McKinsey's Women in the Workforce 2022 report confirms that the "broken rung" of the career ladder for women remains at the first step up to manager. For every 100 men promoted to their first manager role, only 87 women are promoted, and only 82 women of colour are promoted.
In this episode, Dr Becky Sage and Amy Armstrong hear from Janine Matho, about how she is leading ExponentialChangemakers to address this critical gender gap. It is a special episode for us, not only because this is an issue close to our hearts, but also because Becky is one of Janine's co-founders.
ExponentialChangemakers is the only global private membership network focused on connecting and supporting women in the first 10 years of their careers.
We discuss:
Reflecting on Janine's transition from high-flying corporate leader to early-stage founder, we note:
Are you an entrepreneur who started their career in the corporate sector? Have you experienced burnout? Or perhaps you struggle to identify and communicate your strengths, or are a woman early in your career rethinking your career ambitions. We would love to hear from you. In this week's Top Tip episode, Becky and Amy reflect on Nithya Prabu's recommendation for entrepreneurs and leaders to:
We discuss:
Nithya has published a range of books, including motivational poems. From her 2017 collection 'Lionness on Fire', Amy reads the opening to,
'The Universe and You'
You are not inferior.
You're not negligible.
You are not an excuse.
You are exclusive.
You are significant to this world.
You are an answer to the prayers
of this universe, for a purpose
which you and you alone
can accomplish.
The universe wants you,
desires you, demands you
to be here.
That, my love, is the reason
why you are here
in the first place.
Forget what others have
to say about you.
Fall in love with you,
submit yourself to the universe
as it tries to work its way
through you.
We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we have. We would love to hear your experiences with values, purpose, goals, reflective writing and any other distinctions you have taken from this podcast. In today's Top Tips episode, Amy and Becky reflect on Kerstyn and Suzi's warning:
"Don't kitchen-sink it: keep it simple. It's all about the problem."
We muse how easy it is as entrepreneurs and instinctive innovators, to try to do everything, and be everything, to everybody. Instead we think about:
Amy asks, when you say yes to one idea, what are you saying no to? The 3 P’s can help you refine your focus and clarity on how to organise your resources:
Finally, Becky flags the importance of taking others with you, and nurturing relationships when you implement change.
Do you share our tendency to 'kitchen-sink' it? How do you get clear on what to say yes to, and therefore say no to, too? We would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Please rate, review, and subscribe to The MindStyling podcast and newsletter.

About Heather Lyons and Blue Shift CodingWebsite: https://blueshiftcoding.com
Heather Lyons is the co-founder of Blue Shift Coding, a company on a mission to empower young people to be more than tech consumers, to be digital creators!
Heather originally trained as an architect, but had always worked in technology as a user experience (UX) designer.
In 2013, Heather was approached by some mums who were keen for their children to learn to code. Heather had been teaching computer-based design at university level in London and had children of my own. She was also passionate about empowering children to create with code as opposed to simply consuming technology through yet another device. With this in mind, she set about teaching code. Their first term started with eight children in her garden! Those eight children all re-enrolled and they soon started running after-school clubs at a nearby girls’ school.
Now Blue-Shift offers online classes, after school clubs, holiday camps and private tuition to lots of young people who are getting excited about being tech creators

In this week's Top Tips episode, Becky and Amy celebrate Kate Dimbleby's Top Tip:
"Ask yourself questions. Keep talking to yourself because you'll find some really interesting answers. Ask is that true?"
As business leaders, an ability to step back and understand the context within which we are making decisions is invaluable for our personal and business' growth.
Reflective Practice gives us the tools to gain perspective. We ponder how to reflect effectively:
We discuss Rolfe's simple three step model to support reflection which moves you forward. Ask:
1. What? What was I trying to achieve? What happened? What were the consequences? What patterns, habits, strengths, weaknesses have I demonstrated?
2. So What? What does this teach me? What does this imply? What other knowledge could I have brought to this situation? What resources could I have used? What could I have done differently?
3. Now What? What do I need to do to improve things? What broader issues need to be considered? What do I need to work on and learn about? What shall I do differently going forwards?
Move from big picture reflections, to the critical next step. Keep asking those questions, positively and pragmatically!
We would love to hear about your reflective practices and how you enable yourself to keep moving forwards. Please connect with us on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter using the links below; and subscribe to The MindStyling podcast and newsletter.

We discuss the challenges of how to stick with an idea, and persist against the odds as you transform it from just a niggle in your head into a service or product that people love and want to buy.
As an entrepreneur doing something not done before, in a way not done before, validation is unlikely to come easily.
We ask how to:

We reflect on the importance of a positive, empowered money mindset for entrepreneurs. Looking at how limiting beliefs ingrained from birth can hold us back, and what we can do to overcome them, we discuss:
We ask who are you to stay in the way of you? We discuss how to move from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance and growth and recommend you:
Please share with us your experiences around money: is this an area of strength for you, or is it still a work in progress? Perhaps it's an skill set you really struggle with? This week, Amy and Becky sit down to share stories and ponder on the challenges and wonders of finding and doing what comes from the heart. First though, we start with the complexities behind Keri's rallying cry - 'you are not your circumstances.'
We reflect that:
Becky invites Amy to reflect on her career journey to find purpose, from advertising, to television, to adult education and EdTech, to her current eleven year preoccupation with 'what helps humans shine?'
Purpose can be found in many places, and there's not just one answer for each of us. It could be in one or many areas. Perhaps in:
Research shows that our core motivations for work are not focused on salary, but rather the opportunities for:
Perhaps it is this 'MAP' which can help us plot a route out of our circumstances.
Do you agree? Is this your experience? Please share your stories with us using the social media links below. Are you managing to do what comes from your heart? How have you managed to grow beyond your circumstances? What helps you shine? We would love to hear from you.

In today’s Top Tip episode, Amy and Becky reflect on Jillian Kowalchuk’s advice to,
“You need to build yourself first”
Are you secure in yourself? Who you are? What you stand for?
Amy and Becky get under the skin of what this means in practice. How can we get more comfortable with trusting ourselves to make decisions, take action, and move through challenging times?
We reflect on:
When we are secure in ourselves – who we are and what we stand for – moving forwards with clarity and confidence becomes possible.
We would love to hear what you have found helpful in your journey. What have you done – what are you continuing to do – to help you build your sense of self and find the strength to keep getting back up when events knock you down? Dr Chen Davies' Top Tip urges us to remember,
“It is a marathon. You have to pace yourself…. Be patient - things will happen, when you try your best.”
In today’s episode, Amy and Becky reflect on how we can keep going, despite no evident results. We open with Chen’s reference to Chinese Bamboo, the fastest growing tree on the planet. Its seed lies dormant for years of watering and fertilizing before finally shooting through the earth, growing at an astonishing rate of 1.5 inches per hour in its fifth year of life.
How can founders and professionals keep showing up, even when results aren’t yet apparent?
Together we reflect on the four key areas which can help us all sustain a STAR performance. STAR stands for:
· Sustain sustainable behaviours
· Tune in and turn up positive thinking
· Activate your strengths and celebrate your successes
· Remember your relationships
We invite listeners to:
Keep an eye on the future. When growth comes, will you be able to respond or will you be just too exhausted? Ask “Am I healthy?” “Can I keep this up?”
Take care of your daily habits – sleep, exercise, eating well.
Create space for learning. A learning mindset can turn a tricky situation into something rich and meaningful, in turn fuelling growth.
We notice:
The power of moving from “I can’t” thinking to “How can I?” questioning.
How tuning into your strengths and successes – micro and macro – amplifies your positive thinking and capacity to do your best work (cf. Sean Achor’s excellent TED talk, ‘The Happy Secret to Better Work).
We remember:
How our relationships and care for the important people in our lives are so often at the heart of our purpose.
We ask:
Who are the people you are getting up for every day?
Please share with us your experiences of pressing on. How do you build your resilience and enable yourself to keep moving forward? We’d love to hear from you via the links below.

Caz Ike’s Top Tip was to learn how to be restful and relax your mind one short moment at a time.
In today’s episode, Amy and Becky reflect on their different responses to this perennial challenge, and invite listeners to get curious about what works best for them.
Together we reflect on:
We note how our needs are so often seasonal, changing over time, and differing according to our circumstances and personalities.
We ask how can mindfulness help us as business leaders and entrepreneurs?

About Caz Icke and SoleSenseWebsite: http://solesense.co.uk
This is the first episode in our series featuring the 2021/22 Innovate UK Women in Innovation award winners. More details about the programme can be found in the links below.
Caz Icke is a specialist Physiotherapist with over 13 years of neurorehab experience both in the UK and Canada, and is currently practicing at the Frenchay Brain Injury Unit in Bristol.
Caz founded SoleSense in 2018 in response to the chronic under-resourcing within the UK health system which often results in lack of therapy intensity for those that need it most.
SoleSense uses wearable technology to provide a digital rehabilitation platform, where real-time biofeedback is delivered to the user to enhance balance and gait performance outside of therapy contact time.
Caz has recently won one of the "Women in Innovation Awards' from Innovate UK and is set to develop her second prototype and prepare for multi-center clinical feasibility testing next year.

In this episode Amy and Becky reflect on the top tips from Olga Kravchenko of Musemio: “Just do it!” and “Don’t be afraid to follow up with people you haven’t spoken to in a while.”
Join us as we ponder how easy it is to get caught up inside our own heads, and let distorted thinking stop our instinct to reach out for support and feedback. We ask:
Are the concerns holding you back, true? Or are they just FEAR (“False Evidence Appearing Real”)?
Might your contact have been following you with interest, without you being aware?
Showing up consistently; asking the hard questions; being passionate, vulnerable and able to connect even when things aren’t perfect – these are all behaviours people respect and support.
So often your greatest supporters are invested in you, even more than your product or business.
Reach out – “just do it!” You’re likely to be pleasantly surprised at your reception.
We’d love to hear where you are on your journey and how you have navigated your fears and hesitations about contacting others for advice and support. Let us know what works for you and helps you, “Just do it!” using the links below:

Our guest and founder of Tortoise, Katie Vanneck Smith firmly believes that we can all do work that we believe in and enjoy. Her point is that we’re living the 100-year life so don’t spend it by doing something that you don’t love and doesn’t bring you joy.
Work matters to us, we have to recognise that. On this top tips episode we discussed:
We ask the question:
We think you can. Listen to our stories in this episode to help you turn up the joy factor in your work.

Polly Crook from The HOW People was straight to the point with her Top Tip:
“Find your passion!”
In today’s new episode, Becky and Amy reflect on what has helped them find and live their passion, and what has held them back.
Are you living a life that serves you most powerfully? Or is it one designed by Society and what your ego tells you is, or is not, the right path to follow? Why have you made the choices that you have?
We talk about how you might find your passion, and the value of identifying the key ingredients to your best life. Do you find constructing a Wheel of Life – or even a Pizza of Life! - helpful?
Or is Ikigai more meaningful for you? Helping you to find your sweet spot for life, where your passions and talents converge with what the world needs from you and is willing to pay you for.
What if the pursuit of being paid to do what you love, simply won’t fulfil your financial goals? What if you are doing something you love, but in a toxic work environment you hate? What if your clarity of thought is clouded with self-doubt, anxiety, or depression?
How can you clear the space for yourself to consciously design a life you love?
During our discussion we reference a range of excellent books, and even a video, to help you take practical steps, and give yourself the clarity to:
start to move forwards
say no to the things which aren’t working for you, and
believe you can build a passion-filled life.
Our recommendations include:
‘The Code of the Extraordinary Mind’, by Vishen Lakhiani
‘The Passion Test’ by Janet Attwood and Chris Attwood
‘What Colour is your Parachute?’ by Richard Bolles
‘How to get a job you love’ by John Lees

In today’s episode we explore the Top Tip prescribed for us by Dr. Jo Watkins of the HOW People:
“One small change or decision every day”
Join Becky and Amy as they celebrate how a focus on one small change each day, or getting 1% better, can vanquish overwhelm and help defend us from the perils of perfectionism. We reflect on how continuous improvement builds momentum in business – and in sport.
How does breaking a massive goal down into small steps help you?
What are the metrics that work to power your success?
Do you get the support you need?
And how do you pace yourself in business, so you can keep delivering the high performance when it arrives?
During our discussion, we reference ‘Winning!’ by Clive Woodward (Hodder and Stoughton Ltd. 2004).

Cat Wildman from GEC gave us a Top Tip that we love.
“Never, never stop ever. So get knocked down, dust yourself off and try again, and just keep on coming on it. If it's something that you think about all the time, and it's a real passion in your heart.“
Becky and Amy discuss how they use their work ethic to push forward and be resilient. We talk about how you can never give up on the passion but get curious about the signs sometimes you might not be fulfilling your passion in the right way. There are so many ways we can fulfill our purpose sometimes we can get lost. Immense work ethic and passion have to be channeled well.
Our advice is to be wise. Be wise to both your strategy and your instinct (head and heart). So that when you get to where you want to be you show up as the person you want to be.
Where are you on that journey?
Are you close to giving up and you need motivation and support to keep going?
Are you pushing too hard in the wrong direction?

Amy and Becky talk about Nic Ponsford's top tip:
You are not going to have all the skills you need so build a support network around you.
Many of us are very independent, driven people and we have often been trained, through our upbringing to be very individual in our approaches to our work. This is an admirable trait, however, we are never going to have all the skills we need to make the changes that we want to make, so we have to get the right network around us and learn how to pull from them.
Some of the thing that can help us to do that include:
You don’t have all the skills you need, you need to draw from the community

Today's guest is Joyann Boyce an Inclusive Marketing Consultant and Founder of The Social Detail. The company works with SMEs within the technology sector to maximise their impact through social media. The Social Detail has worked with a range of organisations including the Coke GB, Adobe XD, SETsquared and Future Space. In her three years of running the agency, Joyann has placed data & inclusion at the heart of her approach to marketing, from idea to creation to reviewing and consumption.
Joyann is a fierce advocate for diversity and inclusion within marketing and tech. Seeing a gap in the stock photo market, she partnered with the SHIFT project to create a portfolio of diverse stock photography. The project was featured on the BBC.
She is currently a Data Fellow with the South West Creative Technology Network, researching how bias within data can be positively used to benefit marginalised groups. The fellowship is allowing her to connect her two passions for data and diversity by exploring the depths of data and machine learning. Her research shows that when dealing with AI, the primary focus has been on trying to eliminate any bias in it. Instead, she believes we can learn more about creating unbiased machines by flipping the bias in favour of marginalized groups and then comparing the outcomes.
We discussed:
💫 The Role that technology plays in exclusion and how we can turn it on it's head to create inclusion.
💫 Why it is important to understand your own biases and be transparent about the biases that you have
💫 Taking care of Mental Health

If we are ambitious and we want to see a positive change in the world, we must remember that we are not alone. There are whole networks of people that you can work with to create the future that you want to see.
THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE OUT THERE, YOU CAN FIND YOUR TRIBE!
What if your current tribe is not one that you have a value-connection with? How do we remove toxic people:
Becky and Amy share their experiences of value networks and how we build them.
We discuss the challenge of building collaborative networks and how to overcome the fear of others who have the same goal. The common win-loose mentality of an entrepreprenuer can often work against us, collaboration and partnership is powerful when you have an alignment of purpose.

Char Lawrence's top tip is enough to get any of us up and moving.
I think that we all know what it is to feel energy bubbling up inside, a desire to do something. Char says when you feel, just do it.
Are you ready to satisfy that drive? What gets in the way of you acting on your desires?
We answer the question, how do you tap into the passion, purpose, and ambition? Sometimes we have that fire but we don't know how to satisfy it or act on it.
Sometimes your drive can get in the way of acting for your passion and purpose and send you off down a path that is based on somebody else's idea of success and gets in the
Maybe your purpose isn't about what you are going to do. Maybe it is about waking up, listening to yourself, and being your best self at that moment, on that day.
What matters most to you today?

Char Lawrence, founder of the Mogul Minded Group and N9ne cosmetics spoke to us about how her incredibly popular magazine, The Mogul Minded Magazine, was born from her frustrations about not being able to get positive stories from the BAME community into the mainstream media.
She discusses how all her businesses began organically to address the needs that she had, from the hair care products created from her own natural hair journey, which was triggered by a comment from her daughter; to the events business that was set up due to the inaccessibility of other networking events.

When your mind is running around in circles how do you stop it? How do you get out of your head?
Emily does something physical to stop her ever-whirring mind. For her, it can be anything, including taking a sledgehammer to her wall or putting up a shelf.
Becky has used exercise "almost like breathing" as a survival mechanism to switch off her mind and uses it as a buffer from work to bed.
Amy has to exercise before mid-day and she loves to walk.
What challenges do you come across when you are trying to find something physical to do.

Nat's top tip is one that we have found to be very important. When you are an entrepreneur or very driven by your work it can be very easy to put your whole self into it and to make your work your identity. That works fine when everything is going perfectly but it means that you can get very swept up in the ups and downs leading to mental health challenges and burnout. Having more than one priority can act as an anchor in a storm.
Amy and Becky discuss how this tip has worked for them and the methods they use to break down different areas of their life to help each one thrive.

You want something bad enough - it will come to you - it just might not come to you in the way you expect or want it to.
Katie's top tip is that there is always another way, in her case, she has been very focused on making her passion project a reality and turning it into a thriving business. She has done that and she attributes positive problem solving to it:
"I’m always looking for the solution in the positive and the positive in the solution."

The key point is to develop relationships that are honest and not always putting rose tinted glasses on your scenario. This is something that takes time.

We talk to Jess about how she's a "flyer" not a "fighter" under stress. We ask her how she has successfully found a co-founder and mentors (clue: she has never had to ask for mentors). She has a pragmatic approach to entrepreneurship, which we have learnt a lot from and we hope you do too.
SPOILER: just like Zara, Jess gets mistaken for a waitress at investor events. The issue is not with the women - it is with the conscious and unconscious bias in the industry.

We discuss Shivani's top tip: Which uses her favourite basketball analogy
"The game isn't over until the buzzer goes off"
So if you are determined to reach your goal and you are still in your game then keep going.
We also get under our own skin and look at how we respond to stress. Becky talks about being "dopamine" triggered and how. that can be a bit scary because the feeling of adrenaline makes her "flighty". Amy gives some tips.
Don't forget, the tips will not work in the same way for everyone. Let us know what works for you.

Shivani Lamba, Founder, Brightlobe, was born in Sweden to Indian parents, moved to London then the States. By a very young age she was coding, then researching at the National Institute of Health at age 16. She attributes this to knowing at an early age that it was up to her "to make a life for herself".
Whilst working at the NIH, Shivani became interested in the long term impact of children being out of school, after a long journey the ideas around this become the educational games that she creates with the team at Brightlobe.
She discusses biohacking, optimising her physical and mental health and why she is remaining positive about the impacts of students being out of school due to COVID-19.

Zara Nanu, CEO Gapsquare, told us that when she is facing barrier's or waining confidence she asks herself "what's the worst that can happen?". Is this something that works for us? Not always and not in all situations. Sometimes it is a great thing to ask yourself and can be the boost you need to move forward.
Dr Becky Sage and Amy Armstrong discuss if it works for them, and their clients, what the alternatives are and how we can create confidence for ourselves, whether it is for meeting with investors, big clients, presentations & performances, working with your team or dealing with challenges at home.

When Zara Nanu, CEO of Gapsquare had children everything changed. Where there had been no barriers suddenly there were barriers.
Gapsquare was born from the question: is there a way to overcome those barriers together? As groups of women? Using technology and data to inform us of the disparity and to show us when improvements are made?
There is a fine balance to be had between going for her own dreams and being there for her children. Being in a start up is not exactly the easiest route to make change!
There is also a balance to be had between business development and technology. She explains how she overcomes the catch 22 of needing business to fund the product and having a product that is ready to sell.
In part one Zara introduces us to her vision and mission, the way she works with her team and the way she parents.

Zara Nanu:
Zara Nanu, CEO of Gapsquare, has had her fair share of challenges, especially when it comes to finding investment as a woman. So her team have allowed the saying "Go Big or Go Home" to become a rallying call (even though it started as a joke).
In this episode we discuss the issues around the lack of diversity in tech, especially when it comes to building AI and some cringeworthy situations Zara has found herself in as a woman trying to get money from a predominantly male investment community.
Finally Zara shares her tip for staying resilient. Why don't you try it for yourself.

In the summer of 2018 Dr Becky Sage, CEO Interactive Scientific and Amy Armstrong, her award winning clinical hypnotherapist and leadership coach had the same idea at the same time: Let's use podcasting as a way to tell stories of a diverse group of entrepreneurs and give our community of entrepreneurs the tips and techniques that help us to stay confident and resilient. We recognised that we were still hearing the story of "Superhero CEO's" usually white, cis, straight, men even though we were surrounded by a peer group with inherent and acquired diversity with a range of stories to tell.
When we were shortlisted for the BBC Radio 5 Rachael Bland podcasting award we record a background and now we are sharing with you.
