The Seed Podcast: Transforming the World: Recent Episodes

Rowena Suarez

The Seed Podcast brings you stories about initiatives, projects and advocacies that are giving birth to a new world. A better world, you can say. Yes, the world, as we know it, is crumbling and in disarray, but there is also a new world that is being born. I believe that there is hope, and that in each one of us is a seed that has been planted for us to grow and nurture. We are the seeds that have been planted to transform the world.

It is a joyful thing to have had this conversation with Tonio Flores who shared in this episode what Farmlab is doing in helping communities grow food and, at the same time, regenerate landscapes or ecosystems in a way that helps reverse the climate crisis. "Our generation is thinking of that" he says.

When I looked at what Farmlab has been doing and when I listened to Tonio during our meetings for a potential project a couple of months ago, it felt as if they have been doing this for many years already, and then it occurred to me during this conversation that this is because the practice of food production and farming for him has become more than just a physical activity but a daily meditation.

Join us in this conversation as if we are gathered in a circle with a cup of coffee, tea or tsokolate.

Check out https://www.facebook.com/farmlab.ph to connect with Tonio.

Catch the story of Light of Hope PH and Jovie's inspiration in starting and pursuing (why he's doing what he's doing) the project.

Light of Hope PH is 1 of the 10 winners of the British Council COP26 #DestinationZero Climate Innovation Challenge - the only one from the Philippines out of 123 entries from 43 countries. It aims to help mitigate climate change and uplift the lives of the less privileged off-the-grid communities through clean renewable energy technologies and Internet of Things technologies.

It all started as a CSR activity that Jovie founded and co-initiated with workmates (shout out to our friends at Lexmark!) in 2017 when they started providing solar night lamps in a bottle. Jovie now does this work full time and the earlier prototype has been evolved. Light of Hope PH has started deploying an off-the-grid solar power system enough to power 2 LED bulbs for the whole night and charge up to 4 mobile phones per day for the family beneficiaries.

Check out lightofhopeph.org to know more about how you can support the project.

I loved listening to John Ray who in this episode shares about how his journey into wellbeing and personal growth started him on a path to reconnect with Hilot, being one of the traditional Filipino modalities of healing, and with rituals. My friend Karen of the Online Healing Community calls him a Babaylan in the city.

John Ray was a religious brother who was led to discovering other forms of connecting with God, or the Divine, and the spiritual world, as indigenous cultures would do, so it was interesting for me to dive into how he has integrated his spiritual formation with his healing practice - which includes Reiki, Hilot itself and Ifugao rituals.

He believes that this disconnection with the Self in this time is what we most need healing from.

You can connect with him through https://www.facebook.com/johnraynagas and check out his upcoming courses and classes.

In this episode, Sherry Manning, the Founder and Co-Executive Director of Global Seed Savers, lends us powerful perspectives on seed sovereignty.

Sherry enlightens us with issues that revolve around our ability to replant seeds time and time again and to allow the seed nature to give life, sustain life and regenerate life on earth.

She also shares how a group of seed savers in the Northern part of the Philippines has been able to rebuild their farms after a typhoon through the seed library that they have built together over the years. The same group of seed savers have been able to supply food in Metro Manila when streams of food supply had been cut off due to the lockdown situation in 2020.

Global Seeds Savers has been building communities of farmers, individuals, organizations who are planting the "seeds" of the future. You can be a part of it, invites Sherry. Check out https://globalseedsavers.org/ to participate and help support the work.

In this episode, Asha Peri talks about how our food choices can become a force for change - to regenerate our health and that of the planet. The call to action, she says, is to learn how to cook our food, to start growing it, to save seeds and build our connection with nature.

This conversation made me realize that I don't know and haven't tasted half of the vegetables in the Bahay-Kubo song. She invites us to reinvent the song and include mineral-rich root crops and leafy greens. Asha bursts with so much creativity, she has made pizza crust and mozarella out of cassava and has found ways to cook different parts of plants that would otherwise be discarded.

Having newly-transitioned to farm life, she shares with us how her work is becoming more and more integrated with the lives of the farmers in the community where she and her mom lives now.

In this episode, I spoke with Isabel Grafe about Gentle Birthing or the Conscious Birthing process. She shares with us beautiful birth stories and traditions of birthkeeping.

"Isa" as we fondly call her was born and raised in Germany where there lives a very strong tradition of midwifery. After her undergraduate international diploma in social work, she pursued the three-year education to become a midwife.

After medical training in three hospitals, she was fortunate to join a very well-established worker-cooperative birth center in Hamburg.

In the midst of her journey, she was compelled by her heart to serve in Leyte, in the Philippines, at a birth center established by Ibu Robin Lim in response to Typhoon Yolanda (or Haiyan). She has been serving for and supporting the movement for gentle birthing in the Philippines and all over the world.

You can go to https://www.yourmidwifehour.com/ to get connected with her.

Pardon the clicking sounds somewhere between 00:07:00 to 00:14:00 - couldn't find a way to edit it out but it goes away after that. Isa tells a beautiful story in that timeframe.

Enjoy and please share with friends!

In this episode, I spoke with Teresa Ruelas about creating a culture around food, farming and community-building. We talked about how that process of tending to the world is deeply connected with our purpose and meaning.

Teresa Ruelas is the co-founder and executive director of the Communities for Alternative Food Ecosystems Initiative or CAFEi. I was with "Tressa" when we co-founded the GMO-Free Cebu with some friends Cebu and the Cebu Farmers Market, probably, the only physical hub for organically-grown produce and naturally-processed products in Cebu, Philippines. I was also with her in the Stop Cebu Flyovers Movement which later became The Movement for a Livable Cebu. We are co-carriers of the Movement for Imaginals for Sustainable Societies through Initiatives, Organizing and networking or MISSION. She is a curator of collective co-creativity!
