Another new face is Kyle Lyons, Winemaker at Apricus Cellars, who brings the 2025 Cabernet Franc Rosé and the 2025 Old Vines Riesling. Apricus Cellars focuses on small-lot, high- quality wines. When the Coghill and Main families moved to the Okanagan to build Neighbourhood Brewing, they fell in love with wine country and had to get involved. With their roots in the brewing industry, they were told by some that getting into wine was a “Foolish” endeavour, so they became Foolish Wines. We welcomed Kyle Stewart, Winemaker for Foolish Wines, who poured two of his wines, including the Spark 2024 Sauvignon Blanc and the Mischief 2022 Tempranillo (BC VQA). Tender Hope is a family-run winery that makes interesting, small-batch wines and has fun doing so, using traditional methods and minimal intervention during winemaking and aging. We were joined by Efi Perel, Owner and Winemaker at Tender Hope Winery, who brought two VQA wines for us to taste: the 2019 Blanc de Blanc Traditional Method Sparkling and a 2022 Pinot Noir.

This Labour Day weekend is the last long holiday weekend of the summer and features four winemakers preparing for the upcoming harvest. Leandro Nosal, Winemaker at Tinhorn Creek, is from a four-generation winemaking family in Mendoza. He has a degree in Agricultural Engineering and experience working in several wine regions worldwide, such as Bordeaux (France), Catalunya (Spain), Piedmont (Italy), California, Mexico’s Valle de Guadalupe, Niagara (Canada), Marlborough (New Zealand), and the Okanagan. Dave Marchand, Winemaker at Lastella Winery, established his background in wine through work in the hospitality sector, including roles as Wine Director at Vancouver restaurants like CinCin, Fraîche, Le Crocodile, and Après 2. His experience includes time at Panther Creek Cellars in McMinnville, Oregon (now Elizabeth Chambers Cellars). He currently oversees production at La Stella. John Weber, Winemaker at Orofino Vineyards, co-founded Orofino Winery in the Similkameen Valley with his wife Virginia, who previously worked as a nurse. They moved from southern Saskatchewan, purchased a vineyard in Cawston in 2001, and set up Canada’s only straw-bale winery. They have been producing wine in the region for nearly 25 years. Maurizio Maurizi is part of a new generation of Italian wine professionals. Born in 1983 into a family of winegrowers in the Marche region, he studied Viticulture & Enology at the University of Florence. Maurizi began his career at a co-operative winery in Ascoli Piceno and joined the Mezzacorona group as an agronomist’s assistant in 2006, which included work in Sicily and Trentino. He currently manages winemaking operations and supervises over 400 growers supplying grapes to Mezzacorona in northern Italy.

BC Food and Wine goes Down Under this week with the help of two celebrated Australian Women who have been global ambassadors for Australian Wine and powerful role models for women working in wine for decades. Sue Hodder, Wynns Coonawarra Winemaker, was awarded the Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine Winemaker of the Year award in 2010, and she also took home the 2017 Australian Women in Wine Awards Woman of Inspiration. Hodder was also recently inducted into the prestigious James Halliday Hall of Fame, cementing her status as a wine industry icon and a true legend of Coonawarra wine. Jane Ferrari was named the South Australia Legend of the Vine recognizing her outstanding contribution to the industry. Her career spans many years and is punctuated by her great ability and passion for communicating and storytelling about wine. Ferrari is a past WCA Wine Communicator of the Year (2012) winner and was inducted as a Baron of the Barossa in 2013, with a career in winemaking and communication, including 25 years at Yalumba Wines, as well as time spent at Wolf Blass Wines and Rockford Wines.
