Inspiration Beautiful soundtracks of memorable films have always been an inspiration to my Unwind mixes. This mix features quite a few, including a recent one that inspired this mix which is “Going to the Country” by Dhani Harrison & Paul Hicks, taken from a great film called “Learning to Drive“.
I’ve also created a brand new mashup of a song called “Sea Fog” from one of my favorite British bands, Keane, and another from the legendary Rock musician Mike Oldfield called “I Give Myself Away”. The two songs were a match made in heaven and I couldn’t help it. It took about 5 hours but definitely worth it.

Inspiration

I recently stumbled upon a website called 16personalities. It lets you take a personality test to get a description of who you are and why you do things the way you do. I’m usually wary of such sites that claim to do so, especially if they’re not scientifically grounded. Not this one though. Hesitant, I went ahead and took the 10-minutes test. The result was a complete profile of my personality, tendencies and motivations. To say that what I read was “freakishly accurate” is an understatement. And it’s not the kind of generic stuff that can work for everybody; it’s as if someone had been accurately observing my thoughts, feelings, and actions all my life and had a better talent of putting all that into words.
The reason I mention this is that reading into my profile (which by the way is the INFJ Personality, commonly called “The Advocate”), I now completely understand my motivations for making these mixes for you guys. I used to explain the reason I spend all these hours is because I enjoy the creative process of a hobby that fills my time, but it turns out it goes deeper than that.
In fact, my personality is the kind of one that has inborn sense of idealism and morality. We are dreamers who are still capable of taking concrete steps to realize our goals and make a lasting positive impact. This has been the underlying thread that made me start this project in the first place. My intention has always been to harness the power of music into mixes that somehow makes you feel better and let’s you have a more positive outlook in life.
This mix is all about that.

Inspiration While I have produced some upbeat, fun Unwind Chillout mixes in the past (Vol 6, Vol 16, Vol 25), with this mix I wanted to go a little further in the Lounge genre and create a mix that’s mostly all about fun beats and happy, foot-tapping melodies.
It’s a major departure from the Unwind formula you are used to in the past, but I’m very interested in what you think about this possible direction for creating similar future Unwind mixes. Let me know in the comments.

Inspiration This mix was inspired by the the 5th track (More Than Nothing), and is centered around our desire to sometimes “turn back the hands of the clock” and do something we missed out on doing. Even though the song describes a man’s regret for not pursuing a relationship, I’d like to think of this idea more generically to include everything we procrastinate or never get to do that we later wish we would have done, or at least tried! The lesson here is that we can’t possibly predict all the things that will come our way. That’s why we should adopt a bias towards action and a tolerance towards failure.
Musically, this mix was by far the most time-consuming 1-hour mix I’ve ever created! It almost burnt me out trying to perfect all aspects of the mix, especially the first mashup, track 13, which is made up of two equally amazing songs by DeYarmond Edison and All India Radio.

Inspiration I often get asked why I keep putting time and energy into crafting these mixes. For some time, the answer has eluded me and all I can think of is “everyone’s gotta have a hobby, right?”. But lately, I’ve tried to pay attention to the motivations that get me to set down for one of those hours-long mixing sessions and the kind of feelings I get throughout one.
And then it hit me!
Besides my love for this kind of music, there’s an enormous pleasure and sense of pride that I derive from 1) discovering two equally amazing and complementary songs with similar notes and 2) meticulously mixing them in a way that is so seamless you would think they are “long lost friends that have finally found each other”, as DJTechTools resoundingly puts it.
In no previous mix is this clearer than this one. Starting on track 7, I’ve overlaid track 8 at a halfway point, and did a similar thing with track 9. Finally, track 10 is a wonderful little mashup of two “long lost friends” that just makes sense rhythmically and lyrically.
I’m just very proud of this mix and I hope you enjoy it too.

Inspiration This mix marks a milestone: it’s the premier mix for my Unwind Chillout monthly show on friskyRadio, which airs every 2nd Sunday of the month at 11AM EST / 7PM KSA (GMT +3) starting July 12, 2015. This is the first ever radio residency for me! I’m quite honored with the words they chose to promote my residency and the Unwind show.
Unwind mixes have always been known to stretch the Chillout genre in interesting new directions, focusing solely on uplifting and melodic music that induces a feel-good vibe through “enlightening sound that carries a message and elevates all those who listen”, as friskyRadio eloquently puts it.
But in creating this mix, I thought about what being on the radio means for the artistic direction of this show. Do I play what people tuning in to a “Chill” channel typically expect to hear? or do I keep the same mixing philosophy that inspired Unwind mix series to start with, which I wrote about in a recent mix.
Funny enough, it turns out that the first track to this mix, which was recommended by a friend of mine, was the inspiration I needed to overcome this kind of “stage fright”. Unwind mixing philosophy is the reason I have reached this milestone, and it will be continue to fuel these mixes for the future to come.

Inspiration “Promise of New Beginnings Among Old Endings”, a beautiful upbeat track by the talented Chillout/Ambient producer Fort Road, has inspired me to create a mix themed around man’s deep-rooted desire to be free from oppression and be in control of his own destiny.
I worked on this mix for a while, and I was so pleased with how it turned out that I withheld self-releasing it in favor of a more prominent release on a popular radio channel. To my delight, the popular friskyRadio CHILL channel has quite liked it and decided to promote it as a guest mix on their long-running Chillout Sundays show. A week ago (7/6/2015), the mix aired to an overwhelming positive response that it received friskyRadio’s Staff Pick and a prominent display in the homepage.
What’s more is that friskyRadio has approached me for an exclusive contract to release all future episodes of my Unwind mix series on their CHILL channel in a monthly show. It’s an incredible feeling to finally get a worldwide stage for my mixes and a chance to reach bigger audience of people who appreciate this kind of melodic and positive Chillout/Ambient music.

Inspiration Around this time last year, a guest mix I did for a one of my favorite Chillout radio shows, Undiscovered Scenery, went live. Mario Trunz, who runs this monthly show, had graciously accepted my proposal to be on his show. It was one of the best episodes I did in my Unwind Chillout mix series, and I’m happy to do it again this year.
This mix seamlessly treads the waters of few different genres under the Chillout umbrella, featuring some amazing highlights such as the powerful voice of Kelly Sweet in Superhuman and the lovely theme song I picked up after watching Clint Eastwood’s film Gran Torino.

Inspiration “Never change”, a line from the 5th track in this mix, really sums up what I feel about mixing this kind of music and the compelling drive that always pulls me back to do more of these mixes, no matter how busy life gets.
I started this project back in 2011, and my philosophy hasn’t and will not change: it’s always been about tracks I personally absolutely love, regardless of how contemporary or classic they are. This is most evident in this mix, where I combine new favorites such as “Fluke” by Fort Road with classic Chillout tracks such as “Out There” by Masters & Nickson.
Here’s to a great start for a new year. Hope yours is filled with good times and happy memories.

Inspiration Mixcloud is chockfull of great Chillout and Ambient shows that I’ve recently had the pleasure of discovering. Among them is Cham’o popular ‘Dunia’ show, which features finely selected music in ambient, downtempo and lounge genres. I really like the atmosphere of this show that I wanted to be part of it, and Cham’o graciously accepted to feature my guest mix in his show.
This mix adopts a somewhat mellow tune themed around city life in the night time. I’ve tried to keep this mix more or less instrumental, so as to let the listener make out what he / she feels the mix to be about. You’ll hear an interesting blend of ambient and downtempo tunes, both from classical recordings (such as Brian Eno & Harold Budd’s “An Arc Of Doves” released in 1980) to contemporary Chillout and New Age records such as Jon Hopkins’ “Luna Moth”, released in 2010.
One artist I would like to highlight in this mix is Keith Kenniff, an American composer, multi-instrumentalist, and electronic music producer whose music has been featured many times in past “Unwind” mixes under the monikers of Helios, Goldmund, and his actual name. He’s actually featured 3 times in this mix. Something about his style of production just makes me perfect sense to me and I can’t help but feature him time and time again in my mixes. I encourage you all to check out and buy his records if you like them as much as I do.

Inspiration This mix, inspired by the Epic45 track “The Future Is Blinding”, is themed around feeling content with what we have and finding happiness within. I’m sure that many of us, including me, get stuck in a vicious cycle of wanting something really bad which we think will make us happy, and pursuing it tirelessly until we attain it. Once we do, and we’ve adapted to it, the cycle starts again with something else that keeps us on our toes, forgetting to cherish the life we have for that “one thing that will make us happy”.
Musically, this mix features two tracks from an artist I recently discovered and fell instantly in love with the simplicity and beauty of his music: Umber. Other highlights include a wonderful new track from ATB’s latest 2014 album “Contact”, and a excellent Chillout mix of “Desire”, a Trance tune by Evan London, remixed by no other than the amazing duet Domenico Cascarino & Luca Lombardi.

Inspiration This is a guest mix on DI.FM long running chillout radio show ‘Solitudes‘ hosted by Martin Grey. I personally love his show and the style of the music featured on his show, so if you like Unwind mixes chances are you will like ‘Solitudes’ mixes too.
While Unwind (Vol 12) was previously themed around being in solitude (and how good that can be to you every once in a while), I also wanted this mix to have the same kind of “secluded” mellow style as the first one. It features several tracks from different films that I enjoyed watching, including The Pursuit Of Happyness, Trance and The Crimson Wing / Mystery of the Flamingos.

Inspiration Now that I have released 20 high quality ‘unwind’ mixes, I have decided that I have what it takes to get out there and guest mix on other popular chillout shows. I have approached Mario Trunz who used to run the “Colorful Skies” chillout show, and now runs the “Undiscovered Scenery” show, and he graciously accepted to feature this mix on his show. Really nice and talented guy, I encourage you to check out his music.
This mix is inspired by Reuben Halsey’s track “Where The Heart Is”, which gives a clue to a very profound question that I personally relate to: where is home? Having been born and living all my life away from my home country and traveling quite often, I have had my days when I questioned where really do I belong. Nevertheless, recently I’ve been coming to terms with the idea that maybe it’s not all about the geography, but about who you’re with, the kind of rights you’re entitled to, and quality of life that you can potentially enjoy. Maybe a combination of those factors will make a foreign country feel like home. Maybe there are others. What do you think?

Inspiration This mix is released on Earth Day of 2013, and is inspired by the second track, “Gamemaster” and these imaginative words:

Good For I’ve chosen an overall mellow and dreamy mood for this mix, which you will especially enjoy if you listen to it from start to finish in one go. It’s a relaxing mix so be sure to eliminate distractions before you put it on.

Inspiration One of my all-time favorite Chillout music producers, Ryan Farish, has coined a term that describes exactly the kind of Chillout music I like to listen to and mix: Positive Chillout. I’ve used this style of music extensively in past ‘Unwind’ mixes, and this release is just as “positively chilled” as the others. What’s new in this release, however, is that I’ve started experimenting with heavier edits on tracks I use. The reason for this is to keep the mix interesting and appropriately vary the mood of the mix by cutting some tracks short and letting other tracks run their full length. Another reason for this is to set myself apart from other similar DJs who might simply put together a quick Chillout mix by fading in/out some 14 tracks to make up an hour of music.
Good For While this mix does not explore any particular theme, it does have an overall positive, fun and mostly upbeat mood to it, especially in its first half. The second half gradually progresses into more mellow atmosphere that ends beautifully with 3 of A. R. Rahman’s amazing tracks taken from the soundtrack of “People Like Us” 2012 film. Overall, I’d say the mix is great for times when you’re feeling happy and content and you want to listen to music that reinforces this mood.

Inspiration About 8 months ago, I produced Volume 4 of the Unwind mix series, themed around my fascination of being able to spacewalk and see the world from far above. This is certainly not an easy feat for any of us to accomplish, but someone recently was able to experience a glimpse of that feeling. I’m talking, of course, about Felix Baumgartner, whose 36.5 km jump from space inspired me to create this mix to honor his supersonic world record and try to imagine, with music, what it must have felt like when the capsule door opened, revealing the glorious Earth right before his eyes.

Inspiration One of my favorite albums in the Unwind series, which also happens to be my most popular one on Mixcloud, is Unwind (Vol 3). For this 13th volume, to celebrate 10 amazing releases since Vol 3, I decided to create sort of a similar downtempo mix with heavy influence from Classical music. This volume also contains, for the first time ever, a Middle Eastern composition by Egyptian composer Amr Ismail.

Inspiration Relationships are tough deals. They’re never easy rides. Just when we think we’ve learned enough, they turn around and throw us a curveball that tips us off our balance and makes us question some fundamental truths about our relationships.

Inspiration I can’t believe it was only little over 7 months ago that I formally began this musical project of mine with the first volume in the Unwind mix series. I was on a vacation at the time and I had this epiphany that since I had built up this awesome collection of high-quality music, why not share with the world the best tunes that I loved through meticulously crafted mixes that complemented certain moods or emotions.
I didn’t know at the time how far I would go with this newfound hobby of mine or how much I would learn along the way. Now here I am celebrating my 10th volume in this series (and 16th overall mix). I’ve tremendously enjoyed creating each and every single one of them with utmost care and perfection. It also gave me an appreciation of how much work goes into crafting a high-quality mix that immerses the listeners in a magnificent listening experience.

Inspiration About a month ago, people around the world, including me, witnessed what was thought as the impossible. A video posted on YouTube that went viral quickly showed a Dutch man, named Floris Kaayk, succeeding at flying on his own with custom-built wings. No motors, no jet pack. We were all so excited about finally realizing man’s lifelong dream to fly like a bird that we failed to question the true mechanics of this guy’s claimed flight. Indeed, it turned out to be one big hoax of CGI play.
Aside from the disappointment everyone had, I still pondered what it felt like to really fly, even for a tiny bit. Naturally, I also thought about what kind of music I would play once I’m up there with the birds. And so I created this mix.

Inspiration In this latest mix in the ‘Unwind’ series, I wanted to explore slightly more upbeat and happy melodies in the Chillout, Jazz, Swing and Blues genres. The end result is a delightful mix of some truly awesome and unique tracks, including my single all-time favorite Chillout tune, “Bluebird of Happiness”.
Good For You’ll love to start your day with this mix, I know I did. It starts nice and easy with mellow chillout tunes in the first half, but then progressively changes into upbeat ‘swinging’ style in the second half, which I really had a fun time mixing. Finally, it ends on a high note with Keb’ Mo’s inspirational yet fun song “Everybody Be Yoself”.

Inspiration Me and Ayman
This mix perfectly showcases exactly why my mixes are unique, which is the inclusion of songs from different genres that are amazing on their own yet they complement each other to serve the overall mood and theme of the mix.
My very first demo mix ‘Cheer Up’ had this song by Dido called ‘See the Sun’. Ayman, my little 9 years brother, loved that song and ever since I took that mix apart into other mixes, he’d always ask why isn’t that song mixed in. So I’d like to dedicate this one to him for being an inspiration when I was just starting up.
Good For While it can be played anytime you want to chill out and have fun, it’s best suited for morning times. There’s a lot of inspiration here on being optimistic, seizing the day and thinking good thoughts that good things are coming your way.

Inspiration The ultimate place to relax and reflect is without a doubt up in zero-gravity space. There’s something about seeing the world, this whole planet, from a distance that makes you see how small we are, and how everything is connected to a larger scheme. Then you begin to wonder and think, is everything we’re upset about or fighting for really worth it?
This mix is my humble attempt at capturing the feeling of being on a two way journey to space. I wanted to imagine and convey what it feels like to spacewalk once up there and see the whole planet spinning right before you. What kind of thoughts would go through our minds during that magnificent instant?
To give it a memorable ending, I’ve concluded this mix with the words of the legendary Steve Jobs from his 2005 Stanford Commencement Address. It’s a rework of a beautiful mix originally created by Matt, which he released right around the time Jobs passed away.
Good For While this mix is just as good for relaxing as all the other ones in the ‘Unwind‘ series, it’s the first that has quite a bit of inspirational spirit to it. So listen to it when you’re feeling like you’re at the end of your rope, stuck in a time or place and you can’t seem to move on.

Inspiration Imagine.
This mix is dedicated to all people who dare to dream of a better world, a one without the conflicts and wars that plagued our world today. There’s no denying that, as everyday goes by, the human race is descending into unprecedented levels of hatred and intolerance. Look no further than the Arab Spring uprisings, no one could have imagined what those dictators were capable of descending into just to protect their worldly and vanishing possessions. It’s unthinkable, yet we’ve seen it with our own eyes and we struggled to believe that our own kind is capable of such horrendous acts.
When all is said and done, sometimes I like to zone out and run my imagination wild and free. I like to think that one day, somehow humans will find a way to coexist. To be able to give and take. To share this planet Earth equally and fairly among all of us, and to nourish it so that our future generations will be able to do the same.
So when you’re listening to this mix, just set back, relax and imagine. Imagine you’re in a wide open green field, setting next to a tree in the early hours of the day. It’s the break of dawn and the sky above you is slowly but surely starting to light up from darkness. The clouds are clearing up and the early rays of sunshine are passing through, touching upon the grass and creating moving waves of lights. And while you’re enjoying the breeze in this peaceful atmosphere, reflect on what it feels like to live in a city of hope, a city were people loved and where kind to each other. They don’t speak the same language, have the same color or share the same religion, but they’ve found a way to embrace and accept one another, for better and worse.
Good For When creating this mix, I wanted to expand my selection of down-tempo genres, while focusing on not just mixing great songs, but also songs that maintained the overall mood of the mix. You’ll find that this mix on the whole is a bit more mellow compared to Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. So it’s more suitable for times when you truly want to relax your mind and body.

Good For This mix starts out a bit emotional with the first 4 songs, then adopts a bit more uplifting spirit through to the end. I’d say it’s quite suitable for times when you’re feeling a bit down and emotional. It should help you release some of those emotions, relax and hopefully feel much better towards the end of it.

Inspiration Some 5 years ago, I got my first taste of chillout music when I accidentally stumbled by DJ River‘s awesome chillout and ambient mixes. I completely fell in love with them and the genre as a whole. Few years later, I also discovered MDB “Beautiful Voices” mixes, which further reinforced my appreciation for how much this style of music is capable of literally helping us relax and chill out.
Good For I personally love to put on this kind of music especially during a flight. There is something about drifting off and on listening to this on a plane that I can’t explain, but really do enjoy.
Primarily, I wanted this mix to be just like it says: something to kick back and relax with whenever and wherever you need to. You could play this at home using a speaker system or headphones while enjoying a drink on a lazyboy, or maybe at the beach watching the sunset or sunrise. It’s also good for your morning commute to work or school, since the music here is the kind of music you want to start your day with: cheerful, uplifting, not too upbeat but also not too mellow.
Tracklist You’ll notice that some tracks are done by high-profile DJs like Roger Shah, ATB, and John O’Callaghan. Those great artists aren’t only known for their Trance records, but they also produce some of the finest down-tempo tunes I’ve ever heard.
