In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing family lawyer Joplin Higgins OAM.
Joplin is someone I’ve known through the excellent work she does in the family law space for a while now, so it was such a privilege to be able to sit down and learn more about her story. Joplin really is such a great example of someone who came into law through a fascinating pathway, found her calling, and has created a unique space in #Lawland where she continues to flourish.
While covering what led her to where she is now (Joplin’s rural upbringing, love of jewellery, time in Germany and how coral trout led her into the law), a key piece for me here is Joplin’s observation on the importance of loving people as a lawyer, and our role in creating a great customer service experience. In allowing this love and care for clients to shine, it makes us better – not just as lawyers, but as people too.
This conversation was so much fun, but also a fantastic insight into something many of us experience in law – ending up in a space that was not a part of our initial plan! Joplin is a beautiful example of how life leads us to unexpected places, and how we can make the most of these opportunities to learn, grow, pivot, and find joy.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing the wonderful Kate Christie.
In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing James Janke and Drew Hamilton. James and Drew are together the owners and operators of Hamilton Janke, a progressive criminal law practice based in Newcastle. These two friends started their business a few years ago and I so enjoyed hearing the 'how and why' behind that decision. Partnerships in legal firms were certainly the way of the past, but we don't see so many of them popping up now and yet here is one that really works. For James and Drew it is the combination of their shared drive for excellence in their area of law but perhaps more importantly their common belief in the value of life and family. This is a fun interview for anyone with an interest in building a firm from the ground up. These two have done it, successfully, and I can see why having had the chance to enjoy their banter for this hour! We talked about surfing, being a Rock Star and somewhere in their life as a criminal lawyer! My favourite tip from these two was a reminder that as business owners it is important to give yourself permission to have downtime, without any guilt.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Hunter Steele. Now Hunter is a lawyer turned tech company head and one of the creators of the Legal Software Company Smokeball. So how does a boy from Western NSW find himself at the head of one of the world's leading legal tech companies? Well that is what I found out in this chat!
As is the case in so many of these interviews, I was again reminded that our training and skills as lawyers have such broad application if we let them. For Hunter, it was growing up in his Dad's regional law firm, seeing the everyday challenges of small business, that kickstarted his interest in legal tech. That and a wonderful friendship early in his career with another lawyer turned tech guru, Christian Beck.
Hunter's knowledge and love of legal practice shines through in this conversation. And I have decided that building legal tech is sort of 'building' with virtual lego blocks so it makes so much more sense to me now! Jokes aside though, Hunter is another great example of using your skills, following your passions and building a career in law that works for you.

In this week’s episode of the ‘Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast’ I had the pleasure of interviewing the wonderful Kass Hall. I’ve met Kass this year, as she’s finally moved up to Brisbane after many prior moves down south. This is a really interesting chat with a very special person, and I think there’s a lot to take from Kass’s story.
Kass is a lawyer, an artist, a teacher, a humanitarian, and an AFL enthusiast. She’s had a diverse background in both her career and her life experience, and has come into the law as a graduate a little later in life after a prior career in teaching. She is passionate about kindness and helping others, being candid in our struggles, and emphasizes the importance of owning your experiences and struggles in order to learn and grow.
Kass takes us through the difficulties in beginning a legal career after having previous vocations, the realities of health struggles and how they can put life on hold, and the ultimate importance of knowing how and when to say, ‘I am not okay’ – which applies to mental health as much as it does to physical health. She has also struggled with her mental and physical health extensively over her lifetime, and has developed a unique resilience and perspective from these challenges.
Ultimately, Kass’s life experience – both in law and outside of it – is a really powerful story for anyone looking to find their place and make their mark on the world. The bottom line of Kass’s story, and they key piece in her finding happiness?
While we can't control what happens through our lives, what we can control is our responses to these challenges.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Carolyn Devries.
Carolyn has been someone who has been working in a similar space to me for a long time, and finally getting to sit down and talk with her has been such a pleasure. She is running the first ever privately owned not-for-profit law firm in the family space in Australia, ‘New Way Lawyers’, and she has found a very different way of structuring a law practice!
When we think of innovation in law, the focus is often on legal technology or the financial benefits, and Carolyn's perspective has been a really refreshing way to reflect on legal innovation with an emphasis on the humans involved. It was quite some time ago that we did this interview, as is the chaos of 2021 for me, but it really was such a poignant discussion. Carolyn is an incredible person who has lived an exceptional life, driven by her values and purpose in every space of her life and career. From a farming property in a small country town in NSW, she has travelled the world and taken time to carve her own path – a path that has led her to ‘New Way Lawyers’.
Carolyn has created a very unique and holistic practice that makes legal help more accessible. ‘New Way Lawyers’ exists to help guide separating families – regardless of financial situation – through the hardest time of their lives. Not only does Carolyn's team help legally, but they also give emotional and practical support to their clients too. She has created a unique business that embraces both a legal and not-for-profit framework to create a practice that is both incredibly innovative and deeply empathetic. There is a strong sense of peace and freedom for Carolyn in knowing that she is where she is meant to be – in her family, career, faith, and home in Brisbane.
Carolyn offers us a lot of learnings in regards to finding happiness in the law, and her passion, values, purpose and sense of humour are key pieces in that.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Danae Younger. These days Danae is a Barrister here in Brisbane with a beautifully diverse practice. Her career in law has been a fascinating one- from private practice to stints at the Public Guardian and the Crime and Corruption Commission. Danae also has a beautiful perspective on life and law and shared lots of great advice, particularly for anyone considering a move to the private Bar.
And while I thoroughly enjoyed our discussion about life in the law, I was so thrilled for the excuse to discuss my other passion in life-Dance! It turns out that Danae and I have a shared love of all things performing arts and while we are both more connoisseurs than participants these days, Danae threw on her dancing shoes this year and joined the Brisbane Festival in the 'Common People Dance Eisteddfod' something that sounds right up my ally! But for all our chat about dance, Danae's message is an important one- that when we create space for fun or even a bit of silly in our lives it has a wonderful impact on our wellbeing.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Nick Dore. Nick is someone who I have learnt a lot from, particularly in the past 12 months. I wanted to bring in Nick this week, as it is mental health week here in Australia and Nick has a whole lot of helpful things to say about this topic. From his own lived experience to a very successful and equally demanding career in the law, Nick's perspective on the importance of sharing our narratives, seeking help and looking after each other makes him the perfect guest for this important week.
Nick is a criminal lawyer who helped to create Fisher Dore, a renowned Law Firm, here in sunny Brisbane. Brisbane is where Nick has been based for the majority of his life (despite his best efforts to escape to the Caribbean!). Outside of being a successful criminal lawyer, Nick is a very down-to-earth person with a strong sense of humour and a great deal of love for his wife and kids. Something that both Nick and I hold very close to our hearts is mental health awareness, and one of the main pieces we discuss here is the personal and professional changes – both positive and negative – that have occurred in the past year since Covid emerged in this space.
At the end of the day, while someone who has spent most of his life dedicated to building up his firm, Nick has put a lot of emphasis on being a human first, and a lawyer second. While ‘being human’ is a flexible term here (for Nick it means taking the kids to swimming, going to Sizzler and playing Call of Duty), the bottom line of being yourself and knowing when to ask for help is something that is vitally important. Nick’s sense of humour and candidness in tackling these tough discussions is something that I think we could all learn from going forward.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Alex Sinatra. I think Alex best described her role(s) now when she said she has a 'portfolio career'. My take on this descriptor is that Alex has brought together her unique knowledge and experience to build a career in law that has many aspects but is a perfect fit for her.
At the time I recorded this interview with Alex we were both in the midst of following our world leading athletes at the Tokyo Olympics and it made for a fascinating conversation as Alex has both a personal background as a competitive gymnast but also now works in the sports law space. That coupled with her biological connection to Frank Sinatra had me so intrigued during this chat.
Each day in Alex's work life is different and this is how she likes it. She is a true example of building a career that brings together your passions, interests and talents which has at the heart of it happiness- all the things you know I love!

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing one great lawyer and now the founder of 'Simple Courage,' Heather Hubbard. Heather and I have been connected with one another online for years, as we are working on very similar things despite being across the world from one another. She is someone who inspires me a lot, especially with her work in the space of finding courage and joy.
Heather has spent her life on a mission to speak out and change the world for the better. From her childhood in a small, conservative town in Kentucky, she has been determined to achieve her dreams and prove wrong anyone who told her otherwise. Heather has practiced in law firms of all sizes, and found a specialty in holistic strategy and advice. She is the founder of 'All Rise' and more recently, 'Simple Courage', both of which are businesses with a focus on helping people achieve their goals.
What makes Heather so special is her ability to see the bottom line of what stops us from reaching these goals; fear. 'Simple Courage' was founded to hone in on this aspect, and help people to discover themselves and give us the courage to reach (and surpass) our ambitions. A piece that I particularly love that Heather focuses on is her belief in finding moments of play, joy and mindfulness in our lives.
This podcast may seem a little left of field, as Heather is, in her words, an 'inactive' attorney - but I think her focus on fear, courage and play is incredibly poignant and relevant to lawyers at all stages of their lives and careers. There is a lot of power in Simple Courage.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast,' I had the pleasure of interviewing solicitor Kristal Naividi.
Kristal is someone who I hadn’t had the opportunity to properly chat to prior to recording together, and really embodies what is so special about this podcast. Kristal’s sense of humour, kindness, resilience and ability to focus on the bigger picture are things that have really stood out for me – as well as her spectacular ability to embrace the chaos life brings!
Kristal has not followed a conventional path to law. In fact, her first experiences with the legal system came as a part of growing up in public housing across the road from the Long Bay Jail in Eastern Sydney! While her journey into law was non-linear, Kristal now runs her own firm – Coastal Lawyers – and is doing her Masters. In fact, Kristal was drawn to criminal law and family law as her lived experience growing up has given her a lot of insight into how people end up where they are. As a result, she can provide an unusual level of empathy and perspective for her clients.
Beginning as a legal secretary after seeing studying law at university as unattainable, Kristal has since become a qualified lawyer, worked for 12 years with the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) in difficult, varied cases across NSW. However, in 2020, she started finding the build-up of vicarious trauma harder to leave at work – so Kristal decided she wanted to start something new. Kristal started her law firm ‘Coastal Lawyers’ last year, 6 weeks before the Covid-19 lockdown hit - with three boys under 6 at home! Despite this, Kristal has continued to grow her business, run around with her boys, and work in a space that lets her passion for hearing the stories of others really shine.
Kristal’s superpower is her ability to view speed-bumps in life as learning experiences, and to see the bright side of life in even the most difficult cases. Her story is a great reminder to be kind, to listen, to ride the wave, and to remember that even in the toughest days in #lawland, the sun will rise the next day.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Adair Donaldson.
This episode has been a long time in the making!
I have known Adair for a few years, and he is someone that I have a lot of respect for both professionally and personally. Adair is someone who takes responsibility and ethical duty very seriously and is incredibly passionate and dedicated to his work. Adair has dedicated his career to helping people, and in helping make a lasting difference – to individuals and to the legal system – through his role as a lawyer and as an educator.
Adair’s practice, Donaldson Law, specialises in advocating for victims of sexual abuse. What makes Donaldson Law so special is its focus is not just the traditional route of legal assistance. Adair has created Donaldson Law as a practice that takes a far more holistic, understanding and healing approach to their clients. He focuses on the human factor; the trust in listening to and sharing stories, and being able to assure clients that their stories are heard, believed, and going to be shared to make a difference.
Adair’s passion, dedication and determination in law is a great example of what law can offer – to both practitioners and clients – in creating and sustaining a better world.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle Snape. I have come to know Michelle thanks to her involvement in my Mastermind Program this past year. I have often asked myself if perhaps I have learned more from Michelle than she from me in that setting and I have really come to know her as one of the wisest, kindest and impressive lawyers (and humans) I have met in my time. She is also the last person to share her own successes so I am hoping I have managed to do that for her in this interview.
When it comes to legal innovation, often the conversation is centred around firms in metropolitan areas, tech solutions or 'new law' organisations. We rarely hear of the many innovative practices occuring in smaller towns around our regional centres and this is a story of 2 of those. Michelle is one of the most innovative lawyers I know, running two very different practices on the central coast of NSW. You just won't probably have heard much about any of that until now as she prefers to focus on the doing more than the saying!
I could talk for hours about Michelle's achievements but they are best summed up by two things- firstly she has become known in our Mastermind group as 'The Oracle' because she forever has the wise advice that we have all needed on all sorts of things this past year. And she is also the subject of my next 'Celebrating the Cool' brooch for the month of July as I felt her 'coolness' needed to be captured in a brooch too!

It has been almost 5 years since I kicked off this podcast and over those years I have met some really remarkable lawyers and something I am often asked is 'where are they now!' This week I decided to answer that question with 3 of my earliest guests on this show- Janelle Kerrisk, Mel Storey-Scott and Dugald Hamilton.
I interviewed Mel back in 2016 when she was working our at the Brisbane Airport. She now works in-house for a global technology company. She says, 'The difference is like a cruise ship vs a jet ski!'. On a personal level, in our last interview, Mel was just about to enter into her first (and only) bodybuilding competition. She ended up in the top 6 however, the toll on her body sent her into a depression. She says, 'I wasn't a very happy lawyer after we last spoke, but I learnt a lot about my discipline, boundaries and what I wasn't willing to put myself through.'
The last time we spoke in episode 82, Dugald was only a year into the 23Legal journey. So, now that we are a few years down the line Dugald, along with growing his firm, has become involved in the legal hackathon and shares his passion for risk management, technology, cybersecurity, disputes and mental health. He is growing his firm and says 'I'm playing around with a lot of automation and some projects which will be disclosed soon!'
When we spoke on episode 14 with Janelle she had 1-year-old twin boys (who are now in grade one) and had just started Helix. 'I would say I'm considerably more tired now, but my enthusiasm levels are still there and I still believe in doing law differently' says Janelle. She has kicked some amazing goals including running an international arbitration, building a 3 city law firm and setting up online products just to name a few. She has also managed to scale while maintaining a niche market. Janelle says, 'I do feel like I am working towards a meaningful purpose and it has been really beautiful to have that in my life over the last 5 years. '
These 3 lawyers are 3 of my favourites- they are all leaders and always have an interesting perspective on things so I decided they were the perfect bunch to bring together to tackle some of the big issues in our profession at the moment- mental health, the impact of COVID19 and workplace harassment and bullying. These are big topics but these 3 have so much to say that we can all learn from.
So, what is going well in this COVID climate we are experiencing? Well, Janelle has noticed an awakening through COVID in the legal sector which has proven that change is possible in the law. When Covid hit, Dugald was fortunate enough to hire a new staff member who had been let go from a large firm, who as a result has been able to learn about micro-firms and increase his knowledge base as he assists Dugald at 23Legal. 'From the general legal population, we are starting to see lawyers re-evaluate their career paths. They are starting to question the long hours and are starting to value their home life more'. Mel added, 'I also feel like the walls just came down. When everyone was home we saw the full human experience and I don't think we realise how valuable that was.'
In contrast, there are always things that don't go so well. Dugald shares a funny story about 'Dropbox' and the long way to go we have law-land when it comes to embracing change. 'The mental health aspect of COVID and the way in which it is portrayed is becoming a massive issue' says Dugald. Mel says, 'I think we are having a 'me too' moment in the legal profession, in that we are starting to uncover what we knew was actually going on. It is disturbing, but it is ultimately for the better, although it may be uncomfortable.' We then dive deep into a conversation around the responsibility of law firms and the generational changes we have seen as the law catches up to the expectations of society within this space.
All of this change in the law has led to a positive uptake in expectations. 'There is a new generation of lawyers who are willing to stand up and have a voice' says Janelle. 'The clients are also expecting better lawyers and better practices within our firms' says Dugald. There are so many more young women who are coming through law and the definition of success has also shifted within the industry. 'At some point, the gold stars are not enough. There is no meaning' says Mel. Students are starting to see that there are different pathways into the law and the re-framing of conversations that are required in Educational Institutions. There is no right way to do the law and the pathways are opening up drastically.
'The very first conversations I heard around the value of happiness in the law came from you (Clarissa) and I realised it was ok for me to want to be happy' shares Janelle 'Now I base a lot of my law-land existence around that concept.' The science of happiness proves it leads to a longer life, better decision making, calmer people, it is contagious. Clarissa says, 'When we think about what you want for our kids want in life - its happiness. We need to value that ourselves if we want that for the people closest to us in life.' Happiness also makes you a better lawyer! 'The selling point to law firms is - Happiness Pays' says Dugald and goes on to explain this concept. 'When we talk about diversity, it is about the diversity of thought, experience and patterns which leads to growth' says Mel.
We switch topics to client-centric law firms, innovation and if they can be combined in legal practice. The answer - yes! 'When we think about innovation we are thinking about adding value, and it's not just tech-led solutions' says Mel, 'we need to think about the client, come from a place of empathy and ask how we can add value.' Clarissa then brought out a bedazzled tissue box, which led to a conversation around comfort and safety for a client. 'This is where technology, innovation and even a tissue-box can bring people back to a level where they can make comprehensive decisions about their future' says Dugald.
Finally, we are lucky enough to get three happiness tips. 'Have conversations' says Janelle 'listen to people outside of your box, reach out and make the decisions that are right for you.' 'The biggest thing I have learnt is to be kind to yourself. You've got to be led from a place of love for yourself and give yourself some slack- you're doing an awesome job' says Mel. Dugald rounds up by saying, 'Be you. If you are not authentically who you are, you will never be happy.'

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing criminal lawyer Jenna Du Preez. Jenna is practicing from the North Queensland town of Mackay and in this interview we discussed the many advantages that Jenna has encountered since establishing her firm in that region. Jenna launched her own business at the beginning of 2020, just before everything turned upside down, so it was really fascinating to hear how Jenna navigated her very new business through those early months of lockdown when Courts were not hearing matters and things were at a bit of a standstill.
When she is not being a lawyer, Jenna is hanging out with her 2 beautiful daughters and family. I had a good chuckle hearing how fishing is not at all on Jenna's list of things to do even though it is a hobby for many in her local area! And I think my favourite part of this interview was hearing how Jenna has built herself a business in law that enables her the best of both worlds- the ability to do the work she really enjoys but in a way that enables her to be with her family in the way she wants to be.

In this week’s episode of the ‘Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast’ I had the pleasure of interviewing my good friend Fiona McLay. Fiona and I crossed paths a few years ago now and she is someone I have learned so much from because she is my go to #legaltechguru! She is the person that just knows what tech is around and what might work for firms of all shapes and sizes and this passion for legal technology has fast become a business for Fiona.
Fiona is a commercial litigator by trade- a role she has learned so much from having had the chance to work in law firms from the very large to the very small. It is this cross section of experience across our profession that has really helped her when it comes to her tech business too. Fiona is another quiet achiever in law and when she is not off 'lawyering' she loves creative endeavors- from film school to watercolour and photography.
Fiona and I spent the weekend together last weekend at our quarterly business Mastermind so I have had the advantage of seeing in live time the great ideas she has to help us all with our tech for the future and I took this chance to pin her down to her favourite tools for us all to consider!

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing solicitor Michele Davis. I have come to know Michele this past few years through her work as a lawyer of course but also as a writer, teacher and advocate. I would describe Michele as a one of a kind 'law nerd'! She has the perfect mix of a deep love of an understanding of her speciality coupled with a kind hearted soul that makes her a pretty unique find in #lawland.
What I didn't know about Michele is that her path to her law career was anything but predictable. Having left High School in Grade 12 after a difficult experience with bullying I suspect 17 year old Michele could never have predicted where her life would take her. Fast forward a few years and she returned to TAFE to complete her Grade 11 and 12 studies before commencing university while holding down a full time job. Michele fell into a role in wills and estates early in her career and has not looked back since.
The past 12 months have thrown Michele a series of curve balls, the most significant of which has been a chronic health condition that has meant she has once again had to pivot her career path. But as is so often the case, these challenges tend to mean new opportunities and I suspect it is Michele's 'roll with the punches' approach to life that means she just keeps finding those wins even when things are upside down.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing the wonderful John Chisholm. John aptly describes himself these days as a 'recovering lawyer' but I soon came to learn that his passion for the profession is deeply ingrained. John is a third generation lawyer, and you might say followed a family legacy that has been built across 60 years and started with John's Grandfather at the firm Maddocks. It is clear that John has achieved incredible success in his career in law- from Articled Clerk to Managing Partner at one of the country's largest firms but it was John's definition of and perspective on the concept of success that had me intrigued in this conversation.
John left private practice in 2004 and since that time has been consulting to firms all around the world and is a leader in law firm innovation. John's passion for abolishing the billable hour, rethinking the markers of success in law businesses and building a sustainable future for lawyers has driven his career this past decade and I can personally say his influence on so many of us who are following in his footsteps will mean that his legacy will live for many decades to come.
And I would call John a happy lawyer- even if it hasn't always been that way- and I suspect is has been his wife, family and health that keep him that way.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Paul Holmes.
This week I went across the oceans for Happy Lawyer Happy Life the international addition and had the chance to catch up with a wonderful colleague and friend Rajan Chettiar. Rajan is a fellow collaborative family lawyer who practices out of Singapore. Our paths crossed a few years ago thanks to our mutual involvement in the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals and I have been so grateful for social media for enabling us to keep in touch ever since.
Rajan began his career in law in a large firm in Singapore practicing in banking litigation but a few years in, he found himself in a place many of us can relate to- feeling pretty burned out and questioning whether life in the law was for him. He embarked upon a 4 week trip around India (aka Eat, Pray, Love) and returned with the idea to start his own family law firm and hasn't looked back since! I have come to know Rajan as a talented Collaborative Lawyer, a wonderful leader and a kind and empathetic professional. In this interview he shared much wise advice on building a fulfilling career in law and ensuring we all find time for 'life' too.

In this week’s episode of the ‘Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast’ I had the pleasure of interviewing personal injury lawyer and weekend mountaineer Jason Monro. Ok, so mountaineer might be a slight exaggeration but there is no doubt that Jason’s happiness in his day job as a lawyer is well connected to his love of hiking on the weekends. It hasn’t always been that way and in this interview Jason shared with me how he has really shifted his focus to ensure that health is a a priority.
Jason has had a fascinating career- starting in the Army, then the Police and now of course as a lawyer. Jason has spent most of his career as a personal injury lawyer and it is an area of the law that he is clearly passionate about and I suspect excels in. Working for the successful national practice, Slater and Gordon, Jason shared with me the successful way his firm has navigated the challenges of the last 12 months and it was really interesting for me, the owner of a small firm, to understand the logistics of navigating a multi-office national practice through the restrictions imposed during this pandemic.
Jason is another great example of why there are so many different paths both into law and during our careers that lead to success.

This week I went across the oceans again for Happy Lawyer Happy Life the international edition and had the chance to speak with one really wonderful woman lawyer, Iffy Ibekwe. Iffy describes herself as an entrepreneur who just happens to practice law and I can see from our chat that this really is true. Her love of entrepreneurship began with a baking store and has fast moved into her innovative wills and estates practice.
This conversation has it all- motherhood, happiness, mindset, taking chances- all the stuff I love to hear and more. Iffy has such passion and energy for life and it is contagious. A mother to 4 young children I so enjoyed picking her brain on how she does it all. Iffy describes her approach to life as being 'palms up, palms open' and I have taken that to mean taking the opportunities as they come and giving things a go, even when you are not sure what it might mean. I am hoping I might entice Iffy to Australia post Corona madness as I sense she would be such good fun to hang out with!

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing the Honourable Colin Forrest. Colin has had a fascinating career in the law and just this last week has completed 10 years of service as a Judge in the Family Court and started the next chapter of his law life. I have had the privilege of knowing Colin for my 20 years in law and he is someone who I like to describe as the 'poster child of happy lawyering!' Colin's career has taken him from his first role as an Associate to the wonderful Michael Kirby in the NSW Court of Appeal to achieving Silk, to life as a Judge and now life as a mediator and Arbitrator.
And while Colin's achievements in law are something else, it is the way he has approached his life- his optimism and enthusiasm for so much, his endless efforts for causes and his kindness and compassion for others that I have come to know him for. It is this that makes him 'the poster child of happy lawyers'! (And the fact he managed to fit in 3 gap years during his University studies- that surely makes for a happy law student anyway!)
So as we kick off a new year of happy lawyer podcasts I couldn't think of a better guest to bring in 2021. My favourite tip from this interview- 'You only live once so take as many gap years as you can!'

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing a wonderful lawyer from all the way over the other side of the world, Toya Gavin. I interviewed Toya in the week before this year's US Presidential election so it sure was an interesting time to be talking and I concluded mid-interview that Toya needs to throw her had in the political ring for the future. Toya is one smart, articulate and thoughtful person and someone I learned so much from in just this hour.
Toya is of course a lawyer and has a background working in New York in criminal law. Life in #lawland has not always been easy for Toya and she shared openly with me the impact of many years of hard work culminating in a significant health event that left her managing depression and anxiety. As is so often the case though, that very difficult period in Toya's professional life has led to her finding a new string to her career bow and these days she runs a successful online legal practice while also operating a coaching and consulting business, Legally Bold.
This is the perfect interview to see out 2020- it has something for everyone and my podcast silver lining for 2020 has been the chance to move some of these interviews online and connect worldwide with a bunch of amazing legal professionals!
Thank you for your continued support during the very strange year that has been 2020! I am taking a short Podcast break and will be back on the airwaves in February 2021. Have a wonderful Christmas Break and I wish you all the best for the New Year.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Paul Cott- a Melbournian through and through who has found his 'other home' in sunny Ballarat! I learned a lot in this chat about life in Victoria- particularly through the ups and downs of 2020- ands as you listen, I suspect you will soon find yourself in love with the location as much as Paul clearly is.
It is Paul's passion for living a purposeful life that really shines through in this interview. Through a series of considered decisions, Paul has built a career in the law that certainly enables him to have the life that matters to him. It is in this piece that I think we can all learn a lot from Paul.
Paul's decision to study and practice law came 'later in life' as they say but it is a decision he continues to be grateful for. These days he runs a smart boutique practice from his home town, primarily working in employment and commercial law for members of his local community. He has found that magical 'balance' between work life and life and I sense it is his mindset that has been the key here.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing the powerhouse that is Midja Fisher. Now she had me laughing from the moment we began as when I asked what she would be if she wasn't a lawyer we were soon talking about being Reality TV stars and the fun only kept coming from there. Midja has been in #lawland her whole career but you might say she has had anything but a traditional path and in many ways not too many traditional roles which is what makes this conversation so interesting. These days Midja works as a consultant to firms all over the Country on leadership and culture and it won't surprise you that we had a whole lot of fun sharing our ideas of how our profession could change for the better!

This week I got to go 'international' and chat with a wonderful lawyer in Rho Thomas. Rho is all the way over in the USA where she practices primarily in trademark law. We did talk law and particularly Rho's life in 2020- managing her role in a large law firm in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. Rho and I recorded this interview a few weeks ago and it sure is an interesting time to be talking about life in the USA versus life in Australia. Given the current challenges as a result of the pandemic, Rho has been working from home, juggling her job around caring for her two young children since April this year which as I am sure we can all imagine, is no easy thing.
I loved the chance to speak with Rho and learn more about the similarities and differences in our experiences in law. When she is not busy being a lawyer, mum and everything else, Rho also runs a great podcast exploring all things finance for lawyers called Wealthyesque. Something that became really apparent to me in this conversation is the significant benefit we have in Australia through our HECS education system- the difference in the cost of becoming a lawyer for Rho as compared with my experience is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Rho's own experience of student debt and the impact it has had on her family and her colleagues has led to her 'side hustle' helping other legal professionals in the USA make better money decisions to ultimately lead better lives.
There is a whole lot in this chat and Rho is a wonderful guest- full of stories that will make you laugh and honesty that will also get you thinking.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing one wonderful lawyer, Bridget Cullen. I fell upon Bridget last year when she was awarded the Leneen Forde AC WLAQ Woman Lawyer of the Year Award and delivered a speech that was quite something! I heard that speech and new I needed to get Bridget on this show and a year later here we are!
Bridget has had a really interesting career in law- from private practice to the Bar, to Academia and now as a Member of the AAT. Life has not been smooth sailing for Bridget and it is her outlook and her suggestions around perspective and relationships that I really enjoyed in this interview. I knew last year when I first heard Bridget speak that she was one great woman and this interview just confirmed it for me!

This week is a special one- episode 200! And so, for a special episode number I decided we needed a special episode theme. This week I reversed my role as host thanks to the wonderful skills of a great friend of mine, Mel Telecican. Some of you will know Mel, she is a wonderful friend, business woman and spends her days working with lawyers too. She is the brains behind many of the marketing tools that we use at my firm and has been a huge part of building my Happy Lawyer Happy Life business, particularly, The Club through her business Loyalest. Mel also happens to be a podcast host herself so there was no one else who I thought could carry this conversation better.
This episode I reflect on my learnings since starting this show. From the connection between creativity and joy to the many ups and downs of life, particularly this year, I share a few tears, many laughs and of course many learnings thanks to the 199 previous guests. Mel is the perfect host, throwing the big, hard and fun questions and of course enabling us to have a laugh along the way as well. (Thanks Mel!)
So as this episode goes live, I want to say 'Thank You' to you the listener who continue to tune in each week, sharing in this important conversation about how we can build careers in law that have our own health, wellness and happiness at the Centre. And thank you for supporting my little show- 4 years, 200 episodes and over 350,000 downloads later!
In this interview, Mel and I also chatted about all my learnings from the last 200 episodes.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Lindsay Carroll who is the Legal Practice Director at the National Retail Association. Lindsay began her life in lawland as a junior secretary straight out of HIgh School. That first job saw her working at what we now know as Norton Rose where she spent a good few years, ultimatley completing her law studies and transitioning to practicing as a lawyer in the safety law team. Linsay has since moved to working with industry associations, currently at the National Retail Association where she has a varied role moving between legal advisor, advocate and more general assistance to her industry retail clients.
It was Lindsay's thoughts on the importance of finding the fun in our work that I really enjoyed in this conversation. Fun and law are not often words we put together, but there is no doubt that fun tends to result in happiness for most of us. Lindsay had some great insights on how we can all find moments of fun in the work that we do and how this can become an antidote to some of the broader stressors that life in the law can be known for.

Belinda Crosbie and the team at Morrissey law are leading the way when it comes to building a firm that has the health and wellness of its team and clients at the heart of every decision they make. I fell upon Morrisey Law after they won this year's Minds Count national award for their initiative 'mind your marbles' and aside from the great name, I knew I needed to learn more! And more I have! Belinda is based down in beautiful Newcastle and in her day job is a construction lawyer. And while we did talk law, in this interview we spoke a whole lot about the business of law and why it is becoming increasingly necessary to put health and wellness at the centre of a business.
Well the team at Morrissey Law have done just that and in this interview Belinda shared how they have put good health and wellbeing at the centre of their decision making and the significant benefits that have flowed as a result. I got to talk all sorts of fun things in this conversation from movies to Christmas adventures to interior design- all of which will make sense when you listen! And Belinda shared many a happiness tip too! This is a conversation that will have you all out finding a new office dog (save for me... I can't quite make that leap yet, much to the dissappointment of my team!)

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Charlotte Campbell. Charlotte is a fellow Brisbanite who was just great fun to hang out with but in amongst talking basketball and the Kardashians we of course chatted law, life and happiness! Charlotte began her #lawlife in politics before moving into a role within the Department of Defence. A small pivot later and she has found her place as a personal injury lawyer with the team at Shine here in Brisbane.
It was Charlotte's mindset that I loved learning about in this conversation. She has a beautiful way of summing up what matters in life and how she has built healthy routines around her work to ensure she can be the best lawyer she can be. And her love of sport had me laughing along! I don't think I have met anyone yet in almost 200 interviews who wants to be an NBA star if they weren't a lawyer! But Charlotte really does! This interview will have you laughing along for all the right reasons while also reminding us to reflect on the small moments in life and why that is what matters in the end.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer extraordinaire, Paul Horvath. Paul has had many years in law and in this interview shared with me the twists and turns his career has taken him on- initially from practice as a criminal lawyer to now running a vibrant employment and sports law practice from Melbourne. I don't know too much about sports law so really enjoyed hearing a few of Paul's great stories about different cases he has been involved in, some of which have had the added benefit of travel to great overseas destinations thanks to the occassional international tribunal appearance!
Putting aside the very interesting and successful career that Paul has had, it was his wisdom and learnings that I really resonated with in our chat. Having lost his mother as a young man we both discussed how these pivotal moments in life are often the things that drive us to keep going, even on the most difficult days. Paul also had some wonderful insights on mental fitness- focusing on what makes us balanced first and then pursuing our dreams. This is an interview full of great advice for lawyers at all stages and it helps that Paul is a natural story teller so there were many a great annecdote along the way too!

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Madeline King. Madeline is in the early stages of her lawlife but she really has done so much already! Aside from a number of interesting roles during and after her law studies, it was Madeline's outlook on her career and her life generally that I really loved learning a little about through this conversation. Madeline had some really helpful insights on how to build the right rituals and habits early in your career in law.
Madeline's career so far has seen her working in private practice, at the Adminstrative Appeals Tribunal and more recently the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal all of which have built a great platform for her future in our profession. This was a fun conversation- full of law of course but with some great insights particularly for new practitioners on starting out with the right attitude, backing yourself and following your own path into #Lawland.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I visited LA, in a virtual sense and had an amazing chat with Lawyer Christopher Melcher. I fell upon Christopher earlier this year thanks to our connected social world and while we might live on opposites sides of the globe, I could find so much in common with Christopher's experience in the law and his perspective on life. Having grown up with a father as a prosecutor, Christopher described that it was no surprise to find himself studying and practicing in the law and for the first few years of his career, he worked alongside his father and brother primarily as a criminal defence attorney. A few years in an opportunity presented itself for Christopher to move sideways into family law, an area of law he has come to really enjoy. These days he owns and operates a firm with a long time mentor and colleague, Peter Walzer in beautiful Woodland Hills, California.
Christopher's perspective on the law and our role as lawyers was refreshing. It intrigues me that the challenges often studied and quoted relating to lawyer ill-health are consistent in Australia and across the globe in the US. Christopher's own experience of travelling to Australia where unfortunately his wife suffered a serious health issue has led to much of his focus now on kindness and calm in his life in and outside of the law.
I loved this chat and only wish I had of set another hour to capture Christopher's insights as I suspect there was a whole lot more he had to share.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Madeleine Gallagher. Madeleine lives and works in Grafton in Northern NSW where she is fast taking over the reigns of what is a beautiful family built practice. Madeleine works alongside her mum, dad and sister so this really is a story about a family of great lawyers. But Madeleine didn't begin her career in law and she had a few great adventures before finding her way there.
Madeleine hasn't been in the law firm game for too long but she has the benefit of a mum and dad who have together built a thriving firm in a beautiful part of the world for many years now. This was a beautiful conversation about finding your path, family along with a good splash of law! This chat had me revisiting my long harboured plan to return to my home in Northern NSW too!

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer, advocate and relationship manager Sheetal Deo. For someone still only a few years into #lawland Sheetal has a whole lot going on- including a full time role as a Relationship Manager at Queensland Law Society, running her own firm, Shakti Legal Solutions and building a not for profit to advocate for diversity and inclusion in law. I came to understand in this interview that doing 'all the things' is core to Sheetal's purpose and happiness in life and law.
This conversation took us from Sheetal's early life in Canada, her move to Australia to study and navigating her Indian heritage while coming to terms with her own place in life as a gay woman. This chat has it all! My favourite part though was Sheetal's comment about her own experience in law so far- that it is nolonger about finding your fit in the profession but instead about creating your fit- something I can certainly resonate with!

In this week’s episode of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast I was with solicitor Dean Spanner. Dean has been practising in law for almost 30 years now and gee he brought some experience to this interview. I thought we’d be talking a lot about law and a little about cricket but it turned out we ended up speaking an awful lot about life and how to ensure that you can have a successful career in the law that also prioritises the things that matter- in Dean's case his relationships with his family, children, friends and colleagues.
Dean practises primarily these days as a personal injury lawyer but over the course of his career in running a practice he’s had experience in a very wide variety of practice areas. He himself says that it is the people part of law that brought him to it and has kept him in it, and is now inspiring the next generation of Spanners in his practice also. Dean was an advocate and walking example of work life balance before that was even a thing! At 28 years of age (I am guessing a good 20 years ago) Dean implemented a work from home arrangement so he could be with his kids shortly after first becoming a Dad- and he has maintained this routine to today.
It was Dean’s mindset, perspective and spirituality that I found intriguing in this conversation and that I think we can all learn a lot from. He’s a great example that with hard work but clarity around what brings joy to your life, you can live a successful life in and outside of the law.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Alexandra Atanasov and this really was a treat! As I sat down to hear about life as a commercial litigator little did I know that I would soon be talking about crochet! It turns out that Alexandra is one half of an amazing creative duo here in Brisbane, best known as 'imakestababy' in Instagram land! So how do you combine the rigours of commercial litigation with the creativity of a babywear label? Well Alexandra tells us all how and more importantly why!
I loved the chance to hear Alexandra's perspective on life in and out of law- she said wisely that her happiness, her ability to manage the stressors of her job, comes from ensuring she has many sources of joy in her life and purposefully creating the space for them all. Yes she is busy, yes she gets overwhelmed but she has come to learn that there are a few key things she needs to keep herself going and so she made sure those things are every present in her days and weeks.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Emma Fitzgerald. Emma is a solicitor, with a background primarily in the insurance space but right at this moment she is the brains behind all things 'Happy Lawyer Headquarters'. A great idea and a chance conversation has led to Emma coming to work with me for the past few months while she is madly studying in her after hours for the Bar Exam. I have loved the chance to work alongside Emma and thought I had come to know alot about her but thanks to this interview, I now know a whole lot more!
Emma didn't set out to be a lawyer- she had politics on her horizon but a few years into her university studies a law degree seemed a good idea and fast forward a decade or so, Emma has built an impressive career in the insurance space. But it has not all been an easy run and Emma shared her ups and downs both personally and professionally and importantly what she has done (and continues to do) to live a life in law that works for her.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Barrister Nathan Laing. This interview was a joy for so many reasons- firstly because this was my first in person podcast interview since all things COVID took over our world and secondly because Nathan is such a gem of a guest! Nathan's life in law is not new but his career has taken him on a fascinating path- from the police, to life as a criminal lawyer, to the Navy, to the Army and now circling back to all things law again! Nathan's career made for some great annecdotes and he really has such an interesting series of adventures but it was his perspective on life, both in and out of the law that I just loved in this chat.
Nathan and I tackle some of the challenges we are living through right now including the very public conversation about sexual harassment, bullying and other systematic challenges in our profession. Nathan's thoughts on what this all means for the future of our profession left me feeling a great sense of faith that all this upheavel is well overdue and much needed and with leaders like Nathan coming through, the legal profession is in good hands.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Maddison Harrington. Maddison who I have come to know as 'Maddie' is an inhouse lawyer here in Brisbane at Griffith University. I met Maddison early last year when she was just beginning her 'law land life'. And now, a year and a half in, I really enjoyed hearing how Maddie has enjoyed her first role in the law. Over the time I have known Maddie I have also been inspired by her advocacy, honesty and grace as she has shared her own life experience of transitioning from man to woman. This was a wonderful conversation full of law and of course life- I have learned a lot from Maddie and her willingness to offer her own expereince to better educate me/ us and others on a life experience that I know so little about has reminded me of the importance of knowledge to build understanding in a world that at times can feel so cold.
I sense this lawyer has a wonderful career ahead of her and I am really glad I was able to chat with her at this early moment in her career. I will be looking forward to seeing where #lawland takes you Maddie.

I fell upon Wenee a few years ago now thanks to a Facebook Page I now know she and some friends established when she was at University called Survive Law. This page kept me well entertained with great insights and humour about all things law school and having learned a little more about Wenee this past year or so, I now know exactly where that perfect mix of intelligence and fun comes from!
Wenee is another great example of a lawyer following what we might call an unconventional path! I say that having interviewed about 185 lawyers now that all seem to have followed some sort of 'unconventional path' so I am starting to wonder what a conventional path in law in 2020 might look like! None the less, Wenee has managed to build a career in the law that plays to her strengths- firstly in Academia where she has had the chance to study and later teach ethics. And alongside her Academic roles Wenee has had roles in marketing and technology in a variety of legal orgnanisations.
In this chat I also learned about a great 'COVID-19 Collaboration' that has resulted in Wenee and a group of colleagues establishing a new business- Bottled Law- a place where lawyers and lawyers to be can access webinars, courses and other great resources to upskill us all in the technology and business skills needed to excel in a modern law firm. I love this collaboration and the products is it producing. Bottled Law is a great example of what is possible when some savy colleagues pull together their skills and knowledge.
And my favourite piece.... well that is hard in this one but I think Wenee's way of describing the skill set of a 2020 great lawyer- a T shape- deep knowledge in a legal niche and wide knowledge in the business and tech skills our clients need.
Wenee and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing surrogacy and family lawyer Cassandra Kalpaxis. I have come to know Cassandra this past few years and over that time I have watched her work hard to build a practice that focuses on the work she loves to do and balances her love of family. This is no easy feat- anyone practicing in law would feel the tension every day!
Cassandra 'grew up' in law land, starting her first role in a firm at only 14 years of age. She primarily practiced in criminal law- an area of law she really enjoyed however last year she made the decision to move away from this practice area to create the space to focus on work that she really loves in the surrogacy space. Cassandra has since built a business 'Simply Surrogacy' that is helping families of all shapes and sizes around the country achieve their dreams to be parents.
Cassandra and I chatted late at night for this interview so I sense you will have a laugh at our tiredness- but I have concluded that is an authentic representation of our lives in law! Cassandra had lots of advice on starting out, building a practice and all of those important law land things but it is her perspective on family, relationships and friendships that I think is the piece that I will take away from this chat.
In this interview, Cassandra and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Virginia Warren. Now Virginia is no average lawyer! She is a lawyer/ yoga instructor/ TEDX speaker and so much more and it was a real delight to hear her perspective in this interview. I met Virginia in a course a few years ago now and have followed her advetures since. She is an Author of a great book- “Let’s Kiss All The Lawyers! … said no-one, ever" and like me, has been on a campaign to improve the mental health of lawyers world wide.
Virgina has a deep connection to place, space and consciousness and her thoughts on life, law and wellness really got me thinking. She does not live on the surface and really got me thinking deeply about how early experiences in our lives and careers impact how we show up every day. Virginia has a great antidote to all of this though and gave some really great practicial tips on how we can reframe and reshape our lives for the better.
There is a whole lot in the interview and it is one to listen to while sipping a hot tea as you will be transformed off into deep thought and inspired to try a few new things too.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Justin North. Justin is not a lawyer but he may as well be one- he is the son of, brother of and married to a lawyer and has spent his entire career working within the law. I have come to know Justin through his work with his legal consulting firm, Janders Dean. Now it has taken me a solid 3 years of pestering to get Justin on this show and it seems it took a pandemic to get me over the line! But whatever the reason, I am grateful- this was a wonderful chat with someone who really gets life in the law.
I have had the privilege, like so many others, of Justin's generosity and support in my own career so in some ways this was the opportunuty for me to say a 'Thank you' to someone who prefers to shine the light on others than to accept praise himself. He is a true trailblazer in our industry and it was great to hear his optimistic outlook on the future of law, pandemic or not! We talked changes in law from the 90's to now, the future of law, wellness in our industry, the billable hour and of course the joys and challenges of the partnership model. Neither of us have all the answers, but I did take away from Justin's perspective that so much has changed for the better- diversity, wellness and a genuine focus on service- that we can be excited for the future as the building blocks are in place we just all need to keep building on them.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Barrister Avelina Tarrago. Having known from a young age that law was her calling, Avelina has built a successful career as an advocate. Avelina is a proud Aboriginal woman and the current President of the Indigenous Lawyers Association of Queensland. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to discuss her culture- how it has and continues to influence her life and the important role she has played in advocating for her people through her work.
Avelina, like so many of my guests, has had a fascinating career to date (and I sense she is only just getting started!) Having received a cadetship with the Commonwealth DPP while at University, she has had the opportunity to explore many varied aspects of legal practice and just last year made the shift to the private Bar. Avelina has a great outlook on life in the law and lots of wonderful insights on our role in the broader community. This is an interview that will have you smiling, thinking and pondering the importance of connection to place and people when it comes to happiness.

There is nothing quite like a pandemic when it comes to turning the world upside down and now that we are a few weeks in and I feel less like this is 'ground hog day' and more like this is my new normal, I am sharing with you my musings on law, life, business and importantly, finding happiness in all of this sadness. So it is #soloshow time!
I have certainly seen the best and worst in business and people this last few weeks and like all of you have experienced the ups and downs and personal challenges that have come from the changes being made around us. But me being me, I can't stay in that negativity for too long and so it has been the silver linings that I have focused on and that I think now are really pulling me through.
This week I am sharing 5 'tips' that are in part tips, in part my learnings and in part what I have been doing both in my business but also in my daily life to manage this crisis. And I am sharing some of the things that have inspired me- lawyers building and launching new products, great collaborations and small businesses tackling big pivots that in any other time would be seen as incredible innovations- right now all of this is survival! But I love that when backs are to the wall some of the best ideas come and so this week I am sharing what I think we lawyers can be doing right now to survive this strange time from leadership to innovation, humanity, rituals and of course happiness!
So here is the summary!
Leadership - showing up for your team and communicating openly
It is not easy running a business and it is really not easy in moments like these and so I share what I have done at my firm these past few weeks to keep the wheels turning and our team working and why I think it is so important for those of us leading to be honest and authentic right now.
Pivot - using these moments to think and work differently and those that have inspired me this past few weeks
Humanity - how it took a pandemic to get a bit of 'the human' back in law!
Happiness - finding the silver linings
Rituals - building joy into your day the Corona way!
My Bonus Happiness Tip for surviving life during a pandemic.

So a silver lining of this pandemic is that I have had to 'pivot' like so many of you in business and move my interviews 'online' and as such a whole new world of 'happy lawyer guests' has appeared! This week is the first of many a great online interview with someone I have been so keen to have on this show for a while- James d'Apice. In his 'law life' James is a commercial litigator but in his 'other life' James wears many hats- from husband to dad to son to part time rapper to podcaster and a whole lot more. It is the combination of James' law life with his human life that has had me following his work for some time now and I know will have you smiling along in this episode too.
James describes himself as a lawyer who was never going to be a lawyer- growing up in a family of many lawyers, now working in the firm that has carried his surname for generations, it would seem on the surface that James' career in the law was set from the beginning but you will hear in this interview just how far James went to avoid what was perhaps the expected path for him in law. This mindset still drives him today as rather than relying upon the brand built in his family over the years he has been determined to pave his own way and leave his own legacy on his clients and the profession.
I loved the chance to chat with James last week. I described him during out chat as the perfect combination of 'old and new' and is a great example of the happiness that can come when you allow who you are to seep into all parts of your life- work and home.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Rebecca Murray. Rebecca is a privacy lawyer these days running her own consultancy in an area of practice I can safely say I knew nothing about! I sense this is my last 'in person' interview for a while- Rebecca and I sat down a few weeks ago before our truly isolated world began and it was a timely conversation- both from the area of work she practices in but also because Rebecca has been a remote worker for a long time and so her tips on managing the work from home thing have taken on a whole new meaning now!
Rebecca is another wonderful example of the many different ways we can all be lawyers- her career pathway was not what she expected but by following opportunities she has built a niche in a fast growing space for the future. And like so many of my guests she has found her happiness in law by building rituals into her life that promote her wellness- meditation, understanding the limitations of perfectionism and having a 'gor for it' attitude that has got her this far and will be essential in the months of uncertainty ahead.
In this interview, Rebecca and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Nitika Balaram. Nitika is everything we want to see in the next generation of lawyers- passionate, caring and so very determined. But I have come to know Nitika this past year as a fun and creative soul- just last week she baked the most amazing cake for my youngest daughter's birthday! So baking and law- is there really a connection? Well probably not but like so many of my guests on this show, Nitika has found her ability to be the best lawyer she can be is directly connected to her capacity to make time in her life for the people and passions that make her happy.
Nitika has a wicked laugh, can see the good in almost anything and is the perfect guest for a week when we are all coming to grips with our new socially strange world! She spends her days working at the Women's Legal Service on the Gold Coast- a role that brings her great purpose but also comes with incredible challenge.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure re-visiting 10 women who have all had different paths into the law.
Sunday the 8th of March is, of course, International Women’s Day and what better an opportunity than to celebrate some of the amazing women I have had on the show over the last 12 months. There have been many so picking just 10 was a little like having to choose your favourite children- not something that is ever really possible! But I have chosen this group of amazing guests for a few simple reasons- they are all amazing at what they do, and they all have had very different journeys into the law.
Early last year in Episode 130 – I sat down with the wonderful Pheobe Bell
Phoebe like so many of us bounced off to law school straight after school. But a few years into her degree she realised quite quickly that a life in the law was not really for her. She is now the creator of the stunning Australian homewares brand Sage and Clare. In this interview, I got to understand just how Phoebe has gone from a potential career in the law to instead running a vibrant international homewares business playing with colour, creativity, design and joy.
In this section of her interview Pheobe and I talk about:
Next is the wonderful Myra Kochardy who joined me in Episode 132. Myra’s career in law began almost by accident. After having migrated to Australia at 18, it was a chance meeting with a neighbour Myra was inspired to become a lawyer. But like so many of us, she began her degree and then ‘left’ for a while before coming back and finding her feet with a new sense of purpose after having volunteered in the south of China. Myra has since gone on to build a niche in Health Law- initially in private practice and now as an advisor in Government.
In this section of her interview Myra and I talk about:
And then there was Episode 132 with Kath Manby. Kath is the owner of VM Family Law a firm specialising in Family Law and particularly domestic violence work. It is Kath’s own experience, her values and beliefs that have led her to this very tricky area of practice and in this interview, I learned a lot about just why she has invested so much of herself in making a difference to others.
In this section of her interview Kath and I talk about:
Next, I had the opportunity to interview by good friend on Episode 133, Kelly Standford. is the wonderful Kelly did not set out to become a lawyer and in this interview I learned about the many twists and turns life has taken her on as she found her path there. And I am so glad she did! Her story will inspire you and is a wonderful reminder that we can all do anything we set our mind to if we are courageous enough- including working full time, raising two kids and studying a law degree late into the night!
In this section of her interview Kelly and I talk about:
And then there was Episode 145 with Florence Chen. Florence has quickly built a successful practice at the bar in taxation, commercial and construction law and her day job had us talking for some time. Florence is someone I would be happy to hang out with daily! She is everything that inspires me in a great lawyer- intelligent, driven and all of those great traits but equally calm, funny, open and authentic.
In this section of her interview Florence and I talk about:
Marnie Carrol is up next and her snippet comes from Episode 146. Marnie is a contract lawyer by day at DLA Piper- a role that she really loves. But through her decision last year to change how she was living, Marnie has come to find a deep sense of purpose and balance between her work inside the law and her life outside of it.
In this section of her interview Marnie and I talk about:
Next, I had the opportunity to interview Lana Woltman on Episode 147. Lana is a personal injuries lawyer now working at Slater and Gordon Lawyers on the Gold Coast. She thoroughly enjoys the practice of law, helping her client overcome often significant tragedy. Lana shared so many great insights in this chat all around the theme of happiness- from building resilience, being tenacious, celebrating success and importantly, being kind to yourself along the way too.
In this section of her interview Lana and I talk about:
And then there was Episode 151 with Carly Stebbing. Carly took a courageous step herself to create her own practice with nothing more than $6,000 and a whole lot of determination and fast forward a few years she now employs her husband and many others and is fast building a practice that is providing the best of legal services but also a flexible work culture and cost effective solutions for her clients.
In this section of her interview Carly and I talk about:
Next, we listen to Cara Austen who has built her own unique practice, Twine, which has opened since her last interview on Episode 153. Cara has a deep love of the business of law and I think I can say this is in part what drove her decision to start her own firm. Cara, in this snippet, shares her journey into the law and being ok with being a 'law nerd'.
In this section of her interview Carly and I talk about:
And finally, we will hear from Adelyn Koh from Episode 163. Adelyn knew from a young age law was to be her thing and before she knew it, she was there. But a chance opportunity had her and her now-husband taking a chance and moving across from Malaysia to Sydney. A job in a top tier firm EY, living in a beautiful city- it would be easy to think Adelyn had it all sorted but I fast learned in this interview that her experiences in transitioning from practicing in Malaysia to be accepted in Sydney were anything but easy.
In this section of her interview Adelyn and I talk about:

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Natasha Tanirau-Stanley. Natasha spends her days working in a community legal service south of Brisbane assisting young people who find themselves in our justice system. This is no easy role- Natasha's clients include some of our most vulnerable members of society but when you hear the joy and passion in her voice as she speaks of the work she does, I sense you will feel like I did- she is the perfect lawyer for this role.
Natasha grew up in New Zealand and studied law there (primarily because she couldn't achieve her preferred career of being a mermaid!!). She followed her family to Brisbane after her studies and fell into a role initially in family law. She describes in this interview how private practice just wasn't for her and how she found herselft in burn out at a very early stage in her career, questioning if it was the right profession for her. But it was her role as a volunteer at her now place of employment, the Youth Family Service that helped her through.
Natasha is a mum to a beautiful little boy and so we of course shared the joys and challenges of 'life' and family. Natasha is a fun, warm and down to earth soul who will have you smiling, laughing and nodding along with her. And I am glad she became a lawyer and couldnt find a way to live out her childhood dream of being a mermaid- she is just the sort of lawyer we should all be!
In this interview, Natasha and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Personal Injury Lawyer, Leeha James. Leeha is a Brisbanite like me and this past few years has been running a successful boutique personal injury practice, helping victims of occupational cancer- often those working in the fireservice. This is such a topical area in Australia at the moment- having just come out of one of the most destructive fire seasons in our history- and until I met Leeha, I had no idea of the dangers that face the men and women that have chosen this career.
Leeha did not set out to be a lawyer and I joked with her after learning a little about her teenage adventures that she is the perfect story of #highschooldropout finds career success. But whatever her way of getting there, it is clear that Leeha loves her work and the many opportunities her career in law has given her. Aside from being a wife and mum, these days you will also find Leeha heading up the Bayside Community Legal Centre where she is volunteering in her 'free time' and giving back, as so many in our industry do. This is another great chat with someone who has worked hard, achieved great things and still has many years ahead to do a whole lot more!
In this interview, Leeha and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Stephanie Parkin. Stephanie is a proud Aboriginal woman of the Quandamooka People of North Stradbroke Island and it is no surprise, having now learned some of her life experience, that she has taken her intellect and applied it as an advocate for her people. As a talented IP Lawyer, Stephanie now works to represent Indigenous Australian Artists in managing and promoting their work.
I learned so much from Stephanie in this conversation as she shared her perspective on the challenges we as a community and culture face in Australia today as we try and reconcile the wrongs of our past. This interview turned into a wonderful opportunity to explore some very difficult issues and I welcomed the chance to learn from Stephanie (even if I got my arrival date for good old Captain Cook about 200 years wrong!)
These days Stephanie is completing her Masters of Philosophy and Law at the Queensland University of Technology whilst working at the Copyright Agency. She is everything I love about happy lawyers and so I had to know her secret- the answer.... Curry and Netflix! A happiness ritual right there.
In this interview Stephanie and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Criminal Lawyer Kerala Drew. Now Kerala is at the early stages of her law life but gee she has jammed a whole lot in already! You will tell by her accent Kerala grew up in the UK. She knew from a really young age that being a lawyer was going to be her thing. It was all lined up, degree completed at one of the top Universities in London, placements in firms and chambers and a career at the Bar was calling but then a chance trip overseas where she met her now husband and the rest is sort of history!
I loved chatting to Kerala- she is clearly a smart and capable woman and has made some courageous decisions along the way- perhaps the biggest to follow her heart, move to the other side of the world and build a life with the man of her dreams! (can you tell I liked the love story!!) But it wasn't easy and add to that mix becoming a mum, and all of a sudden there are many new hats for Kerala to manage.
This interview is a great reminder of what really matters in life-we all work so hard to achieve in our careers and that is a good thing, but when all is said and done it is the people around us, our family, that will be the source of the memories and the legacy that really matters.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Bronwyn Eynon-Lewis. Now right at this moment you might say that Bronwyn is not a 'lawyer' in the practicing certificate carrying sort of sense but there is no doubt she is a 'lawyer' thanks to one fascinating career that has taken her all over the world and back again!
Bronwyn like so many of my guests began her professional life as a talented musician, but fast forward a few years and she found herself off studying law before jumping on the career ladder that had her traveling and working in South East Asia. She met her husband, they had 3 kids and before you know it this super successful pair were doing all the great things they had dreamed of. But as time went on, home called and a few years ago Bronwyn and her family returned home to Brisbane and a new stage of her career has ensued!
These days Bronwyn is bringing all of her expertise having worked within business development in some of the worlds largest law firms, to now helping lawyers like you and me to start our own firms. Through her business Lacuna, Bronwyn has partnered with two other powerhouse women in Belinda Marschke and Allison Warburton to build a business that provides all the support needed for lawyers looking to make the leap and build their own practice in the law.
I loved this chat- lots of great anecdotes about life overseas (and having a baby in a taxi!) to many great tips on making a few hard decisions in life.
In this interview, Bronwyn and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Barrister Ben McMillan. A fellow Brisbane local, Ben is another one that has had a fascinating career in the law. My favourite parts of this interview though were watching Ben's face light up as he spoke of three things- his brother, Tim, his partner, Luke, and his family of corgis!
Don't let the soft exterior confuse you though, Ben has done his fair share of difficult work in law in his time. His strength is in his varied experience at the Bar in a number of inhouse roles as a Barrister including with the Legal Services commission. He has also been involved in a number of significant Royal Commissions, Commissions of Inquiry and inquisitorial processes. From 2016 to 2017, he was Counsel Assisting the Queensland Parliamentary inquiry into Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (“Black Lung” disease). He appeared as counsel (acting for the State of Queensland) in the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and in the Queensland Organised Crime Commission of Inquiry. He also appeared as Counsel in the Barrett Adolescent Centre Commission of Inquiry and “Operation Belcarra” public hearings conducted by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
In amongst this he also enjoys a spot of Tax Law! I learned from Ben that it is the variety of work that he undertakes at the Bar that keeps him going. And his love of family and Corgis!

It's a New Year (insert chants of 'Happy New Year' here) and I have the perfect guest to kick us into 2020! In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer and mediator Kate Clark. Now this was my second attempt at interviewing Kate as the first time round I completely mucked up our audio so I am very grateful that she came back for round 2!
Kate is everything I love about gutsy women lawyers. Having begun her career in family and criminal law she and her husband made a decision to move their family to the Sunshine Coast- you might call it a lifestyle decision- I would call it a smart life decision and it has paid off. Kate is making her law career work for her rather than the other way around. She has established a niche firm offering restorative justice mediation in criminal and family law matters- a style of practice that is being embraced worldwide for the ability to genuinely settle disputes.
And because we could we talked beach life, raising kids, the wonderful thing that is 'the juggle' and a whole lot more so sit back and enjoy the perfect interview to kickstart a new year.
In this interview, Kate and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Brisbane based Barrister, Reimen Hii. This year Reimen was the winner of the prestigious Law Council of Australia 2019 Young lawyer of the year Award for his advocacy in promoting cultural diversity in law. As an Australian with Chinese heritage, Reimen shared with me his experiences both growing up in Australia but also practicing law and why he has become an accidental diversity advocate in law.
Reimen's career was one of the most interesting I have heard on this show so far- from a year as an Associate to an internship in Cambodia and then a few more years as a Registrar in Tonga I feel like he has done it all and he is really still just beginning! But between law we also spoke family, fur babies, languages and life which all in all made for the perfect conversation to see out 2019 on this show!
In this interview, Reimen and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Sarah Ford who is a Criminal Lawyer here in Brisbane. It has been the month of women working in criminal law on this show- an area of law often not associated with women lawyers but as I learned from Melanie last week and Sarah this week- this is a space that is fast attracting many women lawyers.
Sarah is a powerhouse of energy- which was a good thing for me, as the afternoon we recorded this interview I was fast contemplating leaving the law again and opening that florist! She reminded me of the bits of law land that I enjoy and had me smiling along with her stories too. Sarah has also this past year shared her own story of freezing her eggs- like so many professional women she is balancing her desire to have children with building her career- Sarah explains her decision to freeze some eggs and what that involved (it was much more complex than I thought!)
Sarah is a happy lawyer and I find out just why- a focus on health, strong relationships and rituals that ensure she can separate her work life from her home life seem to be the key!
Sit back and enjoy this interview with Sarah Ford
In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Criminal Lawyer, Melanie Morris. Now we did talk a little about law in this interview- Melanie's day job as a disciplinary and criminal lawyer-but to be honest we spoke a whole lot more about life! Melanie, like so many of us, is navigating a senior role in her firm with raising two very young kids and as the first woman in such a role in her firm to try and do both, she is paving the way for those coming after her! How is she doing it? I have concluded really well and it sounds like the approach of her colleagues and Partners and Gilshenan and Luton has a lot to do with why it is working too!
Melanie and I also shared stories about singing and dancing (yes another performer on the show!) and her childhood experience of growing up with Chinese and Malay heritage and the intolerance Melanie had to overcome. This was another beautiful conversation and a reminder that we are all doing our best to make it all work from career, to family to friends and of course for our clients.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Sydney Barrister, Talitha Fishburn. I found Talitha thanks to the world of Instagram and have followed her daily adventures for a while so it was truly lovely to meet her in person and learn so much more about her life in and outside of law!
Talitha these days spends her time as a busy commercial Barrister, practicing out of Sydney and while we chatted about her experience in this role, it was Talitha's life outside of the law that had me intrigued- from orchestras to choirs to community- I sense Talitha has found her 'balance' between her high pressure day job and creative hobbies and passions.
I was again reminded in this conversation of the importance of finding your people- whether that be through an orchestra or choir- and why community can truly build happiness for us all.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing M&A lawyer Adelyn Koh. Adelyn began her life (and law life) growing up in Malaysia. She knew from a young age law was to be her thing and before she knew it, she was there. But a chance opportunity had her and her now husband taking a chance and moving across from Malaysia to Sydney. A job in a top tier firm EY, living in a beautiful city- it would be easy to think Adelyn had it all sorted but I fast learned in this interview that her experiences in transitioning from practicing in Malaysia to be accepted in Sydney were anything but easy. Adelyn's honesty in this conversation around her own lived experience in facing and pushing through the bamboo ceiling were a stark reminder to me of the bias that exists in our industry and more broadly in our society.
When she is not running around being a lawyer, Adelyn is a wife and mum to two gorgeous kids. She also spoke very openly about her own experience managing post natal depression. Adelyn's openness in this conversation is heartwarming. As Adelyn wisely said- it is how we bounce back from our struggles that defines us- and as you will hear, Adelyn has been determined to not let the challenges she has faced stand in her way.

A few weeks ago I found myself in Sydney and so managed to squeeze in a 'day of podcasting' while I was there! As a result, you will find a good few Sydneysiders hitting the airwaves over the next few weeks and it all begins with one really wonderful family lawyer in Antonella Sanderson. Antonella has had no easy run in 'law land'- having started her own practice when her daughter was only 9 months of age, she has never known much but The Juggle. But Antonella has an outlook on life that resonated with me- she has a beautiful saying 'Be a cat- land on your feet and keep running.' I think that saying really sums her up- no matter life's ups and downs she just keeps going and I suspect that mindset has kept her in good stead.
These days Antonella can be found running her practice, Family Law Matters, from beautiful Cronulla. When she is not volunteering her time for the Law Society of NSW she is mentoring and teaching students and early career lawyers and in her 'free' time you might just find her with her camera taking the most beautiful landscape shots. This was a beuatiful real chat about the ups and downs of life in and outside of the law but I was reminded none of us are alone in that experience.
In this interview, Antonella and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing commercial lawyer, Paul Betros. Now this really is a conversation like no other. There I was thinking I would be learning just what life is like working as a partner in one of Australia's most successful large firms but as you are about to discover, Paul's life adventures have taken him on a journey no one would wish upon anyone!
2011 was a year of incredible challenge for Paul and his family. Firstly the Brisbane floods, secondly learning of their son's disability and then finally Paul found himself fighting for his life after a rare and unexpected health event. Paul speaks openly about the impact of these events on him, his family and his colleagues. We now know they all found their way through but life will never be the same again and Paul might say that is a good thing.
This conversation was a beautiful reminder to me that we never really know what is going on in another person's life, that happiness is a choice we make and that no matter what life throws at us, we just have to 'keep swimming'!
In this interview, Paul and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I chatted with Belinda Marschke who is not really a lawyer....! So what does an Accountant have to say about happiness in law? Well a whole lot when they are married to a lawyer, work in 2 legal start-ups and previously have been the CFO of a large law firm!
Belinda is an Accountant but has spent much of her career working with lawyers and for the past year has been working with 2 of her lawyer friends, through the business Lacuna Legal Providers- providing 'back of house' support to solo and small law firms. Belinda is also running the multidisciplinary tax consultancy business, DBM Horizons with her husband David so I am still trying to work out how she has any time for her life outside of all of this law!!
I found Belinda's insights on the similarities and differences between lawyers and accountants really interesting too and she had so many great tips on balancing career and family, finding your own success and of course happiness!
I have concluded we need more accountants on this show!

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing the wonderful Santhoshi Watapuluwa. Santhoshi began her career in her home country of Sri Lanka studying law, opening a firm and overcoming I suspect many hurdles in doing so.
As her family moved to Australia in search of a better life, Santhoshi had a whole new set of challenges to overcome, having to rebuild her career in a jurisdiction quite different to the one that she had begun her career in.
Santhoshi is the last to tell us the full extent of the challenges she faced in doing this and it is no doubt her attitude and positive mindset that has enabled her to continue to run a firm in her home country of Sri Lanka whilst raising her family, supporting her husband and building her own career in Australia. I have come to conclude that Santhoshi is a true trailblazer in law. To build a career as a woman in a country that is new and different takes a special set of courage and bravery and in this interview, I explore with Santhoshi just what that has meant to her.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing the lovely Sara Kowal who travelled all the way from Melbourne for this interview. Sara began life as a criminal lawyer and she still 'twilights' in this role but this past few years she has really found her thing now leading Monash University's Capital Punishment Impact Initiative. This is a fitting interview for this week- it is mental health week worldwide and there are so many parts of Sara's story that are a reminder that every challenge really is an opportunity. Sara is a mother to 4 and somewhere in there appeared twins! That triggered Sara experiencing post-natal depression, a period in her life she speaks openly of in this interview as one of the most difficult but ironically, the thing that triggered a career pivot and enabled Sara to find her thing- her way of leaving her mark on the world.
Sara now leads an anti-death penalty clinic at Monash University and is the Vice-President of the Capital Punishment Justice Project (formerly Reprieve Australia), an NGO solely focussed on the abolition of the death penalty. Sara leads teams of students as they assist with capital punishment cases and advocacy in the Asia Pacific Region. This is a project and work that is so needed the world over and I loved the chance to hear how Sara and many others are using their skills as lawyers each day to tackle such an important issue.

This week's episode of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast is a little unusual in that it is my first #soloshow! Now I wish I could tell you this was a well planned trial of something new but truthfully it is getting tricky to fit these in person interviews in between my daily life as a lawyer and as much as I could move to phone/ skype interviews, the thing I have come to love about this show is the in person interview- the sitting with people, in real life and unraveling their stories! And so while the limited hours in the day has meant that I am a little behind in my recordings I decided I would take this chance to grab the microphone and #gosolo!
This past few months I have also been working away on version 2 of my book 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life'. It is 3 years now since I published version 1 and I have learned so much since. So I am taking the opportunity in this episode to share with you a few of my learnings of late, some of the tools I am using both within my firm but also more generally in life to generate happiness and my suggestions for 'where to from here' when it comes to the wellness conversation in our profession.
It intrigues me no end that we lawyers, the most educated and in many respects privileged in society, are still struggling with some of the structures within our profession that underpin our unhappiness. It is almost ironic, as if we can't change them then who really can! So this week I am sharing why I think Marie Kondo and her purposeful art of #sparkingjoy may hold the answer for us all.
In this episode, I share 3 big influences on my thinking at the moment;
Shake it off - Is confetti the answer to the modern lawyer's problems? Well I think it is!
Sit back, throw some confetti and spark some joy!
In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of hanging out with Barrister Nola Pearce. From Surf Boats to secret agents to health and gratitude this interview had a bit of everything and so many great tips on happiness along the way too.
Nola knew from the age of 7 that she wanted to be a Barrister and these days that is exactly what she does. But her path to the Bar has involved many interesting roles as she has built her knowledge and found her 'thing' in law land. Nola works primarily in the areas of professional liability and disciplinary proceedings for professionals in an array of professional areas. This is a niche that I didn't know too much about and one that Nola has fast built a strong practice in, both as a solicitor and more recently as a Barrister.
Despite her obvious capabilities as a lawyer, what I came to learn about Nola in this interview was a whole lot more. Her deep sense of purpose, her fun outlook on even the more mundane parts of life and of course how health and fitness are her secret weapon to her success. And when I say health and fitness we are not talking daily walks! Nola is a talented rower from still water rowing to Surf Boats meaning early mornings and strenuous training but a routine that she credits to so much of her own success in and outside of her career.
In this interview, Nola and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of hanging out with lawyer/ athlete/ now finance guru Leigh McBean. Now if ever there was an example of the saying 'there are many ways to be a lawyer' Leigh is it! He didn't set out to be a lawyer and in fact was a professional athlete- being a part of the Australian swimming team before an injury pushed those dreams aside before he had really even had a chance to chase them. And so a few fork in the road moments led to Leigh studying law and finance and practicing law on the Gold Coast before taking some time to undertake a Masters that has fast led to his role in business now with 'RateSetter'.
This conversation has a bit of everything- from law to much on life to chasing dreams, to losing those dreams and rebuilding yourself thereafter. We talked family, 'the juggle' and the differing pressures on men and women in business. So much of Leigh's outlook on life resonated with me and I know you will take something from this interview too.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Hannah Daley a family lawyer with a side love of all things singing, dancing and musical theatre! I first met Hannah a few year's ago when she joined the cast for my last charity Pantomime (that is a story for another day!) and I can tell you- Hannah is an all round singing/ dancing and acting star so it is no surprise to me that her decision between the performing arts and law was a tough one to make.
These days Hannah is a family lawyer here in Brisbane and a strong advocate for young lawyers in our profession. Having been a Board Member of the Qld Young Lawyers for many years now, Hannah has a good sense of the challenges facing new lawyers and graduates as well as the employers hiring them. Hannah shared many great tips in this interview that will be really helpful for anyone starting out in their legal career.
When it comes to happiness it is the simple things that keep Hannah going- her friends and family, dancing and I suspect some singing in the shower too! This was a fun conversation and a great reminder once again that there is no one way to kick start your career in law and what matters is finding your way.
In this interview, Hannah and I also chatted about-

This week's episode is a special one for me! I got to hang out with a lawyer I have come to know and love this past year in Cara Austen. Now putting Cara in a box and giving her a label as to just what sort of lawyer she is is itself a trick! This year Cara has been busily building her own practice in Grafton a town in the Northern Rivers of NSW where she is specialising in working with food and agriculture businesses. All of that will make so much sense when you hear the amazing and interesting path that Cara's law career has taken her on.
Now you do need to know that Cara is one fun, vibrant and determined woman! Law may not have been her first choice, or even her second but she found her way there and hasn't looked back. Her career has taken her all over the world- literally- and she is a self confessed law nerd! Having spent much of her career working in in-house roles all over Asia and Sydney, Cara has a deep love of the business of law and I think I can say this is in part what drove her decision to pivot this year and build her own unique practice.
The decision to leave her busy life in Sydney and relocate with her family to Grafton is the perfect Sea Change. At the time I am sending this interview live, Cara is only moments away from having her second child and like so many of us, is determined to find a way to ensure her career and her life outside of the law can work together! This is where her new business Twine comes in and already Cara is building an innovative practice that services businesses all over Australia from the comfort of her home office.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Barrister Jen Sheean. I love a good chat with our Barrister friends- I am coming to learn that they tend to be a cohort of deep thinkers, problem solvers and lovers of the legal geek part of the law! And Jen was all of those things and so much more. Jen's 'Law Land' life has not necessarily been a traditional one- like for so many of us 'life' has at times meant that her 'law life' took some unexpected turns but for a long time she knew that life at the Bar was where she wanted to be and in this chat she shared with me the fun she has had as she found her way there.
Jen's sage advice throughout this interview on overcoming challenge, seeing good in the world and never giving up on your dreams rang true with me and had me smiling along with her. Another great lawyer doing great things with a fascinating life story to go with it all!

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of hanging out in a ballgown, pre-awards dinner with the wonderful Carly Stebbing. Carly is an employment lawyer by day- running her own award winning Boutique Practice Resolution123- and by every other minute is a mum, wife and devotee of all things family. I have come to know Carly this past year thanks to the inter-webs where she is a regular supporter of so many of us in the law that are looking to do things differently. A few years ago Carly took a courageous step herself to create her own practice with nothing more than $6,000 and a whole lot of determination and fast forward a few years she now employs her husband and many others and is fast building a practice that is providing the best of legal services but also a flexible work culture and cost effective solutions for her clients.
As a specialist employment lawyer, Carly is passionate about ensuring that access to legal advice and assistance is not beyond the reach of any employee. From an easy to access app to full service bespoke solutions, Carly and her team have built an employment last firm for the future- and I suspect the fun has just begun!
Carly and I also spoke about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Erin Walford- an all round pizza loving Senior Legal Counsel at Dominos Pizza here in Brisvegas! I have come to conclude that Erin has one of the most enjoyable jobs in law land- I mean she really does get to make (and eat!) pizza for a living. But on a more serious note, Erin has built a very successful career in law through consistent learning and growth.
When Erin is not making pizza or at least doing all the legal bits that enable Dominos to do all that it does, she is running around being a mum and had some great tips on how she manages the ever talked about 'juggle'. I love the chance to catch Erin on the show this week. We have tried for almost 12 months now to make this interview happen and I really resonated with many of the tips Erin shared on managing the competing pressure of our profession, with her family, passions and everything else she is managing to fit in. There is a lot in this interview that I think we can all take on board when it comes to building happiness in our careers.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Clara Eve. Now Clara at the time of our interview was sort of based in Sydney but I suspect at the time you find yourself listening to this episode, she may have already spread her entrepreneurial wings and headed off to enjoy the next stage of her law life adventure overseas! Clara happened to be visiting Brisbane so I took the opportunity to sit her down. Having followed her new project @lawforthelay on Instagram for a little while now, I loved this chance to meet Clara in person and learn just how she is turning her side hustle into her main hustle!
Clara grew up in country NSW. She, like so many of my guests, has a love of performing arts which she pursued at high school and still dabbles in today. Her initial studies in marketing and communication and law are now all coming together as she is building her own business while consulting to other firms on law of course but also marketing and communications including copy writing.
Clara is another guest that reminded me of one of my favourite sayings- there are so many ways to be a lawyer! Clara may have had a traditional start to her career in law land but I am pretty confident she is about to embark on something quite different as she takes her law career on an around the world adventure!

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing criminal lawyer, Lauren Cassimatis on her career, life and love of all things shopping! Lauren had made her way to Brisvegas where she was holding an event for her network 'Criminal Law Mums' and so I took the chance to sit down with her and to understand how she found her way to running her own boutique criminal law firm 'Gallant Law'.
Lauren knew from a pretty young age that law was her thing but like so many of us, she has had moments along the way where she has questioned whether being a lawyer is 'still' her thing. Those moments have allowed her to both explore a few new interests (aka fashion design) but also to remind herself just why she does what she does. Lauren has ended up working in one of the most challenging parts of the law- criminal law- but in this interview she shares just why she loves this area of law and how she has built a successful career in her niche. Having just opened her own firm a few weeks ago, I caught Lauren right at that moment when everything is coming together that made for a great conversation as well.
Lauren is also the creator of 'Criminal Law Mums' a community initially for women just like her working in the criminal law area. But fast forward a year or 2 and her group has fast expanded to include all sorts of lawyers and is now a hub of referrals, events and creativity. Lauren is a wife and mum and shared her tricks for managing all that this entails. She is a 'happy lawyer' and it was great to hear her insights on how she manages to keep all the plates spinning particularly on those hard days.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Lana Woltman a former (almost) pop star now lawyer from the beautiful Gold Coast. Lana is bundle of joy and fun and I promise will have you smiling along with her during this chat. Having grown up on the Gold Coast, Lana found herself pursuing her passion for music and the stage both at school and later at University. She did tell me that if she wasn't a lawyer she would be a Rock Star and I sense she really is in her own way! Having finished her music degree and pursing that career for a few years a chance motor vehicle accident had Lana dealing with solicitors for the first time in her life. Another chance comment led to her following her intuition and pausing that music career for a law career and she hasn't looked back.
I loved this chat and I am sure you will too.
In this interview, Lana and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Marnie Carroll. We can all thank Instagram for connecting me with Marnie who last year decided to set herself a bit of a happiness challenge, starting a campaign with her wife focused on purposeful living after a difficult 2017. Marnie is a contract lawyer by day at DLA Piper- a role that she really loves. But through her decision last year to change how she was living, Marnie has come to find a deep sense of purpose and balance between her work inside the law and her life outside of it.
I loved learning a little more about Marnie- I always enjoy her instagram updates and her perspective on life but in this chat I got to dig a little deeper and understand just how and why she has made the changes she has in her life. Happiness, wellness and living a great life in her way are big themes in this chat and I encourage you to jump over and join Marnie with her 'Better Human project' work too. From probono opportunuties in Vanuatu to complex contracts for wind farms this chat had it all!

In this week’s episode of the ‘Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast’ I got to hang out with Barrister, Florence Chen and after about a year of trying to make this interview come to life, Florence and I were finally in the same place at the same time and I am so glad we were!
Growing up in Brisbane, Florence knew law was her thing from a pretty young age and she had always seen herself as being in the courtroom perhaps thanks to the likes of Ally McBeal during her youth!
With the number of women at the Bar still significantly less than the representation of women in law more broadly, Florence shared with me her thoughts on how and why that is. Florence sees many advantages for women lawyers considering the Bar, as it does offer autonomy, flexibility and of course many great opportunities to build a purposeful career.
Florence Chen and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Kiará Tarrant and this was a lawyer (and a career!) that I loved learning all about! Kiará began life in beautiful Ireland and her life and her career have taken her from Ireland to London to Holland to New York to South Africa, back to London, back to Ireland and now all the way to Australia! (I may have missed a few stops in there but I think you get the picture!)
Kiara is currently working as a Lead Legal Counsel here in Brisbane for the Virgin Australia Group. I suspect her daily life as a lawyer and mine are very, very different but I came to learn that when it comes to happiness, joy and generally enjoying all that we have, Kiará and I have much in common. An early career in prominent international law firms coupled with meeting her now husband who hails from South Africa, saw Kiará travelling the world but fast forward a few years and Kiará and Craig have found a home for their family here in sunny Brisbane. We chatted law of course, studying and working abroad as well as Kiará's reflections having worked in private practice, in house, in research and government along the way as well.
Kiará shared what brought her to law but importantly identified the reasons she has stayed. For her, it is the ability to do something meaningful and through her work, in many different areas in law, she has seen the difference law can make to individuals, societies and of course now in business. We spoke a lot about the importance of unlocking and understanding your bigger purpose and how we all need to allow space for self reflection- the opportunity to remind yourself if the path you are on is still the right one for you.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing my first father and daughter lawyer duo in Steven and Sarah Stoddart. I loved this interview! (Yes I say that all the time, but I really did love this!) I haven't met too many Father/ Daughter Lawyer combo who are running a firm together and these two are and there is so much that we can all learn as a result! Steven has had 40+ years in law and his calmness shone through for me in this conversation. Perhaps it wasn't always that way, but I suspect that is what 40 years of mastering your trade gives you- a beautiful quiet confidence. Steven and Sarah run a commercial practice and are one of the few firms in the country specialising in servicing the pharmacy industry. Steven shared how his early years in big law threw him into this niche and how he has gone on to build a great practice as a result.
Somewhere along the way Sarah found herself as a lawyer too- not her original plan and also not the plan Steven had for her either- and yet watching the two of them together, I can see why the universe decided to throw them a new plan instead! Sarah also found her career in law initially in a national practice however a leave of absence and an accidental job with her Dad soon led to a very successful partnership between this family duo in their firm Stoddart Legal.
Steven is everything I love about those that have seen it all before and I suspect I only captured a drop in the ocean of his wisdom. His thoughts on managing overwork, on perhaps not making some of the mistake he feels he may have made along the way, were both incredibly helpful and generous. Steve and Sarah are a great example of 2 lawyers, generations apart, sharing their knowledge and building a great legacy along the way!
In this interview Sarah, Steven and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing family lawyer & mediator Sarah Cleeland. Sarah is a Brisbane local and is someone I have known pretty much since my first day in law land. When I began practice in the little town of Sandgate north of Brisbane, Sarah was a few years ahead of me and around the corner at the vibrant local practice Gill and Lane Solicitors. Fast forward almost 20 years and I have moved 'cityside' while Sarah has stayed bayside now owning her own vibrant boutique family law and mediation practice in Sandgate, just a street from where she first began.
Sarah is someone we can all learn a lot from when it comes to happiness. Life has certainly thrown her a fair share of curveballs but it is the way she sees the world that had me both smiling and crying during this conversation. A mum to two now big boys she has done the 'juggle' we all speak of and I loved learning about how she has structured her practice around her family to try and get the best of all parts of her world within a 1km radius!
Sarah is a family lawyer but notes it is not always an easy job but her tips on managing those challenging moments will be useful for all lawyers- family or not! But my favourite stories from this interview involved Sarah's university side hustle running a landscaping business and now being a mother to 100's of pet frogs!!!! (I had no idea!)
In this interview Sarah and I also chatted about-

In this week’s episode of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life podcast, I was with solicitor Rachel Ravell. Rachel is currently working on a Government project here in Brisbane but is another wonderful example of how your legal career can take you in many varied directions.
Rachel grew up in regional Queensland and credits her decision to study law to an interest in the arts and humanities. Early in her degree, she took a part-time job transcribing records of interview in criminal proceedings which fast led to her obtaining her first role at the DPP and the rest is somewhat history.
Rachel spent many years working in the DPP, climbing the ranks before a family tragedy led her to rethink her direction.
I loved this conversation and learning about how Rachel has managed many challenges that life likes to throw at us but has kept a positive attitude along the way. She also shared with us her vision for her future in law and an exciting idea she has to launch a boutique practice. Rachel is another great example that there are many ways to be a lawyer and many paths to success.
In this interview Rachel Ravell and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing my good friend Andrew Evans. Andrew and I met many, many years ago when I was a first year lawyer having almost no idea what I was doing and he was that senior lawyer that would be forever helping me along! Fast forward over 16 years and we are still great friends but our lives in law have taken very different paths. Andrew is an insolvency and commercial lawyer that has had a really interesting career working between some of Australia's largest law firms and more recently in a number of smaller boutique practices mainly here in Brisbane. But it is his 'life story' that I wanted to capture in this interview. I always knew Andrew as a single Dad and one of the poster children for flexible work arrangements before that was even a 'thing' so in this chat I wanted to learn more about how that worked for him and let me tell you- this was a really interesting part of our chat.
Andrew was not someone who planned a career in law- he came to it later in life but has enjoyed it ever since. His honest assessement as this as a 'difficult job' was refreshing to hear- I think sometimes we can make it seem like it should be all rainbows and unicorns and we minimise the stress, challenge and pressure that comes with a career in the law. This interview is overflowing with great advice on law, life and happiness and I was fast reminded why I would seek out Andrew's counsel so much early in my career.
In this interview Andrew and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing soon to be lawyer Jelena Dmitrovic. I have come to know Jelena as she has been working within my team for almost 2 years now. This interview is both a happy and sad one for me as next week Jelena will be spreading her wings and leaving my team at Brisbane Family Law Centre to begin the next stage of her legal career at the DPP. I decided there was no better time to get her on the show and I do love hearing the enthusiasm of our soon to be lawyers as they embark on those first official legal roles.
Jelena was born in Croatia in the midst of civil war. It is no surprise that this alone has shaped so much of her and her family's future. At 18months of age Jelena arrived in Australia with her parents who had fled Croatia to safety however that decision of course left them all having to rebuild their lives almost from scratch. Jelena shared with me her early years in Australia- not speaking english, starting school and yet being surrounded by a strong and supportive Serbian community here in Brisbane.
Fast forward twenty something years and the Jelena I have come to know and love is one powerhouse of a young woman- intelligent and determined but so very generous. I came to learn in this conversation it is her focus on gratitude that I suspect is her super-power. From giving back to learning Jelena had many great tips for lawyers of all stages of our careers. I am so very glad I had the chance to capture her thoughts as she heads off to begin what I know will be a very successful career in the law.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing specialist criminal lawyer Dan Rogers. Dan is a Principal at Robertson O'Gorman- a firm with a strong reputation here in Queensland for advocacy in areas of human rights and civil liberties and criminal law. When he is not running a busy criminal law practice, Dan is volunteering in his role as President of the Caxton Legal Centre- Queensland's largest community legal centre. Dan's life in the law has to a degree come full circle- it was his experience at the Caxton Legal Centre on a High School work experience program that inspired him to pursue law and now, many years down the track and many hours of volunteering later, he is leading that organisation.
Whilst being a talented advocate, Dan like so many of us is wearing many hats- Boss, Lawyer, Husband, Father, Colleague and Friend and it was his advice on making the most of all of the facets of your life that I really enjoyed in this interview. Dan is a 'happy lawyer' as I see that phrase- he sees the best in all that is around him and credits health, relationships, fitness and nature as the things he draws upon for his happiness.

This week's interview had me laughing, crying and then laughing again and I am so very grateful to my guest Michael Biddy. Michael is an environment and planning lawyer at Herbert Smith Freehills- something I can say I didn't know too much about before chatting with Michael, but an area of law that Michael is deeply passionate about. Having grown up in Michigan, Michael shared with me how he found his way to Griffith University in Brisbane, having decided to study law at university. I loved this part of the story- why a boy from Michigan chooses to move his life to Brisbane at 15 years of age!
I have come to know Michael over the past few years thanks to his involvement with The Legal Forecast and more recently Pride in Law. Michael has openly shared his own experience of being a gay man and some of the hurdles that he has faced in his life as a result of the views of others around him. It was this part of our conversation for which I am most grateful. Last year I had the chance to learn so much from Michael, Dean Clifford-Jones and many of the other leaders within Pride in Law. I have perhaps naively thought we as a profession had 'moved with the times' as some would say but I have come to see that there is still some moving to do. And it is Michael and the many lawyers like him who are bravely leading the shifts that are needed for us to build a profession that embraces us all no matter our age, stage, race or sexuality.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer Julann Tiernan. Julann is based on the sunny Gold Coast where she has recently launched her own solo and virtual legal practice! Now it is no secret that I love learning from fellow lawyer business owners but I soon came to learn that Julann has had one of the most interesting careers in and out of law yet! Starting her 'legal life' as a police officer, Julann found herself working on the glitter strip that is Surfers Paradise! I did get her talking about her life in the Police Force and I sense there are many more stories there for another day but between that, being a mum to 5 kids, somehow putting herself through law school, and working all the while too- this lawyer can teach us all a good few life lessons I suspect!
Julann herself says she never really imagined that at 40 she would find herself getting admitted but she did and a few years down the track (I won't give away her age other than to say this interview goes live a day after a very exciting birthday milestone- Happy Birthday Julann!) she has started her own firm, Tiernan Family Law- a virtual legal practice. Now in amongst running her own practice Julann also manages to be a wife and mum to 5 so I determined she was perfectly placed to share lots of tips on how she has done it all all these years!
In this interview, Julann and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing construction lawyer Petrina Macpherson. Now Petrina is no ordinary lawyer (mind you this show is confirming for me that there really are no 'ordinary lawyers' anywhere). Petrina has a side life as a comedian! So yes this interview is full of laughs for all the right reasons. Petrina spends her career as a part of the Construction Law team at Minter Ellison here in Brisbane. She loves her firm, her role and her team. Her life in the law didn't begin in construction work though- she instead found herself initially working in criminal and family law and I found Petrina's insights on why she chose to move away from these areas into commerical and later construction law a great reminder that sometimes you have to keep hunting to find your 'thing' in law.
Growing up in North Queensland, Petrina shared a very personal story of what inspired her to be a lawyer and the very early age of 8! But she chased down that dream and many more along the way. This was a beautiful conversation for me. We did speak law and of course comedy but Petrina had many more great insights on life, happiness and health that I suspect you will really enjoy as well.
In this interview Petrina and I also chatted about-

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing the wonderful Juanita Maiden. Now Juanita is a lawyer but I have come to know her as a Goal Shooter extraordinaire on my netball team! Juanita spends her days working in succession law- an area of the law she has come to really love. But like so many of my guests, Juanita has had a unique and interesting path in her career- starting in a larger practice in commercial law before leaping out of law to work in her family business with her parents in beautiful Cairns. But something drew her back and now she can safely say that she has come to find her place in 'lawland'.
I loved this chat- Juanita had many pearls of wisdom on law, life and happiness along the way and it is her kind and fun nature that really shines through. She also has a deep love of sport and a 'side hustle' through her sports blog and soon to be podcast, Sports Maiden that led us to talking about how happiness sometimes means doing the things you love 'just because'. Not because there is any tangible outcome or result you are seeking but instead 'just because' it brings you joy.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer, mediator, arbitrator and absolute wonder woman, Kelly Stanford. Kelly runs a boutique practice in Camden just outside of Sydney. She practises primarily in family law and child protection when she is wearing her lawyer hat but equally operates as a mediator and arbitrator. While all of that is impressive, the reason I wanted Kelly on my show is so much more! I have come to know Kelly this past few years thanks to her being a part of my membership, The Club. Kelly's fun approach to even the most challenging days always brings a smile to my face and she has inspired me over and over.
Kelly did not set out to become a lawyer and in this interview I learned about the many twists and turns life has taken her on as she found her path there. And I am so glad she did! Her story will inspire you and is a wonderful reminder that we can all do anything we set our mind to if we are courageous enough- including working full time, raising two kids and studying a law degree late into the night!

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Brisbane based Katherine Manby. Kath is the owner of VM Family Law a firm specialising in Family Law and particularly domestic violence work. It is Kath's own experience, her values and beliefs that have led her to this very tricky area of practice and in this interview I learned a lot about just why she has invested so much of herself in making a difference to others.
Kath grew up in the UK and a split decision a little over 10 years ago now had her buying a house here in Brisbane having never been here before, packing her bags and moving! She then had to start the long process of requalifying as a lawyer here in Australia whilst trying to navigate our immigration system but fast forward a few years, a husband, two kids and Kath is here to stay!
Over the past few years and in addition to running her own practice, Kath has been a part of the legal tech start-up Adieu Legal. This is an amazing product offering a bespoke online dispute resolution service for separating families. It was so interesting learning from Kath about what it has been like for her being a part of a very different style of business and learning about the tech start-up world.
Kath is the last person to 'toot her own horn' but I have come to know her this past 2 years as a part of my membership The Club and I know the amazing work she does each day. She is regularly assisting women on a probono basis both in the Family Law Courts and in the Domestic Violence Courts. She has a deep sense of social justice and is forever putting the needs of others before her own. It is all that and more that leaves me inspired each time I see her and I hope I have captured a little of that in this chat.

In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing my good friend of 20 years, Myra Kochardy. Now this took some persuading but I got there in the end and Myra and I sat down early on Sunday morning for this chat. Having grown up in Switzerland with two professional classical musicians as parents and another budding (now professional) musician sister, I certainly expected Myra would find her professional feet in the world of music but instead law has been her thing. And interestingly, I think even Myra is still surprised that she has found happiness in law land.
Myra's career in law began almost by accident. After having migrated to Australia at 18, it was a chance meeting with a neighbour that happened to be a Supreme Court Judge that inspired Myra's decision to study law. But like so many of us, she began her degree and then 'left' for a while before coming back and finding her feet with a new sense of purpose after having volunteered in the south of China. Myra has since gone on to build a niche in Health Law- initially in private practice and now as an advisor in Government.
I am so grateful to have captured Myra in this chat. She really does embody happiness for me and is someone who I have always enjoyed hanging out with as she really does make everything an adventure! She is one of the most kind, generous people I have ever met and so today she is the perfect guest to celebrate International Happiness Day for 2019!

A few weeks ago I got to hang out in Melbourne with an amazing woman, designer and creator in Phoebe Bell. Now Phoebe is not really a lawyer any more in the 'literal' interpretation of that word but I didn't have to hunt far in this interview to learn that it is many of the skills she learned at law school that are now her super powers when it comes to her life now. Phoebe like so many of us bounced off to law school straight after school. But a few years into her degree she realised quite quickly that a life in the law was not really for her.
A few twists and turns later and Phoebe is now the creator of the stunning Australian homewares brand Sage and Clare. In this interview I got to understand just how Phoebe has gone from a potential career in the law to instead running a vibrant international homewares business playing with colour, creativity, design and joy.
If you know anything about me it will be no surprise to you that I loved every minute of this chat. I advocate heavily for the importance of pursuing a life that is true to you embracing joy and finding your own happiness. I wanted Phoebe on the show because I hear so often from lawyers who have found themselves in a place where the law is no longer fit them. That place can be scary and difficult to navigate and the question of 'where to next?' is a really tricky one to answer.
But in this interview Phoebe gives some wonderful advice for all of us on what to do in those moments, how to take our skills and apply them somewhere differently and importantly how to build a life that is just 'you'.
(And yes, I suspect if you love homewares like me you will thank me for this introduction to a home grown talent- go and check out Phoebe's beautiful treasures here.)

Friday the 8th of March is of course International Women's Day and what better an opportunity than to celebrate some of the amazing women I have had on the show this last year. There have been many so picking just 10 was a little like having to choose your favourite children- not something that is ever really possible! But I have chosen this group of amazing guests for a few simple reasons- they are all amazing at what they do, they have all had to overcome some challenges along the way and in so doing made decisions, tooks chances and backed themselves showing us all that amazing things do happen when you take a leap of faith doubled with a strong dose of self belief.
We have come a long, long way when it comes to women and the law in our Country and this group of 10 for me illustrate just how far. From students to Judges this week is a reminder to us all that anything is possible with enough hard work.
Early last year in Episode 67 - I sat down with the wonderful Laura Vickers in sunny Melbourne (well it was sunny on that day anyway!)
Laura is a happy lawyer and has taken ownership of her future. She is my poster girl for my HAPPY acronym. Her ‘Attitude’ is reflected in all she says and does and she has purposefully created a career in the law that works for her, her family and her team. She has been rewarded as a result- both in having a successful business doing work that she loves but also in the tangible sense- having been formally recognised for her innovative approach to business and her work as a woman lawyer.
In this section of her interview Laura and I talk about:
Next is the wonderful Cate Heyworth-Smith QC who joined me on Episode 70. I love Cate's outlook on life. She does not take herself too seriously and I sense that this attitude is one of the secrets to her success. She is giving back to her community and is passionate about keeping good professional relationships in the industry.
In this section of her interview Cate and I talk about:
And then there was Episode 77 - with Shelby Timmins- a family lawyer who has now made a move entirely away from litigation to coaching, mediation and collaboration. ‘Giving yourself permission to do it’ is a something Shelby said that resonated with me in this interview. It really encapsulates her career to date. She has continued to study, continued to learn and continued to share her insight and talent to help others, not for the benefit of herself but to genuinely help separating families.
In this section of her interview Shelby and I talk about:
And then there was Episode 78 with Rebecca Treston QC. As Queen’s Counsel there is no doubting Rebecca’s career success, but in this interview it was her down to earth attitude, practical advice and passion for the law that had me hooked. Like so many of us in law, Rebecca is juggling motherhood, career, friendships and family and she does it all with a smile!
As a Senior member of the profession, Rebecca has built a very successful niche practice in the area of Succession Law but in this conversation I learned so much more about how and why she came to the law and still has the same passion for her work now as she did all those years ago when she first stepped foot in her Father’s firm.
In this section of her interview Rebecca and I talk about:
Dominique Lamb joined me in Episode 79 and described how she found herself in the role of a CEO almost by chance. I learned about a ‘day in her life’ which I must say sounds like it is well extending her legal training as she takes on media, leadership, advocacy and mentorship. When it comes to happiness Dominique had much to share- she is a happy lawyer and credits much of that to her focus on health, exercise and self care. She clearly operates at an intense level in her work and yet I found her to have a deep sense of purpose and calm which I suspect is one of the secrets to her success.
Episode 80 had me hanging out with another of Queensland's greats- Barrister Caite Brewer. Caite operates a specialist practice in Estate litigation here in Brisbane. She is well known for her intellect and talent at the Bar but in this conversation, I learned so much more about the woman behind the Barrister’s gown.
In Episode 108 I was with New Zealand's own legal tech creator in Claudia King who has since become a true 'spirit animal' and a woman I have come to learn so much from. Life in the law was not unfamiliar to Claudia having grown up with a Dad who was a lawyer in their home town, New Plymouth. Fast forward a few years and Claudia found herself in partnership with her Dad as the two of them explored how they could use technology to improve their service. ‘Legal Beagle’ was born back in 2011- the first online legal service in New Zealand and so began Claudia’s foray into the world of start-ups, technology and entrepreneurship. In 2016 Claudia’s life turned upside down when she lost her father. Claudia shared openly how this event caused her to re-assess and re-think parts of her life and how she has found her way through.
In Episode 112 Michelle May AM QC joined me having recently retired from many years on the Family Court. At a young age Michelle took silk and at around the same time, she and her husband welcomed triplet girls. If that wasn’t enough to keep them both busy, she was shortly thereafter appointed as a Judge in the Family Court. 22 years later, Michelle has much to share about living your best life in the law and I am grateful to have had the chance to capture some of her thoughts in this interview. My favourite tip- knowing people who are not lawyers and spending time with them!
I haven't had the chance to interview too many politicians on the show but in Episode 116 I sat down with Senator Amanda Stoker. I had not met Amanda prior to this interview but I very quickly felt a synergy with so much of what she had to say about her choice to pursue law, her love of art and creativity and of course her life as a wife and mum. I loved the chance to also understand what life as a politician really looks like and I think I have concluded that is not a job for me, but I also came to know that I am so grateful Australians, particularly women like Amanda, are willing to take on what must at times feel like an unforgiving challenge of sitting in Parliament, particularly in our current times.
And last but not least the lovely Kiarah Grace Kelly joined me in Episode 117. This interview is full of all the things I have come to love about Kiarah- her humorous way of communicating, her intellect and her positive outlook on life. Kiarah is a true representation of a young woman on a mission to leave her mark- a beautiful mark- on the world and I for one am looking forward to seeing just what she might achieve. She put it perfectly when she said we all need to ‘Be our own biggest fan’ and I sense that is perfect advice no matter your age or stage.
Sit back and enjoy these interviews with these wonderful Women of the law.
In this week's episode of the 'Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast' I had the pleasure of interviewing Nicky Grummitt an all round #radladyboss all the way from Goondiwindi! I may have tried to get the name of Nicky's home town into this interview as much as possible because isn't 'Goondiwindi' just the best word ever! (try saying it 10 times fast just for fun!) Now all jokes aside, Nicky is one savy lawyer who in the last few months has taken that leap of faith and put out her own shingle starting her own firm, Grevillea Law. Now I think it is one thing to start a newlaw law firm in the comfort of a busy town or city where there is a defined and active market place, lots of co-working facilities and no doubt access to all sorts of resources that make that new law firm start up period a little easier. So when I saw that Nicky was creating a modern, vibrant brand from a little town on the Queensland/ NSW border, I was really interested to learn more.
And learn I did! Nicky was a delight to interview and has such a calm and considered approach to business and the law. As a regional girl at heart, she is building a modern law practice that can service her clients all over Queensland all from a great little co-working hub in Goondiwindi! We talked life in the regions, balancing family/ career and all that fun stuff, overcoming moments of unhappiness in your career, taking breaks away from the law, boarding school, hiking and health! And a whole lot more! I loved this chat and now have Goondiwindi on my 'must visit' list for 2019!

In this week’s episode of the ‘Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast’ I had the pleasure of interviewing personal injuries lawyer and all round green smoothie addict, Kate Avery. Another Brisbane local, Kate is the co-owner of the firm Kare lawyers. I knew there was a story to be told here and there was! Kate is a PI lawyer and a few years ago took the leap of faith with her colleague Renee Eglinton to start their own micro practice and they have together gone from strength to strength. In this day and age of large national law firms somewhat owning the PI space it was so interesting to hear from Kate just how and why she and Renee have invested in their own practice. Like so many of us Kate is also juggling her many roles of mum, lawyer, wife and business owner. She has a keen focuses on maintaing her own health to ensure she is the best for her loved ones and had some great tips to share in this chat on health and her top secret health win- the green smoothie! Kate has had moments of loving the law and some moments of less than loving the law and in this chat shares how she has kept all of that in perspective while focusing on finding her joy in the challenge and opportunities her role brings. In this interview Kate and I also chatted about-
