Gauri Singh, Deputy Director General of IRENA, the International Renewable Energy Agency, is a career bureaucrat with over 30 years of experience in policy formulation, implementation, and advocacy in renewable energy, sustainable development, and livelihoods.
She has walked a long and fruitful path in the energy domain, but her most notable achievements, she has worked for the Government of India, where she led policy formation for India’s National Solar Mission, in 2010, and in Madhya Pradesh, where she provided strategic guidance for large sustainable development projects, with a strong focus on climate resilience.
An alumnus of Delhi University with a major in Economics, Ms. Singh spoke to ETN Editor-in-Chief Ashok Thakur at the World Utilities Conference in Abu Dhabi, where she discussed her journey, female participation in energy, and ways the sector can attract more talent.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), Gov of India has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to invite bidders for setting up manufacturing facilities under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme to promote Advance Chemistry Cell (ACC) ACC manufacturing in the country.
This is an important step to develop greenfield giga-scale advance cell manufacturing for various end use applications and promotion of diverse energy sources, to ensure overall energy security for the nation in the long run.
On the occasion of the 5th World Energy Storage Day, Mr Ghanashyam Prasad, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India shared about the launch of 1000MWh tender for energy storage in October 2021. He mentioned about the steering committee being ready with the draft of guidelines and bid document. UNIDO has launched 2020 innovation challenge in the “Electrical Energy Storage Devices & Systems” vertical under The Facility for Low Carbon Technology Deployment (FLCTD) programme on 1st November. PLUSS advanced technologies, one of the winners of UNIDO’s 2018 challenge under space conditioning category of FLCTD program, shares experience of being a part of the program, how program helped them demonstrate their technology and boost the confidence, got exposure to larger market segment in India and overseas. The program also helped them build credibility and confidence to the future adopters.

India's grid successfully managed the load drop of around ~31 GW on 5th April at 9pm for 9 mins. Mr B B Mehta, Chief Engg, Gujarat SLDC shares the insights about planning & execution of this nationwide integrated operation.
He also shares learning from the event. With the growing penetration of renewables, grid operators need new tools to ensure reliability and improved power quality. Important point from the conversation is Balancing is very important element of the grid to maintain the grid discipline. Mr Awadhesh Kumar Jha, Vice President , Charge & Drive business, Fortum gives overview of Fortum business verticals on Global level as well as in India. He shares Fortum's plan in setting up charging infrastructure in India in 2020 and also explains few challenges private players are facing in this sector.
He is optimistic that price parity will reach sooner than estimated with ICE vehicles price going up by stringent emission norms and EV car price going down with downward trend of battery prices. According to him 2020 will create foundation for take off of EV adoption in India.

He talks about need of R&D for tropical EV batteries. He explains how the Industry can participate in the program, what level of technologies will be covered, how funding mechanism will work out for this innovative idea and why DST is stepping in these efforts.

In recent weeks, the Indian government’s ambitious electrification programme, Saubhagya has been in news, especially after the budget. The Indian government aims to electrify all households by end of 2018.
So what does electrifying a household mean? Does it imply that households have reliable electricity? These are questions that are not unique to India. Energy access for all is now a global campaign especially after the United Nations emphasized it in the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG No 7.
