Navigating summer amidst family commitments, work-from-home dynamics, and the bustle of life, the theme that stands out for today's leadership reflection is COMPASSION. But what does compassionate leadership entail?

A compassionate leader values and prioritizes the well-being of others. They don't just acknowledge or recognize someone's feelings; they engage deeply with the experiences of others, showing genuine empathy through tangible actions. In a world filled with challenges, it's essential to FEEL and ACT. So, embrace compassionate leadership, making genuine, supportive connections. Cheers to your journey!

Summer is a perfect time to reset and try something new while basking in the sunshine. In my quest for happiness and well-being, I’ve turned to Dr. Laurie Santos, a Yale psychology professor who created a renowned happiness course alongside Martin Seligman's PERMA Framework to help define well-being. Finding purpose and meaning in life is vital for our happiness. Our work-life connection greatly impacts our overall well-being, too. So, let's make this summer a time of growth and positive change, embracing the PERMA framework and finding more meaning and purpose in our lives. Cheers to a happy and fulfilling summer ahead!

It is summer and summer is officially one of my favorite seasons because there's a lot of flexibility in schedules, people have fun plans, they're taking vacations and getting rejuvenated and refreshed, ready to come back to work – and you may have noticed, we paused for a little bit on the Coffee on Leadership podcast. I'm gonna be honest, I was super behind, because it has been a very full season for me. But it's also summer and that makes it difficult to really want to sit down and leverage learning content. It's also difficult as a learner and as a leader to find time in your schedule for development. So here's what I'm doing: a summer series is coming your way that will have those short and sweet episodes meant to be quickly listened to and integrated into your day. Listen in for more info about what’s to come!

Several weeks ago on the podcast, we discussed the impact player and how to identify these leaders in your organization so you can effectively care for them. Today, I am sharing with you an excellent example of how a person can make a big difference with one tiny decision for their team. It is actually about my husband, Chadwick, who demonstrated leadership by taking on a task usually assigned to a production assistant. It is all about the significance of small acts of service, paying attention to your team’s needs, and finding ways to lighten the load. I hope this story will challenge you to be an impact player who steps in and sees an opportunity to make things light within your own organization.

Last week on the podcast, we discussed the difference makers - the people who are always on top of the list when we need somebody who can get things done and lead us well. But they often tend to be perfectionists, which leads to putting all the weight on their shoulders for their team's success. So I want to dive deeper into this topic by analyzing Liz Wiseman's research that explores the idea of creating an environment that embraces mistakes and failures as opportunities for growth. Leaders need to understand the significance of embracing mistakes and failures as catalysts for personal and team development. Tune in for more insights!

We've been talking about meaningfulness and purpose as a way to retain and engage employees the past few episodes. And I've talked about it from the perspective of these are questions that you can be asking yourself or a colleague or a friend to be thinking about the ways that you show up in your work with purpose and connection to your deeper core values. But I now want to shift this conversation a bit, I want to turn back and focus for a minute on the leader – how might they be feeling during a busy season at work when they're feeling burnt out? What's happening behind the scenes for them when they're super driven by purpose, but they're also super tired? Today I want to share how to identify these leaders in your organization so you can effectively care for them.

Last week on the podcast, we discussed the significance of a leader who sits down with people to talk through passion, purpose, and meaningfulness in their work. Leaders who take the time to connect with their employees and understand their motivations can create a more meaningful work experience, leading to more productive and passionate employees who engage more deeply with their work and stay within the organization. In today's episode, I am bringing you a quick toolkit with ten essential questions you can ask your employee or co-worker. Pick one or a few that resonate the most and start peeling off the layers of their work to learn why they do what they do. Let’s get into it!

Let's talk about the importance of helping your teams understand how to be more connected to their purpose in their work. I recently looked at a study by McKinsey & Co. that was talking about how to attract and retain talent and the driving factors and motivators in leaving a company or staying in order to attract and retain talent at our organizations (because it goes way deeper than how much money someone makes). What I noticed right off the bat, employee experience is driven by meaningfulness of the work. So I want to dive into that today – how to cultivate purpose for your employees, plus other factors that should be on your radar.

Several weeks ago on the podcast we discussed six book recommendations for emotionally intelligent leaders. So, on today’s episode of Coffee on Leadership, I wanted to dive deeper into one of my favorites - The Infinite Game by the one and only Simon Sinek. Of course, you already know I am a big Simon Sinek fan, and I often reference his work. In this book, Sinek talks about the importance of embracing an infinite mindset when it comes to leadership and business strategy. This book provides so much perspective on what it means to be a leader in today's world. A good leader can positively impact their teams, who then, in turn, learn and continue that cycle to change the world around them. I hope this episode will inspire you to go to your nearest bookstore, grab your favorite cup of coffee, and enjoy this gem. Let me know if you do so, and shoot me a DM with some of your favorite takeaways from the book; I will be glad to discuss them with you.

We're doing some major strategizing behind the scenes of Coffee on Leadership, so I'm releasing another replay episode that feels relevant because I've been digging into my creative side lately!

But time and time again we need to be reminded of how we are creative as leaders. In this episode, I give 4 steps for growing in your creative confidence and challenge you to see yourself for the creative leader you are because we are all in a cycle of creative process and press-- which fuels innovation if we start looking for the deeper problem we need to solve in our work.

Original show notes:

Everywhere I turn, strategists and developers and coaches are reminding leaders and business owners to return to the "why" in the work. While it may seem like it is everywhere, Simon Sinek's Golden Circle principle that sparked the "why" movement empowers this generation of leaders to be inspired and motivated. While a good leader knows their why, a great leader can communicate their why – in this episode, find out why communication can be key to unlocking employee engagement.

By now you've heard about it, maybe even picked up a paddle, but you'd have to be living under a rock to not know that pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports right now. I started playing, just as a small hobby to start, last summer. I never imagined that I’d be as obsessed as I am now – with my $200 racket and regular games 3x a week. But of course, throughout my own rise as a pickleball player, I’ve seen the ways in which this sport, or trying something new in general, relates to leadership development. So let’s break it down in under 20 minutes today so that you, too, can pick up a new hobby and become a better leader while you’re at it. Cheers!

Sometimes work gets busy and things get pushed to the back burner, and that's okay - it's also why I'm bringing a special replay episode to you today that covers an endlessly buzzy topic: burnout. I couldn't record a fresh episode this week because I got busy with some client work and wanted to avoid burnout. If you originally listened to this episode when it aired in 2021, I invite you to listen again for a refresher.

Today, I am giving you the 3 ways burnout may be showing up and impacting your life/leadership and then reverse-engineering burnout to find what's causing burnout so that you can begin to think of ways to make tactical decisions and changes.

Take notes so that you can answer these questions:

  • What is workplace burnout?

  • What are the 3 primary ways burnout shows up in your life?

  • What are the 6 causes of burnout?

  • What questions can you be asking yourself to change those 6 causes?

After recording this episode, we realized there's so much more to this recipe, so stay tuned for another burnout episode in the future!

Last week on the podcast we talked about finding mentors in unlikely places, and I got to thinking that what happens when we do this is we're really gaining in that wisdom and insight and knowledge that they're sharing – even if the medium we are learning from them is unconventional. So I started thinking about how we look for learning and curate curiosity in our life and in our leadership and that's what we're going to talk about today. I want to talk about curating curiosity because so often, we're stuck in the grind of our everyday work and life that we forget that getting curious is really, really important for any process, and for any level of growth. Grab your cup of coffee and dig in with me, hopefully you’ll leave feeling curious to learn more!

You know that phrase, “It's all who you know,” is really true. I mean, think about it, you've probably known somebody in your life who has helped you get a job interview or set you up with the right person or given you a recommendation for a great restaurant – and it's all because of who you know. This saying also rings true when it comes to your own leadership development by way of mentorship. Mentors are the stars that guide you, and when you find a really good one, it can be a huge catalyst for your career (and your life) as you grow into the leader, worker, or business owner that you want to be. But how do you find a good mentor? Tune in to today’s episode to find out!

I wanted to kick off this New Year's episode that will be coming to you at the end of January with a reminder that it doesn't have to be “new year new you,” it doesn't have to be big lofty goals, it doesn't have to be worry that you've already dropped your resolutions. So let’s talk about that today, along with the simple ways you can make 2023 your best year for leadership development yet – and it doesn't have to be huge things, it can start with small steps to get there. Today's episode on employee engagement and last week's episode on transient hypofrontality if you caught that one, or both conversations with Scott Salsman who's been on the podcast before, but I wanted to give you a quick note that we recorded these episodes over a year ago. I pulled it out of the archives because it seemed relevant, given the recent podcast episode where I talked about Amy Edmondson and Kim Scott's article on psychological safety. Today's episode touches on psychological safety as well from Dr. Kahn's perspective, who is also a leader in the field.

Transient hypofrontality and employee engagement are two things that won't go away, the topic remains the same, and the content and research put into those topics is still really important. So enjoy today's episode, this conversation with Scott is crucial. Stay tuned because we will have some new resources that we'll be rolling out soon. So this is a little teaser for that to stay tuned for some new performance mindset leadership development resources that we have coming your way.

I get my best work done in the shower. Maybe for you it’s while you’re driving, on a long run, or doing the dishes. There’s actually a term for this – transient hypofrontality which essentially means that for a while, under certain conditions (like taking a shower), the focused thinking part of our brain gets a rest which allows other parts and functions to become more dominant. So how can you use this phenomenon to be a better leader? Join me and Scott Salsman of the Leadership Mindset Institute (powered by Coffee on Leadership) to find out how!

I know so many of you are wrapping up the year right now and you're in that space where you're holding the tension between reflection and looking back on the past year – you’re finishing up projects and figuring out what worked well, what didn't and what you hope to change. Then, at the other end of this, you're holding a rope that's attached to 2023 and planning for what's ahead, so that's a tricky spot to be in because you have to balance that tension because they are related and connected. I also know that reflection, and planning can bump up against each other a little bit and it feels like we don't have time for either. So in today's podcast episode we are going to reflect on your team development strategy because I want to have a conversation about how you're envisioning doing development with your team next year and in the future, and creating some space for that. So here we go!

There is nothing I love more than a brand new book. I love opening it up and smelling the pages, then sitting down under a cozy blanket with a warm cup of coffee to finally read it. So when friends or students or podcast listeners ask for my book recs, I know they aren't asking for a graduate level journey into academics, but I also want to make it worth their time. So on today’s episode of Coffee on Leadership, we're talking about six books I've picked out for you to read to become a more emotionally intelligent leader because I know emotional intelligence is such a hot topic right now. These are the six I would want you to dive in with, but of course you can start with one! So let's talk about them.

I came across an article this morning co-authored by two of my favorite women in the leadership space, Amy Edmondson and Kim Scott – and since this podcast is about actionable leadership development that you can integrate into your day, that's how I started my day and thought I want to share this with you right now.

So Amy's work on psychological safety is brilliant and Kim Scott's book on radical candor, if you've read it, is a game changer for leaders and teams, and that is what I want to talk to you about today. So their article on the intersection of those two fields of Kim's work on radical candor and communication and Amy's field of psychological safety and where those intersect this caught my eye. Dig in with me or read the blog post here.

Today on Coffee on Leadership, I want to talk about decision making. Think of all of these decisions you have made today leading up this training. You’ve probably completely forgotten about some of the decisions you’ve made, while others may be more glaring. As a leader, a big part of our job is to make decisions of all sizes. So how do we make the task easier, more informed, and quicker? By using the Ladder Rule. Grab your cup of coffee and dig in with me on this (almost) ten minute episode of the podcast!

For the past three years, most of us have felt like we are leading in uncertainty, and it's a collective experience that we have because of the global pandemic that hit in March of 2020 and the change and transition in marketplaces ever since then. Currently, we're wrapping up the year of 2022 and we're seeing a lot more change on the horizon. So when I'm working with leaders and talking about uncertainty, our main focus is minimizing the uncertainty around you and leaning into the things that you do know for certain. Leadership is about taking what you know to make incremental changes going forward to create confidence and movement through transition points. Learn more on this episode of Coffee on Leadership!

In the last three episodes of Coffee on Leadership, I've covered a framework I use when I have just minutes to teach some basics of leadership theory and subsequent development – The ABCs of Leadership Development. Today we're doing a recap on those last three episodes and wrapping up with a case study where you can consider those components in a real life scenario. I hope this case study shows not only what it means to make decisions through the lens of the stories of those around you, but also to make decisions in integrity (even when it’s the harder choice). Thanks for being here throughout this series, and I hope you’ll join me on the next one. Cheers and stay tuned!

If you have not yet listened to episode 28, and 29, before today's episode, I encourage you to do so! episode 28 was all things authentic leadership and why that's so important to embrace as a part of your leadership style. Then we go on to episode 29, which is all about why brave leadership is required – how you, as a leader, must show up bravely and courageously for how you interact and engage with others. So episode 28, is the internal process of leadership development, episode 29, more of the external process of leadership development, which leads us to what we're talking about today, creative leadership. Creativity isn’t something to be scared of—it’s something that leaders should run to. I’m sharing why in the full episode, so join me!

Welcome back to Coffee on Leadership. Today we are in week two of a three part series where I'm focusing on the framework I utilize behind the scenes called the ABCs of Leadership Development. Last week, we laid out authentic leadership, where the focus is very much on you as the leader. It's all about self awareness and personal development. So go back and listen. But authenticity cannot live on its own,  leaders have to then step out and be authentic leaders and that takes bravery. So that's where we are tuning in today – brave leadership is about doing the right thing in hard circumstances. It's about the way you engage with the people and teams around you. It's about emotional awareness and intelligence that you can call upon. Authentic leadership is you and your personal leadership journey, the internal work, but brave leadership is the external journey. I frame it that it's the relationship with who you lead, and the impact you have with those who you lead. It's the interaction point, the engagement point, it's the vulnerable space that you get to step into. Ready to dive deeper? Let’s go.

Can I admit that I was a little nervous to record this episode? Authenticity is complicated, especially when it comes to leadership because it is both hard and necessary – scary and freeing, vulnerable, and yet the most trustworthy thing you can do in your leadership. It's not that we're afraid of being authentic, in fact, it’s what most of us want more than anything in the world. But the scary part of it all is knowing that we might show up authentically and not be received with loving kindness. But even though that part is really scary, it's still your job as a leader to keep showing up authentically, because doing so gives others permission to do the same. Today, we're going to be talking about the nuts and bolts of authentic leadership theory. I've been putting off this recording because I know I won't do it justice in a short episode. But at the same time, I need you to know that authentic leadership is required, and that's why it has become foundational to the ABCs of Leadership. So, grab your favorite cup of coffee and join me in today’s conversation!

There is a Mexican restaurant that was close to our house when we used to live in the LA area, and this restaurant is known for the way that they greet their customers when they walk in the front door. So right when you walk in the front door, whichever employee sees you first will yell out, “Hey, where have you been?,” and that feeling of warmth and belonging when they yell that out and give you a big smile, there's just nothing like it. I think that's honestly what I thought of when I pulled out my podcast microphone today and plugged it in – I realized I wanted to give you a little update of where I've been, what I've been up to, and to let you know that we're back and there's gonna be some new episodes rolling out regularly soon. In Episode 18, I chatted about goals with the incredible Martha Hoang, which led to a different convo about creativity in leadership. So in Part 2 we chat about creativity and how that trait plays out in her style as a leader.

Here are the most important things you need to know about my dear friend and gifted leader: "i’m martha, but you can call me marth. i believe in candid vulnerability, feeling empowered, and radiating beauty from the inside out. i have two psychology degrees. i'm an enfj, enneagram type 2. i geek out over anything leadership + development. my personal leadership is: vulnerable, generous, and forgiving. my favorite questions to ask are: ‘what goals are you working toward right now?’ and ‘what’s your favorite thing about yourself?’ i have two full time jobs: freelance photography and global communications for lululemon. if i’m not on my laptop or behind my camera, you can catch me in a good book, driving with no destination with my windows rolled down + blasting my angsty teen playlist, finding a design project to take on, enjoying a good view, with friends, or on a spin bike."

“Daring leaders who live into their values are never silent about hard things.” Brené Brown.

Our values guide our attitudes, behaviors, and decision-making as a leader. If you have been to any of my in-person workshops or sat in my courses as a university student, then you know I always start in the same place--with your values. It has always been a natural starting point for leaders because leaders make decisions every. single. day. And my job, as an educator passionate about connecting your ideas to action from a place of deeply integrated leadership, means that I need to show you how to create those maps for yourself to understand why you do what you do, so that you can find alignment between your being and doing.

Values Micro-Lesson: https://www.instagram.com/p/B6vs5P0hfuB/

And if you do know your values, take some time to reflect:

  1. How will I integrate these values into my work and leadership now?
  2. Why does that matter most to me?
