But this book is all about getting women who want to take the leap to feel like they can do it. Our hosts- Sheryl Chen and Mickey Tesfaye, talk to Winnie about what strategies can be employed by both female entrepreneurs and the industry itself to help change the landscape!

What if we misunderstand the value of crypto and where its value is derived?

**When Bill Spence bought a power plant in western Pennsylvania, he wasn’t aiming to become a crypto-pioneer. His thoughts were more local, and more about reviving the communities that he had grown up in.

Western Pennsylvania is at the top of the Appalachian Basin coal region, and coal was mined there, and funneled there to make the steel that built the US, both financially and physically. When the basin had been tapped, mines started being closed, and in the wake they left refuse that poisoned the ground. But even with the subsidies, power plants need customers. And when the pandemic hit, power needs plummeted. Now, there was another mission to save the plant by getting a new customer.

Simon Taylor is one of the most forward thinkers and trusted movers in fintech, and last year when sanctions around SWIFT were announced, he wrote an incredibly clear and compelling explanation in his Fintech Brainfood Substack. One line stood out: “I think as Fintech Nerds, we have a real opportunity to build a better SWIFT and a better dollar global order.”

Since that was written, several events have taken place that puts the dollar as the global currency more in question than ever before- including deals to buy oil with the Chinese Yuan, and movements in digital currencies. So, we need to ask “What do we do about de-dollarization?”

In December 2021, 10 nations and several international institutions participated in a simulation "war game" on the global financial networks.

It was organized and led by the Israeli Ministry of Finance, to anticipate the need for smarter international cooperation to protect systems. We spoke with Rahav Shalom-Revivo, Head of Financial-Cyber Innovation and International Engagements, about the preparation and nature of the simulation, and the key findings that can keep our world safer.  In her words "Collaboration is key in order to be able to make sure that the good guys actually win in the end."

With ChatGPT and its cousins flourishing and fleshing out our imaginations of what AI can do, there is more open scrutiny about the ethics and definitions of AI.   We will be looking to talk more about this in the coming months, but in the meantime, we wanted to revisit an episode that seems even more relevant now.

AI has a ‘black box’ issue and the lack of understanding about how such systems work can raise concerns about opacity, unfair discrimination, ethics and threats to individual privacy and autonomy. Would it be fair/acceptable if in the future AI used your digital identity and social media posts and decided you have very expensive habits and are thus unlikely to repay your debts? The new AI regulation proposed in the EU aims to address these issues by requesting processes to build, audit and safeguard AI systems. We spoke with Ismini Psychoula, Research Scientist at the OneSpann Innovation Center, about the principles behind the new regulations, and how to ensure trustworthiness and fairness in financial services.

Banks today aren't great at innovation, but simply mimicry, because of Conway's Law - “Any organization that designs a system (defined broadly) will produce a design whose structure is a copy of the organization's communication structure. So, what changes in technology would be enough to change the way teams in banks are structured, and thereby the design of the products/services they offer? And does culture mirror technology or does technology mirror culture? We spoke with Karan Oberoi from Backbase, and Nick Cowell from Deloitte Digital to dig out the way banks can re-imagine their systems and therefore reimagine their services. Hint: Mission is central.

Their CEO, Ryan Caldwell, had to step back to pay attention to serious family health issues. Financial services companies are swimming in data, and everyone suspects that the secrets to client satisfaction and increased profits are hidden in it. However, with that much data, the challenge is- how do you organize it into something useful with genuine answers? Something that tells a real story? And can you anyone paint the picture?
Robert Cooke, Founder and CTO of 3Forge can. After working in several financial services companies in a variety of roles, he had a deep understanding of the issues and thought he knew the solution. So- he built it.
3 Forge’s AMI is deployed at three of the five largest global banks, and nearly 20% of global equities flows through the platform. It also provides services to hedge funds, broker-dealers, and other financial services firms. The company is the leading provider of “performance at scale” data management systems.
And all of that journey started at 10…. But we are getting ahead of ourselves.

When Rachel Schneider wrote “The Financial Diaries”, the research uncovered several misconceptions that the financial industry has about the financial lives of the average person. When her research was done and her book was published, the Omidyar Network that had funded the study then presented her with the opportunity to solve one issue that she found in her research. Her answer is Canary, which helps businesses create safety nets for their employees and the communities they live in, and helps smooth over the rough times that inevitably fall in all our lives. I hope you enjoy this episode and may we all have stronger communities and strengthen the ties that bind us together in the new year!

Last month, the fintech universe was set abuzz following the news that A16Z had written its biggest check to date.  But the eye-watering sum wasn't at the heart of the buzz; it was the man behind the raise: Adam Neumann.   Despite allegations of impropriety with his form venture, WeWork, he is trusted by investors once again.  We wanted to dig into the possible reasons why, and how it could be explained by a "survivor bias".   We dig into how survivor bias works, why it is actually systemic, and the harm it does to problem solving.

We are breaking from our typical format because of the intense news that is developing around the crypto markets, and how that is affecting businesses in that sector of the industry. We all know that the price of cryptocurrencies dropped. Bitcoin dove to a year low of $26284. Ethereum dove to $1792. Both seem to be stabilizing, but are very far from their beginning of the year highs. Even bigger are the stories about Luna and TerraUSD. TerraUSD is a stablecoin that is pegged to the USDollar, and managed to fall sharply under the $1 mark dragged down by Luna, which is the sister cryptocurrency. Luna has collapsed. As of this recording on May 12, 2022 at 3pm, it had dropped in value by 99% and is worth a little more than a penny.  This has caused a certain amount of chaos at different crypto businesses, and their consumers.

Today, Sanjib Kalita, Nick Holland, Micky Tesfaye and Rachel Morrissey take a look at whether the nature of cryptocurrency is amenable to sustainable business models,  what type of oversight can crypto exchanges and businesses expect, and what this will mean for private and public stablecoins.

Since banking became mobile, it feels like it should be more intuitive and more automated. Our money should feel easier to use, easier to save and serve us better.   Embedded finance is the beginning of a system where the banking is simply an inherent part of any transaction, and not a belabored afterthought.   And with open banking empowering consumers to own their data, the combination with embedded finance could lead to incredible opportunities in every type of financial transaction.   We spoke with Sanjay Mathew, from Oracle and Mayank Mishra from Citi, about their outlook as they lead clients through the possibilities.

The pandemic rocked retail to the core, and was a time when multiple payments options and omni-channel commerce became vital to survival. Some of the biggest casualties are the mid to large traditional retailers who have declared bankruptcy in record numbers. Their profit margins are being squeezed by the behemoths while a lot of the problem solving has been for small businesses to operate better and smoother. In order to compete, retailers need to be able to move as swiftly as the payments industry, keeping up with new preferences, and experiment with trends. We spoke with John Lunn, CEO and Co-Founder of Gr4vy about creating a solution that allows these retailers to modify their payments stacks, and give retailers much needed flexibility.

Retail investing has never been a hotter space.   During the pandemic, as certain discretionary incomes increased, and apps have made participating in the markets easier, there has been an explosion of interest and activity.   But this has led to a proliferation of meme stocks, and questionable investment activities, none of which are disappearing.   Retail investing has always had a memetic nature, but social media communities about investing are changing the movement of investing information and making it vulnerable to bad sources.     So how do you embrace the openness and create communities that are authentic, creative, and supportive as more people become part of these markets?   We spoke to Stephen Sikes, COO of Public.com to learn more about their embrace of communities and how those communities can be fostered to make investing safer.

Over the past year, both traditional and upstart financial service providers have streamlined and digitized to enable remote workforces and customer experiences. Consumers and society overcame challenges not seen in over a generation. Just as survivors of the Great Depression focused on achieving the necessary with minimal resources, consumers coming out of the pandemic have different expectations and behaviors, shaped by the events of the last two years. The game of leapfrog continues and consumers are now jumping, leading to category growth in neo-banking, crypto-investing, mobile financial services and new lending and payment schemes.

Money20/20’s sister company, WGSN, helps predict future consumer trends and behavior for product design , and they have identified the consumer sentiments that will shape how your future consumers feel, and mapped these sentiments into the four consumer profiles that will shape the world around us in 2023. In this special, we spoke with Andrea Bell, Director of Insights, about her teams expertise and research to identify four predominant trends in future consumers, and we discuss what financial services and tech will be prime for their engagement.

Beyond what to expect of your future consumer in how they’ll feel and behave, Future Consumer 2023 provides invaluable foresight on what people will want and demand, providing you with the knowledge you need to create the services and strategies of tomorrow. For an industry that prioritizes customer experience, knowing what consumers want is essential in taking a proactive approach to meet consumer demands.

Welcome to the future!

The proponents of embedded finance have coined the phrase "Every Company Is a Fintech Company", and they are betting that the majority of all companies in the future will have financial services as part of their offerings.   And while money has always been a large influence in every industry, this will give finance and the tools of finance more power to change things than ever before.  As we are confronting the need for diversity,  the opportunities for financial inclusion, and rethinking the problems around every basic institution,  we need authenticity to guide us.   With the help of Amy Nauiokas, CEO and Co-Founder of Anthemis Group, we sift through some of the arguments around how to think about the growing fintech ecosystem and the expansion of financial services.

Open finance is gearing up to change the way that financial products are developed and delivered.   For example, payroll data underpins almost all retail financial products.   Having better, cleaner, faster access to that data could change the way financial risk is assessed.   So, what has kept us from using it before? - cost, privacy, speed, verified accuracy, and technological capability.   But, all of that could be set to change according Kurt Lin, the Co-Founder and CEO of Pinwheel,  the API for payroll.

NFTs have been the buzz in the air, but it seems like there is enduring confusion about what an NFT is and what it does. So, we thought- could we walk in the pioneering footsteps of the Kings of Leon, and make an audio episode about making an NFT into an NFT?

So we did! AND, in the process we made episode art and a song about what else?- NFTs.

And you can bid on it here!: https://opensea.io/collection/moneypot-podcast All of our proceeds will go to a charity that we will be announcing next week!

“This Episode is an NFT” features Rob Wells, a photographer dabbling his own toes in NFTs. He takes our team through creating an NFT, and in the process we learn what an NFT is, the history of NFTs, the current fervor, and how they solve a genuine issue.

Sanjib Kalita, Editor-in-Chief, Money20/20
Roland Bodenham, Senior Video Editor and Singer/Songwriter, Ascential
Jonathan Tobias, Video Editor, Digital Artist, GenZ NFT Enthusiast, Ascential
Rachel Morrissey, Producer, media nerd-in-residence, Money20/20

And Rob Wells, Photographer and NFT guide. By the way- Satoshi the Redeemer, the artwork Rob talks about in the episode can be found here

What is an NFT?
NFT stands for Non-fungible token, unlike crypto-currencies, which are fungible tokens. Fungible tokens, or assets, have units that can be readily interchanged, like a currency. Just as a dollar can be broken down to 4 quarters, cryptocurrencies have units. Non-fungible assets have unique properties that don’t allow for interchange without damaging the value. It would be similar to cutting up a Picasso, which would render a multi-million dollar painting worthless.

In our digital world, new digital properties are being created every day. And unlike copying a Picasso, copying digital files is widely available and doesn’t necessarily diminish their quality. So, how can you protect your ownership and the rights around your digital assets when scarcity drives the value? Never sharing it is not a real solution. Being able to “tokenize” it allows for verification of ownership and enhances the ability to sell digital assets.

But NFTs aren’t only for digital assets. Tokens can represent art, cars, real estate, trading cards, digital trading cards, gamer paraphernalia, music, books. It can represent anything in the real world or digital worlds that is of value. There are even people who have tokenized themselves… but that is a whole episode unto itself.

The current rage is trading cards, game cards, sports cards, memes, and some digital art. It has some big supporters in the likes of Logan Paul, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Mark Cuban.

Artists of all stripes have been looking into how they might use it. As we mentioned, Kings of Leon released an album on it. And Beeple, a digital artist, was able to use it to sell his artwork through Christies for the healthy sum of $69,000,000.
While the enthusiasts admit that it feels slightly like a bubble, they don’t believe that it will burst. Only time will tell if it collapses or if it simply deflates down to a more realistic size. Either way, we have thrown our hat in the ring to see what happens. We hope you enjoy it, bid on it, and help us help others. And again, all of our proceeds will go to a charity that we will be announcing next week!

For grim reasons, the estate planning business boomed during the early days of the pandemic. Access demanded a completely digital approach that allowed for highly informed decision making and legally binding documentation. But there is another barrier that needs to be broken- the notion that Wills and Planning are only for wealthy people and white people. Did you know that Aretha Franklin died without a will? Why would a woman that empowered not have something so many consider part of basic financial planning? One word- TRUST. Research shows that fintech is building trust with minority communities, particularly the black community. As the followers of  /WallStreetBets, a subReddit group, took the unprecedented action of retail investors squeezing the hedge fund shorts of GameStop stock, it set the entire world buzzing.   In the process, RobinHood, an investing app and one of fintech's unicorns became inadvertently squeezed a bit as well.   Due to some great investor relations, RobinHood gathered the capital to be able to keep doing business, but they were dinged a bit in the process.   Some of this was their fault.  Some of it wasn't.   We are putting out this emergency episode with Sanjib Kalita and Rachel Morrissey discussing this from a fintech point of view and wondering whether this "crowd squeeze" means a new type of digital disruption?

Right now, there is an assumption that the US is drastically behind in developing the open banking standards necessary to widespread adoption. The EU, with PSD2, has a strong consumer centric standard, meant to give users more privacy and control of their data and requiring banks to share the data wealth. But, open banking is growing rapidly in the US, despite the lack of a regulator led standard. It takes sixty-six to create a new habit or change a behavior. As the lockdowns continue, consumers have been forced to adopt technology much faster. Grocery store online ordering has skyrocketed, with 41% first time customers. As the economy re-opens, will these behaviors stick? As the virus has hit globally, over 170 countries are facing recessions. With shrinking budgets and worries, consumers are being incredibly practical and careful. A compelling digital presence is now essential in the post-covid world, and those that look at these problems early will have the best chance of claiming a share of a shrinking market. Those that recognize this as an opportunity to reshape their channels, reimagine their offerings, and reposition their business by reallocating for digital transformation and success will be the ones to thrive.

The challenges of COVID-19 present opportunities to innovate and confront complex issues. Where do individual rights end and societal protection begin? What are the tradeoffs between privacy and national security when literally millions of lives are at risk? Thankfully, we don’t have to make that choice. Riddhiman Das, founder of Triple Blind, has created technology that preserves privacy while still enabling appropriate actions based on data and algorithms that remain encrypted. On the treatment side of the COVID-19 equation, we explored another exciting initiative with Mike Froman, from Mastercard. The Mastercard Impact Fund is teaming with the Gates Foundation and Wellcome, to create the COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator, focused on finding treatments and vaccines.

Until recently, M&A bankers were like cooks in the kitchen cooking up hotter and hotter deals. With recent deals like Visa buying Plaid, Intuit buying Credit Karma, and Lending Club buying Radius Bank, many anticipated a banner year of deals that would be a prime force to reshape the industry. But COVID-19 forced the cooks out of the kitchen and cooled down formerly red hot valuations. Now, as we are socially distancing, we are looking at the earlier deals, and project what the kitchen will be like the rest of the year.

Venture capital is pouring into African markets and over 60% of all investments are in fintech. While the main driver for most investment is financial inclusion, it is important to understand that Africa isn't a single market. It is several markets, with vast cultural differences and over 3,000 languages. And the fintech ecosystems are developed on completely different technologies than Asian or LATAM markets. We talked to Johan Bosini and Kofo Agbage from Quona Capital about what investors need to know to enter the VC scene and when and where the innovation is growing fastest.

Sustainability is more than the latest buzz word. It is a value that is permeating every industry as the realities of climate change are becoming more apparent. In financial services, new questions around how sustainability should affect our spending and investing are making deep inroads. Many banks are creating earth-friendly investment funds, and firms like BlackRock Investors have announced that they will divest from all thermal coal exposure, and will take active measures to help companies that are part of their profile to go green. This is extremely appealing to younger generations who want to invest in brands and ideas that match their values. On this episode, we spoke to Andrei Cherney, CEO of Aspiration bank about programs they have to help their customers know where their money goes, and about the greater trend toward values based banking and investing.

Women of the millennial generation are all about taking control. They entered the job market, saddled with debt, and in the shadow of the financial crisis. In order to make finance less scary, they share and use a memetic code to communicate. Financial Services that understand that code could truly connect with younger customers in powerful ways.

Fintech's altruistic side has been best captured in financial inclusion- understanding the needs and desires of underserved communities. But, lately there is a new focus on Financial Health. The middle class is being squeezed. It has always been expensive to be poor. Now it is expensive to be an American. This episode is all about fostering the solutions to the middle class crunch and why VC's are looking at solutions to promote health as much as inclusion.

As Money20/20 looks to next year, we have some ideas about the trends, topics, and expectations that 2020 will bring to the industry. 2020 is going to be a year of acquisitions, rebundling and big tech. In fact, it has already begun! Challenger banks have been making strides in customer acquisition but have struggled to create profitable business models. Meanwhile, the big tech companies are coming: Google is partnering with Citibank, Apple is offering credit, Facebook just launched Facebook Pay and is working to develop Calibra, and Uber has created its own money accounts to enhance driver loyalty. It’s clear that established players are branching out to bring banking services into their portfolios. Take Wealthfront and Betterment for example, established as investing firms utilizing AI they have launched into the checking and savings account space. Loan giant SoFi keeps expanding, creating hybrid accounts and most recently obtaining a BitLicense to offer crypto trading to its customers.
Will challenger banks be able to keep afloat in the market? Will they be acquired? And as the great rebundling begins, will it be banks vs. tech or banks partnering with tech?

The global financial system is broken. It has to run on so many rails, that it suffers from severe inefficiencies, incongruency, and higher costs. With 2-3 billion financially underserved people, the need to create smoother rails that would lower costs and make banking simpler and more affordable was once a pipe dream. But with the promise of a huge market opportunity, the hopes of enabling a smoother and more equitable financial system, and the technology available to make, what was once only imagined, possible, the race is on to see who will re-design the system first!  Today, we speak with Shamir Karkal, Founder of Sila, about why the race is already on!

Fresh from our post conference hiatus, we are back, producing fresh content and sharing some of the more pertinent moments from our stages! And now we are weekly and global!

During the Money 20/20 conference, there was a lot of chatter about stablecoins and Facebook's Calibra project and we couldn't wait to share with you some of the insights.
First, you will hear from Shamir Karkal's (Founder, Sila) presentation, “3 Predictions and a Bet “, about why a project like Calibra is necessary, inevitable and finally, possible!
Next, you hear from a panel with Rachel Mayer (Director of Product, Circle) and John Muller (Head of Legal, Calibra) about why stablecoins are edging out earlier cryptocurrencies and how they can disrupt the problems more than they disrupt the whole system. They also outline the early goals of the Libra Association and the Calibra project.
And lastly, we give you a taste of the mainstage session with Money 20/20’s Scarlett Sieber and David Marcus, (Head of Facebook Messenger. the Head of the controversial and exciting Calibra project at Facebook. David explains why Facebook is the organization to take on a project this size, and why trusting Facebook isn't the real question.

We hope you enjoy a taste of the conference and we will return with a regular episode next week!
