A new dad joked that parenting has been “pretty easy,” and the comedian clapped back—calling him a scumbag for leaving the mom at home. The internet celebrated it as a powerful “callout.”
But was it really accountability?
In this episode of Restorative Justice Breakdown, I sit down with Kori (the dad and owner of https://hiveclimbing.com/winnipeg/ in the viral clip) and Kerri (his wife, and a feminist reproductive health professional) to explore:
- What actually happened at the comedy show (beyond the clip)
- The pressures dads face to either perform or disappear
- The real (invisible) labor of early parenting and recovery
- Why people projected rage onto Corey and called it “justice”
- How we confuse venting with accountability, and symbolism with real people
Kerri shares her experience as a new mom, what their parenting dynamic actually looks like, and how context, privilege, and nuance matter when we talk about partnership and caregiving. Kori opens up about how it felt to be publicly roasted and misrepresented online, despite being an engaged and supportive father.
This isn’t about canceling the comedian. It’s about examining how we project our pain, turn strangers into symbols, and mistake viral content for justice.

My friend and mentor Shedrick Sanders passed a way last weekend.
To honor his memory we're revisiting our conversation from Fall 2020 detailing his journey from standing up to bullies as a young boy to becoming an esteemed peacemaker and problem solver. He shared his transformative experiences ranging from teaching math in Ghana to facilitating peace circles in Chicago. Shedrick's incredible knack for conflict resolution and mediation is unearthed through his thrilling anecdotes from his time in the Peace Corps and the Dispute Settlement Center. His unique approach of intertwining play, joy, and relationship building with conflict resolution is something that has had a lasting impact.

Ashley Shanice Ellis, a black, queer woman from the West side of Chicago shares her enlightening journey of self-discovery. She takes us on an emotional rollercoaster as she navigates her transition onto an online platform, facing fears and self-doubt, and yet, with determination and courage, she finds her way back into the work she's passionate about.
Ashley recounts an inspiring story of how a moment of affirmation from a stranger sparked a flame within her, shaping her career trajectory and personal identity. Her work in introducing restorative justice and peacemaking circles to probationers in Chicago broke down walls, and built trust and relationships. But as she moved to New York City with no family or friends, Ashley was faced with the daunting task of building a community from scratch. Hear about her fearless journey into vulnerability, trust, and community building in a new city.
In the final part of our discussion, Ashley explores her impactful work with youth in the juvenile justice system, underlining the importance of creating a safe space and a sense of community for them. She shares her vision of reimagining Breed Circles for her sisters, her upcoming projects, and the importance of rest in her work. How can we navigate the complexities of Transformative Justice (TJ) while addressing the intersectionality of our identities? Join us for a powerful conversation with our guest, Mia, a queer disabled woman of color, a Korean adoptee, and a TJ and Disability Justice practitioner. In this episode, we dive into Mia's work, her passion for composting and vermicomposting as a way to care for the planet, and how she uses humor to bridge communities.
Together, we explore the concept of pods, the people you would call upon if you were experiencing harm or violence, and the power of small actions, like asking for feedback, to create a culture of accountability. Joe has been the victim of two separate violent anti-gay hate crimes and what began as a personal healing response to the trauma, he has transformed into professional involvement in the field of community and restorative justice. Since 2010, Joe has actively helped schools implement peer mediation programs and school-wide restorative practices. As a private consultant beginning in 2015, Joe has designed a trauma-informed approach of restorative practices and infused this model in schools.
What if we told you that implementing trauma-informed and restorative justice practices in schools could transform the lives of students, educators, and entire communities? How can restorative justice initiatives support the LGBTQ+ community? In this powerful conversation, I had the honor of speaking with Rami El-Hirib, a restorative justice practitioner and founder of the Restorative Rainbow Alliance. Rami, a Lebanese gay man who experienced a society that criminalizes homosexuality, shares his inspiring journey to the United States and how he developed a restorative mindset to address the harms within his community.
Rami's passion for conflict resolution led him to create the Restorative Rainbow Alliance, which focuses on providing safe spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals and representation for their needs. Together, we explored the importance of having an LGBTQ+ lens when approaching restorative justice work and how the Alliance is developing a facilitators code of conduct, a best practices document, and a training curriculum tailored for the LGBTQ+ community.
Finally, we delved into the significance of self-reflection and accountability in fostering a more equitable world for all. Rami offered insights on the need for restorative justice approaches in Lebanon and the importance of pre-conferencing. Ethan Ucker was a 2018 Mellon Collaborative Fellow for Reaching New Publics. ethan explores autonomous capacity- and infrastructure- building projects that have arisen in the context of social movements for Black liberation and Indigenous resurgence in the U.S. He studies the strategies used to materially provision these projects: the organizational containers and administrative forms that house and protect Black and Indigenous radical political imaginaries; less the manifestos and the speeches than the grant applications, budgets, and fundraising plans that they inspire and require. He is a co-founder of the hip-hop infused restorative justice organization Circles and Cyphers.

Roscoe has survived the murder of his son. He has been incarcerated for crimes from petty to felony and takes responsibility for the harm he has caused. Parts of his story are all too common in this country.

David Karp is a professor and director of the Center for Restorative Justice in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego. His current scholarship focuses on restorative justice in community and educational settings. For his work on campus restorative justice, he was the recipient of the 2019 Leadership and Innovation Award from the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice as well as the 2011 Donald D. Gehring Award from the Association for Student Conduct Administration. She is the owner of The Restorative Classroom, LLC, which provides services such as Restorative Justice in Education training, building staff relationships, addressing staff harm in educational environments, and creating just and equitable learning environments. She also offers technical support to schools implementing restorative practices. Ms. McNair served on her state commission for The School to Prison Pipeline and Restorative Practices, which pushed and helped pass state legislation for schools to adopt Restorative Approaches as a way to build relationships and keep youth in school. Tonya Covington is a Trainer, Mediator, Community Health Worker and Health Educator. Tonya has been engaged in training, consulting and coaching on issues of diversity, equity and cross-cultural communication for three decades and is an experienced “cultural humility” trainer.
She has been a Community Health Worker with the New Mexico Shared Strategic Plan Leadership Committee, the African American Health Network, the Native American Partnership, Project HOPE, and the New Mexico Health Equity Working Group, where she chaired the Deconstructing Racism Committee, as well as a Racial Justice Coordinator with the YWCA of the Middle Rio Grande.

Joe has been the victim of two separate violent anti-gay hate crimes and what began as a personal healing response to the trauma, he has transformed into professional involvement in the field of community and restorative justice. Since 2010, Joe has actively helped schools implement peer mediation programs and school-wide restorative practices. Jennifer Viets (she/her/hers) is a Restorative Justice practitioner both in community and in Chicago Public Schools. With an emphasis on using the arts to “reach, teach, and heal,” she has worked as a multi-disciplinary teaching artist and arts administrator for children and families for the past 30 years.

Janice Jerome is the recipient of many awards, including the 2015 Community and Leadership Restorative Justice award from the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice (NACRJ), the Romae Powell award, and the Director's Award of the Juvenile Courts Association of Georgia. Ms. Jerome is the founder of The Restorative Justice Institute of Atlanta, LLC. This organization is dedicated to keeping "justice moving" by inspiring all to examine how to "say hard things in a good way." She received her training from Kay Pranis and Gwen Rivers Jones in 2004.

This Black History Month join the Amplify RJ community in pushing the conversation about abolition into more spaces!
Carceral mindsets harm everyone, but somehow we still rely on them in society. Learn the history of the political movements and actions of abolitionists who have come before us so we can help others imagine and build a world without the need for police and prisons.
Every Saturday in February (9-10am PST) DeMointé Wesley and other aspiring abolitionists will explore:
- Feb. 5: The Struggle for the Abolition of Slavery
- Feb. 12: Black Liberation, State Repression, and the Anti-Prison Movement
- Feb. 19: Police and Prison Abolition Today
- Feb. 26: A Black Abolitionist Future
Each session will be accompanied by an asynchronous video lesson giving laying the ground work for the Saturday conversations. Saturday sessions will be recorded for those who are unable to attend live.

William Evans is the co-director for this Institute for Transformative Mentoring. As a restorative justice practitioner William focuses on healing, developing, and leading systems that impact individuals on a journey to rebuild community, decrease violence and incarceration. William is the founder of Neighborhood Benches, an organization increasing the presence of local neighborhood leadership to focus on youth violence and incarceration.

Amber Hikes is a social justice advocate, community organizer, and unapologetic queer black woman. She currently serves as the ACLU’s first Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer, but has roots in community organizing and activism, social work, and youth development. You may also know Amber as the person responsible for the black and brown stripes being added to the rainbow LGBTQ flag. No matter what space Amber finds herself in, she is always pushing for equity and justice for all.

The featured episode from "The Restorative Lens Podcast" hosts LTomay Douglas and Allana Ojibway speak with Edward Valandra, Waŋbli Wapȟáha Hokšíla, who is both an author and editor for Colorizing Restorative Justice.
His chapter, “Undoing the First Harm: Settlers in Restorative Justice,” gives voice to the need for settlers to recognize the ways that restorative justice too often fails to address the first harm: which is the theft and continued occupancy of Indigenous land. Through honesty and education, Edward sheds light on the contradicting relationship between RJ practitioners instilling restorative practices/values, while at the same time failing to acknowledge or take accountability for ways that settlers continue to benefit from the stolen land. He discusses practical ways that educators and practitioners can take action and bring dialogue of the First Harm into restorative spaces.

Katherine Evans has been a professor in teacher education at Eastern Mennonite University since 2011. She teaches courses in educational psychology, special education, and restorative justice in education (RJE).

Nancy Riestenberg has thirty years of experience in the fields of violence prevention education, child sexual abuse prevention and restorative measures in schools. She has worked with school districts in Minnesota and 20 other states, from Cass Lake-Bena to the Chicago Public Schools, and speaks nationally on restorative measures at conferences and through trainings, and through the Minnesota Department of Education.

Daniel Malec is Restorative Practices Director at Georgia Conflict Center (GCC) in Athens, Georgia. Daniel has a Master of Arts in Conflict Transformation from the Center for Justice and Peacebuilding at Eastern Mennonite University. He has worked for 20+ years in the areas of youth development, youth violence prevention and intervention, conflict transformation, restorative justice and school administration.

In the month of August I'm doing a lot of work with individual schools, but we do have a public workshop series, Foundations of Restorative Justice running on August 2nd and 9th.
While not as in depth as our RJ summer intensive, the 8-hour foundations of RJ series Participants dive deeper into the restorative mindsets, proactive restorative practices, and the restorative process. You'll explore about how restorative values, self care practices, collaborative agreements, check in practices, communication for connection, and the restorative process get us to restorative outcomes of healing, relationships, and accountability. This is an opportunity to grow in your Restorative Journey by participating in group activities/discussion, building relationships with folx in your cohort, and self reflection on your practice.

Dr. Shaniqua Jones completed her doctoral degree in Interdisciplinary Leadership with a specialization in higher education in May 2016. Her diverse background in academics and her profession as well as her personal journey has allowed her to understand the concerns of those she serves. Dr. Jones is a wife and mother of five biological children as well as an author of three astonishing works. She is currently a Restorative Justice Coordinator – Dean of Students at Chicago Collegiate Charter School and the founder of Purple Path.

Over a period of 10 years Stephen has been a Restorative Justice practitioner/trainer and has facilitated and implemented various community and youth programs. In 2015 he started Global CommUnity Associates, a Restorative consulting firm grounded and centered in the cornerstones of perpetual learning, truth, common values, and progress. Stephen currently serves at Oak Park Public Library where in 2016 he aided in the integration of Social Services into Public Libraries. In 2020 Stephen transitioned into the Manager of Teen Services. Stephen is a licensed realtor and a firm believer that home ownership is the biggest way of investing in communities and promotes this through buying and selling real estate. He uses his extensive background of serving communities to serve his clients well.

Carlos J. Malave, the author of Translating Your Success, has developed the Restorative Power Program after years of being an educator in the classroom (Inwood Academy for Leadership, YES Prep & KIPP Houston High School) and a mentor for troubled youths. As a child, Carlos was a success at sports but lagged behind his siblings in academics. After reflecting on his circumstances, Carlos realized that he could succeed in school by applying the same principles that made him a good athlete to being a good student. He translated his success from one area of his life to another and now he is here to help all of the kids who may find themselves in the same situation.

Stephanie Sarantos, RN, PhD (she/they) lives on Coast Salish, Ssduhubr land, now called Bothell (north of Seattle Washington). Stephanie is a founder and current staff member at The Clearwater School, a radical educational community where students direct their own education, share equal rights with adults and have a voice in all decisions influencing their daily lives. She is also a partner with Snohomish County Mutual Aid and a cochair of Anti-racist Communities Bothell. Stephanie’s work in restorative justice is informed through her experience as a staff member at Clearwater, a dancer, an oncology and hospice nurse, a mother, a circle practitioner, and friend of Cuba. She is committed to fighting racism and oppression. She is a strong believer in multiple ways of knowing and learning. Stephanie believes in changing the world through daily practice and action—most often in many small steps.

Tom has been involved in research and professional development focused on creating a Culture of Care in schools based on restorative justice principles and practices, as well as culturally appropriate interactions and relationships, for over 20 years. He is privileged to work with scholars and practitioners throughout the world. As Program Director of RJEd, Tom oversees research and professional development to advance the efficacy and success of Restorative Justice Education. Jammy is the daughter of two Puerto Rican migrants and was born and raised in Boston, Mass. Jammy has been an RJ practitioner for over 7 years, within the Boston Public Schools and most recently in the Higher Ed space as she created an RJ Education & Implementation Org called StayJust. Michelle Day is a minister, attorney and certified mediator, with more than 25 years of experience in conflict transformation, dedicated to the healing of community. She is employed as Program Administrator for the Juvenile Justice and Child Protection Department of the Circuit Court of Cook County, developing restorative justice collaborations between court, community, public and private agencies, to meet the needs of court involved children and families.

Shadeequa Smith has dedicated her career to studying the criminal justice system and understanding its impact on individuals, families, and communities. Her efforts are informed by her work with organizations that improve the transition from incarceration into the community. She has experience in problem solving courts, the U.S. Probation Office, and, most recently, as the director of training for the nonprofit Prison of Peace. Dr. Abdul-Malik Muhammad has been a grassroots organizer and activist for marginalized communities for nearly twenty-five years. He has focused on the development of Black boys to men, establishing a progressive pedagogy for oppressed youth and building progressive organizations. He has founded two organizations, Akoben LLC and Transforming Lives Inc., as vehicles to “transform lives, one community at a time.”

Belinda Dulin began her employment with The Dispute Resolution Center 2003 as the Mediation Services Coordinator and assisted in launching the Small Claims Mediation Program and the Domestic Relations Motion Day Program. She has also been a director of mediation services and Executive Director at DRC. Barbara A. Sherrod is a restorative practices Program director, avid reader, writer and mother of two. Through story-telling circles and transformative coaching, Barbara educates school communities on the use of restorative practices for interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship building; addressing race and gender based-harms perpetuated in school communities. Her website, MillennialMochaMoms provides space for Black millennial mothers to share their maternal experiences and create community. Barbara is currently a doctoral student at Morgan State University studying Urban Educational Leadership.

Michelle Armster is African American. She is also the executive director for the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) Central States in North Newton, KS. She worked for MCC in the US Peace and Justice program in urban peacemaking as the director of Conciliation Services and co-director for the Office on Justice and Peacebuilding. She attended Lancaster Theological Seminary, where she received a master of divinity. Michelle is a trainer, teacher, and practitioner in the areas of conflict transformation, mediation, anti-racism/anti-oppression, offender-victim mediation (OVM), restorative justice/practices, and crimes of severe violence.

Dr. Desirée Anderson was born in San Diego, California. The child of naval personnel, she had the pleasure of moving around a lot including living in Belgium where she attended High School. Desiree returned to the U.S. to live in Louisville, Kentucky where she completed both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from the University of Louisville. Having worked in higher education for over 13 years, Dr. Desirée Anderson has committed her energy to address issues of bias and hate on college and university campuses. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of New Orleans researching The Use of Campus-Based Restorative Justice Practices to Address Incidents of Bias: Facilitators’ Experiences. Before coming to serve as the Associate Dean of Diversity and Student Affairs at the University of New Orleans she worked as the Director of the Intercultural Center at Saint Mary’s College of California and previously held positions as the Associate Director of Multicultural Affairs at Tulane University and as an Area Residence Director at Texas State University. Desirée serves as an instructor in the Educational Administration Master's degree program at UNO and as a Restorative Justice National Team Trainer for the Center for Restorative Justice at the University of San Diego. Dr. Anderson has recently released a book chapter in Colorizing Restorative Justice by Living Justice Press.

Born and raised in the Little Village Community of Chicago, IL, Sandra Sosa’s social justice philosophy and approach to community development weaves ancestral teachings and rites of passage work together with modern youth development practices. Her personal journey began as a rites of passage recipient and mentor with Youth Struggling for Survival and since then she has grounded her work in ancestral teachings, which nurture each individual to take their own contributions into account and to develop themselves into changing behaviors unbecoming of a healthier and harmonious way of life.
Sandra is the first generation middle daughter of her Mexican parents, is fluent in both Spanish and English, and recently began learning her native language of Nahuatl. She graduated from Northern Illinois University with an award as Outstanding Woman. Sandra continues to use her experiences, knowledge, and skills to work with building the capacity of adults to strengthen positive relationships with children and youth.

Our first episode of the 2021 is one of the most widely published authors in the field of restorative justice and peacemaking. Kay Pranis is a national leader in restorative justice, specializing in peacemaking Circles. She served as the Restorative Justice Planner for the Minnesota Department of Corrections from 1994 to 2003. Before that, she worked six years as the director of research services at the Citizen’s Council on Crime and Justice. She has written and presented papers on peacemaking Circles and restorative justice in the United States, Canada, Brazil and more. Since 1998, Kay has conducted Circle trainings in a diverse range of communities—from schools to prisons to workplaces to churches, from rural farm towns in Minnesota to Chicago’s South Side.

She is a psychology professor and sex educator and the podcast challenges the thing people think they know about sex. This episode "Rethinking Justice for Sexual Assualt" aired in June of 2020. It features an interview with me (David) breaking down Restorative Justice for her audience and an interview with Mia Hunte of Hidden Water NYC sharing how circle work helped her heal from her sexual assault.
