When you are waiting for an elevator, take a step backwards away from the door so that anyone on the elevator can get off of it before you get on. When you rush on before someone can get off it is not only inconvenient, but actually takes more time for the transaction to occur, not only negating your rush, but also giving the opposite effect - it is in your selfish interest to be polite and give people room.
