Episode 163 – Chicago Marathon Race Recap
Dave takes a backseat in this episode as Pete recaps his Chicago Marathon in the finale of FMC Runs Chicago.
It wasn’t a smooth road as Pete had to overcome some last-minute adversity. In Pete’s words, you don’t usually get the race you want but you get the race you need. Pete needed a test of his toughness. He got it. He crossed the finish line and the story to get there is full of memories he will never forget!
There was a winner in this episode for a free signed copy of Ryan Holiday’s Discipline is Destiny. Pete is giving away two more copies and all you need to do to enter the drawing is to send him a note and include something you are working on or a goal. Congrats to the first winner, Mary Beth!

Episode 142 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 14

Then Pete and Dave somehow slip into a walk down baseball’s memory lane. They enjoyed it. Will you?
Then the bulk of the rest of the show is the normal update from the guys. How’s training? Food? Alcohol? Are there enough question marks in these show notes? Yep, so let’s just on with it.

Did you miss Pete and Dave? No? Whatever, they are back anyway!
Why did the guys not record last week? What’s the double update?
Before you get started, the guys had to slap an “E” on this one because Pete throws a couple of f-bombs. It happens. He apologizes for it upfront, so hopefully, that helps.
Dave lets us in on what's good and bad, as well as the start of his training plan from Team in Training. Pete gives a ton of insights into what has him confronting more demons. Race recap, weight loss talk, healthcare system woes, the pitfalls of navigating mental health, and much more. Lots going on, so on with the show!

Episode 138 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 10
Another week and another attempt to clarify statements. Hey, it’s a podcast and if there are comments, people are listening, and Pete and Dave will take that all day!
The episode has a lot of tangents. Maybe some fitness talk. A little about food. Pete has a lot to say about his mental health, body image, and how running doesn’t always help.
Dave lets us in more on how his fitness is coming along and about his training/race strategy. Both of the guys are definitely moving forward. That’s a positive!

Episode 137 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 9
Pete and Dave are back with another week of health, fitness, and dietary chatter!
The episode kicks off with Dave filling us in on a decent week, even if today is only a C+ for him. The TNT training plan for Chicago is only a few weeks away from starting. With 28 weeks until the race, how is Dave doing?
Pete recaps his training week, including some weather challenges. How does he get out there when the weather is not great? How is the time in Omaha? To no one’s surprise, Pete and Gretchen are eating their way through that underrated town.
Finally, the guys talk about some feedback they got from Susan. Her take on diet and exercise prompts a really good discussion to end the show.

Episode 136 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 8
Who was it that wanted longer episodes? Be careful what you wish for!
Pete and Dave dig into the last week with a full review after Pete reminisces about McRunner and Dave recaps his weekend at a meet with his son and wife.
Then there is a lot of training talk. A lot. Some common ground. And at the end, we find one of Pete’s buttons.
In between, they do discuss some more on nutrition spurred by last week’s episode. The guys both appreciate the honest and open talk and can’t wait for more of it.
As a reminder, there are still two slots left for a $300 donation to your charity if you decide to join FMC at the 2022 Chicago Marathon. With 29 weeks until the race, there is plenty of time to train and make an impact!

Episode 135 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 7
How’s the week been for Pete and Dave? Did Dave ever get his labs back? Are they still building that base in training?
All of those questions, and much more, get addressed in this big 1:30+ episode. The guys start out with a little track and field indoor national championship discussion. Spoiler – Braedon kicked some butt out there!
Dave gives us those results and an overall health update. Then Pete dominates the bulk of the episode with some diabetes and injury talk. Who knows how many times the guys either misspoke or made questionable blanket statements? But, as always, they have a great discussion and both feel much better afterward.

Episode 134 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 6
Pete and Dave are back with another update with 31 weeks to go until they line up at the start of the 2022 Chicago Marathon.
Pete kicks it off with an update on a challenging week. Did he overcome the challenges to get his runs in? How was his nutrition? Overall health? You know he has plenty to fill you in on.
Dave then tells us all about his tale of two weeks. What went right and what went wrong? The biggest story is really Dave’s return to the doctor after a few years. He’s hoping that telling the full story helps just one other person realize it is time to check on their health.

Episode 133 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 5
Pete seems off at the beginning and then seems to talk a ton. Dave gives us insight into his week and overall outlook from now until the race. Pete may be a bit confrontational. Dave takes it in stride. In other words, about what you’d expect.
RunningWarriorSarah is the first to answer the challenge and signed up for the Chicago Marathon while raising money for the American Brain Tumor Association. Check out her Instagram, podcast, and her charity link!
The guys seem to have a track and a plan. Will they stick to it? Is Pete too hard on Dave in this episode? What questions do you have for the guys? Let them know!

Episode 132 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 4
Pete and Dave start off with updates on their health journeys with alcohol and food. Pete gives a detailed update on his bloodwork and Dave shares that he is going to a doc for the first time in a couple of years. They also talk about how the alcohol relationship talk is important to others listening, too.
They then turn their attention to the upcoming race season. A little training talk along with some specifics starting to come out about Chicago. Are they planning to run together? Do they have specific goals? How has their outlook evolved? Lots to unpack here.
Then a typical Pete moment happens. He invites others to join them running Chicago in 2022. To do that, you’d need a charity entry. Pete offers a $300 donation to the first three that take them up on the challenge. Will anyone answer the call? Will Gretchen rescind the offer? Find out in the coming weeks!

Episode 131 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 3
Pete and Dave had one more listener question to address and they spend ample time on it in this episode. The question came from Penny and was about food/ways of eating that the guys have tried. Well, as you can imagine, they’ve tried a lot, have a ton to say on the subject, and have been concerned about food for many years. Buckle in because it’s over an hour and twenty minutes of FMC talk.
While Pete and Dave have tried different approaches to weight loss and health, they agree on a lot. In the end, they both agree that you need to find what works for you. They also agree that health needs to be the goal and that maintaining is much tougher than losing. Be true to you and find what works. They would also love to hear your stories, so reach out!

Episode 130 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 2
Pete and Dave are back at it. This is another episode that is part podcast/part therapy session. It is important that the guys work through these issues (food, alcohol, mental blocks) to conquer the marathon. They are sure more light-hearted laughs are coming, but this is another more serious discussion.
Dave opens up and explains more about how alcohol impacts him and why. Pete does the same while talking about a book recommended from a listener about alcohol control. (The book is called This Naked Mind.)
They also answer some listener questions, talk about their time at Bradley now that Pete’s son has accepted to go there, and a whole lot more. Keep those questions and subjects coming in!

Episode 129 – FMC Runs Chicago: Chapter 1
It’s time for Gretchen to (finally) get a break from Pete. And for us all to pray for Dave.
This special “season” of the FatMan Chronicles features Pete and Dave – Two middle-aged dads on a journey to conquer the Chicago Marathon. This first chapter is really an overview of their lives and what’s coming up. There’s a more serious tone to the show this time out as both guys open up about their struggles.
They are gearing up to train to run the 2022 Chicago Marathon. How will they get there? What’s the plan? How will they balance everything else in life? That’s what this series will be all about.
There is a bit of an audio issue in this episode as Pete learns some new technology to record remotely. Bear with him as he figures it all out.
Don’t forget to take a look at Dave’s fundraising page and give a few bucks if you can.

Episode 128 – Is This the End?
Pete and Gretchen are back but for how long? Is it the end of the podcast? What’s happened over the last six months?
The couple starts the show with a dedication to three friends they have lost – Linda (OG Patron and Gretchen’s #viewfromthecouch partner in crime); Steven (a friend of Pete’s from his days at Hub Group); and John (a good friend of Pete’s for the last 30 years). These losses, plus Gretchen losing her beloved cat, Angel, have made for a tough holiday season.
Even with all of that, Pete and Gretchen power through the show with their signature banter, moments of laughter, and plenty of complaints. Listen in to find out the fate of the show.

Episode 127 – Badger Trail Races 2021 “Event” in Preview
Gretchen is still MIA. OK, she’s out of town on business. We still don’t get her priorities. People need #viewsfromthecouch. Oh, well, maybe next time.
Instead, Pete invites Rob Bozovich back to do a race event in preview. Pete goes back to the Badger Trail in Wisconsin to take on the 50K. Put on by Ten Junk Miles Racing, this is an incredible event.
This year Pete will walk it. The goals – enjoy the day, encourage some people, maybe cross a finish line. Truly no expectations for this one. It should make for an interesting recap soon!

Episode 125 – On Location with Rob and Heather!
For the first time ever, Pete and Gretchen talk to guests live on location. They welcome Rob and Heather Bozovich back to the show. That’s two couples for the price of, well, nothing!
SOUND WARNING: This was recorded in a kitchen in the new Bozovich home with only three mics. The quality is ok but not up to our normal standards. Be kind. And remember the show is free 😊.
They recap their trip to PA while catching up with the Bozovich’s. #Viewsfromthecouch is a bit different but just as special as always.
Pete and Gretchen also give you an update on their health journey, specifically with Omada. Pete whines a lot – fair warning!

Episode 124 – Better Late Than Never?
There is a reason Pete and Gretchen didn’t record last Sunday (Father’s Day). Really. At least that’s the story they are sticking to.
A long #viewsfromthecouch. Gretchen fans will be thrilled.
A health update that shouldn’t be a surprise. Struggles. But a plan?
Pete gives a huge #50at50 update. He nearly reads the entire list before catching himself. He needs to pick some highlights going forward so you don’t fall asleep. Or maybe that’s how you use this podcast and this is perfect.
Finally, Pete talks about calling an Audible from podcasts. Pun-tastic!

Episode 123 – Oh Look, Podcast Equipment
It has been over four months since you’ve heard from Pete and Gretchen. While the break for them was necessary, and the relief for you was likely profound, the couple is back (for now) and ready to share what’s been happening.
We all know that people missed Gretchen, so after a bit of an introduction, she jumps right into four months’ worth of #viewsfromthecouch. And wait until you hear the shows they have been walking together!
Gretchen and Pete both give some health updates. How are they feeling? How are they doing? Is Pete still a hot mess? (You already know this answer.)
Pete promises a bigger #50at50 update soon. In the meantime, there is an update to the list and it’s a fun one.

Episode 122 – #50at50: Part II
This episode kicks off with Gretchen questioning her #viewsfromthecouch. Are changes coming? We are all on the edge of our seats.
In better news, Gretchen continues to use Mirror. She is doing cardio, strength, and core. Finally, something she likes and is going to stick with.
Pete gives an update on his health, including the return of severe migraines. The doc has a plan, and he is hopeful it works.
The bulk of the episode is the rest of Pete’s #50at50 list. What is on it? What’s missing? Let him know your thoughts.
Pete kicks off the list with his 50K walk on Friday, 1/29. Send him a note to cheer him on. Or give him grief. All of it is good with us!
If you want to see the list, send Pete or Gretchen a note.

Episode 121 – #50at50: Part 1
Pete is turning 50 soon, and this episode starts to unveil his #50at50 list. But before we can get into that…
Gretchen gives her #viewsfromthecouch and an update on her Mirror workouts. She continues to enjoy it and has plans for the future.
Next, the couple talks about this article from Yahoo News talking about fitness trainer, Drew Manning, gaining over 60 pounds to relate better to his overweight clients. Dude. Seriously? Pete and Gretchen, as well as some listeners, had some thoughts.
Finally, Pete starts to reveal his #50at50 list. He talks about the motivation for the project as well as how he intends to look at the goals. He'll reveal more from the list on the next episode. Want to follow along or have ideas? Reach out or comment on social media!

Episode 120 – 2020 Year in Review & 2021 One Words
2020 has been a year. Pete and Gretchen talk about the good, the bad, the ugly, and the downright absurd in this episode.
But first… Gretchen gives a special #viewsfromthecouch about The Crown on Netflix. That segment lasts awhile because Pete has questions. The royals are an entertaining bunch.
Next up is a Mirror update from Gretchen. She says she likes it. Yes, LIKES IT.
Pete updates on his fitness and talks about how gaining weight needs to stop. This will be a 2021 focus. Will it stick?
After lots of 2020 chat, the couple reveals their one-word choices for 2021. Gretchen goes with #committment. Pete goes with #soul. Hopefully, Disney doesn’t sue him.
Pete and Gretchen also focused their 2020 giving on a couple of charities. They don’t talk about this much, but they are committed to giving back when they can. One charity is the Sunbow Foundation. The other is Blessings in a Backpack. Both are amazing organizations making big impacts on the world. If you are looking to support a great charity, check them out.

Gretchen’s back! She leads off by telling us why there may be no One Word for 2021 before launching into her patented #viewsfromthecouch.

Episode 118 – Catching Up with Rob
Gretchen needs a bit more time off, so Pete goes solo in this episode. Fear not, it is not just Pete giving a 45-minute stream of consciousness soliloquy because he is joined by our very good friend, Rob Bozovich.
Last time Rob visited, we learned some about his affinity for indoor cycling with Zwift. Pete asks Rob a lot more about Zwift and the two delve into the details. If you want to learn more about Zwift, or just pick Rob’s brain, hit him up or contact Pete for an introduction.
Pete also talks to Rob about his overall health during the pandemic. As usual, Rob is candid while giving the full picture of what’s been happening. It is always fun to hear what Rob has to offer!

Episode 117 – We’ll Go Ahead and Apologize Up Front
Are you ready for Pete and Gretchen unleashed? Not enough for rated R, but it gets close. Listener beware.
The couple jumps right into Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch. She talks about a Real Housewife that is dealing with addiction. Pete actually jumps in here to give his perspective. This is the most important part of this episode, and it’s all downhill from here.
Gretchen seems thrilled that Pete will watch the Bradshaw Bunch. Well, maybe not, but he insisted. This is one funny show if you haven’t seen it.
Gretchen updates on her health and how she is trying to consistently walk three days per week. This is where Pete starts jumping in and they recount the many bad meals over the last week. This is all in the context of how the pandemic continues to impact life. They apologize now if you can never look at an egg roll the same again.
Pete’s #viewsfromtheblackboard is not even safe this week. Hopefully, you find this as funny as your hosts. If you never want to admit that you listen to FMC again, they get it.

Episode 116 – Let’s Just Get This All Out There
Pete and Gretchen have some things to say about how COVID is impacting their lives, especially with school. They are clear that this is not political. They are not bashing teachers. They are sharing the impact and their views. They normally steer clear of this stuff. And probably will in the future. Maybe. Maybe not. It’s their show 😊.
Then the normal show kicks in. We hear Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch. She gives an update on her walking and nutritionist. If her nutritionist listens, apologies in advance.
Pete talks about how inconsistent he’s been and what is coming next. The bottom line is that these two need to get on the same page. Will it happen? Share your thoughts.
Finally, the couple gives an update on Pete’s quest for the perfect straw while getting fully in PG-13 territory. We think he stops short of rated R. They also talk about their quest to find the perfect showerhead. Oddly, they try to give one away. Seriously. This may be overboard. But, it is pure FMC!

Episode 115 – Tripping and Frozen Green Beans
Pete and Gretchen are back, and they have some updates. Gretchen starts right off with a full health update. How are things with walking? With the nutritionist? We want to know!
Then it is time for #viewsfromthecouch. Is Gretchen really tiring of reality TV? This could spell doom for the podcast. OK, not really, but still.
Pete offers up an update on how he is doing after his emotional episode. Spoiler – still not great, but there are definitely glimpses now of who you’ve come to know.
Pete rails on AT&T and the awful mobile communication industry. Yes, there is a story here.
Finally, the couple discusses straws. Yes, straws. And they welcome your thoughts on this important matter.

Episode 114 – A Peek Into Mental Health
After a long two-and-a-half weeks, Pete and Gretchen are back. The episode starts as normal with Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch and Pete’s #podcastcorner. There is some of their usual humor, but most of this episode is serious.
Pete and Gretchen offer a peek into why they did not record. Pete’s struggle with depression was coupled with severe anxiety. Then guilt started. The cycle was vicious, and Pete just couldn’t find the mental strength to break out of it.
This was a very difficult episode to record. It may not have happened had the couple not received a note from a listener telling them, especially Gretchen, what a difference the podcast made in their family’s lives. If Pete sharing his struggles connects with only one other person, it was worth the extreme vulnerability. They both want to thank all of you for the amazing support. They will continue to work tirelessly to #defeatthestigma.

Episode 113 – I Feel Like We’ve Been Here Before
Another early morning recording but this time it’s #blameGretchen. This episode is mostly about her anyway.
Gretchen starts with her #viewsfromthecouch and has a shocking revelation. What will everyone think? Next, she tells us all about her first week of a new nutrition plan with her registered dietician, Nicole. This is very different from what’s she’s been doing. Find out how it’s going.
Pete updates us on how he’s faring with a brief overview of his health and running. He also brings up his #50at50 project. He’ll have a preliminary list to share in an upcoming episode. In the meantime, keep the suggestions coming!

Episode 112 – Strike First. Strike Hard. No Mercy.
Pete and Gretchen recorded this on the morning of release because, well, you’ll see. #BlamePete
Pete changes it up by hitting #talesfromtheblackboard first. The remote learning challenges are real. However, they are making the best of it. He also throws in his #podcastcorner early with a brand-new offering from History and C13 called, “It Was Said.” Pete is really looking forward to this one.
After that, Gretchen chimes in with her #viewsfromthecouch. Again, no reality shows. This time she is all-in on the Cobra Kai on Netflix. As children of the 80s, they both love this show.
Gretchen gives an update on her walking goals and nutritionist. Although Annie is booked, she was able to get time with her podcast partner, Nicole, and has her first meeting today. She’ll update us next episode. If you are interested in learning more, go to Ornery Mule Racing.
Don’t forget to send your suggestions for Pete’s #50at50 project. So far, he’s only turned down running nude because no one – NO ONE – needs that!

Episode 111 – Time to Come Clean
After determining Gretchen’s knowledge of any music outside of Bon Jovi and 90s Pop is nil, the episode dives right into #viewsfromthecouch. This week is a bit different with Gretchen talking about The World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji. Pete was watching it when Gretchen got into it and they watched it together. There are a ton of spoilers in this one, so beware!
Gretchen gives a health update on her knee. Then makes a commitment to get moving. Will it happen? We’ll find out soon.
Pete then comes clean about his weight gain and his struggles. Depression, weight gain, and getting near rock-bottom, it’s been a tough stretch for Pete. He feels like he is breaking out of it. If not, what will he do? We have confidence he is going to fix it and get his health back.
Finally, Pete’s Podcast Corner recommends a true-crime podcast called The Orange Tree. This one can get graphic and intense, so be warned. It is extremely well-done.
Don’t forget to send you suggestions for Pete’s #50at50 project. So far, he’s only turned down running nude because no one – NO ONE – needs that!

Episode 110 – Is Pete Smarter Than a Kindergartner?
Gretchen is back and so is an extended #viewsfromthecouch. She isn’t happy about what happened to Hannah on Below Deck: Mediterranean. Is she justified? You’ll get about 20 minutes of a story to find out. Pete actually saw this episode and chimes in. Then he makes a guarantee you won’t want to miss.
Pete then gives you his pick in his #podcastcorner by urging you to check out Elizabeth Carr’s The 1st. Great stories and a fascinating insight into the world of infertility. Seriously, it is very interesting.
The rest of the episode is really about Pete’s experiences over the first couple of days of in-home, online kindergarten. What has he learned? Is he able to keep up? Sometimes funny, sometimes serious, Pete’s take on in-home schooling is definitely what you expect from him and more.

Don’t forget to send you suggestions for Pete’s #50at50 project. So far, he’s only turned down running nude because no one – NO ONE – needs that!
Now, get out there and #bebettertoday!

Episode 109 – The Return of Rob Bozovich
Gretchen is traveling to be with her mom, so Pete asked Rob Bozovich to join the show. The guys fill in their own #viewsfromthecouch. Although they talk about reality shows, they are a bit different than Gretchen’s.
The bulk of the episode is about catching up with Rob. What’s he been up to for the last year? How’s he handling quarantine? What adventures does he have planned? All that and more in this packed episode!
Don’t forget to send you suggestions for Pete’s #50at50 project. So far he’s only turned down running nude because no one – NO ONE – needs that!

Episode 108 – Not Badger Trail Races
Pete and Gretchen are outside for this special episode of the FatMan Chronicles. They start out with a lengthy #viewsfromthecouch from Gretchen. But Pete chimes in about a couple of shows. The biggest part is the controversy in the American Ninja Warrior community with the arrest of the sport’s biggest star, Drew Drechsel.
After that bit of ugliness, the couple regales you with stories about their trip to Wisconsin. This was supposed to be the weekend of the Badger Trail Races. They were canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. Yet, Pete and Gretchen made the most of it.
Pete didn’t have a podcast for you this week to check out. He’ll have one next time. Also, he will return to Wisconsin for the Badger Trail Races next year. What distance will he do?
Finally, Pete brings up his 50 at 50 (#50at50) project. What do you think should be on his list? Let him know!

Episode 107 – Patience Will Be Tested
Pete and Gretchen are back from Nebraska and recording from the living room. That means Gretchen is on THE couch.
The couple starts off just talking about life. With the decision for Michaela's school to go 100% remote, will Pete’s patience hold up as a Kindergarten teacher/aide? We all know the answer, but he is going to try anyway.
Then #viewsfromthecouch returns. Gretchen has a lot to say about the 90 Day Fiancé shows and there are many.
Finally, they update us on their health. Lots of veggies after a meat-fest in Nebraska.
Pete suggests taking a listen to Guru: The Dark Side of Enlightenment in his podcast corner. True crime and a fascinating story.

Episode 106 – Live from West Point
Pete and Gretchen traveled to West Point, Nebraska to be with Gretchen’s family after the sudden passing of her aunt and Godmother. They dedicate this show to her.
A quick episode recorded from their hotel room, they catch you up on Gretchen’s lack of #viewsfromthecouch and how Pete’s running is going. They regale you with stories of food (surprise!) and a few other happenings.
Pete offers up Between 2 Pastries in his podcast corner after talking to Annie Weiss in episode 105 of the show. Definitely check it out!

Episode 104 – Peanut Butter & Griping
Gretchen is back, thankfully, but really short on #viewsfromthecouch. Her commitment to her fans is suspect at this point. She better fix it soon!
Pete shares a couple of training stories. He really does have a lot of things that happen while running. It must be him.
Pete then launches into his take on the proper use of a peanut butter jar. He may have shared this before, but he feels compelled to rail on about it again.
Finally, the couple promotes their love of Mr. Bevis dry rubs. An unpaid endorsement, but if they are listening, the ad slot is open! Go get some and let them know what you think. Make sure you tell them you heard about it on the FatMan Chronicles.

Episode 103 – Fasting, Cycling, Running and More with Amy
Gretchen takes the episode off as Pete welcomes listener, fan, and Patron, Amy Powarzynski. But don’t fret, Gretchen and her #viewsfromthecouch will be back next week.
Pete and Amy chat about her background, changes during the pandemic, and her athletic pursuits. Amy also talks about her one meal per day intermittent fasting plan. It’s always great to hear about what way of eating works for someone. A great chat and a big thank you to Amy for coming on and being a Patron!

Episode 102 – Apples and Updates
This episode starts with a strange aside about “vintage” Apple computers from Pete. The Apple chat definitely isn’t Gretchen’s choice and she tries to move him along. Was she successful?
The usual #viewsfromthecouch is next up. Pete wants to know if Linda has committed to a Views from the Couch special episode. She may need more encouragement.
Gretchen’s revelations in episode 101 were touching and lots of you reached out to lend support. She gives an update here. Pete also reveals he is going to interview a registered dietician soon for The No Fear Project and will release it as a crossover episode on FMC.
The couple also discusses their food sensitivity test results. Some surprises overall there.
From there, it is the typical update on Pete’s training and weight loss. Did he make his goal for the bet with Kevin? Did Kevin? And that’s a wrap!

Episode 101 – We Got Some Catchin’ Up To Do
Who do Pete and Gretchen think they are? They hit 100 episodes and then… crickets!
Well, they are back and have some catching up to do. Gretchen starts out the show with a reveal on some reflecting she is doing. It gets deep and emotional. But have no fear, the hilarity ensues from there.
Gretchen claims there is a way to work out in her sleep. She talks #viewsfromthecouch. Pete updates us on his training, including bird attacks, things seen on his run, and a “mean girls” moment.
Pete also reveals some bets he has made with his friend, Kevin, for weight loss. No way he wants to lose to that guy, so you know he is motivated.
The couple also talks about their experience with Mr. Bevis BBQ Rubs. These are fantastic and you should check them out. This is an unpaid endorsement but be sure to tell them you heard about it on the FatMan Chronicles podcast!
Finally, they talk about consistency in recording and releasing podcasts. They are only 101 episodes in, so now is as good a time as any to nail this down.

Episode 97 – Quaranmania II
Pete shows true professionalism to open the show. It may be the best, and worst, opening ever.
Gretchen jumps in with some outrage over Pete’s lack of confidence in her participation in a show staple. From there, it is time for a special Tiger King edition of #viewsfromthecouch.
Pete gives an update on his health. The doctor’s orders have led to a new way of eating. How will they balance NSNG and the Mediterranean Diet? There are quite a few challenges.
The couple’s daughter, Michaela, who is almost 5, decided that she wants to be a YouTube star. Check out her channel – Love Juniors – and subscribe. It is hilarious!
Pete and Gretchen then launch into a good 10+ minutes on cereal. What are your favorites? Gretchen’s are insane, and Pete’s are full of sugary goodness.
After a debate on the merits of watching movies as they come on TV versus streaming or DVD, they reminisce about shows from their childhood. All this before wrapping up with Pete’s Podcast Corner – Every Little Thing.

Episode 96 – The Quarantine Episode
Finally, Pete and Gretchen are back. After episode 95’s emotional revelations, the couple took some time to get back to on the mics. They give you the reasons and then dive right in.
While the COVID-19 virus changed the lives of many in the world, Pete and Gretchen were undergoing some changes of their own. They are in self-imposed quarantine, meaning not sick, which brings forth a few more challenges.
Gretchen gives her #viewsfromthecouch and implores the audience to encourage a podcast episode (or even a new podcast) with her friend Linda. Sound like fun? Let us know!
She then updates everyone on her health and weight loss. Lent is the catalyst for her changes. How are they going?
Pete updates you on some new health challenges, his weight loss, and dealing with a canceled race. Lots going on and we will find out what the future holds.

Episode 95 is a tough one. Pete and Gretchen are struggling with their weight. Worse, they are unsure what to do about it.
The battle is never-ending, frustrating, and deeply emotional. Just how emotional will be clear when you hear Gretchen breakdown. The couple decided not to edit this episode. It is raw and you may want to grab a tissue.
Pete’s podcast corner fits right into the subject of weight loss, nutrition, and our connection to food – Long Run 96 of Ten Junk Miles with Annie Weiss. It’s long but very interesting!

Episode 94 spoiler – Gretchen is out of town. That’s the bad news. The good news is Pete is joined by a listener and friend, David Dushkin!
Pete and Dave get into a series of deep conversations about mental health, physical health, plant-based eating, and more. Dave even takes over #viewsfromthecouch and Pete’s Podcast Corner. While the views are nowhere near Gretchen’s take, Dave’s podcast selection is excellent – Team Never Quit.
Dave’s story is compelling, inspirational, and something everyone should follow. Connect with him on his Facebook page, Making the Most of the 2nd Half. It’s worth it!

Episode 93 starts out like all the other episodes with lots of talk about TV. But Pete takes the lead in talking about some movies. There is a good dose of This Is Us, so listeners beware of the spoilers!
Pete’s Podcast Corner recommends taking a listen to The Happiness Lab. This is a podcast that Pete says he would like The No Fear Project to emulate. Listen to this one – now!
The big news this episode is Gretchen's opening up about her personal frustrations with weight loss. Normally, Pete is the one lamenting what is going on about how he feels and what is bothering him. This is a rare look inside Gretchen’s mind, and it hits home. Are you struggling with weight loss? Share your struggles and solutions with us!

Episode 92 means Pete and Gretchen are back! The first show of 2020 catches you up with where they are in their lives. Gretchen’s brief #viewsfromthecouch gives you insight into the best Housewives show to watch. That’s just podcasting gold.
Pete’s Podcast Corner recommends taking a listen to The Dream. This podcast tackles the world of MLMs and is really fascinating. (Note – This is Pete’s opinion and no sponsorship money is taken.)
The big topic discussion tackles the controversial comments made by Jillian Michaels about Lizzo. Pete and Gretchen do not hold back in their opinions of what Jillian may have right but definitely got wrong. The bottom line is no one should talk about someone else’s body or health. Pete sums it up with be kind, listen more, and judge less.
Reach out and let the couple know your opinion on this important topic. Talking about weight properly is critical in our society. Chime in!

Episode 91 is the last show of the decade! Pete and Gretchen head out of town for the new year, so they won’t be back until 2020. Let the cheering die down…
The episode opens with the usual wine, #viewsfromthecouch, and training updates. Pete reveals his sub-5 marathon plans. Watch for the #Breaking5 hashtag often!
Next is a review of 2019. How did it go? What goals were met, or not? They miss talking about 2019 One Words, but, hey, they obviously don’t prepare.
2020 plans are next up. Gretchen stumbles through a few goals first. Then Pete lays out his plans. He has some demons he continues to fight, and the talk turns serious. Gretchen listens and offers support. Pete breaks down a bit on the air. They promise authenticity and this difficult subject is no exception.
Finally, the couple reveals their 2020 One Word choices. Gretchen’s may involve a random word generator before she homes in on something. Share your One Word choices with us!

Episode 90 is a celebration of Pete and Gretchen’s 10th Anniversary! The couple talks through their ten years of marriage – just kidding, it’s the same crap as always!
Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch returns to those crazy 90-day couples. They also talk about the show “Making It” and their love of Amy and Nick.
After a quick recap of their training, almost none, Pete dives into his plans based on the Chicago Marathon lottery. There is a weird segment that deals with his complete feet-hate that is sure to win some sort of podcast award.
Pete’s Podcast Corner encourages you to listen to episode 4 of Finding Fred. It is an emotional story that everyone should know.
Finally, they talk about the new Keto 2.0 trend and some support in Pete’s camp that black pepper is spicy. Thankfully, it wraps up from there.

Episode 89 is here, and Gretchen is back! She updates you on her lack of #viewsfromthecouch and training, but lots of promises. We know she will get back on track.
Pete gives an update on his training before turning the conversation to the new Peloton ad. What do you think of it? Let them know.
Finally, the couple talks about getting completely off track. It’s bad. The good news is they can fix it. The bad news is it happened at all.
They wrap up the show with some levity because things got a bit serious for too long. Listen and share!

Episode 88 features an interview with Advanced Sommelier, new avid runner, and friend of Pete and Gretchen, Mike Matonte!
Pete goes this one solo. Gretchen will be back for episode 89 soon.
Mike’s story is so interesting. How does a guy from Florida that is a musician end up in Champaign-Urbana? Better yet, how does that move unlock a career in wine? The long journey is worth the wait!
Mike also is one of the first for Pete to coach as a runner. Mike’s progress is outstanding.
Finally, Mike is also the co-host with Pete for a new podcast – That Wine Pod. Go take a listen starting December 4th!

Episode 87 is all about that Beer & Bagel race recap.
After a bit of wine and the usual #viewsfromthecouch, Gretchen and Pete gush over This is Us and talk about their training. Spoiler alert – Gretchen still doesn’t like running.
From there, a detailed race recap really becomes a detailed trip recap about the time in Omaha. Great little city with too much good food. Weight gain. Ugh.
Pete’s Podcast Corner recommends an episode of Science Vs. A great podcast from Gimlet you should check out.

Episode 86 is a big one. Well, at least for Pete and Gretchen.
This one starts out with no wine and the usual #viewsfromthecouch. Gretchen talks about her training and Pete tells her she’s running too fast. Since she doesn’t like running, getting done is really the goal.
Pete’s Podcast Corner recommends the new podcast from the Gomers – Perfect Movie. Go subscribe!
After a long conversation about this coming weekend’s races, Pete reveals his big news – he quit his job and doesn’t have another one. On purpose.
Pete is now a certified running coach. (Contact him at pjdamico71@gmail.com if you would like to talk coaching. A more formal announcement is coming.)
He is also going all-in on The No Fear Project and other podcast endeavors. This is a big step for the family and Gretchen gets emotional. It’s a real, raw discussion between a husband and wife. This is the authentic picture and the couple wants to share as much of life as they can.

Episode 85 kicks off with Pete and Gretchen lamenting the echo in the basement once again. Does anyone really hear it besides them?
Then the real fun starts once the wine is flowing with an extended cut of #viewsfromthecouch. Gretchen talks training and what the plan is this winter. Not her plan, but her workout partner’s.
Pete fills us in on training and a bit of an injury. There is a return of Pete’s Podcast Corner. The fan outcry was so big that this will become a regular segment!
The big topic is a spoiler-ridden talk about the This Is Us storyline involving Kate and Toby. What happens when one partner loses weight and the other doesn’t? What about if they do it in secret right after having a baby? Gretchen and Pete give their insights into a very real situation.

Episode 84 sees the return of #viewsfromthecouch, including some This Is Us spoilers, so listen with caution.
Then Gretchen recaps her latest shot at a 5K PR. Pete ran too with Michaela in a stroller. Even Michaela got in the running spirit with her first official race – a 50-yard dash!
The echo the couple talks about doesn’t seem to come through in the finished product. If it sounds bad, let them know. But remember, it’s free.

In what’s become an all-too-common theme, Pete & Gretchen are back after a brief hiatus. Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch will be back soon, but the couple concentrated on training in this episode.
Gretchen has faced some physical challenges. Is her race in a week on the line? Pete hasn’t had an easy time of it either. Is he throwing out his goal?
Pete opens up about his continued battle with depression. He talks about a link between processed sugar and depression, and how it is worse for me. Processed sugar, in this case, literally acts like a drug. Not a great cycle. How will he overcome?
Finally, the couple talks about the terrible Bill Maher take on fat-shaming. No surprise neither is happy with Mr. Maher’s take, but Pete is downright angry.

After a little break, Gretchen and Pete are back! This time Pete kicks off the first segment of the show with some insight on his guest visit with the Ten Junk Miles podcast crew. That episode will be out soon, so check it out!
He also let on why it has been a minute since they recorded, and it is all on Pete. He has been quietly and secretly working on a new podcast – The No Fear Project – and was pretty much consumed with it. Now that the cat is out of the bag, FMC is back and look for regular episodes again.
Then the show really starts with Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch and a training up. Spoiler alert – Gretchen has gotten fast. How does Pete feel about that? And why is he handed out unsolicited, likely wrong coaching advice? He’s a bit jealous! But really happy for her.
Pete updates his training a bit. More importantly, his eating is off track and he vows to fix it. Now.
Finally, the couple dives into a little about a DNA diet plan and the FDA’s approval of Allulose. Interesting stuff to close out the show.

Gretchen is back for episode 80! The episode kicks off with a big #viewsfromthecouch segment to get caught up. Then we get to hear all about Gretchen’s training. With no fear of spoiling anything, she isn’t thrilled with the plan still. Coach Andy’s plan is great, she just doesn’t want to do it. But wants the results. We can all dream.
Pete catches us up on training for his 5K PR attempt. Then he brings up a controversy with the new WW (formerly known as Weight Watchers) Kurbo weight loss app aimed at kids 8 to 17 years of age. The couple discusses the obesity epidemic, the merits and dangers of the app, and what we can do to help kids get healthy.

Episode 73 is packed with entertainment! Ok, maybe not, but it’s uploaded.
Gretchen starts us out with the usual #viewsfromthecouch before updating us on her “training.” Does getting a note from Coach Andy count as starting training for the 10K?
Pete updates his training, talks about the May Reset, and even answers a couple of listener questions. Pete also plugs his upcoming 50K at the Badger Trail Races in Wisconsin. There is still time to join him. Then the couple debates Rob’s idea of running at the Biltmore. You can guess who doesn’t love that idea!
Finally, we get an update on weight loss and food choices. Both Gretchen and Pete are experiencing food fatigue. Losing weight is exhausting and it has caught up with them. What is the plan to fix it?
As always, thank you to our patrons!

Episode 72 is a little light on #viewsfromthecouch and Gretchen even breaks some crazy news about a loyal listener and patron. Could this revelation be true?
Pete updates us on his #Mayreset, including a tough week at work and how he fit in his training. His runs should really be a part of “When Animals Attack.”
Finally, the couple gets into their review of the movie Free Solo. And it is a take that only they would come up with, so don’t miss it.

Yes, journey is back, and so is Gretchen’s famous #viewsfromthecouch. This week she honors a listener request and gets deep into two shows.
The bulk of the episode is about Pete’s recent blog posts. He has puzzled through so much of what’s happening inside that he is now ready for solutions. Pete’s May Reset comes none too soon!

Gretchen’s longest #viewsfromthecouch ever is the big story of episode 70. She came prepared with notes on a ton of shows. She also gets really worked up about one of them. Pete chimes in with his usual nonsense before they reveal Gretchen’s 10K race. Not surprisingly, she wants to minimize the training effort to get there.
Pete talks about his complete lack of training and how legitimate reasons have morphed into excuses. Will he get back on track? For his sake, he better!
Tune in next time to see if Gretchen gets her way and “journey” is back.

Episode 69 is all about Gretchen and the return of #viewsfromthecouch! Or at least the first 15 minutes is, and we know people cannot wait.
Lots of surprises in this episode, including a Gretchen eye roll, Pete changing jobs, a coaching change, and some training updates. OK, not all of those are surprises, but still.
Then Pete turns the subject to his new food philosophy - #NPF. Moving on from the uber-restrictive sounding #NSNG (No Sugar No Grains), he outlines why #NPF (No Processed Food) fits better into what they are really trying to do. He also has a clunky “everyone has a different furnace” analogy to explain why things are not as simple as calories in/calories out for weight loss.
Finally, Gretchen gets on Pete about finding a 10K for her to run. She’s really looking forward to training. (We almost typed that with a straight face.)

Episode 68 features Pete having a roundtable discussion with John Harris and Rob Bozovich from the Endurance for Everyone podcast. Where’s Gretchen? Well, she decided to sit this one out. Fear not, #viewsfromthecouch will be back next episode!
Pete was listening to a Ten Junk Miles episode when he had a question: Why does it seem racing a lot is seen as a good thing, even glorified?
So, he reached out to John and Rob to talk it through. Who believes in racing often? Is there a way to run a race without racing? Do they just bicker and talk over each other? All those questions and more are answered!

Episode 67 is dedicated to Pete’s friend, Tanya Mikolajczyk. Tanya passed away this week after a short battle with colon cancer. Pete met Tanya’s husband, Mike, when they started working together at 16 years old, and Mike and Tanya were already together. 33 years of love. Rest in peace, friend.
Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch returns with notes and everything! She also commits to a timeframe for her 10K. We can’t wait to see how the training goes.
Pete talks about his return to running after the marathon and the other challenges he is doing. And the Weight Loss Challenge gets him thinking about the potential link between exercise and wanting to eat better.
They wrap up with a new review and Patron shoutouts.

A special bonus episode this week from Pete & Gretchen!
Episode 65 opens with a SPOILER ALERT of the Masked Singer in Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch. Then Pete makes a special announcement about a FatMan Chronicles 120-Day Weight Loss Challenge. Details coming soon but it starts on March 12th, so be ready!
Then the couple interviews Gretchen’s co-worker – Lou Pagotto. Lou sent us a bio and it is outstanding, so we share it here in its entirety:
“I am a product of a small town in Ontario born to immigrant Italian parents. Didn’t distinguish myself athletically while growing up as I was undersized. Played all sports in high school but did not play hockey and that made me an outlier. Life in a small Ontario town revolves around the success of its hockey team.
Played intermural athletics in college and during that period I started running short distances as I needed activity to keep some level of fitness between beer drinking.
Post college I dabbled at the 5K to 10K distance but did not go beyond until age 39 when I tried a half marathon. In the intervening 17 years I had gotten married, fathered and helped parent 3 kids and was chasing a career. I did a couple more half marathons before 2001 at which point it was time to fully commit to a marathon as the window was closing.
The marathon era lasted 6 years until late 2007 but recovery from chronic injuries were taking a mental toll. Due to high mileage I had several ‘over use’ issues and had become susceptible to calcium buildup in my heels and shoulders. Consciously I wound down the running in 2008 and took up road cycling as a substitute cardio activity.
The cycling continues to this day, and at least once a year, friends get together for a destination ride. We train indoors in the winter, then get on the road in mid April to build up endurance for the getaway week in the summer/fall. We’ve ridden in Texas, California, New York state, Iowa, France, Spain, and of course Canada. This fall we plan to conquer the Dolomites in Italy.
Over the past few years, I have experienced the loss of muscle mass that accompanies aging. With running or cycling, I had convinced myself that to get better, one had to do more mileage. It was all about improving the endurance dimension of performance. During the 18 years of running/cycling, with little cross training, my balance, flexibility, power and speed were all receding. There was nothing special about my diet either. With the concentration on cardio, I ate anything I wanted and was stuck at 184 lbs, albeit the mix had been tending to less muscle and more fat.
All my reading indicated that as you age, and once the cumulative loss of muscle mass hits a critical point, its difficult to get it back. With less muscle, your body becomes unstable and in turn you are more inclined to experience falls or unknowingly overload your joints even with normal day to day activity (why can’t I lift that luggage into the overhead compartment). These minor inconveniences accelerate the decline in your overall mobility. It was time for me to do a reset.
In June 2018 I embarked on a Keto diet program in concert with intermittent fasting (18/6). My hope with Keto/IF was to improve digestion, sleep, sharpen focus and alter body composition. As a by product maybe lose weight. In September I cut down cardio workouts from 5 days a week to 2 and added 4 days of body weight routines. Before the daily routine I start with 40 minutes of prep involving glute activation, hip/ankle mobility exercises, stretching and dynamic movement, all aimed at improving balance, flexibility and stability. In March, I will tweak the exercise routine again to focus more on leg strength/stability and less on chest/arms/back
What’s important to me now is not PB’s from a run or ride but rather longevity. How does my exercise routine and diet put me in a better position to have a great quality of life when I’m over 80. Its been said that people born today may be the first generation who can expect to live to 100. My desire is having the ability to get on the ground to play with my great grandchildren in my mid 80s without worrying about the consequences of falling or getting back up.”

Episode 63 is only about 12 days late. Not great. Could be worse.
Lots to catch up on starting with Gretchen’s latest trip and #viewsfromthecouch. Given that now her CFO and CEO might both be listening, is this segment in trouble?
Pete recaps his training. He claims he is ready to run the Newport News One City Marathon on 3/3/2019 with his good friend Rob’s support. Is he really?
That’s really about it this episode because, even with all this extra time, there was zero preparation. You expect no more.

Episode 62 is finally here!
What have Pete & Gretchen been up to over the last couple of weeks? Well, Gretchen gives an update on her #viewsfromthecouch, “training,” and a work trip where she wrangled up some new listeners. Pete updates his training, including some time on the treadmill that nearly makes Gretchen lose it with laughter. He also has a run in with the police while running. Only could happen to him!
There is also a lot of talk about how to get on track with eating. Gretchen wants to lose more weight again. Pete talks about if it is importance or willpower that drives his decisions.
There is a little serious stuff wrapped inside all that fun!

Episode 61 is all about an interview with FMC listener, Dan Seifring!
Dan lost over 100 pounds, became a half-marathoner, a full-marathoner, an Iron Man, and more! He continues to battle his weight but that does not slow him down. Dan is all about big goals and he is mowing them down whether he is at 210, 250, or 285. Inspirational and a ton of fun, we cannot thank Dan enough for coming on the show.
Also, if you are interested in the video where there is proof Dan is an IM finisher, you must check this out. Pete watched it and it may have gotten a little dusty. Amazing!
Oh, right, the show does start with the usual #viewsfromthecouch and some training updates. Really, it’s about Dan though.

Welcome to the FMC 2018 Holiday Spectacular!
Pete and Gretchen talk about Christmas, what’s been happening with their health, and the ABC show A Million Little Things. But that's not all!
From there, they get into a review of 2018. How did their “One Word” resolutions impact their life? Does Gretchen even remember hers? What will they remember about the year?
Their 2019 One Words are revealed. Or are they? Gretchen has some interesting things to say about that.
Pete has a call out for anyone with some WordPress expertise to help revamp the website. If you are interested in some swag and a hearty on-air thank you, please email him at fatmanchronicles@outlook.com.
Pete also asks for anyone willing to come to talk about their way of eating live and in-person. So, if you are a vegan, vegetarian, calories in/calories out, Paleo, keto, etc., please reach out on social media or email at fatmanchronicles@outlook.com.
And finally, if you would like a D'Amico Family holiday card, send your address and they will get it to you! Donations appreciated, but they will send regardless.

Episode 58 gets right into Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch which covers the usual Bravo shows. Pete thinks one of the shows should be off the air, so let the hate mail begin!
Pete updates his training by talking about his longest run to date – a 16-miler. It was a very good 12-mile run, but, despite bonking, he finished and has a plan going forward.
The bulk of the episode deals with an article written by Paul Kita that appeared on Runner’s World’s online edition. Pete reads the entire article before they get into why it bothers them. If you’d like to read this again for yourself, you can find My Sensible Diet Is Boring, but It May Be the Healthiest Way to Eat by clicking here. Pete and Gretchen would love to hear your take. Were they too harsh? Did you agree? Let them know!
They wrap up the episode with a discussion of what makes a popsicle. This is an important question, so feel free to weigh in.

Pete & Gretchen kick off episode 57 with no wine and a new show to talk about in the #viewsfromthecouch segment. They chat about training (Gretchen, none; Pete, getting better) and the most, and least, popular baby names of 2018. Why? Because Pete still doesn’t understand what makes good podcasting.
The rest of the show is all about an interview with Jason Todd, the race director the One City Marathon in Newport News, VA – the site of Pete’s first marathon. Jason tells us about how he got into running and race directing that eventually led to the One City Marathon. He gives a ton of information about the race, so now is the time to join in the fun! Episode 56 starts out like any other episode with some wine, #viewsfromthecouch, and training updates. Pete has a thank you message for those that reached out after episode 55. The support was overwhelming. Finally, a couple of shout outs to loyal listeners who crushed their marathon PRs in Philly. Way to go Kirsten and Kevin!
The bulk of the episode is an interview with Heather Bozovich. If her last name is familiar, it is because her husband, Rob, was an early guest on FMC and he’s the co-host of the oft-mentioned Endurance for Everyone podcast. Heather tells us a little about herself and then really lends some insight into what it is like to be the spouse while the other person is out doing crazy distance events. Communication and a true love for watching people achieve their goals on race day are just two smalls parts of the wisdom she imparts.
Heather was great and we cannot thank her enough!

Episode 55 is a mix of the usual #viewsfromthecouch, update on training, and food talk.
Gretchen and Pete do a deep dive into how they are trying to maintain their way of eating, hoping it helps someone else out there. They even commit to posting their meal plan which will be great if anyone can read Gretchen’s handwriting!
In between all of that, the mood is a bit more serious as Pete shares his struggles. He reveals a visit to a therapist and how he is trying to come to terms with the diagnosis. This was a tough thing to talk about and hopefully it helps him, and maybe someone else listening.

It’s episode 52 of the FatMan Chronicles and Pete and Gretchen are back in their normal form. Like it or not, here they are!
They start out with a very brief #viewsfromthecouch since Gretchen was out of town. Then we get to hear about her plan from Coach Andy. Spoiler Alert – She’s still not keen on running. And that becomes a discussion in itself based on another podcast. It’s interesting to dive into Gretchen’s psyche.
There is some discussion of the feedback Gretchen got on her work trip with her way of eating. It dovetailed into the feedback received after episode 51. They both want to thank everyone for their incredible support!
When it is Pete’s turn, we learn how he’s rebounded over the last week and how the training is going. He’s ready to run that race next week in Pittsburgh!
Finally, Pete announces his future plans. You’ll want to hear what’s in store next!

Episode 51 kicks off with a recap of the last two weeks, including Pete and Gretchen meeting up with Rob (Endurance for Everyone co-host) and his wife, Heather, and their little guy; followed by dinner the next night with Kevin and Hollyanne from Nebraska, who were in for the Chicago Marathon. Congrats to Rob who reached his goal by running a sub-4 marathon (3:48:xx) and all the Sub-30 Club members who finished that great race!
After Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch and recap of her training(?), Pete gets into his breakdown of good eating habits. He wrote a blog post that started to chronicle what has happened and uses the podcast to get deep into the issues and how he feels self-imposed pressure. WARNING: This content is way, way more serious than the usual banter, so be ready to shed a tear (kidding) or get angry at him (likely).
They finish off the show on a high note with a new five-star review and a couple of new patrons! Also, they promise to not be such downers next time.

It’s an epic episode 50 of the FatMan Chronicles! Be warned, this one is all about how real life happens – including Gretchen’s first race report, Jen and Boone as our first in-studio guests, and a crying toddler!
We kick it off with getting to know a little about our friends Jen and Boone, and how they have fared after converting to the NSNG way of life earlier this year. Then, I scare Michaela, so it is our first taste of a crying toddler on air! Don’t worry, she throws a little cuteness in later.
The bulk of the episode is about the 5K. Gretchen gives her first race report! How did she do? And is her running career over?
We get to hear from Boone and his first attempt to run a 5K too. Finally, Pete fills us in on his sub-30 attempt.
There is some seriousness, some laughs, and a whole lot of craziness. FMC episode 50. Wow! We can’t believe it and we thank you so very much!

Episode 49 is long and a ton of fun. After a special music quote to start the show, Pete and Gretchen jump right into #viewsfromthecouch and continue to profess their love of This is Us. (Unpaid sponsorship – ahem NBC!)
The couple then updates their Pittsburgh travel plans. Will Gretchen run the 5K? Or just dodge the question?
Then Coach Andy Aubin from Silver Fox Athletics joins FMC. They get into Andy’s background, how he lost over 120 pounds, got into running, and became the first Executive Director of the Sub-30 Club. Training philosophy and what it is like to coach someone like Gretchen makes for some good conversation. The show goes 92 minutes and it is worth every moment!

Episode 48 starts out with Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch and then continues with more discussion about her 5K training. She is working hard and won’t admit she likes it, but…
Pete talks about his training and struggles with food. It isn’t easy to maintain any lifestyle and he’s hit a bump in the road. However, there is some news on the racing front, including a 5K race in review!
The rest of the show is all about their usual shenanigans and some shout-outs to fellow podcasters and a new patron! Give it a listen, laugh, and enjoy!

It’s the FMC One Year Anniversary! To celebrate, we really concentrate on Gretchen’s training and get into how she is doing. Really, it’s almost like Pete isn’t in there for minutes on end – something to really celebrate!
But, eventually, the couple gets into what Pete is up to, including an upcoming race. The usual banter and hilarity really make up the bulk of the episode.
On a serious note, Pete and Gretchen cannot thank everyone enough for listening to any one show, much less 47 of them over the course of a year. They’ve learned a lot and appreciate everyone’s support!

Episode 46 starts out with the usual #viewsfromthecouch and a focus on Gretchen’s training. How’s it going? Will she be ready for the 5K? Does she love running yet?
After a bit of an update from Pete on his training, they get into discussion the purpose of the show. Specifically, do they have a responsibility to be inspiring? This is prompted by a couple of listener interactions and leads to some more serious discussions.

Episode 45 kicks off with a review of Gretchen’s #views training! Then we hear a bit about Pete’s struggle, including a run in with a dog and a tree. He also gives a bit of a preview of Saturday’s half-marathon.
Then the couple interviews fellow Sub-30 Club member, Derek Coulter. Online Derek goes by #txpanhandlerunner and he has a really interesting story. As a trucker, Derek has a job that isn’t conducive to a healthy lifestyle, yet he makes it work and has some great tips. FMC is thrilled Derek agreed to be interviewed!

The subject of the Grand Canyon is brought up again and there is a much bigger plan. Does Gretchen think it’s a good one?

It’s episode 41 and time for an update on Pete and Gretchen’s 2018 goals. How are they doing? Will they argue? We all know the answer to that last one.
The show follows the usual updates and gives a pretty comprehensive overview of their goals. At least what they can remember.
At the end of the episode, there is an episode of Pete’s new Be Better Today Podcast. It is the longest of all the episodes so far, so if you like that one, you’ll likely love the rest because they are mostly under 2 minutes! Pete and Gretchen make something (?) out of nothing in this special laugh-filled episode. There’s no real topic, but the couple shares plenty about what’s going on.
A new vehicle, an update on Pete’s training – including what is an excuse versus a reason to stop a bad run – and plenty of #viewsfromthecouch with pop culture references. Pete also shares why he never runs with his shirt off.
This one really is like listening in on a conversation with Pete and Gretchen, as scary as that thought really is!

Pete and Gretchen are back together and recording from the Be Better Today Studios, aka – their basement.
After a week with no Gretchen, the couple catches up on what’s been happening with her trip to Arizona, reality shows, and her quest to meet her step goal.
Pete updates us on his training, has a warning about working out in the heat, and talks about some incredible hiking he did with his son, Daniel.
The big topic of the day is stress. How does stress impact weight? Why does it happen? What happens? How do you fix it? Spoiler alert – stress can cause weight gain and it isn’t easy to change.

Well, it finally happened – Gretchen left Pete. We all saw it coming. OK, only for a five-day trip to Arizona, but still. Who wants to listen to just Pete in an episode? Answer: No One!
Instead of hearing Pete drone on, he interviews Amy Wierman. Amy is an open water swimmer and former triathlete who has accomplished a ton and inspires so many. Amy has battled weight all her life and is in the process of taking a big step to lose. Pete was inspired by Amy’s attitude as much as her accomplishments, so we cannot wait for you to listen!

This is the longest FMC podcast to date, so get ready for over 2 hours of awesomeness!
Episode 37 kicks off with Pete and Gretchen giving a heartfelt thank you to Rob Bozovich for his editing instruction. Pete would still be editing episode 35 if it wasn’t for him. Thank you, Rob!
After sharing a story of one of Gretchen’s superfans, the couple recaps their week. They also catch you up on a conversation with Peter Bilarczyk, who offered a free coaching session after they interviewed him in episode 29.
The rest of the episode is all about Pete’s interview with fellow Sub-30 Club member, Susan Heard. Susan lost her son, David, to cancer in February 2011. As you can imagine, Susan struggled for years before deciding to live life. Since then, Susan has become a runner, triathlete, and advocate for families coping with cancer and the grieving process. Susan’s story is heartfelt, heartbreaking, inspiring, and, ultimately, uplifting. Her outlook on life and the story of David’s legacy is something you will not want to miss!

Episode 35 starts out by saying, “Let the music play!”
That’s right, Pete figured out how to edit well enough to get the music in along with combining a few tracks. It took him a week and the sound is ok, but, really, we all had zero confidence this day would come.
Pete and Gretchen give a brief recap of their week before the attention turns to this week’s special guest. Pete was able to interview Trevor Spencer from the uber-popular and long-running Marathon Training Academy podcast. Trevor is funny, insightful, and fully of great stories. It was a treat to have on podcasting royalty!

Episode 34 is back to Pete and Gretchen sharing an update on what is happening in their lives. Gretchen’s “Views from the Couch” and Pete’s training are the big topics early.
Pete gives a few shout outs to those who had races the week before and goes into how heat hurt their friend, Kevin, at the Lincoln Marathon. He finishes and shows what grit is all about. Also, if you want to hear Rob Bozovich’s marathon recap, give it a listen here on Endurance for Everyone.
Then the topic shifts to a negative review the couple received. They give their response and Pete may get a little passionate. They invite honest reviews but ask that their kids are not a part of them.
Finally, within the context of the review, they talk about an interview with Dr. Michael Gervais on the Pursuit with Purpose podcast. Dr. Gervais talks about FOPO – Fear of Other People’s Opinions – and how that impacts their lives.

Episode 33 may have some sound quality issues. We are working on them and will re-release when they are fixed, but hopefully they aren't too bad and you can get through it.
The episode starts out the usual way, sans music, with some wine and Gretchen’s #viewsfromthecouch. After a brief preview of what Pete thinks is next for him, they get to an interview with James Lacher.
Four years ago, James weighed over 400 pounds and wasn’t doing much to make sure his health was on track. After getting a new job with the San Luis Obispo Transportation Authority, James used his new health insurance to explore bariatric surgery.
After undergoing the surgery, James started running, met his girlfriend, and has accomplished a ton, including recently completing his first marathon. James has an interesting story and Pete and Gretchen really dive deep with him.

Episode 32 is different in a few ways. First, Gretchen isn’t there from the start. Life sometimes gets in the way and their toddler didn’t cooperate. She shows up later, but, since the episodes are so close together, no #viewsfromthecouch. Settle in though because this is a LONG episode.
There’s also no wine. Seriously, what is wrong with them? Well, here’s the deal…
Rob Bozovich, the co-host of the Endurance for Everyone podcast, joins Pete and Gretchen, so the show had to get going! Rob was kind enough to be there from the start and help guide Pete through his race in review.
The first 40 minutes plus of the show are all about Pete’s incredible half-marathon at the Illinois Marathon in Champaign-Urbana, IL. He was emotional from the get go and he talks about why. Overall, the race went really well and there are a lot of details here. A written race report is coming soon because, even after all that time, he didn’t fully capture everything that happened.
Somewhere in there Gretchen joins and she’s around for the 40-minute conversation with Rob. They talk about Rob’s start in running and triathloning (is that a word??), as well as the fact that he’s a pretty big guy despite, in his words, being the runt of the litter in his family. Rob’s dedication to improving in all aspects of his athletic endeavors is incredible. We think you’ll find him as inspirational as we do!
