Ep 97 of the hanging with Coach Noonan podcast features the texas high school football insider legend, Matt Stepp. Matt’s first awareness of football was watching the Chicago Bears pummel the Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX. It grew to a full-blown football addiction after he attended the 2001 3A Division I state title game at Kyle Field when his own Everman Bulldogs beat Sinton 25-14. He is now the ultimate Texas high school football insider, breaking the majority of coaching changes throughout the state every offseason, and appearing at countless football-related events year-round.
His passion for the sport and the people that make it possible is unmatched. His deep ties to the coaching community and knack for spotting teams on the rise make his columns and Twitter account must-follows, whether it’s football season or not. For the three or four minutes each year he is not thinking about football, you can find him hanging out with his wife, travelling or eating Texas barbecue. Episode 92 features a great strength coach and community leader, Coach Glenn Revell. Glenn “Coach Rev” Revell is the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Central Catholic HS in San Antonio, TX. Coach Rev has a bachelor’s degree from Hardin-Simmons University and a master’s degree from Angelo State University. EP 90 of the Hangin’ with Coach Noonan podcast features world-renowned strength coach, Travis Mash. Travis Mash has been strength training for over 21 years and has been working with athletes on their strength, speed, and athletic performance for over 15 years. Travis has worked with athletes and non-athletes of all levels from NFL and Olympic hopefuls, to 7-year-olds just starting out, to a 70-year-old senior seeking increased mobility. Travis is a published author for several strength and conditioning journals and continues to work with several colleges such as the University of North Carolina, Wake Forest University, Appalachian State University, and Wofford University. Travis is a current world champion in powerlifting and has held the all-time pound-for-pound world record. Episode 82: In this episode, I talk with a financial planner for coaches, Eric Bartel. Eric Bartel owns a financial planning firm headquartered in Arlington TX called Financial Coaching. Eric has 15 years of experience serving as a financial advisor to high school, college, and pro football coaches across the country. Prior to starting his career in financial planning, Eric worked for an NFL sports agent, in the scouting department of the Houston Texans, and as a salary cap assistant for the New York Jets. Eric earned his Masters's degree in sports business & finance from New York University, and he earned a double major Bachelor's degree in finance & risk management from the University of Louisiana, where he also played football for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Upon receiving his Bachelor’s degree in May 2004, Eric was recognized as an Academic All-American and named the university’s Most Outstanding Graduate. In 2007, Eric & his wife (Leslie) were married on a TV show called “Platinum Weddings”. They now live in Euless, TX, and have their hands full raising three children (Annabelle Grace is 11, Sean Ryan is 9, & John Wyatt is 6).

In this episode, I talk with the Director of Strength and Conditioning at Florida State University, Josh Storms. Josh Storms was named Florida State’s director of strength and conditioning on Dec. 28, 2019. Coach Storms earned Master Strength and Conditioning Coach distinction, the highest honor given in the strength and conditioning coaches profession, by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa) in 2018. Certified through both the CSCCa and National Strength and Conditioning Association, he was the strength coach for Memphis football from 2016-19 after working with football for 11 years on the sports performance staff at Arizona State. Coach Storms has worked with Mike Norvell each of his six seasons as a head coach, playing an integral role in the development and continued rise of those football programs. Coach Storms spent 2005-15 at Arizona State, helping develop student-athletes who participated in a school-record five straight bowl games covering his final five seasons in Tempe. Coach Storms joined the Arizona State staff after two years as an assistant strength coach at UNLV. He spent 2001 as a seasonal assistant strength coach with the Minnesota Vikings. Coach Storms played tight end at the University of South Dakota and earned his bachelor’s degree in recreation in 2001. In this episode, I talk with Strength and Conditioning Coach and Entrepreneur, Micah Kurtz. Micah Kurtz is the Assistant Athletics Director & Director of Sports Performance at Windermere Preparatory School. In addition, he consults on projects regarding youth athletic development education for the NFL, USA Basketball, USA Football, and Nike Football. Previously, he was the Director of Strength and Conditioning at AC Flora high school (Forest Acres, South Carolina). During his time there, AC Flora won 14 state championships and was twice named the state’s athletic program of the year.
Coach Kurtz also serves as the Strength and Conditioning Consultant Coach to the 9-time high school basketball national champions and winner of the 2016 Dick’s National Tournament Oak Hill Academy. During his time there he has worked with NBA players Sindarius Thornwell, Quinn Cook, Keldon Johnson, and Cody and Caleb Martin.
Kurtz has been named a state strength coach of the year three times and was named the NHSSCA Southeast Strength Coach of the Year in 2021, a Top 40 under 40 Sports Professional by Coach & AD Magazine in 2018, and the NSCA National Strength Coach of the Year in 2016.

In this episode, I talk with the Director of Sports Performance & Nutrition for Mesquite ISD, Blake Cundiff. Coach Cundiff and I had the pleasure of working together when he and I both joined Mesquite ISD in 2016. Prior to coming to Mesquite ISD, Coach Cundiff spent several seasons as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Texas State football team. During his 22-year career in the strength and conditioning field, Cundiff has trained a wide variety of athletes ranging from high school football, baseball, and hockey players to NFL, NHL and MLB stars such as Pro Football Hall of Fame members Troy Aikman, Larry Allen, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, and Emmitt Smith. He also trained NHL All-Star Brett Hull. Cundiff joined Texas State’s staff after serving as the strength and conditioning coach at Albany from 2008-April 2011, where he worked with the football and basketball teams, and serving as the executive sports performance director at Velocity Sports Performance in Missouri City, Texas from Mar. 2007-July 2008. He also was an associate director of strength and conditioning at Minnesota, where he was involved with all aspects of the Golden Gopher football strength program from 2005-07. Prior to his stint at Minnesota, Cundiff was an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 1997-2000. Dallas advanced to the playoffs twice during his tenure. Before coaching in the NFL, Cundiff spent four years as an assistant strength coach at North Texas from 1993-97, and was the head strength coach for the Grapevine High School football program for two years. His experience also includes being the owner and director of Prostar Sports Performance. In addition, he served as the strength coach for the 1994 and 1995 Emmitt Smith Football Camps, and as the director of strength and conditioning for the 1995 Dallas Stars Junior Hockey Camp. He also was a speed, strength, and conditioning consultant for the Dallas Stars. A Texas native, Cundiff is a member of the NHSCA, earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise physiology and injury rehabilitation at North Texas in 1995. In this episode, I talk with a long-time friend & great basketball coach, Aaron Proctor. Coach Proctor is the Director of Basketball Operations at Southeast Missouri University. Coach Proctor and I had the fortune of coaching at Bellaire High School together back in the day. Coach Proctor has 14 years of coaching experience which also includes one season as an assistant coach at Arkansas-Fort Smith and two years as a graduate assistant at Kansas State. At Arkansas-Fort Smith, Coach P was involved in all facets of the program, including recruiting, scouting game, and practice preparation. At Kansas State, he assisted in the breakdown of game video, scouting, and on-court skill development, and recruiting. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Proctor coached for 10 years at the high school/prep school level. He served as head coach at North Forest High School (2017-18) and Heights High School (2012-13) in Houston, Texas, and at Alvin High School (2013-15) in Alvin, Texas. Proctor also spent six years as an assistant coach at Bellaire High School in Houston and has Coached 15U and 17U teams with the Texas PRO Adidas Gauntlet summer program. A native of Houston, Proctor attended California State University San Bernardino where he played one season for Head Coach Jeff Oliver. During that season in 2004-05, Proctor helped lead the Coyotes to a 21-6 record. CSUSB captured the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament that year. Proctor graduated from CSUSB with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 2006. He then taught high school English for 10 years. Proctor completed his Master of Science degree in Academic Advising from K-State in 2017. He and his wife, Ashford, have a daughter, Harper. We talk about his career, building a basketball staff, and even what the future may hold for him. Anthony Stone is a Physical Education teacher at Gregory Elementary School and Varsity Quarterbacks, Running Backs, and Offensive Box Coach at Boylan High School in Rockford, Ill. He was also the Defensive Coordinator & Assistant Head Coach for the 2017 Women’s Australian National Outback Team & used to write blogs for “Hudl'' & “Firstdown Playbook.” In July 2016, he was named to the Hudl 100 list. He has presented at IAPHERD, the top physical education convention in Illinois, on how to get students moving with his Games Galore presentations. He has also presented at the Glazier Clinics on quarterbacks, special teams, & Back to the Basics Topics. He was the Defensive Coordinator for the 2010 U.S. Women’s National Tackle Football Team, winners of the IFAF Women’s World Championship in which Team USA did not allow a point in three games with an overall score of 201-0. The rest of his coaching experience involves coaching in the CIFL and the IWFL Leagues as well as Beloit College (Linebackers/Special Teams Coordinator) and Rockford University (Quarterbacks/Wide Receivers). In this episode, I talk with Coach Clay Bewley. Clay Bewley is currently serving as the Speed, Strength, and Conditioning Coach at Estrella Foothills High School in Goodyear, AZ. Clay is responsible for the development and implementation of the all-in-school offered Strength and Conditioning courses and the athletic development for all 22 school-sponsored sports at EFHS. In addition, Clay is responsible for the weight training and athletic performance courses offered by EFHS. In this episode, I talk with a great friend and mentor, Jeremiah Villarreal. Coach V is the head boys soccer coach at West Mesquite High School in Mesquite, TX. He is a follower of Christ, husband, father, and coach. He grew up in mesquite and is a cancer survivor. He has been blessed enough to have players with heart and passion play for me. In the four years, Coach V has led the Wranglers, they have earned two bi-district championships and two district championships. Last year’s season was cut short due to Covid-19. Coach V has also been awarded the District 13-5A coach of the year twice and TASCO Region 2 coach of the year as well. The West Mesquite Boys varsity soccer team finished the 2020-2021 season 11-10-3 overall, 9-4-1 in District, and earned their 4th consecutive playoff appearance. In this episode, I talk with the largest guest we’ve ever had on the podcast, Gabe “ The Texas Titan” Pena. For those who do not follow the sport of Strongman, Gabe was recently a contestant in the 2020 World’s Strongest Man competition in November. Gabe was the first competitor to represent Mexico and he hails from South Texas. Gabe’s strongman journey began in 2013 at a competition he won in Pharr, TX. From there he continued to train and compete, winning 3 national competitions in 2016, 2017, and 2019. Gabe earned his pro status by finishing 3rd in the 2020 Arnold. In 2015, Gabe took over Alpha Fit gym in Edinburg, TX where he trains several athletes and himself. Gabe currently does online coaching as well for a select few athletes looking to seriously train and potentially compete. Gabe and I talk about his time as a swimmer in high school, playing rugby, and much more. In 2016 he earned his first pro card in natural bodybuilding. In 2017 he earned pro status in two different natural bodybuilding organizations. He started competing in powerlifting in 2018 and he still holds the deadlift record for Virginia in the Masters 198-lb class. He was runner-up at Powerlifting Nationals in 2019. In this episode, I talk with Jacob Espinoza aka Jakey Snakey is a current senior at Santa Gertrudis Academy High School in Kingsville, Texas. Jacob is a multi-sport student-athlete competing in football, baseball, track, and cross country during his time at SGA. Jacob has received many recognitions from his on-field accomplishments such as several all-district team selections for football and baseball. Jacob is also an accomplished saxophonist and participant in the Mighty Lion Band at SGA. Jacob was selected as a drum major this school year for 2020-2021 and is a 4-time area qualifier in the ATSSB All-State Band Competition. In the classroom, Jacob is an outstanding student navigating both high school level and dual credit classes while maintaining A’s.
