Fentanyl poisoning, drug overdose, and mental health are growing problems in the United States with each year more and more youth being victims of these social issues. In this podcast, we talk to the founders of the Michael Leonardi foundation and the parents of Michael Leonardi who lost his life to fentanyl poisoning in 2020. Please help support their cause and help raise awareness of this matter.
BIO:
Mona Leonardi is the co-founder of the Michael Leonardi Foundation, a bay area non-profit organization dedicated to raising illicit fentanyl awareness in communities across the north bay area. After losing her son, Michael on February 24, 2020, at the age of 20 to fentanyl poisoning, she started the foundation, along with Michael’s father and sister, to be Michael’s voice and the voice of those lost to fentanyl poisoning. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin, is taking the lives of young Americans at an alarming rate at the hands of drug trafficking organizations and dealers. The number one cause of death in the U.S. for ages 18-45 is fentanyl.
Mark graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology and is originally from Long Island NY. He started a career in the hospitality industry working for iconic hotel companies such as the Four Seasons, the historic Shoreham Hotel in Washington DC, the world-famous Hotel del Coronado, and the Claremont Resort and Spa before starting his own company planning large-scale corporate events nationwide. Currently, Mark is the general manager of a tour company with offices in Napa and Sonoma Valleys while he is not working on the Michael Leonardi Foundation. His daughter Julia is a student at UCSB, and he also has a three-year-old son, Samual, who keeps him busy but very happy. He also thinks about and misses his son Michael daily. Mark's goals are to help spread the word about the dangers of fentanyl poisoning and help keep our children safe.

Dr. Liza Dunn is an emergency medicine physician and medical toxicologist with a long-standing interest in global health. After completing her toxicology fellowship at NYU in 2006, Dr. Dunn returned to Washington University in St. Louis and started an ACGME accredited fellowship in Medical Toxicology.
Over the following ten years, Dr. Dunn became increasingly involved with global health and humanitarian relief projects. She organized a relief mission to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, started the scholar track in Global Health for the Washington University Division of Emergency Medicine, and is one of the Global Health Scholars for the Department of Internal Medicine.
Over the years, Dr. Dunn began to realize that in order to have a sustainable impact on global health, there needed to be an effort to focus on creative ways of addressing malnutrition and insect-borne illness, two of the most commonly encountered public health problems in developing countries. With that in mind, Dr. Dunn started working as the Medical Affairs Lead for Bayer, a global seed and chemical company with innovative technology that has great potential to remediate malnutrition. Dr. Dunn has lectured nationally and internationally on a diverse range of topics in medical toxicology and global health.

Keto or fat adaptation has its advantages and weaknesses. In this podcast, we get into the nitty gritty of athletic performance and talk about how we can potentially and strategically use carbs, proteins and fats both to improve body composition and enhance performance.
Bio:
In short, Peter started his journey about 3 years ago following NSNG(No Sugar No Grain), fell to the dark side and started following the "Eat loads of extra fat, Fear Protein" groups. He then came back to develop the facebook group to support the science of low carb at The Fat Adapted Athlete.
His starting weight was 275 lbs when he got fed up. He had always a fit person (Cop in the USAF, Martial artist from the age of 5, l lived in an Aikido school for a bit/UshiDeshi, avid weight lifter) but eventually at 46 and 275 lbs, he decided to go low carb and train for a marathon. That turned into running 40-60 miles a week/2000+ miles a year and he dropped to 199. Currently he is at 215-220 lbs and aspiring to reach his goal to lean out at 205 lbs.

Why are we becoming insulin resistant and obese? Why is the health and food industry failing? Where did this madness begin? And above all, what happens when you challenge the dietary advice that doesn't work?
Bio: Dr Gary Fettke is an Orthopaedic Surgeon practising in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. He has a major interest in the preventative medicine and encourages his patients to lose weight before undergoing surgery. Although his speciality is surgery, Gary believes it is much better to help people avoid surgery if at all possible by taking preventative measures, which often involve altering the diet.
In recent years Gary has focussed on the role of diet in the development of diabetes, obesity and cancer. He has been speaking out on the combined role of sugar, fructose, refined carbohydrates and polyunsaturated oils linking together to be behind inflammation and modern disease.
He has incurred the wrath of regulatory bodies for his stand on public health, but he and his wife, Belinda, remain active defending the benefits of low carb healthy fat living. There ongoing work has uncovered the vested interests and ideologies shaping nutritional guidelines at an international level.

Knowing all about healthy diet and nutrition is one thing but how do you take all that you learn and apply it to yourself and your own family, especially when it comes to raising your children in a healthy way? This podcast talks about incorporating routines, training and a healthy diet into your family as a whole.
Bio: Danny and Maura Vega are Miami natives who now reside in Tampa, Florida. Danny was the starting runningback for his high school football team and led the county in rushing yards. He went on to receive his bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 2004, where he was a member of the football team. After college, he pursued his Master's of Science at the University of Florida, where he worked with the national championship men's basketball team, women's basketball, tennis and golf. He then went on to become the Strength and Conditioning coordinator for VCU basketball, helping the Rams win the 2007 conference championship.
Maura had a passion for dance since she was a young girl. She is classically trained in ballet, jazz, and contemporary. After high school she found herself struggling with her weight, and spent the next several years restricting food and even went as far as trying out a plant based diet for the sole purpose of "being skinny." A ketogenic lifestyle has not only freed her of her disordered eating, but she has also found relief from severe postpartum depression and anxiety.
These days, Maura and Danny can be found spending most of their time with their two boys. They have a unique way of thinking when it comes to children, and how to raise them. They unschool both of their boys who are also now following a ketogenic diet. Both boys have found relief from allergies and autoimmune issues with a ketogenic diet. They hope to inspire and change the way we see and treat children, and also how we feed them.

Like seemingly everyone else on a low carb lifestyle he has written a blog on running and Type 1 diabetes. Taking all the science in the world of food and nutrition, how do we now create better food companies and tools that would focus on human health rather than be another catastrophe for humanity?
Bio:
In early 2015 Marty started blogging at OptimisingNutrition.com. He tries to provide clarity around many of the confusing and conflicting issues in nutrition, often using a quantitative approach.
While his blog posts can sometimes go deep on a topic, he has also worked to develop a shortlist of optimal foods to suit different goals by balancing the sometimes-competing parameters of nutrient density, insulin load and energy density.

Update 2022: We have changed our stance on Omega-6 and Seed oil in the light of current evidnece in human trials. Please refer to episode 78 of our podcast for more current and reliable information.
When we were developing our Energy Pods, we wanted to know how various types of fats changed the composition of the product itself and how they would impact the body in the long run. In this podcast, we look at heart disease, obesity, cancer and various chronic condition and how Omega 6 fatty acids and various fats impact humans and animals. It also explains why we preferably use Ghee & MCT Oil which are saturated fats in all our products.

Cholesterol gets a bad rap everywhere. Poor bugger actually has quite a role to play and we decided to figure that out! Get ready to geek out on this two part fireside chat with Dave Feldman & Siobhan Huggins from Cholesterol Code!
Dave Feldman Bio: Dave Feldman is a senior software engineer and entrepreneur. He began working with programming and system engineering at a very young age and has always enjoyed learning new mechanistic patterns and concepts.
After starting a low carb diet, Dave found his cholesterol numbers increased considerably. He then began reverse engineering the lipid system through self-experimentation and testing, finding it was very dynamic and fluid. He has now demonstrated this multiple times by moving his cholesterol up and down substantially in a matter of days.
Siobhan Huggins Bio: After meeting Dave Feldman at Ketofest 2017, Siobhan's passion for lipidology was ignited and she was driven to research all she could in a mad attempt to figure out how lipids were involved in the immune system and chronic diseases. She has since written 2 articles that have been published on cholesterolcode.com - on plaque development and LDL modification - with many more posts planned.
Sio has been keto for 15 months in which time she has lost over 65 pounds, reversed her hypertension and stopped her blood sugars from going out of control.
Although later to the game than most, Siobhan has dedicated herself to decoding the mysteries of cholesterol and is just getting started.

Heart disease is the number one killer in United States and with most major heart attacks happening in people with normal cholesterol(1), it's about time we figure out what exactly causes heart disease and troubleshoot the underlying issues. We may have been on a wild goose chase for the last few decades, further defended and propagated by documentaries and health associations, and it potentially costed us lives of millions of people globally.
Bio: Ivor Cummins BE(Chem) CEng MIEI completed a Chemical Engineering degree in 1990. He has since spent over 25 years in corporate technical leadership and management positions. Ivor’s particular specialty is leading teams in complex problem-solving scenarios. Several years ago Ivor encountered a complex technical challenge in his personal life. Receiving poor blood test results, he was unable to get solutions via the doctors consulted. He thus embarked on an intense period of biochemical research into the science of human metabolism. Within eight weeks he had resolved and optimized all of his blood test metrics. Also, he had shed 30lbs of bodyfat with relative ease. In the following years he continued his research on the many “root causes” of modern disease, from “cholesterol” through to insulin resistance. He has also given many public talks and chaired interviews with various health experts. These are available on his YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPn4FsiQP15nudug9FDhluA. In this extremely loaded episode, we talk with Marty Kendall from Optimising Nutrition who is also the brains behind the innovative “Nutrient Optimiser”, a powerful tool that is focused on a personalized solution to optimizing food and nutrition. A headset is recommended to listen to this podcast and prepare for your brains to get cooked! Topics we cover are:
About Marty Kendall: In early 2015 Marty started blogging at optimisingNutrition.com.
His most recent project is the Nutrient Optimiser which consolidates his thinking into an automated system that reviews a person's current diet to provide a shortlist of recommended foods to provide the nutrients they are not getting enough of while supporting their goals, whether they be diabetes control, weight loss, bodybuilding or athletic performance. Marty is an engineer whose interest in nutrition was spawned out of necessity trying to better manage his wife's Type 1 diabetes as well as his own family history of type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Nearly 5.5 Million people in USA are living with Alzheimer's. This isn't something you wake up one day and find out you've lost your marbles! Many drugs seem to be counterproductive but the dialogue is finally opening with a lifestyle and dietary intervention to address the causes of cognitive decline with age.
Amy Berger, Master's in Human Nutrition from University of Bridgeport, is a Certified Nutrition Specialist(CNS), certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner(NTP) and writer of 'The Alzheimer's Antidote' which explores a metabolic and lifestyle intervention approach to fighting Alzheimer's disease, memory loss and cognitive decline. Alongside, she's a fantastic human being with a wonderful personality!
In this podcast we explore her narrative of how she got into the low-carb lifestyle, the issues with current Alzheimer's treatment and medication, the role of insulin resistance in cognitive decline, role of a low carb diet in this situation, symptoms of cognitive decline, interventions that can help or impair, negative effects of Statins, and why the paradigm is starting to shift towards people empowering themselves through public educators, writers and social media. We conclude with her message to all and why it's important to maintain reason and sanity when sometimes the pendulum can swing too far in one direction.
