Happy New Year and welcome to another episode of Late Talks on Air on the Nancy Duffy show for Sunday, January 1st, 2023.
A true story of redemption, my guest for this week's show shares a testimony unlike any I've ever heard. Author and now pastor, Herman Mendoza, built an empire in Queens, New York, selling cocaine up and down the eastern seaboard, along with his brothers, throughout the late 1980s and into the early 90s.
Seemingly, against all odds – through prison time, affairs, depression, and only after truly realizing and understanding the repercussions of all he had done, Mendoza somehow salvages a marriage and rebuilds a life diametrically opposed to the rut carved over years of obstinance and crime. Of course, he doesn’t do it on his own, which you’ll learn more about in the episode.

Show Notes Welcome to episode no. 84 of the Nancy Duffy Show!
On April 29th, 2021, Vanessa Shields debuted her latest book in the quiet of a film set with the help of her talented filmmaker partner, Nicholas Shields, and in the company of close family and friends. It was poignant and beautiful (I've included the video clip below).

Vanessa and I connected to record this episode shortly after. And then, quite serendipitously, we connected again. Just two months after this recording, I walked into the local cafe and heard my name. I looked over, and Vanessa was having tea with a friend, waving. Oh, to hear a familiar voice who knew me! It's been a while at that (with moving and all)—what a welcome sight.
These past two years have forced us all to experience work, friendship, love, and loss differently from before. For starters - funerals - which were never fun, to begin with, have been anything but typical. Visiting family in a hospital? Forget about it. Nothing is normal. But it doesn't mean that nothing good can come from terrible circumstances. Vanessa Shields wrote a book amongst the chaos of this sorry pandemic because someone she loved was leaving - and by the time the book was finished, she had already gone.
Maria Giuditta Merlo Bison -- Nonna, Maria
Thimbles, which made CBC Book's 2021 Spring Poetry List, is a poetic tribute to the life of Maria Giuditta Merlo Bison, Vanessa's grandmother, Nonna, Maria, who had been suffering from dementia. Maria was a seamstress from a small town in northern Italy who came to Canada to forge a new life that would profoundly affect so many. Listen in as Vanessa talks about this generational love story laced with life lessons, love, grief, and humour.

Her passion for writing was discovered at a very young age through the vein of writing in a journal. Her first book, Laughing Through A Second Pregnancy – A Memoir, was published by Black Moss Press in 2011 to rave reviews. In April 2013, Shields edited a poetry anthology entitled, Whisky Sour City (Black Moss Press). I Am That Woman (Black Moss Press), her first book of poetry, was published in January 2014 and had its third printing in 2015. Look At Her (Black Moss Press) launched in September 2016, and went into its second printing in December 2016.
In 2017, Shields was part of a Group of Seven poets published in an anthology about the history of Windsor, entitled Because We Have All Lived Here (Black Moss Press). In June 2018, the chapbook Feminism: Revisit, Revise, Revolutionize: A Two-part Harmony was published by the League of Canadian Poets’ Feminist Caucus with Shields as co-editor/introduction writer. She writes a monthly blog for the League of Canadian Poets on being a writing parent. She is passionate about promoting poetry and the writing life and is often on a jury (or two!) for major awards and/or contests. She has self-published a collection of children’s poetry entitled From A to Ziffery Zanks with Windsor illustrator Glen Hawkes. This collection launches in the fall of 2019. A new collection of poetry, (working title) Thimble will be published by Palimpsest Press in 2021.
Her poetry, short stories, and photography have been published in various literary magazines. She mentors, guest speaks, teaches creative writing, and does Poetry On-Demand (on-the-spot poetry-writing that helps make poetry fun and accessible for all). Today, I’m airlifting you to the far-off shores of another continent – all the way to Bangalore, India to hear the coming together of a group of three talented and tenacious musicians who I have come to know and adore.
Theirs is a story of a culmination of styles, personalities, and genres (blues with hints of rock and jazz) to form the making of a group called Midnight Poppies. They write, practice, and perform throughout many parts of the world all the while working some pretty demanding day jobs.
Band members include:
Sangeeta Hosea vocals, guitar, songwriting (and the one who pulled the group together) Rajni Shivaram, vocals Adrian Moses, guitar
At the time of our conversation, the Midnight Poppies were about to release four new singles during the first wave of the pandemic. Songs included: Bottle’s empty, Bittersweet Love, Something That Wasn’t Mine, and Little things we left behind.

Last week's issue of St. Mary's Independent highlighted the achievements of local CMAOntario nominees Callie McCullough and Darcy John. Originally from Stratford, McCullough is up for Rising Star of the Year and Songwriter of the Year – sharing the songwriter nomination with fellow writer, Scotty Kipfer, for "After Midnight." Darcy, originally from St. Mary's, Ontario, is one of five nominees for Male Artist of the Year.
The 2021 CMAOntario Festival & Awards, initially set to take place at the end of May, have been delayed until early fall. The rescheduled event will take the format of a drive-in concert over three days from September 3rd to 5th at the Ancaster Fairgrounds in Hamilton. The announcement comes in response to Premier Ford's call for greater COVID restrictions, and it means that nominees and fans alike will have to wait a bit longer to learn who's won!
But that doesn't change all the good 'feels' for the nominees – Callie McCullough and Darcy John joined me from Nashville for a lively conversation about road trips, foot-long hot dogs, and what's up next in their world of music. Fred Jacobs is the founder and president of Jacobs Media a research and consulting firm. He’s an entrepreneur who has launched projects like Techsurveys an influential research tool to help identify trends and patterns for the industry. Fred was the one who came up with the Classic Rock station format when the schism between older rock and alternative rock first began to form. And when smartphone technology came along, Fred delved into the app industry to make sure that the mobility of radio wouldn’t be left behind. And so he founded Jācapps seeing the development of more than 1200 apps generating more than 25 million downloads.
Fred is an inductee of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame (2005), a recipient of Radio Ink’s Luminary Award (2011), and the Outstanding Alumni Award from Michigan State University’s College of Communication Arts. Ryan Wrecker is the radio personality and host for Overnight America, a call-in talk show that airs weeknights on KMOX FM in St. Louis. Ryan moved his family to St. Louis in 2017 but originally hails from just outside Detroit and is a proud alumnus of Central Michigan University. Ryan’s career has been far-reaching – in geography as well as scope. Before moving to St. Louis, Ryan spent time “up and down the radio dial” in cities like Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin. He worked his way up to the position of Program Director before reconciling in a space synonymous with his ultimate passion – on-air somewhere between midnight and just before the witching hour, keeping American’s company while literally talking them through those things that keep us up at night (from the silly and serious to everything in between).

Never before have countries been under so much pressure to secure their citizens against an invisible enemy - at a time when people, products, and services have become so globally intertwined.
I was going through my calendar today and noticed how just months ago, the notes I had scribbled in the margins screamed yesterday’s normal. My daily goals look much different now. But some of the concerns I had expressed back then – namely about the future of work, have actually only become accentuated during this time.
This pandemic, in addition to our health concerns, has brought the issue of work (or lack thereof) and our means to earn a living, front and centre. In this episode, we discuss the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), which started Monday, April 6th, 2020, as a temporary measure to provide funds for individuals and families while helping to shore up the economy until the next new normal. This is a plan that had to come about quickly – and so it’s no surprise that it’s not perfect and now seems merely a start. If you’ve been excluded from this benefit or have yet to apply, please stay tuned.
Irek Kusmierczyk, the Parliamentary Secretary to Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development, and Disability Inclusion, joins us on today’s show to help answer some of the questions and concerns expressed by listeners of the show. COVID-19 has brought to the forefront the importance of people and services that we may have all taken for granted, like the delivery people who have become a lifeline for our households, our healthcare workers, the frontline staff in your grocery store. Thankfully our government has put into place the COVID-19 Economic Response Plan to help those who need it most – a plan that had to come together quickly, which includes the new Canada Emergency Response benefit, set to commence this week.

Today’s show focuses on a community facing two crises at once. For weeks we have been told that our number one defense against COVID-19 is to wash our hands. But imagine being here in Canada, or the United States, arguably a couple of the most advanced countries in the world, and not having the water to put this mainline defense in motion.
During this episode, we check in with George McGraw, founder of DigDeep and the Navajo Water Project, to discuss how a lack of water resources is putting the already-vulnerable communities, like Navajo Nation, at even greater risk. We’ll also talk about a new study that will hopefully help better direct future infrastructure efforts in the US – and perhaps help spur on similar efforts here in Canada.
And tomorrow, Saturday, I’ll be airing another show featuring a conversation I had earlier today with Canadian labour lawyer, Shelley Brown from Toronto. We’ll be discussing the latest emergency measures here in Canada as they relate to workers and employers.

Some of you may know him from the 4L water challenge, where he challenged the public to live off of no more than 4L’s of water a day to raise awareness and funds to fight the water crisis that many marginalized communities now face in the United States. George is the founder of Dig Deep – and The Navajo Water Project, a community-managed utility alternative that brings hot and cold running water to homes without access to water or sewer lines. Summary Welcome to episode no. 71 of the Nancy Duffy Show! In this week's interview, we talk about fatalism with respect to the views on the future of work and technology and the change of circumstances that many of us might be finding ourselves in as technology progresses. Are we overthinking things?
If you tell me, we’ve been here before (in a space where automation threatens jobs and livelihoods), true. ATM’s did not replace all bank teller jobs, for instance, but rather, they changed what bank tellers do – although smaller communities were certainly affected as some locations were shut down in favor of others. But what is different this time around is the mass collection of data and the growing rate of artificial intelligence that is now feeding off of this data. To be clear it is not merely the automation of simple tasks that I find uneasy, but the replacement of work that requires the kind of thought that artificial intelligence is now learning… like how Sophia the humanoid robot is learning how to formulate relationships right down to the expression on her face.
Just over a year ago, MIT assembled a Task Force on Work of the Future "in an attempt to understand the relationships between emerging technologies and work and to explore strategies to enable a future of shared prosperity." In light of their recently released 2019 Fall Report, we asked Dr. Elisabeth Reynolds, Executive Director of the MIT Task Force to join us to talk about where we stand on the future of work; and whether or not we should be optimistic or cautious about what lies ahead. ↑ About Dr. Elisabeth Reynolds Dr. Elisabeth Reynolds, Executive Director, MIT Industrial Performance Center and a lecturer in MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning

"Say Yes Before You Know How"
Show Notes Welcome to episode no. 70 of the Nancy Duffy Show! I read something this morning that Christy Write posted on her Instagram today – “say yes before you know how.” And it kind of falls in line with today’s show. Typically business shows and podcasters will interview business owners who have already arrived, and then ask them how they got there. They’re the ones making millions, on the cover of Forbes. That’s not today’s guest – though she has achieved success on so many other levels.
Given that many of you are in the process of deciding what to make of your future, I thought I would give you a glimpse into the life of someone in the process of creating hers. Vanessa Shields has been a guest on my show before in her capacity as a writer. But a year ago she made the decision to use her craft in a different way – which would take her from being a creator and writer to facilitating the creative process for others. Now what’s also so very interesting about this week’s conversation is how it starts. We intended to keep our chat down the business track, but as you’ll hear, we get a little side-tracked, because just like in real life – stuff happens. This episode goes well beyond business; it visits resilience, loss, the meaning of work and then takes up residence in creation. Her passion for writing was discovered at a very young age through the vein of writing in a journal. Her first book, Laughing Through A Second Pregnancy – A Memoir, was published by Black Moss Press in 2011 to rave reviews. In April 2013, Shields edited a poetry anthology entitled, Whisky Sour City (Black Moss Press). I Am That Woman (Black Moss Press), her first book of poetry, was published in January 2014 and had its third printing in 2015. Look At Her (Black Moss Press) launched in September 2016, and went into its second printing in December 2016.
In 2017, Shields was part of a Group of Seven poets published in an anthology about the history of Windsor, entitled Because We Have All Lived Here (Black Moss Press). In June 2018, the chapbook Feminism: Revisit, Revise, Revolutionize: A Two-part Harmony was published by the League of Canadian Poets’ Feminist Caucus with Shields as co-editor/introduction writer. She writes a monthly blog for the League of Canadian Poets on being a writing parent. She is passionate about promoting poetry and the writing life and is often on a jury (or two!) for major awards and/or contests. She has self-published a collection of children’s poetry entitled From A to Ziffery Zanks with Windsor illustrator Glen Hawkes. This collection launches in the fall of 2019. A new collection of poetry, (working title) Thimble will be published by Palimpsest Press in 2021.
Her poetry, short stories, and photography have been published in various literary magazines. She mentors, guest speaks and teaches creative writing, and does Poetry On Demand – on-the-spot poetry-writing that helps make poetry fun and accessible for all. As creator and host of Mouth Piece Storytelling, a storytelling competition, Shields is able to share her love of storytelling with her community. She’s a young thyroid cancer survivor – who works every day to improve herself – physically through exercise, but also by creating new and healthy food choices and recipes. Tara Shannon at The Dublin Cookery School in Ireland Parmesan Pecan-Crusted Salmon Serves 2 Ingredients 2 salmon filets, about 6-8 oz. Each and with the skin on Salt for seasoning the fish 4 tbsp unsalted pecans 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp grated parmesan 4 Fresh Basil leaves (or an equivalent of dill), rough chopped A squeeze of fresh lemon if desired Instructions: Recipe for Tara's thyroid-friendly fresh salmon dish
Place fresh salmon onto a foil-lined baking sheet. Season with salt. Preheat oven to 425F.
Place Pecans, parmesan, and olive oil into food processor and blitz a couple of times so it forms a slightly moist, yet crumbly mixture. Remove from food processor, divide in half and pat down on top of salmon.
Roast the salmon for 10-12 minutes, or until it feels barely firm to the touch when it's pressed with your finger. (Don't overcook; the fish will continue to cook for a few minutes when you take it out of the oven.) Serve hot, garnished with Basil, dill and a squeeze of lemon if desired and a salad like the Mixed Green Salad with Spiced Pecans, Citrus, Goat Cheese & Honey Mustard Vinaigrette or the Arugula, Avocado & Tomato Salad. It was during this same year that the United States was reeling from the overwhelming loss of its young men in Vietnam while grieving over the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr., and Bobby Kennedy.
In today’s show, in a fashion inspired in part by New York Times article: 50 Years Later, It Feels Familiar: How America Fractured in 1968, we pay homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the messy year of ’68 as it correlates to present day.

An award-winning emcee and event producer, Bevin’s monthly body-positive dance party was named one of the reasons New York City is the Best City in the World by Time Out New York.
She moved to Los Angeles in 2016 and is excited to be part of an upstart community that turns the stereotype of thin-obsessed Hollywood on its head. Bevin was voted top entrepreneur in 2011 and a “Woman We Love” in 2014 by Go Magazine. It’s a real-life story put to music and lyrics about the Mann Gulch fire of 1949. A team of firefighters parachuted in near the upper Missouri River, where a fire blazed a mountainside forest in Montana. As the team approached the fire, the winds changed suddenly; and the fire expanded just as fast – It would claim the lives of 13 firefighters. Sounds a lot like what happened in 2013 with The Yarnell Hill Fire in, Arizona, which killed 19 firefighters, members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

Our next segment begs the question – was the US election that just passed, democratic enough? Political correspondent and staff reporter with The Wall Street Journal, Laura Meckler joins us to discuss how the Electoral College affected the perceptions of the outcome of this election, but first some facts:
Hillary Clinton won 47.8% of the popular vote; Donald Trump 47.3%. But it’s the electoral votes that count – Donald Trump’s won 290 electoral votes compared to Hillary Clinton’s 228.
In last week’s show, in the character of President Barack Obama, Leslie Odom Jr. sang, “Still I pledge my allegiance to these United, Divided States.”
Alexander Hamilton, the same Hamilton that inspired the now-famous musical in which Leslie Odom Jr performs – said that the purpose of the Electoral College, as he wrote in Federalist 68, was “that presidents would be chosen on the basis of their qualifications, character, and intelligence rather than because of their talents for low intrigue and little arts of popularity.” So everyone got this election wrong - Hamilton included.
But here’s the thing – before people hold up signs "Not my President" - what about the apathy of the 46.9% of eligible voters who didn’t bother to cast a vote? (the highest no-show rate since 1996!) And what about the moderators of the debates? Why were so little questions asked on the macro issues that all Americans – and arguably the people around the world, will have to face tomorrow? About Laura Laura Meckler covers the 2016 presidential race, focused on the Democratic contest, the third straight presidential race she has covered for the Wall Street Journal.
Based in Washington, she also covered the White House during the first Obama term, and after that, spent two years focused on changing American demographics, and the effects of those shifts on politics and policy. When you first tune in to today’s show you’ll hear the sounds of September at Sacred Stone Camp – and they were recorded live by our first guest, Stephen Svenson. If this sounds a bit familiar, many of us, through the reporting that was done through the likes of Democracy Now, were watching the treatment of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and their supporters as they were working to protect their land from the bulldozers and construction crews – who met them with pepper spray and attack dogs on the Labour Day weekend.
Point in Conflict: The Dakota Access Pipeline wants to run a crude oil pipeline under the Missouri River – at Lake Oahe – just a half-mile upstream from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s reservation. The first issue for Standing Rock is their concern for a potential spill – something that would catastrophically affect their culture, economy, and way of life. Their second issue is that the pipeline would pass through areas of great cultural significance – including sacred sites and burial grounds that federal law seeks to protect.
Stephen Svenson is a community organizer, and ally of the original people of Turtle Island. Among other occupations, he teaches Environmental Sociology at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Jan 27, 2013 - Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre - Ottawa, ON Don Ross Don was born in Montreal and began playing publicly (and for money) at the age of just 15. Fortunately he looked old enough to drink by then and was able to play at some of the downtown pubs that featured live acoustic music - exciting times for a person in his youth. Early on he discovered the music of legendary Canadian singer/guitarist Bruce Cockburn and was amazed that such an insightful lyricist could also be a tremendous guitarist. This discovery inspired Don to write his first strong instrumental tunes for solo guitar around this time.
He went on to study composition at York University in Toronto and in 1988, he won the U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Competition. Don has played with orchestras, and has had several records to date, recently signing with Candyrat Records in 2005.
Don has toured regularly since 1989, across Canada, the USA, a dozen European countries, Japan, Taiwan, China, Australia, Russia and India. He has played with symphony orchestras in Canada and Germany, and collaborated live and on recording with Andy McKee, Canadian singer/guitarist Brooke Miller, & Toronto bassist Jordan O’Connor. He also composes scores for television, radio and film, and does production and recording engineering for a variety of other musicians. In addition to acoustic guitar, Don also plays electric guitar, slide dobro and lapsteel guitar, voice, piano, keyboards, bass guitar and drums. Click here to learn more about the music of Don Ross. Brooke Miller Now also in Montreal, Brooke Miller originally hails from Prince Edward Island from a small community where she grew up surrounded by the arts. Brooke started as lead guitarist and vocalist in a loud punk band at the age of 12 – and hasn't stopped since. She's a fan of the music of Bruce Cockburn, Rickie Lee Jones, the Police, and Joni Mitchel - traces of their influence are evident in Brookes hybrid sound. Brooke recently released her fifth album for the German audiophile label Stockfisch Records. Entitled Familiar, the album is a collection of acoustic ballads, and it recently received a nomination for the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik (the “German Record Critics’ Award”), the German equivalent to Canada’s Polaris Prize.
Brooke’s tunes have been heard in recent feature films (The Year of Getting to Know Us, starring Sharon Stone, Lucy Liu and Jimmy Fallon), and on hit television shows (The L Word and Women’s Murder Club). In 2007, she won the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals’ Colleen Peterson Songwriting Award.

This is a special podcast – as on occasion, we at InRetro host what is called the “Coffee House Series.” It’s where we choose a city and a favourite neighbourhood venue, and then we invite some of the talented singer/songwriter’s that we’ve either played on the station or written about in our magazine to perform an evening of live entertainment. It’s a fun evening that allows us to get to know our listeners and readers in person…
But the town of Stratford – they’re a bold bunch. Craig Foster of Foster’s Inn invited us to their neck of the woods to host the Coffee House Series there. This same night was also the Dinner Series Finale, featuring music from String Bone, Emm Gryner, Dayna Manning and Jory Nash!

String Bone is a project based around the talents of songwriter, Barry James Payne, of from Perth County, Ontario, Canada. He released his first full-length album in 2009 co-produced by Shannon Lyon, Chris Giesbrecht and himself. Payne currently plays live with Dan Henshall and sometimes Aidan Keeley on upright bass and Steve Wood on Pedal Steel and often has special guests such as Mary Ashton or Lisa Bates join him on-stage on violin.

Emm Gryner began her career on the wings of Toronto’s independent music scene, where after leaving a major record label, started Dead Daisy Records. She’s a multiple Juno Award nominee and has released 11 full-length albums, including her latest, Goddess. Gryner’s performed with the likes of David Bowie and has been praised by Bono (the U2 front man name-checked Gryner’s ballad “Almighty Love,” from her 2006 album The Summer of High Hopes), as having “one of the songs from the past 20 years he wished he’d written.”

Jory Nash has crisscrossed North America several times, playing folk festivals, folk clubs, concert series and house concerts. Unusual things tend to happen to Jory on the road, and when not legally bound to silence he will incorporate these events into his onstage storytelling. Jory has a lot of stories.
