Cannes I Kick It

A podcast about film festivals

View Details

Another Cannes is in the books, so naturally we start off with a game about movies featured in the upcoming Tribeca lineup. Can we pinpoint the exact level of fame it takes to headline a Tribeca film? Eventually we talk about the shape of the festival from afar, some of the prize winners, and the overall narrative on this year's festival. We also have an in-depth discussion related to the festival world on the new rules from the Academy of Motion PIctures Arts and Sciences regarding the International Feature qualification for the Oscars. What are the implications for the awards, the festivals, and the overall distribution landscape? Then, J Catherine has been attending the Tone Glow Film Festival, and shares her thoughts on films like Levers, The Rib of the Greater Bay Area, Chronovisor. All this and Special Presentations! Send us money for journalism!

There are a few Cannes additions we give a brief rundown on and then it is time to use what YOU, our LISTENERS provided us to once again draft potential Cannes Juries. Using the list of POWERFUL NAMES we each select a 9 person jury and then select a President for that jury. We get into all sorts of questions about what a mononym can mean, how time works in this hypothetical scenario, and why our listeners skewed so heavily towards male coded names when the prompt was "Powerful." MAKES YOU THINK, DOESN'T IT?

We decided, decisively and with a great amount of thought, to sit out Sundance and Berlin and South by Southwest this year. But Cannes's a callin', and we cannot resist the idea of at least one more festival season to chat about. So J Catherine and Andy got together to look ahead at what might play on the croisette- from the Neon lineup to the French obligations, we get into it all. We'll be back in 2 weeks to discuss how the lineup all settled out!

We talk about Ryan Coogler's SINNERS, how it functions as a horror or action movie, how the thematic material is sitting with us, and the fascinating structural choices made in it. On the eve of Venice kickoff and Toronto travel, we take a look at what the general public can see from this fall's slate. That's right, it's a return to TRAILERS! What's exciting? What seems annoying? Will anyone get passive aggressive about a trailer and other people liking or not liking it? These questions, and also like a 10-15 minute digression on Chinese Buffets, all in this episode!

As crowds gather in France and it seems like there have been blessedly few notable headlines (as of recording this episode, anyways) we discuss the opening press conference of Cannes and Meryl Streep's honorary Palme presentation. We also catch up on a good bit of news from Venice and others, and have a nice chat about Kevin Costner's Deadline interview. And to top it all off, Bertrand Bonello's COMA is getting something of a theatrical rollout in America on the heels of THE BEAST, and we've been able to take a look at his pandemic era look at teenage girlhood. We hope Patricia Coma recommends this episode, seems like it would be good for traffic.

First things first. This episode is NOT a gr*bag. However, we do have a wide range of topics to discuss. What's happening with Sundance and Slamdance? Who is on the Cannes Jury? What do we think of recent new releases CHALLENGERS and THE BEAST? What's happening with the organization of TIFF? For that last question, Emilio is joined by Soraya Roberts to discuss her recent article How Did TIFF’s Lightbox Become Its Money Pit? . All other questions are handled by the panel.

Food glorious food! 2023 Cannes Charmer THE TASTE OF THINGS has made its way to digital release and so we put our napkins in collars and dig into the sumptuous feast from Tran Anh Hung. We also look back to an earlier food movie, 1987 Un Certain Regard title BABETTE'S FEAST from Gabriel Axel. Our relationship to food on film, what we can learn about a character from how they eat and how they cook, and the nature of art and pleasure, we get into all of it. The time has come around again for us to take an early look at what this year's Cannes competition might look like. It may not feel quite so early anymore as the trades scramble to catch up with us, but nonetheless Jesse has put together another barely informed set of potential entrants from which her co-hosts will crown an early Palme d'Or favorite. Do we think Terrence Malick will finally release a new film? Do we expect Neon to continue their streak? Will our listeners send us twenty dollars so that Jesse will give Vampire Weekend's 'Father of the Bride' another spin?

Check out the podcast episode on Berlin Jesse mentioned with critics Öykü Sofuoğlu and Flavia Dima.

For TOO LONG, Valentine's Day has been focused on a narrow, and dare we say, Hallmark Approved, definition of Romantic Love. Well, we here at Cannes I Kick It have some questions about that. What about the steady love of friendship? Or the love that forms from the artistic collaboration between director and actor? Leonard Bernstein is one of the most important musical figures of the 20th century. He is also the Maestro, as explored in the upcoming film MAESTRO, directed by noted weird guy Bradley Cooper. We wanted some more context before MAESTRO makes its way across America, so we turned to America's preeminent MAESTRO authority, FRAN HOEPFNER! Together we do some light previewing of the film, and dig into a range of Bernstein's composing works: ON THE TOWN, SYMPHONY NO. 2: AGE OF ANXIETY, ON THE WATERFRONT, and CANDIDE.

NYFF is close to wrapping up, so we've gotten a good idea of how New York has reacted to all sorts of things. We discuss that, the rest of the fall festival landscape, some AFI odds and ends, and then turn to look at an earlier work from JANET PLANET director ANNIE BAKER, her 2017 play THE ANTIPODES. We discuss the world Baker creates in the play, where it departs from her earlier work, and what we find so compelling about her as an artist.

TIFF concluded, Venice has long ago handed out it's Lions and Cups, and most of the CIKI crew is back at home. We get together to go over the big winners of the 2 awardsy Fall Fests (congrats to POOR THINGS and AMERICAN FICTION), break down the balance of our TIFF slates, and generally gas on about the state of theatrical distribution and managing online inventory for ticketed events in a fair way.

It's TIFF traveling time! As this episode is released we are in or making our way to Toronto, so of course it is the natural time for a loose episode of different things. Cannes Blockbusters are not the only unjuried film festival slate in the world. So having exhausted this avenue, we turn to New York Film Festival, famously uncompetitive, to inject a little competition and conflict into their whole affair. The slate? Films that played in the opening slot of NYFF in the new millennium so far. Returning to join us as President of our Jury? The great DAVID SIMS of BLANK CHECK with Griffin and David. Together we figure out what it is About Schmidt, how to split the David Fincher of it all, and how we can only give one award to Carnage. All this and some general chat about the shape of TIFF and NYFF this year.

The most important out of Hollywood right now is the growing fight on behalf of the makers to get a fair deal so they can keep their lives as working artists and craftspeople. To help us examine this phenomenon through our specialty lens we welcome writer and card-carrying (and currently striking) member of the WGA EMILY KACZMAREK (Monsterland, The Staircase) to talk us through the current moment on the ground and the many wide-ranging implications in the fight for the shape of the industry. And we also took this as a great excuse to look at 1979 Cannes Competition title and Best Actress winner NORMA RAE, starring the great Sally Field. The midbudget movie, the depiction of small town life, the quality of Sally Field's hair, we get into it all together.

You've all been begging for it, and so finally here it is The Second Manktacular. Two years ago, the Twelve Guests of Mankmas helped us to explore every nook and cranny of David Fincher's brand new film Mank. But now, in 2022, Mank has acquired enough age as to be transformed. What will we find? Will Mank's rind have gotten funky? Will it have the good type of mold or the bad type of mold? How many guests will be on the Second Manktacular? (zero) Should Zach Galifianakis have played Mank? Does the cheese metaphor make it into the episode? Who will be the jury president for the competition of the 2023 Berlinale? All there is, is Mank. Have a happy holiday.

We've got our first festival lineup for 2023! Next year's Sundance lineup gives us high profile premieres, a look at the avant-garde, and our most exciting cast rundown yet! Andrew Bujalski has a new movie out. Were you aware? Having premiered quietly at Tribeca and then coming out even move quietly on VOD, THERE THERE is ambitious both structurally and in its production, and we are here to talk about it since it seems no one else will! We pair it with it's structural sibling, Max Ophüls' LA RONDE. Jesse talks Improv! Andy talks about acting duets! It's a goofy delight!

Tradition keeps us centered. We need things to return to year after year, cycle after cycle. It is our light in the darkness. But sometimes, the light in the darkness is a little too bright. Hence, it is our second annual SHADESGIVING/SHORTSGIVING episode! Once again we all brought a short to the table: James Benning and Bette Gordon's THE UNITED STATE OF AMERICA, Nick Park's WALLACE & GROMIT IN THE WRONG TROUSERS, Niki Lindroth von Bahr's THE BURDEN, and Peter Tscherkassky's TRAIN AGAIN. From the charming and hilarious to the experimental and existential, we are thankful for the opportunity to share this with our listeners!

In the past, when reading a book has been suggested as something the hosts of the show could do to provide fodder for an episode's destruction, there was yelling and gnashing of teeth. But now, with James Gray's Cannes premiere finally having its theatrical run and making its way to the VOD market, we are finally to break through the long resistance to the written word, and pair it some required reading. That's right, we're pairing ARMAGEDDON TIME with some short stories from George Saunders' LIBERATION DAY, "The Mom of Bold Action," "Love Letter," and "Ghoul." We talk parallels, point of view, big performances, and more!

The Life of the Mind! It’s what John Goodman promises/threatens to show us near the end of the Coen Brothers exceptional Cannes favorite BARTON FINK. We’ve talked in the past about how the volume of wins for FINK was such a sensation that Cannes instituted new rules about how to properly designate multi-award winning films, but what about the movie itself? We get into all of it, the cast, the setting, and where it sits in the ever popular Coens oeuvre. Also discussed: Important Cannes Fortnite (and other) news.

South by Southwest has come and gone, so we start off this week looking at the many many many winners from the film side of Austin’s big fest. After a thorough look at those naming rights, we take a look at another capitalistic dystopia, the world of Kathryn Bigelow’s reclaimed classic STRANGE DAYS! This is our first “Listener Pick” made by a recurring Ko-Fi donor to the show! We look at the brutality, innovation, and unsettling nature of the Ralph Fiennes/Angela Basset starring NYFF Centerpiece.

100 episodes! What a long strange road it’s been and we have, of course, no choice but to celebrate by following up last years 12 GUESTS OF MANKMAS with a brand new TACULAR, the FRANCETACULAR! Of course we are naturally discussing the films FRANCE (directed by Bruno Dumont) and THE FRENCH DISPATCH (directed by Wes Anderson). We have a panoply (again, 12!) of guests to touch on topics such as “Is FRANCE funny?” “How do these movies depict journalism?” and “What do we think of French people?” We apologize for the obscene length, but we will be taking a short break so feel free to break up your listening to cover our absence! We wish a Very Merry Mankmas to all our listeners!

Slowly but surely we are getting to the bottom of what exactly happened at Cannes 2006, this week we take a look at what is perhaps the bleakest film of all time, Bruno Dumont’s FLANDERS. We pair it with a very tonally different recent offering of his, SLACK BAY. Joining us to ponder these extremely extreme movies is comedian and improv teacher WILL HINES! How does Dumont’s portrayal of war land with an audience? What exactly is his festival history? And how do The Klumps enter into all this? After a brief sojourn about Jordan Peele’s recently announced NOPE we lay Cannes 2021 to rest, discussing the last few premieres, Spike Lee at the awards ceremony, and the winners past and present, before a mini review about Palme Winner Julie Ducournau’s first feature, RAW. It’s a jam packed episode, catch that festival fever!

We've got a week to cool our heels before reacting to full Cannes madness so we have decided to invite the foremost Steven Soderbergh expert, William Taylor (@elsoderbergho) to talk about a pair of new releases. Zola (directed by Janicza Bravo) and No Sudden Move (directed by Steven Soderbergh). We talk about Zola being an excellent work of adaptation, the most recent period of Soderbegh's facinating career and Succession cast members finding their sweet spot in film.

What does it take to get a movie made? This is question we explore through our return to Cannes 2006 with Nanni Moretti’s story of a down on his luck Italian film producer, IL CAIMANO. Joining us is producer in his own right, of the George Lucas Talk Show, Patrick Cotnoir! We get into the tonal whiplash, the COMEY RULE of it all, and all admit how little we know about the Italian film industry and Italian political history. The natural segue then is to talk about THE BEGINNING, the making of documentary about STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE which originally came on the DVD. Rick McCallum, Ewan McGregor, John Williams, and the joys and the cringe of a Behind The Scenes project are all on the table. All that and a special shoutout to the #BTSArmy!
