The MayNERD Files: Recent Episodes

Josh

I cruise the streets of AZ on a Scooter and Interview people. We will geek out over pop culture radness or current events. Mostly, I look to unearth facts about my guests seeing as how they are all interesting people. It’s a roll of the dice. Oh, and each interview is recorded on glorious analog audio cassette (appreciate the hiss) because retro is cool and I’m older than I look. Thank you for your support and I hope you all enjoy the show! Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/themaynerdfiles/support

Greetings, Gentle Listeners! Long time, no talkies. That is obviously my fault, for sure. Allow me to make it up to you. This week's guest needs no introduction because introductions are for Tolkien books and a slew of really overdone made-for-tv movies. I got to sit and have one-too-many with my guest Izzy who is THE morning voice of ALT AZ 93.3. As you will hear, we go into a hurricane of topics that had me (and most of the patrons of the bar we were in) blushing. I would say things went off the rails, but who am I kidding. That's what makes my podcast fun and my therapy bills expensive.

We cover a good amount of ground in this here episode so, sit back, enjoy a drink or seven and enjoy!

My guest Bourke Floyd and I go off on so many tangents it will make your head spin. Bourke Floyd got his start acting in the most excellent 90's film, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and it all went uphill from there. Or....Up a creek you could say.  Good times are had, drinks are had, side conversations are had......I can't think of anything that I would've missed.

Enjoy!

On this episode of The MayNERD Files I am given the distinct pleasure of speaking with my guest, Kurtis Skinner. Kurtis is the dude responsible for my incredibly rad MayNERD Files soundtrack. We talk about film scoring, working with Synths and garage band etiquette. I may drop a couple lame jokes, too.

Kurtis is a musical genius from Seattle who has been spending most of his life playing music in some form or another. He has scored feature films as well as short films. His upcoming musical project is his band, Dual Analog which will no doubt be amazing.

Today I sit with Nathan Blackwell. Sorry, SIR Nathan Blackwell (?) We talk alot about being an independent filmmaker, writer, director and overall solid movie buff. we discuss the success of the web series, Voyage Trekkers and just how important recipe analogies can be. Thank you for tuning in and enjoy!

Nathan began his career like many of his counterparts ... a manic eleven year-old running around with a camera, making terrible movies. He's since directed two low-budget feature films, four web series, nearly fifty shorts, and won forty awards for film making. In addition to his narrative work Nathan, also directs commercial and corporate video, for which he's won six Phoenix ADDY awards. He was profiled by the New Times as one of Phoenix's 100 Creatives, and his work has been featured on Ain't It Cool News, LA Weekly, and MovieMaker Magazine. His main non-film hobby is cooking, and really only pasta to be perfectly honest.

On Today's cast I am graced with the presence of P-Body, Artist, bassist for the band Elvis Before Noon, DJ, horror movie aficionado AND he even wore a Van Halen shirt to the interview! Tell me that is not rad! We reminisce about the glory days of Tempe, AZ's music heyday while suckin' on adult beverages. Are you going to learn anything from this? Chances are good, maybe.

Mr. P-body is an artist living and performing primarily in Arizona because he has committed himself to enhancing Phoenix nightlife. He’s most well known as a veteran DJ and musician but has also worked as a promoter and producer of fashion shows. To add more, graphic design and website construction are also examples of his affinity for creative endeavors. P-body is currently the bassist with the band Elvis Before Noon, studying photography and attempting to survive the state of our nation with his 9 year old daughter Jasmine and a male cat named Lolita (Huh? On today's episode my guest, Carrie Guy and myself discuss the importance of mental health plus suicide prevention and awareness. Plenty of resources are mentioned in the show and ways you can hopefully feel better in these uncertain times.

Resources: Association For Suicide Prevention: https://afsp.org/ National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255 Mental Health America: https://www.mhanational.org/ International Association for Suicide Prevention: https://www.iasp.info/resources/Crisis_Centres/

Carrie Guy is a 42yo crusader for mental health. After a devastating loss to suicide in 2011, Carrie founded an event in small town Central IL to spread awareness, fight stigma, and raise money for Suicide Prevention. Following the success of the first event, Carrie & her family realized the healing power of helping, and made the event an annual one. The V Run for Suicide Prevention has raised over $100,000 for the cause. Proceeds from the event go to The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and Mission 22 (for Veteran Suicide Prevention). Being a language nerd, Carrie asks that everyone considers using the term “died by suicide” when describing this tragedy rather than the traditional “committed”- this shift in language is comforting to many of us who have lost someone this way. For a wealth of resources, visit AFSP.org

Today's Episode of wonders features nerding, gaming, eating and a static noise that really adds to the tension. My guest is Rachel Camacho-McKee who is based out of Phoenix, AZ and is an animator, illustrator and a whole lot more! Enjoy!

Rachel Camacho-McKee: Illustrator, Animator, Maker of Cute Things! I'm also a D&D nerd with many hours of playing under my belt, and I still don't fully know what I'm doing, in life or in the game. But I'm going to continue to have a good time while I'm here! You can usually find me posting my artwork to Instagram/Twitter/Facebook, or knee deep in one of the following video games: Among Us, Diablo 2, Terraria, GTA V, wow the list is getting longer than I originally thought, there are more games but I'm done listing them. I only slightly miss being out in the world, but I also really like my husband and my computer and my dog and my house, so I'll just keep hanging out in our game cave for the rest of forever!

Today's episode I get to sit in a really creepy undisclosed location that looks like a bomb shelter and get to talking with filmmaker and award junkie, Adolpho Navarro.  He says he can quit anytime......Get help, man.

With thousands of films/videos and 60 plus awards, director Adolpho Navarro continues to create projects for the passion of the art of storytelling since the age of nine. Each production is completed with little to no budget while sustaining a high quality production 10 times the budget size. He wears many hats and has received multiple awards as a director, writer, editor, producer, cinematographer, and special effects artist. Adolpho received a scholarship from the Art Institute of Phoenix in which he received his degree in Video Production in 2002. After college he devoted his life to continue to create films in every genre to better understand each unique tone of filmmaking. With an average of 5 to 10 films a year spanning from full length to short films, Adolpho has also been a part of the independent film community actively involved with casting, judging, and panel discussions for high schools and annually partners with colleges such as the Chandler Gilbert Community College where he directs 2 films a year for the Acting For Camera 1 and 2 program. He writes, directs, and casts all the participating students attending the class to produce a final product that is then entered into various film festivals. He also mentors the next generation by sharing his experiences as a 20 year independent filmmaker with many behind the scenes videos featured on his YouTube page. Adolpho and his team have been recognized in various international film festivals including a 1st place Epic Movie viral video contest, national TBS network airplay on "Conan", "Overall 1st Place Best Film" in some of the largest film festivals in the south west such as the Almost Famous Film Festival, Phoenix Comicon, Jerome Film Festival, Phoenix FearCon, A Night of Misfit Films, The Wildbunch Film Festival, and The Phoenix Film Festival. With recognition's including "Audience Awards", "Best Script", "Best Art Director", "Best Cinematographer", "Best Editor", "Best Sound Designer, "Best Visual Effects", and a six time "Best Director" award recipient, Adolpho and his team continue to have fun creating whatever unique story that comes along. Adolpho has also worked for the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix as the Media Production Manager for the Marketing and Communications team where he has also directed and edited over 100 videos for the college. Under his direction, the department has received multiple Telly, W3, AAMC, and Creative Media Award from Cox Communications Connect 2STEM Awards. www.n-ragedmedia.com

This episode allows me to dig deep with the amazing photographer, Joy Ludwig. Good times ensue, as always while we discuss the weather which turns out to be cloudy with a chance of Russian Mob. Enjoy!

Joy Leonard Ludwig is from Washington state. In her own words: Married and moved to Alaska, then Germany for a decade, came back in 2011 moved several times then went back to college a second time to finish my BA. While in Phoenix I became deeply involved with the film community. They welcomed me in and helped me grow! Those connections grew my network, craft and understanding of how to be a cinematic storyteller. Directing was a natural progression of that passion. My first serious short film, Sam, screened at several festivals and was selected for Best Director at the World Wide Women’s Festival located in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2019. Now in my last semester and graduating in Dec 2020, I’m excited for my next chapter!

Today I interview Paul DeNigris and we go on so many tangents, you will forget what the hell we were talking about...Because I think we did....Maybe.

I know that we concluded that Dark Horse Comics should have been in charge of the Alien sequels.

Paul DeNigris is an award-winning filmmaker and visual effects artist with two decades of experience in making moving images for screens both big and small. Paul's body of work combines a passion for storytelling with a mastery of digital filmmaking technologies, and ranges from epic computer-generated adventures to intimate character portraits, from short comedies to feature-length film noir, and from commissioned video art installations to surreal rock and roll fantasies. For 15 years Paul was Professor of Digital Video at Tempe’s University of Advancing Technology, where he developed the digital video curriculum from the ground up. Many of Paul’s former students can be found in Hollywood working on productions like Ender's Game, Under the Dome, Castle, Avatar, The Avengers, The Wolverine, Pacific Rim and many, many more. Paul is now Professor of Post-Production in the New American Film School at Arizona State University.

On today's episode I grab a cup o' Joe with Mr. Sean Oliver. It got weird. That's good, though.

Sean Oliver is an award winning filmmaker based out of Arizona. In 2018, PHOENIX MAGAZINE named Oliver one of their 40 Under 40 for his unique storytelling style. Oliver cut his teeth as creator/writer on the celebrated series LUCIDITY: THE WEB SAGA, and has since won dozens of awards at various film festivals and film challenges. Notably, Oliver's short film NATURAL PROMOTION was selected as a winner for the RABBIT & ROGUE FILM CHALLENGE, and was screened at the LA FILM FESTIVAL in front of Elfman himself. Oliver's latest film IMAGINARY BULLETS recently finished a worldwide film festival tour and can now be seen across various streaming platforms. In addition to writing & directing his own films Oliver volunteers his time to IFP Phoenix as their Student Education Coordinator.
