This blog serves as a site for students enrolled in production-based courses at Wayne State University. Use the Google Calendar below to track our hours of business for the Media Arts Equipment Room (MAER).

Dear Filmmakers,
This is a reminder that December 9th is the final day to check out equipment. All equipment must be returned by Wednesday, December 11th.
Failure to return equipment by the deadline will result in a hold being placed on your account.
We hope you have a wonderful holiday break, and we look forward to seeing you in the new year! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Hello and Happy Holidays!As Thanksgiving Break approaches please note that the MAER will be closed from Wednesday the 27th to Friday the 29th of November! If you had prior checkout we have already reached out to you to confirm that you will be returning after break! If you have any questions or need assistance, please give us a call or send an email!
The MAER will be closed Friday November 15th. No pick ups or returns can happen on that day. Please plan accordingly. Please remember our 48 hour policy when placing your reservations. If you have any questions please give us a call, or shoot us an email. Remember, we are only able to respond DURING our open hours.

Due to Fall break, the MAER will not be open the 14th and 15th. If you have already sent in an equipment reservation we have adjusted the drop offs to the 16th, please refer to your emails. The site will allow you to submit reservations for Friday till 3:45 today the 9th.

Happy September! Just a few notes. We have updated the MAER hours which are listed above! Please understand that we are only able to answer and respond to calls/emails during these hours. If equipment is requested over the weekend and we have not confirmed or discussed this with you, please do not expect it to be ready the following Monday.
All equipment requests must be made 48 hours before pick up, NO exceptions. Lateness will result in a $10 fee each hour until returned.
Please refer to the new policies and procedures that are posted on the blog. If you have any questions please feel free to come into the MAER for a chat!

Greetings!
As we arrive at the end of the semester here is an update on equipment packages. The last time to rent equipment will be on the 19th, this means the last day to put in an equipment request in is on the 17th!
All checkouts must be returned by the 22nd of April. That is the last day the MAER is open to the public, we will not be making any exceptions of past due equipment. If you cannot abide by our policies, your next semester privileges will be affected and you will start off with one sanction.
Please coordinate with your professors and crews in order to have an efficient and safe shoot within these last few weeks if necessary! Have a beautiful summer and we will see you next semester!

The studios have made some concessions on IATSE’s demands regarding long production hours, but an agreement still remains “a ways off,” according to an update from one IATSE local on Thursday.
David O’Ferrall, the business agent of IATSE Local 487, told members that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers had agreed to 10-hour turnaround times on all productions. He also said there had been “movement on weekend turnarounds” — one of the union’s top priorities.
Negotiators are hoping to avert a strike, which would shut down TV and film production across the country. More than 52,000 IATSE members voted over the weekend to authorize IATSE’s chief Matthew D. Loeb to call a strike if the union’s demands are not met.

Let’s face it — everyone’s making videos with their iPhones these days and posting them to social media. The video quality is certainly adequate, so long as they get the lighting in the ballpark. But have you noticed how they sound? Oh, yeah. There’s a defining sound that comes from an iPhone mic — or mics. iPhones may have as many as four microphones built into the body. And you know how many of those microphones were designed for recording high-quality music? None.So, the question I wanted to explore was “What does it take to get better-quality audio into your iPhone?” And I’m not talking about multiple mics, mixers, or interfaces. I just wanted to find out what the easy options are that an artist or musician can attach or adapt to their iPhone and how much difference they can make in the sonic quality.For this test, I didn’t put any microphones right in the singer’s face. I wanted to keep the mics off camera and as inconspicuous as possible. All the mics you’ll hear were plugged into the iPhones either directly or by means of an Apple adapter with no external hardware, except the Rode NTG-2 shotgun, which I ran into an Apogee Solo interface. All the video recordings were made using the Shure Motiv Video app, which allows control of various audio parameters.READ MORE
