In today's episode, I'm keeping it real, like your business bestie.
Remember, no matter how you're leveling up or juggling your business, don't overlook contracts. Whether you're dealing with new clients, hiring, or partnering up, contracts are your safety net when lawyers step in. Taking contracts lightly can lead to messy situations, what I call "untied knots."
From day one, make sure to dot those I's and cross those T's in your business. And when things get rocky and lawyers enter the picture, trust your instincts – they're usually spot on!

A few days ago, I was going through my email when I came across my midyear and final year-end review from when in sales in corporate many, many years ago.
----more----
Before starting my own business, I spent over a dozen years in corporate, holding multiple positions for many companies.
----more----
Honestly, reading this performance review made me angry. Not because of the company or the manager who wrote it. It made me angry because it highlights everything wrong with being a high achiever with chronic illness working for a corporation.
----more----
This experience prompted me to make an episode about the review itself and the challenges I’ve faced as a high-performing employee with a chronic illness.
----more----
In this episode, I’ll share my midyear and final year-end review, my experiences in corporate, why I believe we are experiencing the great resignation, and how corporations can build better systems and a better work environment to help people with illnesses succeed in the workplace.
----more----
Have you worked a corporate job, or are you currently working in corporate? I’d love to know about your experiences!

Lately, my chronic illness has been scaring me more than it has in a long time. In this episode, I share with you why and how that is affecting my business.
----more----
People who are sick and successful are just made differently. Do you agree?
----more----
It takes a lot out of a person to do regular everyday things. On top of that, being a mom, wife, and an entrepreneur while dealing with a Crohn’s flare, I am finding myself constantly fatigued, burnt out, and ultimately just tired. I love what I do, and I’m very passionate about my business. The illness doesn’t change that, but it does make it much harder to run than when I was in remission.
----more----
December 2022 was plagued with illness for us. We had a fever for what lasted about 2 weeks. Thankfully, we were healthy during the holidays but eventually got sick again. I feel like I haven’t given any updates about my Crohn’s disease in a while, especially about this most recent flare, so that is what this episode is about.
----more----
I will share with you what’s going on in my mind daily, why I’m so scared of my Crohn’s disease, and how it’s affecting my business.
----more----
Being sick and successful doesn’t mean that every day is easy or glamorous. There are many extremely tough times and battles to be fought too. I want to share both sides of that with you authentically.

Fortunately, all the hard work paid off, and we won! We got the business and started working with our new client.

Off the bat, I’ve already noticed some red flags but didn’t mind until a particular incident happened, and I realized that working with them isn’t worth all the stress and all the space they’re taking up in my mind.

From Natalie:
First of all, I want to thank you for listening to and supporting this podcast. I wouldn’t be here without YOU! So, thank you for celebrating this milestone with me.
----more----
In divine timing, I just got a Facebook memory the day before I recorded this episode that it has been 3 years since starting this podcast.
----more----
It’s crazy how much can change in 3 years.
----more----
But what didn’t change is how passionate I am for sharing the message of #SickandSuccessful ever since I was diagnosed in 2007, the summer before university. I knew my illness would not stop me from being successful. I want you to know it's not only possible for me. It's possible for you!
----more----
If you’ve been my podcast listener for a while now, you might have heard me say “sick and successful” several times.
----more----
But do you know what that truly means to me?
----more----
Well, that’s what we’re going to talk about today!
----more----
Since it’s the 100th episode of the Sick and Successful Podcast, I will share with you what it truly means to me and how important it is in my life.

The beginning of 2021 has been challenging for me for several reasons. Still, it was also one of the pivotal moments for my business, where we restructured everything. I took a step away from my business partner at that time, we brought on 5 new contractors, and our business blew up! When April came, my business slowed down, and I couldn’t go on sales and discovery calls as much. Around August or September, things started ramping up again — we hired 3 new employees, started making sales & discovery calls, and brought in new clients. We also relaunched Ready, Set, Record, and at the same time, we had to finish a Request For Proposal (RFP) for a big company we wanted to work with.
----more----
It was a lot in 1 week, and it felt like it was just one thing after another. Interviewing applicants, hiring, onboarding, relaunching RSR, writing the RFP, taking care of my family... it was too much, and it felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders.
----more----
Can you relate?
----more----
I experienced a season of burnout that I hadn’t felt before. The spark and excitement for my business were gone, and I felt like I was letting everyone down.
----more----
I had a lot of thoughts in my head, and I just wanted to burn my business down to the ground and start applying for VP of Marketing jobs for companies.
----more----
Thankfully, I got through that season of burnout with the support of my family, my coach, my team, and the supportive people around me.
----more----
If you’re going through the same season or feel like you’re about to hit burnout, listen to this episode to find out what I did!

It’s no secret that starting a business is not easy. The good thing is that we can now create a business as long as we optimize what we have – the internet, our phones, resources and skills. Unlike before, starting and building a business would cost so many dollars.

----more----
I’ll share with you how I saved up on costs upfront, where I invested my time and money, and when I knew it was time to hire someone to help me with my business.

As someone with a chronic illness, it makes it harder for me to do the usual stuff people with no chronic diseases do. BUT! I flourish. I make sure that every minute counts with everything I do. And this is something Beth Ruffin and I could agree with.
----more----
Even before being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, Beth had always been an overachiever, something I can 100% relate to. She gives more than 100%, even in her days at a corporate job. She is a writer, coach, TEDx speaker, cultural disruptor, and CEO of The Everyday Inclusionist.
----more----
Her company aims to promote inclusivity in workplaces. Her passion is to share how a woman of colour with a chronic disease can flourish. In addition to that, her mission is to make the world more inclusive. These traits translate into her business and books. Her first book, Get Up, details her journey to self-acceptance. Her second book, You Belong Here, explores the topic of Self Inclusion.
----more----
Want to know more about how Beth is successful even with fibromyalgia? Tune in to this episode and be inspired by these kickass women dominating their industries despite all odds.

I love talking about sales and what I love more is finding people who has the same passion about sales as I do! So, for today’s episode, we have a very special guest, Celia Faye Meisel.
----more----
Celia graduated with a degree in Bachelor of music and jazz studies from The University of Southern Mississippi and got her Masters of Music in Jazz Studies at Northern Illinois University. She is a very talented musician, who knows how to sing and play the saxophone, and then she set out to be a businesswoman after she experienced burnout in 2013. Celia is a 4th generation businesswoman and career entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience as a mentor, trainer, and coach.
----more----
Now, she is a Transformational Trainer at Multifaceted Results, which launched in November 2021 as well as an expert in sales.
----more----
Today, she shares her story on how after a burnout and physically not being able to work anymore shifted her whole life. She learned that listening to her body and prioritizing energy preservation has led her to be an expert in sales.
----more----
We connect by both having chronic illnesses but still thriving in our respective fields. Also, we have the same perspective about everything we go through, we turn it into a lesson that will guide us in building our business better and stronger.

We always hear that if we push too much, we’ll burnout. But what does burnout look like?
----more----
In today’s episode, we have Kelly Swingler on the pod to discuss how she wrote her outstanding book, Mind the Gap. As Kelly and I talk about her journey of shedding light on burnout, she shares her story of quitting corporate life in 2013. Leaving the corporate world was not an easy decision as she thought she’d be in corporate for a long time.
----more----
However, there is something else in store for her. Kelly suffered burnout due to her corporate job to the point where her kids would see her work as something killing her. But that didn’t convince Kelly that she was burnt out right away. After having burnout-related medical emergencies, she realized this isn’t what life is all about.
----more----
Indeed, she loved working, and what she did but this is not worth risking everything, even her life. So, she redirected her life in a way she sees most purposeful but also kept her boundaries intact. This is one of the many things in which we’re on the same page.
----more----
Now, she is an Empowerment Coach to C-Suite and Executive Women and a Burnout Prevention Advisor to Boards and Leadership Teams, author, and podcast host of Core-Led Women. To top it all off, she also teaches yoga once a week!
----more----
Press play and listen to the story of this Wonderwoman and learn what burnout could look like and how you can deal with it or prevent it from happening.

Trigger Warning: Anxiety, Depression, Death
----more----
Let’s pause on the business side and talk about what it’s like to be a mom struggling with postpartum anxiety. For two years, I’ve been dealing with this, and let me tell you now, it’s not easy, but I will share this story with you because that’s what we do here. So, if you’re not ready to listen to this episode because it might trigger you, best skip this for now.
----more----
In this episode, I share stories that are close to my heart. It’s the story about my birthing journey up to now when an accident with Alecia happened that triggered my postpartum anxiety big time. Along with these stories are thoughts passing through my mind as a mom with postpartum anxiety. Some of these thoughts scared me, and there was a time when I thought I would be manifesting these thoughts.
----more----
Fortunately, I found the right support and consulted professionals. If you’re struggling with postpartum anxiety or any mental illness, I promise you it’s 100% okay to ask for help. I also share in this episode how I came about finding the proper support and what I did to make this manageable.
----more----
I still have it, and I’m not sure if and when it will go away, but I am glad that I know now that I AM NOT ALONE, and so are you. I hope this episode helps!

Returning to the basics of business, let's talk about sales! In today's episode, I'll share my experiences with sales and the mistakes you might be making! If you've tuned in to previous episodes, you'll know that I was a salesperson, and my unique skill was creating authentic connections with people.
----more----
Here's the catch with sales, people HATE being sold to, but they LOVE to buy. So, one mistake you might be making with sales is being too "salesy." It sometimes may come off as being too pushy or aggressive – just be natural and listen to what your client needs.
----more----
The next mistake is being afraid of sales simply because not everyone is born to be a salesperson – and that's totally okay! You are a human, and sales is a skill that you need to work on - take your time and learn each moment!
----more----
The third and final mistake is knowing the value of your business – be confident with your product and service, and value it according to your worth.
----more----
Remember, sales is a person-to-person connection more than anything else. It's also a form of leadership – it puts you in charge of calling the shots and knowing the worth of your products and services. So don't be afraid to reach your goals and go make that sale!

So for today's episode, I will share my top secret to having a more organized life as a chronically ill CEO. If you're an avid listener to this podcast, you know how I think and how I have my own organized chaos. This is more of a follow-up episode to Episode 79, where I talked about what my day as a sick CEO looks like.
----more----
So, I decided to talk about braindumping (not the best word to use, but that's what it's called). Some people call it brainstorming, but it's written. Either way, I will discuss that and the whiteboard sticker that made things 10x better! I will share the link below so you can get yours and start living a more organized life.
----more----
Of course, just buying it won't be the end of it. You must religiously use it and make it your guide throughout the month. I share all about my routine in this episode -- from braindumping, how and when I do it, and where I paste my whiteboard to keep me on track.----more----
Listen now to know how I optimize braindumping with the help of a whiteboard sticker, some notebooks, and my phone!

For today's episode I'll be sharing more about my experiences and lessons in life as a CEO and a woman dealing with a chronic illness.
----more----
Before we get to that, I just want to celebrate the first month since the launch of our Youtube channel - yay!! pat on the back for myself and my amazing team
----more----
Since celebrating our first anniversary and the milestones my business and team have accomplished, I just want you all to know more about what goes on in the life of a sick and successful CEO. Ever since being diagnosed with a chronic illness, working corporate, building a business, and starting a family, some things have been tough for me to manage. If we could only put ourselves in many places at different times or do everything all at one - wow, how much easier can life get, right? Sadly, that's not the case sometimes.
----more----
Since I juggle many things in my life as a CEO, I've structured my days with a short guide I keep in mind. This guide may sound simple, but it requires a lot of conscious effort and discipline!
----more----
The first few things in this guide lean towards business matters. You must learn how to set your boundaries or limits, delegate small tasks, and create a flexible schedule with your time. Setting boundaries is quite difficult simply because we always want to give our everything at EVERYTHING. This is where delegating tasks can come in. With small tasks not so requiring your expertise, you can have your team do this and help build the trust between you and your employees. And what happens when you set boundaries and segregate tasks effectively? You can have flexibility with your schedule to have more time and focus on other important things you prioritize – business or family matters.
----more----
After the first three things in my guide being more on the business side, the fourth and fifth ideas are more about the personal side. It's time to focus on you - TAKE CARE of yourself and have a support system along your journey. I know this may sound easy but taking of yourself and seeking out a support group that actually supports you will create these pillars of strength and motivation that will guide and help you on the journey to achieve your dreams. I have an amazing team and the best set of family and friends who constantly remind me to take care of myself and support me. And today, I'm here to remind you business besties that you deserve and NEED that too.

Episode 78 of the Sick and Successful podcast is a short yet important episode. In less than 10 minutes, I'll be sharing with you one of the most important pieces of business advice you may have not considered. I learned my lesson the hard way and hope to share this with you so you don't have to.
I share about one of the hardest experiences I've yet to experience in business and give you tips to avoiding those sames mistakes.
----more----
Having lawyer may not seem important when starting a business I'm telling you, it's crucial. Having written legal contracts with your clients, employees and business partners will save you. The million dollar you thats coming in the future will thank you.
----more----
In this episode, I speak my truth. Let me tell you this – no matter how much you're stepping into your power or duct-taping your business together, don't forget about the legalities and contracts!
----more----
Whether signing new clients, hiring employees, or taking on business partners, contracts will save your butt and your business. It is normal to have conflicts in business, so having a lawyer ensure your doing everything by the book will save you endless amounts of time AND MONEY in the future. When you take the power of a contract lightly, you open yourself up to what I call "untied knots."
----more----
If thing happen in your business (which if your growing they will) and lawyers get involved, always stand up for yourself. Never doubt your gut and intuition because it's often spot on!

Today’s episode on the Sick and Successful podcast is one of the most special ones yet! I’m so excited to celebrate and share with all of you the first year business anniversary of S&S Creative Media! Through all the ups and downs, this journey has been one heck of an amazing roller coaster ride full of experiences and lessons. If nobody has ever told you about the mixed emotions and pressure you’ll be facing when starting a business - I’ll be the one to tell you all that in this episode!
----more----
Building a business has never been easy and leaving the corporate world after 12 years of working wasn’t an easy choice either. Have you ever felt like no matter how much time and effort you gave for work it just never was enough? Like you always thought and said to yourself you can do and achieve so much more? These were just a few of the dilemmas I faced when starting S&S that I look back on today as we celebrate our first anniversary.
----more----
I always dreamed of becoming a successful business woman - and this first year anniversary proves that with passion and stepping into yourself and your powers (also known as faking it til you make it for me) - you can achieve anything.
----more----
I started S&S Creative back in 2021 while on my maternity leave. Like many entrepreneurs, we’re all waiting for the perfect opportunity to discover what kind of business we can succeed in - and the moment I knew I would succeed in this business was when my good friend Danielle asked me to manage her social media page. Right at that moment I knew what I truly wanted to do!
----more----
Apart from all the business success and growth this past year, I still experience struggles with myself.
----more----
I’ll be totally honest and vulnerable - I always had a hard time celebrating my own success, I felt defeated even when business was going great, and at some point, the imposter syndrome was stronger than ever!
----more----
I want to set an example for all the dreamers out there through this episode that you have the potential in you to achieve your dreams - you just need to believe in it and hone it! Learn to celebrate the small wins and learn from the struggles you face - experience is the best lesson in business! I want you to also always remember that you are never alone on your journey and that family and friends are always there to celebrate with you when achieving your success!

What is the point of fearing something we cannot see?
When we face a crossroad or an unexpected change in our lives, we either fight, freeze or take flight. But, typically we also have fear, even if we don’t admit it. Learn to embrace it, instead of fearing it.
----more----
In this episode, Shalinda talks about dealing with the fear of the unknown in her own life. Change is inevitable, the unknowns give us opportunity to grow and change. They allow us to see life through new lenses, and new perspectives.
You have the choice. Are you gunna rip off the Band-Aid and ride the roller coaster or stand back and let the world change around you, while you ask yourself - what if?

Where would you be today if 4 years ago you allowed yourself to dream and started to move toward that dream? Where will you be 4 years from now if you don't change anything? If you keep trying new things and quitting them because they are hard? Or just living life the way it is because you are complacent? Things are "ok" so why would you shake them up right?
