Your Health is one of the best investments you can make for your business.

If you want to invest in something that not only helps you directly, but also adds value to your business, invest in your health. It will give yo the energy and stamina to do what needs to be done, while working on your business.

Health starts with mindset.

Kari talks with us about how learning, deciding and then taking action is the key to changing your health journey. You can either decide to change, which is what we recommend OR an event may force you to change. That is what happened to me in 2017. I had no choice but to change. I was stopped in my tracks and had to make smart choices quickly.

She gives us her five step formula.

This formula is what I eventually figured out on my own. I wish I had access to her and her course then. Well, you do. I suggest you fin our more form her if you are interested in changing or need to change due to some health issues.

Go to the quiz she mentions and start your journey.

FEAR - are you experiencing anxiety with a pending recession, the coronavirus, business worries, employee troubles, customer concerns, family matters....? We talk about where to begin, which is with our thoughts. We must handle anxiety when it comes our way. We have to step through the fear and take action.

"What is it going to take?" Tevis Trower

Tevis walks us through how to combat these thoughts. She talks about our baseline fear of survival and how that drives our thoughts. We have to listen to the voice of wisdom. In the end, we have one life to live and give.

"No one here gets out alive." Jim Morrison, The Doors

It may sound unrelated, but we talk about self-respect and self-care and how that plays a central part in dealing with fear. Listen in an enjoy the conversation.

"Do or do not, there is no try". Yoda

It truly is an inside job, isn't it? When we realize this and focus on this, everything can change for the better. We may very well be sabotaging on purpose.

"Either you learn enough to where you want to change,

or you hurt enough to where you have to change."

Align your inner world to the success you want in the outer world. Success in one area doesn't necessarily translate to other areas. We have to take ownership to change these things.

Business Owner Freedom is a weekly podcast for created for small business owners. Some of the podcasts are interviews and a portion are topic based. We invite you to join us weekly to obtain multiple points of view. If you have specific questions, please reach out to us at askgreg@gregorygray.com. Today is a solo cast entitled Isolation is the Enemy.

What is Isolation Isolation can be described as solitude, being alone, being cut off (just to mention a few). Gregory explains the reasons many of us allow this to happen in our lives during this episode. As someone who works with business owners, Gregory sees many of the struggles they are experiencing and that they often try to handle on their own and become isolated. Business owners need to step out and get out from behind those things that cause them to be isolated. Be involved in a mastermind of business owners to network and share the daily struggles and gain advice.

“It can be said that isolation is the enemy of improvement; it can also be said that isolation is the enemy of excellence; it can also be said that isolation is the enemy of growth; and it can also be said that isolation is the enemy of healing.” – Gregory Gray

Eliminate the Isolation Points in Your Life Gregory advises business owners to hire a business coach, hire a smart and capable CPA that understands your business and hire an attorney to have at your disposal to answer your questions so you don’t make mistakes. These things alone will fasttrack your business in more ways than you can imagine. Joining a mastermind group also helps from being isolated.

“I am part of a mastermind group that has taken me to the next level; it is called ISI or Iron Sharpens Iron and is a men’s based mastermind group from all walks of life and we meet weekly. If you are interested in this mastermind you can go to viewfromthetop.com and Aaron Walker is the gentleman who runs this group.” – Gregory Gray

Step Out of Your Isolation Finding those people who will look you in the eye and tell you that you are going in the wrong direction in your business and discuss the reasons why and what else might be beneficial is crucial for business owners. Mastermind colleagues will challenge you and affirm you.

“I am asking you to step out of your isolation. Look for a mastermind group. Look for a group of friends to be your virtual board of directors to run things by in your business.” – Gregory Gray

Trust You need to surround yourself with people you can trust. People who will tell you the truth and help you when needed. People you can confide in and help you steer your business in the right direction. Look for the right fit in a mastermind and take your relationships to the next level.

“There is no better friend than one that will tell you the truth.” – Gregory Gray

If you have questions for us, you can submit those via email to askgreg@gregorygray.com. You can also go to Businessownerfreedom.com\mastermind if you are interested in joining a mastermind of like-minded business owners. Enjoy the Journey!

Tracey Osborne is the CEO of Daring Woman, Inc. Listen to the story Tracey shares in this episode and how she found her purpose. She has been and continues upon an extraordinary journey. Check out the website for more information as well. You will hear about her business journey and how she was a typical corporate employee that moved into entrepreneurship for some life events, particularly to stay home with children and how that has spurred more entrepreneurial events in her life. Tracey is now transitioning into a new business today and you'll learn about how her great vision is starting to manifest itself into a wonderful business. Enjoy the journey.

Tracey Osborne-Entrepreneurial Journey Tracey actually started her entrepreneur journey when she was 18, trying to sell avon, but the past decade she has been a virtual assistant. Tracey didn't think she knew what she was doing, but she had the resources and the people that she could reach out to for help. Prior to that, Tracey was a vice president for a small finance company. It was just Tracey and the owner.

We're really good friends and everything and it really taught me how to network because I had to, he just kind of threw me to the sharks one day and said, hey I'm, I have to go to this luncheon but I can't make it so I need you to go for me.” – Tracey Osborne

New Venture Tracey was experiencing a lack of joy with her job so she started doing some google research on a Saturday about virtual assisting. She then built a websites and by Monday her business was born. Her networking background enabled her to start telling some other really big networking people about her new business and within just a couple of months she was able to give notice at her job and she’s been home ever since.

I am the cream of the crop now, but there was just so much to learn and my clients were all wonderful over the past 10 years, you know, they've taught me about business, they've taught me about softwares that I didn't know when and things like that. And so I was able to become one of the top virtual assistants in the industry before I decided to shut it down. So you did that business for how many years I did it for 10 years. – Tracey Osborne

New Business Venture In July of 2017, Tracey had nagging voice saying that she needed to be doing something more. Tracy did not want to do business plans so she had to work her way through her business. She finally figured out that her business was a social impact organization that harnesses the power of media in order to help women find their voice and become unstoppable.

So we just launched the first magazine. The print version is at the printer, but the digital digital version is up and we're already working on the next three, four issues. So I am really, really excited about it. It's a lot of fun and a lot of, I don't know what the heck I'm doing, but we're going to figure this out, which is probably my favorite way to think.” – Tracey Osborne

Challenges of Starting a Business One challenge that Tracey faced was trying to start her business alone. She didn't really have too many people to talk to and she had to call all her clients and cut down her workload. She no longer had the money to hire a coach, which is what she really needed. The challenge continued until Tracey was able to start bringing on some team members to help her out. She’s a survivor of domestic abuse, has been homeless and has her own story. Tracey wants this story to help somebody else who can't speak yet to the things that they might be alone and don’t know where to turn.

So by connecting these women through the blog for the magazine, through my podcast, we just launched an online community for women at thedaringwomanproject.org. By connecting these women, we can now come together and support one another and help these, help these women who need to know that they're not alone. It needs to know that there's light at the end of the tunnel and need to know that there is somebody out there who has their back.” – Tracey Osborne

Danny Bauer is not only a good friend and fellow coach, he is a remarkable leader. He is the founder and author of Better Leaders Better Schools. He is impacting the world through developing leaders who in turn are impacting kids across the world. Listen to his wisdom and insight in this episode.

Danny Bauer-Three Ventures Danny has three ventures that takes approximately 70% of his time. Better Leaders Better Schools is a coaching program and leadership community. He serves school principals through a podcast, a mastermind, and coaching. He loves education and loves to teach. Danny helps others with their podcasting and their mastermind groups as well.

“What fires me up in the morning is the opportunity to help and serve people. I could trace that all the way back to high school; I loved tutoring my peers. When I saw that they got it, saw that light in their eye, see that longing in their heart and their operating within their strengths, and see their dreams become a reality that’s what gives me energy; that’s my oxygen.” – Danny Bauer

Starting a Business Danny claims that he had a lot of dumb luck at the beginning. He also had a job while starting his business. He dedicated his time to his job and focused 100% and then what time he had left he dedicated time to his business. Danny found the cultural fit in a district he was working in was not good. He found the woman of his dreams and decided that he would move overseas and began working virtually 100%. Now he has found a rich life.

“The way that I think about it is the school I left had about 1,300 kids, that is a pretty large school and impact. I work with 41 leaders now and if we say 1,000 kids per school, I’ve increased my impact to 41,000 through coaching.” – Danny Bauer

Scarcity

Easy connect to your customers

Manages his end of day energy windows

Challenges Danny does not want to fail in his virtual business. He is trying to replace is previous income with his virtual journey and has found some consistency. Coaching principals has been such a positive experience but deals with imposter syndrome being in an uncomfortable zone at times. It does get easier each time.

“I’m afraid of failure. It’s scary.” – Danny Bauer

Scarcity Model The one thing that would change Danny’s business would be exposure. He likes marketing and writing interesting copy and he knows that once people know what he does, they will find it a meaningful asset to their leadership. He has an application process to a permanently closed group and he has to vet the applicants to become members of his leadership community. Having scarcity to his mastermind made it explode.

“The scarcity model absolutely works.” – Danny Bauer

Business Owner Freedom is a weekly podcast for created for small business owners. Some of the podcasts are interviews and a portion are topic based. We invite you to join us weekly to obtain multiple points of view. If you have specific questions, please reach out to us at askgreg@gregorygray.com.

Letting Go to Grow Your Business Example: A business that has been around for 15 years and only grew in the first 5 years has become stagnant and the owner refuses to let go. The business has leveled off and is stuck. Why is the business stagnant?

  1. They want to run the business from a command and control standpoint.
  2. They want to be the person that is seen as the smart person in the business-their ego keeps them from letting go.
  3. People-not hiring the best people
  4. Processes

High Performance Business “A performance business is one that can run with the business owner being absent for an extended period of time.” – Gregory Gray

A high performing business will have processes in place that people can follow when the business owner is gone. This creates a culture of trust and benefits the business. Customers want a business where employees have the autonomy to make decisions as needed. If these processes are not in place, this will limit your growth.

Hiring the Right Team Teaching your people to hire through the processes that are in place is essential to forming a high performing team. With the exception of key roles where the business owner should be involved, ensuring that systems are in place and clearly defined and understood by those who hire. A manager should be trusted to make the decisions to make the hire for their team without the business owner.

“Having a high performance team is a sure path to Business Owner Freedom.” – Dan Miller

Communication and Delegation True delegation is a part of communication and is extremely important. When you delegate you must give the employee the tools to make decisions. Authority must be given for success. The employer cannot assume responsibility of the delegation. The employee must assume the responsibility to get the task time. The employer must ensure that the employee does get the task done. Make sure your employees you delegate to have the tools and the right to make decisions to help grow your business.

“Delegation is giving somebody the responsibility to get something done.” – Dan Miller

Dan Miller is the founder of 48 days and the author of 48 Days to the Work You Love. Along with being a successful entrepreneur, Dan is a Dad, Husband and Grandfather of an amazing family. Listen to his journey and how he built a business from a simple idea that served others. He has inspired me for years.

Dan Miller-Loving What You Do Dan loves what he does everyday. He looks forward to Monday mornings and surrounds himself with people who compliments his skills. Dan has always been an entrepreneur and started his business 48 Days after he went through difficult financial time. He found himself teaching sunday school with his wife about the transitions in life and the class just exploded with members. This is what triggered the start of his business.

“It’s not like I sat down and created a business plan for what I’m doing, it just kind of evolved right under my feet.” – Dan Miller

Transitioning to Charging Dan’s father was a pastor and he found himself challenged when transitioning to a business that monetized. Dan was of the mindset that he was volunteering his time in sunday school and people would see him in a different light if he began to charge. This was not the case and instead it gave his business credibility as he started to coach CEOs of large companies and Nashville celebrities. Dan also invests in himself and continues his learning and personal development.

“I have a formula that I recommend to people invest 3-5% of their income back into personal development.” – Dan Miller

New Possibilities and Opportunities Dan realized that you don’t always need the traditional kind of logistics to start a business. When Dan went through his horrendous business disaster it opened his eyes to many different possibilities. Dan approached the different ways you could expand a business by writing books, creating a course or giving a seminar.

“When I was freed from what I built that appeared to be a disaster, it opened my eyes.” – Dan Miller

High Level Mastermind Dan has always been part of a group of guys that shared ideas during a mastermind. He decided that he would start his own and started a high level personal mastermind and opened it up to invited friends. Dan now has opened an online community and intends to grow it to 2,500 members. At $36 per month, Dan will be making roughly $1,000,000. His business is always evolving and this is essential to Dan’s success. He is always building business and looking four years out.

“The worst thing for me is to get a business that is predictably successful and requires no new energy on my part. ” – Dan Miller

Aaron Walker, Big A, is a 39 year entrepreneur, business owner, Dad and Husband. He leads a group of men in a Mastermind called ISI (Iron Sharpens Iron). As author of View from the Top, he outlines his journey in this episode.

Aaron Walker-God, Character and Integrity Aaron grew up in a very poor household but his dad taught Aaron about character and integrity. Aaron started working in a pawn shop at 13 years old. At age 18 Aaron approached two men with money and proposed that they open a pawn shop together and they formed a business. God blessed the business fourfold and Aaron eventually sold his business and was retired at 27 years old.

“I go back and bought the pawn shop I started with, we spent 10 years building it up to four times the size it was.” – Aaron Walker

Pivotal Moment in Life Aaron’s life came to an abrupt halt when he struck a pedestrian crossing the street with his car and killed him. Aaron was devastated. He took five years off after selling the business again and went to counseling and surrounded himself with accountability partners and coaching. Dan Miller talked him into coaching and Dave Ramsey invited him to come do EntreLeadership Master Series. Aaron loved this and branched out on his own.

“About five years ago I started View From The Top and God has just blessed that.” – Aaron Walker

Significant and Successful Aaron prayed for guidance from God and began to look outward to enable him to help others. He found that the more significant that he was with others the more successful he has become. Aaron found that he could be significant and successful.

“How to live a successful and significant life.” – Aaron Walker

Having a Growth Mindset Aaron wants everyone to be encouraged to have a can do attitude. With education, training and a growth mindset. Don’t live a life of being afraid. Eliminate the fear in your life and you will be successful.

“Don’t ever measure yourself against anybody else because you will always be sorely disappointed; do your own thing, stay in your own lane and do what you’re called to do.” – Aaron Walker

Eric Poulin is a business owner, faith filled Dad and husband along with being an entrepreneur. Listen to his story for why he describes persistence as the key.

Eric Poulin-Excitement for Life and Business Eric’s entrepreneurial experience started with his business venture by mowing yards. He always knew he wanted to be in business for himself. He now has his own business in the construction industry.

“I’m alive in 2018, I live in in the United State of America and I get to try new things almost everyday with my children and my wife through the margin of being a business owner.” – Eric Poulin

Why Construction? Eric’s family was in the contracting business and he had been around it most his life. His first experience on his own was a trash out on a foreclosure for a realtor. Eric spent 2 weeks cold calling in Nashville.

“It wasn’t long before I had more work than I know what to do with.” – Eric Poulin

The Use of Technology Making it easy for your clients is essential. Eric was young and worked hard. He edged out his competitors by using technology. There were still companies in the business faxing proposals and Eric used software to communicate with his clients which differentiated his business positively from others.

“I was young enough not to be afraid of technology and used it for my benefit.” – Eric Poulin

Perplexing Challenges The biggest challenge Eric faced was surrounding himself with crews that clients needed. He went through many crews before they found the right guys to work with that would provide for their clients.

“Surrounding yourself with the right people is key and is very difficult at first.” – Eric Poulin

Collision Industry Adventure Patty’s husband has always been in the collision business. He learned the trade from his father. They recently celebrated their 35th Anniversary in the business, April 1, 2018. They started with with 1 body chop and grew each year. They are not part of a franchise. Their daughter has been in the collision business with them for the 35 years they have been operating.

“The small businesses had the challenge of competing against the big MSO’s, now we are a bigger force to compete with the franchise.” – Patty Denny

Biggest Challenge Finding quality and reliable workers has been their biggest challenge. Patty attributes this to high schools taking out teaching this trade and dad’s aren’t teaching their children anything out in the garage anymore.

“The collision world or any trade that uses their hands and their head is a dying breed.” – Patty Denny

Training Quality People Patty and her husband are trying to work with vocational schools to help grow young people interested in this field. Schools are teaching the basics, but they are trying to hone their skills. They will job shadow to garner interest, some businesses will pay for their vocational school to get certified, but the young person must have the desire.

“Vocational schools teach the basics and then they get on-the-job training, especially the technology side; last 20 years our youth have not been getting hands on training like they used too.” – Patty Denny

Not a Good Fit Gregory answers the question of an existing employee of several years not complying with the new culture initiative and the business’s new vision. He explains at one time this employee was a good employee and met the standard and now the company is moving in a different direction and has implemented clear expectations. The employee is struggling to meet expectations now and is not a good fit now since the business is following their vision. Greg says it’s imperative to address this behavior swiftly.

“If an employee whether they have been there ten plus years or whether they’ve been there only a few months and they don’t meet the values of the organization, there there is no fit.” – Gregory Gray

Addressing Non-Compliant Behavior It is essential to the culture of a business to address non-compliant behavior. You must ask yourself the following:

  1. Have you made clear expectations?
  2. Does the employee understand the values?
  3. Is the employee capable?

Business Owner Freedom advises to sit down with the employee and show them what expectations they are not meeting. Give them a timeframe to improve and list the behaviors that must change.

“As long as it’s nothing illegal, unethical or immoral, you can address it this way, First step is a verbal warning, second step is in writing and third step is termination.” – Gregory Gray

Hiring to Fit the Culture Gregory advises that you have a 7-12 step hiring process. You will learn more about the candidate. Here are the three main steps that Greg uses:

  1. Background Checks
  2. Interview Process
  3. Assessments

Always repeat the vision, values and expectations throughout the interviews. Reach out to Gregory with questions at askgreg@gregorygray.com

“It is easier to train skill, so hire on personalities, attitudes and culture fit.” – Gregory Gray

Business Owner Freedom coaches, educates and inspires CEO's, Executives and Business Owners to achieve freedom of time, money and purpose, while removing chaos and overwhelm from your business. We do this together through focus and clarity on the priorities of a highly developed Vision Story and Strategy. Together, we will build an incredible culture, dynamic leaders and powerful teams. We also systematize the business through processes to create sustainability. The end result is a predictable and growing business with a lifestyle you desire. If you have specific questions, please reach out to us at askgreg@gregorygray.com.

Defining Culture When defining culture, Gregory looks at it from the employees and customers perspective as they are defined differently. Culture encompasses relationships within a business. From the leadership perspective, Gregory challenges the leader by asking if they are intentional about the culture in their business. He also asks if you talk about the culture and do you have a clear list of values and a vision story that articulates what culture you want for your business.

“Culture is the conscious of your business.” – Gregory Gray

Why Culture is the Big Differentiator Greg explains through visual examples to show that people and processes are key instruments in your business. They must work congruently together and both must move in the same direction. As they work together it affects your purpose in business. Purpose leads to profits and performance.

“You will not achieve your purpose unless your people and processes are working congruently together.” – Gregory Gray

Building an Intentional Culture Business Owner Freedom focuses on being introspective as a leader. You can change the culture of any business by setting your vision story and asking your team to uncover your blind spots as their leader. Gregory also challenges listeners to take action by asking yourself as a leader the following questions:

  1. Do you have regularly established meetings?
  2. Have you asked your people about the culture of your business?
  3. If Gregory Gray were to walk into your business, what do you think he would garner about the culture?

“You’re gonna have a culture whether you work on it or not so you might as well spend a little bit of time and intentional effort and have a great culture.” – Gregory Gray
