The Makin Wellness Podcast is dedicated to mental health and helping you heal and be happy again. Hosted by Sara Makin, Founder & CEO of Makin Wellness, each episode brings you insight and conversations on critical aspects of mental health from professionals, entrepreneurs, athletes, and more.
Undoubtedly, at one point in your life, you've found yourself in the middle of a situation where lack of communication caused undue stress. Whether the communication gaps came from your side of the table, from others you were interacting with, or from everyone involved collectively, one thing was clear: poor communication led to insufficient outcomes.
Effective communication is a powerful tool that can shape relationships and inspire positive change. It empowers individuals to express their thoughts, emotions, and ideas with clarity and precision, which leads to more concise understanding and increased strength in our connections.
But equally as strong, ineffective communication can lead to comments being taken out of context, relationships ending, and irreparable divisiveness.
We live in a world where texting, emailing, and social media have replaced having physical conversations in many cases - a societal shift that can damage relationships and lead to serious mental harm if the real meanings of those exchanges are misconstrued.
In the Season 3 finale of Stuff My Therapist Says, Sara welcomes our podcast's Executive Producer, Jason Cercone, back to the studio for a candid chat about the impact of communication...and the lack thereof.
In this episode, you'll learn:
ABOUT JASON: Jason Cercone is a podcast consultant, producer, and host with nearly a decade's worth of experience in the podcast arena. He helps business leaders and results-driven professionals simplify podcasting and bring purpose, clarity, and impact to their audio endeavors. He launched The Solo Podcaster's Mastermind to help coaches, consultants, and leaders improve their solo podcasting skills while elevating their brands at the same time. Have you ever stopped to consider the type of role mental health plays in a workplace environment? With all we know about emotional well-being and a person's mental state on their productivity, it's amazing that positive mental health hasn't received much attention until today.
And, in the case of some companies, it's still overlooked or undervalued.
Prioritizing mental health in the workplace can lead to reduced stress levels, positive morale, and increased job satisfaction...which can, in turn, lead to better employee retention. Companies that have placed more emphasis on mental health for their employees by providing access to counseling services, promoting work-life balance, and creating a culture of open communication have seen significant improvements within their company culture, thus opening up new opportunities for growth and success.
In Season 3 Episode 6 of Stuff My Therapist Says, Sara Makin is once again joined by Makin Wellness Master's Level Clinical Intern Meera Vasishtha for an in-depth look at mental health and the workplace. Throughout this conversation, you'll discover:
ABOUT MEERA: My name is Meera Vasishtha and I am a Master’s Level Clinical Intern at Makin Wellness. I’m currently studying mental health counseling at the University of Pennsylvania. After attending New York University for undergrad, where I majored in communications, I spent most of my professional career in marketing and technology. I worked at Estee Lauder, Coty, and now at Amazon, in their Audible division.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has taken the world by storm. These days, it's nearly impossible to go online and not find an advertisement or someone talking about the benefits (or detriments, depending on who you listen to) of AI software.
But how does AI and other evolving technologies impact the mental health world? Can it help a clinician with their efforts? Can it provide early detection (and even diagnosis) of mental health conditions by analyzing patterns in data such as speech, text, or facial impressions? Can it serve as a substitute for mental health treatment?
As we move forward, AI will continue to get smarter and more intuitive and it's up to us to understand how this technology can aid our plight and, more importantly, how to use it responsibly.
In Season 4 Episode 5 of Stuff My Therapist Says, Sara Makin is joined by Makin Wellness Master's Level Clinical Intern Meera Vasishtha for a chat about AI, ChatGPT, and other technologies that are changing the mental health world for the better. In this discussion, you'll discover:
ABOUT MEERA: My name is Meera Vasishtha and I am a Master’s Level Clinical Intern at Makin Wellness. I’m currently studying mental health counseling at the University of Pennsylvania. Gaslighting is a manipulation tactic used to make someone question their own thoughts, feelings, and reality. It involves distorting the truth, denying facts, and undermining the victim's perception of events.
In terms of emotional manipulation, a gaslighter seeks to gain power and control over their victim. They may employ techniques such as belittling, criticizing, and insulting the victim, a systematic process that can gradually erode self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall mental health.
Gaslighters also have a tendency to distort reality. They may deny previous conversations, change the meaning of past events, or fabricate false information, thus leading the victim to question their own memory and perception.
In the Season 3 premiere of Stuff My Therapist Says, host Sara Makin and special guest Carolyn Weimer, a Licensed Professional Counselor at Makin Wellness, take a deep look at the harmful form of psychological abuse known as gaslighting. Together, Sara and Carolyn will discuss:

Being authentic in everything you do is the best way to proceed through life. If you try to fake things, put on a facade, carbon copy exactly what others are doing, you put distance between yourself and who you really are.
It may seem like a better choice to project a false image to the world in hopes of attracting new clients, new relationships, and new opportunities. But in the long run, it takes MUCH more effort to keep that act running strong and, as relationships evolve, your lack of authenticity will inevitably be exposed.
In the Season 2 Episode 9 of Stuff My Therapist Says, Sara Makin is joined by brand architect, podcast strategist, and Stuff My Therapist Says Executive Producer Jason Cercone for an in-depth look at the impact authenticity, or LACK of authenticity, can have on you and your mental health. This conversation dives deep into being authentic in your personal relationships, as well as in a professional setting to ensure you're always putting your authentic self front and center.
ABOUT JASON: Jason Cercone is a podcast guesting strategist with nearly a decade's worth of experience in the podcast arena. As we've discussed on The Makin Wellness Podcast on past episodes, social media plays a big role in our lives on a daily basis. As a society, we have become very reliant on these platforms for news, information, and connection to friends, family, and colleagues. In many ways, social media has helped change the world for the better. But, also in many ways, social media has played a negative role, most glaringly in the areas of depression, insomnia, and suicide.
It is up to each individual user to consume content on these networks responsibly and learn to filter out the negativity that can lead to breakdowns in overall mental health and wellness. Fortunately, there are entrepreneurs making strides to bring these behaviors to light and offer more positive platforms to inhabit.
Today, I'm joined by one of those entrepreneurs. Michael Marra is the Founder of Entre, a new social media platform that emphasizes connection, networking, and impacting users in a way that stimulates their mental health for the better. In Episode 17 of The Makin Wellness Podcast, I am joined by award-winning author Mark Wolynn for an in-depth conversation on inherited family trauma. Mark share stories of his past battles with these traumas and breaks down insights found in his book, It Didn't Start With You, covering the same subject.
What is Inherited Family Trauma? This definition is direct from Mark's website:
When a trauma happens, it changes us—sometimes for generations. The grief, the suffering, the distress doesn’t always end with us. The feelings and sensations—specifically the stress response, the way our genes express—can pass forward to our children and grandchildren, affecting them in a similar way, even though they didn’t personally experience our trauma. Simply put, many of us relive the tragedies from previous generations and rarely make the link.If you want to know more on this subject, Mark is the resource you need to follow. Visit his website, follow him on Instagram, and pick up a copy of It Didn't Start With You today.

For years, the therapy setting has had this intimidating, almost uncomfortable image. Bookshelves piled to the rafters with a library's worth of daunting information and diagnoses. Diplomas and certifications adorning the walls. Therapists decked out in tweed jackets with elbow patches. Patients laying on couches...in some cases, not even looking in the eyes of the person giving them direction and advice.
Thankfully, we've grown well beyond this stigma and advancements in mental health and therapy have allowed us take the focus off the false characterizations this profession once had and, instead, put that focus on you, the patient. This allows us to provide better treatment and forge more positive, meaningful relationships with every person we touch.
Makin Wellness has been at the forefront of pioneering online therapy since our inception. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the world to find new ways to receive the care they needed, we were meeting with individuals determined to improve their mental health in a warm, welcoming online environment. It is the foundation on which our practices are built and our team of online therapists take great pride in continuing to propel online therapy forward.
Today, I am joined by one of our great Makin Wellness therapists, Jonathan Tomlin. Jonathan found his calling for therapy at an early age and never looked back. He is a proponent of positive psychology, believes strongly in the healing powers of proper breathing exercises, and is a champion for online therapy and how this setting offers a less threatening approach for you to address your mental health and become better again.
Jonathan and I discuss:

The world has been changing at a rapid pace. In addition to the stigmas behind mental health slowly being knocked down, the understanding of the positive affects CBD and medical marijuana can have on mental health and overall well-being are reaching new levels of prevalence in today's society.
CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is the second most prevalent of the active ingredients of cannabis, or marijuana. While CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana, it is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana plant.
In Episode 15 of The Makin Wellness Podcast, I am pleased to be joined by Russ Cersosimo, Founder of Hemp Synergistics and the author of Molecular Influence: Successfully Hack The Minds of Potential Investors, Customers, Partners & More, for a thought-provoking conversation on how CBD and medical marijuana literally changes lives, how to be positive influence in your space, and much more.

Social media has become a staple in our everyday lives. Ask anyone you run into and chances are excellent they just recently spent some time on one of the many social media networks at their disposal. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok...these and many other platforms consume hours of our time and, if overused, can lead to damaging outcomes.
Have you stopped to consider the role social media plays in your relationships? Or, in your overall mental health? Overuse of social media has been linked to depression, suicide in teenagers, and many other critical mental ailments that have been proven to impact your well-being.
This episode of The Makin Wellness Podcast takes a closer look at the effects social media has on our relationships, as well as our mental health as a whole. Helping me explore this critically important topic in more detail is Kristy Weidner, Co-Owner of The Village Center For Holistic Therapy in Pittsburgh.
Kristy is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, as well as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, Yoga Instructor, and Mindfulness Meditation Teacher. Her viewpoints on this and the full scope of mental health offer unparalleled value to the show. This is an installment of the podcast you don't want to miss.

As we move through 2021 and come off one of the hardest years any of us will ever face due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attention to our overall mental health and wellness could not be more prevalent. Each of us has had to deal with our own set of challenges as we navigated our way through 2020 and there is no denying the strain those challenges can have - mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.
For centuries, seeking mental health labeled you as "mentally ill." But fortunately, this stigma is beginning to break and it's our mission at Makin Wellness to eliminate it for good by bringing positive mental health awareness to the forefront for all that we serve and in all that we do.
In Episode 13 of The Makin Wellness Podcast, I am pleased to welcome fellow Makin Wellness therapist Kelsey George onto the show. Together, Kelsey and I discuss how the stigma behind mental health is slowly starting to crumble and why, now more than ever, you need to be cognizant of your emotions and not feel ashamed or embarrassed to seek professional help in coping with them if you choose.

Insomnia is a very common ailment that impacts millions of people worldwide (more than 3 million cases reported in the United States each year).
Insomnia is defined as a condition that leads to persistent problems falling and staying asleep. Most cases of insomnia are related to poor sleep habits, depression, anxiety, lack of exercise, chronic illness, or certain medications. Symptoms may include difficulty falling or staying asleep and not feeling well-rested.
Treatment for insomnia consists of improving sleep habits, behavior therapy, and identifying and treating underlying causes. Sleeping pills may also be used, but should be monitored for side effects.
In Episode 10 of The Makin Wellness Podcast, I am pleased to welcome Jason Cercone, our Executive Producer for the podcast, onto the show to share his recent experiences with insomnia. As you'll discover, Jason's issues stemmed from working late and being glued to a computer screen (plus his website crashing and years of work being lost in the process), thus impacting his ability to "shut down" and fall asleep when his head hit the pillow. Fortunately, he was able to change some habits that allowed him to return to a more reasonable sleep schedule.

There are many ways that leaders lead. Undoubtedly, you've encountered many leadership styles in all aspects of your life - work, school, and mentorship...just to name a few. Some lead in a passive nature, some are hands-on. Others "rule with an iron fist" while others listen to everyone around them, channel the great ideas, and execute.
In today's conversation on The Makin Wellness Podcast, we are going to talk about what it means to lead with empathy and with excellence.
On Episode 8, I am pleased to welcome Julius Boatwright, the Founding CEO of Steel Smiling in Pittsburgh, PA. While completing the programmatic experience, cohort members receive the following: weekly workforce stipends, emergency financial assistance, mental health training, behavioral health treatment, and social service support.
Our conversation covers many aspects of mental health and wellness experiences, how Julius has worked with his team and his patients through the COVID-19 pandemic, how leaders need to prioritize tasks in their day to stay efficient and effective, why everyone needs to take initiative to bring positive change to their world, and much more.

Welcome to the world premiere installment of The Makin Wellness Podcast!
In my inaugural episode, I am joined by former Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Freddie Mitchell. This was a great way to kick off the podcast as you get to hear Freddie's perspective on life after football, how he's dealt with change throughout his life, and how he focuses on his mental health and positivity each and every day.
Freddie played professional football in the NFL for five seasons with the Eagles and another year with the Chiefs and, undoubtedly, those years physically and mentally took their toll. But what most people don't realize, as Freddie shares with us, is he's been playing football since the age of 5. That's over two decades of physical abuse, dealing with losses and shortcomings alongside triumphs and accomplishments, and proceeding through life with a certain structure. As it all ends, you'll hear how Freddie coped with the adjustments life thrust upon him.
This interview also features tips and strategies for keeping positive thoughts front and center and why focusing on your mental health on a daily basis will blaze a trail towards long-term happiness and clarity in your life. Enjoy the show!
