In 2020, a doctor handed me a scan of my brain. It showed 40 lesions. That was my "line of demarcation"—the moment my world split into "before" and "after" the MS diagnosis. In that cold, clinical room, I realized that my voice (my Sauti) was the one thing the disease couldn't take, but it was up to me to make sure it was heard.

This Sony ZV E-10 isn't just a piece of tech I bought to look "professional." It is a weapon of Fearless Productivity. It’s the tool I chose to ensure that even on the days when my body feels like it's failing, my message—and your potential—continues to rise.

But Fearless Productivity isn't about being perfectly healthy; it’s about being perfectly purposeful. I bought the Sony ZV E-10 as my first vlogging camera because I refused to let my story end in a hospital bed. I needed a way to amplify my Sauti (Voice) while I still had the breath to use it.

In this video, I’m not just reviewing specs. I’m showing you how I use this lens to document my Epic Quests and why you don't need a perfect life to start creating an impact.

Stop being a character. Pick up your pen—or your camera—and become the author.

The Voice of Resilience with Tanya Blackwell | Courageous Creativity Show

Description:

Welcome back to the Courageous Creativity Show! I am absolutely thrilled to sit down with an amazing creator, writer, and fellow Atlanta Dramatists board member, Tanya Blackwell. In this episode, we explore what it takes to step away from the familiar and ensure your authentic voice truly rises. Tanya recently made the profound decision to leave a highly successful 18-year corporate career in research administration to pursue her creative passions full-time.

Navigating life's major transitions requires a strong community and a willingness to step into the unknown. We dive deep into how artistic expression, world travel, and dedicated mentorship can be the ultimate tools for healing and empowerment. Having poured my own creative energy into playwriting with works like LYRICS, I deeply appreciate the sanctuary that the theater world provides, and it is a joy to share that passion with a fellow creator.

Why You Should Watch This Episode:

  • The Leap of Faith [08:39]: Hear Tanya’s honest account of leaving the safety of corporate America to fully bet on her writing and creative path.
  • Healing Through Movement [24:27]: Learn about "Shake It Off with Tanya," a unique somatic experience combining Zumba and mindfulness to help you feel, move, and let go of stored trauma.
  • Global Inspiration [27:36]: Get inspired by Tanya's transformative travels, particularly her deep spiritual connection to South Africa, and the realization that incredible experiences are worth infinitely more than material things.
  • The Power of Theater [34:02]: We discuss the immense importance of the Atlanta Black Theater Festival (ABTF) and why protecting and amplifying our stories is more critical than ever.
  • Affirming Our Men [44:20]: Discover Tanya’s beautiful "Good Morning Black Man" project, an intuitive audio series designed to uplift, love on, and inspire Black men before they face the world.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • The Leadership Pivot: How to transition from leading sales teams to leading your own health journey.
  • Creativity as Medicine: How writing plays like LYRICS keeps the mind sharp even when the body is weak.
  • Your Voice Rises: Why my company’s vision is essential for anyone feeling invisible due to illness.

Living with MS—specifically navigating the daily battles of fatigue and left-side weakness while managing a regimen of Vumerity—requires more than just medication. It requires a complete shift in mindset. I discuss how I refused to let the diagnosis silence me, channeling that energy into my work as a playwright.

"Welcome back. Today’s episode is a little different. Usually, I talk to you about leadership, creativity, and effectiveness. But today, I’m talking about the biggest challenge to my own effectiveness.

In October 2020, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. For a guy from Roosevelt, NY, who spent 30 years in the fast-paced world of Payment Processing, being told your body might not cooperate was a shock. I deal with fatigue and left-side weakness that sometimes makes the simplest tasks feel like billion-dollar negotiations.

But here is what I’ve learned: Structure saves you when strength fails you.

The Personal Battle (How I Combat It) You might look at my frameworks or my career and think I’ve got it all figured out. But let me take you back to 2020. I was sitting in a doctor's office, looking at an MRI of my brain showing 40 lesions.

In that moment, the ultimate 'Imposter' voice spoke up. It said: 'Winston, you are a fifty-plus-year-old man, an immigrant, and now a patient with progressive MS. You are broken. You can't lead. You can't be productive.'

If I had accepted that role as a 'character' in my story, I would have retreated. But I used the concept of Narrative Identity. I realized I wasn't the character; I was the Author. And the Author gets to decide that the diagnosis wasn't the end—it was just a 'line of demarcation'.

I combat Imposter Syndrome by looking at the evidence rather than the emotion. When I feel like a fraud, I open my 'Second Brain'. I look at the logs. I look at the history of what I have Created, Attacked, and Maintained. Facts are the antidote to feelings.

As the director of this incredible play, I sat down with Carol to go behind the curtain. In this summary, you'll see us discuss: The Play's Deep Origins: Carol shares the powerful inspiration for "Passing Shadows," a story rooted in the "Windrush" generation and the complexities of identity. Her Creative Sanctuary: We talk about her unique creative process, which starts in her dreams and is nurtured by working in her garden with "good clean dirt". Resilience and Courage: Carol shares an incredibly powerful life philosophy. At 70, and as a cancer survivor, she's a testament to her own message: "Don't get sad, get mad" and fight for your life and your art. The Power of Theater: We discuss why live theater is a crusade, an experience that changes you the moment you walk in and share that space with the actors and audience. "Hey everyone, it's Winston here, and I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for an amazing year. This year has been a journey filled with incredible experiences and the support of some truly wonderful people.

I'm especially grateful for my men's group from Buckhead Church. These guys are incredible. They recently went above and beyond by delivering meals to a family member in need for two whole weeks. It's a powerful reminder of the impact of community and the importance of supporting each other.

Beyond my church group, I've had the privilege of being part of some amazing organizations this year. The Atlanta Black Theatre Festival and the Atlanta Dramatists have provided incredible opportunities for growth and inspiration. My "Modified by MS" men's group has also been a source of unwavering support and camaraderie.

On a personal note, I've been deeply inspired by Tiago Forte's "PARA" method. It's revolutionized how I approach knowledge management and productivity. In the realm of entertainment, "Arcane" captivated me with its stunning visuals and compelling story, while "Dune: Part Two" delivered breathtaking visuals and a powerful exploration of destiny.

As we move into the new year, I'm filled with hope and excitement for the future. I'm eager to continue learning, growing, and connecting with all of you.

If you're enjoying this podcast, please consider subscribing and sharing it with your friends. Your support means the world to me.

We all have a familiar experience, one we share countless times a day. We stand before a mirror. In my case glance at it when I’m on my way to the you-know-where. Sometimes it's a glance, checking our hair or outfit. Other times, it's a more deliberate moment, taking stock of ourselves. When you look at the mirrors what is one thing you usually notice

But have you ever stopped to think about what a mirror truly reflects? It shows us not just our physical appearance, but also our emotional state, our energy, and perhaps most importantly – our choices. In my case it lets me know I probably shouldn’t have had that desert. The truth is, we constantly reflect on the world around us. i will share with you what I see, what I do , and hopefully what we can all do.

Now, I know for myself, living with MS, those reflections can sometimes be challenging. There are days when symptoms attempt to dim my usual spark. The limitations of the disease can be frustrating. But here's the thing, the mirror doesn't lie, and that's a good thing. It's a constant reminder to prioritize self-care.

My mornings now begin with twenty minutes of gentle exercise. It might not seem like much, but it sets the tone for the day. Just like a mirror reflects the light we shine on it, prioritizing my health allows me to shine brighter for myself and my loved ones.

Speaking of loved ones, spending time with family is a non-negotiable. My Mom turns 88 in a month and my Dad is 83 in a few weeks. Their love and story fuels me. Their laughter, their support – those are the true reflections of a life well-lived. They inspire me to fight, to keep pushing forward, and to use the challenges I face to build a better life, not just for myself, but for them.

The future can feel daunting sometimes, but the mirror offers a powerful tool – perspective. It allows me to see how far I've come, and how much I've overcome. That perspective fuels my hope for the days ahead.

So, take a moment the next time you stand before a mirror. Reflect not just on your appearance, but on your life. Are you prioritizing your well-being? Are you nurturing your relationships? Are you building a future you can be proud of?

Today, I challenge you to use that reflection as a call to action. Make a change, big or small, that will positively impact your life. For those of us living with chronic illness, let's use our challenges as inspiration to live even fuller lives. Let's become reflections of resilience, of strength, and hope.

What do I use to be creative?

I use several things, but the main thing I use is a place to store my ideas.

You've heard me talk about Notion recently, and that is a place where I have an idea, and then I put it in there.

But I also create a roadmap, so if I have an idea for a blog or a podcast, I use a template that says, this is an idea stage, and then I go from there.

The cool thing, for everyone listening, there are multiple ways to do this.

You can do this with a tool like Notion, but you can also use it with other planning tools.

So if you have an iOS device, you can use reminders where you can set it up in a Kanban style, where you have one thing to the left that says, this is something that's in the queue,

I had a chance to take part in my first ever Southeastern Theatre Conference. It was in Lexington Kentucky a city I've never visited. I always get a thrill from going to new places, especially ones in which I've been near but never spent any time. As many places I visited I truly dug the city. It was a cool place that you could walk around pretty quickly. The conference itself felt...like I was amongst my people. I don't say this lightly. I was impressed by many things at the 74th year of the conference.

Toni Simmons Henson is the newly appointed Executive Director and I saw how she navigated which I'm sure behind the scenes was a logistical adventure. It seemed flawless.

The amount of young people and educators that are passionate about the art of Theatre was eye opening. The gleam in their eyes and the care of the educators was evident.

The amount of events, workshops, and productions was a bit overwhelming, In a good way. There is no way a person could see it all.

I'm part of the Leadership Initiative which meant I was exposed to some of the strategies and vision for the future. It was a showcase of the past, present, and future for the organization. The engagement about creating a beautiful future for Theatre was inspiring.

I would be remiss if I didn't share something that was special and surprising. There was a session for Theatre practitioners of Faith. Having a chance to link my love of Theatre with following of Jesus was a moment I'll never forget.

I'm so looking forward to the future of the conference and the art of Theatre.

As part of our celebration of our two year anniversary.     THIS IS A READING OF JET BLACKS PLAY WRITTEN BY WINSTON A. WILSON       I want to thank our first every guests Casey J. Ashley and Ivory Shields for helping us celebrating our podcast's two year anniversary.  They reprise their roles from Jet Blacks night club in a reading of the pivotal scene from the play.  Every time we have an event (live or virtual), there will be a creative blessing.  We hope that you enjoy this snippet and please subscribe to the podcast for all creatives. Jet Blacks was originally written a long time ago as I was feeling emotions coming out of 9/11. As the pandemic began, I wanted to feel some hope as a response to the many emotions I was going through. I begin to reimagine the story with the same characters in a different time. This scene represents the main character coming to grips with the emotional trauma of reuniting with his mother. When i write, I feel something usually and it and this represented that moment. Jet Blacks was written a bit over a decade ago and without a doubt the biggest play I've done, going over a cool two hours. We created Creativity Cocktail as a way for creatives to use their talents to help guide them through emotional trauma. It has been my ultimate pleasure to be associated with the energy to promote and celebrate the creative soul that each one has within. She has been a professor of dramatic writing on the faculty at the Savannah College of Art and Design—the Atlanta campus—specifically, the writing center at historic Ivy Hall. She also taught screenwriting at SCAD’s Digital Media Center. Before that, she taught writing for 14 years at night at the Alliance Theatre. She has taught at KSU and Emory University. YouTube!

The Creativity Cocktail podcast is a forum for artists and creatives all throughout our world to share what they are working on and how they are helping others. Especially those that are going through difficult emotional times. We and I hurt when I hear of someone struggling with personal trauma, drama, or difficulty. It hurts because we are not created for this. Your voice creates. We have a tendency to use our voice to destroy these days. Or we perceive creation as the destruction of others. That is not what we were created for! That is not what we are! If you hear this in my voice, that is because I feel it. We hear stories every day of depression, and illness of all kinds, and there is this rush to put us all in a box. We break our collective boxes! You are beautiful and creative!

Rising Tides Charity's ultimate goal is to raise resources each year to help others achieve a creative, or academic aspiration. We don't discriminate on the basis of age, criminal record, gender, or anything else. There are no constructs between us as humans. Come be a part of our path and we will help you with yours.

The Creativity Cocktail podcast is a forum for artists and creatives all throughout our world to share what they are working on and how they are helping others. Especially those that are going through difficult emotional times. We and I hurt when I hear of someone struggling with a personal trauma, drama, or difficulty.

We believe that we should all unleash our creativity in this life. If you are having drama, trauma, or personal challenge, we ask you to think about your inner creativity and answer the bell!  Release what your spirit has endowed within your being.  Help others find theirs as well.  Our platform gives creative the ability to share!       We live in a wonderful time in human history (These days may challenge this assumption).  Despite this, many of us struggle to project and release our creativity.  In order to understand our life, we create barriers and prisons to what is in our innate nature.  That is the creativity  that breathes within each of our souls.  Our goal is to create environments for creatives that are looking for a community to voice themselves and share a world unaffected by limitations!    https://www.risingtidescharity.org   Ig:@risingtidescharity.org  tw:@risingtidescha1 Thank you Bridget!

We saw they need for us to all get back to one of the most important spiritual foundations. That is the need to use our creativity to overcome any challenge in our world and our lives. We do this through our three pillars of service, spirituality, and experience. We ask you to help us by volunteering at one of our upcoming events and helping us raise resources. These resources help to create powerful environments and help fund the vision of all the creatives in our society.

Service: A laser focus on dedication to everyone in our community.

Spirituality: We know that following the example of faith allows us to make decisions and environments that are bigger than us.

Experience: Everything we do, is to create a moment that has to be witnessed.

Vision: We will help all find, nurture, or expand our creative voice. Mission: We do this by creating powerful content and experiences that allow us to mutually share and raise ourv oices! We use spirituality as our guidepost in all levels of execution.
