In the books of Jonah and Micah, we meet prophets who were sent to different people groups, each with a message calling them to return to God. In Jonah, we find a man who is reluctant to deliver God's message and instead runs away, enduring calamity and trouble as a result. In the end we see that God calls us to serve all people and give our lives to lead them back to him. No one knows who is the true author of the book of Hebrews. It is a book written, most likely to a community of the early church who was struggling in keeping their faith amidst all that was happening around them. Hebrews is a book of faith. It encourages the reader to be strong in their faith and points to examples of the "heroes of the faith" to guide and inspire. This is the book of Hebrews. The book of Galatians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Galatia. The Galatian church was in a state of confusion because other teachers came to the city after Paul with a different, more legalistic, message and tried to get them to adopt old burdensome laws rather than living in the grace of Christ. Paul wrote to get the church back on track and to encourage them to live in the freedom that Jesus provides. This is the book of Galatians. The New Testament tells the story of Jesus and the Church. All four Gospels -- Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John share a different perspective of who Jesus was and what he was here to do. We've completed our journey through the Old Testament. We are now in a period often called the "Silent Period." It's a 400-year gap between the last story in the Old Testament -- Nehemiah -- and the first story in the New Testament -- Luke. Though the Bible does not say anything about what happens during this time, there was quite a bit that went down, preparing the People, freshly returned from exile, for their long-awaited Messiah. We talk about the promise that God made right from the very beginning, to restore order to the chaos of the world, and see how that promise has been slowly progressing through the Old Testament to make everything ready for the arrival of Jesus. This is what happened between the testaments. This teaching is part of our 2022 series, "Anchored,” and is part of our journey through the Scriptures.. The books of 1 & 2 Kings tell the story of the kings of Israel after David. David's son Solomon, though wealthy, wise, and powerful, falls away from God towards the end of his life and begins a cycle that the nation follows after his death. The kingdom is divided into two during the reign of Solomon's son, Rehoboam, and then the divided kingdom goes on a journey of ups and downs with dozens of other kings and queens, all leading to a time of exile from their homeland. God is constantly calling us into a new life -- to leave behind the old, destructive ways we have lived and embrace all that he has in store for us. Jesus came to pave the way for us to walk into this new life, and the Holy Spirit guides us to this new life. He guides us through conviction, where he points out the areas we are still holding onto the old and pushes us to leave it behind to embrace the new. This teaching is part of our July 2021 series, "The Promise of His Presence” You can't receive new life while holding on to your old life. (Ephesians 4:21-24) The Holy Spirit will help bring this new life through conviction. Sin is not doing what God wants. (Romans 12:1-2) Pleasure: We won't let go. Pride: We won't confess. Prison: We can't get out. You experience the transformation that God has for you. You close doors to the enemy and live in victory. You are able to discern God's will and walk in your destiny. You have the promise of eternal life with him. (Romans 10:9, Romans 6:23, Ephesians 4:27) This episode was recorded on July 25, 2021 during our 10:30am worship service. Life isn’t easy! We all go through challenging seasons, no one is exempt from it. Where does your help come from in those difficult moments? We all have to make a decision on who or what we will put our trust in. Do you put your trust in your money, possessions, job, career, in your own abilities and talents or do you put your trust in people? In Psalm 121, we are all reminded who we should look to for help.
