Listen in on my interview with fellow Spelman graduate, screenwriter, and painter, Kafia Haile. Kafia's story is one of leaps, risks, faith, and suspense. I hope that as we prepare for a New Year that you are able to hear her story and prepare to make some new decisions for your life as well.

In this episode I had the opportunity to speak with mental health professional Dr. Debbie Stevens. We talk about the intersection of mental health and Christianity, how to talk to your family or friends about suicide, ways that Christians can better breach or discuss the topic, how we felt about the series "13 Reasons Why", and how to get help if you are having these thoughts and feelings.

Just as I was recording this episode, we learned that Pastor Andrew Stoecklein, of Inland Hills Church in Chino, CA, lost his life due to a suicide attempt the night before. His death has left many hurting, wondering why, and asking many questions. There is a lot from Andrew's story and the commentary surrounding his death that can give us insight into the stress he was under just before taking his life and a possible understanding of God's response.
See the last sermon Pastor Stoecklein preached before his attempt, and immediately after being instructed to take a sabbatical because of a recent nervous breakdown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVBe4z2QSRM
See the commentary video after Pastor Stoecklein's funeral. I believe this video helps to reinforce what we communicated in this episode regarding God's ability to understand and cover and receive us, even when we are in deep, deep pain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b1ZOXA6Ydw

In response to President Donald Trump calling for NFL owners to fire the “sons of bitches” kneeling during the national anthem, many more players and even whole teams joined Colin Kaepernick’s original silent protest against police brutality. The response from the NFL-watching community was divided and aggressive...to say the least. I found myself caught up in the discussion thinking I could convince those around me to treat these players with dignity and to respect their rights, but my efforts were futile. Here is a final word (for now) on the matter. #takeaknee

Meet the artist that is traveling the country looking for any opportunity to remind us who we are. Hosanna Poetry is a speaker and poet with a background that would have destroyed many of us before we even got started. A survivor of kidnapping, a witness to murder, and a daughter of parents who minister to the homeless, Hosanna holds nothing back in her attack on false identity and the false narrative so many of us believe because of our experiences or because of the words others have placed on us. An accomplished slam poet, the pegged poet for the national Celebrate Recovery conferences, speaker and full time artist, this is not an interview you want to miss.

I wrote “Goodbye” while counseling a group of men and women who had been assigned to DUI classes as a condition of their sentencing. As we came to the end of the program for some, my supervisor thought my gift would be valuable to the group and so I wrote this and performed it for the class. Alcoholism is destroying families, homes, and lives every single day. Please listen and share if you know someone who might need to hear this message.

He graciously allows us the behind-the-scenes, line-for-line breakdown of one of his unreleased songs “Imagine Me”. Join me and my guest, Kenneth Eishi Yasuda, as we review his poem “In the Midst of the Storm” and talk about some of the core aspects of his personal and artistic journey. Kenny, as I affectionately call him, lets us all in on his upbringing, jail time, getting kicked out the home, his bipolar diagnosis, and ways that the Church can practically improve how we deal with people, not just with mental illness, but in general. Kenny is full of energy and full of information so hang onto your seats!

Join Celita as she navigates the tough and polarizing issue of racial justice, racial reconciliation, and the state of policing and prison policy in this country. This poem, "Who Speaks for Me", was written to encourage a room of white pastors to be a voice for the minority in their specific spheres of influence. Listen as we "say their names" and gather resources to help us all understand this deep-seeded issue.
Be sure to check out the blog that accompanies this episode and all past episodes for the words to the poem, additional links, quotes, and other resources. All of that can be found at http://www.imsimplyartistic.com/poetry

Enjoy this short episode designed to allow you to hear a studio quality version of the poem I introduced last week "Next Right Thing". This version of the spoken word was produced and arranged by Travon Potts who is an accomplished producer that most recently arranged all the music for the Whitney biopic. Definitely look him up and contact him if you are in the market for some serious professional musical intervention. I will release notes and links to Travon's work on my website in partnership with this episode.

Welcome to Part 1 in a Recovery series where I'll be sharing poetry that was specifically written to help myself and others through the 12-step process. We'll be listening to and talking about the poem "Next Right Thing". I won't share all the poetry at once so next week we'll hear from a guest poet. But I will share all of these poems from my personal work first, before branching out into other aspects of my art.
