This week in our series Make Me a Theologian we are laying the top of the sandwich down for the final chapters of Mere Christianity. What is the Trinity and how can God beget God? What do we as humans have to do with the God who stands outside of time? C.S. Lewis goes on to highlight the cost of our faith. Do we consider Christianity to be a hard or an easy life? And what is the purpose of becoming Christian? It sometimes feels too hard to explain why someone might need Jesus when their life is already so good. Is there more to Christianity than simply making us into 'nice, moral people'?

One thing we don't often focus on is the particular sin that causes the greatest separation between us and God. C.S Lewis talks about it as the Great Sin. What do you think it might be? There are also characteristics and virtues that have strong eternal value, and it's worth taking the time to consider how we might be cultivating those in our lives. Join the One Heart Radio team as they discuss Mere Christianity on this topic for another episode of Make Me a Theologian.

Why does C.S. Lewis emphasise the difference between Moral ideals and Moral Rules? There appear to be certain laws around the ways that humans interact, but how do we know what these laws are and where do we get them from? How does Christianity differ in the way we understand morality, and why do we need it if we now live under grace? We especially struggle when it comes to understanding questions around sex, commitment, and Christian behaviour. 'If what I am doing isn't hurting anyone else, how can you call it wrong?' This is a question we may encounter often, and Lewis sees it as an imperative that we as believers understand our response to this question.

If a good God made the world, why has it gone wrong? Why does God allow bad things to happen? And what do we have to do with it? Was Jesus just a moral teacher? Was he a lunatic? Or is he really God?

Tune into One Heart Radio this week for another episode of Make Me a Theologian. Don't forget to grab yourself a copy of Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis to read along.

One Heart Radio is back! This week, we open the pages of 'Mere Christianity' by C.S Lewis for our series Make Me a Theologian. What exactly does it mean to be a 'Christian'? In an effort to speak about what it really means vs. what we would like it to mean, we need to ask the questions surrounding the Law of Human Nature. What is it? Where does it come from? Is there any such thing as Right and Wrong? Before we begin to attempt to find a framework for God, Lewis leads us to inspect the points that we as human beings can agree upon based on our experience. If you would like to join us on this journey, we encourage you to get a copy of the book 'Mere Christianity' to aid you as we work through it together.

Make Me a Theologian: G.K. ChestertonIs there a difference between Christianity and other religions? Is Jesus really the only way to God? Is Liberal thinking really the true way to freedom for the modern world? These are some of the big questions we face in our culture today, amazingly relevant, just as they were a century ago in Chesterton's time. This week on OH Radio, we conclude our journey through Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton on some of these thought provoking questions, with a big finale that points to the convincing evidence of God through the miraculous and supernatural.

Have you ever thought that things should be a particular way? In life, do you work towards a certain vision you have for the future? Or do you prefer everything to stay just the way it is? What is the idea of Utopia all about?

This week, we talk about the conservative, the progressive, and then we ask the question: what are we called to be as Christians? Is it one or the other? Or is it something else entirely?

Listen and read along as we chew on a very meaty part of this theological sandwich; Orthodoxy, by G.K. Chesterton.

Would you call yourself an optimist or a pessimist? Could it be that as Christians we might be called to be something else? The difficulties we face with modern thought can be defined by where our loyalties lie, and this is a source of difficulty and concern for our generations when mixed in with the culture of today.

We also face criticisms which oftentimes appear paradoxical. What are we to think and do with such paradoxes? Tune in as we unpack Chesterton’s thoughts on these matters in this week’s episode of Make Me a Theologian.

There is humility, and then there is poisonous humility. This is when it is applied in the wrong context. We each have a will, and while it is important to know that by being in possession of a will, and by implication, in possession of freedom; the act of will is an act of self-limitation.

Rationalisation can limit our access to truth, while imagination can be our avenue to accepting it, and while 'the whole world is at war with reason', 'a man is a fool who complains that he cannot enter Eden by five gates at once.'

Let this be a small introduction into Week 2 of OH Radio's 'Make Me a Theologian', as we continue to delve into the mind of G.K. Chesterton through his book, Orthodoxy.

Not all of us are theologians, and not all of us have the time to become one. So, at OH Radio, we've put the challenge out there with this brand new series 'Make Me A Theologian', to the great Christian thinkers throughout history. We want to see whether they have what it takes to turn us from semi-ignoramuses into theologians.

We'll be working our way through some of their most famous pieces of literature to see how they have helped shape and uphold some of the most fundamental and central ideas of the Christian faith. Each week we will add another layer to our theological sandwich, and we think it will be delicious.

In this podcast, Week 1, we begin with the first two chapters of Orthodoxy by G.K. Chesterton. What is the trouble with self-belief? And why is orthodoxy important in this day and age? Why, indeed. How can it possibly be the answer that humanity needs in order to be saved from itself? We hope you enjoy coming on this journey with us over the coming months.

Needless to say, when we asked Shane Willard to join us for a little Q&A on One Heart Radio, we got more than we bargained for. When orthodoxy is mentioned, the common mind does not often divert directly to questions such as "Did you know that the first Christians were actually atheists?". Thoughts such as these leave the listener wondering where Shane is going to land, and every thought he presents is equally gripping. Shane's deep understanding of history and Jewish culture helps us to broaden our view of Jesus and the story in which we find ourselves, while also leading us to ask many more questions.

Shane himself has said on numerous occasions that a good message is neither to be agreed with nor disagreed with, it is to be wrestled with. We hope that this special episode leads you to do the same.

We draw to a close The Watchman Series in a final analysis of the soul, with a specific focus on the body. Our relationship with and our understanding of our body is often changing and developing as we go through different stages of our lives. What purpose does our body have in our spiritual walk? And what does the scripture have to say about how we are to conduct ourselves? Why do people still get sick, even after receiving the restoration of the Holy Spirit?

Watchman Nee opens up his perspective on the body surrounding sickness, healing, sin, holiness and identity.

‘The will of man can be taken as his ‘real self’ for it truthfully represents him.’ In our second last episode of the Watchman Series, we continue with our analysis of the soul, with a particular focus on the ‘will’. What defines our will? And how does our will define us? Watchman Nee gives great emphasis to the will as the central part of a person. But do we know how to relate our will to the direction of the Holy Spirit? And what are the potential dangers of passivity?

The Holy Spirit wants us to be enlightened and to know. We have been given a mind by God, but how do we use it actively along with the spirit? In this week's episode, we discuss the mind as a battlefield, and how the process of examination is important in discerning whether or not our intuition is in line with the Holy Spirit's voice. If you haven't listened to the Watchman Series, we recommend beginning your listening from Episode 24 on Body, Soul and Spirit and following the journey with Ben, Ash and Heidi as they walk us through 'The Spiritual Man' which you can download as a free PDF online.

This week, OH Radio takes a deeper look at the functions of the emotion within the soul in relation to our spiritual walk, and the pursuit of God’s will in our lives.

Why is it that we might feel God’s withdrawal from our lives? What could be His ultimate aim? And why does Watchman Nee define emotion as the greatest enemy of our pursuit of a spiritual life?

Tune in this week to a discussion surrounding these big questions, and more relating to desire, decisions, emotions and becoming watchful for the ways in which the enemy attempts to sabotage our calling to a higher spiritual state and to lead us away from God’s intentions for our lives.

Throughout the Watchman series, the question has remained; 'What are the characteristics and attributes of someone who is walking according to the spirit?'.

The Scriptures are like a guide to living in the spirit under the new covenant of grace. So, what does it mean to be contrite in spirit? Or to be someone who has a cool and fervent spirit? How do we know whether we are walking in power?

Tune in to Week 8 to find out what Watchman Nee teaches on the normalcy of the spirit.

What does it mean to be spiritual? Spirituality can have many interpretations and can often be misused when we lack understanding from a biblical perspective. If we don’t understand what it is to walk according to the Spirit, how can we expect to do it? How do we become spiritual men and women, and how do we discover the unique spiritual work of the individual?

We continue on in the journey of learning what it is to be a spiritual person in Week 5 of The Watchman series.

There is so much to be gained from this conversation. We encourage you to have a listen, read the relating chapters too, and have a discussion with somebody about something that might be stirred up for you.

What does the bible mean when it talks about ‘the flesh’? Why is it that I try to be a good Christian, but it feels way too hard? How can it be that I have been crucified with Christ, but I still struggle with sin? And why does the bible talk so much about dying to self?

The OH Radio team explore these questions in Week 3 of The Watchman Series, with a focus on what the bible teaches about the flesh, and what some of our personal experiences, inner wrestles, and pre-conceived ideas may be on the topic.
