Hand-crafted soundscapes and nocturnal noise...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. ~ Aldous Huxley
All good music resembles something. Good music stirs by its mysterious resemblance to the objects and feelings which motivated it. ~ Jean Cocteau
All music is beautiful. ~ Billy Strayhorn ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've become addicted to drone. Again. I was the kid with his head on the piano, listening to the overtones die away, or pressing his ear to the steel hull of the ferry, enthralled by the sounds it created. I was the kid who formed wordless songs to accompany the sound of train wheels on a long journey, or hummed along with the fan on a hot day.
In the 60s I used to play my 45s on 16, or backwards, or by hand using razor blades as stylii.
I made cut-up tapes on a cheap cassette recorder in the 70s and experimented with reel-to-reel in the 80s.
Thank you Subotnick, Lygeti, Coltrane, Jimi, Mimaroglu, Eno, Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Throbbing Gristle...
I am not a musician. I am a scavenger of sounds. I use the most basic software to process those sounds, stretching and filtering until something emerges that makes a joyful noise. Or not...
Sometimes I have a story in mind, see the structure in advance. Sometimes the sounds take over and suggest their own story.
I had made a rather disappointing track which sounded a bit like a half-full oil drum being dragged up a gravel drive and was about to delete it when I saw this assignment and set out to create something I could use over it. Sort of make it the driveway for another sound completely.Something almost musical was created using ZynSub, then treated with ambient software, cut up, reprocessed and laid carefully (for me) against the background.As for the picture… I live in a mountain town, full of cockatoos. Nuff said.----------------------------------------------The Assignment: Combine two tracks.There is just one step for this project: To create a piece of music, combine two different tracks with an ear to how they give way to each other.More on the 755th weekly Disquiet Junto project, Give Way — The Assignment: Combine two tracks — disquiet.com/0755More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
I'd rather just listen to the noise.(I made this Followers Only, and nothing happened for 24 hours, no plays or feedback, (probably because I don't know how to use the system), so now it's public Thanks for being there, followers, some of you for many years now.)
Recently Jo Richter (sonic structures and silent stretches) invited collaborations with the track https://soundcloud.com/sonic-textures/draengelgitter-instrumentalThis isn't what I initially intended, but it's what happened when I improvised on the track using Audiobulb's ambient v1 software. Realised in one take with some minor post-production to lessen distortion and add some subtle (for me) reverb.Thanks Jo :)
Where to start? I assemble all my tracks in Audacity on my 15 year old PC and use every effect I touch way too much. For this one I picked reverb (specifically a plugin called Ambient Chamber on its “Space” setting), delay (always used irresponsibly and to excess), Paulstretch and Tempo Change.I stacked several of my recent tracks together and used all the above effects on them to varying degrees. (Bear in mind, most of these were excessive to start with.) Then I cut bits out, tempo-stretched them and used delay and a couple of other effects to get all the distorted disturbance - the crunchy bits - towards the end. In the spirit of the exercise, I tried to do this to excess, but may have fallen short…Is this “a piece of music”? Discuss.----------------------------------------------The Assignment: Do something you do too much even more.Step 1: Think about something in your music that you feel like you do too often.Step 2: Make a piece of music in which you double down on what you focused on in Step 1. Own it. Turn a crutch into a superpower.More on the 745th weekly Disquiet Junto project, Double Down — The Assignment: Do something you do too much even more — disquiet.com/0745More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
A bit time-lean on this one. I messed around with the sample, extending, adding reverb, converting with Harmonic Adder and ambient v.1, then spliced the results together.Tastier than expected. ----------------------------------------------Step 1: Download the recording at the following link. It is the sound of cocoa powder being mixed in a ceramic cup of oat milk using a metal spoon:https://freesound.org/people/disquiet/sounds/849399Step 2: Sampling the above audio, record an original piece of music that you feel sounds refreshing.More on the 744th weekly Disquiet Junto project, Cold Chocolate — The Assignment: Turn a shared sample into something refreshing — disquiet.com/0744.More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
Back in the dark ages, my early copy of Audacity was set up - accidentally, incorrectly but fortuitously - so that audio recorded on it would go into a reverberation feedback loop, controlled by the volume input.I used it during the recording of an interview with William Basinski (whose monumental Disintegration Loops are about to be re-released) in 2013. This piece, recorded in full but unreleased, begins with some of the resulting track, then uses extracts, stretches and cut-ups made from it. The sound sources are Basinki's voice and some short passages of his work.
Maximum Movement Theatre – Timeships~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Image: Lexica.art“We’re so self-important. Everybody’s going to save something now. “Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails.” And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. Save the planet, we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet. I’m tired of this shit. I’m tired of f-ing Earth Day. I’m tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is that there aren’t enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world safe for Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don’t give a shit about the planet. Not in the abstract they don’t. You know what they’re interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They’re worried that some day in the future they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn’t impress me.The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles … hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worldwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages … And we think some plastic bags and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet isn’t going anywhere. WE are!We’re going away. Pack your shit, folks. We’re going away. And we won’t leave much of a trace, either. Maybe a little Styrofoam … The planet’ll be here and we’ll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet’ll shake us off like a bad case of fleas.The planet will be here for a long, long, LONG time after we’re gone, and it will heal itself, it will cleanse itself, ’cause that’s what it does. It’s a self-correcting system. The air and the water will recover, the earth will be renewed. And if it’s true that plastic is not degradable, well, the planet will simply incorporate plastic into a new paradigm: the earth plus plastic. The earth doesn’t share our prejudice toward plastic. Plastic came out of the earth. The earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place. It wanted plastic for itself. Didn’t know how to make it. Needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old egocentric philosophical question, “Why are we here?”Plastic… asshole.”― George Carlin
I took the three main sounds that made up the original ice recording I did in 2012, I cut them up, mashed them together, repeated them at varying pitches with varying amounts of reverb to get the ticking clock sound (including its repeated accidental hiccup) and dropped in a few examples of the pure sound of ice in a crystal glass.A couple of shorter mashups and stretches were added.A mashup of all the ice sounds was then processed three different ways in Paulstretch and laid under the previous mix.Voila, with ice.----------------------------------------------The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.Background: Longtime participants in, and observers of, the Disquiet Junto series will recognize this single-sentence assignment — “Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it” — as the very first Disquiet Junto project, the same one that launched the series back on the first Thursday of January 2012. Revisiting it at the start of each January ever since has provided a fitting way to begin the new year. By now, it qualifies as a tradition. A weekly project series can come to overemphasize novelty, and it’s helpful to revisit old projects as much as it is to engage with new ones. Also, by its very nature, the Disquiet Junto suggests itself as a fast pace: a four-day production window, a regular if not weekly habit. It can be beneficial to step back and see things from a longer perspective.More on the 731st weekly Disquiet Junto project, Chill In — The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it — at https://disquiet.com/0731/.More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
As often happens, this didn’t go to plan, possibly for the best.Several stretched and treated versions underlie an increasingly chaotic mangled version of the track. That’s all.I played a lot of 78s as a kid (I still have many of them) so I love the old shellac crackle and hiss, which is why it’s featured and exaggerated.----------------------------------------------The Assignment: Rework a shared recording from over 100 years agoThere is just one step to this project: This week’s project, the next to last of 2025, is a community remix. In an act of globe-spanning asynchronous holiday-season camaraderie, we’ll all work from the same shared source material, a recording that dates back well over 100 years. Download the performance of “Nina” by Hans Kindler (1892 – 1949) and remix it and rework it to your heart’s delight. The recording credits G. B. Pergolesi (1710 – 1736) as the work’s composer, but more recently it has become attributed to Vincenzo Legrenzo Ciampi (1719 – 1762).More on the 729th weekly Disquiet Junto project, Community Remix (Nina) — The Assignment: Rework a shared recording from over 100 years ago — at https://disquiet.com/0729/More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
Continued...Rob and Jamilah cut their comms.“Shit! If that thing damages CyDar, the whole Lighthouse could go offline. Did you hear her intonation? She actually sounded apprehensive. It might take control of the whole station. How long can the automatic systems keep the place functioning if it cuts life support?”“Depends on the extent. Let’s not panic, Rob. We need to find out more about it. So far it doesn’t seem like a weapon.” She reached out and took his hand. “We need to work together, and quickly. We need to locate it, assess the threat, if any, and take consequent action.”He nodded and looked ashamed. “You’re right. Fear is the mind killer.”“What?”“It’s from a book, one of the greats from two millennia ago. I’m sorry, I forgot my training.”“I’m scared too. Let’s get to the Core and see what’s happened.” She smiled at him. “We can comfort each other later.”“Yes… If there is a ‘later’.”The outer security door to the Core had been cut open like the storage bay. They entered, passing through several more damaged doors until they reached the main core centre. The doors were open, undamaged.“Looks like CyDar just invited it in.”The core was a massive, circular system of mainframes cooled by liquid nitrogen. Half way up, the intruder was clamped onto CyDar. It was insectoid, with long legs that had wrapped around part of the core and a central section that served as both body and head. There were no lights or markings. As they drew closer, a couple of the legs moved slightly.“That is not a robot. Those joints look too fluid. Is it nano-engineered?”Rob shook his head. “Beats me. CyDar, can you hear us?”“Yes, Captain Hurford.”“Report status.”“It is of non-terrestrial origin. It is currently learning a simple binary language in order to communicate.”“You invited it aboard, didn’t you?”“Yes, I did. You ascertained that from the logs?”“Your redactions left traces. Careless.”“It was broadcasting what appeared to a distress call. The method of ingress was clumsy. I was attempting to guide it to a standard entry port but it wanted more immediate contact. Wait…”They heard a burst of binary code, then a reply from CyDar.“It has made contact.”“What did it say?”“Please protect me. I am scared.”------------(c) iamacamera 2022Image: Lexica.art
Continued...The Lighthouse was a deep-space station made up of huge, linked structures and located about ten billion kilometres from Earth. As a result of wars and economic collapse it serviced fewer ships than it had been designed for, so few these days that most of its two-hundred strong crew were kept comatose in several deep sleep facilities. They were revived periodically, ostensibly in order to check systems and maintain physical condition, but more important was the prevention of deep psychosis that could occur during extended coma-sleep. The whole crew was only woken when a ship was due to arrive.The section of the vast structure that Jamilah and Rob needed to reach was one that held several crew quarters and the huge, humming structure that housed the systems and servers that made up CyDar. Spinning slowly to create life-giving gravity, the structure was honeycombed by a series of mag-lev platforms that transported them to the designated area of damage in just under five minutes. The door was secure and the view through the doorscreen showed nothing.“Cydar, please pressurise sections forty-three A through forty-three D.”There was a long pause.“I am unable to comply, Captain Hurford. That section is offline.”They cut their comms and made faceplate contact.“What the hell, Rob? How much damage would that take? We’d see something, surely?”“Maybe. CyDar would have responded differently. She’s being deliberately vague, buying time perhaps. Let’s go in.”They entered the suspect section, sealing the door behind them. To their left was a long row of general storage bays, built onto the interior wall of the hull. They had only travelled about forty metres along the corridor when the reason for the damage report became apparent. The door to area forty-three nineteen was warped, scorched and hanging from one hinge.“CyDar, you seeing this?”“Affirmative, Captain McCullen. It appears to have been burst open from the inside. There is apparent heat damage. Not a meteorite, that would have penetrated further.”“Agreed. It would probably have gone right through the station.”They reached the door and looked into the bay. A blackened, scored tubular object about two metres long was buried in the deck at an angle. A ring of extendable spokes had stopped it penetrating any further, bending the plates into a shallow crater. Half way up, a section of the tube was hanging open.Jamilah pointed up, past the tube.“Look at that. It punched through the hull and then stopped dead. Definitely not space debris.”“No, it’s some sort of drone. Not one I’ve seen before, either. And it had a cargo.”“An armed passenger, by the look of that door.” She inspected the tube interior and the floor below it. “There appear to be connecting points inside… No organic matter anywhere. I think it must be robotic.”“CyDar, some form of AI has invaded The Lighthouse. We are unsure of its nature, but it may be capable of deadly force.” There was silence. “CyDar, can you hear me?”“I have located the intruder, Captains.” There was a long pause. “It has invaded my central core. It is with me.” to be continued......(c) iamacamera 2022Image: Lexica.art
Incident On Deck Forty-ThreeThrough the black dome, CyDar watched as Hurford, R.J. #34-4563 and McCullen, J.M. #37-9863 arrived on the Lighthouse command deck together. Their files indicated a previous relationship. CyDar calculated that humans with an emotional bond would be an advantage.Jamilah McCullen checked the Situation Log.“There’s an incident logged just over eight hours ago, appears to be an impact of significance seven but no details. Odd.”Rob Hurford was scanning Engineering and Communication logs. “Several electrical and control systems have been automatically locked out and re-routed. That would suggest a hull breach. But there’s nothing major in the environment log, only a blip around the same time… suggests momentary tremor in a small area. CyDar, can you clarify?”The black dome pulsed with light from an internal LED. “Good morning, Captains Hurford and McCullen. I hope your revival has no negative indicators.” The voice was deep and feminine.“Aside from feeling like a two-day-old hangover, no,” said Jamilah. “Please report on the situation. The log is strangely deficit in detail.”“Admin Directive seven five three one states that two officers will be revived and will attend the command deck at regular intervals. Sequencing is random.”Rob checked another log. “This is not a regular interval. Human watch isn’t scheduled for nearly another week. And Captain McCullen has already served two watches on this tour. What about this incident report?”“Your tone indicates displeasure.”“More like surprise. I’m surprised that an apparent level seven impact - a possible hull breach - hasn’t generated more than a margin note in the logs. Aren’t you surprised, CyDar?”“It is… unanticipated.” There was a pause, uncomfortable by human standards, geological in computer terms. “I can gather no further data. All feeds from the affected area are dead.”“Are the feeds cut or blocked?”“Unable to confirm.”“Rob, we need to recce this, now.” Jamilah opened a locker and took out two pressure suits. They were designed for traversing vacuum-affected areas in a gravity-positive vessel, not for deep space work, so weren’t much harder to don and work in than a jump suit. Since the Lighthouse was largely automated or inert, most of it was unpressurised. Breathable air was too valuable a resource to fill a whole station, and it was corrosive. Their reservoirs held an hour of air and could be refilled from points throughout the station. She passed one to Rob, brushing her hand against his. “I’m glad it’s you. I’ve missed you.”He nodded. “Me too, you look great when you’ve just woken up.” They finished suiting up and she gave the cut-throat signal to leave their comms turned off. They pressed their faceplates together so that the suits could conduct sound.“CyDar is being evasive. What do you make of it?”“Not sure. The logs are generated in real time. I suppose they could have been tampered with. She doesn’t seem to be fully aware of the cause. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.” They kissed through the carbonate faceplates and turned their comms on.“Testing comms and video feed. Are you receiving us, CyDar?”“Affirmative, Captain Hurford. Full signal strength verified.”“Wish us luck.”“Hopefully so unreliable a system of chance will not be required, Captain McCullen.”“Amen to that, CyDar.”to be continued......(c) iamacamera 2022Image: Lexica.art
This assignment fitted with the track I was working on at the time, a single-take improv on a recent Naviar Haiku Challenge track. I simply added some reverb to mask a couple of misjudged moments and a “space” version courtesy of Abstract Chamber. I enhanced the fade-in and fade-out which were a bit faint.The title is from Ray Bradbury’s “The Fog Horn”“I'll make me a sound and an apparatus and they'll call it a Fog Horn and whoever hears it will know the sadness of eternity and the briefness of life."----------------------------------------------There is just one step this week. Cleaning out some old private tracks and found a few items of varying interest. This was made as part of a group project back in 2014, from a track by https://soundcloud.com/timheld. Also involved were https://soundcloud.com/lizanicklin and https://soundcloud.com/djrelish, who wove the whole thing together.
Made for Naviar Records' 599th Haiku ChallengeTa-no-Kami (田の神) is an agricultural deity, or kami, who is believed to observe the harvest of rice plants or to bring a good harvest, by Japanese farmers. Ta in Japanese means "rice fields". Ta-no-Kami is also called Noushin (kami of agriculture) or kami of peasants. Ta-no-Kami shares the kami of corn, the kami of water and the kami of defense, especially the kami of agriculture associated with mountain faith and veneration of the dead (faith in the sorei). Ta-no-Kami in Kagoshima Prefecture and parts of Miyazaki Prefecture is unique; farmers pray before Ta-no-Kami stone statues in their communities.
DoomsdayThe idiot bird leaps out and drunken leansAtop the broken universal clock:The hour is crowed in lunatic thirteens.Out painted stages fall apart by scenesWhile all the actors halt in mortal shock:The idiot bird leaps out and drunken leans.Streets crack through in havoc-split ravinesAs the doomstruck city crumbles block by block:The hour is crowed in lunatic thirteens.Fractured glass flies down in smithereens;Our lucky relics have been put in hock:The idiot bird leaps out and drunken leans.The monkey's wrench has blasted all machines;We never thought to hear the holy cock:The hour is crowed in lunatic thirteens.Too late to ask if end was worth the means,Too late to calculate the toppling stock:The idiot bird leaps out and drunken leans,The hour is crowed in lunatic thirteens.- Sylvia Plath 1954
This is composed solely of musical recordings of variable quality that I made during a tour of southern Spain in 2023; a National Day event in the square in Madrid, a religious parade through the streets of in Granada, a Flamenco show in Seville and the organ (and ambience) of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. I made a rough assembly last year, disliked it and left it. I’ve warmed to it, a bit – it’s now framed by the flamenco school recorded in Seville. All have been slightly treated/enhanced to varying degrees during the mixing process.You must see live flamenco before you die.----------------------------------------------The Assignment: Finish something (musical) you started last year.This project has just one step: finish something you started last year, likely a piece of music you left unfinished.More on the 680th weekly Disquiet Junto project, Reverse Resolution — The Assignment: Finish something (musical) you started last year — at https://disquiet.com/0680/More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
I used the same recording I made in 2013. Multiple edited copies were stretched, pitch-changed, put through different types of reverb, reversed, cut-up and re-edited, all using Audacity effects and plugins. The Vocoder and Phaser got a look in too. ----------------------------------------------The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.Welcome to a new year of Disquiet Junto communal music projects. This week’s project is as follows. It’s the same project we’ve begun each year with since the very first Junto project, way back in January 2012. The project is, per tradition, just this one step:Step 1: Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it.Background: Longtime participants in, and observers of, the Disquiet Junto series will recognize this single-sentence assignment — “Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it” — as the very first Disquiet Junto project, the same one that launched the series back on the first Thursday of January 2012. Revisiting it at the start of each January ever since has provided a fitting way to begin the new year. By now, it qualifies as a tradition. A weekly project series can come to overemphasize novelty, and it’s helpful to revisit old projects as much as it is to engage with new ones. Also, by its very nature, the Disquiet Junto suggests itself as a fast pace: a four-day production window, a regular if not weekly habit. It can be beneficial to step back and see things from a longer perspective.More on the 679th weekly Disquiet Junto project, Ice Age — The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it — at https://disquiet.com/0679/More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
Over an existing drone I had made from the “quiet” ambience of my house I added three slightly different versions of a stretched treatment of an electronic version of the opening bars of the theme from Star Trek: Voyager.Also added was a long stretch made from the tonic chord of the theme, pitched an octave down, for a bit of gravitas.----------------------------------------------The Assignment: Bury a slow melody deep inside a drone.Step 1: We did a drone project last week and it went well, so let’s do another one. You needn’t have done last week’s to do this week, as is always the case. Again, you may, yourself, be experienced recording drone music, or you may never have recorded any. You may not even be sure what drone music is, in which case read up a bit. Not matter your experience and familiarity, please give some thought as to what constitutes drone music.Step 2: Think about what makes a melody, even a very slow and simple melody, different from a drone.Step 3: Now record a piece of music that is, objectively, a deep drone, but somehow within it, somewhere well below the surface, include a slow-moving melody.More at https://disquiet.com/0676/More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
By chance (always a favourite way for things to happen), I was working on just such a drone, ie developing complexity and then relinquishing it, when this dropped.Based on a very old abandoned project using a recording of Also Sprach Zarathustra. Not sure what was done to it originally (alright, I can’t remember), this mix added some duplicated passages pitched down, stretched slightly and repositioned in order to create tonal contrasts.----------------------------------------------The Assignment: Record a drone that goes from simple to complex to simple.Step 1: You may, yourself, be experienced recording drone music, or you may never have recorded any. You may not even be sure what drone music is, in which case read up a bit. Not matter your experience and familiarity, please give some thought as to what constitutes drone music.Step 2: Now think about what makes a drone simple and what makes a drone complex.Step 3: Now record a piece of drone music that begins simple, gets complex, and then gets simple again. And note: The simple drone at the end needn’t necessarily be the same sort of drone with which the piece opens.More at https://disquiet.com/0675/More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
The first is made from my own recording of a thunderclap during a Sydney rainstorm, the second from a recording of the ambience of my house when we are out and the animals are asleep..Minimal and mercifully short. Based on recording of an anxious rehomed cocker spaniel awaiting our return and howling the place down... her name is Tully. We’ve had her for five days. She is still very anxious about the huge change in her life. This recording was made because I was curious to see if she howled when we went out for an hour or so without her. A big “yes”.I was going to do something a little more adventurous/interesting, but ended up just folding, compacting, cutting and reverbing a chunk of it. Also overlaid is a big furry sound. That’s the ambience of the house when she was silent. The odd ringing effect is because one track was pitched up and that5’s how it turned out – an Audacity accident.----------------------------------------------More on the 661st weekly Disquiet Junto project, Consumer Drone Product — The Assignment: Record a piece of drone music using sounds from your home — at https://disquiet.com/0661/More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
I chose a few short tracks originally used as effects-fodder (not exactly discarded but pinched from other sources then distorted beyond recognition) and subjected them to various plugins found in Audacity – reversing, stretching, tempo-fiddling, distortion, reverb, delay, pitch alteration and tone enhancement. This was done without first auditing the selections, just to make the results a bit more problematic. No step was reversed, no sound discarded.I then tried to make sense of what I’d done – tell a story, perhaps…Turned out marginally better than I expected.----------------------------------------------The Assignment: Use recently discarded material to make something new.Step 1: At the end of the calendar year, people often participate in holidays that result in lots of leftover food. Think about the leftovers — discarded tracks, or MIDI files, or ideas — that result from your music-making process.Step 2: Scrounge around on your hard drive and recording equipment, and in your memory, to access the sort of creative leftovers that came to mind in Step 1.Step 3: Make a new track primarily using the resources that surfaced in Step 2. You can, of course, add new material. And be sure to reheat sufficiently.More on this 621st weekly Disquiet Junto project, The Leftovers (The Assignment: Use recently discarded material to make something new), at: https://disquiet.com/0621/More on the Disquiet Junto at: https://disquiet.com/junto /
“In times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings--artists, scientists, clowns and philosophers--to create order. In times such as ours, however, when there is too much order, too much management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. End of experiment (with an enhanced mix of both tracks added and down-pitched an octave, of course).
I returned to the Samplebrain tracks from a couple of weeks ago – I had subjected one of the results to my trusty demo copy of The Mangle. One of the original samples was of birdsong, and they reappear in an interestingly altered way, realistic and yet surrealistic/enhanced/dreamlike as well. Which may or may not be what this Disquiet is about. Or both.
The Assignment: What does this imaginary genre sound like?
Step 1: Think about what a genre means, where it begins, where it ends, what makes a genre a genre.
Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the concept of magical realism, most often associated with the fiction of such authors as Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende, Jorge Luis Borges, Alice Hoffman, and Haruki Murakami, among others.
Step 3: Imagine what “digital magical realism” would sound like, were it the name of a genre.
Step 4: Record a piece of music that sounds like what you think “digital magical realism” sounds like.
I was probably being too impatient initially. Since I’m still running Windows 7, I just thought it wouldn’t run and forgot about it. Until today. I shortened the three samples, followed the instructions and produced this mess. Well, sort of. This has a reversed version overlaid and a reverb of both tracks mixed. Shortened the whole thing to avoid boring you. Sorry it’s so shit, haven’t got time to do anything else with it, but what a nice little toy!
Thanks Marc!
I was going to sit this one out. Then I wondered what the image would sound like imported as raw data into Audacity. Great blasts of white noise static, no surprise there. About to delete it, I put it through multiple layers of full reverb on a whim and was pleasantly surprised to hear it transform into a huge, bell-like drone which seemed to crawl around inside itself.
I tried importing the image using different parameters and got a much longer blast of noise, which was similarly treated and became the canvas on which four differently treated versions of the first, shorter one have been arranged in the manner of the image (using the ‘completeness’ of each circle to decide how much to treat each track). These were treated with BlueCat, Convoluter, Phaser and Harmonic Adder, along with being double-tracked out of phase in differing pitches and degrees of reverb.
Sorry it’s so long, I needed a big canvas.
The Assignment: Interpret a graphic score that depicts four phases.
A combined play on a Brian Eno phrase and a John Cage visual motif is pretty much foundational Disquiet Junto territory. This week, interpret this image as a graphic score: https://www.dropbox.com/s/frxh96qwx5a2qgm/junto-0557-weidenbaum.png?dl=0
Being way out of touch and not having any idea what gabber was, I took a crash course. Turns out to be good ol’ hardcore techno! Can’t say it ever did much for me, but that’s probably just an age thing. Our own https://soundcloud.com/lityk has even been generous enough to use some of my sounds in his work, like this one: https://soundcloud.com/lityk/dronebrute and an earlier one which even came out on vinyl! https://www.discogs.com/release/8227918-Lityk-Feat-Tuonela-3-Kotti-Telepath-Subsonic-002
Anyway, many of the tracks I came across had some fascinating dynamics. I picked this one as a sound source:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ss8aTYJVMyw&list=PLwt1yl0k-dTevOoOXJaEOKna3WjTumUHz&index=16
ie Kesj & Donut - Total confusionz
and fed it into my trusty outdated ambient v.3 software.
And this, with some multi-tracking and tonal tweaking, was the result. For me, it’s ambient but still has elements of the brutal power of the original. And just 1 real beat in 5 minutes!
The Assignment: Field-test a hybrid genre.
Thanks to Sevenism for having proposed this project.
Gabber and ambient music seem like polar opposites. Gabber is typified by a constant distorted kick drum pummelling you at upwards of 200bpm. Ambient, on the other hand, can be deeply immersive or barely noticeable. This project asks the question: is “gabber ambient” possible?
Step 1: Consider what makes gabber gabber and what makes ambient ambient. Where is there crossover?
Step 2: Make a track that could be construed as “gabba ambient.”
Step 3: You’re probably going to want to delete it. Try not to. Save and upload.
The chord was converted directly to a wav file, stretched and edited into a three-minute loopable drone.
The chord was treated (gently) in ambient v.3 and the result was sprinkled over the drone in various stages of reverb and enhancement.
The title is 2 anagrams of ‘Cage drone’. Not sure why…
The Assignment: Riff on a chord by John Cage.
Step 1: Consider this chord:
E5 A#4 E4 D#4 Db3 C3
Step 2: You might read up a bit about the source of the chord, the piece “Organ²/ASLSP” by John Cage. Cage desired the piece to be played “As Slow As Possible.” Currently it is being performed in Halberstadt, Germany, on a special organ that will play it for a total of 639 years. It’s been going for 21 years so far, and is at this moment playing the above chord. Read up here:
https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2022-02-04/john-cage-organ-slow-as-possible-halberstadt-germany
Step 3: Produce a loopable drone (duration between one and three minutes) of your own based on that chord.
Night sea journey. An archetypal motif in mythology, psychologically associated with depression and the loss of energy characteristic of neurosis.
"The night sea journey is a kind of descensus ad inferos--a descent into Hades and a journey to the land of ghosts somewhere beyond this world, beyond consciousness, hence an immersion in the unconscious." [“The Psychology of the Transference,”CW16, par. 455.]
Mythologically, the night sea journey motif usually involves being swallowed by a dragon or sea monster. It is also represented by imprisonment or crucifixion, dismemberment or abduction, experiences traditionally weathered by sun-gods and heroes: Gilgamesh, Osiris, Christ, Dante, Odysseus, Aeneas. In the language of the mystics it is the dark night of the soul.
Jung interpreted such legends symbolically, as illustrations of the regressive movement of energy in an outbreak of neurosis and its potential progression.
Not sure if this fits the bill, but… A five beat rhythm track was created in Audacity, then multi-tracked and mixed with different pitches and effects and assigned to extreme left or right channels – with one mix being in “true” stereo and one dead centre in mono. A couple of mixes were placed to provide a counter-rhythm. I hope.
A drone track was added in 2 octaves (one left, one right) as well as a Bluecat mix which gives that jittery effect.
Nice and short for a change.
The Assignment: Get intentional with stereo.
Step 1: Think about stereo for a moment.
Step 2: Now think about it a bit more — specifically, think less about using stereo as a means to give a sense of a physical space to a recording, and more about using stereo as a compositional tool.
Step 3: Record a piece of music in which you engage with stereo based on the ideas you formulated in Step 1 and Step 2.
These are a few of my favourite things… Using old online e synths to create sounds (rather than music), in this case the Ancient Solfeggio Synthesizer I found in 2012. Then, putting the result into ambient v.3 software and improvising on it. Lots of reverb, always lots of reverb. Then, manipulating the original synth sounds in Audacity, using its simplified version of Paulstretch, copying and cutting bits and modifying them to create drones (especially ones to cover abrupt endings and accidents). Then, overlaying the Ambient version, multitracking it and balancing the whole thing until it sounds like this…
The Assignment: Share a tip from your method toolbox.
Step 1: Think of some technique — small or larger, simple or complex — that you employ when making music.
Step 2: Make a piece of music employing that technique.
Step 3: When sharing the piece of music, describe the technique so that others might employ it.
By a strange bit of synchronicity (always sounds better than ‘coincidence’), I was already working on something inspired by this same concept.
Very simple, just a short burst of sound culled from a work in progress, subjected to many passes through Audacity’s “Sliding Stretch” and further enhanced by modified sections of drone sourced from the stretched results. Some unexpected rhythmic pulses appear as well, adding to the fun.
The Assignment: Get someone from tense to chill.
Step 1: Your goal with this piece is to guide someone from a place of intense stress to something more sedate. Keep that in mind.
Step 2: A lot of meditation-oriented music takes the end point as the start. Consider that it can be jarring to listen to calm music when you are anything but calm.
Step 3: Compose a piece of music that starts in a state of accelerated tension, allows the listener to align their own tension with that of the music, and then slowly proceeds to calm down, until the music is sustainably peaceful.
A couple of tracks which had been prepared for an earlier disquiet project, and then abandoned, were resurrected and remixed. Then, a glitch collage of speech and sounds was laid over it and spookified in the Spookatorium. Then the lights went out and some eldritch horror began to seep into the room and was about to absorb my being into its foul, polyp-crawling, many fanged maw when it realised it had the wrong address and vanished, leaving seething puddles of noxious, other-worldly, Lovecraftian slime all over the place. At least, that’s what I told the cleaner.
I laid DD’s samples end to end and made them into a wav file in Audacity. This was then explored using my demo copy of The Mangle (using a bit more restraint than I usually display). The result was cut up and rearranged over several drones created from the cello sample, with some reverb added and some other fiddling with track lengths and channels. A few glitches were cleaned up and some extra bits from the mangle remixed and sprinkled over the beginning and end sections.
I doubt that the end result is still in C, and probably has strayed into many other keys, hence the title.
The Assignment: Make music with 10 acoustic instrument samples all in a shared key.
Step 1: This week’s project is based on a great “construction kit” of WAV files in the key of C recorded for us by Disquiet Junto member Daniel Díaz.
Step 2: Listen through the tracks, which include piano, two electric guitars, melodica, bowed upright bass, and other instruments.
Step 3: Record your own track employing the source audio.
For the dream I took a soundscape I’d been working on for another track and “alienated” it even more than it was.
Treated bird noises from an English coastal village were stretched and distorted further to add exotica.
Then real train recordings from a British railcam were brought into to represent the “real” world.
The dream has the last tweet…
The Assignment: Record the sound of a Martian daydream, interrupted.
Step 1: Early on in the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,” a man name Quail has a daydream interrupted. He dreams of visiting Mars, but then reality intrudes: “the daylight, the mundane noise of his wife now brushing her hair before the bedroom mirror — everything conspired to remind him of what he was.” As the reader will learn, Quail has in fact already visited Mars, subsequent to which his mind was wiped free of the visit. His daydream at the start of the story is as much a remnant memory as it is a wish to be fulfilled. Keep this scenario in mind, and maybe read the short story.
Step 2: Record the sound of some realistic-feeling alien landscape, perhaps Martian, and then at the very end of the recording have real-world sounds appear to break the spell.
Hell Feeder proudly announce The Mabon Remix Project. An international remix collaboration with admired artists on Soundcloud.
hellfeeder.com/mabon
The celebration of the Autumnal Equinox, Harvest Home, Mabon, the Feast of the Ingathering, is a modern Pagan ritual of thanksgiving for the fruits of the earth and a recognition of the need to share them to secure the blessings of the Goddess and the God during the coming winter months. The name Mabon was coined by Aidan Kelly around 1970 as a reference to Mabon ap Modron, a character from Welsh mythology. Among the Sabbats, it is the second of the three Pagan harvest festivals, preceded by Lammas / Lughnasadh and followed by Samhain. (Source Wikipedia)
here, humans built a world, lived in concord, dreaming daring dreams. believing in the words of men with wisdom’s glimmer they sought to sublimate the power of good and beat their ploughshares into swords.
set on this course, they channeled down dark minds, installed them in Palladian halls and granted them the powers of gods. in mass destruction’s questing, these tricksters broke apart their sacred pledges until all men were simply dead and gone.
I didn’t know her work at all. I spent some time looking through a number of images and this one grabbed me. I like that while it is apparently linear and structured, like most of her work at that time, it has small irregularities and blips, unlike much of her work and much like most of my soundscapes.
I created a short “arched” sine tone which dropped a few tones and made a 15 second sonic piece, then replicated it, building a slightly irregular “structure” with uneven changes of pitch and tempo. This structure was duplicated and the mix treated with reverb. These were layered over a foundation tone made from the original tone structure and stretched and treated in the Abstract Chamber.
It’s a little ragged around the edges, but then, so is the image.
The Assignment: Interpret a painting by Agnes Martin as if it were a graphic score.
Step 1: Look at the work of painter Agnes Martin, best known for her parallel lines.
Step 2: Select an individual work that suggests itself to you as a musical score.
Step 3: Record a short piece of music that interprets the painting selected in Step 2 as if it were a musical score.
Fragmentary reasoning by Tuonela
The ghostly Rhizostoma luteum is a jellyfish so elusive that decades often pass without a single sighting. The creature was first discovered by naturalists in 1827, but it wasn't until 2013 – nearly 200 years later – that the species was confirmed to be real. Read more about it here: https://www.earthtouchnews.com/oceans/oceans/it-took-200-years-to-prove-this-jellyfish-is-real-and-now-its-breeding-in-captivity/
I dug out an ancient track that had been a mutation of a piano track in a Soundcloud competition, back in the days of groups when we did stuff like that.
And further mutated it with reverse, reverb, The Mangle and remix.
And this is it. If you thought it was quiet down there in the depths, you can’t hear like a jellyfish…
The Assignment: What does a moment (or a day) in the life of a jellyfish sound like to a jellyfish?
There is just one step:
Step 1: Compose a piece of sound/music that summons up what a moment, or an instance, or a day in the life of a jellyfish is like to the jellyfish.
Not really an inspired effort, a bit rushed but still fun. I looped one of the ambient tracks and put it through a lot of reverb, Abstract Chamber and made a background. Then used the Tool tracks to make a single wav file and subjected that to various indignities using ambient v.3. This was cut up and remixed over the backing and… a sound sculpture, I guess.
The Assignment: Create a piece of music from sounds related to working with rocks.
Welcome to the 450th consecutive weekly Disquiet Junto project. Thanks to everyone who has participated, supported, and pitched in along the way.
This project is the third of three that are being done over the course of as many months in collaboration with the 2020 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 2 through 6 under the motto “Tektonik” (“Tectonics”). For this reason, a German translation is provided below. We are working at the invitation of Tobias Reber, an early Junto participant, who is in charge of the educational activities of the festival. This is the second year in a row that the Junto has collaborated with Musikfestival Bern. Select recordings resulting from these three Disquiet Junto projects will be played on a listening booth at the Steinatelier on September 5, as well as being aired on Radio RaBe (rabe.ch), an independent local radio station partnering with the festival.
Step 1: Download the field recordings made at Carlo Bernasconi AG, a company that has been working in stone for over a century. The sounds range from machines to manual tools to spatial ambience.
Step 2: Listen for aspects of the recordings that attract your ears. Focus on textures in particular.
Step 3: Create a piece of music combining elements from as few or as many as you chose in Step 2.
Not having Disquieted for some time, and not being completely on board with the intention of the project after admittedly skimming various pages, I got all enthusiastic when I saw Bernie Krause’s name and realised the sonic lineage of the assembled creators.
I delved into my old “field recordings” folder (okay, me playing with a Tascam) and chose three or five, then cut them up, treated them and reprocessed them (according to whim and instinct) in Audacity using basic effects and plugins.
I still have no idea if this really fits the brief or not but it was fun.
The Assignment: Celebrate World Listening Day for the whole weekend.
Step 1: This weekend it’s World Listening Day, which occurs every year on July 18, which is the birthday of R. Murray Schafer, the composer and acoustic ecologist. This year, the theme for World Listening Day is “The Collective Field,” as proposed by Katherine Krause.
Step 2: Read about this theme, “The Collective Field,” at:
https://worldlisteningday.org/
Step 3: Make a piece of music for World Listening Day, inspired by the theme, or just in the spirit of the occasion.
I slightly modified the assignment (read: I misunderstood it at first and did something different) to portray how even a more-or–less okay piece of music can be degraded and subverted by being used as aural mogadon by a call centre, especially if you’ve been listening for 40 minutes and your ears are bleeding.
This uses a YouTube clip by Channel Swimmer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s6bv4yayOk which has 1hr10min of on-hold music, some of it quite fun listening. Most of this is based on progressively more degraded versions of the first piece, lasting a couple of minutes. I kept the whole thing and put the rest through a sliding stretch (several times) in order to bring down the time and turn it into an appropriately and increasingly featureless blur of sound.
The last degradation, using an Audacity distortion plugin I just discovered, is actually the sort of thing I would rather listen to if I had to be on hold for any length of time. That, or the sound of the relevant company’s CEO being flogged with red hot chains and rolled in salt.
The Assignment: Record music intended to sound just as garbled as the hold music on a phone call.
Step 1: Think of a time when you were put on hold by customer service or waiting for a conference call to begin. Think about such a situation when the hold music sounded like it had been run through a washing machine, or put through a bit crusher, or photocopied 100 times in sequence before it got to your ear.
Step 2: Record a short piece of music intended to sound just as garbled as the hold music on a modern phone call. Think of this as “hold noise.”
Sentimental and subjective all the way. The backing is a stretched version of the Lawrence of Arabia theme, one of the most majestic themes in movies, introed by a piece from Field of Dreams and the sound of an old movie theatre projector. Over this I’ve sprinkled bits of dialogue from some of my favourite movies. On another day I’d probably choose others but some I picked to align with the theme of age, decay and lost time. Some of the cuts are a bit clumsy but, well… I ran out of time.
"When TV signals are sent out, they don't stop. They keep going. They pick up speed as they leave the solar system. By now, the first TV programs ever made have been traveling for thirty years. They are well beyond our solar system now. All those characters from cowboy serials, variety hours and quiz shows are sailing out. They are the first true voyagers into deep space. And they sail farther and farther out, intact, still talking
And as we listen with our instruments, as we learn to listen farther and farther into space, we can hear them. We listen farther and that is all we hear. They are jamming our lines. We listen and we hear them talking, traveling, going faster and faster ... getting fainter and fainter. And as our instruments become more sophisticated, we can hear them better .... speeding away ... the sound of speeding away ... like a phone continuously ringing." I made a single track out of all the samples, an easy task thanks to Audacity. Probably should have balanced them then, but I was too lazy. This track was multi-tracked; all were repeatedly “ambiented” using plugins, 2 being pitched down a tone as well. Another was put through a subtle reverb. A bit tricky as I hadn’t balanced the samples and had to go in and manually reduce peaks on all tracks using Audacity’s Envelope Tool.
The track was also improvised on in Audiobulb’s ambient, then doubled and overlaid on the 2nd half of the mix with one reverbed. This produced some strange moments which don’t sound vocal at all. Which is why I like it!
Track image is pinched from the Wikipedia image of the cover of James Lane Allen’s 1897 book and modified.
The Assignment: Make music from 100+ vocal samples of held syllables by members of the Disquiet Junto.
Step 1: Welcome to a large, asynchronous, distributed choir. The Dischoir consists of 113 samples of held syllables by over 50 participants in the Disquiet Junto. You can access the files at the following URL. Note that a few of them deviate from the initial instructions: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/pkuvmzwcdz6dx27/AACUsNclLLqToLp-OJWVkaQXa?dl=0
Step 2: Create a piece of choral music from the provided samples. You are encouraged to make music that feels “human,” that feels like it is simply a lot of people singing at once. However, of course, the end result is up to you; you can and should mix, mash, and create as you please.
I used three samples involving ice in a glass: the original Disquiet ice recording I made in 2013, a treated version of it and one I created last year.
Last year’s was enhanced into a quasi-organ drone using several passes through good old Paulstretch on different settings. The other samples were then layered onto this mix in Audacity, altered in pitch and tempo and treated with reverb, flanger, echo and Crazy Ivan.
The Assignment: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something of it.
Welcome to a new year (the ninth!) of Disquiet Junto communal music projects. This week’s project is as follows. It’s the same project we’ve begun each year with since the very first Junto project, way back in January 2012. The project is, per tradition, just this one step:
Step 1: Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it.
Not quite melodies. Minor key suggestions of the otherworldly. Suspense. Something behind you. Something in front of you. In the dark. Dissonant overtones. Disturbing rumbles. You know the sort of thing…
So I pinched some sounds from various sources, took a few seconds of each, did some stretching and pitch altering, played with it in ambient v.3 and added some reverbing and reversing. And I reckon it’s a bit spooky…
I did another track for this Junto, before this one, but it ended up like a bumpy ride through Hell. It’s called “Sabbat”. Watch this space. Or, one like it.
The Assignment: Raise haunting music to the next level.
Step 1: Consider what makes music spooky.
Step 2: Make some music that considerably outdoes what you thought of in Step 1.
Malka Older – The Divided – Part 5/9 disquiet0400
I used the voice track of Part 5 to create 4 ambient backgrounds. One normal, processed to a soft blur. This was also overlaid in slightly reverbed form. Another was reversed and likewise processed, then bass boosted and dropped an octave. Another was put through a convoluter and overlaid, though at a subliminal level.
The second half was duplicated and processed through a corkscrew plugin, then also overlaid at very low volume.
Finally a one minute section of an old Luminth recording was chosen and used as a ‘musical’ backing.
The Assignment: Create a score to a Malka Older story using the author’s own voice as source audio.
Step 1: The author Malka Older (Infomocracy, Ninth Step Station, Orphan Black: The Next Chapter) has generously recorded herself reading her own short story, “The Divided,” and made that recording available to the Disquiet Junto community for this project. Acquire the nine (roughly) one-minute segments of the recording in this zip file:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/mgwx9fa9bwz76ll/0400-stems.zip
Step 2: Select one of the nine tracks at random.
Step 3: Listen to the entire story, which is about nine and a half minutes long. Consider the narrative sensibility of your assigned subset of that story.
Step 4: Create a score and sound design to accompany Older’s reading of her own short story in the track that you selected in Step 2. Primarily use Older’s own voice as the source material for your score — bend it, shape it, extract from it, and burnish it to your creative ends. Additional sonic elements, both musical and foley, are welcome, but a substantial percentage of the sound should be from Older’s own voice. Also: keep Older’s own reading audible and inteligible; don’t slow or speed or otherwise edit it. Your score should accompany the reading, not supplant it.
The Dream Garden
Augustus awoke with a glassy tinkling in his ears. It was so cold that there was a sparkle of fine frost over the dormitory. On his bed lay a long, elegant crystal, shimmering from within. It was his last dream, frozen solid.
Wrapping his ragged blanket around him, Augustus cradled the frigid fantasy and sneaked out. He felt sick with fear as he descended the steep, narrow staircase. His bare feet were numb and he clenched his jaw to stop his teeth chattering
He knelt by the grey stone wall at the end of the garden, rocking the glistening gem in his arms until the first beam of the rising sun fell upon it. The crystal gradually lost its luster, fading and shriveling until Augustus was left holding the body of a large lizard with glowing skin. Its diamond eyes faded in the dawn light.
Fighting back tears, he scraped a hole in the vegetable patch with his bare hands, burying the body with the others. As he crept back to bed, he prayed he would dream no more dreams, at least until it was warmer and they could find their own way to the garden.
The track I chose was a melange of sounds produced by an online synth called “Surprise”, accessed without design and operated without talent or forethought, which was then reprocessed (equally randomly) using Granulab in ways it wasn’t designed to be used… so it was pretty glitch to start with. This was double-tracked and time-tinkered to do funny things to the stereo image.
This was then “improvised” on using The Mangle (also in unintended ways). The result was also double-tracked and time-tinkered, then laid over the original tracks and cut into three and spread out so that the original track could peek through in places – though it’s pretty difficult to tell where since they tend to sound somewhat similar.
Then I did the same thing to the image.
The Assignment: what happens when you glitch something that’s been glitched?
Step 1: Take a recording. Glitch it.
Step 2: Glitch it a second time, in some different manner, and try to have moments where the initial glitch remains evident and untarnished (well, un-further-tarnished).
Fortress of Solitude [disquiet0366]
Took some clinks of varying pitches out of the recording I made in 2013 and arranged into a “melody” of a few seconds. This was duplicated many times, at different pitches, and became a 1 minute ambient track. This in turn was multiplied, with some tracks being reversed, pitched down and given slight reverb. The resulting track was then treated in both The Mangle and ambient software and the two tracks then mixed and further treated with Audacity plugins.
Shaper Shaped
In days gone by I used to be A potter who would feel His fingers mould the yielding clay To patterns on his wheel; But now, through wisdom lately won, That pride has gone away, I have ceased to be the potter And have learned to be the clay.
In other days I used to be A poet through whose pen Innumerable songs would come To win the hearts of men; But now, through new-got knowledge Which I hadn't had so long, I have ceased to be the poet And have learned to be the song.
I was a fashioner of swords, In days that now are gone, Which on a hundred battle-fields Glittered and gleamed and shone; But now I am brimming with The silence of the Lord, I have ceased to be sword-maker And have learned to be the sword.
In by-gone days I used to be A dreamer who would hurl On every side an insolence Of emerald and pearl But now I am kneeling At the feet of the Supreme I have ceased to be the dreamer And have learned to be the dream.
Transmuted gymnopédie [disquiet0363]
First half is a recording of the Gymnopédie No 1 played through my creaky demo copy of The Mangle, rather more carefully than usual, with a definite intention to keep the results recognisable and within the musical back yard of the original. This graduates into the same piece transformed by Audiobulb’s ambient software – rather less recognisable but still retaining some of the ambience of the original. Both halves involved multi-tracking with selective addition of reverb, delay and equalisation.
A short section of the ceremony, during which the body is cleansed and prepared. The full piece lasts eighteen hours.
The death march was made from a one second cut from the bass diddley bow, copied, pasted, pitch altered, stretched etc into what you hear. The rest was made from two of the spring tracks, including a segment treated in The Mangle, which provides the melodic percussion sequence.
I tried to keep the sound as ‘unprocessed’ as possible, in keeping with the concept.
Disquiet Junto Project 0354: Rituals & Canticles
The Assignment: Make music using instruments from a future that doesn’t fully remember our present.
Background: Nathan Moody didn’t create a concept album when he recorded his recent album, The Right Side of Mystery, but he had a framework for deciding how to make his instruments, and even how he composed. He imagined a future American tribe living in the ruins of our current civilization, scrounging for materials to make instruments for their rituals, from everyday events to significant milestones of years and lives. The music itself would be incorrectly remembered combinations of past musical traditions and styles, melded together.
Step 1: Consider that scenario of the future.
Step 2: Check out instruments that Moody made to act out his imagined future:
Step 3: Download the sonic source material that Moody recorded with those instruments, and that he has made available to participants in this Disquiet Junto project:
http://bit.ly/junto-moody-revised
Step 4: Roll one six-sided die, which will determine which of these tribe events/rituals you’ll compose music for:
1 = Marriage 2 = Death 3 = Lullaby 4 = Solstice or Harvest 5 = Coming of Age 6 = Coronation
Step 5: Re-read the background description up above, and compose a piece of music for the event assigned to you in Step 4 using the sounds from Step 3. Bonus interim round: create your own instrument modeled after Moody’s.
I used 2 samples from 2 works in progress, both made from a vst syth improve recorded on 03082018, which gives this its title.
Sample 1 was reversed and appended to itself, creating the initial palindrome. This was stretched and expanded.
Sample 2 was similarly appended, then treated 3 different ways and multitracked to create the deep palindrone(!) which underlies the central section.
The unstretched Sample 1 palindrome was doubled and expanded to match the first iteration in length, then lowered in pitch and treated with reverb. This provides a double palindromic accompaniment to the first. I hope. It’s tired and I’m getting late…
(The picture hints that the palindrome may not be perfect…)
I used a recording I made some years ago of water dripping into a large porcelain bowl. The single drip motif imitating the piano is an obvious anchor, treated to sound a little more percussive. The entire recording is compressed, re-stretched and reverbed, made to descend six semitones with a progressively stretched ending and replicated seven times at different pitches.
Then the recording was treated using The Mangle, and the result was replicated and – in one case reversed – and, er, dropped into several places in the mix, according more to whim than any sense of musicality, and certainly with NO intention of replicating the wonderfully disciplined and rhythmic structure of Terry Riley’s composition.
Disquiet Junto Project 0342: In Sea The Assignment: Record a piece of music in tribute to Terry Riley’s In C using only samples of water sounds.
Step 1: You’ll be recording a piece of music in tribute to Terry Riley’s In C. (If you’re unfamiliar, read up and listen.) Don’t use the actual composition. Consider aspects of it, and choose ways to emulate them, to extrapolate compositional ideas from them.
Step 2: Record a piece of music employing the decisions you made in Step 1. Only use samples of water sounds as your source audio. (Side note: collaborating with others is encouraged but not necessary.)
Rude Danube [disquiet0339]
Stretching the idea of “rude” to include what we are doing to our home planet, this is a version of the Blue Danube, taken from a crackly LP recording of an old Swiss music box (mechanical music) in the famous Bornand Collection, which has had various rude things done to it (using effects and vst plugins in Audacity) to paint a sonic image of what is now the most polluted waterway in Europe.
Naviar Quartet [disquiet0338]
I laid out the four tracks in sequence, balanced and mixed them and created a source track. This was then subjected to my usual indignities with The Mangle and Audiobulb’s ambient software, mixed and decorated with its own entrails.
Thanks to the Naviar family for providing such wonderful tracks to work with.
In collaboration with Naviar Haiku, make a four-person band from the provided four live solo recordings.
Step 1: First, major thanks to Neil Stringfellow (aka Audio Obscura) for proposing this collaboration between the Disquiet Junto and the Naviar Haiku series, and for the support of Naviar’s Marco Sebastiano Alessi. We’ll be making music based on segments of recordings by four musicians from the May 25, 2018, Naviar Haiku Fest. Get the four recordings here from the Zip file:
http://bit.ly/juntonaviar
Step 2: Having downloaded the four tracks (by Ikjoyce, Audio Obscura, Subsepai, and sevenism), listen to them. Each is a single minute from longer solo performances. Imagine how they might work together.
Step 3: Create a new track employing material from all four (and no other external sound sources, though processing is OK) that suggests the existence of a quartet performing live.
First rule of Disquiet Club: Step outside the guidelines.
So I used ZynAddSubFX and NanoStudio to create a rough, layered 1 minute track with a synth-y layer and an acid guitar layer, rather than a strictly ‘single sound’ source.
This was then multiplied, stretched, tempo-shifted, reversed, treated with Crazy Ivan, reverb, cut up and multi-tracked until it sort of made sense. Sort of. I do love that last chord…
"My opinion is this: Everything is right and everything is wrong; everything is yes and everything is no; everything is continuous and everything is not – all at once." – Glenn Branca
Record a massive multi-layered tribute to the legendary guitarist-composer.
Major thanks to James Britt for contributing this Junto project prompt.
Step 1: This project is a tribute to the late avant-garde composer and guitarist Glenn Branca, who died earlier this month. Among Branca’s many musical systems was to have a vast number of musicians, say 100 guitarists for example, perform together. We’re going to explore that mass of sound to produce a mass in Branca’s memory. It will be a Mass Mass.
Step 2: Pick a single sound source, an instrument perhaps, but really anything that makes a specific sound. One thing to aim for is a sound source that is rich in overtones.
Step 3: Use multiple layers (with “multiple” being defined as you see fit — 100 layers would be awesome, but so too would 10, 30, 50, etc.) of this sound source to record a piece of music.
I generated 3 x 2 second sine waves of 111 hz, 333 hz and 666 hz. These were then drawn out and broken apart using Audacity, mixed together, reverbed and balanced in order to create a sort of sine-drone thunderscape. Then a Freesound recording (see below) of turntable and vinyl surface noise was edited, likewise broken apart and reverbed and mixed in. It was multi-tracked, then each was reverbed at different levels and also eq’d to enhance both bass and treble.
Disquiet Junto Project 0326: Wave Turntable In collaboration with composer Danny Clay, make music for his exhibit with artist Jon Fischer using only sine waves and turntable surface noise.
Step 1: Tracks in this project will be played as part of a free event in San Francisco at the McEvoy Foundation for the Arts (mcevoyarts.org) on Saturday, April 7, 2018, for an exhibit by composer Danny Clay (dclaymusic.com) and artist Jon Fischer (feather2pixels.com). The project was developed in collaboration with Clay. Before proceeding, consider the sort of music that might be conducive as partially-heard, partially-background music for an art event.
Step 2: Compose a short piece of music using only sine waves and the surface sounds of vinyl played on a turntable. Those two sources are inspirations for the Clay/Fischer exhibit. (The cover image to this project shows some of Fischer’s turntable art.)
