October 31, 2017 marked the 500th anniversary of the Reformation when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg. Sarah talks first about this historic event and what led Luther to write those theses. Sarah looks at 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 where Paul reminds the church at Corinth what the Lord's Supper is really about. The Gospel text from John 13:21-32 is similar in that it takes place at Jesus' last supper with his disciples, where he instituted the Lord's Supper, but in these verses he is speaking of his upcoming death, specifically of Judas, who is set to betray Jesus.

Sarah discusses the first 2 of the 4 texts assigned for the week of February 4th, the Fifth Sunday After Epiphany. First, in Isaiah 40:21-31, the prophet tells those who have been exiled that God will give them strength and will not let them falter, despite their having very good reasons to doubt and question. Psalm 147:1-11, 20c is almost a response to the questions raised in the Isaiah text, giving many reasons why God is to be praised, showing how God is present in the universe as well as present to us, in every aspect of our lives.

October 31, 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg. Sarah talks first about this historic event and what led Luther to write those theses. She then looks at the texts assigned for this Sunday, known as Reformation Sunday: Jeremiah 31:31-34, Psalm 46, Romans 3:19-28, and John 8:31-36. All of these texts speak in some way of the promises and presence of God and how we can depend upon both.

In Romans 5:1-8, Paul talks about how we have been justified through faith and the saving work of Jesus Christ. He also talks about hope and how our hope is rooted in this same work and the promises of God. In Matthew 9:35-10:8 [9-23] Jesus sends his disciples out to do the work he himself has been doing: preaching, teaching, and healing. He gives them instructions for how they are to do this and how they should respond to people who do not accept them.

The community to whom the book is written faces false accusations and slander for their beliefs. It starts by the whole earth blessing and praising God, then looks at God's saving acts with that community, and finally moves the the perspective of the Psalmist and how God has worked in his or her life. It also brings up questions of suffering and where God is during those times.

In 1 Peter 2:2-10 the author tells the community that they are like living stones, which make up the temple. It is less about where the worship and more about with whom they worship. They have all been made new in the body of Christ, and are called to proclaim God's word in the world.

Sarah discusses Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16, which is assigned for the 5th Sunday of Easter. Psalm 31 is an individual prayer for protection that transitions into a prayer of trust in God's refuge and protection. It tells of the psalmist being in great pain and distress, but still trusting absolutely in God.

Sarah discusses Acts 17:22-31 where Paul speaks to a group in Athens. Paul's words are about the God that Paul has experienced through the risen Christ. God, who has made all of creation, made us in God's own image, and therefore cannot be captured in inanimate materials such as gold or silver or stone.

This Sunday is often called Good Shepherd Sunday, and both texts involve imagery of shepherd and sheep. 1 Peter 2:19-25 continues the letter to early church communities in Asia Minor, and what it means to live as brothers and sisters in Christ. John 10:1-10 has Jesus describing himself metaphorically as both a shepherd and the gate to the sheep pen.

This Sunday is referred to as Good Shepherd Sunday, with 3 of the texts talking about sheep and/or shepherds. Psalm 23 is arguably one of the most popular and recognizable Psalm with it's image of a shepherd who leads his sheep to safety and comfort. Acts 2:42-47 is a transitional point in the story, moving from Peter's sermon on Pentecost to the workings of the early church communities.

In John 20:19-31 we hear the story of Doubting Thomas, who refused to believe in the risen Christ until he was able to see and touch his wounds. Was Thomas wrong to want this? Wasn't he only asking for what the other disciples had already seen? There is a lot to be learned from this story.

First is Genesis 7:1-5, 11-18; 8:6-18; 9:8-13, which tells the story of Noah's Ark and God's promise to never again flood the earth. Next is Proverbs 8:1-8, 19-21; 9:4b-6, which talks of Woman Wisdom, and might seem like an odd choice for the Vigil. Finally, she looks at Romans 6:3-11 which speaks of how when we are baptized we are baptized into both Jesus' death and resurrection, and why this is good news.

Sarah looks at the New Testament text assigned for the week of April 9th. In 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 Paul reminds the church at Corinth what the Lord's Supper is really about. The Gospel text from John 13:21-32 is similar in that it takes place at Jesus' last supper with his disciples, where he instituted the Lord's Supper, but in these verses he is speaking of his upcoming death, specifically of Judas, who is set to betray Jesus.

On this Monday of Holy Week Sarah discusses the Old Testament text assigned for the week of April 9th. Isaiah 50:4-9a is the 3rd of 4 of the so-called Suffering Servant songs. She then moves to the gospel text assigned for Holy Monday, John 12:1-11. In these verses Jesus dines with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Mary annoints Jesus' feet, and the chief priest begin to worry about Jesus' influence on his followers.

In Deuteronomy 30:15-25 Moses concludes his discourse of history and instructions to the Israelites as they prepare to enter the promised land. In this episode Sarah discusses the Lectionary 20 Old Testament texts assigned for the week of August 14, 2016. Jeremiah 23 addresses the difference between false prophets who do not speak God’s truth and Jeremiah, whose words are harder, but come from God. Psalm 82 depicts a trial in which the one being tried is accused of ignoring those in society who need protection: the poor, the widow, the orphan, the powerless.

Sarah discusses the New Testament texts for Lectionary 18, the week of July 31, 2016. Paul encourages the church in Colossae to put away their old habits and instead clothe themselves in the new clothes of Christ, meaning new ways of being in the world that reflect Christ’s teachings. The Gospel text from Luke tells the parable of a rich man who hoards his possessions only to discover he can’t take them with him when he dies. This text is similar to the Ecclesiastes text for this week but comes to very different conclusions.

Sarah discusses the Old Testament texts for Lectionary 18, the week of July 31, 2016. In Ecclesiastes the author declares that all of life is vanity regardless of our efforts. The Psalm is similar in that the author looks at the efforts of life and ponders their meaning. Sarah discusses if there is hope in these text and what it might look like.

Psalm 138 is a prayer of both petition and thanksgiving. Both texts provide examples of ways of speaking with God that might seem surprising.

Sarah discusses the Old Testament texts for the week of July 17, 2016 (Lectionary 16). Genesis 18 tells the story of Abraham and Sarah being visited by 3 strangers who bring them the promise of a son. Sarah looks at how God always keeps promises but that God’s timing is different from our own. Psalm 15 gives a picture for how to prepare oneself to enter God’s holy temple. Sarah talks about how we can use this picture to prepare ourselves for worship and for encountering and being encountered by God.

Deuteronomy 30 contains a command to keep God’s law always in our hearts and on our lips, and Sarah discusses what this means for our daily lives. The Psalmist in Psalm 25 seems to have this law in his heart and on his lips as he puts his trust fully in God, seeks God’s forgiveness, and yearns to learn more about God while following God’s path.

Sarah looks at the story through the lens of identity and what it meant for the man to be healed and given back the identity which had been taken from him.
