In the late 1920s, Newport high society loved to venture to Little Compton for jonnycakes served in rustic surroundings at the theatrical Awashonks Jonny Cake Shop.
Mary Elizabeth’s Tea Room and Candy Shop was one of the most successful, women-owned businesses of the early 20th Century. This culinary success story began with Mary Elizabeth’s flagship store on Bellevue Avenue across from the Casino.
This themed lounge, opened in 1934, was inspired by the legend that the Vikings settled in Newport. The Skoal Room helped convince locals and tourists that drinking was respectable and sophisticated after the repeal of Prohibition.
Christie’s was Newport’s oldest waterfront restaurant, adorned with photos and caricatures of the celebrities who had dined there. You knew that if Bette Davis ate there, it just had to be special.
