Your support helps cover all our costs allows Truants to continue running as a non-profit and ad-free platform. For our second Truancy Sessions of 2025 we're excited to bring on Dj Wiggles, an artist who in the ever-evolving landscape of electronic music has managed to cultivate for herself a multifaceted breakthrough career that seamlessly blends DJing, event curation, her own label and a wonderful mix series to boot. Initially immersing herself in dance music whilst at university in Brighton, inspiration from a community of like-minded individuals and local events paved the way, before a move to London marked a significant evolution in her artistic development. Living near the now closed down Pickle Factory, the eclectic late-night sets of artists like Margaret Dygas, Jane Fitz, and Call Super, combined with the music of peers such as re:ni and Batu, helped shaped her distinctive approach to DJing and curation. Kicking off kinetic in 2019, the platform initially started out as a radio show on 1020 before branching out into a mix series on Soundcloud a little later. Since then, kinetic has flourished, hosting events across South London and establishing a regular home at the much beloved Ormside Projects.. With a tingling take on contemporary bass music and delicately left-field sub heavy sounds, previous guests have included Dub Athlete, upsammy, Jurango and Nono Gigsta to name just a few. More recently she inaugurated kinetic as a label with the release of 5RVZ's Trench EP, marking yet another milestone in pushing the platform forward. For this Truancy Sessions mix, Dj wiggles has crafted a deeply-considered trip that embraces emotional subtleties and textural transitions. Reading between the lines with tracks needing to find their placing in the electronic landscape, she's able to weave together tracks that resist easy categorisation, highlighting the beauty  of those in-between moments with a layer of unpredictability.

No tracklist for this one so you'll need to get your dig on everyone.Stepping up for the latest entry in our Truancy Volume series is Gabriola, a much-cherished spiritual resonator of all things euphoria. A true purveyor of trance and progressive bliss, Gabriola possesses an uncanny knack for unearthing the most elevated and transcendent gems. Their long-running Midnight Vapour Trail show on NTS—now an impressive 82 episodes deep, each an epic two-hour voyage—serves as both a testament to their encyclopedic knowledge and an invitation to immerse in the golden age of trance. As co-head of the London-based label Magicwire, Gabriola continues to amplify their vision, releasing a cascade of their own radiant, trance-inflected productions while curating boundary-pushing projects. Notably, bringing the legendary John Beltran's Placid Angles alias back into the spotlight, releasing a stunning follow-up to his seminal 1997  album in 2019 with First Blue Sky. Gabriola’s Truancy Volume encapsulates the world and Silver Surfer-styled avatar they've so vividly created—a thrilling journey through driving big-room basslines, soaring synths, and jacking kickdrums. As the press release for their Spirit Mirror release beautifully states:NOW CLOSE YOUR EYES, PAUSE QUIETLY, FOR A FEW MOMENTS, AND BE HERE NOW. ATTUNE YOURSELF WITH YOURSELF AND THE UNIVERSE AND, SO, WITH ALL OF US. IF YOU ARE MOVED BY THE SPIRIT, THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE SPIRIT WITH US.

Truancy Sessions S02 E04: zizi K (@ziziik)Artwork by Lolo (@lolo-lolo-lolo-96)Interview: https://truantsblog.com/2024/truancy-sessions-s02-e04-zizi-k/ ‎Access the download and tracklist on our Patreon (patreon.com/truants). Having recently relocated to Europe, Medellín-born DJ zizi K reflects that the energy and passion for music she’s encountered isn’t so different from her city back home - "it’s pretty similar, just in a different setting". Growing up during Colombia’s golden age of hardcore punk, it’s clear how the genre’s raw drum-driven energy and rebellious attitude could serve as a gateway to equally intense electronic music. Yet, there’s an introspective depth and balance to the way she navigates her tastes and approach to DJing. Over the past year, she’s been a resident on Internet Public Radio with her themed morning show, Look Inside, where she invites DJs to curate mixes of the music they’d love to hear when waking up or making their first cup of coffee. The results are a heartfelt blend of styles, from downtempo breaks and low-slung house grooves to delicate electronics and ambient soundscapes. A designer by day, it’s no surprise she’s completely embraced the curative side of being a DJ. She shares that she loves crafting mixes with a fluid, cohesive flow, but what truly matters to her is ensuring they resonate emotionally. Her Truancy Sessions mix showcases this beautifully, with tracks from Skee Mask, Vince Watson, Joe Koshin, and Nathan Alexander seeping through with those sincere euphoric undertones.

Truancy Sessions S02 E02: FNKD (@fnkd1)Artwork by Lolo (@lolo-lolo-lolo-96)We head to London today for the second episode of season 2, with FNKD taking the reins with a two-hour mix that covers a wide range of musical styles. Known for his monthly radio show on Aaja Music and his role managing Corsica Studios’ in-house night Small Talk, we caught Felix delivering standout selections at this year’s Gala Afterparty at The Carpet Shop and knew we had to feature him in the series. Featuring tracks from Steevio, Zenker Brothers, Asusu, Mark Pritchard, and more, the mix carries a captivating, chapter-like flow as FNKD transitions effortlessly in a way that covers a whole host of bases. It’s a true testament to his genre-blurring expertise, moving from low-slung house grooves to techy steppers to classic dubstep, culminating in an ambient, psych-out jazz finale. This is a mix that invites repeated listens, but we’re confident just one is enough to leave an impression.Access the download and tracklist on our Patreon (patreon.com/truants). His eclectic taste, shaped by 90's house, dub, disco, r&b, and hip hop, infuses his selections with a unique perspective, pushing him to seek records unbound by genre or era. As a dedicated vinyl enthusiast, o.rayan has cultivated a global network of record-pooling communities, unearthing and digitizing rare gems that rarely surface elsewhere. In this Truancy Sessions mix, o.rayan captivates with a kaleidoscope of intoxicating sonic rarities, offering a glimpse into his world of carefully curated, heartfelt sounds. Journeying through hidden corners of electronic music, the mix spotlights a series of bright and evocative selections from some of house music's unsung visionaries. Beginning with a nod to his Lebanese heritage, the mix flows ever-deeper into enveloping tracks marked by punching drums, lush pads, and drifting melodies, while the diversity of o.rayan's musical exploration shines through in multilingual vocals that bridge cultures through rhythm. His passion for vinyl is evident in the mix's impeccable quality and singular curation, each track revealing his exquisite taste for surreal, body-moving rhythms. Truancy Sessions S01 E08: Sabrout (@sabro96)Artwork by Kushagra (kushlet on Instagram)After seven incredible mixes, we conclude the first season of Truancy Sessions with a DJ who perfectly embodies the ethos we envisioned when starting this series. Our goal was to build community and provide a platform for exceptional DJs we’ve met during our travels and connected with online as global friends. Born and raised in Cairo and based in New York for the past decade, Sabrout has been quietly emerging as a rising star with his distinctive approach to musical eclecticism. A former member of the music platform Delayed, Sabrout crafts sets that are both deeply personal and versatile, showcasing his extensive knowledge of dance music. His mixes for Palestine Forever—a collective dedicated to supporting humanitarian aid and raising awareness for Palestine—and for the NYC-based Salsabil, of which he is one third, exemplify his ability to seamlessly blend acid house, techno, breakbeat, ambient, R&B, and hip hop, all infused with genuine emotion. Sabrout describes his Truancy Sessions mix as a product of a breakthrough approach, focusing on intuition rather than overthinking. The result is a beautifully curated journey of rolling grooves, with a standout moment at 20 minutes when Dreamrdreamr’s "Zone 4 Booty Call" elevates the mix to new heights. You can download Truancy Sessions S01 E08: Sabrout in 320kbps and view the full tracklist on Patreon here (patreon.com/truants). Truancy Sessions S01 E07: Bratches (@taylorbratches)Artwork by Kushagra (kushlet on Instagram)Coming up as a raver in the Denver electronic music, whilst also formally raised as a dancer prior to that, electronic music and DJing offered Taylor a way for her to keep moving and slowly discover her own language of movement. Starting out as DJ after a move to Los Angeles, it was another move to New York where the regular gigs started to land, making rounds in the club circuit at places such as Public Records, Good Room, The Bunker and Bossa Nova Civic Club. She's since toured across the US, taking her love for bass music and fusing a mixture of dubstep, acid, electro, DnB, and jungle with an aim of moving people both physically and spiritually. Having used dance as a profound healing tool for most of her life, her talks on 'Rave as Ritual' are an informative insight on the way a night of dancing can be a deeply therapeutic experience. Recently dropping 'Taylor' from her DJ name to help seperate her work in the healing arts, Bratches is a new reinvention of herself as a DJ and producer as she looks to the future. You can download Truancy Sessions S01 E07: Bratches in 320kbps and view the full tracklist on Patreon here (patreon.com/truants). Truancy Sessions S01 E04: Kuscheln (@kuschelntime)Locking in with a new episode of our Truancy Sessions series with a mix of hi-energy hypnotics from Toronto-based DJ and tastemaker Kuscheln. An all-round purveyor of playful, thought-provoking dance music, he has become a staple figure in the Toronto underground, with his Klub Ferret parties offering nights of steamy dance-offs and queer revelry to a soundtrack of the hottest house and bubbling bass. His mix for us today is party perfection, rolling through with an infectious palette of late night mind twisters, soaring grooves and big room breaks. As the curveball-loving fans that we are at Truants too, we've completely lost count of the amount of times we've wheeled up the Spice Girls remix in this mix. An unreal statement of flow and taste over 100 glorious minutes. We've put the mix as well as a little photo diary and selection of the tracklist up on our wesbite. Truancy Sessions S01 E01: suade (@whoissuade)New year, new sounds! Introducing Truancy Sessions, our latest mix series dedicated to elevating the underground music scene. With eight episodes per season, we'll be looking to amplify the voices of emerging DJs and longtime Truants friends, all while collaborating with talented designers and artists. Our mission is to cultivate connections and celebrate people with an ear for music from every corner of the globe, be it people we've seen on our travels to friends we've made at festivals and clubs. For our first season, we'll be collaborating with the exceptional designer Kushagra for all things artwork, and for our debut episode we have a seamless blend of mesmerizing grooves from San Francisco-based suade (@whoissuade) for a transportive musical experience. Here's a glimpse into what suade has in store:"This mix is a cruise through some records I know I’ll love forever - rolling, percussive, driving, and euphoric sounds. Put it on for a nice drive, a long run, getting ready for a party, or maybe just to hype up your work day. I spend a lot of time in the shapeshifting, hyperactive world of bass-driven music and I have an equal love for timeless grooves, long blends, and dreamy sounds. Sometimes these feel like mutually exclusive worlds as a DJ. The latter is what I’m reaching for these days, in a slow and reflective period of my life, and what I bring to the mix. It consists mainly of records from the mid 90s to early 2000s with some newer releases sprinkled in there. I decided to avoid maximalism and opt for a steady ride through a few key ideas. I’ve been wanting to record something like this for a while, so I’m super grateful and happy to be sharing it here. I hope this hour and twenty four minutes locks you in and is something you can come back to. Enjoy"We've put the mix as well as a little photo diary and selection of the tracklist up on our wesbite. livwutang is the alias of rising Seattle-based DJ and artist Olivia Klutse. Moving to the city from Denver in 2014, she has quickly become an integral and vital member of Seattle’s underground music community, forming numerous friendships and helping organize events for a number of the city’s budding parties. Truancy Volume 271 sees livwutang put together a mix inspired by dusk window views, coastal road trips, and long meandering walks around south Seattle. She tells us the mix is a reflection of her state of mind and the transitional Seattle weather at the moment, sprinkling in subtle moments of euphoria and ascending atmospheres to joyous effect. From Aybee’s rhythm-shifting “Broken Dreams,” to last year’s relentless party starter “Belter” by Off The Meds, the mix is 70 minutes of uninterrupted vibes, coming to a spine-tingling conclusion with Rum & Black’s 90s rave classic “Slaves.” The selections are immaculate, mixed craftily by a DJ that’s become beloved both at home and shores abroad.

Having formed a trademark sound that flirted between electro, EBM, acid, wave sounds, post punk and industrial, Identified Patient's penchant for club and genre experimentation always left the door open for a producer wanting to keep things fresh and interesting with every release going forward. His debut EP, The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, landed via Common Thread in 2016 and since then he's found a regular home via Pinkman, dropping four releases of industrial percussion for the Rotterdam-based label. With a release on Dekmantel last year and another one for them coming up in June we caught up with Job to discuss old Prodigy tapes and Suzuki Swifts, his incorporation of samples in his productions, scoring a short love film for Otto Laan, and the extra step he's been taking in the minor details. Describing the forthcoming EP as being more focussed on beats, rhythm, lower frequencies and the dancefloor in general, it's a direction that's helped him move forward in terms of his skill and technical prowess as a producer. His Truancy Volume, an interlocking hour and a half of tempo switches and unpredictable selections, is utterly body-rocking. It's a representative of what he like's to play in his sets these days, with breaks and more bass orientated tracks fully at the forefront here. It's a blistering spectrum of sounds and a snapshot of a producer and DJ posied for a future in creativity and big records.

As Gabber Modus Operandi, vocalist Ican Harem and DJ Kasimyn have spent the past couple of years raising hell across their native Bali and beyond. The duo connected over their shared love of disparate musics, including metal, grindcore and noise from the local punk scene, regional sounds like dangdut, koplo and gamelan plus footwork, happy hardcore and experimental styles – though they’ll tell you they don’t differentiate genres so distinctly. These influences all seeped into the two albums they have under their belt quite naturally, and the group took the sounds of 2018’s Puxxximaxxx and 2019 follow-up HOXXXYA to the global circuit last year. As a live act, they thrive: Kasimyn handles deck duties while Ican Harem’s MCing goes beyond rapped hooks to involve exhilarating screeches and guttural bellows, all the while brandishing chains and bringing a crucial sense of physicality to the stage. The pair deliver a seismic, hour-long barrage of a mix for Truancy Volume 262, only letting up to leave you properly winded.

You will, of course, be familiar with the work of Thomas Martojo. The internationally recognised dance music brand, Dekmantel, continues to be a signature moment within a claustrophobic festival landscape. On the other hand, the Dekmantel label serves as a reliable litmus test of who you should be aware of in electronic music. Growing up in The Hague, Martojo founded the Dutch imprint along with his child- hood friend Casper Tielrooji and the two were fast putting on parties with the likes of Jeff Mills, Robert Hood and Moodymann. Martojo’s sound is rooted in classic Chicago House and tough Detroit Techno but over the years he’s become more closely recognised for the percussive, low slung grooves associated with Dekmantel Soundsystem. Martojo recently began playing out under his name - using it as an opportunity - to return to the uptempo, harder sounds of his youth. We caught up with him to talk local scenes, inclusivity and how to cultivate a family of artists.

Everything SHYBOI seemingly touches is delivered intuitively and with intent. Her sets may not be planned, but they feed off the crowd’s energy in a sort of unspoken symbiotic exchange. She may also casually mention a documentary she’s worked on, without letting the audience in on the fact it’s been several years in the making following a decade of research. SHYBOI maintains both an air of mystery and a gravitational charm; her modestly and intellect undeniable through social media. In a club atmosphere, her sets are pure rapture, delivering catharsis in the way of provocative vocals, enrapturing beats, and an intoxicating energy that demands physicality. In the art world, she explores women empowerment, marginalized bodies, her Jamaican heritage, and the power of queer expression. Through both her involvement with Discwoman and her solo work, SHYBOI has consistently pushed boundaries and broken barriers to give queer black women more of a voice in this world, and we’re honored to share her high-powered mix and personal thoughts. Dubbed “the SHYBOI experience,” Truancy Volume 260 is both raucous and liberating, and we hope brings you a moment of relief and release during this incredibly difficult time. Just as the opening line of her mix playfully teases, “y’all ain’t ready!”

Doc Sleep is an unsung hero. Low-key and understated, she's an accomplished DJ and producer, as well as being part of the two-person team behind the consistently excellent Jacktone label. The label has amassed an incredible 70 releases since 2013, putting out tracks from the likes of Gayphex Twin, Roche, Experimental Housewife, CMD, and past Truancy Volume mixers Isabella and Russell E.L Butler.  Originally from the Bay Area but now based in Berlin, she is a regular at clubs like Tresor, as well as being heavily involved as a resident and curator for the Room 4 Resistance collective. Her first official release under this name came in the mid-2010s, but she's been producing in one way or another a decade longer than that, and like many of her peer group started off in "guitarish" bands. Nowadays she appears on her own label as well as the similarly busy Dark Entries. We talked to her about her origins, influences and the current state of the label among other things, while she contributes a stellar mix that builds with class and elegance from subtle beginnings.

Hank Jackson's music has been notoriously difficult to pin down, as his shifting sound has stretched in simultaneous directions over the years. Nevertheless a constant thread in his productions are their explorative nature, defying genre conventions to forge a personalized path. Over the course of his releases on defining US electronic music labels such as Mister Saturday Night, Proibito, and most recently, his own label, anno, Hank Jackson has continued to craft his own vision of techno, one both texturally multilayered and evocatively introspective. His DJ mixes are no different, defying expectations with every set to deliver captivatingly creative selections. He's captured the attention of both local NYC clubs and international DJs alike, sparking a recent set at New York's renowned Sustain-Release, and most recently, an upcoming DJ tour in Japan. We're excited to showcase his singular sound, as Truancy Volume 258 ventures into "psychedelic zippy vibes" in am intoxicating thrill-ride through experimental, techno, electro, UK garage, grime, glitch, and dub. Provocatively trippy with its hypnotic percussion and moments of ceremonious chanting, Hank Jackson's mix is a dizzying dream that resonates long after you wake.

Soundcloud: @channeltres

There’s few people who currently embody the confluence of modern music like Channel Tres does. On the one hand, the soulful heart of dance music lives at the centre of his music, taking us through from deep Chicago house to dub techno effortlessly. At the same time,  his West Coast synths and lyrical nods to mainstream R&B and rap remind us of the limitless possibilities of artists that grew up listening to music laterally, timelessly and free from the confines of genre. In a 2014 interview with Truants, Kerri Chandler expressed his love for the ongoing house revival but felt like newcomers were missing out on an opportunity by not incorporating vocals, singing and live performances into their craft. Perhaps this is exactly where Channel manages to push the envelope in a new way that has enticed us all, with his commanding vocals narrating perspectives that we're not necessarily used to hearing on a 4/4 beat, and live shows that incorporate dance and carefree performance, asking the audience to submit to freedom in a way that the average DJ set doesn't.

With only two EPs and ten tracks in total released under the moniker, his polished output and its magnitude have led him to open up for an impressive array of artists and their respective audiences, from Robyn to Tyler, the Creator. There's a traction surrounding Channel Tres that predicts a vast future for the Compton native. For Truancy Volume 257, Channel takes us through a journey of gratitude starting off with Curtis Mayfield, taking us through the likes of Osunlade and Todd Terje to Ebo Taylor, Tupac as well as his own remix for Tyler. We caught up with Channel on his current journey as an artist, creative processes and his performances.

Raised in Los Angeles but based in Brooklyn since 2015, Akua has spent the past five years redefining and cultivating a sound within techno that has assuredly become her own. As one of the many talented DJs that makes up the Discwoman roster, her passion for research and recontextualization in the realm of techno, has been a driving force in packing out dancefloors over 2019 - a year which took her across the globe more than ever. We caught with Akua to discuss the whirlwind and transformative year that was her 2019, being captivated by the wild energy of New York during her first summer in the city, playing mainstage at this year's Sustain-Release, and how she first fondly connected with the fast-paced, adventurous mixing style of early Jeff Mills, Colin Dale and Dave Angel. As our first mix of 2020, Truancy Volume 256 is Akua flowing at her most natural, contorting through a range of influences as she picks out cuts from Chicago and Detroit visionaries. Scan 7, Blake Blaxter, Mike Dearborn, Robert Armani, DJ Rush and Paul Johnson are all well represented here, and her recognised approach of pairing timeless classics with today's most contemporary techno producers is packaged up with her distinct toughness and trademark energy.

An enterprising spirit that rose to prominence through the world of experimental club music, Air Max '97 has streamlined his sound and renewed his focus the last few years. Part-in-hand to the time he's put into the curation of his label DECISIONS, the release of his debut album Nacre last year also proved a pivotal achievement in terms of distilling his new ideas into something succinct and impactful. With Batu recently tapping him up for a 12" on Timedance, he seems to have found a perfect stride working within the realms of functionality, groove and  sound design. We caught up with Oli to discuss the geographic immersion of his debut LP, his collaborative productions with AYA, the output and experience of running his own label, and his pop-sensibilities from working on music with Don Sinini. His Truancy Volume, which he describes as being a faithful representation of his current club sets, uses DECISIONS material as the core foundation of the tracklist. Shifting tempos, rhythmic patterns and thick textures into an hour long mix, it's a mind-bending trip shelling through all sorts of club flavours. New York's DJ Voices is drawn towards the unexpected. We spoke at a Japanese restaurant in Dublin (where she'd later play to a crowd of Halloween revellers and well-dressed 20-somethings), and she pointedly said that she would play a whole set of up-tempo tracks slowed down using the CDJ's wide function (which can slow or speed up the track as much as 100%). It's a tactic she makes use of at several points during her Truancy Volume, which manages to feel both like a club set and a soundtrack mix made just with you, the listener, in mind. Having recently watched a lengthy interview with DJ Voices conducted by Willie Burns for his Talk Radio series, we opted against rehashing her total backstory here. Instead, we talked about her current European tour, her work as booker for New York club Nowadays, her goals as a DJ and the music in her record bag.

Hailing from Philly with roots in Maryland, the digital-dwelling, performance-minded sound art and music duo SCRAAATCH load their knapsack of self-determinative songs onto the platter for Truancy Volume 208. Their series of numbered performances each possess unique character thanks to a consciousness and deliberation in their concept and implementation, often through abstract electronics, noise, glitch and field recordings. “SCRAAATCH No. 12”, is their latest – a mediation on Kanye’s “Ultralight Beam” with organs, vocals and all. Recordings of the physical sets often eventually join the online realm alongside the pair’s monthly NTS Radio show, described as “sounds fugitive to the club, the web, the street and the future” and regularly featuring guests such as FAKA, Jessicunt and L’Rain.

The group is formed of two artists, one who can appear as E. Jane or Mhysa and another who surfaces as chukwumaa or lawd knows. Mhysa, a persona engaged with black divadom, is best known for her THOT FANTASY mix series and her enthralling 2017 album on Rabit’s Halcyon Veil, fantasii. lawd knows frequently works with Mhysa outside of SCRAAATCH and has his own locker full of productions and edits to boot. Their practice is emblematic of a constant, continuous growth through collaboration, participation, discussion and action where process is paramount. Through their intrepid attitude to the possibilities of sound, they make a vital case for creating your own space and searching for its potential. This quality permeates their mix for us in all of its chaotic fun, chucking everything from Benny Benassi basslines and Lil Uzi loops to disintegrating breaks and floor workouts into the same blender to make a protein shake for the freaks. Over the past two years, the coastal city of Durban in South Africa has spearheaded the sound of the rapidly growing gqom scene. Throughout Durban townships, the percussive mixture of hip-hop and house elements had primarily spread through a series of file-sharing sites, with Facebook groups and WhatsApp threads acting as hotspots for sharing artists' latest creations. In one of gqom's more fascinating ascents, local taxi companies – in an attempt to seem more attractive to rival departments – started playing gqom in their minivans, as wonderfully highlighted in the YouTube documentary Woza Taxi - Gqom Secret Stash Out Of The Locations. In the same way the internet and social sharing helped gqom reach new audiences throughout Durban, gqom soon found itself spreading across the globe, with labels and journalists in London and Rome quickly championing the sound. One of the genre's most prominent producers – a merit that's propelled his reputation as the 'King of Gqom' – is DJ Lag. Our 194nd Truancy Volume is a storming snapshot of the relentless dynamism of gqom and DJ Lag's masterful presentation of the sound. We're incredibly proud to have a true pioneer as part of the series and we had the pleasure of speaking to DJ Lag about the mix he has kindly provided us with.

Hailing from the Bay Area, FOOZOOL and 8ULENTINA established a regular performance space for local interdisciplinary artists working beyond the paradigms of genres and unilateral approaches to sound through their night, Club Chai. Now, Club Chai has expanded into a greater operation including radio shows, guest mixes, workshops, art shows plus a label arm featuring the staggering Club Chai Vol. 1 crew compilation released earlier this year. Whichever medium they convey it through, their message is as ambitious and vital as ever: visibility and opportunity for non-Western artists to present their own narratives, unconstrained by the tradition and linearity of the sociocultural, historical and artistic status quo, prioritising diasporic, femme, queer and trans voices. For FOOZOOL, this involves her Armenian heritage as a core part of her sound practises alongside filmmaking and creative production, while 8ULENTINA has elaborated on their focus on “diasporic fantasy” across sound and installation art featuring fashion and crafts in a previous interview with us.

There’s a constant sense of interdisciplinary inspiration and fluid storytelling throughout their individual DJing practises as well as their own productions. Having hosted 8ULENTINA’s excellent Truancy Volume last year, we’re extremely thrilled to be able to present a joint mix from FOOZOOL and 8ULENTINA – a rarely recorded collaboration usually reserved for the parties themselves. Ahead of their UK tour next month, the Club Chai duo serve up a tantalising taste with Truancy Volume 184, packing riddims from across the globe along with a moment to remember for all you Whitney fans out there.

A few months ago we asked some questions to London-based producer and DJ, Ahadadream, just as he got set to drop the second release on his own label More Time. We discussed his inspirations and mantras, his dream Boiler Room lineup and how he went about producing the tracks for that very second EP. Titled Movements, we described it as a four-track monster brimming with nervous energy, and a hefty release of no-nonsense club music that thrived off the pulsating drums of his own heritage. As well as More Time, Ahad works at Boiler Room and has also spent the last two years running 'Ahadadream Presents', a night showcasing some of the best from the UK, with people like Novelist, DJ Q, Funkystepz and Flava D all having played in the past. An interview didn't seem quite enough of a spotlight for an emerging DJ on the rise, so without much hesitation, we asked if he'd be interested in contributing to our Truancy Volume series in the coming months. Heavily inspired by percussive UK funky rhythms, the mix provides some serious extra energy, drawing for afrobeat and dancehall cuts alongside club anthems from A$AP Ferg and Alex Coulton. Here's what he had to say on the mix.

"An hour full of percussion which has directly influenced my productions and tracks that have played a recurring, vital part in my sets for the last few years. I tried not to just pack this full of new dubs and exclusives but instead create a reflection of myself as an artist which will stand the test of time and stay true to me over a long period of time."

Our 146th Truancy Volume comes from Iglew, a producer based in grime's square waved legacy and who caught our eye last year with a series of unreleased tracks, rips and his 'Urban Myth' EP released on Mr. Mitch's very own Gobstopper Records. Since then he's remained relatively quiet throughout 2016, but continues to reach out and force us to take note with tracks featured on nearly ever single Boxed mix that circulates the web. From seeing Iglew shell it down at Come Thru in Leeds last year we're excited to showcase a 45 minute mix that is beautifully composed, highlighting the more introspective aspect of his music. With twelve of the fifteen tracks being unreleased, be prepared to journey through melodic bliss. We also caught up with him for a quick Q&A ahead of his upcoming release on the Boxed EP and tried, unsuccessfully, to get out of him what the 'Emglew' collab on E.M.M.A's new Dazed mix was all about.

DJ NJ Drone has been occupying precarious borderspace for some time, tip-toeing around genre in his production of frantic, hi-speed abstractions. Overdriven, overloaded, NJ Drone is like déjà vu, an anomaly simultaneously familiar and distant. Travelling through his ‘mind club’ at 150+ bpm gives the sense of breaking through space-time, of continuous momentum accompanied by bizarre vocal incantations that affect the mind like the hideous but kinda cute soundworld of Fitch and Trecartin. But at the end of the day, we break through the mind to find a body lurking beneath, we find embodied ritual beyond weltschmerz, beyond acidic regurgitations of technological positivism. While NJ Drone’s speed may lend itself as a metonym for accelerationism’s privileged desires for cyber-disembodiment, ultimately we are directed towards a firmer politics of the body as resistance in real space (that some of the more optimistic amongst us might hope to find on the dancefloor). In the words of Laboria Cuboniks: “no more futureless repetition on the treadmill of capital, no more submission to the drudgery of labour, productive and reproductive alike, no more reification of the given masked as critique.” Rediscover yr bod with DJ NJ Drone!
