The mentorship program, named the "Spiritual Warrior Program", is built around the idea of teaching men how to be men. Hussain justifies the need for such a program by explaining the masculinity crisis and its rippling effects. He introduces us to the archetypes of masculinity: king, magician, warrior and lover, and their shadow forms, detailing their characteristics and core aspects. This week our host Salim invites Dr Wafaa Eltantwy and Habeeb Akande to speak about sex and intimacy in Islam. They talk about the perception of sex in Muslim communities, looking at the existing taboo and the harm it perpetuates, and where it originated. Habeeb and Dr Wafaa both stress the importance of sex education, how it's lacking, and how important it is to address it. They highlight some of the things that we, as a community, are doing wrong, and how these contribute to a detrimental cycle that only hurts us in the long run. The conversation touches on Habeeb's book 'A Taste of Honey', the perceived separation between sensuality and spirituality, and the paramountcy of communication,  opening the door on this all-too-important topic and taking those first steps towards shedding the taboo.

Dr Wafaa is a gynaecologist, counsellor and therapist. She is an expert in psychosexual & relationship therapy, whilst also being a GMC licensed medical doctor with extensive clinical experience in sexual medicine. Habeeb Akande is an alumnus of Al Azhar University in Cairo. He is a British-born writer, sex educator and historian of Nigerian descent. He is also the author of A Taste of Honey, which looks at Sexuality and erotology in Islam, amongst several other books around this subject matter.  -- The Muslim Vibe has launched a new podcast! This week our host Salim invites on five guests for a roundtable talk, this time to discuss Black History Month. He invites sisters Hafsa and Naima, and brothers Hamza, Hashim and Ibrahim to share their experiences of being both Black and Muslim. They discuss the idea of the "Black Muslim" identity, where it started and where it's headed, how it's transformed over time. Drawing from this, they look at the "Black Muslim" narrative and how, despite it's rising popularity, it remains underrepresented, and the impact that this has. They look at this identity, sharing what it means for each of them, sharing their personal experiences and how they each "came in" to this identity, and what its come to mean for them. The conversation winds to a close as they discuss the default experiences that come part and parcel with being black and Muslim, what they mean, and what the takeaway should be.

This week our host Salim speaks to Sahar Al-Faifi, who describes herself as a "molecular biologist by training and an activist by passion". Sahar is running to be a Plaid Cymru Senedd Member - a member of the Welsh parliament - and in this discussion, we gain some more insight into her reasons and motivations, as well as some of her thoughts and beliefs. She speaks on institutionalised Islamophobia and its effects, how it trickles down into the daily norm, the normalised toxicity of politics, the harmful rhetoric that is more and more widespread, and how being visibly Muslim and wearing the niqab plays into her political and personal identity. Should she be successful, she would be the first niqabi member of a European parliament, and in this conversation she shares why this is long overdue. As she explains, struggle is a catalyst in crossing these boundaries, and now is more paramount a time than ever to rise up and be heard.

This week, Salim shares the mic with Rukshana as they co-host this episode of the TMV podcast. They speak to Dr Suriyah Bi, PhD, on the topic of equality, but from a new perspective. Dr Bi does share her stories on how she has been personally affected by discrimination, but she also shares with us the facts on the gap Muslims are trying to bridge from an academic point of view. Combining her life experiences with her line of research, Suriyah delves into the topic of inequality, touching on social mobility, islamophobia, positive discrimination and more. The discussion addresses how the minority communities play their roles as well, as Suriyah speaks on how she's found more support externally, and how she's, witnessed in some instances, a mentality that does not value education for women. The conversation takes us through many twists and turns as they begin to unpack the heavy subject that is equality and diversity, or a lack of, thereof.

The festival, held virtually for all of October, was started by Naima B Robert in the wake of the upsurge that the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement has seen over the summer. The idea has been to invite guests from all backgrounds, from poetry to comedy to entrepreneurship, to come together in this festival to celebrate Black Muslims. Our guests discuss this topic in the context of the BLM movement, touching on what it means to celebrate our identity and why it’s important to do so. The conversation also addresses the All Lives Matter (ALM) movement, internalised prejudice, and just the general discomfort that can come from tackling these issues head-on. Our guests invite you to embrace this discomfort, to let it show you areas to focus on within yourself. They encourage everyone to attend some of the events, and hopefully we’ll all be better for it. — To learn more about the Black Muslim Festival, visit https://themuslimvibe.com/western-muslim-culture/upcoming-online-festival-to-celebrate-black-muslim-heritage-for-black-history-month-a-chance-to-learn-celebrate-and-give Want to hear more from Nabil? This week, our host Salim speaks to William, a sociologist, about the issues we face on a community level. They dive into an exploration of the notions of "whiteness" and "meta-colonialism", and how they affect every one of us, in every day of our lives. William uses personal anecdotes to highlight how these concepts pervade our society, even today. The conversation then turns to the British establishment and how it has impacted the Muslim communities, commenting on the "don't make waves, make money" narrative and how it shapes our behaviours. Their discussion then winds down, approaching how to combat this system that preys on pushing this "ideal Muslim" model, giving examples of the influential Muslims who do so and how we can too.

This week our host Salim speaks to Ali, The Soulful Poet, about poetry in the context of Islam. The conversation opens with a series of poems Ali wrote over the course of Ramadhan and quickly moves to talk about the miracle of the poetry that comprises the Qur'an. Touching on hip-hop, the discussion delves into why the genre draws the appeal that it does, and putting forth the notion that if we began to look at the Qur'an in a different light, perhaps we would be able to draw more meaning from the words that have been arranged so artfully within it.

This week Salim speaks to Zohra Khaku, Director of the Muslim Youth Helpline. She talks about mental health and the growing struggles that youth are facing, especially now, and how MYH tries to play a role in tackling that. They discuss how the taboo around mental health has weakened over time, and how we can continue to normalise the talking about and getting help for it. Lastly, the conversation moves towards the topic of addiction, with Zohra mentioning how the number of behavioural addiction cases has grown past that or substance addiction over the years. Winding down, they note that ultimately, whilst we must acknowledge the progress we have made in destigmatising mental health, we've still got quite a ways to go.

Ultimately, the discussion leaves us facing the simple truth: to attain anything, you have to put in the work. There is no easy road, there is no secret trick, and there is no shortcut.

This week we invite Berak Hussain back on the podcast to speak on a topic she feels passionately about - domestic abuse. Berak is a Canadian psychotherapist and counsellor, who does a lot of advocacy for mental health awareness. Our host Salim joins her in this discussion, tackling the taboo that is all too prevalent around the topic, touching on the difference between domestic abuse and domestic violence, the signs to look out for, gaslighting, and several other topics. Along with identifying the flags to watch for in your own relationships, as well as others, Berak gives some pointers on what one can do to help when they suspect a loved one is caught in an abusive situation. As she rightfully points out, it is part of our Islamic responsibility to help and support victims of domestic abuse, and having these conversations is a vital first step.

The conversation meanders along through several topics, with some of the points discussed being mindfulness, the separation of one's thoughts from one's self, and the parallels between behavioural science and spirituality. Sheikh Javad gives us a new perspective to the fasting we undertake, showing us how it develops our self-control, aiding us in breaking detrimental habits and creating beneficial ones. The discussion then comes to an end with a consideration of addictions and how we can overcome them, with particular insight to what makes them so addicting.

Ramadhan Mubarak! This week our host Salim speaks to Iqbal Nasim of the National Zakat Foundation.  It tends to be one of the topics that isn't explored all that much, but in this week's conversation, Salim and Iqbal take a much deeper look at Zakat and how it affects our society. They look at its importance in Islam and impact on the local communities, with Iqbal sharing some of his stronger opinions on the topic, and his reasoning for why.  As he explains his logic and thinking around his approach to Zakat, this discussion leaves us wondering why we didn't share his point of view from the start.

This week The Muslim Vibe has partnered with Britsh Muslim TV for today's podcast. Our host Salim speaks to Adeem Younis of singlemuslim.com about online dating in the Muslim community. A trip down memory lane walks us through the story behind singlemuslim.com, taking us through the journey of how an office above a pizza shop turned into a well-known platform with thousands of users. The platform has seen a surge in the number of users as lockdown measures have been put into place, prompting Salim and Adeem to ask one question - why? They speculate over what the reasons could be, discussing how the pandemic has affected how people get to know each other, and whether conversing online can truly substitute meeting face-to-face. The conversation winds down with some important considerations for those looking to online platforms such as singlemuslim.com,  with particular regard to the current unstable times we are all faced with.

This week Salim is once again joined by Husam as they broach the topic of modest fashion in their conversation with Hafsa Lodi. Hafsa's book 'Modesty: A Fashion Paradox' explores the growing industry that is modest fashion, getting insights from some of the biggest players. This week's podcast extends the conversation, as we tackle the divorce of Islam from modest fashion, watching how the trends shift over time. We also look at the role visibly Muslim fashion bloggers play in our communities, how their platform inevitably makes them role models, and whether they should be placed on that pedestal. The discussion then moves to hijab and modesty, and women's choice around it, as the conversation comes to an end.

This week on The Muslim Vibe Podcast, Salim talks to Ali Jaffrey about his journey of dealing with same-sex attraction. Ali walks us through his life, telling us how he came to be aware of his attraction from a young age, how he coped (for a large period of his life in silence) and how he sought help. We learn about Ali's challenges and obstacles, and how they've led him to develop Strong Support, an organisation created to help Muslims who struggle with same-sex attraction but don't want to act on it. As Ali tells his story, we learn how he struggled and how he triumphed over his same-sex attraction.

Please Note: The topic of conversation in this podcast is a particularly sensitive one and we wanted to approach it with as much nuance as possible. Ali approached us in November 2018, saying that he wanted to write a series about the struggle of people who experience same-sex attraction but don't want to act on their urges. Subsequently he decided he wanted to come in and have a conversation with us on our podcast about his experience and his journey. We're aware that Ali's worldview may not be the same as yours, but this is his story and a perspective we don't often hear much of. We are not attempting to provide a complete or holistic Islamic perspective on this but rather share a brother's journey based on his personal experience.

We made the trip down to Parliament this week to talk to Slough MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi (AKA Tan). A video of MP Tan speaking at the House of Commons a few weeks ago went viral and he passionately berated UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson over his comments about Muslim women and the lack of action from the Conservative party with regards to Islamophobia within the party.  We naturally spoke about this incident on our podcast and we also discussed his personal journey into politics and his views on diversity and representation within parliament. We put questions from our listeners to him and discussed Kashmir, historic Sikh and Muslim relations and even the (in our opinion, somewhat jarring) parliamentary traditions. (Note from Salim: I realise I pronounced Tan's last name wrong in my intro, if you're reading this Tan, I am very sorry!)

On this week's podcast, Salim is joined by Jessica as they speak to Ayat from www.MyTenNights.com

Last year My Ten Nights facilitated donations of over £1.3 million for various charities and this year they intend to smash that target. We speak to Ayat about the journey of the platform so far and also how we can stay authentic in our acts of worship in a increasingly automated and technologically advanced world!

Syed Rizvi speaks with Hooman Keshvarzi, founding director of the Khalil Center, the largest provider of mental health for Muslims in the U.S.

Syed has followed Hooman’s work since he was an undergraduate in Psychology attempting to better understand the overlap of Islam, as a spiritual discipline, and Psychology, as a set of principles designed to help individuals with unseen diseases.

Specifically, the integration of the two and how the linking of spirituality and psychology could be the missing piece for what each was lacking. Psychology failing to understand the role of the ‘spirit’, and spirituality failing to account for neurological, biological, or societal deficits which may impair one’s spirit from ever flourishing in the first place.

This emotional spoken word is in tribute to Razan al-Najjar and every innocent Palestinian soul killed fighting for their rights. Scroll down for the video and full lyrics.

Razan al-Najjar was a Palestinian medic from Gaza who was brutally killed by an Israeli sniper as she heroically tended to the wounds of injured protesters. Though she was clearly wearing a white medic coat, Zionist occupation forces still pulled the trigger from a sniper which pierced her chest leaving her coat soaked in blood. Razan al-Najjar isn’t the first innocent civilian to be killed by the genocidal forces of Israel, and certainly will not be the last until Palestine is free from the occupiers.

In the UK this week a TV show called Muslims Like Us aired on BBC2. It was a social experiment of sorts, where they took 10 Muslims from across the UK and put them in a house together for 10 days.

The two-part documentary was a fascinating look at the broad spectrum of Muslims in the UK and on this podcast we discuss the documentary, Zohra's experiences being on the show and the response after it was aired on national television. We also discuss notions of identity, what it means to be British and the representation of Muslims in the mainstream media.

You can watch both episodes on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwNvZmvBbJjGfAp45M5jkKg

Zohra is the founder and editor of HalalGems, an online magazine and app that finds the best halal food in the world! www.halalgems.com

On this week’s podcast, Salim and Afrah decide that it's about time to talk about their journey to Hajj this year. As promised ahead of their trip, they share their reflections on what it means to make the journey into the heart of Islam. You can see some of the pictures from their journey shared on our Instagram.

They discuss how we should take inspiration from the journey of Hajj and learn to get past our differences and to come together if we truly seek to change the world in which to live. Furthermore, any kind of change is one that comes from inside and the commitment of such a journey is one that should start with ourselves ahead of anything else.

In the second part of this podcast, the team has a chat with the silver medalist of the Great Britain Taekwondo Nationals, Duha Al-Hassani, which comes off the back of quite a surprising interest on the story of Kubra Dagli, Turkish Taekwondo world champion, who competed in a hijab. Read more here: https://themuslimvibe.com/daily-viral-videos/from-the-web/turkish-athlete-kubra-tagli-kicks-up-a-storm-whilst-winning-gold-in-taekwondo-world-championships

Duha discusses the way in which Muslim women are changing the face of sports and the positive responses she has received in her own journey into competitive sporting. She also picks on some incredible Muslim sporting heroes and you can see the video of the Iranian Futsal team discussed here: https://www.facebook.com/themuslimvibe/videos/679862905502047/

She also mentions Lutalo Muhammad's narrowly missing out on the gold medal in Taekwondo in the Olympics over the summer. Here is the video of his heartbreaking interview immediately after the bout: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=456qtt718hk
