It’s been a minute since the last Section 23 release so we thought you deserved a bit of a treat with this one. Presenting the ‘Incidents’ EP, out everywhere on 25th February 2022.
Delving deep into the archives, the legendary Mark XTC brings a previously unreleased DAT to the mix with a mid 90’s jump up slammer. ‘Check Da Switch’ has everything you could possibly want from a wobbly, fun filled Reebok Classic sole burner. It’s mashed up Amen breaks and lead bassline straight from the Joker Records School of low end combines perfectly to take you back in time to the days of Helter Skelter and even Section 23’s very own parties.
Of course we had to include both Max Baker and Erritate in this EP, not only for their individual production styles but also because they are both bloody good at what they do. Max’s infection ‘Incidents’ is already causing a whirlwind on dub and if you know of his previous releases across various labels, you will no doubt love this minimalist two step affair.
Erritate brings two tracks to the party; an early 90’s rave inspired twist up ‘Ten Sixths’ full of wonky stabs and fierce drums plus ‘Be Mine’ which also calls on the good old days with a lovely chunky synth riff and female vocal stabs. Jamie S23 mixes piano keys, sliced and diced breakbeats, some legendary MC samples plus trademark basslines in a nod to ‘92. If you’re lucky enough to play on commercial airwaves, a clean version is also included! ‘That Free Party Last Week’ will have you reaching for your lighter in seconds.

The dynamic duo Oxide & Neutrino played a huge part in the UK garage commercial crossover. This DJ mix is a bit of an anthem bash and some of the mixing is questionable, however, it does feature 'Bring the Lights Down' by Mr. Reds And Kaliber - banger.
Mixed by the legendary Jason Kaye, this single disc was given away free with August 2000's magazine. For those that don't know, Max Power was at the time, one of the best modified car magazines on the shelves and was responsible for many a hot hatch photoshoot!

What it is, however, is a monster of a track following in the footsteps of ‘Strange Seeings’. Rough, rugged and raw and without a doubt one for the MCs to roll through. Drop this anywhere in a DJ set and watch heads virtually fly all over the place.
Slip back in time with ‘Memorex’, a track so full of vibes from the past that you would think it was time to don the white gloves and Nike poppers, that is until the nasty bassline kicks in and it’s a full on smash anything up that's close by type affair. It’s off the mark broken breakbeats twist in and out of rhymes about bad news on the telly, moonwalking on thin ice and watering the grass. Close your eyes and feel the buzz.
‘Strange Seeings’ provides an instant flashback to early events of time tripping. It’s clever use of mid range bass riffs and rumbling low hertz will no doubt tip off a variety of train spotters but what’s important to remember here is that Erritate never complies with rules and guidelines.
A nod to many days hitting up derelict walls, abandoned trains and even the odd roller shutter with a touch of spray paint, the tune we like to call ‘MTN 94’ swaps name tags for extra snares and believe us when we say they are in abundance here. Sod it, have a few extra kicks in the breakbeat too. It’s a crush then down style roller that takes no prisoners and leaves no trace, no dust sheets and certainly no spillage.

An hour of classic Congo Natty tunes, nothing planned, just pulled the tracks as I went. So many big tunes from this label!
Dungeon Kru bring forth a huge slap to the face with their new EP via Liondub International. A 5 track onslaught of original jump up vibes from the 90's that do a bloody good job of representing what's current in 2020 and beyond. With a distinct take on moving things forward, this is certainly one big release to watch out for.
'Pushing' does exactly what it says on the ID tag. Dungeon Kru have taken their own individual influences and created a monster with this one.
The "pushing crack like we invented it" sample is reminiscent of '96 jump up which as you probably know, was heavily based around 80's hip hop vocals.
'Dead Tonight' taken on a different vibe with a ton of ragga infused vibes and FX. The lead bass is without a doubt cranky, wrapping itself around the female lead vocal like a pissed off sound engineer. Stick this one on in a dilapidated wood cabin in the middle of a forest and watch the results unfold. The same could be said for 'Shake Ya Bumpa' to some extent. Another horror movie themed corpse killer which certainly won't clear the dance floor, but will send a shiver down your spine..
'Impossible' works on the basis of experimental techniques, chucking industrial grade production into the mix which in turn, bangs out a weighty selection. One for the speaker box gang.
Finally 'Do It Again' wraps up the EP with explosive impact. This could have well been the flip of 'Pushing' should it have been released on vinyl, either in 2020 or back in time. Heck, this certainly could have been a release in 1996 and it would have sold by the bucket load. That's not to say it sounds old though, far from it.
If now was the time to develop the jump up rolling sound of 2019, this is the EP to represent.
A solid 8/10

A 1 minute beep test designed for a squat hold. The ideal outcome is your clients will hold a 1 minute squat which is released by each jump.
On every beep perform a jump and land back in the squat.
To make the test harder, increase the height of the jump. To decrease the difficulty, either stand briefly on the beep or reduce the height of each jump.

Switch, another offshoot of Joker Records, was created in 1997 by The Dream Team and had a short lifespan with the last track, SWITCH 24, being released between 1999.
Featuring a similar style to that of Jokers other sub label, Da Lick, Switch was heavily aimed at the dancefloor. Bizzy B was responsible for the majority of the labels output under various guises such as Da Lick Crew and The Eliminators (alongside Dean Vincent aka Pugwash). A considerable amount of the earlier releases have no artist listing although it’s highly likely these were also produced by Bizzy B AKA Sub Zero, Mr Freeze, The Penguin etc etc..
Switch and Da Lick were a funny old set up looking back, it certainly puzzles me why both labels coexisted considering the style of output in years 1997 to 1998 was pretty identical. It was only in 1999 that Switch took a u-turn and pushed out more of a tech step approach - not that is really suited the label or fitted with their devoted fan base.
‘Chimes’ which features a well known sample from Clint Eastwood’s 1965 film ‘For a Few More Dollars More’ was probably the labels most memorable release.
It’s a tough call to comment further on any other releases popularity as the label was very much a collectors only affair in my opinion. Switch certainly didn’t stack up in the same popularity stakes as the parent label Joker Records or similar jump up labels such as Urban Takeover or Lowkey.

With a collection of vinyl records that covers pretty much all of the important years of underground dance music I decided to put together a series of history sets.
If you’re new to the drum and bass genre, interested in where the music started or simply a fan of everything hardcore and jungle I hope this either sheds some light to where it all began or jogs your memory to many classic events you may have attended across the United Kingdom.
Part one covers the years 1990 through to 1998 with a mixture of anthems and lesser known titles, each with a brief introduction and the odd bit of history. This isn’t a DJ mix but more of a presentation of something that’s been important to me for a long time.
