At the Regional Emmys on June 27th 2026, FNX | First Nations Experience received 7 nominations and won four. Two of the wins were for the show Navajo Highways, a WONDERFUL children's show which entertains as well as teaches, conceived of and realized by Pete Sands (pictured). On this edition of KVC-Arts we'll hear from FNX Station Manager Frank Blanquet about the history and various aspects of FNX, as well as a couple of the programs which received nominations and/or wins - including Navajo Highways.
Pop punk and Indy rock! More with SEPT with David Fleming in conversation with Ben Ochoa and Misa Lara continuing the exploration of their newest EP, High Garden! And with Bambi Marr in studio as well, we’ll hear about some of the video aspects for the new release, as well as touching on the video and inspiration for an earlier single, Braces.
We were first introduced to the pop punk band, SEPT almost 2 years ago to the day, talking about their self titled EP among others. We had Ben Ochoa, Misa LAra and Bambi Marr in the studio quite recently to talk about the newest release, High Garden, as well as some of the video work involved. The conversation was extended enough to cover two KVC-Arts, though each installment stands quite nicely. Between the two shows we touch a bit on each song in one way or another.
David Fleming continues his discussion with Tim Flores about the jazz fusion group, Kittyhawk. Thanks to Tim (and some incredible technology and tech support) we now have a live album from a group which stopped playing together long before the cd was released. The producing of the cd was an arduous process, as it required extracting and repairing recordings from some rather unusual sources. The result is "Kittyhawk: Reclaimed Bootlegs."
David Fleming speaks with Tim Flores about an idea he had - and then championed. The result was "Kittyhawk: Reclaimed Bootlegs," songs captured live through a variety of clandestine recordings during the heyday of this VERY unique jazz fusion group, featuring the Chapman Stick... and at times, two.
Modern Natives: An Illustrated Collection of Reimagined Coast Salish Myths. This is the latest from Andrea Grant. We'll hear more about this absolutely wonderful new book, as well as some of her work in the world of graphic novels, including some which explore and tell of some Native American mythology, as well as a REALLY cool Edgar Allen Poe adaptation (to name just a couple). We also heard a bit about Minx, Andrea's superhero alter-ego which initially came to us in 4 issues but is now assembled into a single book. Minx works her way into the Modern Natives book as well. Andrea Grant's latest book is Modern Natives: An Illustrated Collection of Reimagined Coast Salish Myths. This edition of KVC-Arts is an introduction to Andrea as author, artist, poet and more - and looking at some film work past and present.
Jonathan Karrant with The Joe Alterman Trio is an absolutely FANTASTIC release. On this edition of KVC-Arts, David Fleming speaks with Jonathan about the album, and we'll get a touch of the music as well. Blending jazz standards with tunes from jazz greats - which may or may not be a so called "standard." Tunes which you may associate with Nancy Wilson, Les McCann, Wes Montgomery... even Jerry Lewis! Mix these in with a couple pop megahits with a WONDERFUL jazz treatment (Your Song, Everybody's Talking, Don't Let Me be Lonely Tonight), and you have "Jonathan Karrant with The Joe Alterman Trio Live in Concert." This - and a sneak peak at his NEXT release, due out in September.

Two tunes from "On and On" made it to this concert and it's really nice to see (and hear) the evolution OF these tunes. The others are tunes which are attention getters, just scanning the back of the disc. Some you may only know of as instrumentals... and Jonathan delivers FUN, fun takes! The first broadcast of this show happened to fall on Mother's Day, and we just HAPPEN to begin the program he released FOR Mother's Day!

David Fleming speaks with Marina Jurica-Preston about The Secret Garden, as well as her role as Lily. Many in this region know Marina as the meteorologist with CBS-LA. Now you have a chance to experience her as an actress, as she grew up with, and received her formal education in both music and science, currently pursuing her PhD in paleoclimatology. The Secret Garden opens March 28th at Inland Valley Repertory Theatre, taking on the most successful musical version- the 1991 musical which ran on Broadway.
For forty-plus years, beyond being the soloist and/or pianist with many of the most renowned symphonies in the U.S. and beyond, Jeffrey Siegel has been performing/presenting "Keyboard Conversations." This is a concert setting, though before each piece he explains not only a bit of the history behind it and things to look forward to within the piece, but also some interesting facts one might not know, unless you happen to have REALLY studied the piece or composer. Adélaïde Labille-Guiard was a painter in 18th century France, when women were barely recognized, and for the most part, not welcomed as such. Despite this, she ended up being amongst the first, and very FEW women to be admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. David Fleming speaks with Janell Strube, author of Adelaide: Painter of the Revolution. This work of historical fiction takes place leading up to the French Revolution... though the prologue begins at the absolute HEIGHT... and in the heart... of one of the major revolts in 1793, much like an action movie drawing you right in!
Continuing the conversation about a fantastic new album, Father Son!A mix wonderful, wonderful treatments of standards and originals, as well as one cover that I don’t think I ever heard in the world of jazz.  this is one that belongs in any respectable jazz library, and the conversation was both informative and fun. Lots of laughter.
Father Son - from Nathan & Noah East, out for just a little over a month now. David Fleming speaks with both Nathan and Noah, with 95% of the conversation on the new album. Several incredible original mainstream jazz compositions. Outstanding covers as well including Killer Joe, Over the Rainbow, My Favorite Things, Yesterday, and more. A personalized treatment puts it mildly. Some of these have such an incredible touch on them that you would think that they weren’t covers at all.
Golda Zahra has been immersed in the world of opera since she was four. A polyglot, she’s able to capture nuance in performances which others may not be able to attain. It’s not ALL classical and operatic with Golda though. She also loves jazz, pop, broadway standards… even Madonna.Having returned from Italy close to a year ago, where she continued her studies with amongst the most elite, Golda now has a series of concerts going from near the end of May through the summer. On this edition of KVC-Arts it's David Fleming in conversation with guitarist Lee Ritenour. You’ll find him MAINLY in the world of jazz, with around 35 or so albums under his own name, also as part of the GRP All-Star Big Band, the group Fourplay, and other projects. We'll hear about Ritenour’s latest, along with Dave Grusin, called BRASIL. Also, helping Pink Floyd, or rather specifically, David Gilmour – at a point when he was absolutely STUCK trying to figure out what to do at a point in one of Pink Floyd’s MOST well-known tunes.
With over 30 albums under her name, David Fleming speaks with Eliane Elias about her latest, Time and Again. It’s a collection of eight original tunes, three of which existed previously, but were reimagined for this recording. On this album, she explores various concepts of time… The past, the future, how we use time, good times and bad times…  several wonderful, wonderful guests on this album as well. It has a side one and side, two feel, which is natural as it has been released on vinyl in addition to CD. We also hear of her recording with Chick Corea... what would turn out to be Corea's last.

Top Dog/Underdog…This is the story of two African-American brothers, Lincoln and Booth. Lincoln actually works putting on white-face night after night portraying Abraham Lincoln. Booth is trying to get out of the life of a street hustle.Both are trying to make their way in society, dealing with work, women, racism, as well as a troubled upbringing.KVCR’s Champ Chipman recently interviewed Gregg Daniel, directing this Pulitzer Prize winning play at the Pasadena Playhouse, running through March 23.Last week we got a bit of an introduction to Daniel. On this edition of the program we’ll hear more about the play, as well as the many opportunities it provides on stage and off.

Many know Emmet Cahill from the current iteration of Celtic Thunder, filling the spot when Paul Byron left the group. Working around his Celtic Thunder tours and recording dates, Emmet HAS been touring as a solo performer as well for the last several years. His latest tour has a stop in Palm Desert February 5th as part of the St. Margaret's Friends of Music Concert Series. David Fleming speaks with Emmet just a BIT about Celtic Thunder but focused much of the time on his solo career. Namely, some of the tunes he tends to bring out - which is a mix of American Standards and Irish classics. Songs which have a storytelling aspect to them and tend to transport the listener to another time and place.

The play follows the friendship of Marie Curie and the lesser known Hertha Ayrton, a scientist. Neither welcomed in the scientific world, but whose work eclipsed that of their husbands - both passed away by the time this play takes place. The play was taken from actual correspondence from these two women. Produced by Afterglow Theatre Company.

The source for entertainment for many is diving into the world of a good book. For many others, that's difficult - if not impossible. On this edition of KVC-Arts, David Fleming speaks with Diane Shimota, Adult Literacy Coordinator for the A.K. Smiley Public Library in Redlands. They'll be celebrating adult learners with an anthology of their work on September 29th.
Damian McGinty, while a part of the original lineup of Celtic Thunder, at the of 14 was not part of the original intention of the group. Still, he was with the band for a number of years. A brief hiatus gave us a stint on the TV show Glee, as well as some solo works…And he's part of the lineup once again with Celtic Thunder current tour with several stops in the region, including Riverside on the 13th. David Fleming spoke with Damian about Glee, and of course his time with Celtic Thunder as a child AND as an adult. We'll hear about some of his solo recordings in a near future show.

This is a re-edit of a conversation with David Fleming and Maurice Williams, who passed away in early August at the age of 86. His first time on the charts was in the late 50's with the song "Little Darlin'," (as The Gladiolas) though the biggest hit from Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, undoubtedly, was STAY. This one also has a nice behind the scenes story, though it's pretty much straight forward with a simple listen. It's the end of a date you don't want to end.

David Fleming speaks with Jane Kirkpatrick, author of 41 books, including "The Healing of Natalie Curtis." This is a wotk of historic fiction about a woman who helped preserve music, dance and language of the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni Tribes at a time when many sought to ban such things.

He was recruited by Hugh Masekela for an album which produced "Grazing in the Grass," and took him to Woodstock as well as the Monterey Pop Festival. He's worked as a sideman with many, and has 28 (or so) albums under his own name.Onthe next KVC-Arts David Fleming speaks with Skipper about one of the most recent - one which earned him a NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Jazz record - instrumental. SUCH a great disc! We'll also hear about one that was a bit of an avant-garde piece, yet still QUITE cool to listen to. We'll touch briefly as well on his time with Stevie Wonder... but it's mostly jazz.And - jazz in this area! Each chapter begins with a plant you can find in the mountain wilderness, and the ways to use it for food. Each chapter then goes on to tell the story of Michelle Dowd, and the Angeles National Forest cult in which she was raised. The cult was started by her grandfather, known to all as the last prophet. He would not die, but rather live to be 500 and lead the organization through the impending apocalypse. David Fleming continues his conversation with Evan J. Marshall - sometimes known as Mr. Solo Mandolin, due to his ability to play several parts of the mandolin at the same time, giving self-accompaniment. We'll hear about bluegrass, Western swing, as well as classical. AND - his take on the final movement from The William Tell Overture AKA the theme from The Lone Ranger.
Writers on the Block started off as pretty much an open mic for writers... mostly poets. It soon became mainly an online Facebook presence where people could share their works, as well as give and receive feedback. It then became a live event once again - the first Wednesday of every month at The Vault Martini Bar Redlands (which turns/turned 20 years old this year)! There's a sign up sheet starting at 8, and by 9 be ready for, well, readings and recitations. I got there as someone was reading from a short story. Many, many poems followed as we went through the signup sheet. I heard some very personal pieces, and some which were designed for a laugh. I heard some works which adhered strictly to meter and form... and others were a rant on paper. And all of which I enjoyed thoroughly.The main driving force behind Writers on the Block these days is the combination of Alfred Valdivia Jr., Jamie Lee Musser, and Jose Nevarez AKA Vill Ain. Entertainment to experience… or to see!Whatever branch of service you might have served in, you may recall just how much they molded you into being a soldier, sailor, marine, etc... but they didn't do a WHOLE lot to prepare you for being a civilian once again.Enter Mil-Tree, and their program, "Tapestries of Transformation." The purpose of which is connecting veterans back to their community and reducing chronic loneliness and isolation.The culmination of the program will be a theatrical performance in the Spring, which comes together as the culmination of several workshops - drumming, writing and storytelling, acting, and movement. John Jorgenson grew up in Redlands (and while at University of Redlands, actually played clarinet with Benny Goodman conducting!!!), and at one point worked at Disneyland - playing in three different bands comprised of the same four guys. He was in The Desert Rose Band, along with Chris Hillman of the Byrds and Herb Pederson, who’s played with more people than I can name in one breath. He was also in the award-winning Hellecasters, and was invited by Elton John to be part of an 18-month tour, which turned into a 6-year stay. John Jorgenson is also one of the forerunners in the world of Gypsy Jazz.I interviewed him just over a decade ago when he was getting ready to perform in Redlands, though this was before the creation of KVC-Arts. On this edition of KVC-Arts, we'll hear from Johnny A Hickman about this region of California as well as bands from the area (Cracker's roots are indeed Redlands, San Bernardino, Highland, Riverside...), another phrase or three talking about the songwriting process for Cracker, several REALLY cool tunes from Hickman's early solo release, Palmhenge - as well as the origin of that name, and yes - Cracker's breakout hit - Teen Angst.
The core of Cracker has always been Johnny A Hickman and David Lowery. Before moving to Virginia, Cracker was VERY much steeped in The Inland Empire region of Southern California (The Dangers, Camper Van Beethoven & more). So in early November when they were getting ready to wrap up their 2023 tour in Highland (a literal 10 miles from where I sit), I happily grabbed a chance for an interview. It was very much at the 11th hour, and David was teaching that day, but I was quite happy to speak with Johnny. Either one would have been wonderful. LOTS of GREAT material with both these guys!Even though there wasn't room in a KVC-Arts prior to their performance, we still spoke for just under an hour, so I could grab a snippet of the conversation to be used as a feature during Morning Edition and All Things Considered to promote their appearance and use the rest of the conversation for a KVC-Arts in the relative near future.So - taking us into the new year, it's Cracker for the next TWO KVC-Arts. Some of the items for the first show... The songs "Low," "San Bernardino Boy," "Eurotrash Girl," "March of the Billionaires" and more... and of course Cracker as a name for the band. These days it sometimes gets a person dinged on Facebook.
Last year I thought I'd just pad the KVC-Arts falling on Christmas with music from someone who'd been a guest on KVC-Arts in the past... to just kind of round out the show. Then I decided there were more than enough past guests to fill and entire program. So that's what I did. And this year we're getting it again. Near the end of October 2023, Chris Thayer put together a poster which represents - in order - bands and projects going from great 90’s rock, to love songs and lullabies, to the blues bands - both jump swing show bands and grittier, greasier explorations. Every time I speak with Al Pitrelli (Music Director for, and one of the lead guitarist with, Trans-Siberian Orchestra), we're speaking about TSO's upcoming tour. Also every time, if I have 3, 5, 12 minutes left, I'll ask for a quick mention of one part or another of Al's extensive and varied career. Last time we spoke I just finally asked if we could do a NON-Trans-Siberian Orchestra at some point, to which he agreed. We not only arranged for such an interview, but it was also set to go for an extended length of time to be used for KVC-Arts #500. I was hoping for an hour... I closed at an hour and a half.Last KVC-Arts we heard primarily about Pitrelli's work with Randy Coven. Tonight we have a special one-hour edition of the program talking about music from, or his work with - get ready - Alice Cooper (where I ask if one of his most searing and soulful solos was, well, a segue), Dee Snider & Widowmaker, Asia, Morning Wood, lightly on Savatage, a bit of session work, a REALLY cool grouping with O'2L, touching only SLIGHTLY on TSO, and one more from his work with Randy Coven...I skipped over Megadeth, and other Savatage and TSO material...I'm sure there's some material in there I've forgotten to mention, but I can say confidently that the first half hour has (for the most part) more of the hard rock kinda stuff, and the second half more acoustic…
David Fleming speaks with Anoushka Shankar. The initial conversation was when she was in the area to perform, with orchestra, one of the concertos for sitar and orchestra written by her father, the late Ravi Shankar. Beyond the concerto works, we spoke about some of her other releases, as she'll be in the area quite soon in quintet form. A rather atypical grouping, though SO nice! We'll hear about this, a couple of her releases, "Rise" and "Breathing Underwater." We'll also hear about her work with Herbie Hancock, Sting, and more, as well as a VERY moving piece called "In Her Name," combining music, dance, and spoken word. Originally called "In Jyoti's Name," the piece is "in loving memory of Jyoti Singh Pandey, who was beaten and gang-raped on a bus in Delhi," leading to her death two days later. VERY powerful! Also touching lightly on Anoushka scoring one of India's first three movies ever made!

One night at The Apollo in 1958, George Treadwell fired the entire lineup of The Drifters. He then hired all of the members of The Five Crowns to become The Drifters. Charlie Thomas (along with Benjamin Earl Nelson - better known as Ben E. King) was a member of The Five Crowns, and while the original "classic" Drifters produced some hits, some of the biggest came from the era when Thomas was in the group. This was also the time when Lieber and Stoller were writing for the group. On January 31st, 2023, Charlie Thomas passed away at the age of 85. David Fleming interviewed Thomas in late 2015 when he was about to perform in the region, and has re-edited the conversation for this edition of KVC-Arts.
