Science matters. Genesis matters. GenZs have been marked as the most anxious depressed, suicide-ideation-prone, atheistic generation in the history of the nation. The vast majority, almost 50 million, are taught in secular schools where the truth and beauty of God's word has been stripped from the foundations of education. It wasn't always this way. A destructive seed was planted 60 years ago that has taken root in American soil. Children are now taught a false "science" that ignores the overtly verifiable facts of Creationism, the truth of scripture. As a result, they are hopeless, adrift without an anchor. Join Dr. Lisa Dunne as she interviews one of CVCU's favorite scientists, Paleobiochemist Dr. Brian Thomas, and gain some practical resources to help those in your realm of influence see the truth, purpose, and hope embedded in God's design. The tragic martyrdom of Charlie Kirk is yet another example of the horrific fallout of institutions that have falsely claimed to be ramparts of critical thinking and free speech. Instead, the sociocultural conditioning of soul-less, values-free, truth-deficit education has spawned a generation of hedonism and lawlessness. Join Dr. Lisa Dunne on this week's episode as she shares her experience as a speaker at Turning Point and as a college professor for 25 years. If we want a better America, we must start by facing the brokenness of this one. Universities must recognize and repent for the role they've played in silencing free speech, in undermining critical thought, and in severing parental support in the scholastic process. Education is broken. We can fix it. May we continue to carry on the Charlie's courageous legacy of confronting and exposing the darkness in high places in public university campuses--of defeating the darkness with dialogue. Charlie's mission existed because a generation before him allowed the Great Commission to be outlawed on our watch. It's time to take it back.

Join me on this week's show for an interview with Pastor Josiah Elias, the lead pastor of Faith Chapel in Spring Valley, California. Pastor Josiah and his wife Ashley are devoted to discipleship. They want to see believers develop into wholehearted followers of Jesus, and they understand that discipleship begins in the home, in the early years of our children's walk with the Lord. They recognize the weighty mandate that the local church carries to equip and encourage parents in discipling their kids, and that as believers, we can't just look the other way when an entire generation is steeped in anxiety, depression, and atheism. Fear. Depression. Anxiety. Suicide ideation. How do we respond to the needs of what is now being called "the anxious generation"? According to the Center for Disease Control, over 1.5 million kids under the age of 17 take anti-anxiety medication, and 61% of college students are struggling with anxiety, according to the American Psychological Association. What are the physiological, psychological, social, and spiritual roots of these oppressive conditions? Join Dr. Lisa for part 3 of the High Anxiety series as she examines causes, effects, and considerations for raising a generation of emotion-regulating champions. Parents, you're not alone. There is hope for the next generation--and for our own generations--if we lean in to the wisdom of God's word. Education is discipleship. Who is discipling your children, and what habits of the heart are being construed as normal or necessary? Let's not conform to the pattern of this world; let's instead be transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we can know God's good and perfect and pleasing will. You've got this!

The average 4 year-old-child asks 437 questions a day. Their developmental stage of epistemic curiosity leads them to think, to wonder, to imagine, to search for the why. Part 2: Every movement has a history, a moment in time where visionaries and pioneers stepped out and refused to part of the status quo. Before the Industrial Era, homeschooling was the common modality of the masses. But for over 150 years, children were pulled from the home, educated en masse, and treated as cogs in a machine. That was, until 1978, when across the US, pockets of "family schools" suddenly began popping up, unbeknownst to one another. One such "family schooler," Colonel Ray Moore, tells his story on part one of this show. He is considered to be the founder of what we know today as the modern homeschool movement. Learn about the history, the sacrifice, and his current work with Public School Exit and Exodus Mandate.

"Children enter school as questions marks," Neil Postman chastised, "and they leave school as periods." What is happening in the scholastic environment to crush intrigue? Developmentalists have shown that children have what is known as epistemic curiosity, a need for understanding. But when they enter a traditional school environment, their question rate drops from one every two minutes to less than one every two hours. Modern education is not inspiring curiosity; it's undermining it, silencing it. Join Dr. Dunne on today's show as we unpack the value of a question, and learn how you can stoke the fires of curiosity by utilizing the Socratic method with your children, grandchildren, college students, and employees. In the 1960s, a phrase was circulated on public television as a result of rising crime in the city: "It's 10pm. Do you know where your children are?" The PSA was supposed to alert parents to check in on their kids and make sure they were safe. Today, the question is a sobering reminder for public school parents. "Do you know where your children are?" In today's interview, Pacific Justice Institute President Brad Dacus shares about an alarming public school trend: students in government education centers are being taken from their homes after confiding in a teacher or guidance counselor about some point of disagreement with a parent. Did you know that there is a language protein, FOXP2, that signals the brain to higher levels of chatter? America's education system is broken. We know this instinctively because we see the fruit: low academic performance. Functional illiteracy. Skyrocketing rates of anxiety and depression. An anti-faith, anti-family environment. Many parents are contemplating their kids' scholastic futures, dreading the ramifications of public education but sickened (rightly so) by the cost of private education. Are these polar extremes the only hope for the next generation? Before you make that next big academic decision, consider the impact of the educational ecosystem on our mental, relational, and spiritual health, and ask your family some tough questions: Are you in an allegiance with Truth? Are you pursuing kingdom objectives? Or are you simply adding volume to the clanging gong of popular opinion? HR 5, the Parents Bill of Rights, which just passed in the House, intends to require greater transparency between schools and parents. But just as parents' eyes were opened in 2020 when they walked into their children's rooms and heard the socio-political nonsense being taught through Zoom, HR 5 should give parents a sobering view of what is really happening in government school classrooms--and what secrets are being kept from parents. Homeschooling provides parents the tremendous luxury of time. While our academic counterparts are often stuck in the scholastic rat race that keeps them "studying" in school for 7 hours a day and then checking off homework boxes another 3 hours each night, homeschoolers have the grand freedom of learning through relationship and discussion for a fraction of that time period (and the scores to prove the model works). But it isn't time alone that creates the relationship, the bond, the power of the model. Have you ever heard of Piaget’s American Question? Swiss developmental psychologist Jean Piaget (1896- 1980) is credited with being the first researcher to theorize that young children process information in a completely different manner from adults. Students were living in their cars while amassing a 130K debt they would never be able to repay. Recently, California's parents rejoiced when mask mandates were lifted in public schools across the state. But the school system's virtue signaling effort is just a superficial attempt at winning back public trust. It doesn't change the root or the fruit of public education. Today, that seed has produced a harvest: the most anxious, depressed, atheist generation in the history of America. Social science research is often bad news before it is good news. When we look at the rates of depression, anxiety, and identity confusion in the youngest generation, we see some common catalysts for this generational belief and behavior. The youngest generations lack the trust and security that comes from a secure base. They have significantly low resilience levels (hence the snowflake moniker) and dangerously low emotion regulation levels. Many of these generational shortcomings could be turned around with the healing of attachment. God is the father of redemption, of hope. He doesn’t leave us stranded and victimized, hopelessly awaiting the exit lane of life. Through his marvelous design of neural plasticity, he gives us the opportunity to grow, change, develop, and heal throughout our lifetimes.  And as Barna says, the younger generation is “largely the product of the unaddressed dysfunctions of the generations that came before them...a generation that has inherited a cultural war zone but not the tools to bring peace to that war.” What can we do to turn the tide? Join Dr. Lisa Dunne as we address the tried-and-true steps to family renewal.

“Learn not the way of the nations,” Jeremiah 10:1 says, “for the customs of the people are vanity.” We don’t hear the word vanity much in common culture today. The word vain, hebel, means empty, unsatisfactory. Certainly, we have all met people who typify this adjective, whose appearance may be radiant but whose minds are vacant. The customs of the people means here their manner, their statute, their ordinance. The vacant minded not only model their own mental vacancy and disconnect from logical, critical thinking; they expect others to bow to their ordinances, their statutes.

This is not the intended path of the Christian. Believers are to walk in the ancient path, the eternal highway. Philippians 3:13 says that we are to walk by the same rule and mind (pay attention to) the same thing. Galatians 5:25 says that we are to walk in the spirit. We must pay careful attention today to any “ways of the nations” that may be trying to encroach on our beliefs or behaviors. Instead, we must resist the customs and vanities of this world and keep our eye focused on the prize of the high calling that propels us onward.

An intruder has loomed on the horizon for decades, slowly inching its way toward our homes, toward the hearts of our children. A handful of educational prophets have called out into the wind throughout the last century, but parents have either looked the other way or stomped their feet at the enemy, hoping a carnal tactic would give them advantage in a decidedly spiritual battle. Today, the fallout is clear. Students lack the self-government that is derived from a healthy parent-oriented attachment and are driven instead by a modality of peer orientation. Their lives are void of opportunities for intergenerational wisdom, correction, encouragement, discipleship. Join Dr. Lisa Dunne as she unpacks another toxic trait of the public school system: the annihilation of self-government through an insidious attachment to peers.

There are many powerful reasons for breaking free of the toxic teachings of traditional education. And it's not only about the overtly soul-less content found in the public system. As Ken Ham has pointed out, many of today's Christian schools are also failing to produce thinkers, doers, disciples. More often than not, according to Ham's research, Christian schools have simply mirrored the methodologies and ideologies of the secular system. They walk like a public school, talk like a public school, and think like a public school. They’re like a secular textbook with an “I Heart Jesus” bumper sticker slapped on the front cover. And why? Because most of the teachers went to secular institutions and are simply parroting the information and methodology they absorbed in their own humanistic classrooms. Instead of creating a spirit of wonder and gratitude--two emotions that should fuel the transformative experience of learning--modern classrooms are stifling creativity and impeding the Great Commission. As Neil Postman puts it, education and school have become mutually exclusive. If we want to positively influence the trajectory of today's students, it’s time to take back the reins. The next generation needs active, engaged mothers and fathers to lead them to greatness. The future is family. Join Dr. Lisa Dunne this week to learn what we can do to get involved and to equip those in our realm of influence to free the captives and help the next generation find hope, purpose, and direction. As a nation, we have wasted an extraordinary amount of time and resources in the public sector trying to fix a broken system. As John Taylor Gatto says, "Over the years of wrestling with the obstacles that stand between child and education, I have come to believe that government monopoly schools are structurally unreformable. They cannot function if their central myths are exposed and abandoned." A better question would be how can we rescue parents who want out of government indoctrination centers but feel trapped? What responsibility can the local church take to help parents who believe they are unable to homeschool? How can we sponsor them, support them, come alongside them, and make what seems impossible possible for them? What can we do, individually and corporately, to help free the captives? Join Dr. Lisa Dunne for this week's episode as she shares about her experience in helping parents get free, and learn more about her work at AwakenAcademySD.com and CVCU.us. The weight of responsibility for the mental, emotional, physiological, and spiritual health of the next generation rests squarely on the shoulders of the Christian community. And if are more afraid of offending someone than of speaking the truth that might save them from destruction, then we may just be standing on the wrong side of the dividing line between the sheep and the goats.

At this point, most parents (at least in California), have awakened to the generational fallout from the public school indoctrination centers. They know it's time to make a change. But what if life is complicated? What if there are job requirements or single-parent households? Does homeschooling demand a 24/7 modality of education? One of the most frequent questions we get from parents is about that balance: Can I work AND homeschool? This question often stems largely from a misconception about what homeschooling is and is not. Home-based, parent-directed education means just that: the parent chooses the subjects, the people, and the process that will best serve the needs of the child. The parent is in the driver's seat--not the school board, not the secular state.  Join Dr. Dunne on this week's show for an interview with new homeschooling mom Hillary Hebert, who has learned the secret of juggling these multiple variables and is now a walking testimony of the positively transformative nature of the  homeschooling movement.

The generation coming after GenZ, Alphas, are predicted to be one of the largest global generations in history. Based on their training, habits, and incessant exposure to the world's values, they will be the most educated, the most sophisticated, and, if we don't turn the tide, the most liberal generation of all time. There is a constant battle for control of their consumer patterns, their social beliefs, even their souls. This fight for power has crossed the threshold of the home, the school, the government, and the marketplace. Whose children are they? Do they belong to the state or to the parent? Join Dr. Lisa Dunne for this week's episode as we unpack the signs and seasons of the battle for generational jurisdiction. What does history teach us? What political pressures are increasing today, and what difference does education make? Mass media consumption has a predictable, calculable impact on a significant portion of the population. Knowing its potential pitfalls should propel us to small changes (or perhaps sweeping ones) in our mass media consumption. In this final episode of the Media Literacy season, Dr. Dunne reminds us of the individual and collective impact of media on our sense of self, our identity formation, giving us the clarity we need to live free from the manipulation of a culture that is constantly cocooned by media. Discover some practical tools for those in your realm of influence as you learn the secrets of monitoring media intake and filtering false content. Cultures do not improve with inertia. It takes the sustained and collective efforts of courageous men and women to direct the course of history. May we all have the boldness we need to step out and speak up for the sake of the next generation. Our identities, and theirs, may depend on it.

Who are you? How did you become the person you are today? In a mass-media centric world, this is an increasingly vital question. We are not only a biological bundle of genetically-inherited traits; we are also the product of our surroundings. We become like the company we choose to keep. Whether it’s a physical friend or a virtual one, our beliefs and our behaviors are fashioned by the voices to whom we give the power of influence. In this episode, Dr. Dunne analyzes the modern-day Ahithophels, a generation of people whose lack of emotion regulation and positive relational influence has led them to a pathway of despair, comparison, hopelessness, fear. Discover the steps we can take in a media-central culture to remain rooted, grounded, and anchored in Christ. The identity of a generation, and a future nation, is at stake.

If you’ve ever been trapped in a paradigm, emerged from it, and then looked back in retrospect at the folly of deception, you have probably experienced a sense of amazement that you could have been so incredibly misled, so convincingly deceived by something so unreal. Many people today live in similarly problematic paradigms, caught up in a world that is more of an invasive  illusion than a true representation of reality. There are imaginary definitions and pressures and imaginary milestones and deadlines and imaginary audiences and expectations.  It’s a world of illusion and delusion, one that mass media defines and dictates: a handful of owners parroting the same narratives,  applauding the same mediocrity, prescribing the same cures, consuming the same fare. Like our food intake, a media diet should be managed through portion control and nutrient density. Too much “dangerous nonsense” will skew the behavioral scale. To be effective, media use needs to be tempered, purposeful, and contemplative in nature, for its consumption is capable of directing the outcome of our lives: What we meditate on, we believe, and what we believe, we become. Join Dr. Lisa Dunne as she provides pathways for breaking free of mass media's problematic paradigms.

The wisest man in history, King Solomon, once said that humans become like the company we keep.  Put another way, "We are the sum total of the five people we spend most of our time with."  Now, parents are defensively aware of any stranger who might try to befriend their son or daughter, but what if the company kids keep is virtual, online, invisible to the eye? Does it still have power? Most definitely. In fact, media's ubiquitous presence is altering our behaviors, changing our families, and radically transforming our culture. As former MIT dean Lester Thurow said, "Values are not, and will not be, inculcated by the family, the church, or other social institutions in either the present or the future. They are and will be, inculcated by the visual and electronic media."  What can we do to combat this full-scale inculcation? Join Dr. Lisa Dunne as we learn how and when to pull the plug, to press the off button, and to find ways to turn down the volume on mainstream media's instant influencer status.

The benefits of connection are well known. From emotional to social to spiritual to physiological health, connection with other people influences our health at the macro and micro levels. However, it seems that there is a concerted effort today to isolate people from one another. After months of quarantine, California's governor even declared that families couldn't gather for Thanksgiving inside their homes, and if they decided to join together in the cathartic act of singing, they should wear a mask and sing softly. But this is not the only arena where isolation is becoming the norm. The foundations our children form in childhood and their teen years will influence the way they act and interact, the way they work and play, the way they think and speak and vote. The influences we surround ourselves with will foster the beliefs and behaviors that determine the ultimate outcome of our lives.

In the classic children's story The Emperor's New Clothes, two swindlers trick an entire village into pretending they don't see reality. Fearful of looking foolish before their fellow villagers, the men and women go along with the elaborate hoax, playing on the vanity of the emperor and their own pride. Instead of blowing the whistle, the villagers remain stuck in groupthink, creating a storyline that has been translated into 100 languages. Unlike the villagers, many of us do understand that we are called to be truth-tellers, that we are commissioned to be culture-shapers, that we are compelled to break toff the chains of deception in this generation. As historian Peter Burke says, "Change is often the result of conflict." Join Dr. Lisa Dunne as we learn how to break free off the fear of man so we can rise up, speak up, and deliver the truth that will set people free.

Are we influenced by the company we keep? Do we absorb ideologies, lifestyles, beliefs, and behaviors through the process of repeated exposure to specific constructs? Join me for this week’s podcast as we unpack classical conditioning, conspicuous consumption, and the “coddling of the American mind.” In their insightful book by the same title, Lukianoff and Haidt assess the collective decline of civic discourse that has resulted in absolute mayhem in colleges around the nation. We’ve lost the collective ability to be sharpened or challenged by a thought that differs from our own, to agree to disagree. Instead, we make provisions for “safe space” bubbles that perpetuate the “childified adult” formula. But humans do not become mature, thoughtful, respectful, engaged, critically-thinking citizens by lying in a fetal position with our fingers in our ears. Baby-proofing the culture has led only to the rise of immaturity, of offense, of ideo-ophobia. How did we get here? And how do we get free? In 605 BC, an Old Testament warrior experienced some intense trauma. Over the span of his life, he was captured, relocated, renamed, indoctrinated, and threatened with violent death. He could have been bitter about his captivity, angry about his sentence, livid about his separation from home, but instead, he determined to live a life set apart--even in the midst of total cultural indoctrination. As a result, those around him had the courage they needed to stand firm on the battle lines. Not only did God meet them in the fiery furnace, but they escaped the heat without compromise in their heart of the smell of smoke on their bodies. The same can be true for us. Join Dr. Lisa Dunne as we explore the neural and sociological pathways that lead us bravely through the darkened hallways of trauma and on to truth, courage, and consecration.

Our social surroundings dramatically influence our paradigms. From our early childhood experiences to our educational systems to our social relationships, our brains are shaped to make automatic decisions on the paradigms we've adopted over the course of our lives. Will we seek vengeance or forgiveness? Will we seek division or unity? These responses, these actions, stem largely from beliefs we have absorbed from the context, culture, and cohort in which we are immersed. Our beliefs determine our behavior; thus, if we want to act wisely into those decisions, we need to become intentional about our strategic communication, both internal and external. How do we make a determination to step across that line and renew our minds? Find out on this week's episode of The Communication Architect!

Many of us try to find our worth, value, identity, and purpose in external identities, but the health of our interpersonal relationships really depend on facing an alternate truth: we will never be able to maintain healthy relationships with others if we do not first possess a healthy sense of self. Breaking the paradigm on fierce independence, this episode explains the socio-emotional base for vulnerability, demonstrating how our natural human insufficiencies are designed to draw us outside of ourselves, connecting us to others sociologically, biochemically, and generationally. There is freedom in our frailty.
