Franz Smit is a pilot and founder of PilotInsure, a leading loss of licence insurance company based in South Africa. Franz grew up in the small town of Tarkastad, in the Eastern Cape. As a young boy, he regularly watched airliners fly overhead en-route to Johannesburg. This captivated his imagination and drove him to pursue a career in flying.
Along the way Franz became a financial advisor and used his knowledge of aviation and insurance to dig deep into the world of “loss-of-license” cover for pilots. Franz is passionate about his alternative career in flying, serving aviation professionals, when they need it most.
After more than a decade Franz has become a well known name in the industry. During the Covid 19 pandemic, Franz used his network to arrange fly-in get togethers to support fellow pilots during the difficult times. The idea was to bring fellow pilots with their new business ventures and product offerings to a central venue, to help pilots sell their goods and services. Some of these businesses continue today.
Franz is passionate about his industry and gets fired up when talking about protecting a pilot’s number one asset, the flight medical and right to earn a living. Andre Viljoen studies Accounting in Johannesburg, but shortly after finishing articles, he headed East to explore life and the world of Finance. After spending many years in emerging markets banking, Andre made his way back to South Africa in Cape Town. He was looking for a new business challenge and that is when he began Woodstock Brewery, amidst the craft beer revolution hitting the Mother City at the time.
Andre is a smart and interesting guy who says it like it is. Having been through various versions and visions of business, Andre and the team at Woodstock Brewery have settled down as a landmark venue in Cape Town. Annabel has been flying Since 1999. She earned her Air Force Wings before learning to drive a car. Throughout her career, Annabel has been challenged to jump extra hurdles.
President Nelson Mandela, knew not only her name, but also her parents names. Annabel has that effect on people. Her sparkling personality is warm, friendly and inviting, but don’t her charm confuse you. She is diligent hard-working and capable. Annabel was a Training Captain at the VIP, 21 Squadron of the SA Air Force. She continues to assist at the Squadron on a part time basis. Annabel is also a Captain at South African Airways, after serving the national carrier for 16 years.
We had a frank discussion about the struggles of being a woman in a male dominated environment. While Annabel trained in the same Air Force that I did, we experienced it in a very different way. Small infringements during her training were met with questions about her ability. She regularly came up against the pressure of being female throughout her time serving her country. What changed for Annabel, was she stopped listening to the naysayers and carried on regardless. Easier said than done.
Annabel’s candid story about needing to be ‘extra prepared’, just to do the same job that men have been doing for many years, hits home. Perhaps this is a conversation that needs to reach the public discourse. My sister, Nicola, has faced similar pressures and roadblocks during her aviation career too. We discuss some of these ideas during this episode too.

Noah Lieberman was excited by flight from his first experience flying on a DC3 around Mexico as an 8 year old. Affectionately known as the Gooney Bird, the DC3 has found a warm spot in a lot of our hearts. Noah was keen to become an aerospace engineer. He also wanted to learn how to fly.
Shortly after beginning his pilot training as a teenager, he ran out of funds. He later went to university and continued his career in the tech industry, repairing hardware and later delved into software development. He cemented his belief in customer service while working in tech support, which was evident while running Coradine. If you have ever found the need to reach out to Coradine, you will understand what I’m talking about.
With a young family, he needed to make a strategic decisions to chase his dream of working in aerospace. Moving across the country and a new adventure began working, building websites for an Internet Service Provider. After several frantic years in the burgeoning website industry, Noah decided to make a big decision to get back to his dream of flight.
Noah continued his path to become a pilot. He was surprised by the amount of paperwork required to keep track of the flying details. Having been an Apple fan for several years, he decided to make his own database for his flying training. He was sure that other Mac users would be interested, so he posted it on a shareware service and quickly pilots from all over the world began adopting his “personal logbook”.
Pilots began to ask for specifics to their own needs and different logbook requirements for Civil Aviation organisations all around the globe. The launched on day one of the Apple App Store, being one of two aviation apps. This coincided with AirVenture Oshkosh, with hundreds of pilots arriving at his small booth announcing the launch of LogTen, by Coradine.
15 years and more than 150 000 customers later, LogTen has become the most successful logbook program for professional pilots.

Marc Priestley is the author of The Mechanic, an insider look at life on the formula one circuit. Marc joined the McLaren Formula 1 team in 1999 while Mika Hakkinen was reigning world champion and later defended his title with McLaren, making it a back to back championship. McLaren we’re on the upswing and about to revolutionise the sport for the next several years.
Marc later work with big names in the sport, such as: David Coulthard, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton, who won his maiden World Championship while Marc was a senior mechanic in the McLaren team.
What is fascinating about Marc’s story is the level of commitment he displayed to enter into the realm of Formula 1. For nearly a decade, Marc pursued his goal of joining an F1 team. Each rejection letter was an opportunity to improve himself and become more attractive to an F1 team. Finally, in 1999 Marc got a call up from the McLaren F1 team, the reigning World Champions.
After a successful career in the garage of a winning pit crew, Marc transitioned into media, providing commentary with BBC Radio. Marc’s stories of his life in a cutting edge F1 team is captivating and provides a behind the scenes look at the heart of Formula 1 racing. We discuss some of the stand out points of being a part of the exclusive High Performance Team that is McLaren F1.

Calvin is the Founder and CEO of Melon Mobile, South Africa’s newest Mobile Network. While the service is recent on the scene, the team have been building the product for the past two years. Calvin has more than two decades experience combining entrepreneurship, internet service provider and providing efficient simple solutions to everyday life.
Calvin was born into a family of farmers, originally resident in Zimbabwe. During his school years his family moved to South Africa and continued farming in the Northern Eastern corner of South Africa, near Louis Trichardt, also known as “Fightertown RSA”, as this is where the Fighter Squadrons of the South African Air Force are based.
He went straight into business consulting with Accenture, before a family need brought him back to the farming town of Louis Trichardt once more. When Calvin’s father passed away, he was needed to help the family. It was during this period where Calvin put his entrepreneurial mind to the test, combining tech and farming. Calvin quickly made a name for himself solving farming problems with his simple tech solutions. The tech business pulled him back to Gauteng and his journey continued.
Years down the line, Calvin was head hunted to set up a business unit with the mighty MTN brand. The “big yellow machine” as he affectionately refers to MTN, wanted Calvin to set up the home fibre and mobile data division, to run in parallel to their already dominant voice business. Calvin rallied his team and dubbed the new division “supersonic”, and boy did the success come quickly. Within 2 years, supersonic won best Internet Service Provider in South Africa 2019.
Our journey crossed paths when he reached out to me to set up a remote call centre, during the crazy work-from-home and school-from-home era of 2020. Demand for internet rocketed and he needed to scale a team quickly. Digital Care was born to support supersonic with customer care.

Shaun Tomson is a South African professional surfer and former world champion, environmentalist, actor, author, and businessman. He has been listed among the top 10 surfers of the century, and was the 1977 World Surfing Champion.
He is the author of the best-selling books “Surfer’s Code” and “The Code: The Power of “I Will“, and the writer and producer of the award-winning documentary film Bustin’ Down the Door.
Shaun is a Business Administration and Finance graduate from the University of Natal and has a Master of Science in Leadership from Northeastern University.
He is a World Surfing Champion, an inductee in the Jewish and South African Sports Hall of Fame, the US Surfing Hall of Fame, and has been described as one of the greatest surfers of all time and one of the most influential surfers of the century (Surfer Magazine 1999).

In this short episode, Alex expands on the concept of perseverance and resilience. In episode #74 of the podcast, Alex spoke with Yoshi Muroya, the 2016 Red Bull Air Race World Champion. During that conversation, Yoshi explain how difficult it was to obtain the first sponsorship for and aerobatic aircraft in Japan. The had been no previous reference to airshows and Yoshi was attempting to start the ball rolling, but couldn't afford to operate the aircraft on his own.
After more than 2000 rejections, he managed to land a sponsor, which later developed into the Red Bull Air Race in the Far East. The tenacity required to hear so many no's and still try again the next day is amazing. We don't often realise how much effort is required to achieve some of our lofty goals.
If you have great ambitions for your life, you need to dig really deep. You will need a lot of perseverance, tenacity, skill and a good dose of luck too. I wish you all the best!

Linda Sollars has a fascinating story! She has covered several careers and is currently an airline Captain with JetBlue Airways. During her off time over the past few months, Linda has spend many weeks at Sling Aircraft in Johannesburg, building her own Sling High Wing, with a team support crew from Sling. This High Wing is the first off the production line and she has recently received her Federal Aviation Administration certification and license to fly the aircraft.
This conversation covered a wide range of topics, which tracked her varied careers over the past 40 years. She has been an insurance salesperson, an investment banker, a chief pilot, a safety consultant, a certified coach, an aircraft engineer and an airline Captain.
The next adventure is to fly the aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean to attend the Oshkosh Air Show. This trip will be three Sling High Wing aircraft, each having two pilots onboard. Two of the six pilots include James Pitman and Mike Blyth, co-founders of Sling Aircraft. These two gentlemen are no strangers to adventures in Sling's.
At the time of the interview, Linda was was for an FAA inspector to approve her aircraft for flight. It has since been given the green light. Well done Linda!

Nicole Smith-Ludvik stood on top of the world last year! She was the stuntwoman in the Emirates Air Hostess uniform, standing on top of the Burj Khalifa. At nearly 1 kilometre above the earth, The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world. The small square platform is only big enough for one person to stand dead still on the top.
Later in 2020, the stunt team got together once more and complete a second, more complex activity on top of the Burj Khalifa. This involved an Airbus A380, the largest aircraft in the world, making a flypast just behind Nicole, while she stood at the top.
This conversation is inspirational and heartfelt. Nicole suffered two major tragedies and injury in her early twenties. She lost her first husband and within two years, after rebuilding her life, she lost her new life partner in a motor vehicle accident. The accident left her broken and injured and unsure if she would be able to walk again.
Her journey to the top of the world is an amazing story. Please take a listen and enjoy.

I'm doing a lot of flying again and recently I thought I would share some thoughts from the air. Today we dive into the topic of overnight success.
It’s easy to want to pursue overnight success. To strike it big. The entrepreneurial personality (especially) is inclined to go big and risk it all on a blind hand. But the truth is, it takes years to cultivate a valuable idea.
Stories of fast growth in business can seem motivating at first. They make it look easy, so you’re willing to take the leap. But aiming for instant gratification will set you up for failure.
When you don’t find success as quickly or easily as promised, you’re left wondering what on smurf you did wrong. What’s their secret?
The real secret is that there’s no secret to speed up your road to success. You have to fall in love with the process and deploy patience. This is what we explore together in today's episode.

Sarah Ferguson is the founder of Breathe Conservation, an international nonprofit organization that believes in a plastic-free ocean and aims to eliminate disposable plastic.
She is passionate about the ocean and works tirelessly to safeguard it for future generations to enjoy and appreciate responsibly. Since 2012, she has been competing in and pioneering ocean swims in and around South Africa, and internationally, to raise awareness about single-use plastic pollution.
Sarah was inspired to create something meaningful with her swimming talents, when she found her passion for open water swimming in 2011 during her first open water swim in Hawaii.
She is also a physiotherapist who runs a private practice at a multi-disciplinary center in Durban North, South Africa, a motivational speaker and pilates instructor.
In her ongoing bid to raise global awareness for plastic pollution in the coastal ecosystem, Sarah is swimming the 1,500km distance from Durban to Cape Town, her most challenging swim to date.

In this episode I'm joined by Astronaut Mike Mullane and his son Patrick. Colonel Mike Mullane flew three missions on STS-41D, STS-27 & STS-36. His son Patrick also served in the USAF and now Executive Director of The Harvard Business School. Both Mike and Pat have written incredible books, which we discuss in the conversation.
Mike's book Riding Rockets, is his perspective of going through selection and training to become an astronaut. Pat's book "the Father, Son and Holy Shuttle" is his perspective of being a child of an astronaut parent in the 1980's and the impact it had on his life. Patrick Mullane is the author of The Father, Son, and Holy Shuttle: Growing Up an Astronaut's Kid in the Glorious 80s. The book tells of Patrick's life as the son of military aviator and astronaut Mike Mullane who ultimately flew into space three times on the space shuttle.
Mike Mullane is an engineer and Weapon Systems Officer, a retired USAF officer, and a former NASA astronaut. He is relatable, down-to-earth and has an incredible sense of humour and adventure.

Declan Greggain-Smith runs a video blog on Instagram, sharing his journey of recovery from kidney cancer. He has picked up a significant following both in the United Kingdom and globally. His honest, open, and heartfelt messages resonate with people going through a similar journey.
Declan shared his story of waking up after a night out with friends and beers, peeing bright red blood! He rushed to the emergency room at his nearest hospital in London, and the ensuing 5 days of this trauma.
His recent scan has gone well and he is in great shape, losing 18kg while on the journey of recovery. His videos continue nevertheless and have been picked up by several Cancer organisations, which have started sharing his story on their platforms too.
Declan is a positive and enthusiastic guy, with a no-nonsense attitude to work and getting things done. 6 months ago, after a week-long ordeal of trauma in hospital, he was delivered the news that he has kidney cancer. One of his kidneys, together with the 10cm tumour was removed after it ruptured late one night. This sparked off a new journey for Declan and life 2.0 has begun for him and his family.
Alex and Declan are very good friends and have known each other for more than 30 years. This fun conversation, going back to High School days of skipping class, adventuring on our motorbikes, and watching Danny Boyles - 'Trainspotting' was a trip down memory lane too. Declan shares insights into his work ethic and team building skills, starting at the lowest position in a restaurant, cleaning tables at 15 years old. He has more than two decades of experience in the Food and Beverage industry in London, leading large teams in very busy and high paced industry.

The South African born Patrick Anthony Howard 'Paddy' is a Cricket Coach, specialising as Head Coach in Professional T20 cricket. He is also a Mental Coach to professional athletes, Sports Scientist Executive Coach, Professor, speaker and author of “The Barefoot Coach”.
After Paddy completed his second master's degree in Business Coaching from Middlesex University (2003), he was appointed Mental Conditioning and Strategic Leadership Coach of the Indian National cricket team in 2008 along with Gary Kirsten as head coach. Under Kirsten and Upton, the team attained the ICC top test team ranking for their first time (2009), and went on to win the ICC World Cup in 2011.
Paddy Upton is an extremely successful coach with degrees from four different Universities, including two Master's degrees. In 2015 he was awarded the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Achiever Award, awarded to Alumni who made significant contributions to their specialist fields and contributed to the development and well-being of society at local, provincial, national or international levels.

Would you like to know what it's like to become an astronaut? Do you want to know what it's like for an astronaut for that first blast off into space, to be in space and what it's like to see Earth rotating around every 90 minutes you’ve orbited the Earth?
Maurizio Cheli is a lieutenant colonel in the Italian Air Force, a European Space Agency astronaut and a veteran of one NASA Space Shuttle mission. Maurizio joined the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1992 and was then sent to the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston where he would train as a Mission Specialist, who is effectively the flight engineer of the space shuttle. In 1996 he attended the Space Shuttle Columbia STS-75 Tethered Satellite mission, to be the first Italian to assume the role of Mission Specialist.
During the expedition, while he was flying over our planet, he took a picture of Mount Everest and since then, he always desired to reach that peak, and so he did: after having seen the world from above, in 2018 he even reached the “top of the world. For more than 10 years he has displayed the Eurofighter at the Paris Air Show and he's built his own aeroplanes too. He is an entrepreneur in the aviation industry and a speaker. Maurizio is sought to cover topics such as passion, teamwork, change management, decision making, sustainability and more.
Alex MacPhail and Maurizio Cheli go into detail about what it is to become an astronaut, what it is like to train for missions, what the launch looks like with the feelings of the acceleration and the g-forces at operating these machines.

From fighter pilot to the owner of a fleet of luxury aircraft. Alex MacPhail talks to Glenn Gonzales who is the co-founder and CEO of Jet It,
Gonzales, a Lieutenant Colonel Air Force veteran, started his career flying F-15s in 2005. He served as an instructor pilot and was later deployed to Kyrgyzstan. He transitioned to the reserves in 2009 and began working at planemaker Gulfstream while pursuing his MBA at the University of South Carolina. The Houston native had his first brush with elite travel while demonstrating flights for executives and high net worth customers.
He met his future co-founder, Vishal Hiremath, who also worked in sales at Gulfstream, in 2013. After flying to India, they were stuck together for a week because the plane needed repairs.
The following year, he went to work at Honda Aircraft Company, managing sales for the Northeast region. For years, he kept hearing the same complaint from customers, that they loved HondaJets but couldn't justify the cost of buying a plane. In 2016, he started planning to launch his own business and currently he captains flights for Jet It occasionally.

Well, what does it take to go from licking envelopes as your first job, to senior partner and exco member of Deloitte? Ursula Fear is just that woman, she knows how to get her hands dirty, she knows how to be tenacious and not saying no. Typing skills of 3 words a minute, “Don't close the door on me, give me another chance and I'll prove myself.” Alex MacPhail and Ursula had a delightful conversation about learning, what it takes to teach people, and give them the opportunity to believe in people and create that environment for them to learn the best.
Ursula Fear is a seasoned professional that has focused on talent and skills development in South Africa for more than 20 years. She is currently the L&D Executive at Blue Sky - the largest Salesforce Provider in Africa. In her career she has played a significant role in spearheading the design of qualifications, built and designed award-winning development interventions and assisted in establishing an education NGO called TEACH South Africa. She was a Human Capital Partner at Deloitte and has contributed to many human capital consulting projects from talent management, executive leadership development and HR strategy. She was the first woman to serve on the Deloitte Consulting Leadco heading up the Talent & Culture portfolio.
Ursula was instrumental in assisting in the build of a talent platform called ‘Talent Talks’ (www.talent talks.net) a collaborative social platform aimed at driving talent collaboration and knowledge sharing between corporate South Africa. In 2017 she participated as the only African in the first global masterclass at Nyenrode Business Universiteit (Amsterdam, Netherlands) that focused on future learning and leadership development. In this episode, Alex MacPhail speaks to Mike Stopforth about his time in the Pipe Band and competing at the Pipe Band World Championships in Scotland. This later evolved into a rock band and his life on stage, teaching, entertaining, and training began in his early 20s.
Mike shares his horrifying story about when he was out skateboarding with his friends. He saw a light aircraft crash into his friend’s vehicle right before his eyes, and while he was frozen with panic another friend rushed in and started pulling people out of the wreckage. Alex and Mike talk about this startling effect, how it's relevant in aviation and how pilots are trained to manage this, and how it relates to real life and whether this could be a developed skill.

Matthias Dolderer is a German Professional Race Pilot. He was not only the first driver to win a race on the legendary Speedway, he is also the first German World Champion ever in the Ultimate Motorsport series of the skies and the first air race pilot to take the world title ahead of schedule .
He gained a glider and ultralight license at the age of 17 and the following year obtained his private pilot’s license. At 21 he became the youngest flight teacher in Germany. He is also the 2016 champion of the Red Bull Air Race.
Florian Bergéris a German Aerobatic and Airline Pilot. He is the first German ever to claim the Challenger Cup title and the only pilot of any nationality to have earned the honour twice.
He began his career by piloting gliders and still cross-trains with them when time permits, in addition to flying the A320 as a First Officer for Lufthansa. When Bergér joined the Challenger Class in 2015, he was one of the youngest pilots ever to fly in the Red Bull Air Race.

Yoshi Muroyais a Japanese aerobatics pilot and race pilot of the World Championship Air Race. He started entering the Red Bull Air Race from 2009, and won its Chiba round for his first time in 2016. In 2017 he became Red Bull Air Race's World Champion.
He also holds air shows throughout Japan to generate public awareness in aerobatics. He actively works to bridge the earth with the sky and holds the Japan National Aerobatic Championship event.

Maj. Trevor Aldridge served as the Left Wing Pilot for the United States Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds.
Aldridge is a 2009 graduate of the Air Force ROTC program at Texas A&M University. He completed the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program, Sheppard AFB, Texas in 2011. After pilot training, he was assigned to the F-15C at Kadena AB, Japan where his squadron won the Raytheon Trophy twice and then Sheppard AFB, Texas as an instructor pilot teaching Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals and several other positions.

Steve Jones is a British airline pilot and an aerobatics pilot who competed in the Red Bull Air Race World Series, flying a Zivko Edge 540, before taking up the post as race director. Jones had his first flying lesson at just five years old, in 1965, in a Cessna, on the knee of a family friend.
He became a pilot both commercially and competitively. Commercially, Jones is a senior Captain for British Airways, flying a Boeing 747. He spends his off-season working on and racing vintage cars.

At 65 Robert Owens completed five of the world’s toughest endurance events, in one year. He also completed 7 marathons in 7 countries in 7 days! He has competed in an 8-day race over 200 miles across Greece; a combination run/ocean swim event lasting more than nine hours; an Ironman Triathlon; and a 50-hour challenge modelled after a Navy SEAL-style Hell Week.
Robert says he is an average guy. Trained as an US Air Force Pararescue operator, the medical rescue equivalent of a Navy SEAL, he was one of only 7 to qualify, of the 157 candidates.
Robert understands setbacks. He was adopted as an infant. His knees and ankles were deformed. From 5 - 10 yrs, he wore special boots with metal rods to support his walk. He was never part of any school sports team and later had to find his own way in life.
Once he finished high school, he lived a carefree life, often in trouble with the law. He got severe burns, when fooling around with a beach fire and a peer-pressure dare.

Martin Šonka is the 2018 Red Bull Air Race World Champion. Martin, from Sezimovo Ústí, claimed his first overall crown, and the first for the Czech Republic, in a gripping title battle in 2018. If Šonka can deliver another outstanding campaign this season, he could become only the second pilot in history to clinch the sport’s highest honor two years in a row.
Šonka began flying gliders and parachute jumping at age 17. As a pilot in the Czech Air Force, he flew a supersonic jet fighter, the JAS-39 Gripen, in the 211th Tactical Squadron and was a member of the prestigious Czech Air Force display team flying the L-159 ALCA. He also holds a master’s degree from the Military Academy and the University of Pardubice.
Šonka’s aerobatics career started with gliders and then powered aircraft. Since joining the Czech aerobatic team in 2005, his achievements include European overall Vice Champion in the Unlimited category, two-time World Freestyle Vice Champion, three consecutive European Freestyle Championships, and eight Unlimited and seven Freestyle Championship wins at Czech Nationals.

Bryan Roseveare grew up in aviation. Having been around his father who flies and shown a keen interest since a tender age, he was destined to become a pilot. Today, like thousands of others, Bryan has his wings clipped, first by a crippled airline and closely followed by COVID-19.
Never someone to back away when the difficulty starts, Bryan doubled-down on an already solid beginning with Bryan Air. Melanie Astles is a six-time French Aerobatic Champion in five separate levels, from Espoir in 2007 – to Elite/Unlimited in 2020 and reigning British Unlimited Champion.

Prof Johann Coetzee is a Psychologist, mentor, author, helicopter pilot, accomplished athlete and family man. Has a love for learning and holds three doctorates, together with emeritus professorships.
Johann was instrumental in starting Henley Air in 1995, and although not directly involved with the day-to-day running of the business, he is held in great respect for his guidance, wisdom and ethics. Johann has counselled more than 27000 people during his career as a Psychologist, including World Cup winning coach, Gary Kirsten.
He has been a friend and mentor for many airline, aerobatic and helicopter pilots and continues to counsel and de-brief pilots in distress to this day.

In this episode Alex interviews Captain Jim "Guido" DiMatteo, a world-class pilot who spent 25 years flying fighters in the U.S. Navy. He logged more than 5,000 hours flying the F-14 Tomcat, F/A-18 Hornet, A-4 Skyhawk, F-5N Tiger II and F-16N Fighting Falcon. He commanded Top Gun adversary squadrons on both coasts and led the foundation stood up by the Commander Naval Air Forces to organise the Centennial of Naval Aviation Celebrations in 2011.
DiMatteo retired in 2013 and currently serves as the Race Director for the popular World Championship Air Race (WCAR) and as vice president of flight operations, features and attractions for the world’s largest aviation event, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Dr Anchen Laubscher is Group Medical Director for Netcare. She is responsible for the strategic oversight of all clinical and quality related matters. Previously, Dr Anchen was part of a High Performance Team, operating as a flying doctor with Netcare 911 helicopter. She now leads a High Performance Team of subject matter experts and is responsible for quality.
After qualifying as a Doctor and not someone to rest on her laurels, Dr Anchen later further qualified with a Diploma in Child Health, Diploma in Primary Emergency Care, Post Graduate Diploma in General Management and an MBA (cum laude). She is also a member of the examining board of the College of Emergency Medicine of South Africa.

Neil Clarke, an airline Captain with South African Airways for more than 25 years, has been a Human Factors facilitator for more than two decades. Willie spent 3 decades serving as a front line fighter pilot and Commanding Officer within the Royal Air Force. After his distinguished military career, Willie spent 10 years on the air show circuit around Europe flying a 2 ship Pitts Aerobatic team.
This conversation covers his background, military career, display flying and of course the upcoming new series of World Championship Air Race. We talk about about some of the improvements and changes to the series. There are new rules, different leagues, new race teams, new pilots and new cities. This might just be the best iteration of air racing yet.

Heybrech van Niekerk was the first lady to represent the Silver Falcons Aerobatic Team, the national display team of the South African Air Force. She was selected to fly in the number 2 position in 2011 and later moved to the number 4 position. During her time, Heybrech has completed 75 public airshows.
The Silver Falcons selected Heybrech, celebrating the milestone of having the first lady in the team, before the RAF Red Arrows or the USN Blue Angels.
She completed her service in the SA Air Force in 2017. She served as a Flying Instructor at the Presidential Squadron, operating on both Falcon 50 and Boeing BBJ aircraft. Heybrech has operated as a corporate pilot since leaving the SAAF.

The Springbok Nude Girls are arguably South Africa's best rock band. They burst onto the scene in the mid 1990's with and energy and sound never before seen in SA. They have influenced other great South African bands such as the Parlotones and Fokofpolisiekar.
Springbok Nude Girls frontman Arno Carstens and guitarist Theo Crous, join me live on Thursday 15th October. The Nude Girls have toured extensively and are an integral part of the South African culture. Arno went on to a very successful solo career, while Theo moved into producing.
As a youth, Nude Girls were my favourite band and I am very excited to be talking with these to gentleman. Theo is busy with his PhD in music & creativity, and there will be lots to talk about. With more than 20 albums, Arno is not only a celebrated singer-songwriter, he is also celebrated in fine art.

Freek has been a pilot for more than 2 decades. He has recently left South African Airways and I thought this would be an open and honest conversation, about the emotions wrapped up in this life change.
Freek has also had a major medical issue. He was grounded for the better part of a year, had major cranial surgery and got back to full aviation health. The support received from South African Airways was tremendous.
For nearly a decade now, Freek has grown his hobby into a passion, then a side-line business. The side-line business is now the main event. Freek's work in restoring Classic BMW motorbikes has taken him all over the world. He has become an expert in this field and has fostered a close working relationship with BMW, restoring their classic motorbikes. He is now booked up, two years in advance.

Mandy Hickson. She was only the second woman to fly a Tornado GR4 on the front line, completing three tours of duty and 45 missions over Iraq. She became the Squadron’s Combat Survival and Rescue Officer, working closely with the US, instructing Squadron members on Escape and Evasion tactics.
Throughout her time, Mandy was the only female aircrew and later learned the lessons of juggling life as a working mother of two young children. Now a civilian, Mandy draws on her experiences to train and inspire others, covering the core areas of human factors; decision making, communication, leadership, behaviour, workload, conflict, fatigue and stress management. She is also a highly sought after keynote speaker in the business and education sectors.
Since leaving the RAF, she continues her support for the services in the Volunteer Reserve (VR), through flying on the Air Experience Flight, passing on her experience and enjoyment of flying to Air Cadets.

What got my attention is when Mark posted about managing Springbok Nude Girls being not too dissimilar to managing Venture Capital. Already I felt I knew Mark.
As the CEO of Neu Capital Africa, Mark runs an online platform which works with boutique corporate finance advisors to connect African companies to facilitate capital raising from $5m to $50m range.
Then when we spoke, I heard of Mark's adventure creating Turkey’s first aquarium in Istanbul as CEO and co-founder which he later sold to Merlin in 2013. I will be asking him about catching sharks during this interview, so stay tuned!

Daniel Perry was the co-pilot on the Nationwide Flight 723, which departed Cape Town International and shortly after lift-off had the right hand engine separated from the aircraft.
Engine failure after take off is a manoeuvre that is well versed and trained specifically for all airline pilots, twice per year. This however, was no ordinary engine failure after take off.
When the engine severed from the aircraft, there was a significant change in the flight characteristics, unusual to a conventional engine failure. The ruptured fuel and hydraulic lines caused a multiple, complex failures. Hydraulic failure on its own is a major emergency and requires dramatically increased workload from the flight deck, to bring the stricken aircraft back home.
Compounding an engine failure, a fuel leak, hydraulic failure, control issues and bad weather is a recipe for disaster. Trevor Arnold and Dan Perry dug deep and brought the B737 back to land in a miserable foggy, rainy Cape Town.

While fighting cancer in the ward, she was financing tobacco with her pension fund. Tobacco Free Portfolios was born to change the fight and stop her pension fund from investing in tobacco.
The Tobacco industry is big business. Usually listed as top 5 stocks on major stock exchanges around the world. Bronwyn and her team have made huge strides over the last decade. Their Tobacco Free Financial Pledge now has $10 Trillion total assets under management.
Her 2017 TEDx talk on tobacco-free finance has been viewed more than three million times.

In this episode I am joined by a special guest and friend of mine, Buti Tsebe. He was the pilot I trained to become a Silver Falcon. It is customary to train your replacement in the team and Buti became the number 3 when I departed in 2008.
Before being trained as number 3, Buti replaced me as the Ground Liaison Officer (GLO) for the Silver Falcons. Without question, Buti was a much better GLO than I was. I showed him the work required of him, but he always went the extra mile to make the Team’s job easy.
Buti became the first black Silver Falcon pilot. As a soccer fan, it was a particular privilege for Buti being a part of the World Cup 2010 opening in Johannesburg. The opening ceremony had 2 Billion viewers for their aerial display, possibly a world record at the time. It seems his habit of replacing me and improving in the position continued.

Juan Velarde is currently one of Spain’s top aviators. He has competed in the Red Bull Air Race series since 2014. He is also the Spanish National Aerobatic Champion and competed in the World Aerobatic Championships many times, earning several medals along the way.
Juan is also Captain for Iberia Airlines, flying the Airbus A330 on international routes. He also performs solo and formation aerobatics displays with Bravo 3 Repsol Aerobatic Team. Since 2006 he has been recognised as an Elite Sportsman by the Spanish Sports Council.

Mike and James flew around the world in 40 days! They did this in a Sling two-seater aircraft, which they built and was the prototype. They have flown to Oshkosh and now totalled two and a half times around the world, with crazy adventures in between.
Mike Blyth, adventurer, aviator and founder of Sling Aircraft, having earned his wings on trikes, is a die-hard stick and rudder man. Following years of research and a three-year obsession to design and assemble the perfect LSA he delivered a handy prototype. But the perfectionist in him would not rest. Rigorous testing of the aircraft revealed opportunities for nip and tuck improvements that would transform a good design into a great one.
James was a Johannesburg-based corporate lawyer and adrenaline junkie, with a mutual interest in rock-climbing. James was drawn to the creative doyen of the light aviation community, while Mike was intrigued by this wild-eyed rough diamond who combined a sharp intellect with a devilish sense of humour. And of course they both shared a boyish passion for adventure.
With increased means available the business was able to dis-assemble the development prototype and assemble a new improved version. The production prototype was specifically designed to perfect the flight characteristics and ensure handling aligned to “mil spec”.

My guest today is Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira, a formidable player on the rugby field and a key part in the 2019 World Cup winning Springbok team. He is the most capped prop in South African history and the third most capped Springbok of all time.
Originally from Zimbabwe, Tendai moved to South Africa with the goal of playing for the Springboks. It is never a linear path to success, there are always setbacks and disappointments. Tendai overcame many obstacles, but has retired after playing top flight rugby for more than a decade.
He has 3 x Currie Cups, 3 x Barbarian appearances, 1 Tri-Nations, 1 x Rugby Championship, 1 x British & Irish Lions series, the most caps in Super Rugby by a South African and a World Cup medal for 2019 RWC.

General Barker has been involved in Test flying for nearly 4 decades. He was a Silver Falcons display pilot, an A1 Category Instructor, an Honorary Fellow in the Royal Aeronautical Society, fired more missiles in testing than any other SA Air Force pilot and Captain of the SA Air Force cricket team.

My guest today has a distinguished aviation career. He was an operational RAF Harrier pilot in Afghanistan. He joined the Red Arrows in 2006 and later became the Red 1, the Leader and one of the most prestigious flying positions in the world.
After his RAF career, Ben joined The Blades aerobatic team, and later became the leader of the 4 ship team of Extra 300 and Extra 330's.
He has been a Red Bull Air Race Pilot since 2016 in The Blades racing team and has achieved many podium finishes, including 2nd place in Hungary.

Gary Kirsten is one of the greatest batsmen South Africa has ever produced. He was the first cricketer to play 100 tests and scored 21 test centuries, with a high score of 275. He played 185 ODI, achieved 13 centuries and held the record for highest ODI score of 188 not out.
As a batsman he had the ability to concentrate for long periods. He was one of the most organised batsman to play for South Africa, Calm and level-headed.
In 2007 was appointed coach of India, his low-profile approach to the job was appreciated by the players. He took India to No. 1 in the test rankings and World Cup Champions in 2011. As coach of South Africa, he also helped the Proteas to No. 1 Test team in the world.

My guest has a great story to tell. He set himself a goal of flying in the Red Bull Air Race series. Then he threw himself headfirst and worked until he got there. Dario Costa know how to set a goal and work like crazy until you reach it. He also knows that in flying, as in life, things don’t just come easy.
He is a part of the Flying Bulls and is a Red Bull Athlete, based at the head office in Salzburg. Our conversation will cover the journey this effervescent Italian embarked on, to reach his goal. There were many sacrifices along the way. Dario worked multiple jobs, lecturing aerodynamics during the evenings and developed training syllabi for the largest flying school in Italy, all the while giving aerobatic flying instruction.

Annabel Vundla was President Nelson Mandela’s pilot. She was also the first black female pilot and flying instructor in the Air Force. But more than that, she is a good friend of mine.
We learned to fly together, she earned her wings before she could drive a car. After a distinguished career flying for the 21 Squadron, the VIP Transport squadron of the SA Air Force, Annabel is now flying Airbus A320 for South African Airways.
There is an interesting story in her family. She is married to a helicopter pilot. Join in the conversation to find out more.

On this episode I am joined by Springbok number 636, the formidable Centre - André Snyman. André played 38 tests for the Springboks and scored 10 tries. He has a very high win percentage throughout his Bok career, averaging 68%. He was a Springbok during that record equally run of 17 unbeaten tests in a row.
During his first three years with the Boks, if André scored, the Springboks won!
He has played in South Africa, England and France. He has coached a winning side in the United States, with back to back victories in the Pacific Rugby Premiership 2015 & 2016. André was named Premiership Coach of the Year 2015.
He is now Head of Rugby at Hill House in Doncaster, UK.

My guest grew up on an Air Force Base, his father was the Officer Commanding of a Supersonic Jet Squadron.
He started his flying training in the Royal Air Force, transitioned to the University Air Squadron then left to pursue other interests. He settled down again in his late twenties and qualified as a flying instructor. His love for aerobatics coincided with his love for learning.
He became an aerobatic champion, an MBA alumni and set up an Aviation University in Toulouse. He ran this University in collaboration with Airbus and Dassault Aviation for many years.
Jon later became an academic at the Graduate School of Business, at the University of Cape Town. This paved the way for his current position. He set up and is now the Dean of the Henley Business School in Johannesburg.
From a small team of 5, Henley Business School now offers a variety of Executive programs and has twice won, Best MBA program in South Africa.

Captain Brad Bennetts is a specialist instructor at South African Airways. With his aerobatics and airshow experience, Brad was selected to head up the Upset Prevention and Recovery Training program nearly a decade ago.
He attended Advanced training in Arizona, with Aviation Performance Solutions, together with 2 other South African Airways pilots.
The Upset Prevention and Recovery Training initially didn’t have an Airbus program. Brad set off and over the course of one year, together with APS, they created the Airbus Strategy for UPRT.

I’m joined by Kevin Ellis, a current freelance helicopter pilot flying Medevac operations in Kenya. In August 2014 while on a Medevac contract in Somalia, he went swimming at the beach in Mogadishu.
After body surfing he made his way in and was bashed around by the incoming wave. He felt his leg bump a rock with a sharp pain on his right calf. Kevin put his hand down to feel. He felt something rough and was convinced it was a rock. Then the rock bit his left leg!
He was assisted by locals and received medical care, but his left leg was gone. Kevin had always been a very active guy. The next phase of his recovery was a matter of getting through and adapting to a prosthetic leg.
He was determined to not only walk, but swim in the ocean again, continue mountain biking and of course, get back into the cockpit.

Have you ever wondered how Air Traffic Control works in a busy European airspace? My conversation with Tobias Arndt, an approach controller with Deutsche Flugsicherung, based in Munich, covered flying, sky diving, airspace control and mandatory stress leave. Upper airspace control feeds into the approach sector where he is positioned, to line the aircraft up with the runway.
Germany has more than 3.3 million movements each year, making it one of the busiest airspaces in Europe. The record number of movements in one day last year was 11012! That is 11000 flights through German Airspace!

My guest has achieved great success in aviation. He is a hard working, well respected individual that has managed to reach the top position in a few different organisations. Captain Colin Jordaan (FRAeS), a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, currently sits on the Board of Comair Pty (Ltd).
Previously he was the Director of the SA Civil Aviation Authority. Prior to that post, he was the General Manager of Flight Operations and a member of the Executive Committee as South African Airways, the first and only pilot to hold this position.

In this episode I'm joined by André Coetzee, Chief Executive of Henley Air. He is not only a grade 1 Helicopter Instructor, with nearly 15000 hours on helicopters, André is also a Professional Mechanical Engineer and holds a PhD in Aviation Management. He is a reservist Lieutenant Colonel in SA Police Services Flying Squadron. André is also a member of the Flight Test Society of SA and is rated on 40 different helicopter types.
He started Henley Air together with his father, Prof Coetzee and has built one of the premier helicopter service providers in the country. They offer a range of services including basic and advanced helicopter training, charter operations and many corporate contracts including: Netcare 911, CarTrack, Matrix, precious metals and power line inspections.
André and his team pioneered Night Vision Goggles (NVG) training for Helicopter Emergency Medical Services. At the time Henley started with NVG operations, there were no CAA guidelines. The Henley team developed the guidelines for SA-CAA. They then implemented the training and got the certification and approval passed at CAA, to become the first NVG training provider and operator.

I’m joined by Terry Pappas, Managing Director at Bat Hawk aircraft. He is a very interesting and well travelled gentleman. Bat Hawk have developed their own Light Sport Aircraft which has proved highly successful. They are sold all over the world and are particularly able as visual reconnaissance and game viewing aircraft. Bat Hawk and South African National Parks have a relationship in the Anti Rhino poaching effort.
Bat Hawk has also provided aircraft for other games reserves all over Africa. This versatile light aircraft has also been used for crop-spraying, aerial reconnaissance, tours and even in a command and control role.
Terry has also been crew on the America's Cup winning Team, Alinghi, working as a Chef. As part of that journey, Terry also circumnavigated the globe on a yacht.

In this episode I’m joined by the Leader of the Silver Falcons, Major Sivu Tangana. Sivu was trained as a helicopter pilot, flying Agusta A109 and Denel Oryx helicopters before becoming a flying instructor.
Sivu, originally from Grahamstown, has been stationed at many places, usually involving the ocean nearby. He has operated as the spare pilot, number 3 and number 5, the soloist. He was appointed leader during 2019.
The Silver Falcons are based on the West Coast, at the Central Flying School, AFB Langebaanweg. This team is made up of full time flying instructors and regularly give up evenings and weekends to perform airshow displays.
The Silver Falcons has a rich history going back to 1967, when operating the Silver Aermacchi MB326 aircraft. The name was chosen as it was similar in english and in afrikaans, "Silwe Valke”.

On this podcast I’m very excited to be interviewing someone I respect a great deal. My sister, Nicola, has accomplished some amazing feats. She is hard working, diligent, intelligent and easy to get along with.
After earning her Honours in Business Science she embarked on a journey to Scotland working as an investment banker. She moved to London and shortly thereafter, qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Once completed, Nicola went on a round the world travel, which included fantastic places like the Galápgos Islands and Antarctica.
Once her trip ended in Cape Town, she began her 3rd career and qualified as a commercial pilot at 43 Air School in Port Alfred.
Her adventures as a commercial pilot and CA, led her to flying in the Okavango Delta, flying C206 from Maun, Botswana, to the many small lodges. Wild tales of chasing lions off the runway and being blocked by elephants are some of the many adventures of Nicola's life.

In this episode my guest is Red Bull Air Race pilot, Patrick Davidson. Patrick grew up in Port Elizabeth in and around flying. His father Stewart is also a world-class pilot, and exposed Patrick to flying from a very young age.
At 12 years old, Patrick won his first contest, flying with a safety pilot. He later competed solo on his 17th birthday.
Patrick is a five-time South African Aerobatic Champ and joined the Red Bull Air Race Challenger series in 2018. He managed to earn a couple of pole positions and several podium positions during his first season.

The Patrouille de France is the oldest formation aerobatic team in the world! Today I am joined by Athos 1, the Leader of the Patrouille de France, Major Samuel Lanos.
The Patrouille de France has a mesmerising show with 9 Alpha jets and coloured smoke, representing the National Flag. They are made up of highly experienced Fast Jet pilots, who have successfully passed the selection criteria of the PAF.
Samuel is the former Athos 4 and has recently taken over the leadership. Their hard work in training takes place in the winter months, thus ensuring the team is polished, ready for the summer airshow season across Europe.

I am super excited to have my great friend and ‘big brother” on the show. Gideon Langeveld is one of those gems, who has impacted so many lives, through giving of himself. As a leader, an instructor, a colleague and a friend.
He is a talented pilot, with a wealth of knowledge in Military, civilian, airline, instruction, airshow, filming and amphibian flying. Gideon has more float plane hours in South Africa, than any other pilot. He has fascinating tales about aircraft, amphibians, float planes and fire-bombing. He is as meticulous with his stories, as he is with keeping his aircraft in tip-top condition.
Gideon was a leader during the war, looking after the Aermacchi MB326 Impala Squadron while deployed for a year. He was also a highly successful Fleet Captain of the freighter fleet, always ready to go the extra mile to get the job done, and keep his pilots motivated. There is a great amount of respect for this humble gentleman and aviator.

I have a wonderful gentleman on the show, Colonel (Ret) Cobus Toerien, a man who has recently retired from South African Airways after an illustrious 44 years in aviation.
Cobus qualified as a fighter pilot on Aermacchi MB326 and served on the front lines. He later qualified as a Mirage F1 pilot and continued to serve his country. With more than 160 operational sorties and 10 years of operational tours, Cobus was promoted to Officer Commanding, 2 Squadron.
This was at a time where 13 fighter squadrons were combined into one single fast jet squadron, where Cobus led diligently for more than 5 years.
Along the way, he qualified as an Accident Investigator and served in a safety role since the early 1980’s. His final posting in the SA Air Force was in the Directorate of Combat systems. He transitioned as the Safety Manager at South African Airways and later joined the seniority list as a flying pilot once more.
His work in Accident Prevention and Safety has earned him many accolades. He has an immense network of friends and colleagues all around the globe. He is a wonderful man with a solid work ethic.

In this episode I was joined by Lt Marko Novkovic, number 6 in the Croatian Krila Oluje - ‘Wings of Storm’. Tragically, two weeks after our interview, Marko was killed in a training accident, unrelated to the aerobatic team. The Krila Oluje is the Croatian National Aerobatic Display Team. Formed in July 2004 used the Pilatus PC9 aircraft, the team are based at 93rd Military base, near Zadar.
In 2009 they increased the team to a 6-ship display team, thus adding more complex manoeuvres and a synchro pair to add to the excitement. The team have flown in various international airshow events and have won several awards including, the Royal International Air Tattoo award for best display team during 2016.

In this episode I had a great conversation with Francois Allison. We spoke about the discipline required in Air Force training, basic military training and flying training. How Air Forces around the world train their pilots in a similar fashion. We talked about the techniques of being a flying instructor and the relationships that build and grow as you pass on the "guild of flying"
He tells an interesting story of flying Nelson Mandela and Bill Clinton on the same flight. When Nelson Mandela was writing "The long walk to Freedom" Bill Clinton visited him. The SA Air Force flew both of these distinguished gentlemen out to an exclusive mountain retreat. Fran had the opportunity of not only flying them, but spending some time with them too.
Fran spent more than a decade in the SA Air Force, flying helicopters and as a flying instructor. He later transitioned into airline flying, first with SA Airlink and now with British Airways Comair on the Boeing B737.

In this episode I am joined by Pierre-Henri Chuet, callsign "Ate". He served on the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, operating the Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft.
Ate has an interesting story, both operating in the US Air Force and the French Navy. He is also a stroke survivor at a young age and has managed to regain his flying medical.
Ate now flies Boeing B737 for Air Canada. He also started and continues to run Mach 3 Management, a consulting company using the techniques learned in aviation, to deliver in high stress environments.

In this episode I am talking with Thomas Wilhelm, the Chief Test Pilot of Airbus Toulouse. Thomas is a former German Air Force Test Pilot and was involved in the Airbus A400M project for 10 years. On completion of high school Thomas initially spent his compulsory military service in the parachute division of the German military.
After a distinguished career of flight testing with the German Air Force, Thomas joined Airbus. He conducts production and experimental testing on all Airbus aircraft. He is currently the project pilot of the Airbus A330NEO program and also the Head of the Test Pilots.

This was a fascinating conversation with the Deputy Commanding Officer of the Snowbirds, Canadian Forces aerobatic display team, Lt Col Denis Bandet.
The 9-ship aerobatic team are flown by Royal Canadian Air Force pilots while the ground and support staff come from all arms of service. Denis has recently stepped down as leader, after spending several years with the Snowbirds. Join me for this exciting conversation.
The conversation moved around all aspects of Royal Canadian Air Force lifestyle and career. Denis is a former F18 fighter pilot and is now serving his second tour with the Snowbirds. His former position in the team was number 6. We talked about the role of the team and how they select new pilots. We touched on the selection process over a two week period.
The intense training schedule for this large and capable formation team will give new members at least 100 flights in their training. Interesting, they have a purpose designed training program for "over water" displays. The depth perception is quite different and they treat this as a whole different display.
