In this week's message from Grand Point Church's series The Voice, Director of Kids Ministry Stephen Hunt walks through the book of Obadiah — the shortest book in the Old Testament, but one of the most convicting. Through the story of Edom's betrayal of Judah, Stephen unpacks how bitterness, gossip, and slander quietly tear apart families, friendships, and churches — and what Scripture calls us to do instead.

In This Episode:

  • The historical context of Obadiah and Edom's family history with Israel
  • The four-part structure of the prophecy: judgment, sin, the Day of the Lord, and restoration
  • How James 3 and Matthew 12:34 connect the tongue to the condition of the heart
  • Practical steps for addressing conflict biblically, straight from Matthew 18:15-16
  • An invitation to repentance and reconciliation

Next Steps:

  • Reach out to someone you've talked about instead of talked to — make the call, send the text, this week.
  • Read Matthew 18:15-16 and James 3:1-12 as a follow-up this week.
  • Talk with your family about what it looks like to "make the messy beautiful" in your own home.
  • Missed the full service? Watch it on our YouTube channel.

Haggai is one of the shortest books in the Old Testament — and one of the most direct. In this episode, Dr. Mark Long teaches from Haggai as part of our series The Voice: A Journey Through the Minor Prophets, unpacking what happens when good intentions quietly turn into good excuses, and what it looks like to consider your ways.

Show notes:

  • Historical background: Solomon's temple, its destruction in 586 B.C., and the return from exile
  • The two ways the people of Judah lost their vision (Haggai 1:1–15)
  • Three commands for the discouraged: be strong, work, do not fear (Haggai 2:1–9)
  • Why sin spreads — and what to do about it (Haggai 2:10–19)
  • The promise of the coming Messiah (Haggai 2:20–23)
  • What it means that you are the temple today (1 Corinthians 3:16)

Next steps:

  • If you've never given your life to Christ, today can be that day.
  • If you need prayer or someone to talk to, reach out to a campus prayer team.
  • This week, sit with Haggai 1:5 — "consider your ways" — and let it shape one specific area of your life.

Zephaniah is one of the shortest books in the Bible, but it names "the Day of the Lord" 19 times. In this week's message, part of our series The Voice: A Journey Through the Minor Prophets, we explore how God lovingly warns His people out of idolatry and complacency — and how a book that begins in judgment ends with something stunning: God singing over His people with delight. Meet King Josiah, discover what modern idols really look like, and hear the invitation to gather, seek, and return. Taught by Pastor Lawrence Metzler.

Show notes:

  • Why the "Minor" Prophets aren't minor at all
  • The Day of the Lord: judgment, history, and hope (Hebrews 9:27–28)
  • King Josiah's reformation — seeking the Lord at 16, removing idols at 20, reopening the Word at 26
  • Idolatry then and now: comfort, money, and technology as modern idols
  • Four warning signs of spiritual complacency
  • The invitation of Zephaniah 2:1–3 — gather, seek, return
  • The surprising finale: the God who rejoices over you with singing (Zephaniah 3:17)

Scripture referenced: Zephaniah 1:1–6, 12; 2:1–3; 3:1–2, 14–17; Hebrews 9:27–28; 2 Chronicles 34; 1 Corinthians 10:14; 1 John 5:21; Colossians 3:3

Next Steps:

  1. Take the Josiah challenge this week — pick one: seek the Lord in daily prayer, name and remove one idol, or reopen the Word with a reading plan.
  2. Identify your modern idol. Where are your time, money, and emotional energy actually going? Bring it honestly to God.
  3. Plan a visit or watch online. New to Grand Point? We'd love to meet you this weekend — details at grandpoint.church.
  4. Share this episode with someone who needs to hear that God still sings over His people.

Have you ever prayed and felt like God wasn't listening? In this week's message from The Voice, our summer journey through the Minor Prophets, we open the book of Habakkuk — a prophet bold enough to argue with God about the evil and injustice around him, and honest enough to bring his doubt straight to God's throne. What he received wasn't an explanation, but a revelation: "the righteous shall live by faith" (Habakkuk 2:4). Discover how to climb the watchtower when God seems silent, and how Even-If faith (Habakkuk 3:17-19) can turn your lament into worship — even before your circumstances change.

Show Notes:

  • Speaker: Dan Culbertson, Shippensburg Campus Pastor
  • Series: The Voice — a summer walk through the Minor Prophets
  • Main text: Habakkuk 1–3
  • Supporting texts: Romans 5:3-5; Romans 10:9
  • Habakkuk is written as a call-and-response conversation between the prophet and God, largely in the Hebrew form of lament
  • Doubt, frustration, and honest questions are not the opposite of faith — Jacob, Job, Jeremiah, and Thomas all wrestled with God, and He rejected none of them
  • Habakkuk 2:4 — "the righteous shall live by his faith" — later quoted in Romans, Galatians, and Hebrews
  • Two practices for seasons of perceived silence: Climb the Watchtower (move toward God, not away — keep praying, keep seeking, position yourself to watch for His movement) and Even-If (decide in advance to worship even if the worst-case scenario happens — Habakkuk 3:17-19)
  • Referenced: Craig Groeschel, Hope in the Dark — acceptance is not denial; honest grief and real hope belong together

Next Steps (highlight in episode page):

  1. Follow Jesus. If you made a decision to follow Jesus during this message, we'd love to celebrate with you and help you find your next step — visit grandpoint.church or stop by Guest Services this weekend.
  2. Read Habakkuk this week. It's only three chapters — read it slowly and watch the prophet move from lament to praise.
  3. Name your Even-If. Write down your worst-case scenario, then bring it honestly to God in prayer and choose worship anyway.

The book of Jonah ends with one of history's greatest comebacks — an entire city repenting and God relenting. But what happened next? In this week's message from THE VOICE, our series through the Minor Prophets, we open Nahum: the Bible's sequel to Jonah, written a century later to the very same city. Discover why mercy and judgment are complementary rather than contradictory, why faith can never be inherited, and why this hard-edged prophecy contains one of the most comforting promises in Scripture: "The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him" (Nahum 1:7).

Show Notes

  • The Bible's "sequel": how Nahum continues the story of Jonah, 100 years later
  • The Bible as a book of comebacks — Moses, Rahab, Peter, Paul
  • Three truths about God from Nahum 1:2–3: He cares for His people, He judges what opposes Him, and He is slow to anger
  • Nineveh at the height of its power — and the prophecy no one believed
  • History's confirmation: the flood, the fire, and a city lost until the 1840s
  • Why God judged Nineveh: violence, idolatry, and arrogance
  • Two lessons for today: sin will be dealt with, and God's mercy must be embraced by each generation
  • The hope inside a hard book: God as refuge (Nahum 1:7)

Scriptures referenced: Nahum 1:2–3; 1:7; 1:8; 1:15; 2:2; 3:1–10; Jonah 3:1–10

Next Steps

  • Take a personal step of faith — if you've been living on borrowed or inherited faith, make it your own this week
  • Request prayer — our team would love to pray with you
  • Plan a visit or take your next step through baptism or a group

You think you know Jonah — the prophet, the storm, the whale. But this week's message adds one word that changes the whole story: disobedience. In this episode of Weekend Messages at Grand Point Church, part of our series The Voice on the minor prophets, we walk through the book of Jonah and find a man who heard God clearly and ran the other way, a God whose mercy was bigger than his enemies, and a question that lands on all of us: will we obey, or will we run? Wherever you're listening from, there's a next step here for you.

Show notes:

  • Why "minor prophet" doesn't mean minor impact
  • "Jonah + disobedience = whale" — the reframe that reshapes the story
  • The calling Jonah didn't want, and why he ran (Jonah 1:1–3)
  • How God used even Jonah's disobedience to bring the sailors to worship (Jonah 1:15–16)
  • The honest prayer from inside the fish (Jonah 2:2–3)
  • Nineveh repents — and Jonah sulks (Jonah 4:1–11)
  • "Where are your priorities?" — God's closing question
  • Avoidance vs. obedience, and the excuses we baptize in Christian language

Scripture referenced: Jeremiah 29:11 · Isaiah 30:21 · Jonah 1, 2 & 4

Next steps this week:

  1. Identify the calling — ask the Holy Spirit if there's something you've been avoiding.
  2. Repent honestly — confess the resistance; ask for a willing heart.
  3. Take one obedient step — make the call, release the control, say yes.

God is still speaking — but pride, fear, and bitterness can fill the line with static. In this week's message from our summer series The Voice, Pastor Lawrence walks through the book of Micah, an Old Testament courtroom drama where God takes the bench as Judge, His people stand as the defendants, and the verdict bends toward mercy.

We'll meet a small-town prophet with a nation-sized message, name the three barriers that keep us from hearing God's voice, and land on one of the most famous summaries of faith in all of Scripture: "To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). It's a message about getting the static out — and rediscovering the God who casts our sins into the depths of the sea.

In this episode:

  • Why we're drawn to courtroom drama — and how Micah reads like one
  • The truth that God is a speaking God who wants real conversation with you
  • The three barriers to hearing God: pride, fear, and bitterness
  • Why "resentment is a self-inflicted wound" — and how to let it go (James 1:21)
  • The difference between hearing what we want and what we need
  • Micah 6:8 and what God actually requires of us
  • The hope of Micah 7:18 — the God who pardons sin

Next steps this week:

  • 👉 Pick one barrier — pride, fear, or bitterness — and take one honest step to clear it. If it's bitterness, name the hurt and choose to release it this week.

Everybody's an expert on what's wrong with the world — but Amos had a harder question. In week 3 of The Voice, our summer series through the Minor Prophets, Pastor Lawrence introduces us to Amos: a shepherd and fig farmer with no prophetic pedigree, called by God to confront a prosperous, comfortable people who loved hearing about everyone else's failures. When Amos turned the spotlight around, his message stopped being popular — and started getting personal. This week, sit with the question Amos leaves for all of us: if someone learned about God only by watching your life, what would they learn?

Show Notes:

  • Why God sends "warnings" — and the people He uses to deliver them
  • Amos the unlikely prophet: a farmer, not a professional (Amos 7:14)
  • How God uses ordinary people whose hearts are turned toward Him
  • A warning delivered in a season of peace and prosperity (~800 BC, Jeroboam II)
  • The "for three sins, even for four" pattern — and why the crowd cheered
  • The turn: when Amos named the sins of God's own people (Amos 2:6)
  • Justice for the poor, compromise, and worship without the heart (Isaiah 29:13)
  • Living in the world but not of it (1 John 2:15)
  • Scripture: Amos 1–4; 7:14; Acts 2:44–45; 1 John 2:15; Isaiah 29:13; Leviticus 20:26

Next Steps:

  • Reflect this week: what would people learn about God by watching your life?
  • Pick one area — words, relationships, work, generosity — to live "set apart" this week
  • New here or ready to take a next step? We'd love to connect with you, pray with you, or help you find a group. Start at grandpoint.church.

What if the messiest love story in the Bible is actually the clearest picture of how God loves you? This week on The Voice, we open the book of Hosea — the prophet God asked to marry, lose, and then buy back an unfaithful wife. It's a living portrait of relentless, pursuing love that points all the way to the cross. We'll talk about spiritual adultery, the cost of being purchased back, and why no one is ever beyond God's reach. Listen in, stick around for next steps, and be encouraged.

Show Notes:

  • Series: The Voice — a summer walk through the Minor Prophets
  • This week's book: Hosea, the oldest of "the 12"
  • Big idea: God has set His love on you, and that love cost Him everything.
  • Two truths about God's love:
    1. He has set His love on you — He will not let you go (Hosea 11:8)
    2. It cost Him everything — Hosea bought Gomer back; God bought us back (Hosea 3:2)
  • Key idea: Spiritual adultery is letting anything take the place God belongs in — revealed by where we turn when we're afraid, stressed, or worried about the future.
  • Quotes worth remembering:
    • "The affections of a man cannot be idle; if they do not go out to God, they leak out to worldly things." — A.W. Pink
    • "The pursuing love of God is the greatest wonder in the spiritual universe." — Donald Grey Barnhouse
    • "'Them' always has the potential to be 'us.'"
  • Scripture: Hosea 1:2 · 2:5 · 3:1 · 3:2 · 5:13 · 11:8 (NLT)

Next Steps:

  1. Respond. A simple prayer of surrender, right where you are, is enough to begin.
  2. Connect. New or exploring faith? We'd love to meet you — start at grandpoint.church.
  3. Go deeper. Catch the rest of The Voice series and share this episode with someone who needs to hear that they're not out of reach.

The Book of Joel reads almost like a horror story — round after round of locusts stripping the land bare. But it doesn't end that way. In this episode, we launch The Voice, our summer series through the Minor Prophets, with a message on the Book of Joel called "From Horror to Hope."

We walk through the locust plague as a divine wake-up call, the urgency of the "Day of the Lord," the beautiful invitation to "return to me with all your heart," and God's stunning promise: "I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten" (Joel 2:25). Along the way we ask the question Joel forces on every generation — what would it take for God to wake you up? — and we land on the hope that holds it all together: a God who came to dwell with us in Jesus.

Whether you're walking through a season that feels like a nightmare or simply longing for an awakening, this message is an invitation to wake up, return, and let God make all things new.

Show Notes

Scripture referenced:

  • Joel 1:1–14 — the locusts and the call to wake up
  • Joel 2:1, 11 — the Day of the Lord
  • Joel 2:12–17 — "Even now… return to me with all your heart"
  • Joel 2:13 — "gracious and compassionate, slow to anger" (cf. Exodus 34:6)
  • Joel 2:18, 25 — God's pity and restoration
  • Joel 2:28–32 — the Spirit poured out on all people
  • Joel 3:21 — "The Lord dwells in Zion"
  • 2 Corinthians 6:2; Acts 2; John 1:14; Revelation 21

Key takeaways:

  1. The minor prophets were minor in size, major in message — and the voice behind them is God's.
  2. The "locusts" in our lives can be a wake-up call; awakenings begin when we stop pretending everything is fine.
  3. Repentance is rending the heart, not the garments — returning to God honestly and completely.
  4. God restores not only what was lost, but the years the locusts have eaten (Joel 2:25).
  5. Repentance and revival belong together. There's no lasting revival without real repentance.

Notable quote: "The locusts don't get the final word. God does."

Next Steps (Highlight in the Episode)

  • Respond: Is God using something in your life to wake you up? Don't ignore it — bring it to Him this week.

Romans 8 ends with some of the most quoted verses in the entire Bible — but familiarity doesn't always mean understanding. In this week's message, we take a close, honest look at what Paul actually means when he writes that "all things work together for good" and what it truly looks like to be "more than conquerors."

We sit with the gap between the promises we hold and the circumstances we live — and discover that the problem isn't the promise. It's the definition of good we've been working from.

📖 Scripture: Romans 8:28–39 (NIV)

Topics covered this week:

  • Why Romans 8:28 can feel hollow in hard seasons — and what we're missing
  • The difference between your expected outcome and God's intended purpose
  • Romans 8:29–30: what it means to be predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ
  • Why your salvation is also what the world needs from you
  • Romans 8:31–34: If God is for us — who can stand against us?
  • The connection between Psalm 44's lament and Romans 8's answer
  • What "more than conquerors" actually means for how you live today
  • Romans 8:38–39: the complete and final answer to everything that tries to separate you from God's love

Next Steps:

  • Take a moment this week to identify one area of your life where you've been living in a "Psalm 44 season" — and write down Romans 8:37 as a declaration over it.
  • Share this episode with someone who needs to hear that nothing can separate them from God's love.
  • Continue the study: Read Romans 8:28–39 each day this week and ask God to show you the difference between your expected outcome and his intended purpose.

Romans 8 is a chapter worth reading slowly — and this week's message gives you every reason to do exactly that.

Pastor Lawrence walks through Romans 8:1-30, unpacking the two great promises that anchor the chapter: no condemnation at the start, and no separation at the end. Between those bookends is a rich portrait of the Holy Spirit's work in the life of a believer — giving life, transforming the mind, testifying to our identity as children of God, and even interceding in prayer when we don't have the words.

This is a message about freedom that goes beyond forgiveness. It's about who you are, not just what you've been saved from.

In this episode:

  • The legal meaning of "condemnation" — and why it's been erased for those in Christ
  • Why the comma vs. period in Romans 8:1 changes everything
  • The Holy Spirit's role in winning the war within
  • What "adoption" as a child of God actually means for how you live
  • Romans 8:28 and the redemption of regret

Key Scriptures: Romans 8:1-30 | Romans 7:22-25 | John 3:17-18 | 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 | Philippians 4:8-9

If you've ever felt the frustration of giving your life to Jesus and still losing the same battles — this episode is for you.

In this week's message from The Gospel series, we open Romans 7 and sit with one of the most honest passages in all of Scripture. The Apostle Paul doesn't sugarcoat the Christian life. He describes it the way most of us actually experience it: a war between two natures — a desire to do good and a pull toward everything we're trying to leave behind.

We talk about why the Law reveals sin but was never meant to fix it, what the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde reveals about the battle inside every believer, and what it looks like to fight with the right weapons. We also land on the declaration that anchors it all: no matter how great the sin, God's grace is greater.

📖 Romans 7:1–25 | Galatians 5:17 | Colossians 3:9–10

In this episode:

  • The law as a mirror — and why willpower isn't the answer
  • Two natures, one body — understanding the spiritual war within
  • Walking by the Spirit: what that actually looks like
  • Active repentance, spiritual armor, and mortifying sin
  • Why struggle is evidence of spiritual life, not spiritual failure

Everyone serves something — the question is who. In Romans 6:16–23, Paul uses the image of slavery to cut through the illusion of self-sufficiency and get honest about a truth we often avoid: there is no neutral ground. You're either moving toward life or toward death, and the master you choose makes all the difference.

This week's message also answers three of the hardest questions people ask about faith: What does it mean to truly be saved? What does resurrection power actually look like in real life? And if you're lukewarm right now, can you lose your salvation?

Whether you've been following Jesus for decades or you're just starting to take faith seriously, this episode will meet you right where you are.

Show Notes & Key Takeaways:

  • Salvation isn't triggered by a prayer alone — it begins with repentance and surrender
  • Resurrection power doesn't just forgive you; it transforms you (Romans 6:5)
  • Everyone serves a master — approval, pleasure, power, control, or God
  • "Dying to sin" means no longer premedidating, rationalizing, or normalizing it
  • Your character is the collection of your choices — sow to the Spirit, reap a Christlike harvest

Key Scriptures: Romans 6:15–23 | Matthew 7:21–22 | Romans 6:3–5 | Revelation 3:19

Next Steps:

  1. Examine your master. What are you most enslaved to right now — approval, pleasure, power, or control? Bring that honestly before God this week.
  2. Practice conviction, not condemnation. The next time you sin, resist the urge to rationalize or hide it. Own it, repent, and run back to grace.
  3. Take the next step in your faith. Visit www.grandpoint.church to find out about baptism, small groups, and ways to get connected.

If you've ever wondered why the Christian life can feel like a constant uphill battle — even after giving your life to Christ — this episode speaks directly to that struggle. Pastor Lawrence opens Romans 6:1–14 to show us that lasting transformation doesn't start with willpower. It starts with understanding what actually happened to you the moment you placed your faith in Jesus.

Paul's message is urgent: you can't change your life if you don't know your identity. This episode unpacks the powerful "consider and present" framework from Romans 6, confronts the lies that keep believers stuck, and points to the grace that sets us free — not just from sin's penalty, but from sin's mastery.

Show Notes & Key Takeaways:

1. Change will never happen if you don't know what happened when you became a Christian (Romans 6:1–10)

Paul asks "don't you know?" three times — establishing that knowing the truth of your union with Christ is the non-negotiable starting point for transformation.

2. Change begins the moment you believe in the righteous identity God has declared over you (Romans 6:11)

"Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus." — Romans 6:11

This isn't wishful thinking. It's reckoning — choosing to believe what God declared even before you feel it. As with Abraham, belief comes first, and strength follows.

3. Change happens when you stop trying to make yourself better and offer yourself to the One who can make it happen (Romans 6:12–14)

"Offer yourselves to God… as an instrument of righteousness." — Romans 6:13

Two movements: Consider (your new identity) + Present (your whole self to God). This is how transformation flows.

  • Romans 8:28, 2 Corinthians 5:1, 2 Timothy 1:12, 1 John 2:3
  • Tony Evans illustration on identity
  • Chris Tiegreen on "life debt" and Romans 6:13

Next Steps:

  • Reflect on Romans 6:11 this week — write out the verse and read it each morning
  • Ask yourself: Which negative narratives about your identity do you need to replace with what God has declared?

In this week's message from The Gospel series, we work through Romans 5:12-21 — one of the most theologically dense and personally relevant passages Paul ever wrote. Two men. Two choices. Two consequences for all of humanity.

The word "one" appears eleven times in this passage, and Paul means every repetition. One man brought death into the world; one man brought grace that overflows it. Adam and Christ both acted as representatives for the human race — and the difference between what they did is what the Gospel is made of.

This message explores:

  • Original sin and the uncomfortable logic of Adam as our representative
  • Why Paul's "much more" of grace isn't just a recovery — it's an overflow
  • The first and second Adam, and what John's Gospel adds to Paul's argument
  • What it actually looks like to stop living from your old-humanity identity

Scripture References: Romans 5:12-21 | Genesis 2:15-17 | Genesis 3:1-2 | 1 Corinthians 15:45-49 | John 20

Next Steps: → Read Romans 5:12-21 this week and sit with the "much more" statements in verses 15 and 17. → Ask yourself: Am I living in Christ's new-humanity, or am I still defaulting to my old-humanity identity? → If you'd like to take a next step in your faith — connect with us at www.grandpoint.church

Most of us treat the gospel like a starting line — something you cross once and then move on from. But Romans 5 tells a different story.

In this week's message from Romans 5:1–11, we dig into three things that are already true for everyone who has been justified by faith: you have peace with God (not just a feeling of peace — the real thing), you have a reason to hold on through suffering, and you already have everything you need in Christ.

This episode is for anyone who's been striving to earn what God has already given, or who's in a hard season and wondering if he's still near.

Easter lands right in the middle of Romans 4 this year — and it turns out, that's exactly where it belongs.

In this week's message, Pastor Lawrence opens up the story of Abraham: a man who received an impossible promise from God and waited 25 years for it to come true. Along the way, he stumbled, he doubted, he took matters into his own hands. And yet — his faith was credited to him as righteousness.

What does that mean for us? What do you do when you're holding a promise from God but your circumstances say the opposite? And how does the resurrection of Jesus Christ change the way you wait?

This Easter message from Romans 4 is grounded, honest, and full of hope — even the kind that seems unreasonable.

📖 Key Scriptures: Romans 4:1-25 | Romans 4:18, 20-21, 22-25 | 1 Corinthians 15

Next Steps:

  • Reflect: What promise from God are you still waiting on? What would it look like to adjust your life around it this week?
  • Read: Romans 4:1-25 on your own. Pay attention to verses 20-21 and 23-25.
  • Pray: Ask God to turn your waiting from passive frustration into active, rooted confidence in his promises.

What would you put on your spiritual résumé?

In this week's message from The Gospel Series, we open Romans 3:27–31 — a pivotal passage where the apostle Paul answers four questions that strike at the core of human pride, self-reliance, and what it truly means to be justified before God.

The law isn't your enemy — it's a mirror. And when you look honestly into it, your boasting dies and your need for the gospel becomes crystal clear.

Two words carry the weight of the entire Gospel: "But now." After weeks in Romans establishing the depth of human sin and the impossibility of self-righteousness, Pastor Lawrence arrives at the hinge point of Paul's letter — Romans 3:21–26 — and unpacks six essential facets of God's righteousness. This episode covers justification, redemption, and atonement with clarity and depth, and explores why the Gospel feels too good to be true — and why you can receive it by faith anyway.

Show Notes:

📖 Scripture References:

  • Romans 3:20–26
  • Romans 1:17
  • 2 Corinthians 4:4
  • Romans 5:8
  • Mark 10:45
  • John 19:30
  • Hebrews 11:6

🔑 Key Concepts Covered:

  • Justification — God's legal declaration of "not guilty," plus the crediting of Christ's righteousness to your account
  • Redemption — Being purchased out of slavery to sin at the price of Christ's blood ("It is finished" = "Paid in full")
  • Atonement — The innocent sacrificed so the guilty can go free
  • Grace — God's Riches At Christ's Expense; favor given to those who deserve condemnation
  • Saving Faith — Knowledge → Conviction → Commitment

📌 Next Steps:

  • Reflect on the "Then / Now" movement: How has Christ changed your story?
  • Memorize Romans 3:23–24 this week
  • If you've never received the Gospel by faith — today is the day. Visit www.grandpoint.church to take a next step or connect with our team.

What if the things you've leaned on most in your spiritual life — your church attendance, your Bible knowledge, your Christian heritage — aren't what actually make you right with God?

In this week's message from Romans 3:1–20, we work through one of Paul's most searching passages: a raw, honest description of the human condition. No one is righteous. No one truly understands. No one seeks God on their own. And the Law — for all its value — can only show us how far we fall short.

But Paul doesn't leave us there. Because the same gospel that exposes our condition also offers the only real remedy: a righteousness we didn't earn, given to us through faith in Jesus.

You are not an old creation trying to become new. You are a new creation trying to shed the old.

📖 Scriptures Covered: Romans 3:1–20, Psalm 14:2–3, John 1:9, John 6:44, Ephesians 2:8

📌 Show Notes & Next Steps:

  • Reflect: Consider which "spiritual advantages" you may have been treating as a substitute for genuine faith. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you the difference.
  • Memorize: Romans 3:20 — "No one will be declared righteous in God's sight by works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin."
  • Pray: Use the closing prayer from this message as your own prayer this week — asking God to help you receive the righteousness that can only come through faith in Christ.

What's the difference between religious performance and genuine faith? In this week's message from Grand Point Church, we walk through Romans 2:17–29 — one of the most uncomfortable and convicting passages in all of Paul's letters. The Apostle Paul confronts the religious insiders of his day with a bold accusation: their outward religiosity was actually making things worse. Paul identifies four destructive patterns of religiosity — smugness, over-sensitivity, judgmentalism, and hypocrisy — and then uses the imagery of circumcision to make a radical point: God is after the heart, not the badge.

Whether you've been a church-going believer for decades or you're brand new to faith, this message will challenge you to examine not just what you do as a Christian, but who you are when no one's watching.

Show Notes:

Key Scripture:

  • Romans 2:17–24 — Paul's indictment of religious hypocrisy
  • Romans 2:25–29 — Circumcision of the heart vs. outward signs
  • Colossians 2:11–12 — What happens spiritually when you come to Christ

Key Themes:

  • The danger of religiosity vs. genuine faith
  • Four fruits of religiosity: smugness, over-sensitivity, judgmentalism, hypocrisy
  • The meaning of "circumcision of the heart" (Romans 2:29; Colossians 2:11)
  • Seven markers of genuine, transformed faith
  • The prodigal son — and why both sons needed the Father's grace

Resource Referenced:

  • Romans for You by Tim Keller
  • How Leaders Lose Their Way by Peter Greer

Next Steps:

  1. Examine your faith honestly — Work through the seven markers of genuine faith mentioned in this message. Ask someone who knows you well if they see evidence of Christ's transformation in your life.
  2. Consider baptism — If you've trusted Christ but haven't been baptized, baptism is the next step of obedience. Reach out at grandpoint.church to learn more.
  3. Come home — Whether you've drifted into religiosity or walked away from faith entirely, the Father's door is open. Take a step toward Him this week.

In this week's message, we take a hard look at Romans 2:1-16 — a passage that confronts the self-righteous tendency in all of us who are quick to judge the world while ignoring our own hearts.

We explore four truths about God's judgment: it rightly falls on hypocrites, it is stored up for those who presume on His kindness, it is rendered impartially, and it will expose the secrets of every heart. But in the middle of all of this, there is breathtaking hope — the One who will one day judge us is the same One who died in our place.

Key Scriptures: Romans 2:1-16 | Ephesians 2:4-7

Next Steps:

  • Ask yourself honestly: Am I pointing fingers while practicing the same things?
  • Are you presuming on God's patience without taking steps to change?
  • If you were accused of being a Christian today, would there be evidence?
  • Is there a secret you need to bring to the light? Confession is the doorway.
  • Repentance is simply choosing a different route. What would that look like for you this week?

In this week's message, Pastor Lawrence digs into Romans 1:18-32 to show us that the best news ever actually starts with some bad news. God — the Great Physician — has given us a clear diagnosis: our world is sick, and we are the cause. But understanding what's wrong is the first step to receiving what's right.

This episode explores the wrath of God (and why it's actually a sign of His goodness), two forms of truth suppression, what it means when "God gave them up," and why the gospel is truly good news for every kind of sinner — regardless of background, struggle, or story.

What's preventing you from becoming everything God created you to be? This week's message challenges us to identify the ONE THING we need to let go of in order to press forward into the life Christ has for us.

The Apostle Paul, despite his impressive religious credentials and painful past experiences, made a powerful declaration: "One thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining toward what lies ahead." This isn't about erasing our memories—it's about refusing to let our past define our future.

In this compelling message, you'll discover:

  • Why unforgiveness hurts you more than the person you won't forgive
  • The crucial difference between experiencing failure and being a failure
  • How Louis Zamperini's encounter with Christ transformed vengeance into radical forgiveness
  • The two essential movements required for spiritual progress
  • Why pressing forward looks more like surrender than conquest

Key Scriptures Referenced: Philippians 3:2, 3:7-11, 3:13-14 | Mark 10:21 | Luke 10:41 | John 9:25 | Psalm 27:4

Next Steps:

  1. Identify the ONE THING from your past that's holding you back
  2. Make the decision today to release it through forgiveness and surrender
  3. Share your story of breakthrough with someone who needs hope
  4. Join us next weekend as we begin a new series

Is God calling you to let go of something today? Unforgiveness? Past failures? Fear of the unknown? In one bold stroke, forgiveness obliterates the past and permits us to enter the land of new beginnings. What are you willing to release to claim the freedom Jesus died to give you?

What's the one gift you'd ask for above all others? In Psalm 27, King David reveals his ultimate request—and it changes everything.

Surrounded by enemies, facing betrayal, and dealing with impossible circumstances, David could have asked God for safety, victory, or vindication. Instead, he asked for the one thing that transcends all of life's chaos: God's presence.

In this episode of Weekend Messages at Grand Point Church, Pastor Doug Benedict unpacks Psalm 27 and challenges us to examine our own hearts: How much do we truly desire God's presence? Have we made our home in Him, or are we too busy "working the fields" of Christian service?

In This Episode:

  • David's profound "one thing" request in the midst of crisis
  • Why the presence of God is the safest space for the human soul
  • The three key actions of dwelling: Dwell, Gaze, and Seek
  • Recovering "holy attention" in our distracted world
  • How David asked for presence, but God gave something better—a Person
  • The invitation to "come home" to Jesus, wherever you are in your journey
  • Practical steps to make your home in God as He makes His home in you

Key Scripture: Psalm 27 (full chapter)

Big Idea: We find our home with God, when He makes His home in us!

Featured Quote:
"The presence of Jesus is the safest space for your soul. So, DWELL in Him, Church… Come Home."

"One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see."

What do you really KNOW about Jesus? In this compelling exploration of John 9, we discover three profound journeys that reveal what it means to truly "see" Christ.

Join us as we examine the healing of a man born blind and uncover how three different groups responded to the same miracle—some moving from blindness to sight, others tragically moving from sight to blindness.

In This Episode:

THE DISCIPLES' PERSPECTIVE: Discover why we must become blind to our religious formulas before we can see God's compassionate purposes. Learn how theological systems can actually blind us to the people right in front of us.

THE BLIND MAN'S TESTIMONY: Experience the transformative power of simple, personal testimony. His journey from physical blindness to spiritual sight—and ultimately to worship—shows us that personal experience of Jesus matters more than perfect theology.

THE PHARISEES' WARNING: Understand the greatest danger facing believers today—being so confident we "see" that we become spiritually blind. Their tragic descent reveals warning signs we all need to recognize.

Key Scriptures Explored:

  • John 9:2-3 — Moving beyond formulas
  • John 9:25 — "One thing I do know"
  • John 9:39-41 — Sight to blindness

Application Questions:

  1. What's your "one thing I know" testimony about Jesus?
  2. Where might you be like the disciples—blind to God's work because you're focused on theological formulas?
  3. Where might you be like the Pharisees—so confident you "see" that you're actually becoming blind?
  4. What would it cost you to testify like the blind man did?

Next Steps:

  • Identify your personal "one thing I know" testimony
  • Examine areas where religious confidence might be causing spiritual blindness
  • Practice compassion over theological commentary
  • Share your testimony with someone this week

What's the difference between feeling sorry for someone and showing true biblical compassion? This weekend, Pastor Lawrence unpacks the profound meaning of compassion in Scripture and challenges us to move beyond sympathy into life-changing action.

Drawing from the story of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10, we discover that compassion isn't just an emotion—it's a call to get physically involved, to risk our comfort, and to invest our resources in the lives of others. With over 2,000 verses in the Bible addressing care for the poor and vulnerable, this message reminds us that compassion is absolutely central to our faith.

Key Highlights:

  • The Greek word for compassion means "to be moved to one's bowels"—your very core
  • The Good Samaritan shows us what hands-on compassion looks like
  • Why removing poverty-focused verses would make your Bible fall apart
  • How 2.2 billion Christians worldwide can unite to fight poverty
  • The power of child sponsorship to transform lives and bridge the global divide

Featured Scriptures:

  • Luke 10:25-37 | The Good Samaritan
  • Matthew 9:35-38 | Jesus' Compassion on the Crowds
  • Matthew 25:40 | Whatever You Did for the Least of These
  • James 2:18 | Show Me Your Faith by Your Deeds
  • 1 Corinthians 12:4-14 | Many Parts, One Body

Next Steps: Visit https://www.compassion.com/sponsor-a-child/ to learn more about child sponsorship and how you can make a tangible difference in a child's life through Compassion International.

Prayer Request: Please join us in praying for Joelle, who will undergo major surgery on January 22nd to help control her epilepsy. Pray for the medical team, for Joelle's complete healing, and for her family (Stacey & Kevin) during the 8-week hospital stay.

What if you were doing everything right—following all the rules, living a good life—and Jesus looked at you with love and said, "You lack ONE THING"?

In this powerful weekend message, Pastor Lawrence explores one of the most challenging encounters in Scripture: the rich young ruler who asked Jesus about eternal life but couldn't release his possessions to follow Him.

This teaching from Mark 10:17-23 asks us to examine what we're holding onto that keeps us from fully following Jesus. The rich young ruler had wealth, youth, power, and religious devotion—everything the world values. He came to Jesus with the ultimate question: "What must I do to inherit eternal life?"

Jesus' response was both loving and challenging: "You lack ONE THING: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." The man went away sorrowful because he had great possessions.

In This Episode, You'll Discover:

  • The profound question at the heart of life: "Do you want to be something or do you want to do something?"
  • Why keeping all the commandments wasn't enough for the rich young ruler
  • How Jesus looked at this man with genuine love before giving him the invitation of a lifetime
  • The principle that you can't shop horizontally for what can only be found vertically
  • Why any invitation into deeper relationship with God almost always involves a choice
  • How to identify and release the idols that grip your heart
  • Jesus' promise for those who leave everything to follow Him

Key Scripture: Mark 10:17-23

Questions to Reflect On:

  1. What's your ONE THING—what stands between you and deeper relationship with Jesus?
  2. Are you trusting in earthly possessions or in God for your security?
  3. How much do you want more of Jesus?
  4. What idols grip your heart that need to be released?

Next Steps:

  • Identify what idols grip your heart and cut off their supply
  • Invest your resources—time, money, abilities—in lasting kingdom purposes
  • Say "yes" to Jesus' Presence, whatever it costs
  • Pray: "Jesus, I never want to make the same choice that the rich young ruler made—at any level of my life. I do say 'yes' to your Presence and always want to go deeper, whatever it costs."

Coming Next Week: Hear Jonathan's powerful testimony about how Compassion International transformed his life from victim of global poverty to kingdom minister. Don't miss this inspiring story of investment and multiplication in God's kingdom.

In this powerful message, we explore one of the most misunderstood stories in the Gospels: Mary and Martha. On this special Christmas Eve episode, Pastor Lawrence shares the powerful and often-overlooked story of Simeon—the elderly man who had waited his entire life to hold the infant Savior in his arms.

When Simeon finally embraced baby Jesus in the temple, he spoke a prayer that reveals the very heart of God: "My eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared in the sight of all the nations." He understood what so many in the Christmas story missed—that Jesus came to embrace ALL of humanity with God's love.

In this moving message, discover:

  • The profound moment when promise and fulfillment meshed in the temple courts
  • Why God is determined to come close to a broken world
  • How Simeon's understanding of Jesus challenges our own
  • What it means to embrace the world with arms of grace
  • Our mission to help others experience transformation through Christ

This Christmas, you're invited to follow Simeon's example and make a resolution to embrace the world with the love of Jesus.

Before Jesus could speak or walk, He was carried by ordinary people into the heart of the city. This Advent season, discover how God still chooses everyday people like you and me to carry His Son into our communities.

In this message from our "Go Tell It" series, we explore Luke 2:22-38 and learn from Mary, Joseph, and a faithful man named Simeon about what it means to bring Jesus into the spaces we step into every single day.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • How Mary and Joseph carried baby Jesus into bustling Jerusalem—and what that means for us today
  • Why God chooses ordinary people to carry extraordinary news into our cities
  • The powerful story of Simeon, who waited his entire life for a divine appointment
  • A practical DC Metro story about being obedient to the Holy Spirit's prompting
  • Understanding that God has already prepared people to meet His Son
  • Why the outcome isn't up to us, but our obedience is
  • A simple Advent challenge to carry Jesus to one person or place this week

KEY SCRIPTURE: Luke 2:22-38 | Romans 6:23

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  1. God chooses ordinary people like you and me to carry Jesus into every space we step into. If you're a follower of Jesus, you have God's Spirit IN you—and you carry Him wherever you go. Emmanuel means "God with us." Always with us.
  2. God has already prepared people to meet His Son. He goes before us. He prepares hearts. He arranges divine appointments. He orchestrates moments we could never plan. Your job is to show up and open your mouth!
  3. Someone in your city is waiting. Somewhere near you, someone is discouraged and waiting for hope, lonely and waiting for connection, hurting and waiting for healing, or searching and waiting for truth. God may be planning to meet them through YOU.

THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE:

Choose one person or one place to intentionally carry Jesus to this week. Grab our community blessing postcard (or choose your own location—emergency services, schools, medical offices, neighbors). Gather a few people and deliver cookies, coffee, a meal, or a simple gift.

While you're there, say: "Because of what Jesus has done in my life, I wanted to do this one small act to share Him with you." Then ask how you can pray for them.

Keep it simple. Set a date. And GO!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

  • Who is your "Simeon"—someone God has already prepared to meet Jesus through you?
  • What conversation or divine appointment might God be preparing for you this week?
  • How has someone else carried Jesus to you in your life?
  • What's holding you back from speaking up about Jesus in your everyday spaces?

A single thing you do today can affect dozens of people, or even hundreds. This is the ripple effect, and it started with the Christmas story.

In this message from our "Go Tell It" Advent series, discover how the shepherds' response to Jesus's birth created a ripple that continues today. Through the timeless parable of the Good Samaritan, we explore what Jesus really means when He calls us to love our neighbors—and why it's about being, not just knowing.

In This Episode:

  • The shepherds' unstoppable response to good news
  • Why Jesus told the Good Samaritan story
  • The difference between compassion and action
  • Simple acts that create powerful ripples
  • Why we need a Savior to love perfectly
  • Christ's higher command: love as He loved

Key Scriptures: Luke 2:8-20, Luke 10:25-37, John 4:39, John 13:34

Show Notes:

The Christmas story has a ripple effect, starting with shepherds who couldn't keep the good news to themselves. After encountering Jesus, they spread the word throughout their neighborhoods. They didn't need a program or training—they just shared what they had seen and heard.

Jesus teaches us through the Good Samaritan that being a neighbor isn't about proximity or knowing who lives next door. It's about who we are and how we engage with those we encounter. The Samaritan didn't just feel compassion—he acted, investing his time, money, and energy to help someone suffering.

The ripple effect of Christmas occurs when the good news of great joy is proclaimed and when we're neighborly enough to engage with people around us instead of just driving by.

Simple Ways to Create Ripples:

  • Pay someone a compliment
  • Comfort someone having a rough day
  • Visit a sick friend
  • Call someone you haven't spoken with in a while
  • Express sincere gratitude

The foundation of it all? If we could love perfectly, we would be perfect. Since we can't, we need a Savior. That's why the angel's message is such good news: "Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you" (Luke 2:11).

Loving your neighbor as yourself has been elevated to an even higher command: "As I have loved you, so must you love one another" (John 13:34).

Next Steps:

  • Identify one person you can be a neighbor to this week
  • Perform one simple act of kindness that creates a ripple
  • Share the good news of Jesus with someone in your life

What if the hardest person in your family this Christmas is your opportunity to be a hero? In this second week of our Advent series "Go Tell It," we explore how Joseph's incredible response to Mary reveals the supernatural power available to us for navigating the most complicated family dynamics.

Discover why Joseph—a righteous man who could have destroyed Mary under Jewish law—instead chose to protect her at great personal cost. Learn how God handpicked this carpenter from Nazareth to be the earthly father of His Son, and what that choice teaches us about mercy, grace, and family leadership today.

In This Episode:

  • Joseph's impossible situation and his righteous response (Matthew 1:18-25)
  • Why God's presence in you isn't meant to be entirely private
  • How Christ transforms marriages when both partners are surrendered to Him
  • The greatest contribution you'll ever make: who you raise
  • Navigating difficult family gatherings with supernatural love
  • Practical tips for spiritual conversations with family members

Key Scriptures:

  • Matthew 1:18-25
  • Luke 2:8-20
  • Deuteronomy 22:23-24

Reflection Questions:

  1. What would be different if we were as forgiving and sensitive to others as Joseph was to Mary?
  2. How does Christ's presence in you shape the environment of your home?
  3. Who in your extended family might benefit from your relationship with Christ this Christmas?
  4. What does it mean to love someone with "supernatural ability"?

Next Steps:

→ Identify one difficult family relationship where you can be a "hero" this Christmas season

→ Pray for supernatural love and grace in your upcoming family gatherings

→ Consider having a spiritual conversation with a family member (remember: make it private, address any elephants in the room, speak graciously, pace yourself, never give up)

This Advent season, we're rediscovering the power of the gospel—not just as the means to heaven, but as the driving force behind every moment of your life.

In this opening message of our Advent series, we explore one of the most profound truths of Christmas: God's good news is for ALL people. When angels announced the birth of Jesus, they appeared to shepherds—society's outcasts and the ultimate failures of first-century culture. But this wasn't an accident. It was God making a statement.

Discover why you need to understand the bad news before you can truly appreciate the GOOD news, what modern homelessness reveals about the Christmas story, and how you can move from being a receiver of God's blessing to a carrier of it.

In This Episode:

  • Why negative news captures our attention (and what that means for sharing good news)
  • The theological significance of shepherds as first witnesses
  • A pastor's eye-opening experience living homeless on Newark streets
  • How the gospel reverses every curse wherever it's found
  • Why "all people" really means YOU
  • The call to GO TELL IT everywhere

Scripture References: Luke 2:8-20, Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8, Romans 8:1, Matthew 2:6, Acts 13:47, 1 Corinthians 1:27-28, 1 Timothy 2:5, Genesis 2:17, Genesis 3:8

Next Steps:

  • Reflect: When have you felt invisible or forgotten? How did God reach you?
  • Pray: Ask God to show you someone who needs to hear the good news
  • Share: Move from being a receiver to a carrier of the blessing
  • Join Us: Continue with our Advent series each week

What if biblical vision isn't about creating something new, but about seeing what God is already doing and joining Him in that work? In this powerful message, we wrap up our "To Live is Christ" series from Philippians 4 and explore how contentment, strength, and provision in Christ lead us to discover our unique "one thing" for 2026. Learn the secret Paul discovered about accepting all circumstances, doing all things through Christ's strength, and trusting God's provision through generous giving. Plus, discover what happens when urgent needs meet your unique ability—and how your one contribution might change eternity for many.

📖 Key Scriptures Referenced:

  • John 4:35 - Open your eyes to the harvest that's ready now
  • Philippians 4:10-12 - Paul's secret to contentment in all circumstances
  • Philippians 4:13 - Doing all things through Christ who gives strength
  • Philippians 4:14-20 - Partnership in the gospel through generous giving
  • Philippians 4:17 - "Not that I seek the gift, but the fruit that increases to your credit"
  • Philippians 4:19 - God supplies every need according to His riches in glory

🎯 Main Points:

  1. Biblical Vision = Eyes Wide Open
    • Vision isn't inventing something new; it's seeing what God is already doing
    • The harvest is ripe right now in our communities
    • Opportunity comes when urgency meets ability
  2. The "All Things" Framework
    • I can ACCEPT all things (contentment learned through Christ)
    • I can DO all things (strength through Christ in every circumstance)
    • I HAVE all things (God's provision through generous living)
  3. The Secret of Contentment
    • Not a spiritual gift, but something learned
    • Rejoice in the Lord, present requests to God, let His peace guard your heart
    • Making Christ the theme of life brings acceptance of all circumstances
  4. Strength in Every Season
    • Philippians 4:13 isn't about performance or achievements
    • It's about accepting difficult circumstances through Christ's empowerment
    • Because of Christ, we can embrace need, hunger, and being brought low
  5. Generous Giving Unlocks Abundant Living
    • The church doesn't want your money, but God knows generosity frees your heart
    • Giving creates "fruit that increases to your credit"
    • Promise: God supplies every need according to His riches in glory
  6. From All Things to One Thing
    • As we close 2025: Commit to accepting, doing, and having "all things" in Christ
    • As we begin 2026: Discover your "ONE THING" God is calling you to contribute

Are you a citizen of heaven or just a visitor passing through? In this powerful message from our Philippians series, we tackle one of the most important questions every believer must answer: Where does your true allegiance lie?

Using the powerful metaphor of a passport—and a harrowing story from a recent mission trip to India involving a stray dog—we explore what it means to claim citizenship in heaven while living on earth. The Apostle Paul challenges us to examine our lives for evidence of our true citizenship.

In This Episode:

  • The significance of a spiritual passport and what it reveals about your allegiance
  • Why Paul warns "with tears" about fake citizens within the church
  • Four characteristics of bad examples (those who make themselves a priority)
  • Four characteristics of good examples (those who make Christ a priority)
  • How your daily life—not just Sunday morning—proves your heavenly citizenship
  • The sobering reality that you're always modeling your faith, for better or worse
  • Why this world should never feel quite like home to a true citizen of heaven
  • How to know if your name is written in the Book of Life

Key Scripture: Philippians 3:17-21

Discussion Questions:

  1. What evidence in your life proves you're a citizen of heaven rather than just a visitor?
  2. Paul says, "You are always modeling the faith, for better or for worse." What kind of example are you showing to those watching your life?
  3. Does this world feel like home to you, or do you experience a holy restlessness for something more?
  4. Take inventory: Where is your mind predominantly set—on earthly things or heavenly things?
  5. How does the reality of Christ's return impact your daily decisions and priorities?

Challenge for This Week:

Examine your "spiritual passport" this week. If someone could only observe your schedule, your spending, your thought life, and your conversations, what would they conclude about your citizenship? Ask God to reveal areas where you've settled too comfortably into earthly living and to renew your longing for your true home.

The Christian life isn't a sprint—it's a marathon. And if you're feeling exhausted, if you've stumbled, or if you're wondering whether you can finish, this message is for you.

In this episode, we explore Philippians 3:12-16, where the Apostle Paul—one of the most influential figures in Christian history—admits twice that he hasn't "arrived." If Paul wasn't perfect, neither are you. And that's the point.

Join us as we discover three critical race facts for running the Christian marathon:

  1. Progress Not Perfection - Why the goal isn't flawless execution but forward motion
  2. Forget What's Behind - How to cut the rope on the "garbage barge" of your past
  3. Reach for What's Ahead - Why the Christian life was designed for linear progression, not circular ruts

You'll hear the inspiring true story of Cliff Young, a 61-year-old potato farmer who showed up to a 543-mile ultra-marathon in overalls and galoshes—and won. You'll learn about Beth Anne DeCiantis, who crawled across the Olympic qualifying finish line on her hands and knees with three seconds to spare.

And you'll be reminded that even if you've fallen, even if you've struggled, even if you're exhausted—you can get up, and you need to get up, because all of us are rooting for you.

IN THIS EPISODE:

  • Why Paul used athletic imagery throughout his letters (1:30)
  • The powerful illustration of church as a spiritual "aid station" (6:45)
  • What "forgetting what lies behind" actually means (and doesn't mean) (19:20)
  • The garbage barge metaphor that will change how you think about the past (24:10)
  • How unforgiveness and bitterness slow your spiritual progress (26:30)
  • Three questions to evaluate where you are in the race (34:00)
  • The incredible Cliff Young story and what it teaches about endurance (43:15)
  • Hebrews 12:1-2 and practical next steps (51:40)

KEY SCRIPTURES:

  • Philippians 3:12-16 (Primary Text)
  • Hebrews 12:1-2
  • 1 Corinthians 9:24-26
  • 2 Timothy 4:7
  • Galatians 5:7
  • Ephesians 6:12

QUOTES FROM THIS MESSAGE:

"The goal is progress, not perfection. You will never win the race by being content or satisfied with where you are."

"Unforgiveness, bitterness, hatred, selfishness, or any other sin is like a garbage barge that you have been towing behind the ship of your life. Cut the rope that connects you to that garbage and watch it fall behind you. Let it go!"

"The Christian life was never intended to be stagnant. It was never meant to be the same old, same old, status quo existence. It was designed for linear progression that constantly moves us to new heights of intimacy with Jesus Christ."

"Even if you've fallen, even if you've struggled, even if you're exhausted, we don't want to see you eliminated. We want to see you invigorated and motivated to keep going."

REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

  1. What "garbage barge" from your past do you need to cut loose today?
  2. Where do you see God calling you to make progress (not perfection) in your spiritual life?
  3. How can you adopt a "forward-focused" mindset instead of constantly looking over your shoulder?
  4. What practical step will you take this week to "press on" toward becoming more like Christ?

NEXT STEPS:

✓ Identify one area where you're seeking perfection instead

What's the difference between being religious and being transformed? • Luke 14:26-27 - Cost of discipleship
  • John 15 - Abiding in the vine

  • The Role of Internal Fuel (Resurrection Power)

  • Regeneration and New Birth in Christ

Resources Mentioned:

  3. How can you experience the resurrection power of Jesus more fully this week?
  4. Where is God calling you to value His mission more than your comfort?

FEATURED QUOTE:

What if the key to experiencing more joy in your life isn't adding more to your plate, but letting go of something you've been holding onto? In this episode from our "To Live is Christ" series, we dive into one of the most practical and challenging passages in all of Scripture: Philippians 2:1-11.

Discover why the Apostle Paul considered disunity a greater threat to the early church than persecution, and how the same issue threatens our relationships, families, and churches today. We'll unpack the surprising connection between pride and insecurity, explore what true biblical humility really means, and examine the ultimate example of humility in Jesus Christ.

Key Scriptures:

  • Philippians 2:1-11 (main passage)
  • John 1:1-5
  • Isaiah 6:1-5
  • Psalm 95:6-7
  • 1 Corinthians 11:23-29

Practical Application: This week, identify one relationship where pride (either obvious or in the form of insecurity) is creating distance or conflict. Practice placing that person's interests above your own in one specific way. Notice how worship and humility work together to transform your perspective.

In this powerful message from Philippians 1:27-30, we explore what it means to conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. The Apostle Paul, writing from prison, challenges believers to live as citizens of Heaven, standing firm on the spiritual battlefield without fear of opposition.

Key Takeaways:

  • To Live Is Christ - Now Live Like It: Paul's famous declaration isn't just theology; it's a call to align our daily actions with our eternal identity
  • Citizens of Heaven: Understanding our primary citizenship changes how we navigate earthly life and priorities

  • You Are Meant to Be Used: God doesn't need extraordinary people; He uses faithful, ordinary believers willing to say yes
  • The Gospel Cannot Be Stopped: No opposition, suffering, or setback can prevent the advancement of God's kingdom

Scripture References:

  • Philippians 1:24-30
  • Ephesians 6:12
  • Romans 8:18

Show Notes:

📖 Scripture Focus: Philippians 1:19-26 🎯

Key Verse: Philippians 1:21 - "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."

🔑 Key Points:

1. A Purposeful Ministry Always Seeks to Exalt Christ (Phil 1:19-20)

  • The word "exalted" means to magnify or make great
  • We make God small when we're afraid or worry
  • We magnify God through trust, courage, and meaningful worship

2. A Purposeful Ministry Always Expects Fruitful Labor (Phil 1:21-22)

  • Paul expected productivity, not just possibility
  • Jesus said "I am the vine; you are the branches" (John 15:5)
  • God employs us to bear fruit for His kingdom

3. A Purposeful Ministry Always Includes Intentional Decision-Making (Phil 1:22-24)

  • Life presents difficult choices
  • Paul was "torn between" living and dying
  • Every decision should align with God's will

4. A Purposeful Ministry Always Results in Spiritual Growth and Joy (Phil 1:25-26)

  • Ministry should foster growth in others
  • Joy is a natural byproduct of purposeful living
  • Our lives should cause others to rejoice in Christ

📚 Referenced Scriptures:

  • Philippians 1:19-26
  • John 15:5
  • Matthew 28:19

🎯 Action Steps:

  1. Evaluate: Where in your life do you need more intentional purpose?

  3. Serve: Look for opportunities to bear fruit in God's kingdom
  4. Decide: Make choices that align with God's will

Ever wondered why bad things happen to good people? In this powerful message from Philippians 1:12-18, discover how the Apostle Paul turned his worst circumstances into opportunities for gospel advancement. Learn the life-changing difference between asking "Why me?" and "What for?" when facing trials.

Show Notes:

🎯 Main Points:

  1. Our circumstances might be God's plan for advancing the gospel (Phil 1:12)
  2. Don't waste circumstances by asking "why me?" - use them by asking "what for?"
  3. An effective witness prioritizes gospel proclamation over personal motivations (Phil 1:15-18)

📖 Key Scriptures:

  • Philippians 1:12-18 (Primary text)
  • Philippians 1:21 - "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain"

🔑 Key Takeaways:

  • God can use any situation to advance His kingdom
  • Your response to adversity becomes your witness to others
  • Focus on the gospel message, not the messenger's methods
  • Circumstances are opportunities, not just obstacles

💡 Practical Applications:

  • Reframe your current challenges as potential ministry opportunities
  • Look for ways God might be positioning you to share His love

Struggling to understand how God's control fits with your daily choices? Wondering if prayer really makes a difference? In this thought-provoking episode, Pastor Brian Miller addresses three crucial questions about God's sovereignty and human free will that every believer wrestles with.

🔥 What You'll Learn:

  • How God's sovereignty and your free will work together perfectly
  • The real purpose of prayer (it's not what you think!)
  • Why God allows suffering and how He redeems it for good
  • Biblical examples of people making choices within God's plan
  • Practical ways to align your will with God's purposes

📚 Show Notes:

Three Life-Changing Questions:

  1. If God is in control, do my choices matter? (Acts 17:24-27)
    • God places us in specific times/places to make free choices
    • Our decisions either advance or hinder God's plan
    • Example: Joshua's choice in Joshua 24:15
  2. If God is in control, why should I pray? (Philippians 4:6-7)
    • Prayer changes our hearts, not God's plan
    • Jesus' example in Luke 22:40 - "Not my will, but yours"
    • Focus on relationship, not just requests
  3. If God is in control, why is suffering allowed? (Genesis 50:20)
    • God redeems suffering to fulfill His plan
    • Joseph's story: "You intended harm, but God intended good"
    • Jesus' suffering as the ultimate example

💪 Next Steps:

  1. Examine your prayer life - are you seeking God's will or your own?
  2. Consider how your daily choices impact others' relationship with God
  3. If you're suffering, look for ways God might be using it for good
  4. Make the choice to follow God's plan over your own

Key Verses to Study This Week:

  • Acts 17:24-27
  • Joshua 24:15
  • Philippians 4:6-7
  • Genesis 50:20
  • 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Discover what the Bible says about Christianity and other world religions in this in-depth biblical apologetics episode. Pastor Dan our Shippensburg campus addresses one of today's most challenging questions: "Are all religions the same?"

Drawing from personal experiences visiting a mosque, Hindu temple, and Buddhist monastery, Pastor Dan tackles the popular belief that "all religions lead to the same God" with biblical truth and scholarly insight.

In This Episode You'll Learn:

  • Biblical differences between Christianity and Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism
  • Why salvation by grace makes Christianity unique among world religions
  • How to respond to "all paths lead to God" arguments with Scripture
  • Practical evangelism strategies for sharing Jesus with people of other faiths
  • Biblical answers to tough questions about world religions and salvation
  • The exclusive claims of Christ and why they matter for eternity

Pastor Dan unpacks 1 John 4:1-10 to reveal three major biblical distinctions that make Christianity unique: God enters the world through Jesus, salvation redeems rather than escapes the physical world, and salvation is a gift rather than something we earn through religious works.

This episode also addresses the difficult theological question of what happens to those who never hear the gospel, providing biblical answers that honor both God's justice and mercy.

Perfect for Christians seeking biblical answers about world religions, those interested in Christian apologetics, or anyone questioning whether all religions are the same. This message will challenge your thinking while equipping you to share the gospel with love, understanding, and genuine relationship.

This week we explore one of the most common questions from our congregation: What does the Bible say about tattoos and piercings? We start by establishing the authority and reliability of Scripture, then dive into the only verse that explicitly mentions tattoos—Leviticus 19:28.

Discover why understanding biblical context is crucial and learn the principle that "the Bible is written for us, not to us." We'll unpack how the Old Testament laws were given to separate the Israelites from pagan practices, and how Jesus fulfilled the law, freeing us from ceremonial restrictions.

The real question isn't whether you can get a tattoo, but why you want one. We'll discuss practical guidelines for Christians considering body art, including considerations about artisanship, permanence, witness, and heart motives. This episode will help you navigate cultural decisions through a biblical worldview with both grace and wisdom.

In this powerful message, Pastor Lawrence explores the biblical significance of remembrance in our spiritual journey. Drawing from Joshua 4:1-9, we discover God's instructions for creating physical memorials and their spiritual significance in our lives today. Learn how intentional remembrance keeps us connected to God's faithfulness and transforms how we live out our faith.

Key Points:

  • God intentionally designed our minds with memory so we would not forget His faithfulness
  • Throughout Scripture, God commanded His people to create memorials to remember His mighty works
  • The Bible contains numerous calls to remember God's deliverance, guidance, and provision

Three Ways to Remember God's Work:

  1. Be intentional about creating memorials in your life
  2. Use those memorials to teach your children about God's power and mercy
  3. Let your own life become a memorial to God's powerful work

Scripture References:

  • Joshua 4:1-9 (The memorial stones at the Jordan River)
  • Deuteronomy 6:12, 8:11-14 (Warnings against forgetting the Lord)
  • Proverbs 22:6 (Training children in God's ways)
  • Matthew 5:14 (Being a light to the world)

Bottom Line: Our lives should be monuments to God's faithfulness. By intentionally creating memorials, teaching others through them, and living as a testimony, we keep God's mighty works alive in our hearts and in future generations. Pile up your stones of remembrance and tell the story of Jesus and His love.

In this heartfelt Mother's Day message, Pastor Lawrence explores the profound impact of motherhood through the lens of 1 Thessalonians 2. Beginning with a special child dedication ceremony, the service acknowledges children as gifts from God and emphasizes the community's role in raising children to know Christ.

The sermon examines three remarkable gifts that mothers provide: First, the gift of selfless love—a mother loves her child before birth and continues giving her very life to nurture them. Second, the gift of unceasing labor—working "night and day" without expectation of recognition or reward. Third, the gift of lasting influence—more than any other person, a mother shapes her child's character, faith, and future.

Through touching personal stories and biblical insights, Pastor PL encourages listeners to recognize the "I Owe Yous" we all carry toward our mothers. The message concludes with a beautiful prayer of blessing for all mothers, acknowledging their irreplaceable role in God's design for families and communities.

Whether you're celebrating your mother today or honoring her memory, this episode will inspire gratitude for the priceless gifts mothers give and the spiritual legacy they create.

In this powerful message on the Great Commission, Cressa Coldsmith examines what it truly means to "make disciples of all nations." She begins by establishing that this mission is backed by Christ's divine authority and explores how God's heart for all peoples runs throughout Scripture - from Abraham's call in Genesis to the multi-ethnic worship scene in Revelation 7.

Cressa breaks down the discipleship process into three key components: going (engaging with people where they are), baptizing (bringing people into the family of faith), and teaching (walking alongside believers as they learn to obey Christ). She emphasizes that while not everyone is called to international missions, everyone has a vital role in fulfilling the Great Commission.

The episode features special insights from Travis Helm about Global Reach's mission work across continents, and Cressa shares her own transformative experience serving in India and Bangladesh. She vulnerably discusses how God replaced her fears with confidence in Him, ultimately revealing that what we offer is simply the hope, freedom, and joy found in Jesus.

This message will challenge and inspire you to discover your unique role in God's global rescue plan, reminding us all that we never go alone - Christ's presence goes with us to the very end of the age.

In this powerful message from the "Now What?" series, we explore Jesus' Great Commission in Matthew 28:16-20. The sermon breaks down this passage into three essential components: the foundation (the church operating under Jesus' authority), the process (going, baptizing, and teaching), and the promise (Jesus' presence with us always).

Drawing connections to other commission passages (Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20, Acts 1), we discover that disciple-making isn't just something we do FOR Jesus—it's something we do WITH Jesus. The message challenges us to consider our circle of influence and how our heavenly reality should translate into earthly action.

Whether you're questioning your purpose or seeking practical ways to live out your faith, this episode offers biblical insights and reflection questions to help you embrace disciple-making as your lifestyle and purpose.

Early on Easter Sunday, Mary Magdalene and another Mary visited Jesus' tomb, discovering it empty after an angel rolled away the stone. The angel told them Jesus had risen as promised and instructed them to tell the disciples. As they hurried away, Jesus himself appeared to them.

This resurrection message explores four life-changing implications of Jesus rising from the dead:

  1. Your failures are not final - Through Peter's story of denial and restoration, we see that Jesus offers forgiveness and new beginnings regardless of our mistakes.
  2. Your life has purpose - Being "seated with Christ in heavenly realms" means believers can participate in Kingdom work with Jesus' authority and presence.
  3. Your life has power - The same resurrection power that raised Jesus now lives within believers, enabling them to live with peace, hope, and courage despite circumstances.
  4. Your death is not final - The resurrection story offers everyone a place in God's eternal narrative and the promise of life that never ends.

Jesus' resurrection isn't just an event to celebrate—it's a transformative power to activate in our everyday lives.

This week we dive into the powerful story found in Joshua 22—a moment when a misunderstanding nearly led to civil war among God’s people. What started as hearsay turned into assumption, and assumption led to accusation. Sound familiar?

We explore how miscommunication affects relationships—from ancient Israel to modern marriages—and how clear, honest communication is key to maintaining unity and trust.

You’ll hear:

• A timeless quote from Cool Hand Luke that still hits home

• Why obedience is a sign of relationship with God, not the basis of it

• How Israel almost went to war over an altar they misunderstood

• What it means to be a truth-seeker and not a rumor-spreader

💡 Key takeaway: Assumption leads to accusation, but communication leads to clarification.

This week, we explore the power of deception—how it operates in everyday life, in history, and in our spiritual journey. Our host shares a personal story about falling for a pyramid scheme at 17, hoping for an easy financial return that never came. This lighthearted yet insightful reflection sets the stage for a deeper conversation on deception’s role in our lives.

From military strategies, like the British army’s clever World War II deception, to biblical lessons in Joshua 9, we see how deception has long been used as a tool to mislead and manipulate. The Israelites fell for a deceptive scheme by the Gibeonites because they relied on their own understanding rather than seeking God’s wisdom—a mistake we often make today.

We also examine spiritual deception, looking at how Satan, the “father of lies” (John 8:44), operates subtly, leading people astray not always through blatant attacks, but through small compromises and friendly approaches. The enemy prowls like a roaring lion, looking for ways to lead us into decisions that have long-term consequences (1 Peter 5:8-9).

Key Takeaways:

Deception is not always obvious—it often appears beneficial.

Spiritual deception is real—the enemy disguises himself as an angel of light.

Consult God before making big decisions—Israel’s failure was trusting their own judgment instead of seeking the Lord.

God’s grace is bigger than our mistakes—even when we fall into deception, He can redeem and restore.

We wrap up with a message of hope—our failures do not define us. God’s redemptive power can turn even our worst mistakes into something meaningful. If you’ve ever been misled, made a bad decision, or fallen into a trap of deception, know that God’s grace is greater than your failures.

Closing Thought:

“Don’t make a peace treaty with the enemy—resist him, stand firm, and trust in God’s wisdom.”

This month, we're start a three week series called VISION, focused on three key actions: RESET, REFOCUS, RESPOND. As we reflect on where God has brought us this year and where He's leading us next, we’ll dive deep into the power of joy—finding it not in circumstances, but in God's presence. Through 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, we are reminded to "Rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances." Joy isn’t based on what we receive, but what we give. It’s about a steadfast trust in God, no matter what life throws at us. Let’s reset our focus, refocus on His mission, and respond with gratitude. 🙏 #Vision #JoyInHisPresence #ThanksgivingInAllCircumstances

Historically, Lent has been a time of self-deprivation, reflection, repentance, and renewal. The church has called its faithful to deny themselves for a season and to pick up their cross and follow Christ. As we do, we are reminded not only of our moral failings and the mortal demise they inevitably reap, but we’re also challenged by the cultural comfortability and the call to live differently as Christ, Himself, has done.

Live with a resolve to trust in that which matters most. Luke 4:1-13

Live with the freedom to live out God’s purpose for your life. Luke 13:31-35

Live with the pursuit of a repentant heart. Luke 13:1-9

Live with the unashamed love for the wrecked and broken. Luke 15:1-3; 11-32

Live with the desire to give all we have to God. Luke 7:36-50

Live with the desire to proceed with a righteous intent. Luke 19:28-40

Every new year well-intended resolutions are made by people just like us hoping to improve some area of life. Resolutions range from diet changes, physical exercise, financial freedom, business goals, and church attendance. But as we know, many resolutions are short-lived because we are thinking too big, not ready for the change, or we are not considering the “why” behind the resolution.

Whether church attendance and/or participation is a new resolution or a continued commitment, we are planning to begin a new year together by considering the “why” behind what we do. In other words, What’s the Point?

This series will include:

Jan. 07 What’s the point of gathering?

Jan 14 What’s the point of preaching?

Jan 21 What’s the point of singing?

Jan 28 What’s the point of financial giving?

Feb 04 What’s the point of serving?

Feb 11 What’s the point of communion/baptism?

Considering and understanding the “why” behind CHURCH is a simple, powerful, and actionable idea that connects us with the heart of God and his plan to redeem the world. We hope you can join us at the point as we begin a new year together being the church!

Questions Jesus Asked

What Do You Want Me to do For You?

Mark 10: 35-45

Spiritual Vision: the ability to see and take to heart the truth about who God is and what he is all about, and the truth to see who we are and what our purpose is.

"By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?” “How many loaves do you have?” he asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five—and two fish.” - Mark 6:30-44

So why does Jesus ask this question?

  • We tend to focus on the wrong things. Instead, we should be looking at what God has already blessed us with.
  • Having an accurate measure of God’s blessings highlights the magnitude of what God can do.
  • Jesus wants his followers to be all in.
  • Surrender comes first.
  • We all have something to offer.
  • God honors even our most meager offering.

What has God placed in your life that you have never looked at as a gift?

What are you clinging to that God is asking you to surrender to him?

QUESTIONS JESUS ASKED

“What is Your Name?” – Mark 5:1-20

Apart from Jesus, we cannot know our true identity - what we were made for.  One way to make sure you’re finding your identity in Jesus is to be aware of the things that keep that from happening. The Bible tells us that we have an enemy (Satan) and he “comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” Satan wants to steal our joy, kill the good thing God is doing in us, and ultimately destroy us. How does he do that? He tries to confuse our identity.

Your true identity is not found in a lie, but in what God has done for you. If you have received Jesus as your Lord and Savior…

  • You are loved
  • You are chosen
  • You are forgiven
  • You are redeemed
  • You are adopted

Satan declares war on our identity because he knows it is the surest way to wreck the relationship between us and God. Don’t let him do it!

Why are you so afraid? Mark 4:35-41 (ESV)

The Obvious
"
And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat so that the boat was already filling." - Mark 4:37

Three facts about storms:
1. Storms are unpredictable
2. Storms are amoral
3. Storms are revealing

The Hidden
"
And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” - Mark 4:41

Question: Who is Jesus to you?
· Friend
· Teacher
· Savior
· Lord

Action: Stop asking Jesus to compromise His lordship. Live in and under His authority and experience the thrill of His lordship, available in every storm that may come our way!

Did Jesus have a perfect family?

"While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” - Matthew 12:46-50  (ESV)

Faith is thicker than blood!

Matthew 10:34

Why did Jesus ask, ‘Who is my mother and my brothers?’

1.      He wanted to invite all people to become a part of His spiritual family.  Luke 15:1-32

2.      He wanted to clarify any misunderstandings about His mission.  John 4:34, 5:30, 6:38, 8:29, 17:20-23

3.      He wanted to shift our priorities from physical to spiritual.  Matthew 6:33

“Why Don’t You Notice the Plank in Your Eye?” Matthew 7:1-5

Jesus said: “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:17)

Jesus said: “How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:4)

To identify the plank in your eye…
1. Remember
2. Review
3. Relax

Why do you worry?

Whether we call it concern, worry, fear, or full-blown anxiety, none of us knows what the future holds. And there are question marks in all of our lives. But there's a difference between not knowing the future and worrying about the future. It's the difference between living in peace and contentment, or not. God wants us to live in peace, and you and I want to live in peace ourselves. So, in today's message we will discover how to transform our worries into peace.

Matthew 6:25 –32 (NIV)
1. Worry is inconsistent (v. 25)
2. Worry is irrational (v. 26)
3. Worry is ineffective (v. 27)
4. Worry is illogical (v. 28-30)
5. Worry is not Christian (v. 31, 32)

"Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand." - Philippians 4:6-7

Who do You Say I Am?
 Matthew 16:13-19
“But what about you?” he asked. Who do you say I am?” Matthew 16:15

4 things we learn from Jesus’ response to Simon.
1. Knowing Jesus comes from a personal revelation (Matt 16:17a)
2. Knowing Jesus is not inherited or passed down. (Matt 16:17b)
3. Knowing Jesus reveals our true identity. (Matt 16:18)
4. Knowing Jesus allows us to be used in incredible ways. (Matt 16:19)

What I believe about Jesus not only affects my worldview, it shapes the way I live my life within that worldview.

When we correctly identity Jesus for who He is, and allow that truth to shape who we are, it will drive us to holiness.

Who do YOU say Jesus is?

Thanks for joining us for our spring 2023 series, "I Am." From the very beginning of John’s gospel, it is clear that Jesus is God. John stresses Jesus’ unique relationship with God so people would believe Jesus was who he said he was. In the Gospel of John, Jesus claims His divinity by using the phrase “I AM” seven times, joining the phrase to understood metaphors – that are loaded with meaning to express His relationship toward the world and showing that He is everything we need.

Today's message, "I Am | the Way, the Truth, & the Life" is from Mike Iverson.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus claims His divinity by using the phrase “I AM” seven times, joining the phrase to understood metaphors – that are loaded with meaning to express His relationship toward the world and showing that He is everything we need.

Today's message, "I Am | the Good Shepherd" is from Pastor Lawrence Metzler.

Thanks for joining us for our December message series at GPC-Chambersburg called "Come, Lord Jesus." Today's message from Pastor Lawrence Metzler.

Advent Devo:
Today, we light the third candle of Advent, the candle that represents joy. Joy is not feeling, like happiness, that is dependent upon our circumstances or emotions. Joy is a gift from the Lord, and so is grace – God’s unconditional love for His children.

The family tree of Jesus contains some messy, embarrassing, and shameful material that seems to be intentionally included in the “Christmas Story.” The truth is, we have all had moments that we never thought would, or could, happen in our lives, and we certainly hoped the would never become public. When we read Matthew 1, we learn that Jesus came from sinners for sinners, which means nobody is beyond His grace. So today we pray, “Come, Lord Jesus. Replace my shame with your grace.”

Lord, may the light of today’s candle be a reminder of the good news and great joy of Jesus’ birth that we celebrate in this season. I pray that we would rejoice in You always because You are near and that we would go to You with all the burdens of our hearts, laying them down in exchange for Your promised gifts of peace, joy, and grace. Amen.

Thanks for joining us for our December message series at GPC-Chambersburg called "Come, Lord Jesus." Today's message from Pastor Lawrence Metzler.

Advent Devo:
Today, we light the second candle of Advent, the candle that represents peace. When our lives feel battered by storms and our days feel like a constant dance of one step forward, two steps back, our hearts long for peace. We search for anything that will give us a break from the crashing waves, and we attempt to create solutions that will calm the winds or help us get just one step ahead. But the peace we crave will never be found in anything we can do on our own. True peace, the kind that sticks around when the storms come, is found in our decision to choose faith in the face of fear.

John 16:33 offers this encouragement from Jesus: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” 1 Corinthians 14:33 reminds us that God is a God of peace. Whatever fear steals from you, God wants to replace it with peace that passes all understanding. And so we say, with faith that God loves us and keeps His promises, “Replace my fear with Your peace.”

Lord, may the light of today’s candle be a reminder to hold firm to our faith in You, our God of peace. I pray that You, the source of our hope, will fill us completely with joy and peace because we trust in You. Fill our hearts to overflowing with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. God, replace our fear with Your peace. Amen.

Featured Verses: James 1:2-4 and  1 Peter 1:6-7

Reflect

In your journal or with your small group, share about a moment in your life when “hindsight” revealed to you that what looked like something bad, actually turned out to be something good (e.g. losing a job led to something better; a setback in a relationship led to a deeper level of love and trust; the day your cat died your allergies improved; etc.). Trial will either devastate or deepen. What has been the outcome of trials in your life?

Today’s message is the third in our “Mud Run” series and has been one of our most requested. Pastor Lawrence Metzler shares the stage with Olympic long distance runner and coach, Steve Spence. Today’s featured verses come from  Hebrews 12:1-3 and you’re going to experience this Scripture like never before when you hear today’s discussion.

Finishing well is the accumulation of small steps in the right direction.

What is the next “small step” you need to take?

Today’s message kicks off our most recent series called “Mud Run.” Throughout history God has offered strength to help people persevere through even the worst situations. This message series will identify where our strength lies to make it through the mayhem.

Reflect

Take a few minutes and read Acts 2:1-4. In this passage, Luke describes what took place when the Spirit would first be received by those early believers. We believe that each person receives the Holy Spirit at the point of Salvation and at that point has full access to His power and ability.

What has been your experience as a Christian seeing the Holy Spirit move and act in and around you? Write down some examples or share with your Circle.

Today’s message is about looking on the bright side when we have our doubts. Doubt is defined as “a feeling of uncertainty or lack of conviction.” This definition seems to totally contradict what we know, or have been taught about faith. Today’s message reveals that no matter how strong our faith is, at some point we may experience doubt. But instead of being a sign of weakness, doubt can actually be something that causes us to dig deeper into our relationship with God, and can even make our faith stronger.

Reflect

  1. Many Christians who are very strong in their walk with God will point to the times that they had a crisis of faith or asked serious questions. Why do you think it works that way?
  2. How can doubt bring you closer to God?
  3. This week reflect on Psalm 10. What are some of the questions that David asked of God? What do you think after reading this Psalm, especially knowing that it was written by a man who truly loved God?

Today’s message is about how darkness is limiting in so many ways, but perhaps near the top of the list is the fact that it limits us from seeing. And if “seeing is believing” that means darkness might even keep us from believing. What is true in the natural world is also true in the spiritual world. Today’s message is centered on pushing back the darkness and allowing us to see the bright side of the Easter story – the resurrected Christ.

Featured Scripture: John 12:9-16

In today’s message from the gospel of John we reach a turning point in the biography of Jesus. In John 12, the life of Jesus pivots from His public life to the events leading to His death on the cross. The final events in the life of Christ were not what His followers expected, but they were accomplishing what His followers needed. The reality is, Jesus is not the King we want, but He is the King we need!

Have you ever been disappointed when someone or something didn’t live up to your expectations?

According to Luke 9:51, why was Jesus going to Jerusalem? Read John 12:12-15: What were the expectations for Jesus at that time?

What would you say is the typical mental image people have of Jesus? In other words, what do people expect of Him? Has there ever been a time you’ve expected something from God but didn’t receive it?

In this message we learn that “Jesus is not the King we want; but He is the King we need.” How does that truth adjust the expectations you have of Him? Very practically, what are some of the things you want but don’t necessarily need? What are the things that you need?

How does the fact that Jesus is King change your Monday through Friday? How does it impact your friendships, family, and career? If Jesus is on the throne of your life, how does that change you?

Reflection Questions

  • Have you ever had a time when you needed a friend, and they didn’t come through? How did you feel?
  • Read John 11:1-44: What impacts you the most in this story?
  • How do you think Mary and Martha felt when Jesus waited two days to go see Lazarus?
  • How do you deal with waiting after you’ve prayed and asked God for something you know He’s capable of doing? What have you learned about yourself and about God during that time?
  • When Jesus finally arrived in Bethany, the way He responded to Mary and Martha was very different from what they expected but it was exactly what they needed. What does that tell you about the character of Jesus?
  • Death is a scary and uncertain topic, but it’s something we will all face. How does your belief in Jesus change your perspective on life and death?
  • Have you ever experienced something good, or life changing, as a result of going through a difficult or painful time? Share your experiences and then take some time to thank God for the good that came as a result of pain.

In today's episode we're getting into the 2nd message in our "Made to Be" series (originally recorded in March 2019). Episode 5 covered the first message about being made in God's image and today's message focuses on being made for relationship.

If you want a great song to listen to that goes with this message, we highly recommend "Reckless Love."

The feature verses for today come from Luke 15:1-7

Today we’re starting a new message series called “Made to Be.” God is one of a kind, with no beginning and no end. And everything God has created is unique and one of a kind, including people created in His image. Every person is an original reflection of God, and our individuality is a reflection of the character of God.

If you’d like to follow along with today’s message from Pastor Kevin Elworth, our feature verses come from Genesis 1:26-28.

Reflect
Take some time this week to reflect on this message. In a journal or with some friends, share some examples of how a positive, or negative, statement from someone else impacted what you believe about yourself. Reread Genesis 1:26-28 and write down or share three distinct truths from Scripture about your identity.

In the 4th message of our "Improve Our Serve" series we’re talking about what it looks like to be a secret service agent - not the kind that works in DC, but the kind of person who serves without a need for recognition. Today’s message from Pastor Lawrence Metzler reminds us that the motivation behind our serving is very important to God. Our “motivation” is the “why” behind our service – why do we do what we do?

Featured Verse: Matthew 6:1-4

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some of the safety rules (beware!) that you grew up with or currently teach your kids?
  2. Share the best “why?” question you ever heard from your kids.

Bible Study

  1. As a group, read: Matthew 6:1-4; 6:5-6; and 6:16-18 out loud and then discuss: What is the safety rule Jesus is exposing in all three examples of the Matthew 6 passages?
  2. What does Jesus call people who “serve” to be seen by men? What exactly is a hypocrite? Have you ever heard someone say, “the church is full of hypocrites?” What are some examples of that?
  3. True service is not about religious performance, it is about spiritual transformation. Based on that statement, what should be the “why” behind our service?

Application: Evaluate your private time with God. Is it your most exciting time of the day? Does it fulfill you more than the accolades of public praise? Do you even have a private time with God?
