Life is short! It’s much shorter than we might have thought when we first became aware that someday our lives would come to an end. Young lovers sometimes romanticize about marrying, raising families, and growing old together, but the reality of this last phase is not so romantic, as age brings with it a number of problems and realizations. And one of those realizations is that life is indeed short, and the time for accomplishments is running out.

Note from the Editor: Thank you for your questions! The Bible says that there is a spirit in man, not that he is one (e.g., Job 32:8). And while our spirit does return to God upon our death, it does not represent a “conscious entity” of any sort, as Ecclesiastes itself makes plain, stating that “the dead know nothing” (Ecclesiastes 9:5)—an observation verified by many other passages. And Jesus clearly described the event in which Peter, James and John saw the future, glorified bodies of Moses and Elijah as a vision, and not as a current reality (Matthew 17:9). To learn more about the spirit in man, you may want to read our article “Mystery of the Mind” in the September-October 2010 Tomorrow’s World Magazine. It is available online at tomorrowsworld.org.

It seems that no place is entirely safe from violence and terrorism. The memory of September 11, 2001 remains a painful scar on the national consciousness of the United States, but terrorism is a worldwide problem. In 2004, Madrid, Spain, experienced horrific train bombings that killed nearly 200 and injured 2,000 more. In 2007, dual bombings in Iraqi markets ripped apart 800 victims and injured about 1,500 more. In 2016, an ISIS-claimed attack killed 29 at a Bangladeshi café. ISIS-linked fighting rages in Mindanao, Philippines. Boko Haram has terrorized Nigeria for years. Countries throughout the Middle East and Africa have been wracked by almost-nonstop war and violence for generations.

Do you have a family cow? It’s quite likely that you don’t, and it’s likely that none of your neighbors do either. But if you lived in the 18th or 19th centuries, chances are you’d have a cow, a horse, or maybe an ox. You’d probably have some chickens. You’d certainly have a garden for vegetables, and a few acres of land on which to scratch out a living. In the late 1700s, there were roughly two million people living in the American colonies. The most populous colony was Virginia, with about 500,000 of those people. In 1775, only about two percent of them lived in small towns and cities, while most of the rest lived and worked on small farms of less than 200 acres (HistoryIsFun.org, “Colonial Life”).

Last year, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards (DofE) for young people entered its 60th year. In all that time it has become phenomenally successful, and has grown to be the world’s leading youth achievement award. Meanwhile, the Duke of Edinburgh, founder and patron of the programme, has, at age 96, announced his retirement from public engagements. Having devoted 70 years of his life to public service as the Queen’s husband and consort, he richly deserves a quieter life. It is widely recognized that the DofE Awards are one of his finest achievements and a potent legacy.

My father was always fascinated by storms. News of one approaching would draw him to our small front porch, where he would stand, watching it build along the horizon. As a child, I would join him at times, staring into the dark clouds in the distance—seeing them move, swirl, and gather as they darkened further still, and wondering what they held in store as they drew closer to our home.

Thirty years ago, on July 29, 1987, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and French President François Mitterrand signed an historic agreement to build a train tunnel under the English Channel. Its purpose was to allow faster and more efficient travel between France and England. This engineering marvel is called the Eurotunnel, Channel Tunnel, or affectionately, “the Chunnel.” This connection between Britain and France has benefited both sides, but what does this accomplishment portend for the future? Is it possible that the Eurotunnel could serve as a symbol of the type of cooperation all nations will one day exhibit?

Why have nations of the West dominated the globe for the last five hundred years, when for centuries they lagged behind great civilizations in India, China and the Moslem world? Why were a few small countries on the western fringe of the great Eurasian continent able to spread their culture all around the world when other cultures did not? Why did a group of daring navigators from Western Europe—Columbus in 1492, Vasco de Gama in 1499, Ferdinand Magellan in the 1520s and others—launch the Age of Discovery with globe-girdling voyages in tiny ships, instead of men such as the great Chinese Admiral Zheng He, who sailed thousands of miles across the Indian Ocean in huge treasure ships nearly a century earlier?

Jesus Christ warns those of us living in these end times that we should expect to hear of “wars and rumors of wars” and that “nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” (Matthew 24:6–7). And, it seems, there are many kinds of war! Hot war, cold war, guerrilla war, cyber war… even holy war. Mankind invents many ways to engage in conflict, and Bible prophecy assures us that powerful wars between nations are, indeed, ahead of us. One type of warfare you will be hearing about more and more in the coming months is trade war. Trade wars have been around for centuries, and one may be coming soon to an economy near you!

Towards the end of the 19th century, physicists considered radio waves to be “invisible light.” In many respects, that is exactly what radio waves are: an electromagnetic frequency, oscillation or signal outside of the visible spectrum that allows communication to occur over great distances. One of the wonders of creation is that communication of this nature is only possible due to the ionosphere—a layer of our atmosphere—above us. The waves emitted from an electromagnetic impulse are sent at the speed of light outwards and upwards, and without the ionosphere reflecting these signals back to earth, many waves would fly away into space.

In a previous article in this series, we saw how God dramatically intervened on numerous occasions to guide the course of history. We saw how He preserved and prepared Europe to play a unique role on the world stage (“Europe, Christianity & God’s Plan,” Tomorrow’s World, January-February 2017). And we saw how His intervention paved the way for the social and religious influences that have shaped our world to this very day. At critical turning points that determined the future direction of world history, the Persians, the Muslims and the Mongols were each prevented from conquering and spreading their religious cultures over the continent of Europe. However, few today understand why the peoples of Europe were protected from these foreign conquerors. Even fewer recognize how God preserved the remnants of true Christianity scattered among other competing versions of “Christianity” that struggled to dominate the European continent. Yet Europe truly has, indeed, been an important stage where God has been working out His plan on earth.

Three hundred miles to the east of South America lie the Falklands, a British Overseas Territory consisting of two main islands and over seven hundred smaller ones. The sovereignty of the Falklands, known to the Argentinians as the Islas Malvinas, has long been a source of dispute. On April 2, 1982, Argentine forces invaded the islands under orders from their new military leader, General Galtieri, who mistakenly believed that the British government would not respond militarily to this action. What followed was a 74-day occupation, before a United Kingdom task force, waging at times a tenuous, hard-fought campaign, forcibly recaptured the islands on behalf of the 1,800 British citizens living there.

In addition, they are less religious and less likely to read or trust the Bible than other generations (Christianity Today, “Gleanings,” May 16, 2016). Social critics claim that parents and teachers have pandered to them to build their feeling of self-esteem, showering Millennials with meaningless participation awards. Our western society is usually willing to admit to the fact that there are many "problems": big city violence, rebellious young people, broken families and confused children. But what we normally do is fail to find the real cause of the problem so we can get at an actual solution. Rather, our modern approach to problems is to try to treat the "symptoms"—without ever searching out the genuine cause. For instance, many researchers have found that millions of people living in supposedly deprived areas of the world are often seemingly immune to modern illnesses such as cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes. Entire societies in some of the Pacific islands, people living in the Hunza Valley in Asia and elsewhere very rarely are found to have problems with cancer, diabetes, etc. But when "modern" salesmen and food suppliers come in with ice cream, soft drinks and other "goodies," suddenly the rates of these diseases begin to explode! Think!

One of the most intriguing and outstanding achievements in Canadian history occurred between 1871 and 1885, within two decades of Canada's confederation in 1867: the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) across the continent uniting eastern Canada with its newest province, British Columbia, on the Pacific coast. Today we take this railway for granted, but at the time it proved the most vigourous, acclaimed and possibly foolhardy venture possible. The late Canadian author, Pierre Burton, wrote possibly the most extensive account of this achievement in his two volume set, The Canadian Dream and The Last Spike (McClelland and Stewart Ltd., Toronto, 1970).

Dolly—arguably the most famous sheep in world history—was born 20 years ago, on July 5, 1996. She was the first mammal ever to be cloned as an exact genetic copy of her mother, and born healthy. The scientific community and news headlines hailed the breakthrough and postulated that now human cloning would rapidly follow. Is that prospect something humankind should be sheepish about when we consider the potential dangers, or does it offer a solution to human mortality?

In the midst of a crisis, we often ask, "Where is God?" We wonder, "Why is He allowing me to suffer?" or, even "Why did He allow my loved one to die?" Such questions may run through our minds in stressful and despairing moments when we face sickness, pain and even the possibility of death.

I suppose it is a sign of growing older when one falls into the habit of reading the obituary pages in the newspaper. Especially if you have been in one place for a very long time, you find the names of friends, neighbors and business associates written up on those pages. It is a sobering reminder of our mortality.

It is not very large—in fact, it is only a little larger than your closed fist. Yet its small size belies the unique and vital role it plays in your life. Indeed, without it you would have no life at all! Hour by hour, minute by minute and even second by second, you depend on it utterly, yet unless there is something wrong with it we often fail to give it a second thought.

A little more than 65 years ago, in his April 1951 farewell address to the United States Congress, General Douglas MacArthur grimly stated his thoughts about the global conflicts in which he had played a major role. Speaking as a life-long military man—a senior leader at some of modern history's fiercest battles—he put the entire weight of his experience into his observation that, although mankind has from the beginning of time sought peace, all efforts for international peace have ultimately failed. Chillingly, he warned: "If we will not devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door."

By the time you read this magazine, I trust that most of you have received the special "semi-annual" letter from our Editor in Chief, Dr. Roderick C. Meredith. Twice a year, he writes to Tomorrow's World subscribers with special "insider" news about the Work and about what the living Jesus Christ is doing in our world as we approach the end of this present age. Despite so many Satanic attacks on long-held biblical values, true Christians can remain loyal and faithful to their Savior, responding to Him with love and obedience, made possible by the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus stated in John 10:27, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me."

Daily, we read and see pictures of growing millions of distraught human beings fleeing their homelands in a desperate attempt to reach a place of safety. These people are increasingly arriving in Europe from Africa, the Middle East and other regions. Why? Because their human governments are failing. Because their own people are "desperate" to find a place where they and their children can have a reasonably sound feeling of physical safety and procure the basics of life, such as food, water and proper sanitation. - Full text at: http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/magazines/2016/may-june/are-we-ready-for-gods-intervention#sthash.mFmpicBA.dpuf

Suppose for a moment that your employer came to you with the news that you would henceforward be required to work longer hours for a lower wage. Have you seen the slogan, "No Boundaries"? "No Boundaries" is a pop-culture catchphrase that has a bold sound and a big problem. Even though it sounds gung-ho, it actually contradicts a Biblical principle that is fundamental to success in life. A proper understanding of "boundaries" is one of the most critical lessons for a young person to learn. - Full text at: http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/magazines/2016/may-june/no-boundaries

Does God really guide the course of history? Few today realize that Moses, the Exodus and the Israelite kings (David and Solomon) were part of one of the most significant turning points in the history of the world. That turning point affected other powerful nations during a 500-year period from 1400 to 900bc. The "trigger" for this historic change was a spectacular series of events that occurred around 1200bc. Those dramatic events provide a remarkable confirmation that God guides the course of human history—just as the Bible states: "He makes nations great, and destroys them" (Job 12:23), and "He removes kings and raises up kings" (Daniel 2:21). - Full text at: http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/magazines/2016/may-june/rise-of-the-chosen-people

As most of you who follow the news know, increasing numbers of analysts and pundits are now commenting on how quickly world events and societal changes are occurring. For we are truly approaching the "end of the age" as all Bible-believing Christians should know. For we as Christians are instructed to "watch and pray" (Luke 21:36). We should all be aware of the fast-moving changes around the world—especially in the light of Bible prophecy. - Full text at: http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/magazines/2016/march-april/make-each-day-count#sthash.GGeJrdYt.dpuf

Many believe that Western civilization was built on Roman law and Greek ideas of democracy that date from more than 2,000 years ago. However, few today realize that much of the culture and civilization of the Western world rests on the foundation of five books written 3,500 years ago by a man named Moses. Though skeptics claim that Moses is a fictional character and assert that taking his writings literally has been a detriment to humanity, such claims ignore the remarkable content and undeniable impact the books of Moses have had on the course of world history. - Full text at: http://www.tomorrowsworld.org/magazines/2016/march-april/five-books-that-changed-the-world#sthash.81B1sRVn.dpuf
