The gang are away this week, but never fear! We have a Patreon unlock for you! in an episide that originally aired in February of 2024, Andy and Al talk all things LOOOOVEEE as we count down the top love interests that Link has had in the series (sorry guys, no Sidon, though we tried), from the fun and cute flings to the heartbreaking romances that destiny just wouldn’t allow. Plus, we’re counting down the best Zelda announcement trailers of all time (only rule is the trailer needed to provide new information)! From the epic Breath of the Wild 2017 trailer all the way back to the days of the early 2000’s in the hallowed pages of Electronic Gaming Monthly, we’re taking a trip through memory lane.

Come hang out with us and let us know what you think!

It was a busy week for Nintendo, as in addition to putting on Zelda-themed booth at PAX West, they also dropped a new Echoes of Wisdom trailer showing off tons of new footage and abilities! We’re joined by our good friend Corey Richmond this week as we break down the trailer and give our thoughts and takeaways; we go over the Still World, the void that only Zelda and Tri can enter; discuss our excitement for the return of traditional dungeons; and debate if the Swordfighter ability was truly needed, or if it’s a step backwards for Princess Zelda. We wrap it up with some stray observations and other notes on things that stood out in the trailer – if you want to watch it in video form, check out here!

All this, PLUS we give some quick thoughts on the Indie and Partner Direct, plus a little Zelda Cartoon and Rings of Power chatter! Come hang out with us!

We’re back for part two of our Breath of the Wild / Tears of the Kingdom hot takes (and a few Age of Calamity ones in there too!). This week, we’re tackling subjects like: was Yunobo the best character across the Wild era games? Do the Divine Beast dungeons offer a more welcoming for new players puzzle experience? Was it disappointing the Pirates in Lurelin were just Moblins? Are Remote Bombs the best rune/ability? Is Colgera seriously the most disappointing boss in the game? Was Calamity Ganon more interesting than Ganondorf?

All this and so much more, PLUS our thought on the Nintendo Museum and strange American geography! Come have a blast with us!

One of our favorite segments returns this week! We asked for YOUR spiciest hot takes regarding Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, and boy oh boy, you guys delivered, SO MUCH SO that this will be PART 1 of a two part episode! We’re reacting to all sorts of takes, including: is Tears a great experience, or just glorified DLC? Is Cece’s Mushroom hat better than the Couples Mask? Would Kohga have been a better choice of villain than Ganondorf? Do fighting bosses again in the Depths diminish the impact of fighting them in a dungeon? Speaking of, are the dungeons of Tears and Breath of the Wild better than many traditional dungeons?

All this and so much more! If you want to contribute next week, feel free to do so, and we can even get Age of Calamity in on the action! Until next week!

We’re back for another fun episode this month! I’m joined by Legend Tier Patron Tony again to tackle a couple of fun subjects! First, we dive into our top ten NES enemies (just the common folk, no bosses!) and discuss everyone from the usual suspects – Darknuts, Lynels, Patras – to the more obscure picks – we don’t want to give any away! Next up, we’re talking about our favorite animal companions in the series – no prizes for guessing who came out at number one, but we had a blast!

Come let us know what you think of our list and let us know who your favorites are!

Hello Zelda fans! We got a nice treat this week, as Nintendo randomly dropped about 6 minutes of footage from Echoes of Wisdom for us to sink our teeth into! We discuss TONS of things shown off, including out thoughts on Bond and Reverse Bond and how that impacts the gameplay, smoothies and how they seem to be a proxy for Elixirs, the confirmation of side quests and an adventure log, our first look at Impa and King Hyrule, Zelda’s new outfits, our thoughts on the new regions in the game, and of course, Zelda’s horse riding skills!

All this, PLUS a little Borderlands Movie talk and some cool Omega Metroid announcements! Come hang out with us!

After a long, LONG layover, we are back streaming Ocarina of Time Randomizer by popular demand! Last time we we played, we had just beaten King Dodongo but got stuck with a lack of items trying to get into Jabu Jabu’s Belly, so this time, we’re scouring Hyrule looking for upgrades! We venture to Kakariko Village, Goron City, the Lost Woods, and Gerudo Valley in search of items, PLUS Andy learns that Epona can jump across the Gerudo bridge, we find the Megaton Hammer in the Gerudo Training Grounds, and discover the location of the Hookshot – although it’s just out of reach!

W had a blast, and if you want to watch the full video, click here to go to our Twich page! Ocarina of Time Randomizer WILL be back!

It’s time again for everyone’s favorite hypothetical Zelda game to return! That’s right – Zelda’s Percentages is back after 9 months! The premise is very simple: we make a hypothetical statement and assign a percentage on the likelihood of that statement coming true. This week is Echoes of Wisdom focused, as we touch on if the game can break 10 million in sales, whether Shiek makes a cameo appearance, if there will be a brand new villain, and if we’ll end up fighting Link at some point in the game! We also sprinkle in some general Zelda questions, like if the Zelda movie will end up with a critics score of 75% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes, if Princess Zelda is playable in the next Mario Kart game, if Nintendo will ever acknowledge the Zelda timeline again, and so much more!

Come play along with us, and get ready for the return of Ocarina of Time randomizer next week!

This week, we’re putting a bow (for now!) on our Echoes of Wisdom announcement coverage as we answer some of Zelda Dungeon’s Daily Debates regarding the new game, and sprinkle a few about Zelda in general for good measure too! On the docket this time: will Link and Zelda speak in game? Will Echoes of Wisdom lean more open world or have a more linear progression? Should we expect this game to be in the Downfall timeline? Is Zelda going to abandon the Triforce going forward? How could Nintendo improve its online experience? What’s the most celebratory moment in the series? All this, and so much much more!

Don’t miss next week, as we’ll be live streaming Four Swords and giving our thoughts and trying to co-exist! The stream starts at 12 pm MST July 14th over on our Twitch page! See you all then!

We’re back this week answering all of your Echoes of Wisdom questions! On the docket, we have subjects like: do we think that the combat of Echoes could get repetitive? Will there be a playable Link section in this game, or just strictly Zelda? Where in the timeline do we see this game falling? Are dungeons making their return, and if so, do they play more like traditional 2D dungeons? Speaking of, ill the dungeon maker mode from Link’s Awakening 2019 return? Is one of the most proud traditions in Zelda – the trading sequence – due for a return?

All this and so much more, PLUS a little tease for an upcoming show! Come and hang out with us!

It’s a special WEDNESDAY edition of the Zelda Cast, and for good reason: for the first time in almost 40 years, we now have a Zelda game where you play as Princess Zelda! The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom was announced in Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct, a brand new Zelda game starring the titular character and a mysterious fairy named Tri who need to save Link and Hyrule! We get together and discuss our reactions to the trailer, the fact that we finally get to play as Zelda, what we think of the echo system, how fantastic the toy art style looks, our appreciation for Grezzo, and how stoked we are that it’s 99 days and counting away! From there, we flip over and talk Four Swords coming to NSO finally with online play!

We’re also talking about everything else shown off in the Nintendo Direct, from Perfect Dark to Mario & Luigi to Donkey Kong Country Returns to, of course, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (if you want to hear Andy and the Omega guys’ reaction to that trailer, check out their episode here!)

Would we rather the Zelda movie be awful, or not made at all? Would we rather leave out the Triforce or Master Sword from the next Zelda game? Would we rather the Hover Boots return or the Iron Boots? Would we rather all future dungeons are Divine Beast style or have every game take place in Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule? Would we rather Zelda VR or Metroid VR?

All this and so much more, PLUS some discussion about Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and Summer Game Fest! Come hang out with us, and FYI – no stream next week!

A couple of the questions we had fun with include: would you rather get a brand new Zelda right away and wait for the Switch 2 for ten years, or vice versa? Would you rather play Tri Force Heroes solo or 100% Hyrule Warriors? Would we rather all future Zelda games are open world, or traditional 3D titles? Would we have rather had a more fleshed out Sky or more fleshed out Depths in Tears o the Kingdom? All this, plus a ton more!

We’re also giving our thoughts on the new Zelda LEGO, following up on our Definitive Ranking of the OG Legend of Zelda, and wishing everyone a happy Pride Month!

It’s time to kick it old school with another entry into our Definitive Ranking series, this time, examining the game that started it all: The Legend of Zelda! We’re going through ten critical categories that make up the ingredients to a Zelda game – world, story, pacing, art style, dungeons, bosses/enemies, items, gameplay, extras, and music – and assigning them each a score to see how the original game stacks up against all of the legendary entries that came after it! Some of the scores will be no-brainers, while others might leave you scratching your head, so come along and play with us, and of course, be sure to share what you think!

All this, PLUS a little movie talk, our favorite NES titles and more! Come hang out with us!

We’re back this week continuing the discussion around Tears of the Kingdom, except this time, we’re comparing and contrasting it to three other direct sequels in the Zelda franchise: Majora’s Mask, Phantom Hourglass, and A Link Between Worlds! We go over what makes a game a direct sequel in our eyes, how each game changed up the gameplay from its predecessors, if there was enough new content to make the sequel feel distinct, and so much more!

We’re also covering the reaction to our Tears of the Kingdom anniversary episode, so come and hang out with us!

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been one year since the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, so this week, we’re reflecting back on the game and talking about how our thoughts or opinions have changed or been cemented now that the dust has settled. We discuss Tears’ legacy as a sequel, as a standalone Zelda game, and where it ranks among our favorite Zelda games. Andy and Al both have strong opinions on the game, and they don’t necessarily agree either, so get ready for a killer show!

All this, PLUS we touch on Nintendo’s announcement of the Switch 2 coming this fiscal year, what that means for the rest of 2024 and 2025, and our thoughts and fears surrounding that. Come hang with us!

Recently, our Zelda Dungeon Writing Staff released a feature that collected the various writers’ SPICIEST Zelda hot takes, and just like we did on the podcast a few months ago, we’re now reacting to each take and assigning it a SPICE meter. On the table: is the downfall timeline the only logical conclusion for the timeline to go following the events of Ocarina of Time? And speaking of that game, is nostalgia the only thing keeping it atop our Best Zelda Ever lists? Is Ballad of the Goddess and Saria’s Song overrated? Would Twilight Princess be just fine without Princess Zelda? Are Mipha and Revali compelling characters? All this and so much more are discussed!

Are these takes Eldin Hot, Hebra Cold, or somewhere in between? Listen to find out, and let us know what your own hot takes are!

Welcome to a nice and cozy edition of the show today, as have a chill time answering some of the amazing Daily Debates our Writing Team ha created! On the docket today: is 5-6 years between 3D Zelda games the new norm now, and if so, should it be? What’s one of the more underrated themes in the series? What’s our favorite piece of Zelda content in Super Smash Bros.? Why wasn’t underwater exploration included in Tears of the Kingdom? Could the age of online play give Four Swords Adventures a second life one day? What era would be a good setting for another Hyrule Warriors game? And maybe most importantly – on a holiday weekend, what goes harder, mashed potatoes or scalloped potatoes?

All this, PLUS we put a bow on Musical March Madness, and we wish a happy Trans Day of Visibility, and a happy Easter to all who celebrate!

Welcome to another episode of the show, where this week, we have the honor of closing out Zelda Dungeon’s Four Swords Week celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the single most unheralded Zelda game of them all: Four Swords Adventures! Andy and Al recount their memories of the game from the time it was first announced, to the first time they played together at the Zelda Dungeon Marathon, and reflect on the things that held it back from being a huge sales success. We also talk about our favourite levels from the game, how Adventures helped popularize the 2D/3D hybrid graphical style popular now, and how we would change the game so it could be remade as an online title!

All this, PLUS we talk some Musical March Madness and the cruelty of snow in March. Come celebrate with us!

Welcome to the Zelda Cast, where this week, we’re not really talking about Zelda! Well, that’s not entirely true, but this week’s show is all about the sequel to one of the best new franchises we’ve played in recent years: Horizon: Forbidden West! Listen as we explore our thoughts on what this sequel did differently than Tears of the Kingdom, being an open world sequel itself, and what areas Forbidden West did better, and what areas Zelda came out on top. Plus, we talk about the new machines, the character acting, the music, performance and accessibility, and much more, and then end it off with a SPOILER heavy dive into the story, the characters, and setting up for what comes next!

Forbidden West and Tears of the Kingdom are two sides of the same coin, so consider grabbing it if you haven’t already! PLUS – come listen to Andy’s new podcast, The Spiteri’s Review! Join the Discord and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts!

We’re back this week examining the Zelda Dungeon Writing Team’s Daily Debates, and we’ve got some good ones this week, chief among them: is Tears of the Kingdom actually not getting any DLC? Why not? Should it have been announced already if so? We give our thoughts and theories, plus tackle other questions like: was Nintendo right to claim the dungeons in Tears were “traditional”? When do we think the next openworld Zelda game will be out (spoiler: Andy thinks it’s closer than you think!)? What’s up with the Breath of the Wild version of Hyrule and its inconsistencies with the lore of the series? Was there enough of a balance between old characters and new?

All this, PLUS a little GOTY discussion featuring Baulder’s Gate III, and Switch 2 thoughts and theories. Come hang out!

Buckle in, because it’s finally time! After months and months, we’re finally giving our full, SPOILER FILLED, thoughts on the story of Tears of the Kingdom! Did we like the Zonai being gods? How could Ganondorf and Mineru have been handled better? Was “Fake Zelda” the biggest missed opportunity of the game? After an amazing final battle, did the ending feel too cheap? Would a Days of Future Past gimmick have worked well here? And does Nintendo’s insistence of players being able to do anything, any time, anywhere hurt the story they were trying to tell?

All this, PLUS we talk about the Switch 2, September’s hopeful Nintendo Direct, and DLC! Don’t miss out on our greatest episode on Tears of the Kingdom yet, and make sure to let us know what you think!

It’s a moment years in the making.

It seems like an entire lifetime ago that we saw our first footage of what was then billed as “the sequel to Breath of the Wild.” It was a time of promise, of hope; a time when the world had no idea what was in store for them over the next several years. We all know what happened next. The Covid-19 pandemic stalled any and all momentum that “Breath of the Wild 2” had. Over the next several years, things would be quiet. The promise and hope turned to confusion and indifference. But eventually, after a slow and agonizing wait, we finally started to have the curtain pulled back, although admittedly not at a fast enough pace for this writer. The hope returned. The buzz started to grow. And then the final trailer dropped, and we were off to the races.

Tears of the Kingdom has a lot to live up to. Not only does it need to live up to the high standard of quality set by this incredible series over the last 36+ years, but it needs to carve out its own unique identity from its predecessor. When the Switch launched, there was real concern about the future of Nintendo as a hardware publisher, and the new portable console was almost akin to a Hail Mary. Some games rise to meet the moment, while some moments transpire to make the game. Somehow, Breath of the Wild did both. Tears of the Kingdom definitely has a tall task ahead of it.

With the moment of Tears of the Kingdom‘s release just around the corner, we went and polled our Zelda Dungeon staff to ask them what would make Tears of the Kingdom the absolute best Zelda game it could be. Although we’ve covered similar ground before, it seemed appropriate to ask again, with the journey to get to this game about to reach its end point.

So, one last time… come read our final hopes and wishes for Tears of the Kingdom!

(Note: we have not seen any of the leaked footage or story elements, and will not factor that into our list. Any comments discussing leaked spoilers will be immediately deleted.)Leslie Jacobson: Zelda, a Goddess RebornAt the end of Breath of the Wild, after Link defeats Ganon and meets Zelda, the princess asks Link, “Do you remember me?” If you found all of the memories, you are treated to an extra cutscene. While it’s very sweet, it’s not a perfectly happy ending. Zelda mentions that she can no longer hear the voice inside the sword, wondering if her power has dwindled in the last 100 years. She says she can accept that. To me, it felt like a letdown after she had failed at preventing the Calamity and then bounced back spectacularly from that failure to seemingly lose her power. I can be happy for her, but I thought it was sad to take away something she had toiled over for so long.

My wish for this game is that, at the end, Zelda is fully realized as the true, powerful, reborn goddess that she is supposed to be, and that she is happy with where she is at the end of Tears of the Kingdom. Whether that means her original power, a new power, or just being content with who she is as a brainy scholar, I want Zelda and Link to be happy together.

John Piland: A Game With PermanenceAt first, I wanted to say a chance to rebuild Hyrule, but as I began playing through Breath of the Wild again, a new idea struck me: permanence. That is, permanence for Breath of the Wild’s side stories. From Tarrey Town, to a Guardian-obsessed girl, to a quintet of Rito children, I want to see lasting effects from the previous games’ side quests. A lot of heart was put into the words and characters in Breath of the Wild, and it’d be a shame to see everything the player worked for cast to the side and forgotten. As far as continuity is concerned, let’s assume all the quests are completed in canon. I want to meet familiar faces and see what they’ve been up to.

What’s the state of Link’s house? — Did Zelda move in? Did he give it up? — Did Hudson and Rhondson start a family? How did things turn out between Wabbin and Perda from Lover’s Pond? I want to see these stories continued and built upon; I want to see these characters grow with the world and the story.

Chakell Herbert: A Story To RememberAs much as I love Breath of the Wild’s story, it was a bit tedious to have to piece it together through memories. Although that mechanic worked for the open world, I think it could have been better in some ways. My hope is that Tears of the Kingdom will expound on Breath of the Wild and blow those past issues from its predecessor out of the water! I adore the storytelling in the Zelda universe, and with Tears of the Kingdom being a direct sequel to a game filled with characters and areas we’ve already grown to know and love, I can only hope that it manages to have a fantastic, engaging, and memorable story that rivals favorites like Ocarina of Time or Skyward Sword.

I want more relationship development between Link and Zelda (maybe a little nod to romance if it’s not too much to ask), a fantastic build-up and epic showdown between Link and Ganondorf, and way more cutscenes than we got in Breath of the Wild that explore Link’s personality and interactions with NPCs and the new Champions. I want a story that truly speaks to my soul, makes me week, and makes me feel like I’ve gone on an epic journey. And from the looks of the trailers, I think we are bound to get a masterpiece.

Judy Calder: Subrosians and PicoriOne of the many wonderful things about Tears of the Kingdom‘s predecessor was its iteration of existing races we’d seen in other Zelda installments. Some races looked almost exactly as expected under the game’s artistry, such as Gorons, while others appeared with an entirely new look, like the Rito.

I would be delighted to see races including Subrosians and the Picori appear in Tears of the Kingdom. While Subrosians would likely be a simple and predictable design with their peeking eyes and long cloaks, I think the Picori might have more elaborate features, especially the older and more chiefly tribe members. I’m thinking of long, flowing hair and intricate garb of many colors. Of course, the excitement of including existing races in Tears of the Kingdom doesn’t just stop at their physical design. With these races comes their towns and/or cities! We know there is some form of underground exploration in this title, which feels like the perfect opportunity to discover Subrosians in their own habitat. And who knows how Link might stumble upon the Picori’s homes, but it would be pretty cool to find a tiny town tucked away in some corner of Hyrule.

Heather Beard: A Battle For The AgesSince finishing Breath of the Wild on Master Mode, I have come to the conclusion that Calamity Ganon and Dark Beast Ganon were not the final challenge that I had been hoping for from a game like Breath of the Wild. Don’t get me wrong: they were challenging, but Dark Beast Ganon felt like a cake walk in comparison to past final bosses in the Zelda series.

My one last hope for Tears of the Kingdom is a boss fight that gets my heart racing. A boss fight where the stakes are high, and its Link and his sword against a great evil. Not Link on horseback hitting circles of light. I want a challenge like Demise from Skyward Sword. I remember having to try five different times in order to defeat the Demon King. And as much as I would love to defeat Tears of the Kingdom’s final boss on the first go, I wouldn’t mind it being so much of a challenge that I have to try multiple times.

There’s something about a challenging boss fight that makes finishing a game worth while. There’s a sense of reward in it. So I hope when we come to the end of Tears of the Kingdom’s story that we’re standing with Link as he fights to defeat Ganondorf once and for all in what I wish to be the most challenging Zelda boss fight yet.

Sean Gadus: Blacksmiths and ForgesOne of my biggest hopes for Tears of the Kingdom is tweaks to the weapon durability system introduced in Breath of the Wild. Whether you liked the concept or not, breakable items play an important role in the exploration and world design of Breath of the Wild. The game is constantly pushing the player to open every single chest and to scavenge for the best possible equipment. The problem with breakable weapons comes in the second half of Breath of the Wild where the player simply wants to maintain the powerful swords, bows, and shields that they have acquired throughout the adventure. After dozens of hours playing the game, it can feel frustrating to have to replace your strong or rare weapons.

While it looks like the new Fuse mechanic will play a significant role in increasing weapon durability, my hope is that the designers still provide some type of blacksmith or repair station for the best weapons in the game. Nintendo already provided players a way to replace key broken items like Urbosa’s Scimitar of the Seven, so it is not a stretch for the designers to develop some type of repair system or blacksmith shop for rare items. Also, let’s not put any limits on the use of the Master Sword in Tears of the Kingdom. The sword is the ultimate symbol of the Zelda series, and it should be the most powerful weapon in the game.

David Lasby: A Fellowship of the TearsOne final hope I have for Tears of the Kingdom is that players will be able to form combat parties. Seeing Link fight alongside Hylians, Gorons, and the new Champions (in the latest trailer) makes me hope that it’s more than cutscenes or special moments in the game.

I know they’re completely different genres of games, but playing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity really got me excited about the notion of Link leading on the battlefield, charging into combat and boosting morale. I don’t want large-scale battles like Age of Calamity, but small skirmishes would be exciting.

Ideally, players would be able to create a war party of 3-5 characters. Hylians, Rito, Gorons, Gerudo, Zora, (Zonai?!) could each have unique abilities which would be complementary in battle situations. Players could customize and strategize how to comprise the party. I believe this mechanic would fit well with the “explore Hyrule in your own way” mantra that Nintendo has hyped.

Mike Midwood: Less Story, PleaseMy overriding hope throughout this long wait was that Tears of the Kingdom wouldn’t simply be “Breath of the Wild 2.” While I do maintain that stance, there is one thing from its predecessor that I hope continues into Tears of the Kingdom: a story that is largely optional.

One of my favorite things in Breath of the Wild was the decision to have the majority of Hyrule’s most important events occur before the game actually begins. This more spaced-out presentation gives each moment time to shine, without bogging down the gameplay with stoppages like in many previous entries.

The story has never been a draw for me when it comes to Zelda games, so I was happy to see those elements reserved for moments of major progression such as when completing a Divine Beast. A brief cutscene with high production values can do wonders to punctuate these moments. Having large portions of the game’s story exist only as optional memories or side quests is the best of both worlds. Anyone interested in uncovering that information can do so as they please, and people like me who don’t care can just enjoy the gameplay experience without interruption.

Alex Weber: A Royal WeddingTears of the Kingdom looks to be an adventure to satiate all my curiosities. It’s wacky, zany, and absurd, as well as dark and angsty. It’s laced with the kind of conflict that has a great finality to it, and thus, I want Link and Zelda to have a very specific happy ending.

After everything they’ve been through — the separation, the things they’ve lost, the way they’ve likely healed together between the end of Breath of the Wild and the start of Tears of the Kingdom — I want to see them get married. Typing it makes me feel like a little girl playing with her dolls, but the connection between the two is something that already is the emotional heart of Breath of the Wild and, arguably, what we’ve seen of Tears of the Kingdom. I don’t care where the wedding is, I don’t care if it’s as predictable as Tarrey Town or if it’s in the ruins of Hyrule Castle. I just want them to be happy together in the end.

Charles Xavier: Side Quests That MatterMy final wish for Tears of the Kingdom is simply that there is more depth to side quests. I want more character driven interactions akin to Majora’s Mask, but beyond that, I want NPCs to feel real again, like they did in the aforementioned game. Breath of the Wild had this a little bit with a few characters that had daily routines, but it wasn’t utilized like it could have been. Give more NPCs routines, and make some events with characters interweave into proper questlines.

Something very specific that I want in this vein is a follow up to the Balloon Fight side quest with Shamae at Woodland Stable. Shamae is a little girl who has heard tales of an ancient kingdom in the sky, and she desperately wants to see it for herself. I’m hoping that in Tears of the Kingdom there is some new quest with her, maybe to help her explore the sky for herself!

That’s all I really want. I never had doubts the gameplay would be good, or any fear I had of the world being too similar to Breath of the Wild‘s are gone. I’m still unsure how the main story will unfold, but it looks to have a glimmer of promise at least; so I’m banking on an assumption that it will be good. All that leaves is good side content, and the game will have the recipe to totally impress me.

Kieran O’Connor: Exploration Middle-GroundFor Tears of the Kingdom, I’d like to see a mix of classic gameplay elements and new ones introduced in Breath of the Wild. Runes were an excellent idea, but I’d rather have them earned gradually throughout the game, maybe like dungeon items, instead of having them all off the start. Combine those with thoughtful, well-crafted dungeons like we used to have, rather than Divine Beasts that can all be easily cheesed with Revali’s Gale, and I think we’ll have the best of both worlds.

Some people complain about Skyward Sword being too linear, while others complain Breath of the Wild is too open. What I really want is something in the middle, something that lets players on both hands have something to look forward to.

Emi Curtis: That One Signature TrackDon’t get me wrong when I say this; I absolutely loved Breath of the Wild’s adaptive and atmospheric soundtrack. But for Tears of the Kingdom, I really want to see a couple big iconic music tracks. It’s hard to talk about Breath of the Wild’s soundtrack without talking about it as a whole. Definitely not a bad thing at all, but sometimes I just want to take a singular little bop and really vibe in that sound for awhile. Feel what it represents in the narrative.

Iconic songs like “Forest Temple,” “Gerudo Valley,” and “Hidden Village” are some of the hugest connections I have to Zelda when I’m not actively playing the games. I love putting on old soundtracks as I work; and while Breath of the Wild’s soundtrack was really good for when I wanted to chill out, there weren’t any standout moments I could put on repeat. Seeing a soundtrack that mixes the atmospheric approach of Breath of the Wild and the more iconic tracks of the past would really be a best of all worlds for Tears of the Kingdom.

Brandon Schmitz: Go All In On GanondorfTears of the Kingdom marks Ganondorf’s first appearance in a mainline Zelda game since Twilight Princess. That was over 15 years ago! As such, I desperately hope this game takes full advantage of the Demon King’s return.

There’s definitely some value in taking the less-is-more approach with some villains — the less we see of them, the more impactful it is when they do show up. That said, I’m ready for Nintendo to ditch this trend and give Ganondorf the spotlight he deserves. One of my biggest fears regarding Ganny is that — by the end of the adventure — he’ll have, once again, been relegated to roughly ten minutes of screen time.

No more, I say! Let’s expand upon his Wind Waker incarnation and delve deeper into his motivations. How does he interact with characters who aren’t named Link or Zelda? How has the passage of 10,000 years affected him?

I’ll be honest — I’m not expecting the game to take a page out of Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima’s book and give us 45 minute-long cutscenes. But I do think it’s reasonable to hope that Ganondorf will be at least a bit more involved throughout Tears of the Kingdom than he was in his previous three outings. If nothing else, he’s got to make up for all that lost time. We’ve missed you, buddy!

Alexis Anderson: It’s Time. Let Us Play As ZeldaMy one last wish for Tears of the Kingdom is that it includes segments in which players get to be Princess Zelda. It appears Zelda spends some portion of Tears of the Kingdom with a new community of people who are relevant to the game’s plot, so it would be fantastic if there are actions she has to perform to push the story forward and players get the chance to complete those as her.

I am not sure how feasible this will be in a mostly non-linear game, but perhaps once Link meets up with Zelda before the final boss players are given the option to play through her experience rather than just get a cutscene of it or hear her explain it. I think it is about time Zelda be playable in a main series Zelda game, and it would be an unexpected innovation for the franchise. Short of that, I hope at least that the story in Tears of the Kingdom sets up some new dynamics or a wellspring of open-ended questions that future plots can plumb.

Alasyn is away for the next couple weeks, so for this episode, Andy orchestrated an Omega Metroid takeover! Omega Metroid Podcasts’ Dakota Lasky and Community Manager Lillith join the show today to talk some Zelda in general and Tears of the Kingdom specifically. We discuss how the two of them became Zelda fans, which games are their favorites and why, which Zelda games they’re not in love with, and then transition over to Tears of the Kingdom and ask if the latest trailer finally sold them, thoughts on the voice acting, if time travel would improve the experience, how the main theme compares to others before it, and whether or not it’s possible Zelda could still be playable in any way.

Come hear about Tears of the Kingdom through a couple Metroid fans’ perspective, and don’t forget to check out OmegaMetroid.com!

WOW! THAT’S what we’ve been waiting for! In case you’ve been living under a rock, Nintendo released the third and final trailer for Tears of the Kingdom and it was by far the most exciting trailer shown so far! This week, the gang break down the trailer frame by frame, discussing where (or when) Zelda could have gotten off to, who the mysterious woman with light in her hands could be, the re-imagining of Gleeok and other bosses, if the Zonai in the trailer is the same one from the mural, how sky islands and caves might be connected, some of the new gameplay shots, and of course, THE RETURN OF THE KING OF EVIL, Mr. Hydrated Ganondorf himself!

THIS was the trailer that finally did it, and we can barely contain our excitement! Come hang out with us as we break this trailer down!

With Tears of the Kingdom so close we can almost touch it, we thought it would be a great time to reflect back on Breath of the Wild and break down one of the most crucial elements of the game: Shrine Quests! We’re ranking each and every single Shrine Quest, although there’s no way we could have fit it all into one episode, so we’re giving you PART ONE this week! We discuss what we like in our Shrine Quests, puzzles versus story and they play into each other, the fantastic Eventide Island get away, and tackle 23 of 42 Shrine Quests! We’ll have the full breakdown of our list next week, so be sure to check out Part Two!

All this, PLUS we give our early thoughts on the Super Mario Bros. Movie and where Nintendo might go next in its cinematic endeavours!

We finally got a new look at some of the gameplay of Tears of the Kingdom this past week, and we have A LOT to say! Come hear our thoughts on Link’s new abilities, what possibilities Fuse and Ultrahand present, our thoughts on the Zonai being more-or-less confirmed, what we noticed in terms of Easter eggs in the trailer, the Skyward Sword influences and new Construct enemies, how this game can make returning to the same world enticing again, and the million dollar question: was this enough to really give Tears of the Kingdom its own identity beyond just “more Breath of the Wild“?

Come hang out with us and get pumped as we Fuse, Ascend, Recall, and ULTRAHAND (sorry, no good way to slip that in) our way through this Ultra episode!

It’s another slow week of Zelda news – which is crazy, considering Tears of the Kingdom is 6 weeks away – so to pass the time, we asked YOU for your Zelda-themed “Would You Rather” questions, and you guys delivered big time! On the docket: would we rather wait longer for a new 3D game or have more new 2D games? Would we rather have non-Zelda costumes in future games or no Zelda representation in Smash Bros.? Would we rather Zelda music on Youtube or Zelda ports on the Switch? Would we rather Monk Maz Koshia or Tingle win a Zelda Dungeon contest? We even have a Tim Horton’s themed question!

All this, PLUS a plethora of different questions, a podcast guest appearance tease, and some Omega Metroid news!

This week, we dive into the numerous charming dungeons in the game, expand on our “less is more” mantra, talk about the bosses and items, and count just how many Darknuts you actually fight in Dark Hyrule Castle! We don’t see the dungeons eye to eye, so some negotiating might be in order!

All this, PLUS we’re throwing some of the latest Zelda news at you, talking about Alasyn’s Breath of the Wild vs Tears of the Kingdom thread, thoughts on The Last of Us, and gearing up for NEXT WEEK, where you can ask us a Zelda-themed ‘Would You Rather’ question! Come hang out with us!

Make sure that you get in on the action and fill out a prediction of your own to win some prizes! Remember – it’s a popularity contest, so pick who you think will win, not necessarily who you would vote for!

Hello everybody and WELCOME BACK to the fifth annual MUSICAL MARCH MADNESS. The premise is simple: 64 songs will go head to head in a series of single elimination matches, with the winner advancing to the next round, until there is only ONE song left standing that can be called the Greatest Zelda Song Ever. This post will be updated DAILY with new match-ups, so make sure you bookmark it. Polls will last 24 HOURS, STARTING AND ENDING AT 5 PM PACIFIC / 8 PM EASTERN, at which point the song with more votes advances to the next round. MAKE SURE YOU BOOKMARK THIS PAGE!

Just like last year, you have the opportunity to PREDICT THE BRACKET! It’s simple – get one point for guessing the correct winner of a first round matchup, get two points for guessing the correct winner of a second round matchup, and so on and so forth for every matchup until we get to the end! Think you know Zelda music and what the fans like? PROVE IT! Fill out the bracket and walk away with some ZELDA DUNGEON MERCH if you win!

In years previous, we’ve seen “Gerudo Valley”, “Dragon Roost Island”, “Midna’s Lament” take the field to task, while last year, “Ballad of the Goddess” soared above all the competition to enter the Hall of Champions. With Tears of the Kingdom a stones throw away, the field this year is wide open for a variety of contenders to take the tournament. It’s 2023 – a new song will claim the title of Best Zelda Song. Which one will it be? Only YOU can decide!

Predict the Bracket Challenge Contest!Click here to fill out a bracket for Musical March Madness! You’ll be tasked with predicting EACH and EVERY matchup from the opening contest to the final matchup! You’ll get 1 point for a correct first round prediction, 2 points for a second round prediction, 3 points for third round, 4 for fourth, and 5 for picking the winner. This is important: PICK WHO YOU THINK WILL WIN, NOT WHO YOU PERSONALLY WANT TO WIN. To reiterate, pick who you think our Zelda Dungeon audience will vote to win. This is a popularity contest, so remember to predict as such!

The person with the most points at the end of the tournament will WIN their item of choice from the Zelda Dungeon Merch Store! The tournament runs MARCH 15TH-MARCH31ST, so you have until MARCH 15th to submit a prediction!

With the recent addition of Game Boy Advance games to Nintendo Switch Online, there are a ton of people checking out arguably the most underrated Zelda game for either the first time or first time a long time: The Minish Cap! One of Andy’s favorite Zelda games, The Minish Cap was the one game Alasyn hadn’t played in forever, so after finishing, the gang get together to dive deep into the charming art style of the game, its great usage of items, how the Kinstone quest could have been improved, whether Vaati is a great villain our not, the lore behind the Four Sword, the mechanics of the world-within-a-world, and so much more!

Come hang out with us as we talk Minish Cap, sprinkle in some Twilight Princess, and reveal some new Zelda Cast merch!

Wow. Wowowow. THAT, my friends, was a Nintendo Direct for the ages. Despite Nintendo arguably holding back yet again on Tears of the Kingdom, there was no doubt that the trailer we saw for the game was by far the meatiest one yet. Add in the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance NSO news, with The Minish Cap and Link’s Awakening DX being playable RIGHT NOW with the Oracles not far behind it, and there was more Zelda news in this 40 minutes than there has been in seemingly years! Add in Metroid Prime Remastered, Pikmin 4, and more games, and this might have been the greatest Nintendo Direct ever!

If you missed Andy and Al’s reactions and thoughts live, come relive them now, and make sure to hang with us this weekend as we break down all the trailers frame by frame!

Happy New Year! We’re ringing in 2023 by answering a whole slew of Zelda Daily Debates that our incredible writing team has put together! Included in the gambit are: how much influence will Skyward Sword have on Tears of the Kingdom? Why has Nintendo been so secretive with the promotion thus far? What are our biggest fears about the upcoming sequel to Breath of the Wild? Could another delay be on the table? Would Nintendo ever release a buggy Zelda game a la Pokemon Scarlet and Violet? What Zelda-like games held us over in 2022? And the million dollar question – how will Tears of the Kingdom distinguish itself from Breath of the Wild?

Come and get your year started the right way by hanging out with the Zelda Cast, and don’t forget to weigh in with your own takes on our Daily Debates!

Despite nabbing the Most Anticipated Game award, Tears of the Kingdom was a no-show at this years Game Awards, continuing the bizarre, frustrating, and perplexing pre-release cycle the sequel to Breath of the Wild has been on since its reveal, capping off what may go down as the worst year for The Legend of Zelda in the modern era. If you think that’s dramatic, come listen to Andy and Al explain why they hold that opinion, and debate on whether Nintendo’s arrogance is showing. On the plus side, the gang review the actual Game Awards show, which all things considered, was pretty good. We talk Earthblade, Hades, Death Stranding 2, the Super Mario Bros. Movie, Crime Boss, and so much more!

This episode might not be for the faint of heart, but it’s still a fun time! PLUS, come and ask us a question for next weeks show and you could hear it answered!

The time traveling trope is well worn in science fiction and fantasy, and for good reason: putting characters in a new but familiar setting, letting them change the past to inform the future, creating seemingly impossible inventions or scenarios and chalking it to technological progress, are all things that can really augment a story if done properly. The Zelda series is no stranger to this trope, either, with Oracle of Ages, Ocarina of Time, Skyward Sword, and more all using...

It’s that time of year again where MUSICAL MARCH MADNESS makes its triumphant return! As in years past, the gang go through the bracket and decide each matchup until the field of 64 has been whittled down to just one final champion. Some of our picks this year were surprising even to us, to make sure to tune in, as we also discuss whether we should vote for past winners or let new songs win, the dichotomy of some of the worst games having some of the best music, and our most overrated Zelda song!

Come listen and don’t forget to play along with us this year for the fourth annual Musical March Madness.

Hello everybody and WELCOME BACK to the fourth annual MUSICAL MARCH MADNESS.

PROVE IT! Fill out the bracket and walk away with the ultimate BRAGGING RIGHTS if you win!

In years previous, we’ve seen “Gerudo Valley” and “Dragon Roost Island” clean up the field, with “Midna’s Lament” being added to the Hall of Champions last year. This year, we saw the rerelease of Skyward Sword which will be looking to prove its dominance, as well as some old favorites jockeying for position. It’s 2022 – a new song will claim the title of Best Zelda Song. Which one will it be? Only YOU can decide!

Of all the things that have been driving me crazy about the long (so long…) wait for more information about the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is that we still don’t know what it’s called. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty over calling this game “Breath of the Wild 2” or “the Sequel”, and coupled with the fact that this game is supposedly coming out in 2022, it just seems absurd to me that we still don’t have a name for the game.

My question, however, is when we DO get a name for the sequel, would you like to have it connect back to the Breath of the Wild title? In a similar manner to how A Link Between Worlds played on the title of A Link to the Past, I could see Breath of the Wild 2 being called something like “Sequel of the Wild” or “Breath of the Something” (working titles people!). Of course, we’ve also had direct sequels like Phantom Hourglass or Majora’s Mask that had nothing to do with the original games title, so it’s really anybody’s guess.

Would a play on the title of Breath of the Wild make sense for the sequels subtitle? Or would you rather see something new and original? Let us know in the comments below!

With the recent news that come March 2023, Nintendo will be shutting down the servers that operate the eShop for the Wii U and 3DS, it really represents the final nail in the coffin of those systems. While I look back fondly at the 3DS and its amazing collection of games and reminisce about all the time I spent with my handheld, I can’t help but look at the Wii U differently. While it no doubt had some great games, I think it’s no question that this is the most disappointing Nintendo console. Sandwiched between the two most successful Nintendo machines ever in the Wii and the Switch, the Wii U was such an abysmal failure that people were questioning Nintendo’s future as a hardware developer, and it’s not hard to see why the system failed.

The Gamepad always felt like a flimsy children’s toy, it launched without a AAA title to back it up, it relied on the Wiimote gimmickry of the Wii too much, and its reveal sparked confusion about whether this was even a new console or an addon for the ultra-successful Wii. To further add insult to injury, essentially every Wii U game worth playing is now available on the Switch, including Breath of the Wild, which was once looked at as the savior of the Wii U.

To me, there’s no doubt that this is the most disappointing Nintendo console, and I think the sales numbers reflect that, but what do you think? Are you a Wii U defender? Or are you glad to see the console go quietly into the night? Let us know in the comments below!

We finally got a Nintendo Direct, and while it was mostly awesome, the absence of Breath of the Wild 2 loomed large over the proceedings. We break down what exactly we think is going on with that game and when we think it will be fully revealed, and then spend some time breaking down the rest of the games shown off. Splatoon 3, Triangle Strategy, Advance Wars all look awesome, and the new titles revealed like Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Fire Emblem Warriors 2, and Nintendo Switch Sports also look really promising. Throw in a free update for Metroid Dread and DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and we had a mostly good time!

Come hear our full thoughts, and THANK YOU to everyone who tuned into our Episode 200 live stream! Look forward to that in podcast form next week!

After reading the fantastic editorial my colleague Mike Midwood penned about enjoying Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, I felt compelled to go back and visit it, maybe not playing from start to finish, but at least doing a dungeon or two. There were two options available to me: playing on my Switch, or playing on my Zelda Game & Watch. I remember a few months ago while I was reviewing the Game & Watch thinking about how… unplayable and joyless Adventure of Link seemed to be, so I made the easy decision and decided to play on my Switch, complete with all the bells and whistles like save states, rewind, and luxury mode.

Playing this infamously difficult and defeating game under these conditions wasn’t actually too bad. In fact, despite having to rewind more times than I’d like to admit, I dare say I had a pretty fun time. But it did make me think of people like Mike, people who enjoy the original game for what it is. I realized that I just couldn’t count myself as one of those people. Without the quality of life improvements, I would never want to play The Adventure of Link, and frankly, I know a lot of people who still don’t want to play it even with all these upgrades.

My question is where do you fall? Are you able to enjoy this game as it originally released, lunching difficulty and all? Or are you more of a Switch Online kind of player? Or maybe, no matter what, Link’s sophomore adventure just isn’t for you? Let us know in the comments below!

The hunger for remakes of classic Zelda games is ever-present in our fanbase, and with good reason. Every remake or HD port presents a chance to smooth over some of the rough edges of the initial release with quality-of-life improvements, updated graphics, and higher quality music. After the release of Link’s Awakening for the Switch in 2019, the focus shifted from wanting a remake of that game to wanting a remake of the two Oracle games for the Game Boy Color.

While those remakes would certainly be welcome and I’d enjoy them, I can’t help but think it would be even cooler if Nintendo gave us a “pseudo-remake”, something akin to A Link Between Worlds, where it was kind of a remake, but also an entirely new game. In my opinion, the original Oracle games are still really enjoyable in their current form, so why not, instead of rebuilding those games from the ground up, concentrate that focus on a new game set within the Oracle world? You even have a readymade premise with the fabled Oracle of Secrets game that may-or-may-not have existed at one point.

What do you guys think? Would you rather Nintendo play it safe and deliver an enhanced remake of Ages and Seasons, or would you be fine leaving those as is and playing something new that was set in that world? Let us know in the comments below!

If you were to ask me “what game had the best pre-order bonus ever?”, I wouldn’t even hesitate to tell you that the answer is The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Not only did it come with a free game, but that game was Ocarina of Time (the best video game ever made!), and this version had a completely NEW set of dungeons and puzzles? Are you kidding me? Score!

Titled The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest, this bonus version, which is also included in the 3DS version of Ocarina of Time, didn’t have “new” dungeons necessarily, but it sure remixed and changed the basic premise of most dungeons enough that it felt refreshing and interesting. So my question to you is what game would you like to see get the “Master Quest” treatment? A remixed Arbiter’s Grounds with even more Spinner sections sounds like a blast, and thinking about the possibilities for Timeshift stone puzzles in a re-jigged Sandship or Lanayru Mining Facility has me wishing it was real. It would even be an opportunity to breathe some life into the less-celebrated dungeons like a Dragon Roost Cavern or Snowhead Temple.

What’s your pick for the Zelda game that you’d want to see get a Master Quest? Let us know in the comments below!

Besides The Legend of Zelda, one of my favorite video game franchises is Final Fantasy, in no small part thanks to the fantastical stories and characters from game to game. While the quality of protagonists ebbs and flows from game to game (seriously Squall, cheer up bro), the villains are almost always awesome, which of course gets me thinking: which one of these guys would I want to see crossover into the Zelda universe.

A lot of these characters would feel pretty natural to me, actually. Sin from Final Fantasy X has some serious Calamity Ganon vibes; ditto for Ex-Death and any of the Blights. Ultimecia as an evil sorceress is something we’ve seen before in A Link to the Past, I’ve always thought that Zant took a little inspiration from Kekfa, and a corrupt, power hungry politician like Vayne seems like it would fit right in with Zelda. Of course, who I’m sure everyone wants to see is Sephiroth duking it out with Link, and while that would no doubt be awesome, I’d personally love to see Kuja put his magic up against Princess Zelda’s in a battle of conflicted characters.

This crossover will (probably!) never happen, but if it did, who would you want to see? Let us know in the comments below?

The new year is upon us, and as always, it’s a time to feel both reflective on what’s happened and optimistic of what’s to come. With the calendar closing on 2021, the year of “Zelda 35″ is officially done, but the horizon has never been more exciting for Zelda fans. With Breath of the Wild 2 (supposedly) releasing this year, we’ll finally have our next mainline installment that can carry the torch and run with it, while the possibilities for supporting Zelda content are seemingly endless.

As we do most years, the writing staff of Zelda Dungeon has amassed their hopes for Zelda heading into 2022 into a special feature for you to enjoy. Obviously, we all want Breath of the Wild 2 to actually release this year, but we wanted to dig a little deeper, get a little more specific, a little more granular, on what we’re hoping to see from the franchise over the next 12 months. Below are comments from each writer detailing what they want to see occur.

New games, new features, old gimmicks, returning events, and so much more — take a dive into our wildest wishes for The Legend of Zelda in 2022!

Heather Beard – A Skyward Sword Manga The Zelda manga adaptations have always been a wonderful experience to view and read. I love how they take the source material from a game and make it into a story that you’re getting to experience again. The manga adaptation of Twilight Princess is entering its climax and will soon come to an end. I always hate for a series to come to an end, but I have high hopes for another game to be adapted. Knowing that past Zelda games have been adapted into a manga format before, my wish for 2022 would be to see an announcement of another Zelda title being adapted into manga.

Many Zelda games have already been turned into all-night pager-turners, but the game I hope to see adapted most would be Skyward Sword. A Skyward Sword manga would be a great follow-up from Zelda 35 and the re-release of Skyward Sword in 2021. I think the game would translate well into text, and maybe the series would even expand on the comic that was included in Hyrule Historia? It’s probably wishful thinking for 2022, but that is my Zelda wish!

Sean Gadus – Any Kind of New 2D Zelda Game Somebody call 9-1-1! 2D Zelda is on life support! It has been almost nine years since A Link Between Worlds, the last great 2D Zelda game. While other developers have crafted exciting new 2D Zelda-inspired games like Hyper Light Drifter, Blossom Tales, and Moonlighter, Nintendo has only released a multiplayer spin-off and a remake. While Link’s Awakening was a wonderful experience, the game is rooted in a design blueprint that was created in the early 1990’s. Like 2D Metroid in the late 2000s and 2010s, Nintendo seems to be fine with resting on their laurels, letting other developers make games that scratch their fans’ itch for new experiences.

After playing the incredible Metroid Dread, my brain has been flooded with possibilities about what a new 2D Zelda game could look like, and what such a project could play like on Nintendo Switch. Nintendo is one of the most creative developers in the world; I would love to see what they (or a partner developer) could create using the Switch’s hardware. Even if Nintendo didn’t give 2D Zelda the “cutting edge” Metroid Dread treatment, a smaller scale 2D Zelda project could help the series move forward and keep the 2D side of the franchise healthy. Because right now, I can barely hear a heartbeat….

Mike Midwood – Commit to Improving the Breath of the Wild Formula My greatest hope is for an original, non-remake, 2D Zelda game. The 2D perspective isn’t actually that important to me, but it’s the only feasible way we could get a more traditional Zelda experience with Breath of the Wild’s sequel on the horizon. As much as I’m looking forward to that game, my hope is that its inevitable success doesn’t snuff out the series’ classic style of adventure. I don’t want my favorite type of exploration to be relegated to remakes.

Speaking of the sequel to Breath of the Wild, I’m hoping that Nintendo is willing to enact real changes. I really loved its predecessor, but it was a game that left a lot of obvious avenues for improvement. With a handful of tweaks and a commitment to expanding the formula’s potential, I think this could be one of the best Zelda games we’ve had in decades. My hope is that Nintendo will make this sequel truly unique and not coast on the triumphs of the original.

Chakell Herbert – Remake Ocarina of Time From the Ground Up I am one who fangirls over anything Zelda, but one particular release I constantly yearn for is a new Ocarina of Time remake for the Switch that is legitimately remade. Yes, I know that it has been given the 3D treatment on the 3DS, but I still want more! That game is a staple of the series and is what truly sucked me into the adventures of Link and Zelda when I was young, and I would love to see what new engines could do to the graphics. I would especially love to see a more emotional Link, because, let’s be honest, Ocarina of Time is one of the most emotional of the series and the Nintendo 64 just doesn’t always do the facial expressions and reactions justice with all that goes down during this iconic era in Hyrule.

I often think of the complete remake that the popular Final Fantasy VII received in recent years, and would love to see something similar done for Ocarina of Time, which is a game that defined the series. Who knows if it’ll happen! But until then, I will cross my fingers and hope that the time to shine comes once again for the Hero of Time.

Andrew Millard – Let a New Developer Tackle Zelda! Along with some of my colleagues here, I would love a new 2D Zelda game. And if Nintendo hasn’t got the time, I hope they will entrust another company to give it a shot, even if the resulting game isn’t what we think of when we think of 2D Zelda.

The Oracles games, Link’s Awakening on Switch, and Cadence of Hyrule are all proof that this works. And if I’m really hoping for something wild, let’s have that company be one of these: Capcom, Grezzo, or Mercury Steam. The sandbox of Hyrule has plenty of room for others to play with Nintendo’s toys!

Alex Weber – Two Words: Zelda. Anime. Akira Himekawa — the pen name of the writing duo responsible for the officially licensed manga adaptations of multiple Zelda games — has done great work in expanding upon video game narratives. Through combining both their artistic and storytelling abilities, they have built upon Hyrule and other locations in Zelda lore to create a rewarding experience for Zelda fans who read their manga.

Tons of anime that exist in the world are based off of an original manga, brought to life from the page through color, animation, and spoken dialogue. I would love it if Nintendo put out an anime based on the Akira Himekawa manga that already exists, particularly A Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time. I think, if done properly, it would honor the work of Akira Himekawa and subsequently add more depth to characters such as Link, who normally lacks depth as a video game protagonist built to be a clean slate.

As a proof-of-concept, not only did the cutscenes in Link’s Awakening prove the beauty in such animation, but there is also a fan animation based on the A Link to the Past manga that always makes me want to see more when I watch it, even though I’ve already read the manga for A Link to the Past. If not in 2022, I would love to see any of the Zelda manga adapted into anime somewhere along the road, as the stories told in the games and the manga definitely deserve some time in the sun! It would also be a great way to celebrate the anniversary of the series!

Michaela El-Ters – The Return of Symphony of the Goddess With COVID surging again, concerts of any kind have been a bit touch and go. But in an ideal world, COVID cases would drop to the point where concerts like Symphony of the Goddess could make a comeback. Not only would I love to attend another concert, but there’s potential for various new tracks to be added. From Cadence of Hyrule to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Symphony of the Goddesses could return in a big way with beautiful and epic orchestral renditions of melodies from newer games to keep fans on the edge of their seats!

In addition, I think there’s a way for Breath of the Wild 2 to be showcased even if the game isn’t out yet. When I went to the Kingdom Hearts concert years ago in California, music and new, exclusive video footage from the yet-to-be released Kingdom Hearts III was featured, and I think this could be a similar promotional opportunity with Breath of the Wild 2. Showcasing video footage alongside live music would make for an incredibly memorable experience while getting fans excited for the game. At least, I know I would be!

Charles Xavier – Hyrule Goes Cyberpunk I once had a dream that there was a Zelda game set in the future of Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule where we played as a Sheikah warrior. Cities had become neon lit with Sheikah technology and modernized unlike anything previously seen in the series. However, beyond the flashy lights and the bustle of city life, there still exists links to Hyrule’s past, and by investigating them, players would uncover the dark past of the Sheikah tribe. The whole game would focus around uncovering Sheikah lore and attempting to suppress any attempts by other parties to leak the information if they got to it first.

It would likely never happen, but I can hope, right? I’d love to see a reveal trailer for a new 3D Zelda game with a concept like this!

Brandon Schmitz – More amiibo Please The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD remain among the only major, first-party Wii U titles that have yet to be brought over to the Switch. Since the end of 2019, I’ve held off on re-playing either game. “This’ll be the year they hit the Switch,” I’ve said for nearly three years in a row.

Of course, most of us would love to see that come to pass in 2022. More specifically, though, I hope Nintendo commemorates their release with some unique amiibo. Admittedly, I’m not an avid collector these days — there’s just not enough space anymore! — but there are still a few Zelda-themed amiibo that are practically begging to be made. Twilight Princess HD’s Wolf Link figure is amazing, but I’d love to complement that with a stand-alone Midna amiibo. Similarly, the King of Red Lions would be the ideal candidate for Wind Waker HD. At this point, I’ve still got some space left for a few more amiibo — I’ll be saving it for those two!

Judy Calder – Tell Us Where Breath of the Wild Fits! As a lover of the official Zelda timeline, the thing I’d love to see in 2022 is Breath of the Wild’s placement within it. Whether that means placing the events of this game on a certain part of the timeline, or even using it to fuse the different branches back together again, I’d be completely satisfied.

Of course, with a new entry on the official timeline should come collectibles and merchandise! Nintendo could follow up the placement with additional material that becomes part of The Goddess Collection — something like an add-on to Hyrule Historia. As an avid collector of lore-based Zelda books (and just Zelda books/guides in general), I’d definitely thank Hylia for something like this!

David Wayne Nystrom – New Zelda Reading Material One of my favorite Zelda things that I’ve collected over the years are Zelda-related books: The Goddess Collection, guides, manga, and even that one-off Molblin’s Magic Spear (technically, that belongs to my son). With all those, I’ve also grabbed a couple titles from around the Zelda sphere, like the Ask Iwata book. What I’d like to see would be something more behind-the-scenes of the inspiration of the franchise and the people who have had a hand in creating it over the years.

A book about composer Koji Kondo, perhaps, and how he envisioned the music over the years. Maybe a retrospective from Miyamoto on his personal feelings about how the game has changed since his early visions of it. A book like that would be a really fascinating glimpse into the creativity that created Zelda and find its way to my shelf as soon as it became available.

John Piland – New Weapon Classes One of the most important aspects of a game like Zelda is combat, and more specifically, how the combat feels. Breath of the Wild introduced a few new fighting styles in two-handed heavy weapons, lances, and magical rods. Its sequel needs to build on that, and there are many ways it could. Given Link’s Crossbow Training and Linkle from Hyrule Warriors, a crossbow or an Ancient gun-like weapon would be a great way to introduce fast-paced ranged combat. A more dedicated mage class would invigorate the combat as well, going beyond the simple casting of the Wizzrobe wands. The upcoming sequel to Breath of the Wild needs to bring a new breath to combat.

David Lasby – A Third Game in the Link to the Past Saga Yes, I’m getting greedy here, but I don’t care — I’m putting this out into the universe! No game scratches the nostalgia itch more than The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The art style, the top-down gameplay, and open world in a 2D setting are everything I love about classic Zelda. Nintendo captured lightning in a bottle twice when it released The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. The game had everything I loved about the SNES classic, but with a masterful story and a truly open world.

But what’s really needed is a third and final entry into what would be the greatest set of games in the Zelda franchise. We got a spiritual sequel to A Link to the Past with A Link Between Worlds; now I want a prequel. Give me the Imprisoning War. Send Ganon’s minions back in time to stop the imprisoning before it happens and let our Hero save the day once more — The Legend of Zelda: A Link for All Time. And of course, I want this trilogy on Switch in time for the holidays. Not too big of an ask, right?

Samantha Reynolds – Game Boy Games on NSO Last year I shared my desire for a Phantom Hourglass remake for the Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, Phantom Hourglass remains a DS and Wii U exclusive, but a girl can still wish. This year, I’d like to see Nintendo add the Game Boy games to the existing Nintendo Switch Online library. I was ecstatic to have Ocarina of Time come to Switch (with Majora’s Mask being added next month), but part of me yearns for more. When I was younger, I absolutely loved Oracle of Seasons, and enjoyed playing it on my brother’s Game Boy Advance.

I was never able to get my hands on a 3DS when they were in production, and the (nearly two) decades old Game Boy Advance has been long since retired, so that leaves me with no way to enjoy Oracle of Seasons once more, or experience Oracle of Ages for the first time. Considering the trajectory in which Nintendo is introducing older games to the Online service, I’m hopeful that we will be seeing some of our favorite Game Boy games return to us.

Jill Rosado – All the Remakes! A remake of Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages, and Minish Cap! That is all I want! I was seriously hoping for this as a big announcement for Zelda‘s 35th Anniversary and personally I felt disappointed. Link’s Awakening for the Switch is absolutely exciting to play, and I would love to see these games in similar style. While I don’t expect these Game Boy games to be released this year, I’m still hoping Nintendo blesses us with news that these games will be remade. Until then, I will continue praying and manifesting for these remakes!

Alexis Anderson – More of Zelda from Smash Ultimate Please I want to see the Zelda from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in a major Zelda title. The design of Zelda in the newest Smash game is perfection. I tell everyone I play with how big a fan I am of her, and I need to see her get some more room to breathe. Give her a game! Her design is heavily inspired by Zelda from A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds, but those games’ respectively pixelate and cartoon-ize the Zelda from their concept art while Super Smash Bros. makes her a 3D reality. I would not be mad at a true 3D remake of A Link to the Past even though A Link Between Worlds scratched that itch for many. But in line with some of my colleagues’ wishes, lets remake The Minish Cap but in 3D with this Zelda. Even then I fear she wouldn’t get enough screen time. So, bottom line: I’m hoping for a spinoff featuring my favorite girl. “Super Princess Zelda,” much?

Andrew Gray – Just Keep Moving During all of 2020, while Nintendo was celebrating our favorite red-dressing plumber’s 35th anniversary, I couldn’t help but wonder if they would do something similar for our favorite green-clad elf for his 35th the following year. Now that the year has closed, and we did see the Game & Watch release, I was honestly a little let down from my own expectations.

I am always happy to get new Zelda material. I love this series, and I wanted a special 35th anniversary from Nintendo because I wanted to see the franchise celebrated at large as much as I cherish it myself. That said, my request is frankly simple: Keep the franchise moving. Add, grow, keep doing what makes Zelda great and I will be happy. Even if nothing released with the franchise at all this year, I won’t be let down so long as this amazing franchise keeps going strong for years to come.

Rod Lloyd – Re-Release Four Swords Anniversary Edition… Permanently This Time In 2011, as part of The Legend of Zelda‘s 25th anniversary, Nintendo released Four Swords Anniversary Edition, an expanded remaster of the original Game Boy Advance title, exclusively on DSiWare. Beyond improved visuals and additional areas, Anniversary Edition also featured a new and surprisingly meaty single-player mode that, in my opinion, helped promote Four Swords from a GBA novelty to a must-play title for Zelda hardcores. But for all its positives, the tragedy of Four Swords Anniversary Edition lies in the fact that it was only available for a limited time before disappearing completely, brought back only once for a limited release on the 3DS eShop in 2014.

As a vocal defender of Four Swords Anniversary Edition, I would love to see Nintendo release the title once again on the Nintendo Switch in 2022, especially as the original Four Swords will be celebrating its 20th birthday later this year. The game’s multiplayer gameplay would certainly benefit from the Nintendo Switch Online service, removing a huge barrier to entry present with the Game Boy Advance and 3DS multiplayer infrastructures. Additionally, I want to see Four Swords Anniversary Edition stay available permanently; no more limited edition nonsense. In that way, we’ll be one step closer to the Switch being the definitive Zelda machine.

Andy Spiteri – NFT’s? No F** Thank You What more needs to be said here? I can’t really see Nintendo doing this, but stranger things have happened, so I’m just putting this energy out into the universe: keep those garbage NFT’s away from Zelda and away from Nintendo. One of the biggest fads of 2021 is the rise of NFT’s, and it’s also one of the worst. With multiple art thefts, the brutal effects on the climate, the general pyramid-scheme architecture of the NFT game, this would be an awful look on my favorite series.

We’ve seen companies like Konami, Ubisoft, Sega, and more jump aboard the NFT train, and while my heart tells me Nintendo has more class than that, I’ve been hurt before. Keep Zelda away from NFT’s for the love of all things holy — if you want to sell me some Zelda .jpegs, at least put them in a nice book.

That’s our thoughts on what we’d like to see for our beloved franchise in the new year, but we want to know what YOU think! Let us know in the comments below!

We’re back for another week with a very special episode, one that we’ve been looking forward to for a while: analyzing the world, characters, and themes of Studio Ghibli’s 1997 masterpiece Princess Mononoke and seeing how that movie made a lasting impressing on the Zelda series, and Breath of the Wild in particular. We compare Link and Ashitaka, Zelda and San, Lady Eboshi and the citizens of Irontown to the fabled Sheikah clan, analyze the similar themes of nature versus technology, and even look to the plot of Princess Mononoke to deduce where we might be headed in Breath of the Wild 2.

Come get sweat away with us, and PLUS – we reveal our big episode 200 plans! Come and hang out, and if you haven’t ever seen it, or maybe it’s been a while, do yourself a favor and watch Princess Mononoke this week!

I am a big, big fan of 80’s inspired synthwave music. Something about the way the music conveys a sense nostalgia while at the same time manage to sound futuristic is something that’s always hooked me about that style of music. Perhaps it’s that futuristic slant that serves as the reason why you don’t hear it in a ton of Nintendo games, however, which I’ve always thought is a shame, as when Nintendo has used electronic, synthy music in its games, it’s been awesome (see Prime, Metroid). Admittedly, that style of music I think has to somewhat match the esthetic of the game, but I ask you this: with Zelda, and in particular Breath of the Wild, moving towards a more futuristic presentation with its Guardian swords, Sheikah sates, Divine Beasts and what have you, would electronic synth music fit in Zelda going forward?

Before you scoff, there are tunes in Breath of the Wild already that bare somewhat of a semblance to synthwave music, notably the Shrine themes and especially the Monk Maz Koshia theme (which, by the way? Certified banger). With the themes of technology and it’s misuse looking to keep playing a role in subsequent Zelda games, I’ve love to know: would you be open to hearing a different type of music in Zelda? Or would electronic synth be too much?
