In 2001, Boston Medical Center opened the doors to the Preventative Food Pantry after an overwhelming number of patients told their BMC physicians that they were having trouble affording nutritional food for their families.

Located in the Dowling Building, the pantry supplied food to 500 families per month in its early days. Today, it supplies over 50,000 pounds of food per month to more than 1,800 families in the Boston area community. That's 7,000 people per month – 40% whom are children.

The soil is tilled and plans are in place to plant leafy vegetables, tomatoes, cucumbers and more. But this green space isn't on a farm or even in someone's backyard: it's on the top of Boston Medical Center.

When you're visiting or a patient at an urban hospital, it can seem that green spaces are very limited. Having access to freshly grown produce can be extremely beneficial to your health.

Vegetables are harvested from the rooftop garden twice a week. On Mondays, the Boston Public Health Commission Food Pantry picks up veggies, which are distributed at Healthy Infant, Healthy Child pantry in Mattapan. On Wednesdays, BNAN Youth Corps teens simply wheel the harvest down a few corridors to the hospital pantry.

Women are learning more about breast density these days because it's now state law that they are notified by a written letter if they have dense breasts on their mammogram. Amy Fitzpatrick, MD, of BMC's Belkin Breast Health Center points out that having dense breasts is normal, about 1 in 2 women having a mammogram will be informed that they indeed have dense breasts. It's important for women with dense breasts to understand that they may have an increased risk of getting breast cancer, and that cancer is more difficult to detect on a mammogram when there is dense breast tissue. Therefore, women with dense breasts are encouraged to talk with their providers about how they should be monitored.
