Books have been an anchor to escape reality! And under this umbrella do we start a lovely pink sofa conversation with a long time friend, Jorge, a writer and teacher. During this difficult time teachers have been heroes - or shall we say that we have all finally seen how crucial they are to our society. He is bringing light and safety to our kids with his passion for reading and writing. Jorge is an inspiration for sure!
We have worked together years ago- I did illustrate some of his poems as he allowed me to give shape to the ideas he had captured on ink. But also, life as it does unfold in very complex ways, had a common fate reserved for us.
We have both lost our mothers.
One of the short stories we worked together was about that exact event - which had not happen at that time, we knew it would happen as its the law of nature but we did not know it would happen unnaturally painfully sudden. Looking back at that piece now, it resonates in ways that scratches emotions and definitely touches home.

Fast fashion is not ethical, we all know that, but we still consume it! Why? I guess, same as with COVID19, the problem seemed to be far away, somewhere in China. And the same happens with non-sustainable fashion. This is about to change, as most crises the change will come with a financial impact. I have been speaking with artists, creative minds, kick-ass entrepreneurs and fashion designers to think of future landscapes and how the world we know could – and actually should - change. We feel this is an opportunity to reset and change those dynamics we know are toxic - emotionally and environmentally - hence why I am exploring potential trends post-COVID19 in the fashion industry! I remember meeting Jessica Ballantyne in a meeting. An art meeting. Those killer eyes and killer ideas. I remember her perfectly, always walking into the room wearing the most outlandish hats on hearth. I wondered… what does she do – what kind of art? And there it was this massive, gigantic, naked woman with a flower coming out of her ass. You cannot miss her paintings, and you should not miss her! Maybe not your taste, maybe too much for you, maybe not for your living room – your kids may wonder what that flower is doing there - but this woman is pure FUEGO. With time I understood that, sometimes the first layer does give the wrong idea. Not that I was not aware of this social phenomenon, I suffered from it all the time, but at times we women are more sexist then men. You know the saying about judging a book by its covers? Well, Jessica’s surrealist influence became obvious to me the more I saw her other paintings and the rest of her series. She is a cocktail Molotov of pop culture, surrealism, feminist art and porn. Art is a therapy, but she is also a therapist herself. Committed to teaching and to bringing people together. She is a doer and as such, I texted her two days ago about this crazy “Pink Sofa” idea. Tatiana Robles, Barranquilla Colombia, CEO from Laetitia. I met this truly kick-ass women in 2004 when we where young women 19 years, ready to go into the fashion industry in one of the most exciting cities in the world Madrid. I have always been mesmerized by her lovely and soft Colombian accent, so charming but determined at the same time. She is one of the few that did finish college and get her own brand in place, a decade later she has 3 stores and a real lifestyle brand. One of the big challenges the fashion industry face today is the environment. Most average consumes know the amount of water that goes into fabric making, the impact of the chemicals and the low-paid workers. Fast-fashion is not sustainable and in fact it has shown to be harmful for humans and those communities that work in the industry. But Laetitia is different, Tatiana is also different, she embraces the need to learn and to evolve and she is not only relaunching her e-commerce experience now, but moving her brand toward a truly, genuine and inspiring lifestyle. To be from the Laetitia clang you need to love nature, be a strong woman, love yourself and enjoy exploring fashion as an experience. As Tatiana is saying “we want to consume experiences and have memories”, this is very true. She has full control over the production chain which gives her clients the ease that what they are wearing is made with love and that while they look stunning and beautiful in their dresses, Tatiana Robles is caring about the people and the production behind the brand. It is fair to say that Matt did introduce me to The Tunnel collective, through this group of people I met some really important and extraordinary individuals that I consider family today. As mentioned in the Pink Sofa Conversation with Matt, I remember getting into Bow Arts Studios in Shadwell and seeing his room being an absolute mess. A good mess. But a mess. Bottles of wine, canvases all over, brushes and paint. A lot of paint. Matthew Tudor tends to sit in a corner on an old chair and before taking the brush he enters into the zone - full concentration - in which he seems to connect with his subconsciousness. Mindfulness? Could be! “If I wasn’t an artist, I would be a delinquent” he says. Not sure I agree with that, as I do not think he has the bad in him, but I see him as one of the few bohemian artist in this current time - at least around me- , now it seems its always about the process and the idea, not for him. He is a painter and a proud one. He looks up to Caravaggio, who wouldn’t, Francis Bacon, who wouldn’t, but his intense and in-depth research takes him in a journey. 10 layers of paint that tell a story, a very methodical process that he has develops in the past decade, a process that allows him not to think but to do. Be in the moment, embrace art as his purpose in life and why not, give the rest of artist the hope that there are still real romantic artists out there defending the title with pride. @MathewTudor

There is no filter in her statements, she is fun, brings in humour in her discipline as an artist she is here to shake preconceived ideas. She described to me off camera how her latest trip to Brazil to the Amazon opened a door to her understanding of herself. She felt home, she found her gang and connected with the tribe – all looked like her or she looked like them – and something almost impossible to describe clicked. I met Sara Pathirane in the streets of Torino, Italy, now closed and in panic for the #Covid19. Back then we were going to university - 8 years ago- we both were in the same painting class. Since then, we have travelled to Sri Lanka, Jordan and visited each other multiple times, she is a real friend to me. Sara thinks of art as a process, a script in which she adds layers of narration. Suddenly the bridge between her paintings and her videos is clear. It all makes sense. She was the first Scandinavian person I have ever met, and I remember being absolutely impressed by her silences… silence. So powerful, such a small petite lady being so powerful standing there looking you straight in the eyes – not saying a word. I still find this the greatest superpowers she has.
