Coach Lorie

Lorie was earned the name “Coach”, from 42 years of developing young athletes and coaching them to success from amateur to professional levels. Her early career as a Master’s prepared Personal Trainer lead her to discover the mystery of the human mind. The brain is mapped out anatomically 100% says Lorie, but the mind is another matter. As a neuroscientist in sport, Lorie is trained education wise as a Kinesiologist and then drove head first into a Masters of Sports Science/Applied Neuroscience. “I wanted to help athletes, coaches and their families build better brains.” 🧠 If the mind can develop a program and routine for success then consistency becomes the foundation. Lorie has spoken with well over 10,000 athletes to see what they think makes Olympic quality performance. In fact the Olympic athletes training with Lorie have discovered that mental toughness is consistency under all conditions. Lorie’s mental science programs match body genetics with brain development. Some athletes have natural talent and yet others if they learn to control the mind can compete equally. Lorie is born and raised in Calgary Canada. Her reputation as a mental coach speaks for itself in that teams, groups and athlete families feel she connects better than most coaches. Her philosophy is simple: TRAIN the MIND to TRAIN the BODY. This Podcast will examine the essentials of developing the concept of trust. There is a range of trust values: Self Trust, Family Trust and Trusting your Sports Team Family. If you think about trust develops over time... that is you do not trust people right off the get-go. You have to see things play out and listen to their thoughts and ideas before bringing them on board with your world. Trust by asking the person questions and seeing the way they react. You will get a lot of traction from TRUST!

An emotional landscape is built on the solid notion that an athlete needs to realize their potential. Did your sports find you—or did you find the sport? Realizing what you are good at, what position suits you, and just what qualities you have will heighten your success in sport. Ever play a recreational game with one of your friends and realize you were good at it- an unexpected surprise and you felt good about yourself for weeks? The sport needs to match your emotional and mental strengths. Always select a full-time sport that you have a functional interest in and a realization that you are good at it already.

There is a direct correlation to high levels hormones in the brain and one’s sense of competition. In my group presentations as a mental trainer I want athletes to realize how they can gain respect as well as how to give it. The constant arguing on a team, cliques of people, jealousy, favouritism and name bashing is NOT COOL. Where is a foundational level of respect built from? The Apple does not fall far from the tree. Young athletes model what they see and what they think they need to do to impress someone. How is every second word or phrase understood in the midst of a plight of F bombs. Coaches model, parents lead the way and athletes will respond. Can we get a point across being CLASSY not SASSY. Let’s talk.

The youthful brain takes development time from the back to the front. Youth athletes may appear at times to walk around in a brain fog. They could walk right past a locker room sign telling them instructions, show up on the wrong day, forget their homework assignment and not remember their granny’s birthday. But they do remember a FaceTime call or what someone posted on Instagram. Internal awareness is about what is priority for that person at that time. Numerous pieces of data can cause the young athlete to feel on overload. To have a clear sense of self Coach Lorie gives some remedies for awareness and clarity.

Alone on a run, hitting early morning serves, walking out on the first tee-box on your own for 18 holes. Sports can heal and help with a person’s own mental health if done daily. Some athletes I have started working with present an urgent need to be a success. They have forgotten that sport is a journey, a process of being involved and learning over time. The more you explore your sport, practice your skills, the more solid development in the front of the brain takes place. Progressive challenges should be the practice plan of every coach. As a Master’s prepared coach, my job is to create the best learning experience I can for my team athletes and individual performers. If the environment is right then learning is natural and improvement is a given.

To feel empowered you have to know what you want and then go after it with a sense of pride and confidence. When an athlete can work harder than anyone else, when they can focus with a strong desire, when they never look back—they are pure power! Some young athletes today have had everything done for them. They are spoiled and have a sense of entitlement. Coach Lorie has made it known that athletes who throw rackets, bust hockey sticks or pout are people who have lost their personal emotional power. They have given up control and are experiencing defeat with every second they waste high rated displaced emotions, hissy fits, and f-bombs.

Think about Olympic athletes that have stood on the blocks with medals around their necks and flowers in their arms. There is a sense of emotional expression that is strong and deep. Passion is an emotion is hard to put into words. In all my career my most proud moments are to see the athlete in a position that they performed their personal best that day. The deep sense you made it, you were good enough drives the passion gauge in the brain sending high octane chemicals such as adrenaline, serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Love for your sport is often equal to love for yourself! Let’s learn this love language for sport together.

It is hard for many young athletes to express how they are feeling at any point in their sports training. Coaches who are mindful of all the different personalities in sport need to have more patience. Words of encouragement never hurt anyone, but attacks on a person’s ability can do considerable damage to the athletic mind. Athletes need to feel safe in their sport and ask for advice and express when they are not doing well or under social pressure from the team, other people, and staff. How many athletes fear their position if they come out and talk about abuse. Abuse can be mental, emotional, physical, and sexual. No athlete should be alone in this discussion. Coach Lorie delivers a very serious message to all those people who are involved in sport.

The first time one of my nine year old athletes skated out to center ice to perform her ice skating program, I could feel her Dad swell with pride, while her Mother was a nervous wreak. To consult with both personalities, all I said was as the music began, today is a milestone of independence. Her first solo will always stand out in her mind that all eyes were on her and people were warm and excepting of her grow up opening expression and landing one of her single loops with ease. She did fall, but managed to get right back up with a smile and skated her heart out. Independence for any athlete brings both a physical and psychological release. Athletes who feel free to perform to the best of their ability with no undue pressure from others stay in sport longer!

I love the definition of self-esteem as the ability to go from point A to point Z on your own. You cannot let others take over for you and finish the quality of your active life. You have to ride without the training wheels, you have to take a shot without being told to shoot, you can run, sprint and finish. Early in my career, I worked with youth with various ‘Abilities’. A parent with good intentions saw his son struggling with painting a wood birdhouse, the project of the class. They were embarrassed that their child’s birdhouse was not “up to par” with the rest of the kids. They began to paint the roof red, the door yellow. When it was perfect and neat looking they said to their child how great it was. This high spirited boy shouted back- you like it because you do it- not me! Self-esteem is owning your performance.

Over the last five years, researchers have begun to open the discussion on Resiliency not only in sport but in all humans that live in a complex world. Ask yourself an important question: “How do you want to feel every day”. How can you keep going on the days when things in your sports life are tough and not going your way? Athletes who are resilient are people who know when to ask for help and when to head forward on their own. They are not afraid of what others think, they set a course and focus on the details of the performance. Over my time in applied Neuroscience, I have met some tough as steel athletes. They inspire greatness.

When I first experienced mental sessions with teams I thought is was a great session if I got the players all hyped up. We would cheer, clap, and yell. Music boom boxes blaring in the locker room and athletes shouting their favorite lyrics. I was wrong to a very large extent. Athletes need to take control of their own emotions to bring themselves up or calming down. I was starkly aware that the athletes that were calmer seemed to perform better when we got on the playing surface. Calm control in the brain does seem to help athletes drill down to a good start and often early scoring.

Athletes who know their main emotional strengths do better under pressure. Self-regulation just means that you can adjust to many situations without spending undo emotional highs and lows. Years ago an Olympic rower for Canada taught Coach Lorie his routine for calmness. He knew to accept his responses to high-level exertion and all-out physical pain when training. It was like he knew to face the pain to push forward under a state of emotional neutral feelings. There is no way athletes can turn off the phase of emotions, however selecting the right emotions for the suited situation may lead to conserving energy.

Successful people and athletes generally are personalities that stay positive and keep their eye on the prize. Being optimistic is a trained talent in the sport. There are some athletes that are super positive if they are winning, but as soon as the win factor goes away, their true emotional character can take over. Athletes are known to be aggressive, ego-centered, and resilient at times. These are also emotional components that may give the success as long as the athlete can maintain a given level of respect for coaches and people supporting them. Trying to be happy all the time is a fantasy. The brain’s daily chemical floodgate will present the type of reaction you may have. Being optimistic really is about the athlete seeing the bright spots in their performance and moving on. Training never stops.

If you set your mind on performing well, then ask yourself what will take you off the mark? Determined athletes find a way to make things work in a practice or a game, simply because they keep trying. Never giving up, you attempt a play let’s say until you have it. You use practice time as a critical time to learn. You also do not give in to people around you who criticize you or put you down. You just keep going with an internal need to prove to yourself it can be done like Thomas Edison and his lightbulb! 💡

Science has found folds in the brain that indicate the ability of athletes to read a play or strategy just before it happens. What a great superhero power to know what is ahead in a game and be positioned for the challenge. Can these high sensations be learned, can you train for them? The answer is in repetition, and combined strategy. Let’s talk about how to build this skill.

The weakest of all human skills is the ability to adapt when a situation changes dramatically, or you have never faced a certain situation before and you do not know what to do. The ability to adapt in sport comes mostly from the number of hours of experience you have to rely on to make an adjustment. Athletes who study their sport, increase their sports IQ, adjust better than athletes who just hope for the best, and do not really examine things like strategy, types of moves/plays, rules, and various styles of doing a movement.

In your sports life if you can start by giving everyone the benefit of the doubt, you will not run into so much negative stress. This unbiased approach needs to come from everyone involved in sport. We all need to drop prejudice, racial slander, and to a large extent the chirps! As an athlete respecting referees, officials and fans is important. You set the tone of how you act and react on and off the playing field. Your ability to create an unbiased approach means that you come from a place of understanding, empathy and respect.

Ambition is the ability of the athlete to establish specific goals themselves by structuring a path to get there. The more successful you are the more you want to push for excellence. Part of an ambitious mind is knowing you can excel in your role as an athlete. You believe that you have time to chip away at your abilities and you will not give up. You also learn that what you put in to something directly effects the outcome.

Coaching young athletes at times maybe a communication challenge when the skill of listening and focusing are just developing. If you find yourself as a coach or parent repeating yourself often with an athlete, it is part of development. There are usually 10 steps or more for the brain to drill down to momentary focus on any one thing. The key is to keep things simple and in stages. There is no such thing as multi-tasking

Ask yourself are you ready to learn... or do you know it all? The problem in sports is everyone thinks they hold the key to how something should be done. If no two human brains are the same, then why is there one method? Athletes who are open to change, wanting to experiment and finding ways to win are coachable. Coach Lorie talks about being your own best coach in the long run.

Athletes who go for gold often have a deep mental sense they are worthy to be there. They feel powerful based on evidence and results over time. Self worthiness is based on the fact that someone believed in you and now you believe in your self. You experienced respect and unconditional love for those positive people around you. Coaches and parents are you listening!

Every athlete must start with the basics of motion, the knowledge of a technical skill and finish with strategy. Sports confidence builds over time and storing corrections. As we build it, we can store it and use it. Confidence is always there, sometimes you just cannot access it when the conditions of sport is new, or the calibre of skill is increasing. Stop saying someone lost their confidence or somehow got it back—it never leaves.

Sports are based on immediate reactions to changing conditions. Athletes need training support to make decisions in both  their sport and in their personal lives. Since the brain develops from back to the front, it takes experience and hours of practise to know what to do in certain situations. Making mistakes is how the brain adapts AND LEARNS.
