High School Basketball State Championships! They have arrived and the electricity of this time of year is contagious! All sports work year round to peak and perform at their best when it counts the most and the teams left for the sport of basketball are getting ready to show off on the biggest stage of the season to their schools and communities. These events are not easy to conduct and the team at the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHAA) have been working diligently to make sure the stage is ready. In the studio for this episode are some of the competitors for the Missouri State University Handball Team. The women’s team captured another national title this past week and the men finished 3rd in the nation, while they received runner-up in the combined category. We celebrated, yes, but we did not just talk about handball, but also the value of club sports and being a part of something in college and how it helps graduation rates and the physical and mental health of students. Being involved and socially interacting on a team can be a great retention variable for college students. On Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame inducted St. Louis Cardinals physician, Dr. Brian Mahaffey and Olympic medalist Courtney Frerichs! We catch up with both inductees to chat about their careers and the path they took to accepting a Hall of Fame induction. From high school Cross Country to the Olympic podium, Frerichs has ran her way into the hearts of so many with her perseverance and fortitude during competitions. Dr. Mahaffey has impacted lives at every level from the Missouri State University Bears to the Springfield Cardinals, and now with Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals. His diligence and caring spirit have athletes gravitating toward him and craving his knowledge and empathetic attitude. Last night, Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame inducted Darrell “Smitty” Smith into their Hall of Fame. A successful boxer in his own right he had taken his skills along with two college degrees, law enforcement involvement, and military experience and created a mecca of mentoring with “Smitty’s Mid-West Boxing Gym & Youth Center”. Opening the gym in 2012, Smitty has helped and coached over 1,500 kids using the sport of boxing as a powerful platform. My guest has a heart of gold for kids and will do anything to help them succeed! Thank you, Smitty, for what you do in our community and for what you do for our youth! Also, thank you to his son Israel for helping out with the interview!
Next week (Tuesday, October 4, 2022) the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame will induct six individuals and one Era of Excellence Award. This year’s Era of Excellence award recipient is the Greenwood Laboratory School Football Program – Mullins Era. Coach Paul Mullins, along with quarterbacks Jim Ferguson, Steve Harman, and Alan Rosen from the Greenwood Football Program joined us as we talked about the secret of success of that program and how Coach Mullins and Coach Purvis built a culture around their program. Young coaches and young athletes – listen up and take notes – this is a great episode on building a program!
We are thrilled to have the University of Missouri Men’s Basketball Coach Dennis Gates on tonight to speak about his vision for the Tigers basketball program. We also will be replaying my interview from University of Kansas Men’s Basketball Coach Bill Self from last night’s Boys and Girls Club Steak and Steak Fundraiser. We also catch up with Coach Katie Sowers. Coach Sowers was the first female NFL coach and has worked with the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. She is currently a coach for the Ottawa University National Champion Flag Football team.

Surf’s up! I am totally “stoked” (surfer’s term) to have on this episode world champion, hall of famer surfer, Shaun Tomson! Shaun is a champion surfer, successful businessman, best-selling author, and motivational speaker. He made fame first by being one of the best surfers of all time. He has used his passion for surfing, not just catch the next wave, but to be the next wave, to encourage others to paddle toward their fears and self-doubt and find their purpose and power. His positive message is rippled through his speeches and workshops at corporations and universities worldwide. I was lucky enough to catch up with him – on dry land – and try and capture his message. Heather Harman did a tremendous job bringing this series to the show. It is a conversation that needs to continue and be revisited often. It is so important to navigate the mental side of sports as well as the physical and sport specific sides. It is then that the athletes will reach their maximum potential. We appreciate the double perspective of our guest Nyla Milleson, as she explored the role of college coaches and athletic directors and how they can assist in this journey with the student-athlete. We appreciate the perspective of Heather Harman and Coach Milleson and their valuable points of view on this vital topic.
We continued our conversation with former Drury University standout women’s basketball player, Heather Harman, about the challenges of mental health for college athletes and beyond after eligibility is up. In this episode, we brought in the perspective of the Regional Administrative Director of Mercy Orthopedics Sports Medicine, Jim Raynor, as he explored the role of an athletic trainer and how this role can possibly help with the transition, along with the mental side of rehabilitation.
Next week, we wrap up this series as Heather Harman continues to co-host and we explore how athletic directors can assist in the transition of competitive athletes moving to life after athletics.

In this episode we hosted Missouri State High School Activities Association Executive Director Dr. Kerwin Urhan and Assistant Executive Director Doug Fessler and previewed the upcoming Show-Me Showdown Basketball Championships. The Missouri State Women’s Handball Team did it again by winning another women’s title at the national collegiate handball tournament, with Minnesota State-Mankato coming in second. In the men’s division, Minnesota State-Mankato came in first, Lake Forest second and Missouri State third. The combined trophy went to Minnesota State-Mankato by three points over Missouri State. In tonight’s episode we catch up with the president of the United States Handball Association, Denis Hogan about his vision for growing the sport and encouraging those of all ages to give this game a try. We also spoke with Angelo State University Handball Coach Dr. Warren “Spider” Simpson about his longevity with this sport and the value of cross-training in handball. His growth of the game and the financial support he has received is an impressive avenue for growing the sport. He recently received a one-million-dollar endowment named in his honor and appropriately called the “Dr. Warren Simpson Excellence Fund for Handball”. We close out the show with a little coach’s inspiration as we move into the winter sports championship season.
Tonight, we celebrate the SIXTH Missouri Valley Conference Championship by the Missouri State University Women’s Swimming and Diving Team. Joining us were record setters and champions Anna Miller and Sami Roemer. We learned a little about the secret of their success and the potential to continue the tradition. Thank you to my guests for sharing their championship experience.
We also spoke with College of the Ozarks Head Women’s Basketball Coach Becky Mullis about the loss of coaching legend and icon George Wilson. Coach Wilson was a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame, Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame. His 1,006 career victories pale in comparison to the lasting impact he left on his players and the people that knew him. Thank you to Coach Mullis for her courage and strength as she captured the legacy of this man.
With the Super Bowl being over, it signifies the end of football season. On tonight’s episode we take a moment and reflect on the season with National Coordinator of Instant Replay for the NCAA, Fox Sports NFL and NCAA Rules Analyst, and former coordinator of NFL officials, Dean Blandino. Along with Dean we hosted, Big 10 Referee Ron Snodgrass, and Mid-American Conference Referee Ron Hudson. We discussed the value and evolution of replay and my panel answered various questions sent in by college football coaches. I value their willingness to dive into those questions and I appreciate their competitiveness to always strive to make the right calls and decisions.
We talk often on this show how sports are a parallel for life. In this episode, we spoke with Missouri State University President Clif Smart and Provost Frank Einhellig. During this episode, we related what they do as administrators of a university and what coaches do running successful programs. It is important to see the similarities and how specifically it is guidance on how to be an effective leader for your team. My guests tonight demonstrated valuable direction and advice for embracing what it means to be a strong leader and implementing a positive culture within a team and organization. This is why they have been a dynamic duo at Missouri State University for eleven years. We want to also congratulate Dr. Frank Einhellig on his career and wish him the best in his future retirement. His impact is legendary.
This week, we host Kansas City Chiefs SUPERFANS! Jeff Burnett and Steve Newman as we cry, whine, and dissect the AFC Championship loss of the Kansas City Chiefs. We also dive into the emotions of being a superfan and the effects of being so connected to a team. We talk about hope for the future (too soon?) and the hope that Chiefs superfans have for the team coming back next season stronger and more consistent than ever. We also covered some ‘fun facts’ about the Chiefs. My guests did a great job voicing and capturing what it is like to be a lifelong Chiefs fan!
Tonight, we welcomed one of the most popular mascots in the country, from the Kansas City Chiefs, KC Wolf! Dan Meers has been portraying this popular mascot since 1989 and does such a tremendous job of it. Advice he has for those that are interested in being a mascot? Be a character with character! He represents the Chiefs organization with character and integrity. We thank him for his time and efforts as he energizes the Chiefs nation.
We also spoke with former Olympian Lori Endicott-Vandersnick about sports parenting and the importance of being mindful with your words and actions. The triangle of success involves the athlete, the coaches, and the parents all being on the same page.
To shot clock or not to shot clock? It has been a debate for years. Does the high school basketball game need a shot clock? We debated and reviewed the pros and cons with a veteran coaches panel. Thank you to Nixa boy’s coach, Jay Osbourne, Parkview girl’s coach, Keri Nichols, and longtime high school and college coach, Kent Thomas. Excellent points on both sides were presented, only time will tell if it ever actually happens.
We continued our series on the weirdest mascots in America – Ryan Schaffitzel was in studio and brought some very interesting minor league baseball mascots (Trash Pandas, really?!) and some college summer baseball mascots. We also continued to explore a few more of the mascots across the country (Ducks, Shockers, Mountaineers, War Eagles, Dirtbags, etc). Don’t miss this one!

Holiday tournaments are in full swing, and we updated the brackets and then caught up with Springfield Public School Director of Athletics Josh Scott. He has been involved at the national level of athletic directing and we talk about that along with running premier tournaments.
We then had the pleasure of being educated! Nebraska State Champion and top 1% ranked eSports player Allie Burnett joined us as we explored why eSports is the fastest growing sport in the country and world. She educated us on the attraction and addiction of eSports and why viewers cannot get enough! My thanks to Logan Weber, our producer for the night, as he chimed in on the power of gaming and its therapeutic abilities. Allie’s specialty is Overwatch and she is the only female on her team and captain as a sophomore! She is a shot-caller, again, she educated us! You don’t want to miss this! She paralleled the fundamentals and strategies of gaming to other sports and sold us on eSports and the benefits of gaming.
Christmas, New Year’s, Greenwood Blue & Gold, Pink and White Lady Classic – it is that time of year! We dove into the most popular high school holiday tournaments in the Midwest! Greenwood’s Blue & Gold will kick off their 76th annual tournament and the Greenwood/Springfield Public Schools partnership will have their Pink and White Lady Classic. Missouri State University will host the Blue & Gold this year at JQH Arena and Hammons Student Center, while Drury University will host the Pink and White Lady Classic again at O’Reilly Family Event Center and Weiser Gymnasium. Joining us with all of the need to know information - Greenwood’s Blue and Gold Superfan Don Louzader, Greenwood/SPS’s Pink and White Lady Classic Tournament Coordinators Mike Percival and Jason Michel.

My guests showed how valuable athletic directors are as mentors, supporters and educators.

Tonight, we hosted two talented and knowledgeable coaches who have demonstrated success on and off the court, Coach Landon Cornish, Springfield (MO) Parkview Boys Basketball and Coach Caitlin Lamberth, Springfield (MO) Central Girls Basketball. They did a fantastic job answering the dilemmas, their perspective was no surprise, they are both a class act!
The next two weeks we are pre-empted due to Missouri State University and Drury University Basketball, we will be back on December 1st and we will continue our series: Ethics in Sports.
Episode 227 - This week we kicked off a new series on Ethics in Sports. We are welcoming coaching panels and giving them ethical scenarios to see how they would handle situational moral dilemmas. Our first panel this week included veteran volleyball player, coach and radio host Kelly Richardson and veteran boys’ basketball coach at Logan-Rogersville, John Schaefer. These coaches did a tremendous job analyzing and dissecting our scenarios. I would want my kids to play for either one of them!

What is the activity that is the fastest growing sport in the country among all ages? Pickleball! We welcome Richard Porter, the President of the company that produces an informative, entertaining, and beautiful resource for all things pickleball. One of the recent features included within In Pickleball Magazine profiled our other guest, Coach Karl Scholes, English teacher and pickleball coach from Gilbert, Arizona. Coach Scholes has founded a pickleball club that exploded in popularity providing relationships, a connection, and an excellent fitness opportunity. The students, school and community have embraced this newest endeavor.
On this episode, my guest co-host, Ned Reynolds and I caught up with veteran National Basketball Association (NBA) star Anthony Tolliver. We discussed his career with multiple teams over the years and how he has embraced his experiences and is grateful for his opportunities. A true gentleman and genuine person, Anthony Tolliver has proven over and over how he lives as a champion every day. We look forward to his induction into the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame!
Episode 223 - On this episode, we profiled Coach Steve Shepherd from College of the Ozarks as we celebrated his upcoming induction into the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. We talked about his path as a coach, what he has learned along the way and advice for young coaches and athletes. This coach does it the right way! He coaches people, not just players and that is why he has had success AND longevity in his career.
Next week, we preview the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame induction class. We are celebrating multiple athletic successes this month!
Episode 221 - On this episode, we caught up with professional baseball veteran Jason Hart. We discussed his path throughout his career and how his real home run is being with his family. Through an incredible career in baseball, he has expressed gratitude for the lessons it gave him, the fun he had with his teams, and the secrets to the longevity of his career. He gave us guidance on hitting a baseball, but I feel like they also parallel life. “One, be ready for every pitch. Two, control your head. Three, swing to do damage.” Think about that. Be prepared, stay focused and be confident in your actions. Thank you to Jason Hart and one of my favorite co-hosts as Jason’s former college coach joined us, Missouri State University’s Head Baseball Bear, Coach Keith Guttin. I always enjoy his perspective on coaching and how he works with his athletes.

Episode 220 - On this episode, Ned Reynolds and Art Hains joined me for a special show as we paid tribute to local sports figure, and my dad, Dr. Tommy Burnett. We started during Sports Talk with Art and crossed over to A Coach’s Perspective, thank you to Art for the additional airtime. We listened to stories, in his own voice, about his time in Smackover, Arkansas, playing football for the University of Arkansas Razorbacks, winning a national championship and his time with the Super Bowl III Champion New York Jets. I want to give a heartfelt thank you to Logan Weber, my producer, and to my co-hosts Ned Reynolds and Art Hains. These gentlemen filled my heart with joy and gratitude as we reminisced and celebrated the life of Dr. Tommy Burnett. The impact that this multi-Hall-of-Famer had on lives is incredible, but to be honest, this show was about a daughter who loves her daddy and wanted to shout it from the airwaves. He was my champion and his legacy and love live on in our hearts.

On this episode, we caught up with our local horseshoe expert, Mark Kiser along with…Melanie Zerr (Women’s State Champion), Stanton Griggs (13-time Men’s State Champion) and Alan Francis (25-time WORLD Champion). We talked extensively about pitching horseshoes and what it takes to be successful. Is it muscle memory? Is it solid mental preparation? Is it experience? Find out by listening to this episode and hear the advice that these champions express. Their answers apply to horseshoes, other sports, and parallel successful champions in life. There is a lot to this sport, and I thank these players and their advocacy and support of horseshoe pitching.

Our guests did an excellent job answering the various topics and show why they are the new basketball head coaches at Evangel University. Coach Bert Capel will be leading the Men’s Basketball team after serving as an assistant to Coach Steve Jenkins. Coach Capel is not only familiar with the roster, the conference, the Evangel way as a coach, but as a former player, too. He will bring a wealth of knowledge and energy to the helm. Coach Preston Beverly may be new to Evangel and Springfield, Missouri but he is very enthusiastic about a talented roster and challenging schedule. He has big plans for Evangel and his energy is contagious. Both of these talented coaches are ready for action at Evangel, and we wish them the best!

In this episode, we welcome a special guest to our show, Frances Reimers, Founder and Owner of Firestarter. Frances is a personal brand expert, PR and Social Media Strategist, Radio Host, Author, Speaker and Educator. She is also the creative director and project lead, managing a team of professionals that help NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, NASCAR, and NCAA clients to expand their paid, earned, shared, and owned media opportunities.
We discussed the importance of positive branding and promotions of athletes, coaches, and programs. We then discussed the new NCAA legislation.
From NCAA.org - The board approved the areas for modernizing name, image and likeness rules for student-athletes. When approved by the NCAA membership, these rules would allow: Compensation for third-party endorsements related to athletics, without school or conference involvement. Compensation for other student-athlete opportunities, such as social media, new businesses, and personal appearances, without institutional involvement or the use of trademarks/logos. The board emphasized that at no point should a school pay student-athletes for name, image and likeness activities.
This is a HUGE game changer and we explored it with Frances Reimers as she discussed the implementation and offered some valuable guidance on building a brand for athletes and coaches, including social media dos and don’ts.

In this episode, we celebrated two Missouri Sports Hall of Fame inductions: Missouri State University Women’s Handball program and Sue Daughtery, Executive Director of APEX Volleyball, along with her daughter, Volleyball coach Caira Dortch. We discussed the importance of sports and the connection these programs have given to so many athletes over the years. My guests did a tremendous job expressing their perspectives on how each entity has helped shaped them as a person and the pride it has brought them to be a part. My thanks to them and congratulations to all of the inductees and the Wynn Award winners at the Women’s Sports Luncheon for the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Ed Passino, Senior Consultant at the National Federation for High School Sports is tasked with advocating and growing the sport of high school football. He is partnering with the National Football League and looking at a nationwide effort to grow this sport. He joins us in this episode and discussed how he will be promoting this game to continue to increase participants. Also joining us Coach Chuck Hepola from Evangel University, who is a coach well known in this area for doing things the right way in his program. We explored his perspective on growing the game of football at the collegiate level.

With every profession we need resources and support as we grow and develop. To achieve longevity, it takes support from mentors and colleagues. The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association has launched a new support initiative for female coaches called 28.5 and tonight we explore how coaches, male and female, can support each other and encourage professional endurance. We speak with founder of 28.5 Cori Elms (current MBCA Class 2 State Champion and Coach of the Year) from East Buchanan and discuss the mission and logistics of this new program.

We got to know Aminu off the court, too, and how important it is that he stay focused on his academics and athletics. Victory Naboya – we spoke to Victory about his experience with recruitment (he should make a decision soon) and what it is like to be an international student. He speaks about his determination to get a degree and continue playing basketball. Shawn Harmon – we caught a glimpse of what life is like being the guardian of Aminu Mohammed and Victory Naboya and how important it is to him that they become strong and confident young men and focus on their academics and character before athletics.

Birthday girl Jo Belle Hopper co-hosted tonight as we caught up with former Missouri State University coaches, Randy Ball (football) and Barry Hinson (men’s basketball). We talked about using academic advisors as a support to coaches and how Coach Ball is enjoying his role with the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs and Coach Hinson is loving his new post as an analyst with Oklahoma State University. Both of these coaches have made a tremendous impact on student-athletes at all of their stops. We picked their brain on how to coach a total athlete. Great interviews! In this episode we gave some Fastbreak Updates as we recapped fall high school sports in the area. We can all recall fond memories in one way or another of having roles in high school sports. Taylor Kauffman joined us as we recapped what was happening in volleyball, football, soccer, softball, cross country, girl’s golf, girl’s tennis and boy’s swimming and diving. In this episode we posed another challenge for our Hall of Fame broadcast duo, Ned Reynolds and Art Hains. This is their fourth, and I am confident to say, their most difficult challenge to date! Our first challenge was play by play of a sushi chef at Nakato Steakhouse (Springfield’s First and Finest Japanese Steakhouse). They did a great job with this, so we then challenged them to play “Play by Play Charades” as they described a sport to a panel without naming the sport. That was hard, but they stepped up and fought through like champs! Our third challenge was miniature golf as we tracked a group playing at Fun Acre in Springfield, Missouri. This current challenge, well….let me just say was scary to accept.
They never know where we are going and when we pulled up to Hotel of Terror…both were apprehensive about this task. I challenged them to follow a group of young women through a haunted house and perform play by play of the scene and their reactions. After they recovered from the shocking proposal, they both accepted, and we were whisked away in a hearse to Dungeons of Doom for our adventure. This was a hard one! Please know that there is a lot of background noise, focus on their voices, but what do you expect? It’s a haunted house!
My thanks to Sterling Mathis, owner and operator of Hotel of Terror and Dungeons of Doom for allowing this half-baked idea to actually come to fruition. Also, thank you to Hailey Jo Hopkins, Mary Beth and Mia Payne for being brave enough to be our subjects of the play by play. Our hope is to continue dialogue and look to the present and future on how we can make our attitudes and views better than the day before.
We then played “out of the hat” with two veteran coaches, Jay Osbourne and Todd Mercer. In episode 186, we hosted a panel of local broadcast legends: Tom Mast, Ray Meyer, and Corey Riggs made for an exceptional team tonight as we flashbacked to our recent Sports 101 series and recapped all of our guests that made this series so fun and enjoyable to cover. My thanks to all of those guests as we wish them the best of luck in their future seasons.
We then shifted to professional sports and took a pause to recap all that has been going on for the last couple of weeks. We covered the Stanley Cup Tampa Bay National Hockey League Champions. We then went to the diamond and discussed the Major League Baseball playoffs. Then we hit the hardwood and recapped the seasons of the National Basketball Association and the Women’s National Basketball Association. After that, onto the turf to tackle the current National Football League. Whew! Did you keep up with all of that? We had a lot of fun and I appreciated my guests and their perspectives!

Episode 185: We continued our series of lesser known sports that are growing in popularity. So far, we have covered Pickleball, Horseshoe Pitching, Speed Golf, and Extreme Races, Disc Golf, Archery, Dodgeball, Trap Shooting/Shotgun Sports, Bass Fishing, eSports and Ultimate. In this episode we “switched gears” and had a tremendous time speaking about Bicycle Motocross (BMX) with multiple state champion and professional racer Austin McKan. We also spoke about Motocross and hosted multiple state champion and national champion racer Matt Hannah.
Both of our guests advocated for the growth of these sports and educated us on the thrilling competition and adrenaline rush that fuels its racers. Thank you to both of these athletes for sharing their perspective on their sports and passions!

Episode 184: We continued our series of lesser known sports that are growing in popularity. So far, we have covered Pickleball, Horseshoe Pitching, Speed Golf, and Extreme Races, Disc Golf, Archery, Dodgeball, Trap Shooting/Shotgun Sports, and Ultimate. In this episode – wow! We spoke about two very cool sports, very different in nature, but parallel with each other in the benefits they are giving our youth. Both, lifetime sports, they are growing in popularity and we were honored to cover them in our series.
We started the show on eSports, true, I thought we were going to talk about Frogger, Pac Man and Galactica, but I was way off! I am, of course, kidding. These sports have evolved tremendously, and my guest did an excellent job advocating for the benefits of this sport. Drury University eSports coach, Mike Jones, was very thorough in his overview of eSports and what they represent. This sport gives an opportunity to youth to represent their school and community and Coach Jones has done a tremendous job advocating for the sport nationwide. We then cast off to the seas! Actually, more like lakes and rivers, where bass fish live. The sport of Bass Fishing is the fastest growing youth sport in the country and there is not a stronger advocate on involving kids in the sport than J.P. Sell. He has done an inspiring job on educating and supporting this sport and it is impressive how he reaches out to all populations and encourages them to take that “cast of a lifetime”, we appreciate all he has done to support kids in our community. What? Yes! Episode 183! We continued our series of lesser known sports that are growing in popularity. So far, we have covered Pickleball, Horseshoe Pitching, Speed Golf, and Extreme Races, Disc Golf, Archery and Ultimate. We aren’t dodging any sports in this series…that’s why we started off with the intense and competitive sport of Dodgeball! This energetic sport of throwing, catching and dodging has grown in popularity throughout the country. One of the most effective and productive advocates of the game is the President of the National Dodgeball League and USA Dodgeball participant Ed Prentiss as he joined us and educated us on the basics, safety and competitions of dodgeball. We also spoke with Coach Kevin Boyer about high school Trap Shooting and college Shotgun sports. As the leader of the national championship team from Logan-Rogersville and current Drury University coach, we learned how this sport has developed and grown over the years. It has provided several youths in our area a connection and opportunity, as Coach Boyer puts it, “to be a part of something bigger than themselves”. We learned the strategy and skills needed to be successful!

Welcome to episode #182! We continued our series of lesser known sports that are growing in popularity. So far, we have covered Pickleball, Horseshoe Pitching, Speed Golf, and Extreme Races, Disc Golf, and Ultimate. We aimed for the bulls eye this week and spoke with Missouri Department of Conversation Archery expert Warren Rose about the benefits of getting this sport into schools. Springfield Public Schools (SPS) started Archery and in no time has exploded the sport to now hosting over 900 athletes! Two big reasons, besides Warren Rose’s involvement…Theresa Miller and Susan Provance. Theresa and Susan have organized and implemented the Archery program at SPS, and the popularity has grown, along with providing all students interested a connection and opportunity to be involved.
We also spoke with the Executive Director of the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA), Coach Denny Hunt about the state basketball coaches clinic that has a stellar line up this year. With over 1,000 coaches in their membership the MBCA has put together a four-day virtual clinic of multiple headlining coaches, along with panels on social justice, mentoring and a panel of MBCA Coaches of the Year.

This week we started off with the expert in Disc Golf and had Russ Burns give us all of the information you would need to start this sport and be successful at it. We then took the disc to another sport and explored Ultimate! This sport has been popular for decades and has continued to grow because of advocates like Neil Adams. Episode #180! Last week we kicked off a new series of lesser known sports that are growing in popularity. We covered Pickleball and Horseshoe Pitching. This week we started off with Horton Smith Golf Pro, Garrett Holt as he gave us the 101 information about the growing sport of Speed Golf! Combining endurance running and the finely tuned skill of golf, this combo sport has grown tremendously in popularity. Listen to learn all of the strategies and the mentality it takes to be successful.
We then discussed the extreme physical (some say crazy) events that require endurance running while completing wild and challenging obstacles. I am referring to Spartan Races, Warrior Dashes, and Tough Mudders just to name a few. Crawling through caves, jumping over fire, all another day at the office when you compete in these events. Amy Hietter joined us and helped us understand the picture of these courses along with the psychology of tackling and finishing these events.
The bonding force, socially and athletically, of both of these sports is evident and I challenge all of you to get out of your comfort zone and find your next adventure sport! Thank you to Garrett Holt and Amy Hietter for a fun hour and sharing your perspective.

In episode #179, we are kicking off a new series of lesser known sports that are growing in popularity. We started the show learning all the ins and outs of Pickleball! Who better to learn about Pickleball than our own local, professional tour player, Coach Jarrod Smith! You may know him as the highly successful tennis coach at Drury University, but the Pickleball community considers him the regional expert. He gave a “101” lesson on how to play, how to score, and where you can get started. He motivated us all to give this sport a try!
We then hosted the talented horseshoe pitcher Mark Kiser and learned about the world of pitching. We learned the basics of the game and then about the strategy and skills needed to be champions from 15-time state champion, Stan Griggs, and 24-time world champion Alan Francis. This trio of knowledge left us inspired to learn more and give pitching a try!

In episode #176, we welcomed World Team Tennis General Manager of the Springfield Lasers, Paul Nahon. We caught up on how the Lasers did during this unique season, and how spending their time together in a “bubble” that included team dinners every night, elevated their team chemistry and skills with the majority of players showing significant improvement throughout the season at Greenbrier.
We also talked about another one of his passions, sailing. Besides being the General Manager of the championship program. Springfield Lasers, he is also Commodore of the Stockton Yacht Club. We talked about his love for sailing and how he has a passion for racing. He encouraged beginners to learn and get out in the water! We discussed the two styles of sailing, for recreation, and for him, another angle (no doubt competitive) the side of racing. He is a wealth of knowledge on tennis and sailing and we thank him for spending the hour with us!

We had a lot of fun celebrating Bill Helfrect’s storied and legendary baseball career at Missouri State…and his football running back days for the Bears, too! We had a surprise guest tonight for Bill, his former college coach and now friend for life, Coach Bill Rowe. I know, right? The legendary Bill Rowe stopped by the studio to talk about Bill Helfrect’s career and what an honor it was to coach him and his teammates. We talked baseball and about what made that group so unique and special. The memories they made will be timeless and the lessons they learned have carried over into successful professional and personal lives.
Bill Helfrect will be inducted into the SASHOF on October 5, 2020 along with Larry Nemmers, Becky Oakes, Dan Lucy and Wayne Fredrick along with a new recognition, the Era of Excellence, being awarded to Parkview High Schools “Jolly Green Giants”.

In episode #174, we were once again happy to celebrate some upcoming inductees (Class of 2020) into the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame. This week we enthusiastically congratulated and celebrated with legendary broadcaster, Dan Lucy as he expressed how honored he has been to broadcast sports in the Springfield area for nearly 32 years. We also celebrated the unique and successful attributes of an era at Parkview High School that left a lasting impact on the community. The “Jolly Green Giants’ will receive the Era of Excellence Award from the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame. Representing the players was Gail Fredrick (2005 individual inductee of the SASHOF) and representing the coaching staff, Dr. Edsel Matthews (2000 SASHOF inductee; 2005 Missouri Sports Hall of Fame inductee). They gave some valuable advice and guidance to young athletes, coaches, and parents of athletes. We appreciated their insights and perspective on the value of sports and the parallel of life lessons.
They will all be inducted into the SASHOF on October 5, 2020 along with last week’s guests, Larry Nemmers, Becky Oakes, and Wayne Fredrick and next week’s guest, Bill Helfect.

In episode #173, we were happy to celebrate three upcoming inductees (Class of 2020) into the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame. We congratulated and celebrated with former National Football League referee Larry Nemmers, former coach and athletic administrator Becky Oakes, and champion golfer Wayne Fredrick. All three shared lessons they have learned from their experiences and the importance of continuing to learn and give back to the game. Their advice was spot on about how sports parallel life. My thanks to our call-in guests: Dr. Ron Snodgrass (Big 10 Football Referee), Dr. Karissa Neirhoff (Executive Director of the National Federation for High School Sports), and Tim Blasi (2019 HOF member).

In episode #172, we welcomed Coach Michael Collins, Missouri State University Men’s Basketball, who gave us an update on the new Bears, Badges, and Kids initiative and the success of their inaugural outing.
We then hosted two guests from Springfield Public Schools, Director of Athletics Josh Scott and Assistant Director of Athletics Marty Marsh. Right out of the gate we celebrated Marty’s latest achievement, earning the distinct title of Certified Master Athletic Administrator from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). Josh received his certification six years ago and continues to encourage his site administrators to pursue professional advancements and development. We celebrated all of the recent certifications in the district, also recognized: Rich Dameron, Brad Angel, and Jeremy Rios. We also discussed the valuable angle of hiring quality coaches and providing athletes and coaches with a meaningful and educational athletic experience. Thank you to all of these gentlemen for what they do in the name of educational athletics!

It’s challenge time again! We, again, challenged Ned Reynolds and Art Hains, to a Play by Play/Color Analyst escapade. Our first challenge was to have them perform play by play and color analyst work on a Hibachi chef at Nakato Japanese Steakhouse. They passed that endeavor. We then challenged them to “Play by Play” charades with a panel of judges (Don Louzader, Jeff Burnett, and Misty Ramsey). Again, they passed with flying colors. Our latest challenge for these two Hall of Famers, consisted of broadcasting the 1st Annual ACP Championship Event of miniature golf! My thanks to our host course, Fun Acre in Springfield, Missouri! Our finalists were Don Louzader (Two-time Open Champion at Fun Acre, ACP’s baseball correspondent), C.J. Ball (Drury Women’s Golf Coach), and Jeff Burnett (our Kansas City Chiefs Superfan). It was a tight race and our broadcasters filled our listeners with action-packed intensity as we moved from hole to hole. In the end, however, the bronze medal was awarded to Coach C.J. Ball, the Silver to Jeff Burnett, and the Gold….no surprise…to course champion Don Louzader! My thanks to all that made this challenge an enjoyable event. Tonight, we graciously hosted the Men’s Basketball Coach at Missouri State University (MSU), Dana Ford along with the Springfield Police Department’s Chief Paul Williams. We discussed the initiative and partnership they have formed to start the program Bears, Badges, and Kids. This program will have players from the MSU Basketball team, members of the Springfield Police Department and kids from our community, on their home courts, coming together on Saturday mornings to play pick up and talk with each other in hopes of educating and forming positive relationships. Chief Williams and Coach Ford should be commended for their efforts on taking action with their platforms and being positively engaged in our community. My thanks for their compassion, caring and efforts with this much needed intervention in our society. I feel it will have a tremendous impact and will hopefully ripple through the city. Thank you, also, to Community Partnership of the Ozarks and all that are involved in making this happen.
Next week, it’s challenge time again! We will once again challenge Ned Reynolds and Art Hains, if they are brave enough to accept! Rodeo on the radio! In this episode (#169), we hosted Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) Announcer Kelly Kenny. We discussed his path to the announcing arena (and it is an interesting one!) and how he landed on the PRCA circuit. In tonight's episode, we dive into the topic of youth sports and what opportunities are available this summer. On our panel, we welcomed Sam Plummer from the Boys and Girls Club and Mark Nelson from the Springfield-Greene County Parks Department. Their valuable insights gave us hope that our youth will be able to have valuable experiences this summer with the proper restrictions. We also talked about their hope of having a solid combination of positive youth parents, positive youth coaches and positive youth officials to provide an exceptional experience for our young athletes. We appreciate all they do to give kids an opportunity to be active and compete.

In tonight's episode, we profiled Human Champion Tom Mast, and celebrated his broadcasting career and impressive community involvement. Through his broadcasting, he has brought so many stories to the community and does so with professionalism, class and humor. His community events propel our citizens to be engaged in several areas, and for that, we give gratitude for his efforts and contributions. This Hall of Famer has been a mentor to many and continues to be lifelong friends with many of his broadcast partners. My thanks to Jerry Jacob, Ned Reynolds, Art Hains, Corey Riggs, and Don West for calling in and giving messages and expressions of gratitude to Tom Mast. He is a “Tom-of-all-trades” and truly cares about his community. Thank you, Tom!

During this time, we are hounded by multiple ads on TV, Radio, social media, everywhere about this and that that will help you lose weight, build muscles, go sleeveless, bring you back to the ‘glory days’….28 day this, two-week transformation that….we needed to sift through the noise and find out what we can do to figure out what is best for you. Our panel gave some seriously great suggestions and some practical advice that you can implement into your life today. In tonight's episode, we host Big 10 referee Dr. Ron Snodgrass, along with former NFL Vice President of Officiating and current director of instant replay for college football officiating Dean Blandino. Blandino is also a rules analyst for the NFL and NCAA games on FOX Sports. During this time, as we navigate through unchartered waters, we take a moment to look at what officials are going through at this time at the collegiate and professional levels. Officials are extremely busy increasing their skills through virtual training and professional development. They are continuing to train in hopes that this fall their season will be back to normal. We also spoke about replay and the logistics of how it works and how it has advanced the game. My thanks to both of these gentlemen for their valuable time and respected insights.
In this episode we welcomed Drury University Men’s Basketball Coach Steve Hesser and Evangel University’s Head Football Coach Chuck Hepola. We discussed the challenges of online recruitment and how they are handling virtual workouts with their players and how their programs are being impacted by our global situation. They gave some great advice for coaches and athletes, my thanks for their insights and valued efforts with their players and staff during this time.
In this episode, we have a ‘counseling session’ on missing the sport of baseball. Don Louzader and Nate Lucas join us as we talk about how much they are missing their favorite pastime. We validated, had guidance and a pep talk from Coach Bill Rowe, discussed controlables, and how to put in action what they control into coping mechanisms for each one. Coping mechanisms are personal and several great suggestions for channeling energy was expressed. Baseball, like other sports, will return, and we will be grateful and appreciate the value they hold in our community. In the meantime, get outside and play catch, watch a sports movie, read a sports book, host a virtual trivia night over your favorite sport, exercise, or explore an option that is intriguing to you. Don’t waste energy on trying to control something you do not. Sports will return, have faith!

In this celebration episode, we celebrate the local college basketball and wrestling seasons and tonight we focus on Drury University’s Women’s Basketball team. Coach Molly Miller celebrates her team’s success by the numbers and by the pure joy she had coaching this special group. On the court and off the court the Lady Panthers represented themselves very well. Ranked #1 throughout the season in the nation and finishing 32-0 before their season was abruptly ended (and not within their control), the team has rallied together and tried to heal through these times of adversity. As we celebrate the accolades of this team, we also catch up with their three seniors. Two time NCAA Division II National Player of the year and two time All-American Hailey Diestelkamp, Two time All-American and three time Great Lakes Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Daejah Bernard and four year star Brooke Stanfield, as each one shows gratitude toward the village of supporters they have been able to enjoy throughout their four years at Drury.
During this global situation, as we try to navigate through it as one united team, we must stay informed and educated from multiple sources on how to cope and deal with our new normal. My thanks to Infectious Disease Physician Dr. Will Sistrunk, Administrative Director of Mercy Sports Medicine Jim Raynor and Missouri State University Director of Athletics, Kyle Moats for their valued input on this global topic. How COVID-19 is affecting our sports physically, mentally, and emotionally has to be addressed and we need to generate conversation with our coaches, athletes, officials, and fans on what we need to do as united Human Champions. No matter what team you cheer for, we are in this together as one planet. It is game day. We are ready for this. When a coach calls a timeout and asks you to step up, meet the challenge and do what you need to do for our team. Stay safe and healthy and remember you are loved and valued.
As we navigate through this new world and way of living in a unique world we pause to celebrate and pick back up our Sports Family Series. We celebrate the talented Harman family from Walnut Grove and not only the accolades collected by them, but the people and citizens they have become. We thank Russ and Dawn Harman for bringing in their daughters: Hannah, Heather, and Bailey, along with the daughters of Gene and Lynn Harmon, Lexi and Haley. These five ladies would make a tremendous starting five! All of them are very proud of representing their family, school, and community. The pride of representing ignited a drive in each of these athletes that propelled them into the record books and beyond.
Tonight, we catch up with Missouri State High School Activities Association administrators and preview the upcoming Show-Me Showdowns as teams take the court and go for that coveted state basketball championship. Dr. Kerwin Urhan and Kevin Gardner join us as we take a look at the behind the scenes of putting this event together and previewing the teams coming in this weekend for Class 1, 2, and 3. Next weekend, will be the championships for Class 4 and 5, all at JQH Arena on the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. In this episode, our Human Champion Profile is legendary, local, and Hall of Fame broadcaster Dan Lucy! Dan gave us the entire hour as we explored his journey from a military kid to a Patriot at Millard South High School in Omaha, Nebraska to the University of Missouri Journalism school. We talked about his experience as a sports director in Columbia and then in 1988 making the move to Springfield, Missouri’s KOLR 10 where he has set roots down ever since. Dan discussed how his favorite sport is ‘whatever is in season’ and how he has thoroughly enjoyed coaches in this area. He also stepped away from the studio and talked with us about his battle with cancer, his relationship with the Boys and Girls Club, and what he does when he is not working diligently to cover our local, state, and national sports.
Celebrating Champions is the focus of this episode as we congratulate two champions from Missouri State University, Women’s Swimming and Diving won the Missouri Valley Conference Championship and the Missouri State University Handball Team won all three divisions (Men’s, Women’s, and Combined) at the National Collegiate Handball Championships at the University of Texas. Chelsea Dirks-Ham, Associate Head Coach of the MSU’s Women’s Swimming and Diving Team, recapped the swim teams 4th consecutive Conference Championship and its 12th in the past 13 years. We then caught up with Dr. Tommy Burnett, coach of Missouri State Handball, along with assistant coach, Sam Esser, and players Christina Peacaut (All-American), Meghan Mudd, Jack Morris, and Denny Schmidt. The handball team won its 16th women’s title, 10th men’s title, and 15th overall combined title.
In this episode, we kick off the show with a FastBreak Update and look at two nationally ranked Drury wrestlers: (#6) Jared Rennick and (#8) Peter Kuster were here, along with their coach James Reynolds in his fourth season at Drury. Best of luck to all of the Drury Wrestlers as they get ready for Regionals.
We were then joined by former Olympians Christian and Teri Cantwell, and their son, Jackson. During our discussion we looked into their journey at the Olympics and with sports and how they are now integrating those valued characteristics into their parenting. Using sports as part of their family culture, the Cantwell’s have developed a strong bond in an out of the shot-put ring. Their experience at the national and world levels have prepared them for success in life. Now they enjoy and embrace the path that Jackson is traveling as he soars to the top of the charts in his own right winning the National Championship in the shot put in his age division!
In this episode, we continue our series on Sports Family’s and showcase a local family that epitomizes the theory of implementing a sports culture into their family dynamics to create successful athletes and people for generations. Hall of Fame athletes Scott and Tracy Opfer have five children that have had stellar high school careers and showcase college careers and, in turn, are now successful professionals that positively contribute to society every day. Lorin, Austin, Alix, Kasey and Kinjo have set this family apart through their accolades and accomplishments, but the family’s real source of pride is their character and how they represent themselves in the community. My thanks for this family’s willingness to share with us their philosophy on success on and off the field!
In tonight’s episode, we profile legendary Hall of Fame, seven-time NCAA national championship gymnastics coach Valorie Kondos Field. Miss Val, as she is widely known, discussed her philosophy and motivation to develop life champions through the sport of gymnastics. She discusses her relationship with John Wooden and her Ted Talk, that has been widely viewed over 1.2 million times, and emphasizes how success does not always include winning. She also talks about her book, “Life is Short, Don’t Wait to Dance” and how she approaches coaching and life with no regrets. We also discuss the difficult experience of having a player confide to her that she was sexually assaulted by Team USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. After reported, two more players and her assistant coach came forward as victims, too. We discussed what she did to help them heal and process this horrific situation. My thanks to this Human Champion and how she has positively impacted hundreds of athletes throughout her career.
In the first of our series on Sports Families, we gather with the Garrison Family: Marty, Susie, Carie, Corey, Callie, Casey, Coday, and Conley. We explored how sports, in particular with this family basketball, has been an integral part of their family dynamics. The way that they support each other, and the way they compete with each other, has developed a lasting bond of appreciation, respect and loyalty. The generational success in this family has been noted by the multiple accolades, but they all agree that their family is their favorite team.

In this episode, we preview the number one attended high school basketball tournament in the country, the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions! This weekend, at the former JQH Arena on the campus of Missouri State University, Springfield Public Schools Athletic Director Josh Scott and Assistant Athletic Director Marty Marsh will host the 36th Annual Bass Pro Tournament of Champions (TOC). We previewed and evaluated the teams, bracket, and events going along with this weekend’s tournament. Josh Scott and Marty Marsh gave us the “stats” of the tournament and previewed the incoming teams, along with local teams Greenwood Laboratory School and Kickapoo High School. We also caught up with Kickapoo coach, Mitch McHenry, and three of his players Anton Brookshire, Elijah Bridgers, and Micah McIntire about the tournament and their season. We also spoke with Greenwood players Aminu Mohammed, Grant Harper, and Tommy Pinegar about what they hope their team will gain from playing in the TOC. In this episode we welcome back our officials’ panel! The stripes were in the studio! My guests included Southwest Missouri Coordinator of Officials Kelly Holt, and officials Mike Denbow, Jeff Grevillus, and Matthew Holt. The panel did an excellent job of expressing the mentality of an official and answering our listener and coaches’ questions. Each one had a unique perspective and shared those point of views with us.

We ring in the New Year with another challenge for our legendary duo, Art Hains and Ned Reynolds. These two broadcast gurus decided to accept another test from Coach Hopkins. We met at Ebbett’s Field (thank you – such a great place to eat and catch up on the latest sports scene) and, this time, had a panel of judges/studio audience. We hosted our St. Louis Cardinals correspondent, Don Louzader who did a terrific job and is always a welcome guest on the show. We also had one of my former assistants and current school principal Misty Ramsey join us for the first-and after her performance definitely not her last-appearance! We also hosted my younger brother, and Kansas City Chiefs Superfan, Jeff Burnett-one of my favorites to have on the airwaves.
The challenge was to play, what I now like to call, Play by Play Charades. I showed a one-minute video clip to Ned and Art of a lesser known sport – but still nationally or globally recognized –and, without saying what sport it is, they painted the picture so that the panel could guess. The panel had dry erase boards and after one minute, they wrote down what sport they felt like Ned and Art described. We went through 14 sports! It was fun, some they knew and some, well, I had to have some that “stumped the chumps”. Jeff was the winner with seven correct and we had a great time playing (cue dramatic music in your mind)…Play by Play Charades! Listen to the show and give it a try, see how many you get!

In this episode, we visit with Hall of Famer Coach Bob Kinloch about his career and the impact that he has had on multiple athletes throughout his decades of coaching at Central High School. We also previewed the Kinloch Wrestling Tournament coming up on January 3-4, 2020 at Parkview High School. We also caught up with Greenwood Girls Basketball Coach Mike Percival about the holiday basketball tournaments going on this year between Christmas and New Year’s including the Greenwood Blue and Gold and the Greenwood/Springfield Public Schools Pink and White Lady Classic among others in the area.
In this episode, we enjoy a “Thanksgiving dinner with Ned Reynolds and Art Hains” at Springfield’s first and finest Japanese Steakhouse, Nakato. We reflect on the gratitude, professionally and personally, that Ned and Art have and how sports broadcasting has changed and evolved over the years. We also gave these two legends a challenge – they performed play by play and color analyst work of our Hibachi Chef at Nakato! They did an excellent job and give a whole new meaning to, “And he goes for the butter AGAIN!” My thanks to these two gentlemen, they have been wonderful mentors and friends.
In this episode, we hosted former Olympian, Lori Endicott–Vandersnick and Head women’s volleyball coach from Southwest Baptist University Caira Dortch. We looked into the mission of in season and out of season sports and how both high school coaches and off-season coaches need to communicate and bridge that gap with a centered focus on the athlete and their development. We also explored the value of multi-sport athletes and how beneficial it is for athletes to have experience in more than one sport if they choose to do so. As a former Olympian, and as a head volleyball coach at the collegiate level, my guests made excellent points in trying to provide the best experience for student athletes.
