Marilyn Edmond joined BAFTA Scotland to discuss her experience of directing her debut feature film Connect. This took place as part of Glasgow Youth Film Festival.
Marilyn Edmond began her career as an Assistant Director in 2010, working as a Floor Runner on BBC Scotland's ongoing drama River City. She has worked on a variety of films including Sunshine on Leith, Under the Skin and The Railway Man, to name a few. She has also worked on many TV comedies and dramas, including ITV's Benidorm and BBC's The Replacement. During this time, Marilyn was learning about the craft of directing. In 2015 Marilyn gave birth to her daughter who is the inspiration behind the name of her production company, Angel Face Productions, then in 2018 Marilyn embarked on her debut feature Connect, starring Kevin Guthrie.

Siân Grigg is a make up designer known for her work on The Revenant, Ex Machina and The Aviator. She received the BAFTA Cymru Sian Phillips Award in 2016.
In recent years Siân has worked as personal make up artist for the likes of Kate Winslet, Tobey Maguire, Kate Hudson and Leonardo DiCaprio and has also designed make up for films such as Ex Machina, Suffragette, Far From The Madding Crowd, Goodbye Christopher Robin and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
During her career Siân has won a BAFTA for her work on The Aviator, was nominated for two Guilds Awards for work on Ex Machina, as well as receiving nominations for an Oscar and BAFTA for The Revenant.

“Everything is awesome” may be a song title from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s film The Lego Movie (2014), but it could just as easily be used to describe the careers of the writer-director-producer duo right now. The pair, collectively known as Lord Miller, are on the up-and- up, bringing the Midas effect to seemingly every new film they touch. Perhaps a key to this success is their versatility, the ability to switch seamlessly between the guises of writers, directors and producers. They also seem to have an inherent understanding of pop culture and how to imaginatively use it to generate the greatest laughs.
That’s certainly evident in The Lego Movie. It was also a key element in the success of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009), the animated film that first set them on their current golden path. Outside of screenwriting, it’s hard to ignore Lord Miller’s other successes. Over the past decade or so, they have co-executive produced 17 episodes (and wrote two) of the How I Met Your Mother; they directed live-action comedy 21 Jump Street (2012) and its sequel 22 Jump Street (2014) and directed and executive produced the pilot episode of the golden globe-winning Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It must all seem a far cry from their days at Dartmouth College in the US, where the pair first met while taking an introductory animation course. This led to jobs developing Saturday morning cartoons for Disney, before they had their first primetime television experience creating Clone High (2000).

There is nothing quite like entering the dark and twisted worlds of Chan-wook’s films. Breathtakingly beautiful and, at the same time, deeply horrifying, his films are awash with expertly drawn characters, rich environments and nightmarish storylines.
Oldboy (2003) brought Park to international attention. The second part of a loosely connected trilogy, all themed around the concept of vengeance (the other two being Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance [2002] and Lady Vengeance [2005]), Oldboy expertly plays with the emotions and allegiances of its audience.
Park seems to take a gleeful joy in subverting his audiences’ expectations, slowly revealing hidden sides and agendas for his main characters and plot twists that continually surprise. For instance, The Humanist (2001) puts a surprising spin on the blackmail crime genre. I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK (2006) challenges preconceptions about mental health, set to a science fiction backdrop. And Thirst (2009) is not your typical vampire horror flick. He’s also not afraid to shock through the use of strong violence and sensually erotic sex.

Maren Ade, writer-director of Toni Erdmann, shares insights from her career, discussing character development, writing emotion and directing her own work.
Maren Ade’s first full feature was Der Wald vor lauter Bäumen (The Forest for the Trees, 2003) about a lonely teacher who moves to an urban school with unrealistic ambitions of changing the lives of her new pupils. Ade followed this up with Alle Anderen (Everyone Else, 2009), a sun-kissed portrait of love, sex and romance following a young German couple who find their seemingly unbreakable relationship severely tested while holidaying in the Mediterranean. Her third film is Toni Erdmann (2016) a fascinating depiction of an estranged father and his emotionally repressed adult daughter as he tries to re-forge their relationship in a unique and comic way.
An honest examination of the relationships between ordinary people seems to be at the heart of her work, all dealt with compassionately and through an unfettered window of truth, inviting the audience to form their own opinions and judgements.
Kenneth Longeran, writer-director of Manchester by The Sea, offers insights on his process and collaboration and shares advice for aspiring screenwriters.
Kenneth Longergan’s stories are predominantly engaging character-driven dramas that explore the minutiae of the human condition and its many challenges and complexities, in such an intuitive way that they can’t fail to sympathetically connect with an audience. Often provocative, always sensitive, his films rarely offer easy answers, they simply provide a profound and poetic glimpse into the lives of everyday characters. Born in New York, Lonergan originally tasted success on the stage, writing shows that would perform both off and on Broadway. His first film script was for Analyze This (1999), before deciding to both pen and direct his next feature, You Can Count on Me (2000). It turned out to be a wise decision, with the script earning him both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.
Margaret, about a young woman (Anna Paquin) who witnesses a bus accident and must deal with the consequences, was completed in 2007 but became mired in distribution hell. When it was eventually released in 2011, it garnered great reviews and more awards recognition. Sandwiched in between these two, he wrote The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle (2000) and worked on Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York (2002), the latter collecting both BAFTA and Oscar nods, with fellow writers Jay Cocks and Steven Zaillian.

BAFTA-winning and Grammy-nominated composer Cliff Martinez discusses his creative process and career spanning 25 years across film, TV and games.
As drummer for Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and later for The Dickies, Martinez’ exploration of new technologies eventually led him to film scoring. After his experimental tape landed in the hands of Steven Soderbergh, he was hired to score Soderbergh’s directorial debut Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Since then, the pair have worked together on ten films including Traffic, Solaris and Contagion.
More recently, Martinez’ credits include Drive, The Lincoln Lawyer, television series The Knick and game Far Cry 4, for which he received a BAFTA.

In January 2016, BAFTA 195 was lit up with images of leading actors and directors of British film and television as part of Lumiere London’s festival of light. Here the people behind the exhibition discuss it's inspiration and realisation on the façade of BAFTA's iconic HQ.
Award-winning Newcastle upon Tyne-based creative studio NOVAK, who specialise in motion design and immersive experiences, created the projected exhibition using images from BAFTA’s photography archive. Inspired by the the origins of 195 Piccadilly as the home of the Royal Society of Watercolour Painters, the animation was accompanied by a striking soundtrack created by Ed Carter and based on the classic sounds that helped define the genres of film and television.

Every autumn BAFTA hosts the Screenwriters Lecture Series, a chance to find out how the world’s leading storytellers do their thing. This month The Guru brings together three up-and-coming writers for a debrief.
