A quilombo or mocambo was a refuge for liberated slaves in colonial Brazil. Radio Mukambo is the asylum for those who want to escape the pop/rock/electro dictatorship, a place where you’ll find Afro-grooves from around the world.

From Brussels to the world, Radio Mukambo immerses you in Afro-grooves and the pulsation of our cities where sounds get mixed up to create global sounds without borders. Afrobeat, Afro-Latin & Afro-Brazilian, LusAfrican beats, soukouss, ethiogrooves, Arab bass, reggae/dub/dancehall and hip-hop with a ethnic/regional flavour.

Radio Mukambo takes you to Copenhagen (Denmark) to discover Nuri, an upcoming musician who creates his own blend of afrofuturism by combining archival field recordings from diverse African traditions with electronic beats, polyrhythmic grooves and North African trance music. His second album “Irun” is our cd of the week.
We also listen to afrobeat made in London and Budapest, Latin beat remixes, a new single by a living legend from Colombia ++ two African classics: afrobeat by Fela-disciple King Bucknor Jr and highlife by the great K. Frimpong, both albums reissued by Hot Casa Records.

Radio Mukambo takes you to Budapest to discover the pioneering Hungarian afrobeat group The Mabon Dawud Republic. The young band already toured in Ghana where they recorded with highlife legend Pat Thomas and vocalist and kologo player Stevo Atambire. Their debut LP is our cd of the week, on out Budabeats Records.

We have a special focus on Kampala's vibrant music scene with Ancient Astronauts' new EP Kampala Fire, showcasing young and raw vocal talents from all over the Ugandan capital.

Mukamko presents two great discoveries from Osaka: Amanita (afrobeat) & Stepak-Takraw (groove-afro-fusion). He keeps in grooving with Go Kiuchi in Osaka & Tokyo this week

This week Radio Mukambo focuses on MeYouZik, a festival taking place in Luxemburg on Wednesday and Thursday with Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 (afrobeat), Fogo Fogo (funaná), The Bongo Hop (Latin), Bantou Mentale (Congotronics), Ladama (Latin), Winston McAnnuf & Fixi (reggae), Les Tambours de Brazza (cd of the week) & beyond. Both days, Mukambo will be DJing in between the bands on the Holy Ghost stage.

We also look forward to the ethiogroove bands Azmari (Brussels) and Arat Kilo (Paris) with Malian singer Mamani Keita & American rapper Mike Ladd coming to Helden in het Park in Eeklo on Thursday.

This week is one of the busiest of the year in Beljam, with Polé Polé and Trefpunt festival at Gentse Feesten (Ghent) and Sfinks festival in Antwerp. They bring in international names like Orchestra Baobab, Jungle by Night, Throes + The Shine, Gato Preto, Maga Bo, and local talent such as Kolonel Djafaar, Baloji, Anavantou, Azmari & Kosmo Sound.

The cd of the week takes us to Tel Aviv, where the 14 piece Hoodna orchestra serves a blend of free flow afrobeat riddims, heavy dance-floor afro-funk and a lot of ethiojazz on their latest release 'Ofel'.
