August is here, and the beginning of Temple’s preseason football camp is marked by another quarterback battle, this one between Penn State transfer Jaxon Smolik and Washington State transfer Ajani Sheppard. We shared our notes from the Owls’ first practice, talked about positions of strength and concern, and answered questions from a full mailbag as we kicked off our 12th season.
And although this was a football-heavy episode, we also talked about why fans should keep an eye out for one more name to be added to Adam Fisher’s Temple men’s basketball roster.

While it was important for head coach Adam Fisher to replenish his roster with nine transfers and an incoming freshman, maintaining some continuity on the roster with a player like rising sophomore guard Cam Wallace was important, too. Wallace, a former start at the Westtown School, played in just 19 games as a true freshman and averaged 2.1 points per game, but a full college offseason in the weight room and a month of workouts with his new teammates have him feeling more confident heading into his sophomore season on North Broad Street. Wallace talked about all of that and much more on this week’s podcast, which also includes part of our interview with class of 2027 Temple verbal commit Jackson Pritts, a 5-star recruit and the nation’s sixth-ranked kicker according to Kohl’s kicking camps.

What’s in a name? Temple forward Sir Issac Herron had plenty to say about that on this week’s episode of The Scoop.
The 6-foot-10 forward who joined the Owls via the transfer portal from Louisiana Tech talked about the origins of his name, recovering from two injuries, and why he feels better than he ever has as he attempts to build upon last season and improve coach Adam Fisher’s frontcourt.
Herron had some high praise for fellow Temple big man Christian Beam and forwards Edwin Suarez and Baboucarr Njie, and we’ll tell you why you should keep your eyes peeled for another Temple football verbal commitment this week.

Temple women’s basketball coach Diane Richardson joined us on The Scoop this week for a deep dive into a roster that includes an even mix of six returnees and six newcomers as the Owls head into the 2026-27 season. Why did Kaylah Turner, Tristen Taylor and Saniyah Craig decide to come back? What could the additions of players like Penn State transfer Shayla Smith and JUCO All-American Myla Benton mean to the Owls’ depth? How is forward Anastasia Bulanova recovering from the knee injury that kept her out last season? Temple’s backcourt is comprised of two point guards head coach Adam Fisher and his staff nearly got prior to last season before circling back and landing them this time around. Former USC guard Jordan Marsh, who joined us earlier this month on The Scoop, is one of them.
The other, former Indiana point guard Deuce Drake, sat down for an interview with us this week to talk about his well-traveled basketball journey that has taken him from Michigan’s Ferndale High School through four college stops and finally to North Broad Street, where he is healthy again after the turf-toe and stress fracture injuries that kept him off the court last season in the Big Ten.
Drake averaged 11.1 points per game and shot nearly 40% from three-point range two seasons ago at Drexel and believes he can surpass those numbers this season en route to having Temple playing meaningful games in March.

Temple literally got a courtside view of what Baboucarr Njie could do when the former UTSA wing guard dropped a career-high 25 points on the Owls back in January and added 10 rebounds for a double-double. And now that Njie has signed with Temple out of the transfer portal, head coach Adam Fisher and his staff can gameplan with the 6-foot-6, 185-pound junior instead of having to prepare to play against him. Njie joined us on The Scoop this week to talk about why he signed with Temple and why he believes his versatility, athleticism and shot-blocking ability will be an asset for the Owls this season.

Last week on The Scoop, Temple head coach Adam Fisher talked about why he was excited to bring USC transfer Jordan Marsh to Temple. This week, you’ll hear from Marsh himself in our 1-on-1 interview with the rising senior point guard. After averaging 18.8 points per game at UNC Asheville two seasons ago, Marsh entered the portal and nearly committed to Temple after a visit with the Owls before USC swooped in at the last minute to sign him.
When Marsh hit the portal again after this season, he said he didn’t need to think twice about where he wanted to go.
“I knew exactly where I wanted to be,” Marsh said of Temple.

Edwin Suarez Jr. arrived eight years ago in Reading with a dream of playing basketball in America and not knowing the language. Now, after stops at Muhlenberg High School, Arizona Western Junior College and Weber State, the 6-foot-6, 205-pound forward has transferred to Temple with the hope of providing some defense and rebounding to Adam Fisher’s frontcourt. After a career that spanned stints in the NFL, XFL and the CFL, former Temple quarterback PJ Walker announced his retirement earlier this month at the age of 31. The Owls’ all-time leading passer joined us on the podcast this week to reminisce about his time on North Broad Street with former head coach Matt Rhule, who later became his NFL head coach with the Carolina Panthers. Walker shared stories about the 2015 win over Penn State,the last-minute drive down at UCF that saved Temple’s season and vaulted the Owls to a 2016 American Conference championship, and the bonds he built with teammates like Jahad Thomas, Robby Anderson and Tyler Matakevich. And during his time with the Indianapolis Colts, Walker played for an offensive coordinator named Nick Sirianni.

After injuries cut his pro career short, former Temple star Shaun Bradley announced his retirement last Friday from the NFL. He joined us on The Scoop this week to talk about how he found peace with his decision and shared memories of his time as a single-digit linebacker with the Owls, becoming a 2020 sixth-round pick of his hometown Philadelphia Eagles, and what it meant play alongside guys like Darius Slay, Zach Baun, Fletcher Cox and Jason Kelce. After capping his time at Temple with third-team All-America and first-team all-conference honors, Matt Ioannidis forged a seven-year career in the NFL, including six seasons in Washington and one reunited with his former college head coach Matt Rhule with the Carolina Panthers. Jamai Felt, the reigning MAC freshman of the year, transferred to Temple from Bowling Green this spring and could give Owls head coach Adam Fisher the rim protector the program has lacked during the past two seasons. The 6-foot-10 Felt, who led the MAC with 46 blocked shots, joined The Scoop this week and talked to us about recovering from two ACL surgeries and why Temple was the right fit for him when he entered the NCAA’s transfer portal.
Felt, who is recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, said he will be ready for the start of preseason practice and the regular season. The shot-blocking numbers he put up last season, he said, are just a preview of things to come.
“Forty-six blocks is a lot,” Felt said, “but I'm trying to do more this year. Trying to get (American Athletic Conference) defensive player of the year for sure.”

Before Tim Terry became the Kansas City Chiefs' Director of Player Personnel and Pro Scouting, he built his football career at Temple as a defensive end in the Big East with Ron Dickerson-led teams that included fellow future NFL players like Lance Johnstone and Alshermond Singleton.
After earning his way into the NFL as an undrafted free agent, Terry spent five seasons in the league before eventually embarking upon a 13-year stint with the Green Bay Packers in their pro personnel office. The Chiefs hired him back in 2017, and whether it’s meant bringing in players like Patrick Mahomes, Isiah Pacheco or Xavier Worthy, Terry has had a hand in shaping a roster that’s now going for a third-straight Super Bowl title.

OwlScoop has confirmed that Temple Athletic Director Arthur Johnson has interviewed Syracuse defensive coordinator and former Owls defensive line coach Elijah Robinson, Sam Houston State head coach K.C. Keeler and Marshall head coach Charles Huff as he draws closer to finding Stan Drayton's replacement, and Negandhi offered some very compelling reasons for his top choice.
After a Philadelphia Business Journal story left some doubt about the future of Temple football, Temple President John Fry said the university wants to ‘honor and reinvigorate’ the program as it looks for its next head coach. We talked about where that search stands and if the Owls can close out the season with a win over North Texas.
And on his way out as Everett Withers enters his last game as Temple’s interim head coach, the longtime college football veteran did not hold back on his assessment of today’s game and what Temple must do to keep up with it.
“I hope this administration hears the need for finances to keep good players on this football team,” Withers said Monday during his weekly availability as Temple’s interim head coach.

Temple announced late Sunday morning that it has parted ways with head coach Stan Drayton less than 24 hours after the Owls posted an 18-15 overtime win over FAU. Defensive coordinator Everett Withers will coach Temple’s last two regular season games.

After leading New Mexico to the Mountain West Conference championship and into the NCAA Tournament, Jamal Mashburn Jr. entered the transfer portal and picked Temple, where he’ll take the floor for the Owls as a preseason first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection.
In his 1-on-1 interview with OwlScoop.com for this week’s episode of The Scoop, Mashburn Jr. said he’ll be playing his fair share of possessions on the ball as a point guard for second-year head coach Adam Fisher.
Mashburn Jr. has seen enough from his new teammates on and off the court to have him believing Temple could be playing some meaningful basketball in March.
“It’s just been a family-oriented deal over here,” Mashburn Jr. told OwlScoop. “All the players, they love me for who I truly am and who I authentically am, and we're able to have those tough conversations early, which is what a good team needs in order to succeed in January and February. So, it's just this group is great. I think we're going to do some special things. We just got to go out there and continue to stack days.”

As he walked in to greet a room of reporters last week, Temple wide receiver John Adams smiled and started with a little bit of humor.
"The president is back," he said, referencing of course that he shares a name with that of the second president of the United States.
Adams has every reason to be in a good mood these days. After working his way into Temple's wide receiver rotation as a walk-on last season and catching 15 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns, his season came to an early end with a broken leg in a road game at UAB.
Adams thought his chance of eventually earning a scholarship was over at that point, but he rehabbed, worked his way back and found out Monday night that he has indeed earned a scholarship, getting the news from his head coach Stan Drayton and from his mother, Louise Adams, on video.

Westtown School 4-star guard Cam Wallace, the 116th-ranked player in Rivals’ 2025 class, got the week off to a great start for the Owls when he announced his verbal commitment to Temple, and 3-star DME Academy forward Babatunde Durodola kept the energy going Friday when he announced he was reclassifying to the 2024 class and signing with Temple, giving the Owls a 6-foot-8, 200-pound forward who had a very solid summer on the Under Armour AAU Circuit with Canada Elite and played this past season down in Florida against the respective consensus No. 1 players in the 2024 and 2025 classes in Duke recruit Cooper Flagg and A.J. Dybantsa.

Temple and CFL Hall of Famer Henry Burris joined us on The Scoop this week to share memories from his career on North Broad Street as a record-setting quarterback out of Spiro, Oklahoma.
Burris, who recently returned to his alma mater back in May to serve as the Klein College of Media and Communication’s commencement speaker at the Liacouras Center, also established himself as a television personality in Canada on CTV Morning Live and TSN and said he used his Temple education to feel comfortable being on camera as a host and analyst.
On the field, Burris passed for 7,495 yards and 49 touchdowns against some great competition in the Big East from 1993 to 1996 and earned his way into the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent and saw stints with the Green Bay Packers, where he backed up Brett Favre and Doug Pederson. The relationship he forged with Pederson allowed him to land a spot on his Jacksonville Jaguars staff in 2022 as an offensive quality control coach. This season, he'll be the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Florida A&M.
In the CFL, Burris became a three-time Grey Cup champion, a two-time Grey Cup MVP and a two-time recipient of the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award -- and it all started with a tryout that had Burris throwing to guys off the street wearing slacks and Stacy Adams dress shoes.

It’s a cause that’s quite important to the redshirt-sophomore point guard, as his sister and mother have both been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease.

Temple’s Board of Trustees unanimously appointed John Fry as the university’s 15th president Wednesday morning, and we talked on this week’s episode of The Scoop about how Drexel’s former president might impact the Owls’ athletic programs.
Fry, who has served as Drexel’s president for the last 14 years and helped it raise more than $800 million over a five-year span from 2017 to 2022, spoke with The Temple News Wednesday about a number of topics, including athletics. After completing an internship back home in Milan with his Temple MBA program, Matteo Picarelli returned to North Broad Street this week to practice with some of the players who helped the Owls advance to the American Athletic Conference championship game, along with several more he hopes will lift Temple to a conference title and into the NCAA Tournament.
Transfer portal additions like Jamal Mashburn Jr., Lynn Greer III, Jameel Brown, Elijah Gray and Mohammed Keita could create more open looks for Temple’s best returning three-point shooter, and he hopes to do the same for them.
“Last year, maybe we didn't have as many threats from three, so teams were able to focus a lot of their attention on me,” Picarelli told OwlScoop.com. “Hopefully this year, with some more threats, it will open things up for me, and hopefully I can keep opening things up for others at the end of the day.”

Two years ago, Jahlil White capped off his redshirt freshman season by earning Big 5 Rookie of the Year honors while also being named to the American Athletic Conference All-Freshman team.
But as the Owls fell well short of their NCAA Tournament expectations this past season, White struggled with his scoring production and his confidence as part of a team that lost its way.
"I feel like we all kind of got a little bit selfish," White said Friday on this week's episode of The Scoop. "We thought about ourselves before the team sometimes, and it showed on the court. We weren't as connected as we should have been, and it showed. It takes much more than just having talent to be a successful team, and that was a clear example of it last year."

Thirty-five years after retiring from the NFL, Joe Klecko received the long-overdue news last month that he will be enshrined this summer in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, becoming the first former Temple player to receive the honor.
In a special episode of The Scoop, Klecko shared his remarkable life story with OwlScoop.com, one that started from modest beginnings in a working-class neighborhood in Chester, Pennsylvania just outside Philadelphia and grew to include stints as a truck driver, a Joe Frazier sparring partner, a semi-pro star with the Aston Knights and plenty of moments along the way in which he needed some encouragement from the most important people in his life, including his wife, Debbie, and the late former Temple coach Wayne Hardin, before he went on to a 12-year NFL career.

Aaron McKie heard from a good friend two days before it happened.
It was December of 1997, and the former Temple star was more than four seasons into his NBA career and happy where he was with the Detroit Pistons.
But that friend was on the other line, telling McKie there were radio rumors that he could be headed back to Philadelphia in a trade involving the 76ers. McKie had always dreamed of playing for his hometown team.
Just not now, he thought.
But six days before Christmas, McKie got the call. There was a plane waiting for him and teammate Theo Ratliff at the airport. They were headed to Philly, along with a future first-round draft choice, in exchange for center Eric Montross and guard Jerry Stackhouse. Philadelphia head coach Larry Brown had determined things just weren't working out with Stackhouse and future Hall of Famer Allen Iverson in the same backcourt, so it was time for a change.
It would prove to be a change for the better, but McKie admitted he didn't see it that way at the time.
"I'm just like, 'No .. to Philadelphia," McKie thought. "I'm going to my hometown, and they stink."
The Sixers weren't good at the time, but the culture, McKie said, started to shift,
"When you think it's a bad situation that you're going to," he said, "it's one of the best situations that happened to me from a basketball standpoint."
By 2001, the Sixers were the best team in the NBA's Eastern Conference. And although their run stopped short of an NBA title at the hands of a loaded Lakers team, it was a season that captivated the city of Philadelphia and proved to be a milestone in McKie's life.
Twenty years later and just a couple months removed from his second season as Temple's head coach, McKie can continue to look back fondly upon that 2001 season. He averaged what was then a career-high 11.6 points per game, posted consecutive triple doubles on an important West Coast road trip, and went on to win the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award.
McKie joined OwlScoop.com's podcast, The Scoop, Wednesday to reflect back upon that 2001 season. He talked about what the Sixth Man of the Year Award meant to him and why he felt he was able to be a mentor and friend to a Hall of Famer like Iverson, in addition to sharing some anecdotes about their time together as teammates.
McKie also has several reasons for optimism as he enters his third season on North Broad Street as Temple's head coach. He talked about what incoming recruits Hysier Miller, Zach Hicks and Wake Forest transfer Emmanuel Okpomo could bring to the Owls, and it sounds like former Wildwood Catholic High School standout Jahlil White could have a big role moving forward after missing his freshman season with a meniscus injury.

When Mardy Collins and Dustin Salisbery moved on from Temple to pursue their pro careers back in 2006 and 2007, respectively, they did so several credits shy of their undergraduate degrees.
Now, more than a decade later, the former Owls backcourt mates have completed their coursework and will be graduating Friday from Temple with degrees in African American Studies. They joined us for an exclusive interview on this week's OwlScoop.com podcast to talk about this milestone, their playing days, and their sons, Madden Collins and DeMahj Salisbery, who are turning into pretty good high school players in their own right.
Collins, a former first-round NBA Draft pick of the New York Knicks in 2006, and Salisbery, who had tryouts with several NBA teams in addition to several pro stops around the world in places like France and Tunisia, reflected on their time playing for the late Hall of Fame Coach John Chaney, and Salisbery talked about playing for former Owls head coach Fran Dunphy in his first season on North Broad Street.

Temple safety Amir Tyler joined The Scoop Thursday for an exclusive interview with the OwlScoop.com staff.
At a time when the Owls have seen several players enter the transfer portal, including quarterback Anthony Russo, linebacker Isaiah Graham-Mobley, defensive tackle Ifeanyi Maijeh and offensive lineman Vincent Picozzi, Tyler said he has no intention of following in their footsteps and intends to return for his final season of eligibility, one made possible by the NCAA to accommodate players due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Absolutely," Tyler told OwlScoop.com. "I'm not going nowhere."
Temple finished 1-6 this season in a pandemic-shortened season, and Tyler, who was awarded a single digit No. 3 prior to the start of the season, played in just six games this season and missed the ECU game with an injury. The team's veteran defensive back finished with 33 tackles, two passes defended and two fumble recoveries.
His decision to return will be critically important for a Temple team looking to rebound on both sides of the ball, particularly with a defense that will need an experienced leader to mentor younger safeties like Alex Odom, M.J. Griffin and Trey Blair.
"Temple just belongs to me," Tyler said. "Last year would have been my last year if it wasn't for COVID, so we had the blessing of me being able to play another year of college football, and I wouldn't think of going nowhere else."
Tyler cited his relationship with Temple head coach Rod Carey and safeties coach Tyler Yelk as one of the reasons why he's staying on North Broad Street and not following in the footsteps of some of his other former teammates who decided to leave.
"Out of all the position coaches that I've had since I've been at Temple, Coach Yelk has been by far one of the best coaches that I've had. His technique, his attention to detail, him just making me become an NFL safety. I feel like me getting to the next level, he'll be the perfect guy to get me there if I follow his instructions and do what I've got to do.
"And having Coach Carey behind my back ... Coach Carey, he's a player-led coach, so I feel I can learn a lot from Coach Carey and he can learn a lot from me. I just kind of have that connection with him. I feel like I don't want to just leave him out to dry for the last year, and I wouldn't want to go nowhere anyway."
Tyler talked a lot about how he has progressed and matured as a player, offered insight into the mood of the program after a frustrating season, and shared details about a childhood that saw him finally find a home with his adopted guardians after going through several foster homes.
Temple added 17 players to its 2021 class - 12 incoming freshmen and five transfers - and the OwlScoop.com staff takes a look at some of the key players, including Georgia transfer quarterback D'Wan Mathis.
