Karen has garnered recognition as the Keynote Speaker and Presenter at both national and local professional conferences, including, most recently, the Association for Constructivist Teaching Conference and the Progressive Education Network. She also oversees the operation of a new initiative, the Individualized Education Services program. Jamal was a contestant on the 39th season of Survivor: Island of the Idols. When he’s not running around on a Fijian Island, he is the Admission Product Area Consultant for a database software company called Veracross. Before that, he worked as an admission professional at 2 independent high schools in Providence, RI, and Lawrenceville, NJ. After graduating from Brown University in 2007, he worked for the Prep for Prep program as a post-placement counselor in New York City. Education, diversity and equity work have been life-long passions of his, so weaving constructive conversations about identity and social justice into his everyday life and on deserted islands while playing Survivor just comes naturally to him. After the show, he hopes to find many more platforms to encourage these discussions and improve our collective fluency regarding these issues.

This week I spoke with Ted Dintersmith.

Ted Dintersmith is one of America's leaders in innovation, entrepreneurship, and education.

Ted's professional experience includes two decades in venture capital, including being ranked by Business 2.0 as the top-performing U.S. venture capitalist for 1995-1999. He served on the Board of the National Venture Capital Association, chairing its Public Policy Committee. From 1981 to 1987, he ran a business at Analog Devices that helped enable the digital revolution. In the public sector, he was a staff analyst in 1976-78 for the U.S. House of Representatives, and was appointed in 2012 by President Obama to represent the U.S. at the United Nations General Assembly. Ted earned a Ph.D. in Engineering from Stanford University and a B.A. from the College of William and Mary, with High Honors in Physics and English.

Ted has become one of America's leading advocates for education policies that foster creativity, innovation, motivation, and purpose. He knows what skills are valuable in a world of innovation, and how we can transform our schools to prepare kids for their futures. His contributions span film, books, philanthropy, and the hard work of going all across America. He's funded and executive produced acclaimed education documentaries, including Most Likely To Succeed, (Sundance, AFI, and Tribeca). With co-author Tony Wagner, he wrote Most Likely To Succeed: Preparing Our Kids for the Innovation Era. During the 2015/16 school year, he went to all fifty U.S. states, meeting with governors, legislators, educators, parents, and students, and encouraging communities to work collectively to re-imagine school and its purpose. Learn more about his work from his website or by following him on Twitter at www.twitter.com/dintersmith.

Ted speaks frequently at major events and conferences, delivering a vision of what our schools could - and need to - be. Drawing on inspiring examples garnered during his fifty-state tour, he can articulate the conditions required to let our students, teachers, and schools race forward. Recent keynotes include state superintendent meetings in Virginia and North Dakota, the annual meeting of the Coalition for Access (several hundred top college admissions officers), the annual Jobs for America's Graduates conference, and a plenary session of the Finnish parliament. In addition to his keynotes, Ted is often asked to also screen his film and lead a post-film discussion.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Ted Fujimoto.

Ted Fujimoto is an entrepreneur and expert in leadership development and organizational redesign. At age 18, Ted founded his first company that designed and implemented logistics, customer relationship management and financial systems for large company clients. At the time in 1992, his biggest challenge was finding qualified people to hire to help grow the company thus igniting the co-development and co-creation of Napa New Technology High School, which opened in 1996. The school conducted all learning through project-based learning, modeled after the project management protocols used by his company combined with a focus on creating a culture and team agreement of trust, respect and responsibility. Shortly thereafter, he sold his first company and became an equity partner in a consulting firm that had a 35+ year track record of redesigning the customer retail network experience for eleven automotive and hospitality brands worldwide. The magic in the firm’s methodology was how organizations can systematically create, replicate and sustain a completely different culture by changing the mindset of team members and changing the motivational drivers from extrinsic to intrinsic. This experience helped him provide guidance for the launch and expansion of the organization that evolved into the New Tech Network and the growth of Big Picture Learning that currently have over 400 schools using their whole-school designs between them. Ted then oversaw the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Carnegie Foundation grants for a Sacramento region education and workforce development intermediary organization working to redesign schools and later advised and helped design programs for over a dozen state charter school associations to provide better support to improve charter school quality. For the past 12 years, Ted Fujimoto has been president of Landmark Consulting Group that helps clients redesign their organization and scale innovations, and develop strategic alliances. The firm works with and at times holds equity in game changing clients that span across education, entertainment, music, technology and real estate. He serves on the board of the California Credit Union, a $3 billion credit union which recently completed the largest merger of equals in credit union history. Ted is the co-founder and co-chair of the Right to Succeed Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming at least 6,000 public schools into “American Dream Schools” within the next 10 years using replicable deeper learning whole-school designs like New Tech Network and Big Picture Learning.
