometown hero), Seth Sinovic. Seth, along with a number of former teammates, are back in town to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the 2013 MLS Cup trophy. The guys ask Seth all the crucial questions from that 2013 run: did the MLS Cup get him any dates? Who complained the most about the cold during MLS Cup? What is Matt Besler's most annoying trait? Most importantly, Seth answers the question we all need to know: will he be taking the field at left back once again to help push Sporting Kansas City into the playoffs?

Lionel Messi has already won a trophy with Inter Miami after a 10-round, penalty kick thriller over Nashville SC in the Leagues Cup Final. This show had a lot of animosity towards this tournament, but it officially won us over. There are ways to improve this going forward, but with the help of the best player of all time, the Leagues Cup was a massive hit. Sporting KC has nine games left to right the ship and get into the playoffs. 27 points on the board mean a lot can change, but the margin for error is thin. The next two matches are at home against San Jose and St. Louis and the remaining schedule is full of contenders. SKC simply MUST start off the final stretch on the right foot. The Spanish Women's National Team won the World Cup over England, in spite of all the problems between the players and the federation. It's a truly wild story, and incredible those women were able to overcome all of it to win. But the federation took a jab before the players had left the field. The Current and SKCII picked up 1-0 wins. Benny's Boys are in fourth place at the moment. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

After the US Women's National Team crashed out of the World Cup by way of penalty kicks, it's become clear PK's are stupid. How do we fix it? Old school MLS style shootouts? Set pieces? The Americans dominated Sweden in regulation. The first shot on goal from the Swedish side was in the 85th minute. But they let us down with some ugly kicks from the spot and a heartbreaking goal-line technology winner. Where do they go from here? What's next for Vlatko? The KC Current finished their group of the Challenge Cup with the top spot. Kristen "Hammy" Hamilton notched a brace in the 3-0 win over Racing Louisville. Don't mess around with Ruth Langmore. We listen to a story from the BSI Podcast about our new favorite coach, Veljko Paunović, who gave us the soundbite of the year last week. Sporting KC were hammered by Toluca 4-1. They now get a three-week break to prepare for a battle to make the playoffs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Whoever doubted the Leagues Cup!? Sporting KC advanced out of a very difficult group featuring the two current best teams in MLS and Liga MX. And they did it with a very impressive 1-0 win over Chivas, while missing their start striker. We hear all the accents with postgame audio from Johnny Russell, Remi Walter, Peter Vermes, and our favorite soundbite of the year from Chivas head coach Veljko Paunovic. The USWNT advanced the Knockout Round of the Women's World Cup after being saved by the post in a scoreless draw with Portugal. Friend of the show and Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski is taking a lot of heat for the subpar performance thus far. What needs to change? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Huw Williams joins Thad Bell from the Kansas City Soccer Journal to review the US Women's National team's draw with the Netherlands at the 2023 World Cup. After a 3-0 win versus Vietnam in the first match of the group stage, Vlatko Andonovski's team played to a 1-1 draw. It was a rematch of the 2019 final against a very good team. The US did not have a good first half but they were definitely better in the second half. Was it the lone sub (yes we discuss that), a change in tactics (a bit) or the US getting mad? Especially Horan. Andonovski went with the same lineup. We discuss possible alternatives. The US is coached by Kansas City resident Vlatko Andonovski. Williams and Andonovski worked together in the NWSL and in local soccer. The USWNT faces Viet Nam, Portugal, and the Netherlands in the group stage and Williams talks about what the United States faces with each one. USA: 1-Alyssa Naeher; 23-Emily Fox, 4-Naomi Girma, 8-Julie Ertz, 19-Crystal Dunn; 17-Andi Sullivan, 10-Lindsey Horan (Capt.), 9-Savannah DeMelo (16-Rose Lavelle, 46); 11-Sophia Smith, 13-Alex Morgan, 20-Trinity Rodman Substitutes not used: 18-Casey Murphy, 21-Aubrey Kingsbury, 2-Ashley Sanchez, 3-Sofia Huerta, 5-Kelley O’Hara; 6-Lynn Williams, 7-Alyssa Thompson, 12-Alana Cook, 14-Emily Sonnett, 15-Megan Rapinoe, 22-Kristie Mewis Head coach: Vlatko Andonovski Learn more about your ad choices. The loss that was a draw against FC Cincinnati on Sunday was yet another painful result after being in a winning position. It's a trend for Sporting KC for years now, but it's hitting harder this season. SKC has dropped more points from winning positions than anyone in Major League Soccer. Where are you pointing the finger after the latest disappointment? Messimania has taken over MLS. Is it too much? Can there be "too much" for the Greatest Player of All Time? The USWNT kicked off the World Cup with a 3-0 win against Vietnam. A much younger US squad than the final four years ago will take on the Netherlands on Wednesday night. Huw Williams joins Thad Bell from the Kansas City Soccer Journal to review the US Women's National team's win over Vietnam at the 2023 World Cup. The first match of the group stage was a 3-0 win for Vlatko Andonovski's team. Sophia Smith led the US Women's National Team with two goals and an assist but was she the best player in the game? Was it a good result or just good enough? A different lineup than many expected, Julie Ertz played center back, Demelo started were a couple of the surprises. Everyone survived the media game last week without too many bruised egos. David breaks it all down and gives us in-depth analysis for each of us. Sporting KC dropped points that night against RSL. That was before losing 2-1 in Austin on Saturday. Peter Vermes was pretty open with his post-game comments, openly calling out the shot stopping and defense. Is this the end of Kendall McIntosh? Sporting Kansas City twice had the lead and twice gave up the equalizer late in each half. David Greenwald, Robert Rusert and Thad Bell talk about the draw with the Houston Dynamo. The lack of offense from anyone not named Gadi or Alan is a topic and the defensive lapses in stoppage time that robbed KC of 3 points. While not affecting the score, the fact that Ferreira escapes with a yellow after a big shove on Gadi Kinda is a topic.
Sporting KC's odds to make the playoffs are on the rise. will thet make it? is 61% to make the playoffs per 538. 52% to make round 1. The standings still look tough for SKC. Is Guti the depth SKC needs? Will Ballisager add the needed defense the Current needs? And what took them so long? We figure out what went wrong in Sporting KC's 1-0 loss to the Chicago Fire. KC has come back down to earth with a 1-2-2 record in the June. Dany Rosero's absence made a big impact in the physical battle on set pieces, as well as with our old friend Kei Kamara. Daniel Salloi has gone quiet the past couple games, and we need more from our star player. It's time to switch back to Pulskamp in goal. If he's the man for the future he needs the experience. There were some boo's heard on the broadcast when Khiry Shelton was subbed into the match. But are the fans angry at Khiry, or Peter Vermes? Sporting KC fell 2-1 at the hands of the defending champs, LAFC, on Saturday night to end a four-game unbeaten run. We start off our conversation on the topic of diving and referees. Daniel Salloi was denied a penalty for staying on his feet. Are referees incentivizing players to dive? We look at the tactics, what went wrong, and Khiry Shelton at right back. Additionally, Erik Thommy was deployed on the wing for the first time in KC. The MLS standings are still looking much nicer for SKC, although they're back below the playoff line. We're reflecting on a big week in the world of soccer after the Champions League Final, the Messi news, and a statement performance from Sporting KC to climb back above the MLS playoff line. Robert Castellanos turned in his best ever performance after Cody said he was terrible. Also Tim Leibold: hot or not? Alan Pulido has clicked into gear just at the right time. With Chivas sniffing and rumors swirling, Sporting KC must decide soon what to do with their star striker. If he keeps this up, pay that man his money. Lionel Messi coming to the league means changes are coming. Can we expect league wide changes in protocols for security and media access? Or is it a matter of time before there's another Tim Howard situation? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The long transfer saga of Lionel Messi, el mejor del mundo, has come to an end. Messi made the announcement himself on Mundo Deportivo, he is coming to Inter Miami and Major League Soccer! A historic day for the beautiful game in our country. Messi turned down a reported $1.6 billion, with a 'b', from Saudi Arabia. MLS had to get "creative" with the contract. We dive into the crazy, intricate world of MLS rules. Even our resident historian Mike Kuhn is in over his head with this one. Everything will be bent, stretched, and shoved under the rug to the greatest soccer player the world has ever seen. And to be honest... we're fine with it. Bad Translations from Messi's announcement. The Americans fielded the youngest starting lineup of the 2022 World Cup against Iran and we were able to watch our boys grow up right in front of our eyes. They've been building the foundations for years now. But this is the World Cup. This isn't foundation. This is the real thing. Coming together and going to toe-to-toe with England, beating Iran with everything on the line, and surviving this tough group is what we'll look back on when they win the whole thing on home soil in four years. Tyler Adams has done everything right on and off the field, proving he was the only choice to Captain this squad. Christian Pulisic is day-to-day after scoring the most Christian Pulisic goal you've ever seen. The best moment of his career and he didn't even get to celebrate. Is Gregg Berhalter nailing this? Or did the USMNT advance in spite of him? If Josh Sargent is unable to play on Saturday, there's a big question mark at striker. Haji Wright seemed to be the first choice, but he played so poorly vs Iran I'm not sure he should see the field again. Could we finally see Gio Reyna? Learn more about your ad choices. We hear what their experience has been in Qatar off the field, amid all the controversy. Ginna is there along with other organizers of the 2026 World Cup who are gathering info to prepare for the festivities in Kansas City. The USMNT has defeated England with a resounding 0-0 draw in their second match of the 2022 World Cup. It may not have been worth three points, but it was a strong performance from the United States. They were unlucky to not get the winner with Christian Pulisic hitting the crossbar and Weston McKennie missing a golden opportunity as well. Why has Gio Reyna barley seen the field? Eric Wynalda has claimed Gregg Berhalter lied about the players' fitness and there's now a rift between the two. Haji Wright got the start over Josh Sargent, how does he match up against a stingy Iran defense? While the US should win, this is not going to be an easy three points. Iran is organized, only needs to play for a draw, and goals have been hard to come by for the Americans. Qatar spent billions of dollars for their team to be alive for all of six days in the World Cup, the first team to be eliminated. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Gregg Berhalter's vision came to fruition for the first 45 minutes against Wales. The United States' National Team was dominant. They controlled possession and got the go ahead goal from Tim Weah, but it all changed in the second half. Tyler Adams, sporting the captain's armband, was fantastic. He might have earned himself a big payday already. The ginger out of Missouri Josh Sargent got the start at striker. However, the attack for the Americans almost exclusively came down the wings. Sargent was rather quiet on the day after hitting the post early in the first half. Where was Gio Reyna? The Borussia Dortmand attacker says he's "100 percent" healthy and ready to play. Weston McKennie and Tim Ream were among four yellow cards for the Yanks and it may affect Friday's lineup. McKennie is a necessity against Iran, does he sit on the bench against the Three Lions? Segment 1: Expansion Draft & Isimat-Mirin Rumor Segment 2: (20:57) Corrupt FIFA & World Cup Roster When looking at this upcoming World Cup abstractly, the possibilities seemed endless. The talent pool is massive, young, and hungry. But now that Gregg Berhalter has announced the 26-man USMNT World Cup Roster, it’s a reality check. This is it. These are the guys who are tasked with leading us into the desert to find glory. Speaking of the desert, this is your regularly schedule reminder: FIFA is corrupt, Qatar shouldn’t be hosting, and the world should dissent against all of this. FIFA is so blatant about their corruption, it seems there is no stopping it. All we can do is find our own ways to push back individually. Any time the World Cup is discussed here at The Blue Testament, you will be thoroughly reminded of the ugly side of our sport. Anyway, there’s no point in complaining about the roster decisions (though we do plenty of that). Jordan Pefok is a notable absence, but Ricardo Pepi’s omission is particularly interesting after convincing him to choose US over Mexico. Is he the future of the striker position for the US? St. Louis City SC Expansion Draft is done and no Sporting KC players were taken. But they did get a player with KC roots. Our show is split between STL and KC natives, but this new team is already annoying everyone. There’s an article from 90Min about Nicolas Isimat-Mirin and interest from ‘leading’ MLS clubs. But we’re suspicious for several reasons. If there’s any truth to the article, it would indicate SKC is looking to turn down the option for the 30-year-old centerback, but sign him for less money. 2022 has come to an end for Kansas City (outdoor) soccer after the KC Current lost the NWSL final last weekend. We take a look at the roster and what moves should be made this offseason. The MLS Cup is set for Saturday night with the Philadelphia Union representing the Eastern Conference, taking on LAFC from the West. It should be a banner night for MLS.. if only there was parking available. What is going on in Philadelphia right now? They shouldn't be allowed this much success in sports. Sporting KC picked up 29-year-old Serbian Nemanja Radoja. The defensive midfielder fills a position Peter Vermes needs, but he'll be on the other side of 30 when the season begins. Should that be a concern? We're less than a month until the World Cup kicks off. Does the US know who the striker is? Or the keeper? The injury list at the moment feels like it includes the entire roster. The Australians are the first to criticize the host nation and human rights issues. Will the Yanks speak up? Joined by Kevin Lopez of SKC Fan TV. The updated list of 2022 MLS Salaries was released this week and we got our first look at how much money the new players are making for Sporting KC. Willy Agada jumps out as one of the best steals of a salary on the roster. He helped turn the season around and scored goals at a rate on par with the Golden Boot, all for just a quarter of a million bucks. Youngster Kayden Pierre was a surprise bright spot this year. He's proven to be one of the better prospects in the league, but he's is listed at just $70,600 guaranteed compensation. What salaries are you dropping from the roster? Sporting KC is still hot. Unfortunately, they're still eliminated from the post season. But playing spoiler for the Seattle Sounders instantly becomes a highlight of the season. SKC only suffered one loss since July 30th, a heartbreaker in Austin after conceding two very late goals. They would have a very real chance to sneak into the playoffs this weekend against FC Dallas had they held on to all three points that night. That loss clearly stands out as a defining moment this season. What other tough results hurt you the most this season? Peter Vermes seemingly confirmed the departure of Khiry Shelton with his recent comments about getting a third striker. He also mentioned the ability to get another Designated Player. Does this have anything to do with the report on the possibility of a 4th DP spot? The recently released Yates report painted a pretty ugly picture for the NWSL, including sexual misconduct among a slew of other troubling findings. Have teams acted quickly enough in response? The former club, FC Kansas City, is mentioned in the report. The differences between clubs then, and the KC Current now, is astounding. Learn more about your ad choices. Kevin Lopez of @SKCFanTV joins the show. You can find him every matchday and watch the games with him as he live streams. Sporting KC finally figured things out. They're scoring goals and Willy Agada is taking his shirt off every match! SKC has been one of the best teams in MLS since August. But the moment everyone started to get excited, they promptly got eliminated from the playoffs. It's clear that nobody in MLS would have wanted to face this team, had they made it. If Erik Thommy and Agada had arrived two games sooner, SKC very well could be sneaking into the post season. Daniel Salloi has greatly benefited from their arrival. Seeing more confidence and ability around him on the field has perhaps taken some of the pressure off his shoulders. There's been a lot of talk this week about Alan Pulido and his future with the team. Should the team buy out his contract and find another DP? A fight about Argentina and Brazil breaks out. It was another rough and ugly match against the Houston Dynamo as Sporting KC settled for a scoreless draw on the road. In spite of countless opportunities, and two shots off the crossbar, SKC never found the final touch. Six yellow cards were shown, but the antics from the Dynamo called for many more. We expect nothing less from Houston these days. Ben Sweat was the best player for Sporting KC. That is a combination of words I never thought would fall together. The usual suspects like Daniel Salloi, Erik Thommy, and Johnny Russell had their moments, but Sporting failed to continue the momentum they had built over the last month. Nate Bukaty and Jacob Peterson join Cody & Thad to talk about the hot streak for Sporting KC. The team is fun to watch again, emotions are running high, and it's hard to not imagine the dream scenario of sneaking into the playoffs. Jake tells us if we should start to believe or not. Scoring in a media game immediately becomes far less cool when a professional athlete enters the room. But will that stop Nate and Cody from talking about it? Jake gives us some great insight in to Sporting KC's scouting process and what he saw and expected from newcomers Erik Thommy and William Agada. They've already surprised this year, and everyone is even more excited for the years to come. The narrative for this season has begun to change. Will it be the worst season in club history, a black mark on Peter Vermes record? Or might this turn into a season of redemption? A year in which we can be proud of our team and the issues they overcame to bring us exciting soccer at the end of the season? Jesse Marsch and his Leed's United States squad with Aaronson & Adams have become must-watch tv every weekend. After witnessing a phenomenal, acrobatic, double save right in front of them, the Cauldron began chanting "That's Our Keeper!" 21-year-old John Pulskamp has been in goal far more than he expected this season, so he says hearing that level of support from the fans "is hard to describe exactly." Tim Melia has been out with a hamstring injury, and his contract is up this year. Pulskamp, however, signed an extension earlier this year through 2025 with an option for 2026. Therefore, Peter Vermes and Co. are getting a nice long look at the potential heir to the throne. The Cauldron let their feelings be known as Pulskamp shut down any hope the Portland Timbers had of making a comeback. The task at hand for the young is not lost on him. The competition is fierce, and only getting more challenging. Pulskamp explains the importance of looking inward and always working to find that next level. "There's a lot of guys on the roster. There's a lot of guys in the league," he says. "Those guys are constantly getting better, they're making themselves better." He's a California kid and thought he had an idea about what Kansas City might be like, but he's since grown to love it. And brings his family & friends in town to enjoy it as well. From the LA Galaxy academy, to trials overseas, he shares with us his path to landing at Sporting. Pulskamp reveals the best cities in US Soccer for getting heckled. He misses the feisty fans of the USL. We also learned why Tim Melia started calling him The Big Bear. It's hard to avoid with paws like that. Learn more about your ad choices. Friday night was a beautiful night at CMP as the KC Current drew Angel City 1-1 in front of a record breaking crowd, extending their unbeaten run to 11 matches. Cody scored in the media game and won't let anyone forget about it. Victoria Pickett was traded away in a blockbuster deal. How much value did the Current receive? Willy Agada and John Pulskamp were the heroes as Sporting KC beat down the Portland Timbers to climb out of the cellar. Agada is in the zone. Erik Thommy has been a revelation. Is that the MLS (double) save of the season from Pulskamp? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Friday night is a big night for the KC Current as Angel City FC come knocking. The house should be packed with a record-breaking crowd as they look to continue a ten-game unbeaten run. The rosters all set for the Media Game at halftime Friday night, and Cody is in very real danger from the studs of the Blue Testament staff. Sporting KC lost a heartbreaker at Austin FC after blowing a fantastic first half performance, and 3-1 lead. How can a team look so strong in one half, and so terrible in the next? William Agada is off to a hot start with three goals four appearances. This includes one of the best goal celebrations in club history. However, the goals he’s scored aren’t exactly bangers. Quite the opposite. And he’s had chances to score even more. The faking of injuries is objectively one of the ugliest parts of our sport and should always be called out. Agada is new to the league and has some growing to do, but some of his antics thus far are not what we want to see SKC players take part in. Jonathan Pulskamp has been thrust into full time duty and the team is getting a long look at the potential heir to the Melia throne. But we have our questions about him being ‘the guy’. What do you think, is Pulskamp the future? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
We could feel it right as we walked through the front entrance of the brand new $18 million training complex. There's an excitement around the Kansas City Current right now which cannot be ignored. Perhaps the fresh paint and new car smell have something to do with it, but this building has a vibe. Club President Allison Howard has been in KC for three months now, since her move from the Los Angeles Lakers where she served as VP of Corporate Partnerships for the last five years. Her decade long experience with one of the most famous sports franchises on the planet, is very clear after talking with her for just a short time. She's among a front office filled with wildly impressive people who are all incredibly passionate about the work they're doing. Sitting in a gorgeous conference room overlooking three fields, Howard quickly confirmed that palpable atmosphere we sensed. "The workout room is directly below us... and the music is blaring! So you can really feel the liveliness." This complex provides this club the opportunity to have the front office staff and the players working closely together. Something unique to most women's clubs throughout the world. "It's nice for everybody when they're under one roof to really feel a part of, and get the vibe and the energy of working with professional athletes," she explained. "Because it's extremely motivating." That feeling has poured over onto the field as the Current are in the midst of a ten game unbeaten run in the NWSL. The club is working hard to set a new attendance record for a women's soccer match in Kansas City on Friday night as Angel City FC come to town. The media game will take place at halftime, which will surely bring extra eyes to the event. Tuesday, August 16th is 816 Day in Kansas City. The team have opened up a special chance for fans to secure their spot in the new stadium, set to open in 2024. You can make a deposit and read the full statement at KCCurrentStadium.com. Cody & Thad among the first civilians let inside the new training complex for the Kansas City Current in Riverside, MO. We’re coming at you from an absolute magnificent conference room overlooking the training ground, joined by Executive Director of Communications, and our long-time friend, Dani Welniak. Dani made the jump from player (with a giant Super Bowl ring by the way), to the media side, and now to the front office. The girl can do it all. She shares the differences and challenges of the new gig. As well as all the excitement that comes with being a part of this club. There truly is a vibe, a palpable atmosphere, on these grounds. And it’s not just the new car smell of the building! These people are ambitious, they’re driven. The KC Current and this staff are working everyday to build something great for not just Kansas City, but the NWSL and women’s soccer as a whole. It’s a big week for them as the look to set an attendance record on Friday with Angel City FC coming to town. Daniel Sperry of the KC Star is also on hand as we prepare for the Media Game Draft. The Media Game was a success. In that Thad survived. Cody missed the email. But the worse things get for Sporting KC.. the more we have to talk about. We though the low point of the season had come months ago. The team seemed to be playing better than the beginning of the season. But here we are again. A new low point. We second guess Peter Vermes' lineup choice for the Open Cup Semifinal in Sacramento, as well as his choices for PK takers. How does Graham Zusi go 5th? Felipe Hernandez is developing a bit of a reputation. Did yelling at the keeper inspire him to make the winning save? Youthful mistakes were a trend the next game against Austin FC as Cam Duke was sent off with an embarrassing second yellow card and Jonathan Pulskamp let in an inexcusable goal between his legs. Will we find anything to cheer about the rest of the season? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Even the most optimistic Sporting KC fans are having a hard time seeing a path to the MLS Cup Playoffs these days. But Lamar Hunt is giving Kansas City another chance at glory. Wednesday night's match against the Sacramento Republic FC is the biggest match of the season. The best attempts at ignoring the loss to LAFC went ignored. There was too much to talk about from Erik Thommy & William Agada making their debuts, to Khiry Shelton's worst performance ever. Everyone in the stadium can see he has zero confidence. What is your starting lineup for the US Open Cup Semifinal? Who starts at striker? Is it really possible Khiry starts up top again? The club's worst season in over a decade has brought out an ugly side to the fanbase. But is it different than other teams and other sports? Brian Bliss is technically the Sporting KC Technical Director. How does that differ from Peter Vermes' role and should more blame be directed towards Bliss for this season's failure? An injury to Graham Zusi provided youngster Kayden Pierre with a massive opportunity. He joined the Sporting KC academy in 2018 and seen plenty of time with SKCII since, but a lot has changed in the last month or so for the 19-year-old. Pierre has actually been a bright spot at times while his team struggles in last place. He has plenty of growing left to do, but he's ready for the challenge and playing with a ton of confidence. Kayden was laid back and smiling through our whole conversation. We talked about video games. Reminiscing about old classics, and playing FIFA with his teammates today. He tells about the difference in talent level from USL to Major League Soccer. Pierre isn't intimidated by the jump to the top flight. It might be nervy at first with larger crowds, but then he settles into the match. "It's not too crazy. I can do this. My confidence just kicked in." The first assist is in the bag. What's next? On Saturday July, 23, 2022, Ilie Sanchez will make his return to Children’s Mercy Park. Ilie spent five years in Kansas City becoming a fan favorite with his incredible passing range and his sincere kindness off the pitch. So in preparation for his return, he went to training. He watched some film. He did some stretching. And he sat down to chat with the Shades of Blue. In an interview that was only supposed to last for 10-15 minutes, we chatted for almost 30. Tears may or may not have been shed. We talked about everything with Ilie. How the move to LAFC materialized; what his time in KC was like; and which LAFC players might be flying under the radar but need to be noticed. We then played a rapid fire question and answer game where I ended up losing a bet to Robert. Ilie continued to show the same grace and high character that made him such a fan favorite and has me petitioning for the club to install some Ilie Sanchez stained glass in the Member’s Club. Take a listen and give him a standing ovation when he returns home this weekend! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
It was an ugly, punch-in-the-gut 3-0 loss at the RioT against Real Salt Lake. But Sporting KC got 4 points from a tough three-game road trip. Until Roger Espinoza's red card, they didn't look like a Wooden Spoon team either. We've obviously lowered the bar in the middle of this terrible season but we can help you find some of the positive. And Reddit hates us for that. Good. The backline, specifically the centerbacks, are a main target of fan frustrations. What do they do that's good? What do they do that's bad? Should ANY of them return next season? Uri Rosell's struggles continue. Marinos Tzionis didn't exactly set the stage on fire with starting opportunity. Robert defends Nicholas Isimat-Mirin... by blaming everyone else. 19-year-old Kayden Pierre has started several matches in a row and been impressing at right back. The KC Current have put together a nice unbeaten run, but they hate that term. And we also talk about the US Women's National Team winning the Concacaf Women's Championship. "Sporting KC looks pretty good," you may find yourself saying watching a match. And you're right. Until they don't. This team gives themselves a chance in what feels like every single match. They're right there. The defense is organized. The offense is creating chances. And in the blink of an eye, an absolute breakdown leads to the easiest goal you've ever seen. Or a clearance bounces off the keeper's back into the net. Peter Vermes made changes to his lineup against Minnesota United FC amidst a busy schedule, but SKC looked as dangerous and creative for stretches in this match as they have the entire season. But the soccer gods simply wouldn't allow Sporting to get two straight road wins. Mike Kuhn joins the show and we couldn't avoid talking about keepers. Did Dayne St. Clair "stand on his head"? Or did he just make two decent saves? Jonathan Pulskamp, however, deserves a ton a of credit for the result after he made a couple great saves. Do keepers get too much credit? Cody doubles down. At the very least, Sporting KC certainly hasn't looked like a team that will win the Wooden Spoon as of late. We examine the remaining schedule and the likelihood of Sporting KC sneaking into the playoffs. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Just when it felt like Sporting KC was on the brink of turning things around this season, we got a reminder from the Seattle Sounders just how much the team is lacking at the moment. Losing to Seattle is never fun, but a 3-0 shutout is painful. We recorded the show just after the final whistle on Saturday from our very first Watch Party at Strange Days Brewing. Thank you to everyone who came to hangout and watch the game with us. It was a really fun day all around, in spite of the ugly result. SKC has reinforcements coming in the attack, but this match seemed to prove plenty of problems at the back as well. Kortne Ford was a noticeable absence and it appears his presence is needed. But who else is the problem? Nicolas Isimat-Mirin or Andreu Fontas? We talk about the new signings which will be arriving when the transfer window opens. Last week was a great week for the sport in Kansas City, including the opening of the KC Current training center and the city being selected to host the World Cup in 2026. We're focusing this show on the one thing going well for Sporting KC so far this year. This team has tons of history with the US Open Cup, and in spite of terrible MLS play this season, somehow SKC is just three wins from another trophy. The Union Omaha Soccer Club, playing in USL League One - the third tier of American soccer - have beaten two MLS clubs to reach this point. But the club has done very well with fan engagement and carving out a place in their community. The Who Gives A Hoot podcast is dedicated to the club and USL news so we invited them to come on the show with us. Luke Opperman joined to give us some insight into this little team from Nebraska and how they've made it this far. Omaha fans are very likely also Sporting KC supporters as well, and Luke tells us that makes this matchup even more fun. But that also means the fans have been watching SKC and know just how bad things are looking for Peter Vermes' side. The fans & the players are sure to come into this one with tons of confidence. The last word from the team is that they're expecting over 700 away fans to make the trip to Kansas City. Might we have the beginnings of another 'friendliest rivalry in sports'? The trading of memorabilia has already begun! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
It's time for Cody to face the music after a mistake last time the BELGIAN joined the show. Although he finds somewhere else to pass the blame. The 22-year-old defender has settled into life at Sporting KC, becoming a fan favorite in the process. Not just because of his calves, either. Logan is thriving in the physicality of Major League Soccer. Nobody gets fouled like Logan Ndenbe. Nobody! But the youngster welcomes to the tough challenges, as he enjoys dishing them out himself. Ndenbe tells us about the process that brought him to the team, and if other MLS clubs were interested. He vividly remembers his first call with Peter Vermes, a common theme among his teammates. Having spent time in Belgium's youth ranks, most recently with the U-21's, Logan has his eyes on the EURO's next year. But he's also quick to remind us of his eligibility for Cameroon as well. In honor of the current state of Sporting KC, we recorded this show at Strange Days! So this episode is done, in its truest form, with beers in our hands. "My Football Team's Got Me Drinking" The Blue Testament is hosting a Watch Party on June 25th at Strange Days Brewing and all of you are invited! After the match against the Seattle Sounders, we'll record a live postgame show and let some of you give your hot takes on air! SKC lost yet again, this time at the hands of the New England Revolution. It was a rag tag lineup filled with replacements and hopeful experiments, albeit out of necessity. Peter Vermes is still dealing with a multitude of injuries and international duty. But we are fed up with the performances from this team. Graham Zusi returned from injury and made one play that has the guys AMPED up. Uri Rosell is not good enough. And he plays a dangerous game with his jersey roll-ups. We remember (again) how bad Jose Mauri screwed things up for SKC. Cody declares this the focus of all his rage this season. Are reinforcements on the way? Taylor Twellman teased two new forward signings that will arrive in July when the transfer window opens. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
After yet another disappointing result, Sporting KC find themselves in the loneliest of places - the bottom of the table. Thankfully, we all have Johnny Russell to remind us why we love this sport. The captain put in some 'legendary' performances over an incredibly challenging time for the club. It's obvious to anyone watching that he puts his entire body and mind into every match. Everyone is frustrated at the results, rightfully so! But Russell is making sure there's no question about the level of dedication and passion they have right now. The boys can finally catch their breath this week. They played seven matches over 21 days and Peter Vermes is giving them much needed time off. Being in last place, it's hard to say they survived that rough stretch. But at least JFR made it out alive. The break will also give several players the chance to get off the injury report. Signed as a Homegrown Player in 2019, Cam Duke is right where he wants to be. Wearing the Sporting KC shirt and representing his city every week. This team has seen a barrage of injuries requiring Duke to be deployed on all three lines of the field already in 2022. That versatility makes him incredibly valuable to Peter Vermes in trying to piece together a Starting XI through injuries, suspensions, & international duty. Additionally, the youngster to gain more confidence & composure every time he takes the field. Cam comes from strong KC soccer roots. His older brother Christian is a former Sporting KC and Swope Park Rangers player, and their father Chris played with the Kansas City Comets as well as the Attack. Jumping into big brother's practices put Cam's game on another level from a very young age. There were some Questions from Kids that Duke enjoyed. He even divulged hidden gems like his favorite color. All the young guys on this close-knit team spend a lot of time together off the field. It isn't just a show for the media when Sporting KC talks about team camaraderie. When asked about veterans that stand out as leaders in the locker room, Cam ends up mentioning basically everyone. On top of all the demands of being a professional athlete, Duke is also working on a business degree. If he isn't on the field - or playing video games with Johnny Russell - he's doing school work. It's all very impressive. But the 21-year-old is still very laid back. He's down-to-earth, too cool to be impressed by himself. His Homegrown contract runs through this season with an option for 2023. At the rate he's going this year, it'll be an easy choice for the club. Also Cam tells us what the difference is between a taco and a burrito. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
It turns out, all they had to do was listen to the show! Peter Vermes has deployed a different style and formation in the last two matches for Sporting KC, albeit out of necessity due to injuries & suspensions. But the change has yielded two straight results in league play. One worrying note is a potential trend developing in which the defense concedes an ugly goal early in the second half. Robert Voloder took some blame on this one, but he might have been the only one actually defending. A look at the current MLS Western Conference table is quite jarring when compared to last year's playoffs. Sporting KC is not the only team struggling. Seattle, Portland, Colorado, & Vancouver are all at the bottom of the table at the moment. All of a sudden the young guys on the roster are starting to impress. Homegrowns Cam Duke & Felipe Hernandez are looking solid, while all three international U-22's are key contributors as well. "God bless Ben Sweat." But it's really important how you say it. It's been quite the journey to the Sporting KC starting XI for Olathe, KS native Kortne Ford. He's faced a lot which has made him stronger, and perhaps wise beyond his years. So naturally, we start off talking about his socks. There's a really good reason he cuts holes in them, by the way. Apologies to those with Trypophobia (Cody calls it Thalassophobia). Kortne lost his mother to cancer, and she has been a massive inspiration to him. As well as so many others. Thad can empathize with him to a certain extent. Although he didn't go through it publicly in front of the media. It's been a different experience for him, but Ford explains how it has given him the chance to tell her incredible story. On the field, you may notice the 26-year-old is fearless when it comes to blocking shots. He takes pride in this part of his game as it was embedded in him back in college at the University of Denver. That dedication and drive make Ford an obvious choice for Peter Vermes. Kortne vividly remembers his initial, very short, conversation over the phone with Vermes. "I was very honest. I definitely didn't hold my tongue. I was so passionate about it that I was shaking." A couple weeks ago Johnny Russell let it slip that Kortne, another guy who likes fast cars, had been rear-ended recently. He gives us an update on the Nissan 370z and it's recovery. In addition to cars, Ford tells us what he does for fun. He advises us to avoid Russell when it comes to Call of Duty. But it's not all fun and games. Kortne is very businesslike. He's got exciting side hustles and major plans for when his playing days are done. And we're pretty sure nothing is going to stop him. Learn more about your ad choices. After a historically bad 7-2 loss at the hands of the Portland Timbers, we've hit a new low for Sporting KC. It's quite an unfamiliar place for this organization since the rebrand. So.. where do we go from here? We might still be searching for rock bottom. OR.. they could figure things out and still make a run at the playoffs. The arguments can be had about who should be playing, of course. Tzionis should be getting more time, Khiry less. But that won't save the team this year. What can the club do to show they still care? Sign a midfielder? Change the formation & style of play to fit our current talent? For years SKC fans have heard the mantra, "Play the kids." Well the kids played. Are they not as good as we hoped? Several goals can be chalked up to youthful mistakes, but that youth is going to be forced on the field a lot this season. So the problem isn't going away. Peter Vermes is getting the lion's share of fan frustration. Is it possible he gets fired this year? How many losses would it actually take? His job of building the roster this year as Technical Director failed. There's no denying that with the power of hindsight after injuries to the two best players. Is this cause to fire him? Could we see Vermes step away from either TD or Manager? This show is not close to wanting Vermes Out. But we discuss alternatives. Is there really anyone out there better suited to lead SKC? Yes, there have been a lot of questions asked. That's because we're confused. We're not used to this. Our football team has us drinking! It's Shades of Blue AFTER DARK! We recorded in the wee hours of the morning, fresh off a thrilling 4-2 extra time win for Sporting KC over FC Dallas in the US Open Cup. And to think... you almost forgot how much fun it is to watch SKC! The Starting XI turned some heads and one player's name was literally hand-written on the official scoresheet. Several youngsters were given their shot to make an impact. Who did? Kayden Pierre had a big opportunity to slide into the regular first team lineup. Jake Davis wasted zero time in proving he's a young Roger Espinoza by immediately getting a yellow card. Peter Vermes admitted the miserable 2-0 deficit at the half was his fault. Even though Ben Sweat straight up forgot he was playing soccer at one point. But whatever he did at halftime - it worked. This game had everything. Including a Khiry Shelton brace (kind of). Power Rankings for the best calves on the team. The two newcomers scored their first goals for Sporting. Vujnovic redeemed an otherwise quiet performance with the first goal. While Tzionis was a bright spot all night before he took the roof off the house with a 98th minute equalizer, the latest regulation time goal in club history. His nickname isn't "JFR" for no reason, it's earned. The Sporting KC captain is passionate & fiery. He knows his teammates, coaches, and the fans, all expect this from him. We sat down with Johnny Russell this week to talk about that passion, a frustrating season, and of course... cars. The 32-year-old Scotsman had just got off the treatment table after getting some work done for an "ongoing hamstring problem". But that kind of work is common and he says it's nothing that's holding him back right now. I'd make sure to get the most out of the incredible facilities at Pinnacle as I could, as well. We asked Johnny if he feels like SKC is headed in the right direction after showing signs of life in the 2-2 draw with FC Dallas. "We haven't reached the standards we set last year," he says. "We know that ourselves." Russell is well aware he just hit #5 on Sporting KC's all-time scoring leader charts. He even says he's set "targets" for himself, the first of which was his friend Mo Johnston. Johnny plans to keep climbing the ranks in KC with an eye on Preki at the top. With Alan Pulido out, he's taken over penalty kick duties. He gives us some cool insight into reading keepers and his PK tactics. A few weeks ago after a match, Russell went into the stands and confronted a fan. But after scoring last week, he celebrated in that very spot and once again made peace after the match. "JFR" says he heard some things he didn't like that were directed at his teammates. Things that went beyond criticism, which he says they deserved that night. "I didn't like it. I lost my cool in that moment." We also reminisce about other times he fiercely defended his teammates. Remember the Vancouver Whitecaps getting double red cards? Without Gadi Kinda and a #10, Peter Vermes says the front line has slowly been learning to adapt to a different look in the midfield. Johnny tells how he and Daniel Salloi are working to find space in the final third and create chances. Finally, we get to one of Johnny Russell's favorite things about the US. American muscle cars. He tells us which teammates drive cool cars and that one of them just got rear-ended. And what is JFR's dream car? Just call him 'Russell... Johnny Russell'. Learn more about your ad choices. Sporting KC earned a 2-2 draw against the always tough FC Dallas over the weekend after goals from Johnny Russell & Daniel Salloi. Are things starting to trend in the right direction for SKC? With the recent news of Gadi Kinda's season ending surgery and the closing of the transfer window, Peter Vermes will have to make due with his current roster. However, this last match gave us signs of hope. Cody & Thad recently spoke with Salloi about his expertise in getting fouled, compared to his teammate Khiry Shelton. This skill paid off with Daniel earning a questionable penalty kick which led to the opening goal vs Dallas. Pen or no pen.. what say you? Nikola Vujnovic hasn't featured in the last two matches, and he's only seen the pitch for a few minutes in his last several appearances. He's a different player than Shelton, and Peter Vermes doesn't like to disrupt the flow of a match. Or is he perhaps in the dog house? Kortne Ford turned in another solid performance. We analyze the entire backline, including Cam Duke who replaced Graham Zusi in the first half. Johnny Russell makes peace with the Fountain City Ultras. Learn more about your ad choices. At just 20-years-old, Robert Voloder has already had an interesting journey to MLS. Up to this point, not much was known about him and he was a bit mysterious to us. Even Sporting KC staff told us they were eager to learn more about him from this interview! He's a rather serious guy and is clearly wise beyond his years. But Cody & Thad get the SKC centerback to open up and have fun talking about the temptation of American food and the biggest crowds he's every played in front of.. by far. "Robbie", as his teammates call him, has appeared for both the Bosnia & Herzegovina and Germany youth national teams. We ask him just how closely he remains in contact with the German ranks. Might he get another opportunity soon? Voloder's English is very strong, but we learn that the youngster speaks several languages as well. The young German says he's beefed up since arriving, as is required for the physicality of MLS. He's blown away by the facilities & amenities with SKC. "Disciplined" is a great word to describe Voloder. He loves BBQ and the food here, but avoids temptation. He is always calm, even when subbing on as an emergency replacement in the 5th minute. He keeps it simple. "Just do your thing. Don't think about much. Prove to them what you can do." We loved talking to Robbie and think Sporting KC fans will enjoy getting to know him. Sporting KC has fallen to 12th place in the West, and 26th overall, after another disappointing result against the Columbus Crew. Which line are we upset with this week? Khiry Shelton got the start again and played the full 90 minutes, With Nikola Vujnovic waiting behind him, how long his Khiry's leash? Daniel Salloi has gone cold again. The show wants to see more Marinos Tzionis, but disagrees on where he can be used best. Peter Vermes made changes on the backline and he was rewarded with a shutout by centerbacks Kortne Ford & Robert Voloder. Will we see the same four against FC Dallas? The show takes turn picking a change to lineup to deploy this weekend. Notable friend of the pod Jacob Peterson is also an admirer of Logan Ndenbe. And his calves. Learn more about your ad choices. The US Open Cup matchups have been announced and Sporting KC will face off with FC Dallas on May 10th at in Kansas City. Our MIKE STAT of the week is.. unsurprisingly.. a negative one. If SKC doesn't show some offensive firepower this weekend against the Columbus Crew, a very unfortunate scoring record will be set. Is one goal enough for a soccer team to expect to win each week? Head coach Peter Vermes was a bit more outspoken this week about his team and he's been taking a bunch of heat from a very frustrated fan base. But we aren't doing a Fire Vermes show. It's not happening. That being said, his statements indicate he's frustrated as well. Simply put... these are some dark days for SKC Nation. Thankfully, Robert leaves us with some optimism. After a rough beginning to his time with Sporting KC, Andreu Fontas has cemented himself as the anchor of the back line and even had MLS stats nerds listing him among MLS MVP candidates last year. But now that Fontas overcame injuries and found a new level to his game, SKC have fallen apart. We ask him about playing with a rotating cast of midfielders in front of him, as well as being reunited with Ilie Sanchez, the previous man occupying the #6, last weekend. The centerback is desperate to turn things around and says the team must be "mentally strong ... when things aren't going well." Fontas' boyhood club, FC Barcelona, have gone through a rough patch themselves. But he says this helped him rediscover his love for the club. Unsurprisingly he loves the idea for the Catalan Cafe and shared some native cuisine ideas for us. 32-year-old has fallen in love with KC, like so many before him. We talk about family life and the strange language dynamic for his trilingual daughters. Andreu appears to be peaking in his career, but has Kansas City become Home for when his playing days eventually come to an end? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
He's a 35-year-old with a mountain of experience, but playing in the holding midfield role is still pretty new to Roger Espinoza. He wasn't caught off guard by having to play the 6 recently, because if you aren't versatile and ready for anything, you likely won't be on Peter Vermes' field anyway. He says he wished he had done better, but now he can use that "ammunition" to help turn things around for Sporting KC. Roger is a clear leader in the clubhouse, often mentoring and being tough on younger players. What would he say to his younger self with the long hair and full Roger-face? He recently married Lo'eau LaBonta of the Kansas City Current. She was once told by a coach to watch SKC and emulate a certain Honduran player. We talk about their competitive life at home and how they find the right balance away from soccer. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
After the loss to Nashville, Johnny Russell was seen entering the stands and confronting a fan and we're totally cool with it. It's only been seven games in which Sporting KC lost two star players among a myriad of injuries and absences. Do fans really "deserve better" than this? This show cannot remember a time when SKC were any good at set pieces. They can't score off them, nor can they prevent others from scoring. Why? How? Daniel Sperry of the KC Star helps us figure out the problem. Can this team make the playoffs without brining in reinforcements? All they need to do is just LA Galaxy their way into 7th place. Peter Vermes isn't a fan of a major signing mid-season, but will he be forced to make a move this year? We start off negative, but convince ourselves there's enough talent on the roster to turn things around. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
His dog might look like a super villain, but Daniel Salloi assures us he is in no immediate danger. Which is good, because right now Sporting KC needs all the firepower on the front line it can possibly get. DS20 loves Kansas City and the fans love him right back. But the homegrown Hungarian's contract is up at the end of this season. Will he re-sign with SKC? Will a European club pluck him away from us? Cody & Thad test his preparedness for a line of questioning he's sure to get all season. We talked about the current state of the team and what he believes are the problems holding them back. We ask him about Khiry Shelton's social media post calling out MLS referees and the quality of refereeing league wide. Daniel also helps us to understand the nuances in the art of getting fouled. Sitting in 11th place in the Western Conference, Sporting KC have had a rough start to the season. Injuries, key international absences, and new players still getting acclimated to MLS have plagued this team so far. But this is Sports Talk. We're here to assign blame and point fingers. We try to decide the one glaring issue holding them back. Is it Peter Vermes' roster construction? Is it a lack of talent in the midfield compared to the rest of the league? What about the attacking core? The show is torn on Ben Sweat, but ready for Logan Ndenbe to return. Felipe Hernandez hasn't quite taken the next step this team was needing. But where is his ceiling? Gadi Kinda will return at some point, but will he solve all the issues? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
After a big soccer weekend, especially for the US Men's National Team, we called in Nate Bukaty to help us cover all the action. As a staunch Kansas Citian and the Sporting KC TV Commentator, Nate has a passionate, unique point of view. He says we're in the midst of "the most important 5-year window in the history of American soccer". Not only does this team have a much higher level of talent than generations' past, but they've also regained the "attitude" which historically defined them. It's a dangerous combination. Nate goes Freudian on the toxicity within the US Soccer community online. Cody wants to fight them on Twitter (@thatcodytho). SKC got the win over Real Salt Lake after the Curious Case of Khiry Shelton made an appearance. How does this keep working with a striker who is indifferent about scoring? Now that Nate is on TBT airwaves, free of the shackles of his Sporting KC bosses, what goods can we get him to spill? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Was the match in Chicago terrible.. or just bad? The midfield is starting to become a real worry. Roger Espinoza wasn't supposed to be playing this much. Remi Walter is inconsistent. Will Cam Duke & Felipe Hernandez take that next step? Nikola Vujnovic hasn't had much of an impact on the attack in his first two games.. Do you miss Khiry Shelton yet? We give an update on the injury status for several players as Sporting KC prepares to face Real Salt Lake this weekend. Who, by the way, are somehow at the top of the Western Conference. There's a lot of frustration among Sporting KC faithful after the first three matches, so we start off with the fun stuff. Like making fun of NYCFC's MLS Cup banner. And hairy-armed referees. But as always, we get to the serious stuff. For instance, is "Johnny & Tzionis" and alliteration? Marinos Tzionis looks eager and dangerous. But what does he need to work on? Newcomer Nikola Vujnovic made his debut just four days after arriving, or did he? His teammates couldn't seem to find him out there. But hey, at least we know how to say his name now! Is the problem in the back just a few bad isolated moments, or is there a systemic issue? We try to decide which line is worse off, and it might actually be the midfield. The loss to the Colorado Rapids is one of those matches to forget it ever happened. What's up next? The Chicago Fire who have yet to concede a goal. Cool. Learn more about your ad choices. To clarify... both the team AND this show are a tad askew. The Sporting KC attack isn't exactly firing on all cylinders. Khiry Shelton disappeared at times, but we still don't hate him with the fiery passion that some of you do. Remember, there's still a striker on the way, and 20-year-old Marinos Tzionis has looked formidable in two brief appearances. With two starters sidelined at the moment, the midfield has been a bit scrambled as well. Is Felipe Hernandez ready to take the next step in his MLS career? Remi Walter scored after doing an interview on Shades of Blue. This week's stat from Mike Kuhn is quite depressing in regards to SKC and their recent trips to play the Colorado Rapids. David has words for Diego Rubio. If Thad were a tree, he would live in a forest. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
We recorded this interview from Media Day and were sharing two microphones, so apologies for audio issues. Sporting KC left back Logan Ndenbe just made his MLS debut and was a clear bright spot for the team. He says he's feeling good about the transition to a new league and seems to be wise beyond his 22 years. Logan joined us along side his friend, and fellow French speaker (Cody calls them both Frenchmen by mistake), Remi Walter. The midfielder is in his second season with Sporting and will now have to step up in a big way. With Uri Rosell's injury & the departure of Jose Mauri, Remi is going to be busy. The two of them are very focused on the field, but understand the importance of unwinding and enjoying things outside of soccer. Like video games. As a Frenchman who enjoys fine dining, Remi tells us some of us favorite places to eat around KC. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Sporting KC held Media Day on Wednesday and they gave us all whiskey and pretzels. We brag about all the inside knowledge picked up at the open-to-the-public session. Is Graham Zusi allowed an "old man day" from training? Felipe Hernandez has most of the show excited and ready for a breakout season. After finally decided on what to actually call Oriol "Uri" Rosell, we try to figure out what three players will start in the midfield for the home opener vs the Houston Dynamo. If Paulo Nagamura's first match at the helm is any indication, Houston won't exactly be trying to play "jogo bonito" this weekend. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Hopefully this show can walk some of you off the ledge after that rough start. Everyone offers their best, and worst, moments in the match. Logan Ndenbe was a clear positive from many disappointing performances. The return of Rosell was rubbish. Dom Dwyer scored... because of course he did. But don't let that fool you. Three straight losses to close out the season. Colorado Rapids took first place. What the heck happened? We speculate wildly! We were treated to an epic Peter Vermes rant after the match, and every ounce of his frustration is deserved. But it's not all self loathing! Chad is always a great guest as a KC native that's been with the team for over a decade now. We could - and did - talk with him for hours. Make sure to check out the 'extra time' from our talk. The Sporting KC players are back together this week for unofficial preseason and we got to hear from them for the first time this year. Peter Vermes doesn't sound overly optimistic that a we'll see a new signing on the front line before the regular season begins. But Gianluca Busio sounds ready to step up and THAT dude for SKC. We also talk about all the new kits being released around Major League Soccer. Why are they all so plain? Is Sporting KC waiting to be the grand finale? We'll have the club's designer on the show next week to talk about his team's newest creation. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
While Peter Vermes & Co. have brought in new players in the midfield and the defense, the departures of Felipe Gutierrez, Gerso Fernandes, & Erik Hurtado mean Sporting Kansas City has a lot of questions on the front line beyond the three starters. He's one of those guys you love if he's on your team, but you hate him if he's not. Peter Vermes once said he had the biggest mouth in the league so we were very excited to have him join the show. The one and only Benny Feilhaber joined Cody, Thad, and Robert this week! We cover a range of topics from Tom Brady vs Patrick Mahomes as Super Bowl LV approaches, the angriest he's ever seen Peter Vermes, all the way to more serious topics like the Major League Soccer CBA debate & potential lockout. If you have somehow been missing out, make sure you subscribe to Benny's pod with Sal Zizzo & Ike Opara, BSI The Podcast. Follow Cody @ThatCodyTho, Thad @TheBackpost, & Robert @SpKCLife. We kick off Season Four of the Shades of Blue Soccer Show with pressing topics like how to pronounce the word wash. Is there an 'r' in there somewhere? Is our nation's capitol in 'Warshington D.C'? Thad is always full of surprises. It's a time for new beginnings in this world! Sporting Kansas City signed three new Homegrown Players and picked up two more in the MLS (not so) SuperDraft. But head coach Peter Vermes recently held a press conference and the updates weren't quite as optimistic as fans would have hoped at this point in the offseason. Are Gerso Fernandes & Erik Hurtado gone? Will a deal get done with Felipe Gutierrez? PV just simply didn't inspire the same confidence we are used to hearing. Is he growing frustrated with his search to add players to the roster? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Shades of Blue is back for the first offseason podcast and there is already plenty to talk about. A complete season wrap-up is coming soon, but first we talk rumors and renegotiations that are on the minds of Sporting Kansas City fans. FC Barcelona have joined Bayern Munich, among other clubs, with interest in youngster Gianluca Busio. What league around the world best suits the 18-year-old? How much money is he actually worth? Is it possible he leaves for free like Erik Palmer-Brown? So many questions. Sporting KC declined the option of their #10 Felipe Gutierrez, but he isn't gone just yet. The two sides are renegotiating the contract and we discuss the likelihood the Chilean will return for the 2021 season. Roger Espinoza is also in the same situation, although his contract had expired. This show is pretty confident a deal with get done for Roger, but what would the team look like without these two? In other earth shattering news, the MLS Re-Entry draft took place and Sporting picked up a goalkeeper after declining the options of Eric Dick & Richard Sanchez. Learn more about your ad choices. The ridiculous 2020 season has come to an end for Sporting Kansas City. But the SOB crew is here to help you work through those confusing feelings during this troubling time. There are plenty of positives we can choose to focus on and be hopeful for seasons to come. Women's soccer is returning to KC! A show of their own is coming soon, but we briefly discuss the good news for the local soccer community. The loss to Minnesota United FC became almost painful to watch. So we won't dwell on it, but there are points to discuss. The absence of Alan Pulido is on the minds of most SKC fans, the header from Roberto Puncec may have actually crossed the line but went mostly unchallenged, and Kansas City was undoubtedly missing the veteran experience of Matt Besler and Graham Zusi. Peter Vermes and Co. need to make decisions on 15 players. Most of those decisions have already been made, but we won't hear official word just yet. That is a big number, but many fans would like to see turnover anyway. We look around at some of the options and players out of contract and decide who is on the chopping block. Tough choices must be made. Who do you get rid of? Are you sticking with Daniel Salloi? Is it really time to move on from Matt Besler? Is Gerso worth his large salary? Fresh off of a legendary performance from one Sporting Kansas City keeper, another legendary shot-stopper joined the show this week. Jimmy Nieslen and the regular SOB crew play a new game, talk about the MLS Playoffs, and predict what is to come for SKC! Thad came up with some SKC trivia for everyone in the aptly named Who's That Player?. The White Puma, unsurprisingly, was the winner. By far. It's been such a wild season and it was great to hear about it from Jimmy's perspective has a player and coach. He's got some high praise for the players as well as the coaching staff for grinding through it. Everyone is feeling good about SKC chances this playoff run. The only question is who they'll host December 12th for the MLS Cup. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Cody, Robert, and Thad were back at it again on Wednesday night to talk about Sporting Kansas City finishing on top of the Western Conference in what was the most strange season in league history. Call it "by default" if you want, we're happy about first place. Am I supposed to feel sorry for Seattle Sounders fans? As Thad points out, even if not for points-per-game, SKC would have come out on top. Noted rumor site, MLSSoccer.com, is just now reporting that Gadi Kinda's loan has been made permanent. The Blue Testament reported about this back in August. Is he permanent..... again? Or is MLSSoccer.com just slow? The nominees for the end of the season awards in MLS are out. Peter Vermes is a notable absence from the Coach of the Year list. The 11th place to 1st place turnaround is the biggest in league history, but that isn't enough apparently. 2020 is really kicking into high gear as we close it out. The election & political unrest loom. Alan Pulido is (rumored to be) injured again. And another Sporting Kansas City player has tested positive for COVID-19 just as an already confusing season is coming to a nail baiting close. Cody, Robert, & Thad gather around their computers to try and make sense of everything. We don't, but we try. Just when SKC was starting to look like an MLS Cup contender, Pulido is apparently injured again. Can they stay alive in the playoff race without him? Is Erik Hurtado still the preferred backup? Thad has some conspiracy theories for you on this one. The team announced on Thursday that another first team Sporting KC player has tested positive for COVID-19. What does this mean, exactly? If SKC don't play another game, then they cannot be passed on PPG and would claim the Western Conference as their own. Did someone take one for the team? Major League Soccer has officially made points-per-game the determining factor for the playoffs this season. Peter Vermes wasn't happy in Friday's press conference, but what other option do they have? Things have changed a bit now, especially the playoff math. Cody & Thad look at what it will take for Sporting Kansas City to secure a home playoff game (and a buy) and set themselves up for a run at MLS Cup in this absurd, ridiculous, & unprecedented season. Minnesota United FC is coming to town on Sunday fresh off two straight wins, but SKC have a chance to lock down the spot that'll bring that sweet playoff atmosphere back to Children's Mercy Park. For far too long, matches like Sporting Kansas City's win over the Rapids would have ended differently. They would dominate opponents while the breakthrough goal would either take too long, or never come at all. But then the club spent $10 million on a lethal striker named Alan Pulido. And all of a sudden the team got way better. It's almost like they are TEN MILLION DOLLARS better! We saw goals from four different players in an all-around great performance last night vs the Colorado Rapids. Andreu Fontas came in clutch as a late replacement and not only helped secure the shutout, but got rewarded with a goal of his own. Gerso Fernandes reminded everyone what the #GerShow really is with an absolutely top class goal - and celebration to follow. With the season ending surgery for Graham Zusi, there is really only one option left at right back. Jaylin Lindsey has been somewhat inconsistent this season, but looked very strong last night. If he continues to play like that with the rest of the back line, Sporting will be a contender for MLS Cup. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Daniel Sperry joins Cody & Thad to be very mature and professional about Sporting Kansas City's last two incredibly frustrating matches. Now is not the time to focus on poor referring, bad luck, and Graham Zusi's season ending surgery. Nor how it felt like getting punched in the face. Nor where SKC could be in the Western Conference standings right now. We would never. In stead, we look ahead to the Colorado Rapids match at 7:30pm on Saturday night at Children's Mercy Park. Alan Pulido is back which means someone has to be the odd man out. Can you keep Gianluca Busio out of the lineup? Where does he play? Is Roger Espinoza best used off the bench.. or perhaps as an outside back? Gerso Fernandes has been creating chances like crazy. And don't forget about Khiry Shelton! Who do you sit? Sporting Kansas City got robbed of a goal, and a point, against FC Dallas on Wednesday night. The babying of keepers is a big pet peeve in the sport of soccer and Cody, Robert, & Thad dive into all the other annoyances in soccer. What bothers you? Is it keepers screaming "AWAY"? Is it the arbitrary addition of stoppage time? There is also plenty of time to hate on Dallas, who may now be the focal point of hatred from SKC Nation this year. As always we have a comprehensive and analytical preview of the upcoming match. What to do with the lineup after that heavy squad rotation midweek? Learn more about your ad choices. The games are coming quickly but we're cranking out new episodes as fast as we can! Cody, Robert, & Thad were back at it again on Monday night talking all things Sporting Kansas City and MLS. A break is coming however, as the Colorado Rapids match on October 21st has been postponed with no rescheduled date in sight. How exactly will MLS handle this? Nine points from the last three matches with a depleted lineup is nothing to scoff at. More importantly, we are starting to see some consistency on the backline as Winston Reid & Roberto Puncec seemed to have locked down the centerback positions, and Amadou Dia looks sharp at left back. Erik Hurtado was in top form in the 2-1 win over Nashville SC. But it was again off the bench. Has he done enough to earn a spot in the Starting XI with Alan Pulido on national team duty with Mexico? We also take a look at any lineup questions heading into (another) the match with FC Dallas on Wednesday. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Is a centerback finally grabbing hold of the reigns on the backline? Winston Reid has turned in a couple strong performances in a row, including heading home a match winner. We give ourselves a pat on the back for supporting him, of course. Daniel Salloi is still really struggling. Is it possible the situation is worse than we thought? Peter Vermes spoke to the media ahead of Sunday's match against Nashville SC and gave an update on Graham Zusi's injury. Gianluca Bio also joined in as he's now one of the team's star players. Thad asked him his thoughts on his EA Sports FIFA rating. Also the club has announced a trade has been made, but has not shared many details.

The win over the Houston Dynamo was reminiscent of pre-pandemic Sporting Kansas City. When it looked like this team were going to be unstoppable and win all the trophies. Alan Pulido made his glorious return with two fantastic goals and SKC is back on track, right?! Wrong. Just when you think something good is coming, the universe reminds you it is the year 2020. But it is a great thing for Pulido to be back representing Mexico with El Tri. It's a good look for Major League Soccer, and Sporting KC in particular. There's no time to daydream about his quality as the Chicago Fire are coming to Children's Mercy Park for a showdown on Wednesday night, and the striker won't be there. Gadi Kinda is available after a yellow card suspension which means there will be an odd man out in the midfield. Is Roger Espinoza 100%? Ask and you shall receive! Aly Trost (now) from 810 Sports Radio joins us for an episode to reunite the original Shades of Blue crew! It strangely doesn't seem like much has changed as the conversations were quite similar to a couple years ago. Who should play winger? Why do they keep dominating games without getting the win? What is Khiry Shelton's best position? Sporting Kansas City has VERY rough stretch coming up with NINE games over a 30 day period. Squad rotation seems like a must, but Peter Vermes. We try to figure out how many games Graham Zusi will play. Nine. It'll be nine. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The show was joined by long-time SKC player and current TV Color Analyst, Jake Peterson, to talk about the current state of Sporting Kansas City and hear some fun stories from his playing days. Being such a recent former player, it was really great to get Peterson's perspective on the struggles the team is having, as well as the impact that this pandemic has had on the MLS season. What centerback pairing would he go with? Who has underperformed this year? We ask the questions and Jake always has - wait for it - THE ANSWER. But the real fun starts when he talks about his exploits as a player. One of the best almost-fighter's the club has seen in years was known to get into tussles on the training ground. But did he really fight a trialist in front of Victory Project kids? There are plenty of stories including how he only ever saw one red card in his career, and it came while he was chilling on the bench. Learn more about your ad choices. It's a darker shade of blue this week with Sporting Kansas City reeling after a 2-1 loss to Orlando City on Wednesday. But we try to find some lighter shades to brighten things up for you. It doesn't feel right to ask the question. Several months ago this would have been blasphemy. How dare we? But after seeing Ilie Sanchez's return to the field in Gianluca Busio's absence, would you prefer to have the youngster starting for you at #6? Peter Vermes hinted that Matt Besler might have picked up an injury, but there was more shuffling in the back line on Wednesday. We try to definitively come up with Sporting KC's best center back pairing. ... I said, "try". We also discuss Alan Pulido's return and his willingness to track back and help facilitate play. We've got a new podcast fresh off a Peter Vermes press conference ahead of SKC's Saturday matinee against FC Dallas! Jimmy Mack joins Cody & Thad to get you ready for another important match. It took a few questions on the subject, but Vermes divulged more information on Alan Pulido's absence the last three matches. The striker is back to training with the team and is potentially available for selection on Saturday. Vermes continued to explain that Roger Espinoza is probably the only player he would list as "questionable". Might we see the return of Ilie? Or did Busio swoop his spot? After getting a big 1-0 win over Minnesota, Sporting Kansas City are back on top of the Western Conference. But were they really good or was Minnesota United really bad? Several players like Graham Zusi and Johnny Russell redeemed themselves with good performances, youngsters Gianluca Busio & Felipe Hernandez looked sharp, and the Gadi-Gerso combination is going to be fun to watch. The long-awaited, mythical DP Striker Alan Pulido has missed three games in a row. But the only thing we've heard is he suffered a knock and has been day-to-day all of September. COVID has change a few league protocols and if Peter Vermes isn't forced to give away intel on his players, why in the world would he? We've got a new podcast for you this week, with some upgraded audio, in which we cover Sporting Kansas City's loss to the Houston Dynamo, have a debate about Ilie and Busio that will make you squirm, give an explanation about Alan Pulido, and preview this weekend's match against Minnesota United FC. The entire SKC defense has been beaten several times this year by one pass. What is different this year and why do there seem to be so many holes? Thad Bell, attack him on Twitter @TheBackpost, says he's starting Gianluca Busio over the beloved Ilie Sanchez. How could this be? Help us prove him wrong, please. Alan Pulido and his wife jetted off to Chicago and, to the surprise of nobody, the internet panicked. But we've got a reasonable explanation for everything to calm you down a bit. A touchy subject for many fans is Ike Opara. It's common to joke about the egregious mistake in letting him go among Sporting faithful. But Ike is once again hurt and not on the field. BACK AT IT AGAIN! MLS regular season is back, Sporting Kansas City is back, and your favorite SOB is back. However, Tuesday's 5-2 loss against the Houston Dynamo in the anticipated return to Children's Mercy Park was a big disappointment. Peter Vermes has been throwing anyone and everyone out there on the back line, and nothing seems to be clicking just yet. Who has been the best centerback? The worst? Is there a best pairing yet? Is Matt Besler going to struggle to find the field this year? There are just so many questions right now, and that is just about centerbacks. We discuss Graham Zusi at length and get an update on Luis Martins. Is there even a backup right back at the moment? Jaylin Lindsey looked pretty bad, but nobody is too worried about him. It's not all bad, though. SKC still sit on top of the Western Conference, I'll have you know. We also look at the other positives the team has going right now. Learn more about your ad choices. The trio talks about Sporting Kansas City's first win of 2020 including great showings from Luis Martins, Gadi Kinda, & Alan Pulido. Peter Vermes deployed Khiry Shelton on the right wing, pushing Johnny Russell to the left. While Russell may have been hard to notice at times, it sounds like this was a tactical choice for the specific matchup with the Houston Dynamo. You may see Johnny on the right very soon. Graham Zusi looked horrendous on the goal, but is he really that bad? There were also some interesting tidbits from the training ground ahead of Media Day. Learn more about your ad choices. I may not have been able to get my fellow podcasters excited, but Matchday 1 for Sporting Kansas City is almost here! The regular crew was joined by Daniel Sperry of MLSSoccer.com & The Last Word to preview the season in the last show before real life soccer is back. The starting lineup, just as Peter Vermes would like, is not exactly known yet. Could Khiry Shelton really be starting on the right wing? Who is the odd man out in the midfield whenever Felipe Gutierrez returns? And who is the starting right back? Plus there are even more questions when it comes to the depth chart and squad rotation. We love a good meaningless prediction, and this show is full of them! We set the Over/Under for goals scored this season, as well as goals conceded, at 50.5. There are some important questions -as well as wildly unimportant ones - that must be asked. This show does that for you. We can't answer them, but hey we ask them. Learn more about your ad choices. The 2020 preseason has wrapped for Sporting Kansas City and although they didn't light the world on fire, there were some positives to takeaway. Cody, Thad, and Robert got together to discuss the good, the bad, and the ugly. It is an important time to avoid overreacting to these 'scrimmages'. Especially if you are holding out hope for a Daniel Salloi recovery and Alan Pulido becoming the top striker in Major League Soccer. The two of them had some moments to make you wonder, but how much stock can you really put into preseason performance? Nobody looked particularly sharp but this is precisely the time to get those things worked out. Roberto Puncec appears to have secured his spot as the starting CB over Botond Barath, and will pair with Matt Besler. Luis Martins also looked primed and ready for the season. Khiry "Kirby" Shelton started on the wing the entire preseason and played pretty well, but will he really be the starter over Gerso Fernandes and push Johnny Russell to the left flank? We're inching closer to the new season! The kits are released, the launch party was a success, and Sporting Kansas City is wrapping up the preseason. So we were joined by Chad Reynolds, Creative Director of Sporting Kansas City to get the inside scoop on the team. The Swiss Dots of the new secondary kit have been received quite well by SKC fans and MLS fans alike. That is, of course, after an initial dislike of leaked images. It's so easy to look at a design and say, "Why didn't you do this? Or, "It should have some of that on it." But the years' long process of kit design is a very interesting and often times frustrating job. Chad discusses the intricacies of the new kit as well as his favorite & least favorite ones since he joined the team all the way back in 2006. Where is the napkin containing the original sketch of the "State Line"? When will you bring back the argyle? Why did you design a jersey that looks like it has been run over by a truck? Chad. Peter Vermes has added another piece to his midfield ahead of the 2020 season with the arrival of Gadi Kinda. In this episode Cody, Robert, and Thad cover all your questions about the 25-year-old out of Beitar Jerusalem. As it often goes, there has been some confusion around the terms of the deal. Is Kinda here on loan or is it just a straight transfer? His agent and former coach have referred to the deal as a transfer, while Sporting Kansas City says it is a loan. We also talk about the money and whether he is a Designated Player or not. But how important are those labels anymore anyway? Vermes sees Kinda as a box-to-box, #8 midfielder who possesses the strict defensive standards he requires from his players, while being dangerous going forward as well. So where will he play? Will he fight Roger Espinoza for playing time? Robert wonders what this means for the plethora of young talent with SKC and if it will be another year where the likes of Felipe Hernandez & Gianluca Busio aren't able to get enough first team minutes. The move gives Vermes options on all lines now. They can be adaptable as is required by the league now. We look at different ways Kinda can be used and who he might play with. The question that will always be asked.... is he worth the money? The league has changed and what it takes to get a younger player with potential costs a pretty penny. SKCII have also added a key piece. Kaveh Rad featured heavily last year and now the 18-year-old academy kid got a professional contract. Thad explains that his path could set the example needed to keep prospects from going to play in the NCAA. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
A new year and a new season of the Shades of Blue Soccer Show! That's right, they have yet to kick us out of the studio. And we are starting this year off with a bang as club legend Jimmy Nielsen joins Cody, Robert, and Thad for a very long show. The White Puma was rather candied as he spoke about his youth career all the way up to his coaching career. He and his family have come back to KC after a brief stint as the head coach of Hartford Athletic, where he was far from happy. He shared some wonderfully kind words about Kansas City that will warm the heart of any native. The Cauldron, of course, gave him fond memories that we all enjoyed revisiting. For the league and club's 25th anniversary season, we will be having on several former players and staff all season long to take a look back through the years. We asked Nielsen his thoughts on the progression of Sporting Kansas City and Major League Soccer as a whole. He had some hilarious stories to tell about shenanigans of old teammates like Casey Keller, Kei Kamara, and even an Aurélien Collin hangover at training. We also hit him with rapid fire questions like his most hated MLS player, best friend, funniest teammate, and worst game he can remember. His coaching mind was also put to the test in naming his Sporting KC All-Decade team. Hear him describe the fateful 2013 MLS Cup Final in which he played 120 minutes then won in PK's with a broken rib. "I was in pain. I couldn't get out of bed. I could not sit on the toilet. But I didn't want to miss that one," the puma explains. "I took injections and tried everything. I had a shot in my ass, I had shots directly into my ribs, everything!" This man is an absolute legend. Yet somehow not an official Sporting Legend. What exactly are they waiting for? Sit back, relax, and enjoy a deep dive into the good ol' days! Wednesday was a historic day as Sporting Kansas City announced the long-awaited singing of a Designated Player striker. We talk about the money and what it means to the club, we talk about Alan Pulido as a player, and then after the break we discuss his expectations and what the new Starting XI looks like. Jimmy Mack joined the show for the first time along with Thad and Cody. Whether the price was $9.5 million or closer to $6 million, Peter Vermes held to his word about jumping a couple tiers into MLS 3.0. He spoke of "plateau negotiating" in the media conference call on Thursday. Listen to a clip of what he describes as an interesting situation in spending more money. Liga MX strikers have a fantastic track record of translating their success in Major League Soccer. Sporting KC appear to have finally found that proven scorer who will simply put away the chances he's given, something they've missed all the way back to the days of Dom Dwyer. Can the 28-year-old Mexico international possibly live up to the expectations that come with a deal of this size? What exactly does a success look like in year one? Does it have more to do with his personal goal/assist tally, or the success of the team in 2020? We also look at the current roster and how he will fit in next to Johnny Russell and Felipe Gutierrez, an exciting attacking trio. Might Vermes deploy Pulido alongside a second striker like Khiry "Kirby" Shelton? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Plenty to talk about this week as Major League Soccer announced the 2020 conference alignment on Tuesday, the KC Comets are in action, and the potential for Peter Vermes to spend money at a new level. David Beckham's Miami will enter the Eastern Conference and Nashville will play in the Western Conference which makes the two even at 13 teams a piece. However, this means the schedule is now unbalanced and each team will no longer play every other team in the league over the course of a season. What might this mean for the Supporters' Shield? How long will it remain like this? And where will Sporting Kansas City end up when they finally reach 30 teams? The re-entry draft also continued this week with Juan Agudelo & Saad Abdul-Salaam being selected. Our thoughts & prayers go out to SAS in his new venture with Cincinnati FC. We also spend some time in the Kansas City Comets and Thad will let you know what they have been up to. Vermes recently had a press conference in which he spoke a lot about new capital and SKC jumping up a level or two with their spending. It has been met with a lot of cynicism from Sporting KC faithful who think they've heard this before. But this rhetoric is is absolutely different than we have seen in years past. Thatwillingness has been on display already as the team has been linked with Alan Pulido & Lucas Cavallini, two Liga MX strikers, who both have a transfer fee much higher than anything SKC has touched before. But can they actually land one of these players? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The podcast crew was finally back at it again for another episode on Thanksgiving week. It has been a while so everyone was a bit rusty and things got weird, but we cover everything happening in the SKC-verse right now. The expansion draft is done and the roster moves have been announced. We share what we like and of course what we didn't like, for the team as well as for our hearts. Peter Vermes can now focus on filling in any holes he sees on the roster and we'll tell you what we would like to see. You'll get a full rundown of all the players who are out but Jimmy Medranda is the one that hurts us the most. But we talk about how and why this happened so we can begin the stages of grieving. Seth Sinovic is another fan favorite that sparks a debate about Sporting Legends that brings in the departure of Benny Feilhaber as well. We cover the Adrian Zendejas trade and the current keeper situation. Although Dick jokes are very difficult to avoid. Is there anyone you are happy to see gone? The frustrating Krisztian Nemeth and his salary sure are a weight off SKC shoulders. After the break we look at the remaining players currently on the roster and anyone we are surprised to see. Botond Barath survived the expansion draft and Andreu Fontas is back for another year, but should we be surprised? With the Expansion Draft complete and roster moves announced, we can look ahead at what Sporting Kansas City needs on the roster for the 2020 campaign. The long-standing, all-to-obvious, mythical DP striker is the first topic of discussion. We take a long look at the rumors about Candadian international Lucas Cavallini. Daniel loves the idea of this and he will get you excited about this potential acquisition. What other holes need filled on this roster? Bob wants to see some speed/athleticism on the back line. We talk about the midfield and try to decide if Daniel Salloi and Gerso Fernandes are enough on the left wing to be successful. You just knew it was going to happen right? Sporting Kansas City was officially eliminated from playoff contention after letting Minnesota United come from behind to win 2-1 on Wednesday night. That match, and the loss to the Colorado Rapids, were both done in the same fashion. SKC fans saw an early lead and were bracing for a collapse that we all knew was coming. Cody, Robert, and Thad were in the studio and actually in pretty good spirits. Missing the playoffs was a forgone conclusion for a while and now that it's official, the pressure is off. A weight has been lifted! But we looked back at the last two losses and talked about Daniel Salloi's struggles, the ratio of Gerso Fernandes' proximity to goal vs the likelihood he will score, and Gianluca Busio's performance. You'll also get a little bit of Ultimate Frisbee talk as a bonus. After the break we took some time to touch on the situation with the South Stand Supporters Club and the SKC front office. The South Stand has been asked to move to the Cauldron, which does not make a whole lot of sense to us. We end the show by talking about this weekend's match with the Portland Timbers. Peter Vermes' team doesn't have anything to play for, other than being a spoiler, so he can have some fun with the lineup now. Do you play the kids? Is there any point in putting Krisztian Nemeth on the field? Does Graham Smith get another chance this season? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
We here at The Blue Testament understand your pain and want to provide a safe space to express yourself and work through emotions during this difficult time. Cody, Robert, & Thad got in the studio to share what is on their minds after Sporting Kansas City were destroyed by the Galaxy, eliminating (nearly) all hope of making the playoffs. We look for other, more positive soccer topics to discuss, including the good things going on from the Swope Park Rangers. And we finish by discussing this weekend's match vs the Colorado Rapids. Just lay down on our couch and let us know how that 7-2 beating from the Los Angeles Galaxy makes you feel. We aren't used to this sort of thing as Sporting KC fans. As Thad points out, this is the first time as SKC they haven't made the playoffs, the first time with a full season of Vermes, and first time in Children's Mercy Park as well! We're lucky to have had the last decade of quality soccer. But we share everything on our minds and what has everyone upset. After the break we checked in with the USWNT, the USMNT, and Swope Park for better things to discuss. Felipe Hernandez is a new homegrown signing from the academy that the guys are excited about. With the pressure mostly gone, the lineup discussion is more interesting. Do you play the kids? Do you fight for that 3% chance to make the post season? The fan poll has returned some interesting results, especially at striker. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
We're all feeling things we have never felt with Sporting Kansas City on the brink of elimination before the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade. Cody and Robert sit down for some group therapy, or a podcast, rather. Certain players will have a lot to prove before the offseason arrives, but first we look at this weekend's match-up against Zlatan and the Los Angeles Galaxy. The podcast was recorded just before the Major League Soccer Wednesday night matches, but SKC is focusing on four teams. RSL, DAL, POR, and LAG are technically within striking distance and SKC needs at least two of them to falter. Which two teams give us the best chance to make a miraculous run to the post season? Peter Vermes has a lot of decisions to make this off season. But the players have a few more games to make their mark. We go line-by-line to decide who has the most to prove. Daniel Salloi is the most obvious, but a couple players on the backline have questions to be answered as well. And can Erik Hurtado cement himself in this club's future plans? The Galaxy have shown a few cracks lately and Robert thinks their defense has a lot of problems for Sporting to exploit. But how do you stop Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his 23 goals - should you focus on him, or preventing the service to him? Cristian Pavón has been a fantastic addition to the league and it's possible we could see the return of Romain Alessandrini. There aren't many questions about the lineup this weekend, except in the midfield. Does Ilie Sanchez resume his starting role or will Felipe Gutierrez start at holding midfield with Benny Feilhaber getting the nod again? Learn more about your ad choices. This week's podcast covers SKC's 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo, a huge match on Saturday in Portland, as well as a USA vs Mexico discussion. Graham Smith has stepped up when this team needed it the most. He's solidified the back line during a string of wins by one-goal margins and provided help on the attacking end as well. Ilie Sanchez has been getting a break recently, starting on the bench with Gutierrez in his spot. Why has this been working so well? Many have tried to replace Seth Sinovic, and Luis Martins is next in line to attempt it. He has been improving every game and the Sporting Kansas City win over the Dynamo was his best yet. Can he hold that spot down? Of course, with the biggest game of the year coming up against the Portland Timbers, Sporting will be without six players. Felipe Gutierrez and Johnny Russell will have the biggest impact. What will this mean for Peter Vermes' lineup. and can they still pull out a win to go level with the Timbers? It's time for the United States Men's National Team to get back in action, and for the first time in a very long time, we aren't entirely disappointed in the selection. In the absence of Michael Bradley, Alfredo Morales is back in the mix much to the surprise of Cody. But the young guys have a chance to impress against Mexico and Uruguay. Might we see someone like Sergino Dest solidify himself with the Yanks? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
This week it was just Cody and Thad in the studio taking a couple questions from Twitter about Yohan Croizet, the string of call-ups for Sporting Kansas City players, and what sort of impact it will have on the team. We also look ahead and preview potential lineups against the Houston Dynamo this weekend. Where in the world is Croizet? Is he even technically still with the team? Is it the team or the player that has created this situation? We discuss what Peter Vermes had to say about it. Johnny Russel, Boton Borath, Krisztian Nemeth, Felipe Gutierrez, Nico Hasler, and Gianluca Busio have all been called into their respective national teams and will be leaving the team after the Houston match. SKC will be without them for an incredibly important match with the Portland Timbers. But for this weekend, it looks like almost everyone is back to health. What will Vermes do with so many options for his lineuup this week? We've got the report from the training ground. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
With an odd Thursday match this week Cody, Robert, and Thad have a fresh new podcast covering all things Sporting Kansas City - and Missouri soccer. Saturday's big comeback win over San Jose Earthquakes was a breath of fresh air as we saw glimpses of the SKC team we know and love. But will it actually be the start of something, or will they follow this up with another loss as we've seen several times this season? Graham Smith has established himself as the backup centerback to Besler & Barath, plus Luis Martins had a solid match by not being very noticeable. St. Louis has finally been awarded an MLS team. It has been a long time coming and will mean a lot for soccer in Midwest, the league, and for fans wanting to see a true rivalry. But what might this mean for the expansive Sporting KC Academy? Minnesota United is far from a real rival, as the fans from both teams are as friendly with eachother as humanly possible. Thad is really "peeved" about the late 8:30pm kickoff in the middle of the week. What was MLS thinking? Our old friend Ike Opara will make his way back to Children's Mercy Park as part of the 2nd place team in the West. We talk about his impact on leaving SKC and arriving in Minnesota. We'll also tell you who was training and who is likely to be in Peter Vermes' starting lineup for another important match to keep playoff hopes alive. Learn more about your ad choices. We're officially in the darkest timeline.. But the podcast is here to fix Sporting Kansas City. Cody, Robert, and Thad were in the studio to discuss Wednesday's disappointing loss at the hands of Orlando City. Peter Vermes was forced into three experiments in this one with Gianluca Busio on the wing, Jimmy Medranda up top, and Graham Smith at centerback. We decide what worked and what should never, ever happen again. A new segment was introduced this week as the team struggles so heavily - Pod Save the Team. Because we have all the answers on this podcast. What can be done to fix this and get SKC into the post season? We were also joined by Daniel Sperry once again and he was able to share with us some great insight into Saturday's opponent, the San Jose Earthquakes. And as always we go through each part of the lineup and figure out what Peter Vermes should do with his Starting XI this weekend. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Every time we think this Sporting Kansas City team is ready to climb out of the abyss, they just sink deeper. They had a big opportunity to chip away at their deficit in the playoff race against Real Salt Lake on Saturday but after a 2-1 loss, they are sitting eight points out right now. Misery loves company right? We were joined by Daniel Sperry to talk about the loss and prepare for the midweek match against Orlando City. A Peter Vermes team is always very organized and smart on defense. Always, except for right now. We talk about what is going on with the defense and why things look so different than SKC fans are used to from their defense. Felipe Gutierrez had us talking last week about him being the leader and perhaps putting the team on his back, but his missed penalty put a damper on things. Another play from the RSL match that proved vital was the no-call on a penalty kick. What say you... pen or no pen? Daniel Salloi has yet to score in what has been an incredibly disappointing MLS season for him, which was underlined by a head scratching tackle that earned him a red card. The 23-year-old has a resounding lack of confidence at the moment. But he is a streaky player as we saw last year, perhaps he just needs one lucky moment to get him on track. Our old friends Dom Dwyer and Uri Rosell await Sporting KC in Orlando on Wednesday, although neither of them have been playing every match. Is it possible that the whole "spiritual home" thing was nonsense? Could that really be? Thad was at training and has all the bits you need to know on who is fit for Wendesday. We go through each spot in the roster to come up with a starting lineup in spite of the injuries and suspension. Daniel makes up a new word. Learn more about your ad choices. The gang's all here! Aly was back at it again on Wednesday night with Cody, Robert, and Thad to revisit the huge win over Seattle and preview Saturday's equally important match with RSL. Sporting Kansas City got the 3-2 win over the Seattle Sounders last week on the back of a Felipe Gutierrez brace. The Chilean has stepped up as of late, both on and off the field. Can he be the guy to put SKC on his back and climb up the ladder into the playoffs? We also discuss the encouraging start (and goal) from Erik Hurtado in Krisztian Nemeth's absence. He brings something different to the table and the fans are here for it. Botond Borath has claimed the starting role, but is Andreu Fontas really as bad as the criticism he's been receiving? He won't be winning a footrace anytime soon, but the entire back line is lacking in the speed department. Do you blame centerbacks or the fullbacks? There was also some breaking news while we were recording as Kelyn Rowe was traded to RSL in exchange for $75,000 in TAM as well as an international roster spot. He was unable to contribute much on the field in his short time here, so it was a fairly easy choice for Peter Vermes to move him and open up that international spot. Real Salt Lake is coming to KC on Saturday for what is a real big match (I'll see myself out). They will be without head coach Mike Petke who has been suspended by MLS and additionally by RSL for an outburst after a match. We'll also tell you who is training, who is match fit, and who the fans want to see in the Starting XI. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The podcast is back after a buy week to discuss Sporting Kansas City's loss to FC Dallas, players returning from injury, and give a preview of Friday's match in NYC. There was something in the stadium on July 20th that prevent anyone from making a shot on target. Everyone except Dallas, that is. We discuss Saturday's Media Game and how Cody wasn't the only one who couldn't manage a shot on target. SKC took 18 shots on the day and it wasn't until later in the 2nd half they managed to get two of them on goal. Coming off two straight wins it was a gut punch to lose this one at home. But the return of Roger Espinoza was a breath of fresh air and something this team was missing desperately for too long. We have seen the light at the end of the tunnel for this stretch of injuries and everyone is back training except for Jaylin Lindsey and Rodney Wallace. Roger is a big one but while we still have the famous question of "Who is the striker" right now, Erik Hurtado will be welcomed back with open arms. We have a lineup discussion at all parts of the field. Does Yohan Croizet or Krisztian Nemeth get the nod up top? Who do you play in the absence of Felipe Gutierrez (yellow card accumulation)? Benny Feilhaber or Gianluca Busio? Does Vermes change the back line after a shaky performance last week? New York City FC has historically (heh) been defined by big stars, but they are finding success this season without a household name. They know how to play on their small field, but unleashing crazy people like Espinoza and Croizet in a small area might be really fun to watch. As always, you'll find a lot of positivity and optimism as we look ahead to this match. ...Especially without Thad on the pod this week. Learn more about your ad choices. Riddled with injuries and inter-state duty, the podcast roster was down to Cody and Thad this week. But the summer of soccer has given us a lot to discuss as of late. The United States Women's National Team are FIFA World Cup Champions for the fourth time and the celebrations have been so much fun to watch! The USMNT were able to make the Gold Cup final against Mexico, but still came up a bit short falling 1-0. And SKC get a much needed win that hopefully marks the beginning of their climb through the ranks of the West. With Megan Rapinoe & Rose Lavelle netting the goals, the US took down the Netherlands to become World Champs yet again. The country, especially Kansas City, were all the way behind them and the party has yet to stop. The girls are enjoying the wave, but how long will this last? Can the NWSL parlay this hype into something more for the sport? The scenes from PnL (somehow) had some wondering if fans were to blame for the demise of FCKC. Thad is a HUGE fan of the women's game and we discuss the failures of their ownership as well as problems with fans. We also spent some time on the USMNT's Gold Cup performance. While the end result may not have been what everyone wanted, there was progress made. We are witnessing a changing of the guard as Weston McKennie, Aaron Long, and Christian Pulisic take charge of the team. But there is still clearly a long way to go - on the field and off. Can Omar Gonzalez really be a part of the team going forward? The same could be asked of Michael Bradley as well. Yohan Croizet has scored in back-to-back matches and Sporting Kansas City moved out of last place in the Western Conference. The Transfer Window has opened and Peter Vermes claims to be looking at 30 players, but Cody & Thad think the most useful reinforcements will come by way of players returning from injury. Aside from Jaylin Lindsey and Rodney Wallace, everyone is training again. Roger Espinoza is on the road back for a huge boost in the midfield, and Erik Hurtado is nearing a return as well. Hurtado should light a fire under the struggling Krisztian Nemeth. There will be some choices to make for the lineup against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday. We come up with a game-plan for the lineup and substitutions to get a win. The fans are leaning towards Graham Zusi over Nico Hasler, but perhaps more surprising is Croizet leading the way over Nemeth at striker. Learn more about your ad choices. It's a great week for soccer in Kansas City with Sporting finally getting a win over Columbus, the United States Women beat Spain in the World Cup, and the USMNT is coming to Children's Mercy Park on Wednesday! Cody, Bob, and Thad were in the studio on Monday night to talk about all the wins coming in. The match may not have been the prettiest, but Sporting Kansas City claimed all three points over the Columbus Crew and are starting to show signs of their old selves. Tim Melia was back to his old tricks as he bailed the team out more times than we can count. Botond Barath also gets some praise in the podcast after establishing himself as a rock for the defense. Benny Feilhaber had absolutely no idea what was going on when SKC got the goal. It was a really, really bad look for him. But the podcast found it hilarious. Spain proved to be quite the test for the USWNT on Monday, but they advance after two penalty kicks that sparked a lot of discussion. Don't you just love a good ol' "Pen or No-Pen" argument?! With the USMNT in town and training at Pinnacle, Thad got to hear from Gregg Berhalter and get a glimpse of training as well. What does Gyasi Zardes do better than Jozy Altidore? Does Berhalter switch up the lineup to rest anyone? There is a lot to unwrap with the national team right now and we even reminisce on past USA matches in KC. Learn more about your ad choices. Sporting Kansas City took a week off and the podcast decided to use that time to recover as well. Cody, Aly, Robert, and Thad were back in the studio to cover a very busy summer of soccer. The Women's World Cup is in full swing and the USWNT caused a stir with their celebrations in a 13-0 win. The United States Men's National Team kicks off the Gold Cup after struggling heavily as of late. Plus, Sporting Kansas City will try to pull themselves out of a slump against the Columbus Crew this weekend. Aly and Thad have some strong opinions on Megan Rapinoe's (perhaps) excessive celebration. This is the World Cup, not little league. But where do you stand? Was this a close-knit team having fun - or was it rubbing it in the face of a team that didn't stand a chance? The USMNT has been quite the dumpster fire and they haven't inspired a ton of confidence heading into the Concacaf Gold Cup that they kicked off on Wednesday night. The team has gotten away from what so many fans took pride in - grit. What is the minimum this team needs to show in this tournament? The lineup for Sporting Kansas City is slowing starting to look better. Despite still missing likes of Roger Espinoza, Peter Vermes has a lot more firepower to work with. We ask the question, "Can things get any worse?" Players are returning and it feels like brighter days are ahead, but things must improve quickly. Learn more about your ad choices. Something has to give, right? Sporting KC got the monkey off their back with a 3-2 win over Seattle Sounders, but the troubles continued against a tough Los Angeles Galaxy team. Vermes' hand has been forced several times and he is just clearly "over it" when it comes to the injuries, suspensions, and national team duty. The crew discusses the last two matches, including Johnny F. Russell in all his glory. In the Seattle match, we saw Yohan Croizet step up to the challenge and really have a big impact on the win. But after just three days rest, Croizet - and the rest of the team - was a little flat-footed. The lack of rest definitely played a role, but SKC had plenty of chances to get a result against the Galaxy. They were punished for two mistakes with two goals. Looking ahead to the weekend, SKC travel to take on the Houston Dynamo. Just what the doctor ordered... another match on short rest in the Texas heat. Things won't be getting easier as the Dynamo are off to a hot start this season. We examine potential lineups and update the injury report as well. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Conceding the late goal to the Vancouver Whitecaps extended Sporting Kansas City's winless streak to seven games and this podcast is running short on positivity. But Cody, Aly, & Thad are here to talk you off the ledge. We find something good - and something bad - from last weekend's gut punch of a draw. The progression is happening, the team is starting to look like themselves again, but the result was the same. Yohan Croizet has been a hot button issue and the podcast is incredibly disappointed in his performance this season. But Matt Besler is back and his teammates and coach could not be happier about it. Taking a look at the stoppage time equalizer, we decide the majority of the blame goes to Felipe Gutierrez, although it appeared most of the team switched off for that vital moment. Peter Vermes was recently interviewed and he mentioned SKC's pursuit of both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Giovanni Dos Santos. While it is hard to say how extensive these were, it does show this team's search for players is never ending. The team you love to hate, the Seattle Sounders, come to town this weekend. They will be without a player who has inflicted plenty of damage to SKC, Chad Marshall, who announced his retirement this week. Thad gives an extensive report from training and Peter Vermes on the outlook of the lengthy injury report. Find out who is nearing return, and who the team will be without for the next several weeks. As always we get a close look at the lineup with the help of our readers in our weekly lineup poll. Who does SKC Nation want to start? And whose parents are just voting for them? The gang were back at it again but this time we had a very special guest. Rob Thomson, Sporting Kansas City Chief Communications Officer stopped in the studio for what was going to be a segment of our regular podcast. It ended up too long and so much fun that it needed to be a standalone pod. For those who dod not know, Rob (or Robo as we all know him) has been with the team since 1997 and has wore a lot of hats in that time. He has known almost every player and has been (at least one of the people) behind most of the great PR moves, promotions and practical jokes that Sporting KC has pulled off so well.
The chat was supposed to be mostly about the old days but it ranged from stories about the old days to how Sporting KC went through the rebrand. We even find out a potential name before Sporting Kansas City was chosen (and yes it was bad).

Back at it again! Robert, Cody and Thad get together again with a little time between games. What an interesting match with New York that was. The big discussion point was of course the well deserved red card to Kaku. The real question is what will MLS do with him. Additional suspension? Fines? Make him stay in New York?
Busio scored his thrid straight goal in three games. A good year so far for the 16-year-old. How much more will we see him?

We break down what went so well for SKC against Toluca and whether or not they can keep it up versus their MLS opponents.
With a short turnaround we discuss what kind of lineup Peter Vermes will put out at LAFC on Sunday.

The crew was finally back at it again on Wednesday night after a couple weeks off. Cody, Aly, & Bob broke in the studio and looked ahead to the final five matches of the season. Is first place within their grasp? What is the best lineup to get them there? So much to discuss!
Three at home. Two away. Every single point will make waves in the Western Conference playoff race and each remaining opponent is battling for their spot.
This is going to be fun.
The show covers each match and gives you an idea of what it will take from SKC to get that playoff game at Children’s Mercy Park. Taking a look at the lineup, Bob wonders, “Is Krisztian Nemeth a CF or isn’t he?” He’s played winger for Vermes but was brought in to fill a void at striker.
The versatility on this roster brings up a fun question for Sporting fans. What is your preferred LW/CF/RW combination? Forget about who is injured and what you think Peter Vermes will do. Let us know in the comments what front-three you’d select.
There is also a discussion about Daniel Salloi. He has seen so much of the bench lately it is starting to look like he is in the dog house. After last week’s performance from Gerso, Vermes’ selection will tell us a lot.

Ten matches to go.
Things are looking good for Sporting Kansas City at the moment but this team has a terrible track record in finishing the regular season. Cody, Thad, and Bob got in the studio to discuss what it will take for SKC to bring a postseason match back to Children’s Mercy Park.
Diego Rubio is in top form right now and receiving tons of praise around the league. The Chilean has given Peter Vermes no choice but to start him once again this weekend. No doubt the arrival of Krisztian Nemeth has played a role in lighting a fire underneath Rubio.
We’ve got audio from PV as he looks at the final stretch of the season. He sounds confident and pleased with where his team is at. Bob figures Sporting will need 15 points to secure 2nd place, and possibly eight for 4th place. Will that be enough? Can this team take that many points from a tough schedule?
Minnesota United are paying a visit on Saturday and it looks like three points, on paper. But we know how this team operates. Three points at Atlanta is no problem, but the Rapids give them fits.
There is also a good discussion about Brad Evans and his impact (or lack there of) on the club this year.
Extra-Time topics include the recent release of Amazon’s All or Nothing: Manchester City, as well as a discussion about the first all-female sports broadcast crew over the weekend in MLS.

The gang is finally all back together again with lots to discuss. Krisztián Németh is back but will he beat out a suddenly very good Diego Rubio? How will/should Vermes use Nemeth and Rubio? Or the rest of the forward?
It's great to have Felipe Gutierrez back but will he regain his early season form?
Sporting KC reeled off two wins in a row on the road but does that mean the late season swoon is over or will it take more to convince us?
We talk about Andue Fontas and more.

Back together again (without Bob). Sporting KC got their number 9 when they traded for Krisztian Nemeth and picked up defender Andreu Fontas from Celta Vigo. Is that enough? Lots of talk about what difference Nemeth will make for SKC.
We go back and do a quick look at the Houston match. Red cards for Houston but a needed win for SKC.
Sporting KC travels to LAFC for a tough match in their first ever meeting, Former SKC players Benny Feilhaber and Latif Blessing will know the system but will that matter?

Is this Ike Opara's worst season?

Would he be a good fit? Of course we preview the FC Dallas match and try to figure out what lineup will be used. A few other discussions as well of course.

This week on Shades of Blue, we drop the negativity - and Thad. So Cody, Aly and Bob joined forces for your weekly SKC talk. We covered Daniel Salloi and the season he is having, recapped a forgettable Toronto FC game, plus we have injury updates as we look forward to this weekend’s match against the New York Red Bulls.
Bob just wrote an article on Kansas City’s little brother, Daniel Salloi. He shares what he learned in his time with Salloi and we discuss what is next for the Hungarian. With Khiry Shelton out for a month, will he play more CF?
Diego Rubio is sure to see more time, but will he actually step up? Kharlton Belmar looked solid, what about him? And why is Gerso so frustrating? So many questions, so little answers. But hey, we’ll talk about them for you.
Bradley Wright-Phillips and NYRB await Sporting Kansas City in Jersey this weekend. We looked at some key match-ups and all the roster questions.
After seeing a lot of pessimism online among SKC faithful, there is also a lengthy discussion about Peter Vermes and his search for a striker.

The gang gets back together to discuss not one but two games. Sporting KC had a good stretch last week with two wins and a draw. One of those wins was the Open Cup game in Salt Lake. SKC's depth was tested and came through. The Homegrown's were all used and all came thrpough for SKC.
Of course the other big news from the last few days was the vote for the FIFA World Cup coming to North America in 2026.
The next match is FC Dallas in the Open Cup. Can SKC manage the extra games and still go for MLS Cup and Supporters Shield?

Some chat about the red card but lots more about the non-call of the apparent punch to Sinovic's head. What was VAR thinking? Or not thinking?
We have audio from Peter Vermes and Tim Melia in the pod as well.
