  • Madison Hall, a 25-year-old barista and union organizer, says that the 68-year-old billionaire repeatedly bristled at and cut off their questions about Starbucks’ handling of the growing union movement within the company. “If you hate Starbucks so much, why don’t you go somewhere else?” Schultz told Hall, they recalled.
  • ...
  • Hall says that when they mentioned the several federal complaints filed by the NLRB against the company for illegally harassing and firing pro-union workers, a number of other baristas began murmuring, seemingly unaware of the charges. Hall says they tried to explain the NLRB’s actions, but was again cut off by Schultz. A challenge over whether Starbucks offered the best benefits in the retail industry was also interrupted.
  • “Then he went into a long rant about the history of Starbucks and how he used to be poor,” Hall reports. Hall says they pursued the line of questioning, only to encounter more hostility.
  • “I said, ‘You say you’re not anti-union, but on July 1 2021, [Starbucks was] found guilty of retaliation in Philadelphia,’” Hall relays. “That was when he got super-defensive and cut me off, saying ‘We’re not talking about this.’

  • Oh no, The IPCC Report
    • I don't like IPCC report day - by Emily Atkin - HEATED
    • Wanna know a secret about the new IPCC report released yesterday? Most people who say they’ve read it have not actually read it.
    • What they’ve read is the 42-page “Summary for Policymakers”—which, in theory, should be totally fine. The summary document is supposed to be the world’s most comprehensive and authoritative summary of the “current state of the climate, including how it is changing and the role of human influence,” according to the IPCC. There’s really no need for the average person to read a 1,300 page report.
    • But here’s another secret: the term “fossil fuels” is not included in the IPCC’s 42-page summary document, or the IPCC’s press release. So if you only read the summary for policymakers, you won’t actually learn the full role of human influence on the climate. You’ll find out that human “activities” and “influence” are “unequivocally” causing climate disasters—but which activities and influences are the greatest will remain a mystery. You’ll find out what’s happening to the climate, but you won’t find out why it’s happening or who is responsible. It’s all just “Humans,” “emissions,” “activities,” and “influence.”
    • You’ll learn the world is ending, and you will not know who to blame.

  • Stop Putting Actors Like Jared Leto In a Fat Suit - Discourse Blog
    • As a fatmn, yes plz stop
  • It’s messed up! And it’s wrong! Because there are plenty of fat (or just not thin) actors out there that could have been cast for this role, and we didn’t need to see Jared Leto in a goddamn fat suit to accomplish the job. Really, if they wanted to cast a fat person, they could have done that, instead of following the industry standard of casting a thin or straight size person to wear a suit that makes them look only a little bit like a fat person but mostly like a thin person wearing several layers of pillows around their arms and torso, with some bad prosthetic covering their neck and face. But no, the people needed their Leto in a fat suit that badly! I shouldn’t have to point this out, but it’s lazy, it’s insulting, and it often reinforces negative and harmful stereotypes about fat people. It’s especially insufferable that Leto of all people was put in a fat suit at all. Like, not this fucking guy!!

  • Haney questioned why the city decided to design its own bins when it could have used a model from another city. Public Works staff said existing models are sometimes too wide for San Francisco’s narrow sidewalks or have openings so large people can reach into them. But the city will also try out existing trash can models, which will cost between $3,000 to $5,000` per bin, in the pilot to see how they work.

    • In other words, don't worry about the working class. Focus on the professional class.
    • This is a silly analysis—working class folks stand to benefit a lot more from the policies that Bernie supported than the professional class, which is why the media was constantly trying to muddy the watersabout all these policy issues to make them seem infeasible or unrealistic.
    • What we have now is two parties essentially fighting over the same demographic slice of wealthy, privileged voters, while the underprivileged, poor, and underrepresented go completely ignored. Is this a politics you want to support?

  • “It reminds me of Moldova after the fall of the Soviet Union: oligarchs running wild, stashing their gains in buildings,” James Wright, an attorney and former Treasury Department bank examiner, told me. He now helps foreign governments combat money laundering. “Back then, you’d walk down the street, and people would say, ‘That building is a washing machine.’ Everyone knew it. Today, America is not that different.”
  • The Census Bureau reports that nearly 3 million U.S. homes and 13 million apartment units are owned by LLC, LLP, LP or shell companies – levels of anonymous ownership not seen in American history. The proportion of residential rental properties owned by individuals and families has fallen from 92% in 1991 to 74% in 2015.
  • Unmasking the secret landlords buying up America - Reveal

    • Who are these people behind the LLC's? Well, one is Mr. Hawn Shanity
    • With anonymity comes impunity, and, for vulnerable tenants, skyrocketing numbers of evictions. It wasn’t until reporters from The Guardian and The Washington Post began to investigate, for example, that residents living in hundreds of properties across the South learned that they shared a secret landlord, hiding behind names such as SPMK X GA LLC: Fox News personality Sean Hannity.
    • “Among the tenants Hannity’s property managers sought to evict,” The Post reported, were “a double amputee who had lived in an apartment with her daughter for five years but did not pay on time after being hospitalized; and a single mother of three whose $980 rent check was rejected because she could not come up with a $1,050 cleaning fee for a bedbug infestation.”

He didn’t. He simply reiterated that he had put out letters, not his complete health record. He yelled through much of the debate, insisting his Medicare-for-all proposal would not force Nevada’s Culinary Union (which opposes Sanders’s proposal) to give up its health-care plan. He also went full-on socialist, telling Bloomberg he shouldn’t have been allowed to earn his billions.

  • Identity v. Class

    • Fred Hampton on Race & Class
    • You know a lot of people have hang-ups with the Party because the Party talks about a class struggle. And the people that have those hang-ups are opportunists, and cowards, and individualists and everything that's anything but revolutionary. And they use these things as an excuse to justify and to alibi and to bonify their lack of participation in the real revolutionary struggle. So they say, "Well, I can't dig the Panther Party because the Panthers they are engrossed with dealing with oppressor country radicals, or white people, or hunkies, or what have you. They said these are some of the excuses that I use to negate really why I am not in the struggle."We got a lot of answers for those people. First of all, we say primarily that the priority of this struggle is class. ... It was one class--the oppressed--those other class--the oppressor. And it's got to be a universal fact. Those that don't admit to that are those that don't want to get involved in a revolution, because they know that as long as they're dealing with a race thing, they'll never be involved in a revolution. ...

When the Party started to talk about class struggle, we found that we had to start talking about some guns. If we never negated the fact that there was racism in America, but we said that when you, the by-product, what comes off of racism, that capitalism comes first and next is racism. That when they brought slaves over here, it was to take money. So first the idea came that we want to make money, then the slaves came in order to make that money. That means that capitalism had to, through historical fact, racism had to come from capitalism. It had to be capitalism first and racism was a by-product of that.

Anybody that doesn’t admit that is showing through their non-admittance and their non-participation in the struggle that all they are, are people who fail to make a commitment; and the only thing that they have going for them is the education that they receive in these institutions—education enough to teach them some alibis[.] ..

We’re talking about destroying the system, and they have hang-ups doing that because they’re constantly buying property within the system. And it’s kind of hard to burn up on Tuesday what you bought last Monday. Because they’re a bunch of unrepentant capitalists. They’ll never repent. And they know better. We try to make excuses for them—“Maybe they’ll have to go through stages, Fred.”

No, that’s not it. Because they’re much older than we are—I’m 21. We’re all young. So stages, they don went through them. Ron Karenga has more degrees than a thermometer. That’s right, he has more degrees than a thermometer and he continues to do what he’s doin’. And how do they fool you? Because they pick the leaders they want. And they put those people up there and portray them as being your leaders when, in fact, they’re leaders of nobody. + Fred Hampton, "It's A Class Struggle Goddammit!", November, 1969 * Lingua Franca and the Rise of the Resistance Socialite - The Cut + https://www.thecut.com/2020/01/lingua-franca-and-the-rise-of-the-resistance-socialite.html * Patreon Me Daddy + Goodstuff.fm is creating Podcasts - Patreon * We love the petroleum, folks + https://twitter.com/blm_es/status/1221900755436756995

    • Clinton never names Gabbard, but there are only five women running for President -- Gabbard, California Sen. Kamala Harris, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and author Marianne Williamson -- and none of the other woman have been accused of being boosted by Russia.(Hillary Clinton suggests Russians are 'grooming' Tulsi Gabbard for third-party run - CNNPolitics)
    • Actually, she's part of a weird cult
    • When Tulsi talks about her girlhood, it is with a profound vagueness, a visible discomfort. In Iowa, there is awkward silence when I ask about her three brothers (“They’re kind of separate,” her sister eventually says) and silence when I ask about being homeschooled (“The schools in Hawaii weren’t very good,” Davan offers). Tulsi calls herself Hindu, the first Hindu member of Congress, in fact, though the group in which she appears to have grown up does not identify as Hindu. She says she was raised by “an eccentric Catholic father.”In 1970, the Honolulu Advertiser published a piece called “One Man Rules Haiku Krishnaites,” with the subhead “Absolute power of devotees.” In the photo beside the piece, Butler is seated shirtless and smoking, hair skimming his shoulders and a sarong around his waist, staring alluringly into the distance, a mischievous smile on his face. It is the expression of less a guru than a playboy, and this is how Advertiser reporter Janice Wolf depicts him, a handsome dictator with the ability to hypnotize the two dozen 18-to-22-year-olds who live with him in his Quonset hut. One of the girls, an 18-year-old who also happened to have the Sanskrit name Tulsi, says he arranged her marriage to another member of the group. She and another girl, who say they would kill for him, describe his teachings. Among them: “Flowers scream when they’re picked. So do trees when they’re trimmed.” (“Tulsi and Boni were sitting on the lawn chewing blades of grass when they said this,” notes Wolf.)

    • The elite should not—they have no right to—expect sympathy from those who remain excluded from the privileges and benefits of high caste. But ignoring how oppressive meritocracy is for the rich is a mistake. The rich now dominate society not idly but effortfully. The familiar arguments that once defeated aristocratic inequality do not apply to an economic system based on rewarding effort and skill. The relentless work of the hundred-hour-a-week banker inoculates her against charges of unearned advantage. Better, then, to convince the rich that all their work isn’t actually paying off.
    • They may need less convincing than you might think. As the meritocracy trap closes in around elites, the rich themselves are turning against the prevailing system. Plaintive calls for work/life balance ring ever louder. Roughly two-thirds of elite workers say that they would decline a promotion if the new job demanded yet more of their energy. When he was the dean of Stanford Law School, Larry Kramer warned graduates that lawyers at top firms are caught in a seemingly endless cycle: Higher salaries require more billable hours to support them, and longer hours require yet higher salaries to justify them. Whose interests, he lamented, does this system serve? Does anyone really want it?
    • Meritocracy Harms Everyone - The Atlantic
    • Kind of a galaxy-brain take that's laughable at first, but there's a good nugget here, I think
    • Part of what drives inequality and greed is an intuitive understanding that this economy is built on a zero-sum premise
    • The rich understand the risks that come with reduced wealth or social status, and they feel disempowered from confronting it because they're only an individual
    • Most rich people are paupers in comparison with the true elites, so they don't really see themselves as the ones with power
    • Pals, being rich sucks and it doesn't fulfill you---the constant fear of losing it all or being caught or getting murked by karma are not great headspaces
    • What if there was another way? What if you didn't have to view everybody below you as your enemy? What if we all decided to have solidarity against the exhausting and stupid culture we've created?
    • Maybe if we exercise empathy and show solidarity to those better-off, but still suffering under this oppressive system, we can get more done
    • Where do we set the boundary, though, as far as income goes? Appealing to billionaires seems a waste, but what about families bringing in 250k? How do we define who's worth the solidarity and who de-facto has to be an enemy?

Shrimp-tastrophy

Starting in the early 1960s, California and Nevada’s departments of Fish and Game (now the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Nevada Department of Wildlife) released mysis shrimp into Lake Tahoe in hopes that they would be a new and abundant food source for the lake’s fish.“The idea was, if you introduce something that fish could eat, fish would get bigger and fishermen would be happier,” said Tahoe Environmental Research Center Director Geoff Schladow. “So what could possibly go wrong with that?”

A lot, it turns out.

“This is something everybody may have missed,” Schladow said. “I think for a long time.” ...

Before the shrimp were introduced into Tahoe, zooplankton in the lake ate algae and sediment, clearing the water by doing so. Some fish also ate the zooplankton. Then the states introduced the shrimp, and everything changed. The shrimp hate light, and because Lake Tahoe is so clear, they have to retreat to the depths of the lake during the day to avoid it. Then, each night, they undertake a round-trip migration as long as 2,000 feet to the top of the water to feed. Once the sun rises again, they swim back down.

While officials put the shrimp in the lake in the hopes of fish eating them, that hasn’t been the case because of this nightly vertical migration. ...

Not only did the shrimp not fulfill their intended role, but they also brought a devastating and unintended consequence.

After the shrimp migrate each night, they’re starving from the long journey. Because of this, they’ve managed to decimate their main food source in Lake Tahoe: native zooplankton.

These zooplankton were an important food source for the kokanee, and the size of those fish in Lake Tahoe has dropped dramatically since the shrimp were introduced. But these tiny creatures that the shrimp were devouring, called Daphnia, were also keeping the lake clean, researchers found out.

“As far as zooplankton in Lake Tahoe go, Daphnia is responsible for removing about 85% of the particles and algae from the water column,” said Katie Senft, one of the researchers on Allen’s team.

Weird Way to do Public Housing, But Okay

  • San Mateo cops have been sleeping in their cars to avoid an hours-long commute at the end of a 12-hour shift. The city plans to convert a portion of an old fire station into a sleeping barracks for far-flung officers who can’t afford the extremely expensive housing in the area.

For San Mateo police Officer Jeff Brinton, the 85-mile commute from Oakley was so punishing that he decided to pursue the only reasonably affordable solution he could think of: He now sleeps in a van.Rather than slog back and forth from eastern Contra Costa County between shifts — a trip that can take 2½ hours during rush hour — he crashes in his Roadtrek van, which he parks in the employee lot at the San Mateo police headquarters.

Brinton said he is hardly the only member of the force who slumbers in a vehicle rather than drive several hours after a 12-hour workday.

“A lot of (officers) are sleeping in their cars if they get too tired — it’s dangerous to drive home,” said Brinton.

But Brinton may soon get some relief from his commuting nightmare. On Monday, the San Mateo City Council unanimously approved a plan to convert a portion of an old fire station into a sleeping barracks for far-flung officers who can’t afford the average $1.4 million Peninsula home.

The $520,000 project will provide bunks and showers for up to 12 officers at a time at Fire Station 26 at 1812 S. Norfolk St. In addition to the barracks, the building will be a police substation and vehicle storage site.

While Brinton’s commute may be particularly egregious, it’s not that unusual. Of San Mateo’s 125 officers, 68% live outside of San Mateo County, many as far as Tracy or Mountain House in San Joaquin County or Gilroy in south Santa Clara County.

Grosperity Pospel

Like payday lenders, prosperity gospel ministers see the broke and struggling as a consumer market. Their target demographic is those who suffer from lack, and their product is the promise of abundance, or at least relief. Financially, the prosperity gospel is nothing but a swindle, prying money from people who by definition have very little and desperately wish they had more.Ideologically, the prosperity gospel dovetails perfectly with right-wing ideology, which views poverty as a consequence of individual failure rather than rigged economic and political structures. ... When times are hard, it’s because you didn’t think positively enough, pray hard enough, or tithe enough. It’s a spiritual spin on meritocracy, the ideological handmaiden to neoliberal capitalism. The prosperity gospel is one of America’s greatest grifts.

(A Grift from God - Jacobin)Trump IS a prosperity gospel preacher:

Trump’s spiritual adviser is a prosperity minister. Her name is Paula White. In April of this year, she promised believers that if they sent her money they would receive one of several blessings: God would bring harm to their enemies, assign them a special angel, enhance their prosperity, or increase their inheritance. ...

In the relationship between Paula White and Donald Trump, the nature of the prosperity gospel is laid bare. White got famous telling working-class people that their economic insecurity was a personal failing, and in a way, so did Trump. The Apprentice is a show about people dreaming of riches, desperate to prove themselves worthy of success. Most are not, and are punished for their weakness with unemployment. What’s obscured in both instances is that people are poor because people like White and Trump are rich — that they are each beneficiaries of a system that takes from the needy and gives to themselves.

Plastic

The oil and gas industry is ramping up petrochemicals — building blocks of plastics —right as the global outcry intensifies over plastic waste. ... Domestic demand for ethane has grown rapidly. The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects it will reach 1.7 million barrels per day by year’s end, an 83% increase over 2012. ... Exports of ethane have grown from nothing in 2013 to more than 250,000 barrels a day. EIA projects these exports to increase by another 50% this year. ... Petrochemicals, which accounted for half of the growth in global oil demand last year, are projected to rise to 70% share of growth by 2040, according to BP.Oil companies double down on plastics as public outcry grows - AXIOSCalifornians generated about 77.2 million tons of waste in 2017, according to the most recent calculations from CalRecycle, California’s Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery. Of that, about 44.4 million tons ended up in landfills in 2017. CalRecycle estimates that the other 32.8 million tons, about 42 percent, was sent to recycling or composting, or was just never tossed in the first place. The numbers are a problem because they mean the state is far from reaching a statewide goal to reduce, recycle, or compost 75 percent of waste by the year 2020. And the outlook isn’t good. That’s in part because cheap natural gas is spurring investments in manufacturing of virgin plastics, which a CalRecycle report said could “undermine source reduction efforts, undercut prices for recovered plastics, and exacerbate plastic litter and marine pollution issues.”

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan declared ice cream a “nutritious and wholesome food” to help the dairy industry, since he was already trying to find a way to get rid of a surplus of 500 million pounds of cheese. • As if failing to try is not equally or more discouraging and disillusioning
      • Voters want representatives that fight for them
      • The incentive is a fear of losing power when it should be a fear of wasting power.
      • The policy is secondary to the movement behind it.
      • There's just always this underlying but unspoken assumption that the status-quo is tolerable while we wait. And it's curiously always coming from people for whom the status quo is, like, not killing them and their family.

US Women's National Soccer

  • The U.S. women’s national team is an American treasure. Pay them a bounty. - Washington Post
  • Just imagine how that record-setting 13-0 victory over Thailand will play at a jury trial. It’s going to be a lot of fun watching lawyers for the soccer federation try to justify why the U.S. women’s national team, with their air rifles for legs, are paid 38 cents on the dollar compared to their male counterparts and had to sue for fair wages. It’s going to be pure entertainment listening to federation president Carlos Cordeiro stammer out an explanation on the witness stand of why this team, which is nothing short of an American damn treasure, isn’t worth equal coin to a men’s squad that can’t beat Jamaica.
  • You think Nike committed $120 million to USA soccer back in 1997 because of a men’s team that finished 10th in the Atlanta Olympics with a 1-1-1 record? • Every dime of largesse that the American soccer federation now enjoys can, in some way, be traced to the apple-seeding done by the women’s team.

Live Laugh Love, or: the banal nature of commoditized decor/Pinterest culture

  • Live. Laugh. Love. Why? - The Outline
  • Following the 2007 recession, DIY decoration became increasingly enticing, propelled in part by the growing number of affordable home supply and home furnishing options. Millions lost their jobs and could no longer afford to spend big on extraneous home goods; stores became more conservative with stocking inventory. A “word art” trend — inclusive of prints, posters, and cutesy signs with textural platitudes, phrases, and sometimes just single adjectives or verbs (“blessed,” “dream”) — resulted in décor that was both cost-friendly and attainable. Consumers got inventive; word art, in particular, combined individual tastes with easily marketable inspirational catchphrases.

Confederate flags are just “live laugh love” signs for white trash dudes@Aimee_B_Loved, 10 Jun 2019 Thought Technology: Maybe They're just Poor

  • Alternatively, "Maybe they're just suffering a mental health crisis"
  • The idea is to stop when you see a meme which is based on mocking a person (maybe for their style or weird behavior) and ask yourself: is this really about them being a bad person, or could this simply be the result of them being in a very bad spot?
  • Rutger Bregman: ‘Poverty is not a personality defect. We need a basic income’ - The Big Issue
  • There is an entrenched idea on the right and left that poverty is just a personality defect. As Margaret Thatcher once put it – a lack of character. And what I am trying to prove with this book is that it’s actually just about a lack of money. There is an extraordinary amount of research to back this up. The left usually says, “We’ve got to help these people – we’ve got to give them the right advice.” While the right say, “No, we simply have to teach them some responsibility.”
  • The assumption there is the same – they both assume that there is something wrong with the poor themselves. There is now some really exciting new evidence that shows poverty is really just about the context. Yes, it’s true that if you’re poor you are more likely to make poor decisions – you smoke more, drink more, raise your kids worse, take out more loans you can’t afford. But the evidence shows that we would all make the same decisions if we were living without money. If you lift people out of poverty then they start making much smarter decisions.
  • The Cost of Financial Precarity
  • We consistently find that financial precarity undermines people’s ability to perform across a variety of tasks and contexts. When people are worried about their personal finances, it hinders their ability to be productive and perform. ...
  • What is to blame for the status quo, in which workers experience persistent worry about paying the bills? ... The underlying assumption is that if people only knew better, they would not be so prone to financial precarity. ...
  • The assumption that deficiencies in individual prudence are the primary driver of financial precarity negates the unique economic context of the United States. ... In the United States, the design of the social system depends largely upon employers’ discretion to provide critical social safety nets such as health insurance and retirement savings, as well as other welfare-enhancing benefits such as paid sick days and parental leave.
  • No Money More Problems: The Relationship Between Poverty & Black Mental Health - Ourselves Black
  • It is obvious that poverty limits access to mental healthcare, but what is overlooked is that all too often poverty creates the need for that care in the first place. Mental illness, like many health problems, typically strikes when biological vulnerability is coupled with exposure to a stressor. Poverty, simply defined, is when a household has insufficient resources to reliably meet its basic needs. This constant threat to one’s very survival most certainly qualifies. Poverty in and of itself is traumatic, especially during periods of brain and identity development. It also creates vulnerability to additional traumas – both inside and outside of the home. For example, families with limited resources can get stuck in neighborhoods with high rates of community violence and disproportionate contact with the criminal justice and foster care systems. Additionally, financially dependent poor women and their children are especially vulnerable to perpetrators of domestic violence and child abuse. Staying means ongoing abuse. Leaving means risk of hunger and/or homelessness.

When poverty creates the need for mental health care and then limits access to it, untreated mental illness shapes lives. ... Poverty threatens mental well-being and as such, black people are exceptionally threatened. Per the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2016 22 percent of black people and 30 percent of black children lived below the poverty line. * Why Is It Still OK To 'Trash' Poor White People? - NPR * Like other slurs, there has been some reclamation of "white trash" — songs and cookbooks and T-shirts that celebrate white-trash culture. And plenty of people unabashedly refer to themselves as white trash. * But no matter who uses it, the phrase itself reinforces some pretty insidious ideas about the meaning of whiteness (and, by reflection, blackness — we'll get to that in a minute). By accepting the idea that white trash exists, people are tacitly accepting that there is another, different kind of whiteness. Normal white people — the ones who aren't white trash — embody all the things white trash can't: They're hardworking, educated, classy, kind and good. * Anyone who doesn't conform to those values can't ever really be fully white. Hence, white trash. * Growing Up in Poverty Doubles Risk of Psychosis Disorder Later - Futurity * Researchers, who followed nearly 4,000 families for more than three decades, say the results suggest that intervention through social policies and investment in neighborhood improvements, as well as identifying those most in need of help by observing certain child behaviors, could prevent future debilitating illnesses and the societal and personal costs associated with them. * “One important message to take from this study is that the stresses and chronic day-to-day challenges of living in under-resourced or impoverished communities can undermine the well-being of individuals whether they seem to have a vulnerability or not,” says lead author Paul D. Hastings, professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis. * Why don't they pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, HUH?** * Q:// Who benefits from this culture? * Q:// How do we oppose it? + Empathy? + Solidarity? + Pointing the attacks in the right direction?
