Life is short! It’s much shorter than we might have thought when we first became aware that someday our lives would come to an end. Young lovers sometimes romanticize about marrying, raising families, and growing old together, but the reality of this last phase is not so romantic, as age brings with it a number of problems and realizations. And one of those realizations is that life is indeed short, and the time for accomplishments is running out.

Note from the Editor: Thank you for your questions! The Bible says that there is a spirit in man, not that he is one (e.g., Job 32:8). And while our spirit does return to God upon our death, it does not represent a “conscious entity” of any sort, as Ecclesiastes itself makes plain, stating that “the dead know nothing” (Ecclesiastes 9:5)—an observation verified by many other passages. And Jesus clearly described the event in which Peter, James and John saw the future, glorified bodies of Moses and Elijah as a vision, and not as a current reality (Matthew 17:9). It seems that no place is entirely safe from violence and terrorism. The memory of September 11, 2001 remains a painful scar on the national consciousness of the United States, but terrorism is a worldwide problem. In 2004, Madrid, Spain, experienced horrific train bombings that killed nearly 200 and injured 2,000 more. In 2007, dual bombings in Iraqi markets ripped apart 800 victims and injured about 1,500 more. In 2016, an ISIS-claimed attack killed 29 at a Bangladeshi café. ISIS-linked fighting rages in Mindanao, Philippines. Boko Haram has terrorized Nigeria for years. Countries throughout the Middle East and Africa have been wracked by almost-nonstop war and violence for generations.

Do you have a family cow? It’s quite likely that you don’t, and it’s likely that none of your neighbors do either. But if you lived in the 18th or 19th centuries, chances are you’d have a cow, a horse, or maybe an ox. You’d probably have some chickens. You’d certainly have a garden for vegetables, and a few acres of land on which to scratch out a living. In the late 1700s, there were roughly two million people living in the American colonies. The most populous colony was Virginia, with about 500,000 of those people. In 1775, only about two percent of them lived in small towns and cities, while most of the rest lived and worked on small farms of less than 200 acres (HistoryIsFun.org, “Colonial Life”).

Last year, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards (DofE) for young people entered its 60th year. In all that time it has become phenomenally successful, and has grown to be the world’s leading youth achievement award. Meanwhile, the Duke of Edinburgh, founder and patron of the programme, has, at age 96, announced his retirement from public engagements. Having devoted 70 years of his life to public service as the Queen’s husband and consort, he richly deserves a quieter life. It is widely recognized that the DofE Awards are one of his finest achievements and a potent legacy.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Roderick C. Meredith, Editor-in-Chief of Tomorrow’s World and Presiding Evangelist of the Living Church of God. He had been suffering from cancer and died peacefully on May 18, 2017. He would have been 87 years old in June.

Thirty years ago, on July 29, 1987, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and French President François Mitterrand signed an historic agreement to build a train tunnel under the English Channel. Its purpose was to allow faster and more efficient travel between France and England. This engineering marvel is called the Eurotunnel, Channel Tunnel, or affectionately, “the Chunnel.” This connection between Britain and France has benefited both sides, but what does this accomplishment portend for the future? Is it possible that the Eurotunnel could serve as a symbol of the type of cooperation all nations will one day exhibit?

Jesus Christ warns those of us living in these end times that we should expect to hear of “wars and rumors of wars” and that “nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” (Matthew 24:6–7). And, it seems, there are many kinds of war! Hot war, cold war, guerrilla war, cyber war… even holy war. Mankind invents many ways to engage in conflict, and Bible prophecy assures us that powerful wars between nations are, indeed, ahead of us. On June 23, 2016, the UK voted in a referendum on the stark question, “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union, or leave the European Union?” The shocking result, by 52 percent to 48 percent, was in favor of leaving. So began an unprecedented national convulsion of historic (and even “hysteric”) proportions, as a protracted and tortuous process of disentanglement began.

One of the leading causes of death among teenagers is suicide. The Centers for Disease Control reports that it is the third-leading cause of death in the United States for young people between the ages of 15 and 24. Only accidents and homicides account for more deaths for this age group. Even more alarming is the fact that suicide is the fourth-leading cause of death for children between 10 and 14 years old, according to teensuicidestastics.com.

On October 31, 2016, the 499th anniversary of Martin Luther’s famous “Ninety-five Theses,” the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis I, traveled to Sweden to take part in the many events there commemorating the beginning of the 500th year of the Protestant Reformation. While there, he participated in a joint prayer service in a Lutheran cathedral in the city of Lund—a cathedral which had once been Catholic, but which was seized when Sweden officially rejected Catholicism as the state religion.

All the reports and images we’ve received from the lunar landers, Mars rovers, Jovian orbiters, deep space probes and all other robotic explorers of our corner of the universe have carried the same message: It’s a mess out there. All of the planets and moons we have explored so far with our spacecrafts and rovers seem quite inhospitable. Every planet but one, that is: this beautiful world we call Earth.

Towards the end of the 19th century, physicists considered radio waves to be “invisible light.” In many respects, that is exactly what radio waves are: an electromagnetic frequency, oscillation or signal outside of the visible spectrum that allows communication to occur over great distances. One of the wonders of creation is that communication of this nature is only possible due to the ionosphere—a layer of our atmosphere—above us. The waves emitted from an electromagnetic impulse are sent at the speed of light outwards and upwards, and without the ionosphere reflecting these signals back to earth, many waves would fly away into space.

In a previous article in this series, we saw how God dramatically intervened on numerous occasions to guide the course of history. We saw how He preserved and prepared Europe to play a unique role on the world stage (“Europe, Christianity & God’s Plan,” Tomorrow’s World, January-February 2017). And we saw how His intervention paved the way for the social and religious influences that have shaped our world to this very day. At critical turning points that determined the future direction of world history, the Persians, the Muslims and the Mongols were each prevented from conquering and spreading their religious cultures over the continent of Europe. However, few today understand why the peoples of Europe were protected from these foreign conquerors. Even fewer recognize how God preserved the remnants of true Christianity scattered among other competing versions of “Christianity” that struggled to dominate the European continent. Yet Europe truly has, indeed, been an important stage where God has been working out His plan on earth.

As Editor in Chief of this magazine, I have a God-given responsibility to genuinely serve all of you subscribers. Right now, tensions are at the boiling point in many nations! Millions in America are genuinely upset over the election of Donald Trump—which was a shock to the media elite, who did not foresee this happening at all. Additional millions are upset and deeply concerned about the “Brexit” vote—indicating that Britain will no doubt withdraw from the European Union and cause a major upheaval in this European project. China and Russia have been stirred by recent events, and tensions are increasing all over the world! As we in this Work of the great God continue to proclaim the full Truth of who we are and what genuinely lies ahead, millions will be deeply upset at us, and this will lead to persecution of God’s true people—just as Jesus Christ prophesied.

Three hundred miles to the east of South America lie the Falklands, a British Overseas Territory consisting of two main islands and over seven hundred smaller ones. The sovereignty of the Falklands, known to the Argentinians as the Islas Malvinas, has long been a source of dispute. On April 2, 1982, Argentine forces invaded the islands under orders from their new military leader, General Galtieri, who mistakenly believed that the British government would not respond militarily to this action. What followed was a 74-day occupation, before a United Kingdom task force, waging at times a tenuous, hard-fought campaign, forcibly recaptured the islands on behalf of the 1,800 British citizens living there.

Have you heard about the “Millennials”? If not, you’re in for a scare. According to Time magazine, they are narcissistic, fame-obsessed, egotistical, lazy, and irresponsible (Time, “Millennials: The Me Me Me Generation,” May 20, 2013). In addition, they are less religious and less likely to read or trust the Bible than other generations (Christianity Today, “Gleanings,” May 16, 2016). Social critics claim that parents and teachers have pandered to them to build their feeling of self-esteem, showering Millennials with meaningless participation awards. From all appearances, they are doomed to failure, dealt a bad hand, a generation without hope. And the frightening thing is that you or someone you know may be a Millennial!

One of my favorite memories as a guitarist in a band is looking out at a crowded dance floor while playing an upbeat tune. Our western society is usually willing to admit to the fact that there are many "problems": big city violence, rebellious young people, broken families and confused children. But what we normally do is fail to find the real cause of the problem so we can get at an actual solution. Rather, our modern approach to problems is to try to treat the "symptoms"—without ever searching out the genuine cause. For instance, many researchers have found that millions of people living in supposedly deprived areas of the world are often seemingly immune to modern illnesses such as cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes. Entire societies in some of the Pacific islands, people living in the Hunza Valley in Asia and elsewhere very rarely are found to have problems with cancer, diabetes, etc. But when "modern" salesmen and food suppliers come in with ice cream, soft drinks and other "goodies," suddenly the rates of these diseases begin to explode! Think!

Lists of great leaders who have influenced the course of history usually include names like Hammurabi, Plato, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Queen Victoria, and George Washington. Surprisingly, Jesus Christ is seldom placed in this category by modern, secular historians. Due to this omission or only limited references, millions of people have no idea of the tremendous impact Jesus Christ had on human history. Yet, when the curtain of silence is drawn back, the evidence of Jesus' historical influence is undeniable.

One of the most intriguing and outstanding achievements in Canadian history occurred between 1871 and 1885, within two decades of Canada's confederation in 1867: the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) across the continent uniting eastern Canada with its newest province, British Columbia, on the Pacific coast. Today we take this railway for granted, but at the time it proved the most vigourous, acclaimed and possibly foolhardy venture possible. The late Canadian author, Pierre Burton, wrote possibly the most extensive account of this achievement in his two volume set, The Canadian Dream and The Last Spike (McClelland and Stewart Ltd., Toronto, 1970).

I recall my first real experience with hummingbirds. My wife had hung a hummingbird feeder from a pole behind our house, and after a few days the air itself seemed to be buzzing with the tiny birds. One was clearly attempting to dominate the space and would attempt to chase the others off, away from the feeder, but the other two or three would continue to come back for more, and before long there was a virtual "hummingbird war" going on!
