A reflection from R.J. featuring two songs and a guided time of prayer. Silent Saturday invites us to imagine the time between Jesus’ death (remembered on Good Friday) and Jesus’ resurrection (celebrated on Easter Sunday) when Jesus’ followers and closest friends had just witnessed their hope, their friend, their teacher, their rescuer die. Silent Saturday is about coming to the end of our way and the beginning of His. It is only Christ who can carry us over into Easter morning, and so it is with all the Silent Saturdays of our life. Take a moment now to reflect and acknowledge the silence you have felt this year from God.
Find the All Souls guide to Silent Saturday here.
Good Friday Way of the Cross guide.
Today, for us as a community, the story zooms in on Jesus’ crucifixion. Yesterday we celebrated Maundy Thursday which has become known for Jesus washing his disciples feet. He gives this "mandate," which is where the word "maundy" comes from, that you love one another as I have loved you. And on Good Friday Jesus takes that a step further, laying down his life for those who would betray and desert him.
Flemming Rutledge in her book Three Hours: Sermons for Good Friday, offers today’s reflection as read by All Souls staff Kara Barrett. Please imaginatively engage this key scene from Jesus’ life that in turn shapes our own lives.
Find a Maundy Thursday Dinner Liturgy here with songs, guided reflections, and prayers.
Today, for us as a community, the story zooms in on Jesus’ last supper among his disciples when Jesus does something shocking. He washes their feet. Peter refuses. Jesus insists. Jesus washes the feet of his disciples. Their leader, their Lord takes the role of servant. He even washes the feet of Judas, who will soon betray him.
Theologian and author Will Willimon offers this reflection in his book Thank God it’s Thursday. The book is about today, what has become known as Maundy Thursday, a day that has come to be associated with radical love of Jesus expressed in foot washing. So on 'Foot Washing Thursday,' imaginatively enter this scene in the life of Jesus and allow Willimon to be your guide. For tonight, there's a liturgy to go with your dinner, a collection of prayers, songs, and guided reflections.
Join us this evening on Zoom at 8p.
During Holy Week, consider yourself invited to reflect on your story and history in fresh ways as Jesus' story shapes us. Jesus' final days on earth are an interruption, a gracious interruption of steadfast, unflinching love in response to our human fickleness and most destructive tendencies. Today we reflect on why Jesus said it was better that he go away in John 14 and what that means for how we now can pray and talk to and have access to God.
You can find the accompanying worship guide here.

R.J. March, a pastor to the All Souls community, walks through how grace and the gospel impact how we as followers of Christ navigate the days leading up to the National Election— as well as the complex emotions, ongoing turmoil, and continuing work that will follow. The reflection closes with a participatory song and prayer, asking for God to re-shape how we see those we call our "enemies" and give us courage to be instruments of his peace.
This episode follows a conversation we as a community held on October 29th as a part of our Grace Groups, which are committed to learning to live by grace instead of proving ourselves all the time, or thinking we can do life alone.
