"Holy Week" is the Time to be in Church!
It's not quite Easter, but this weekend already marks a "holiday" that is worth celebrating and making sure you get to church!
"Holiday" is simply short for "holy day." Through the course of a year there are certain days we set apart as special or “holy”: to commemorate extraordinary events, to celebrate influential individuals, etc. On such holy days the relentless march of time slows down, and we set aside our usual routines to call attention to whatever or whoever makes that day special.
There are many “holy days”, but there is only one “holy week”. The final week of Lent marks the most pivotal week in human history. In the four gospels—each of which serves as a biography of Jesus’ life 33 year-old life—this single week consumes a third of their ink. That’s how important this week was, and that’s why we slow down for an entire week to ponder all that Christ did for us from his humble entrance into Jerusalem... to his sacrifical death on the cross... to the victory of Easter morning!
This week especially, make sure you join us in church. We start our celebration with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday (April 10th) at 10am. We will then remember Jesus' sacrificial death on the cross in our Holy Week Festival Service at 7pm on Thursday, April 14th, complete with Lord's Supper. Finally, we will joyfully recall the victory of Jesus' resurrection with our Easter Sunday service at 10am on Sunday, April 17th. (We will also have our annual Easter brunch and egg hunt after our Easter Sunday service. If you're able to stay, consider bringing a brunch dish to share!)
There is no better time during the church year to invite friends and family to church, so consider who in your life needs the good news of Jesus, and invite them to come celebrate this "holy week holiday" with us!
Last Fall I was lulled unto thinking that my property taxes would not go up or would go up very little. That was because all news outlets were feed that line from the County. Well the rate may not have gone up but our property values via assessment jumped up by 10% or more! You don't have to sit idly by, you can challenge the appraisal and it's not to hard to do.
There is always a lot going on in Minot, especially on the weekends. I wouldn't even think of trying to cover them all BUT I will tell you about the ones that actually interest me. Check out my two choices for the 1st weekend in April. Thanks!
Here is a book for everyone including those with attention deficit orders like myself. ORDINARY LIFE - EXTRAORDINARY GOD!is a collection of short stories that will keep you reading from cover to cover. I like short stories and non of these are more than a couple of pages. Each story will leave you wanting more. It was nice to visit with Helen "live" as I have been reading here column in the Minot Daily News for many years.
From Broadcast to Podcast. I've decided that the riggers of a broadcast is more then I care to handle these days. It's been a fun run for the last six years but I'm tired of it so it's time to move on to many other things as I describe here in my final over the air radio broadcast.

The Mayor had a lot to say and a lot was shocking. #1 to me is that the Norsk Hostfest is cancelled this year. The Norsk Hostfest is an international celebration that brings millions of dollars into our community. My biggest personal concern is "will Minot have a graduation ceremony this year".
Jason and Cassidy Skjervem (pronounced Sure-vom)are the Area Directors of CRU and CRU is the force that is bringing Russ Taft to Minot for a concert Monday May 11th.
CRU is an interdenominational Christian parachurch organization for college and university students. It was founded in 1951
at the University of California, Los Angeles by Bill Bright and Vonette Zachary Bright. Since then, Cru has expanded its focus to include adult professionals, athletes, and high school students.

Scott Burlingame is true leader in Minot's nonprofit community. Scott has served on numerous boards, coalitions, and is currently Vice President of The Minot Nonprofit Alliance. All this while executing flawlessly his real job as Executive Director of Independence Inc (a nonprofit that helps those with health issues).
Scott is truly a man with a heart to help others and now he would like to help the entire City of Minot using his skills and compassion as a member of Minot's City Council. Knowing the amazing things Scott has done with tight budgets he gets my vote.

I meet Nate a couple of months ago after grilling him about his faith. I liked his answers so I visited his place of work and found that I fit in perfectly (although I'm the oldest man there). I'm talking about Reverend Nathan Walters, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Wisconsin Synod.
Listen in. I hope your biggest take-away from this is that the term "conservative" Christian does not have a political connotation nor does it mean we are holly-roller Bible thumpers looking for people to hit over the head with a Bible.

Victor and I are friends through Toastmasters 636 in Minot ND and we have extended our friendship through mutual friends/get together s, and our love of all things technology (although he's a lot smarter then I am.

Minot Mayor Shaun Sipma and I visit about a couple of the components our City is currently dealing with in regards to the NDR (National Disaster Resilientsy)program. This program is very complicated and jumping through all the hoops HUD requires is a real eye opener.

It was not until I attended my 1st meet this year that I found out what really goes on at those Toastmaster meetings. My best friend Jerry Kaup shares how he makes his road trips more enjoyable. Jerry does a lot of traveling and he will go out of his way if he reads a good dinning review. Much to my surprise these off the beaten path excursions are seldom expensive and according to Jerry they are always delicious. I think you will enjoy hearing of his experiences and how he has always been satisfied with the results of his research.
Wiring is one of those things you want to "get right" in your home.Most people are wise enough to let the professionals do the electrical work but there are some do-it-yourselfers who are daring enough to do their own electrical work as well. That's fine... as long as you let the City Electrical Inspector take a look. John O. French is an electrical inspector for the City of Minot and he wants to help you get it right as well. He would be happy to take a look at your plan and let you know what will and won't work. Everybody wants a safe home, especially John.
Nick Dryer and I talk about the Our Saviors Lutheran Church Mercy Care program and it's intent. Mercy Care and a program I developed called The Noodle Ministry have joined together to provide Ramon Noodles to indigent prisoners at the Ward County Correctional facility. Brock Weppler is an Assistant Director of MSU Athletics-Development AND Brock is also the Director of the Beaver Booster Club. Brock is an amazing local boy who has done a fantastic job for our local University, Minot State.
Brock has been with the Beaver Booster program for 14 years and the Assistant Director of Athletics-Development for over 3 years.
Brock is one of the most upbeat positive people I know and it's no surprise to me, I've known his mom for years and she is President of St. Joseph's Community Health Foundation as well as a Ward County Commissioner.

Gene Miller has owned MBM Auto in Minot ND for over 40 years. He knows European cars! This small shop in Minot has a BIG reputation for quality work for those who drive European vehicles. I love visiting with Gene. When we do interviews I feel like I'm part of "Click & Clack", what a great show that was! Listen in. With only 15 minutes I had to cut out a lot of the joking but it's still a very fun interview.
Andy and I have never been able to contain our conversations to the 15 minutes of air time allowed for the Minot Today Radio program. Our last conversation followed that past pattern BUT we did actually manage to get it down to two programs. Here is part two of two of our latest conversation.
When Andy and I get together it's had to put the breaks on our conversation at the 15 minute mark that I'm allotted over the air. Andy's enthusiasm always gets me going. I'm sure it's that enthusiasm that super motivates his coaching staff and players. I find Andy to be a true "motivational" speaker. I'm sure you too will think this is one of the fastest 15 minutes you've spent listening to Minot Today.

Dr. Christina Paxman is an Assistant Professor of Broadcasting and Professional Communication. She specializes in Public Relations and Communication and has taught 30 different courses across the span of her career. Some of Christina’s current classes include PR Campaigns & Strategies, Communication Law & Ethics, Gender Communication, and Advanced Public Speaking. Much of Christina’s teaching is complemented by her experience in the private sector, including the time she spent working at Walt Disney World and, later, for a multinational aerospace corporation.
Christina routinely incorporates Service Learning opportunities into her classes so students can partner with local organizations to gain professional experience and make connections to course material. As such, students have helped plan and promote events, launch and manage social media campaigns, and serve as novice communication consultants for a variety of organizations.
Christina’s research has been published in a variety of scholarly journals, including Communication Teacher, Communication Research Reports, Journal of Family Communication, Women & Health, and Environment & Behavior. Additionally, the results of a team study that Christina worked on were cited in a Wall Street Journal article titled “New Help for Homesick Students on Campus”.
Christina currently serves as the Editor for the Journal of Communication, Speech & Theatre Association of North Dakota, which recently received the 2019 Outstanding Journal Award from the Central States Communication Association.
It's hard to miss the Dakota Boy's & Girl's Ranch Thrift Store on Broadway but it's easy to be unaware of the GREAT work they support. This organization has made a positive difference in a countless number of young men's and women's lives. Take 14 minutes to learn about this amazing ministry and how you can be a part of it.
Rarely do I walk into a storefront and am "Wowed" but I sure was by POEM of Minot. I was greeted by @James Adams who gave me a full tour and it didn't take long to realize that POEM and James were both amazing. It's no wonder however as James clued me in on the brains behind POEM. Please listen in, I believe you will be surprised at the story James tells.
Dru Pelfrey is very knowledgeable about his field of Cosmetology and Barbering. He runs a great shop in downtown Minot called Peoples Choice Salon & Fashion. He has made Minot home for he and his family and being he is at the top of his game he's looking for ways to step up to the next level. I'm proud to say that Dru is another downtown Minot neighbor of mine and now I can say friend as well. Listen and learn!
Bruce Walker is the Broker/Owner of 1st Minot Realty, Inc. Coldwell
Banker 1st Minot Realty has been
assisting buyers and sellers in the Minot area since 1955. While Bruce has not been there the whole time he has been there a good chunk of the time.
Having left a career in education as both a teacher and an administrator he started with
Coldwell Banker in 1973.
Some of Bruce's past achievements
include: In 1989 he was named Minot Realtor of the Year. In 1993 he was named Builder of the Year by the Minot Association of Builders, as well as State Builder of the Year by the North Dakota Association of Builders. In 1999 Bruce received the Golden Hammer Award for outstanding support for Habitat for Humanity. In 2003 he received the Golden Award for recognition of distinguished
service to Minot State University.
All of this and I can say that Bruce is one of the nicest guys I know. I am very proud to be one of Bruce's friends and thrilled to have been able to do this interview with him.

Evette Melbe founded and runs Hopes House, an addiction treatment center. Hopes house is the only center in Minot with an on site addiction councilor and the only treatment center that requires it's patients to go through the program straight.
I loved this interview and I think you will too. Of the four treatment centers in Minot Hope's House is truly unique.
I was first introduced to Farm Rescue several years ago by the known as News Broadcaster Shaun Sipma (now know as Minot's Mayor, Shaun Sipma. KHRT and your truly, Bob Timm, have had the pleasure of interview Mayor Sipma more times then any other news outlet.
Shaun and I talk about Farm Rescues birth, mission, and current status as well as mentioning that the North Dakota State Fair Parade will be lead this year by the founder of Farm Rescue, Bill Gross.

Just what does a Sheriff and the Sheriff's office do? My guest today is Ward County Sheriff Robert (Bob) Roed and he does a great job of filling us in. Had I heard this interview when I was a young man I just may have made being a Deputy or the Sheriff my career choice.
The TRINITY HEALTH FOUNDATION is an amazing organization
that gives so much to the region surrounding the Greater
Minot ND area. Al Evon,foundation director, shares many
of the aspects of the foundation with us in this brief
14 minute interview. Last year the foundation approved
101 proposals for funding various projects in the area
granting $523,285.81 to those projects.In addition to
those various proposals funded through out the region
expended $823,509.03 to improve health and wellness.
Another $300,223.22 was used to directly fund other
programs and services. I learned so much from Al's visit
and the Trinity Health Foundation Annual Report which is
available to anyone upon request.

I'm 65 years old so my first question to Dean was how old is to old to financially plan for retirement. Dean, a Financial Advisor, did a wonderful job of explaining why you are never to old to get your financial assets in order.

If you were to ask me who is Minot's most enterprising woman it would be an impossible task but Val Stadick would be right at the top of the list. Val started Main Street Books with some used books,a loan from her husband, and a lot of determination. Today Main Street books is one of the most popular stores in the City of Minot and I dare say even a draw to Minot ND. Val is an inspiration to anyone who has nothing but a dream and the determination to make that dream come true.

Stephanie Baze is the General Manager of the Clarion Hotel & Convention Center in Minot North Dakota and I learned a lot about my neighbor in this interview. I live about a half a mile from the Clarion and never knew it is the largest convention center in the State of North Dakota that is attached to a hotel. I also learned that I need to get 19 of my friends together and go order prime rib at the Clarion.

Talk about FUN! That's exactly what Savanna and I do and just talking to Savanna was a lot of fun too. I think it's great that Collegiate Baseball is back in Minot for another year. As a neighbor to Corbett Field I can tell you that it used to be that I'd see about 20 people in the seats at Corbett field UNTIL The Sabre Dogs showed up. Now when the dogs play it's not unusual to see 1,000 people in the stands. What a thrill to see our Historic ball park come back to life! This is the kind of thrill our parents and grand parts got many years ago in Minot ND. This is FAMILY fun! It may be hard to believe but Corbett Field has become "Thee" hot spot for teen as well as the whole family for the summer.
If you think rock art is Velvet Elvis or weird album covers you need a little educating from Linda Olson, Professor of Studio Arts at Minot State University. I could not believe how fast the time went on this subject. Linda tells us about some local (ND rock) at and more. BTW the proper names for rock art are petroglyph (art carved into rock), pictograph (art painted unto rock), and petroform or geoglyph (art made from rock). We also talk about fiber arts. Again, just to clarify, fiber arts involve fiber... not fiber optics.

Linda Olson has a GREAT eye for art and loves to teach art to students of all ages. She is close to retiring as a professor at Minot State University but even when she does retire she won't be giving up her favorite art, the ceramic arts, or teaching (as she has just built a beautiful studio off of her home so she can continue her work). Karen Hamilton and Jackie Harvey have teamed up to open "The Clogging Place" in Minot ND. Karen & Jackie were part of a performance team in Minot and when the leader of that team started talking about closing down the team they decided that Clogging must live on in Minot.
Karen & Jackie want to teach the art and fun of clogging with the emphasis on FUN and not on being part of a performance team.
The Clogging Place is located at 1401 4th Street SW Minot in the lower level of the Living Waters Family Worship Center.
Clogging is not to hard to learn, not even for a old guy like me, and it's a fantastic cardio workout. I'm going to give it a try just to help me loose a few of the extra pounds I gained this winter (however the girls said they are conveniently located a half a block from the DQ).

Kay Eaton left the nursing field 20 years ago to start a Christian book store. With no retail experience she learned as she went along... including the fact that a Christian book store ought to have Bibles on the shelf. Gideon's Trumpet is a favorite with our family (and not just because our daughter worked for Kay). Gifts from Gideon's trumpet are special because they reflect our faith and our family is based on our faith in God.
Weekends just don't get any BIGGER than this coming March 16th and 17th in Minot ND. 3 BIG events that will surely fill all the Hotel/Motel rooms and pack the restaurants over the weekend.
1) The Boys Class B Basketball Tournament is in town. About 95% of North Dakota's schools fall into the class B category. Students, parents, close relatives and those 20 times removed will be coming to Minot for this tournament.
2) The Abrahamson Rodeo & Rodeo School will be in town for Magic City Madness. Ye Ha! What a great time for participants, observers, and photographers like myself.
3) Volleyball! Minot Rec Commissions 29 Annual Volleyball Tournament. The biggest open volleyball tournament in the State will be here this weekend as well. These are NOT school teams, these are open teams much like the Mcquade softball tournament in Bismark ND. Men's teams, women's teams, and mixed teams are set to play. Come enjoy.
A year ago, nearly to the day, we visited with Steve Carbino of Goodwill/Easter Seals about what was new at the Goodwill Thrift Store. There was a lot new then and there is even more now. Take 15 minutes to the exciting news about this non-profit ministry.

Even though we had equipment problems during our interview with PATH a couple of weeks ago we did continue to record. It took me a couple of weeks to get the audio we did have in an acceptable condition for radio broadcast. It's really to bad that one of the guests audio was unusable as there was a lot of good material in what he said as a new foster parent. WOW! What a GREAT interview! I am so impressed with Andy Carter I know I'm going to be talking about this interview for years to come.
This coming Friday's radio interview on Minot Real Estate Today is with 14 year old Oscar, 3 year veteran of the business world. Hear how an 11 year old went from a corner lemonade stand to a company with 2 vehicles and 11 employees. This year Oscar will be a High School Freshman and next year he may even have a drivers license so he can drive one of the vehicles he owns.
This interview took place "on site" at the Ward County Historical Society with Bryan Goetch, Site Director. Brian is an excellent example of how the Minot Air Force Base benefits the greater Minot Area by bringing such high quality young people to our community who often stay after serving our country and raise their families here. After serving our country for 8 years (retiring as a Staff Sargent) Bryan attended Minot State University and graduated with a major in history and a minor in English.

If you like antiques and collectibles you should be in love with The Downtown Mall. The Downtown Mall is located at 108 Main Street South. Owner Gene Brinkman has been a collector since his youth as he learned from his father who also collected and sold old and interesting artifacts. The items at the Downtown Mall come from all over the world but mostly from our area (North Dakota) and from the deep South of Texas where Gene and his Bride live during the winter months. Gene is very quick witted, coupled with the fact he is a close friend, I had to leave a lot of tape on the editing floor to squeeze this interview into the 15 minutes of air time allowed by the radio station that plays Minot Real Estate Today. Although the intent of this list is to improve a home for resale these items are also things that will enhance your enjoyment of the home you wish to live in for many years to come. It may surprise some that only ONE improvement will add value to your home. A second improvement will break even cost wise and the last suggestion will only show a 10% return (90% of your cost will not be recouped). So why make these improvements? Because if you want to sell your house it will be far down the line of choices as Buyers look at similar properties that did make the improvements.

This nonprofit daycare for children under the age of 6 is so popular that they have a waiting list of a year and a half. When you hear Karla Ross talk about her passion for children you will know why there is such a long waiting period.
