The Third Place podcast is a breath of fresh air.
It is an invitation to the grey... A space that is safe where deeper connections are fostered through challenging, empowering, and engaging dialogue.
We welcome you to explore the third place with us, where you will walk away with a deeper understanding of self, equipped to exchange with others in life’s complex conversations.
We thank you for listening, engaging, and supporting us, and we invite you into The Third Place
Mary and David reflect on the last two years of the Third Place Podcast and share what has been emerging in part because of this work.
Our society is in a moment where we need the principles of the Third Place now more than ever. As we wrestle with this difficult season, the question remains, how can we create safe places for ourselves and for others by offering postures of humility, curiosity, and offering generous perspectives.
Our hope is that you have learned to embodied the third place into your everyday lives and you feel equipped to offer a new depth and safety in all of your relationships. And as always, be well!

Lani is a well known coffee-writer and global food industry consultant, and has has published best-selling coffee books in the USA, Finland, Sweden, China, Korea, Thailand and the UK. In her work, she has written about the history of what a third place is through the lens of the coffee shop. She has over a decade of experience in every corner of the food industry (and every corner of the world), including serving as a barista in London.
This interview is a lot of fun and shows how important third places are in our lives. After talking with Lani, we would even say that to fully live this human experience is to include finding your own Third Place.
www.lanikingston.com
In addition to writing books about coffee, Lani has written culinary articles for a range of print magazines and newspapers; set-up and managed London’s largest bean-to-bar chocolate factory; headed up a cooking school run entirely with ‘food waste’; worked as one of Chef Dan Barber’s senior managers at his World 50 Best Restaurant Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Upstate New York; judged food and coffee for the UK’s prestigious annual Great Taste Awards; set up food brands and retail stores in Singapore; and traveled and researched food production and preparation all around the world.
With over a decade of experience in every corner of the industry (and every corner of the world), Lani saw first hand where food businesses were most in need of support. In response, she started a global food and beverage support agency, Four Seasons of Food, offering on-call, highly experienced and affordable staff for the movers and shakers of the food world.
What Lani loves most about her work is that she never stops exploring and learning. Throughout her career, she's been lucky enough to bake pies in English bakeries, learn about hunting reindeer from Fäviken’s gunsmith, tap maple trees in Wisconsin, mill flour in an 1800’s Lincolnshire windmill, cook Peranakan cakes with Singaporean grandmothers, eat rattlesnake in the Arizona desert, forage for wild food at River Cottage, spend Swedish Midsummer on a potato farm, venture deep under the streets of London to harvest herbs from disused Air Raid bunkers, harvest cacao with local farmers in the hills of Kerala, India – and much more!

Conflict. As the world has continued to recover from lockdowns and physically being with people, the environment has left us all in a tense state and it seems like conflicts are all around us. We don't like conflict and most try to avoid it at all costs.
That being said, it is one of the topics that we enjoy talking about the most - not because we love conflict, but because every relationship has it. And when you can “do conflict” well - when you can meet in that messy grey third place and bring in both perspectives - then it can really lead to new depths of relationship, which is such a beautiful gift.
Do you lead a team and are looking for help with resolving conflict, or developing a vibrant and healthy team culture? We would be happy to connect about our consulting work and how we could help you bring the Third Place to your organization.
Email us and we'll set up a time to connect at info@thirdplacepodcast.com

For many cisgender people who are working to become advocates for others, there can be a learning curve when it comes to using new pronouns for non-binary individuals.
One common hurdle for many people is that we are often surrounded by people who look like us. So when we have the opportunity to meet someone outside of our life’s experiences, and we can meet in a safe place to learn from each other, it’s a moment that we can come to treasure greatly in helping us to expand my worldviews.
That is why Mary and David were so happy to invite Silen Wellington the to podcast.
Silen Wellington is a member of the LGBTQ+ community and is striving to make the world a better place as the Alliance for Suicide Prevetion’s LGBTQ+ Youth Outreach Coordinator. Silen believes every young person needs a space to explore who they are and be witnessed for their unique gifts.
Silen’s background is in psychology and music composition, and they are passionate about mental health, advocacy, and community building. Outside of work, they enjoy world-building through performance art, harvesting stories, continual transformation, and unhinged-unfettered-unapologetic dance. Silen’s superpower is creating spaces where people feel safe to come closer to their authentic selves.

Middle School. Even saying this phrase can immediately bring up memories of awkwardness for many people. But it's also a formative time of life that gives us space to develop our relational skills and shape who we are. As we learn in our conversation with Chris Balme, there are new possibilities when we shift our perspective to view this as an opportunity to build into young people. This can radically change our perspective about this time and equip us as adults to be better guides for this foundational moment of life.
Click HERE to learn how to support Chris's Kickstarter campaign.
Chris Balme is an education leader, writing, and school founder, passionate about helping young people discover more of their human potential. As Co-Founder and Head of School at Millennium School, a lab school in San Francisco, Chris helped pioneer new learning methods for middle schoolers, based in developmental science. Chris then founded Argonaut, an online program to bring social-emotional learning to more students. He received the Ashoka Fellowship as a leading change-maker in education, and regularly speaks, trains, and writes for parents and teachers around the world. His book, Finding the Magic in Middle School is about how we can use developmental science to understand and enjoy the middle school years much more, whether we're parents, teachers, or in the broader education world, and will be released in September 2022.

Two years into the pandemic of COVID-19, many people are feeling overwhelmed and over stressed. Our nervous systems are exhausted and we can more easily be in heightened states of emotions, including our fight or flight responses. Polyvagal Theory gives us language to help us understand how our nervous systems processes our emotions in states of safety and in fight or flight, and can help us navigate how to better process and interact with others.
Deb Dana, LCSW is a clinician, consultant and author specializing in complex trauma. Her work is focused on using the lens of Polyvagal Theory to understand and resolve the impact of trauma, and creating ways of working that honor the role of the autonomic nervous system. She is a founding member of the Polyvagal Institute and developer of the signature Rhythm of Regulation Clinical Training Series. Deb is well known for translating Polyvagal Theory into a language and application that is both understandable and accessible - for clinicians and curious people alike.
Deb’s clinical work published with W.W. Norton includes The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy: Engaging the Rhythm of Regulation, Polyvagal Exercises for Safety and Connection: 50 Client Centered Practices, and the Polyvagal Flip Chart. She partners with Sounds True to bring her polyvagal perspective to a general audience through the audio program Befriending Your Nervous System: Looking Through the Lens of Polyvagal Theory and her print book Anchored: How to Befriend Your Nervous System Using Polyvagal Theory.

How do we talk about sex? When thinking about uncomfortable conversations, it’s always one of the first questions comes to mind. How and when do we talk about it with our kids? How do we talk about it with our partner? And in thinking about things like the “Me too” movement and realizing that we’re at an age when we need safer boundaries around sex and pursuing healthier masculinity and femininity, it’s one of the areas of life where we need to have better communication and language.

The New Year is often a time to take a pause and hit a reset button so to speak. Sometimes this includes new mindfulness practices, sometimes new diet or exercise routines… It seems like the best times to make changes or create new habits are when there is a pivotal moment in your life. Well, for our guest Jo Schaalman, it was when she was literally hit by a truck.
Jo was a state champion gymnast, a nationally ranked diver and a diving coach. While prepping for medical school she was t-boned by a semi-truck during a cross-country bike tour. As a result of the accident, Jo was told that she wouldn’t live a normal life, let alone become a doctor. Her recovery process was both physically and emotionally grueling, but through her healing she was able to unlock some universal healing principles that could not only help, but other people as well. These discoveries are key foundations of the Conscious Cleanse. Because of her experience, Jo is driven to help people who think healing is out of their reach. Although she never became a doctor, Jo has been able to fulfill her lifelong mission of helping people heal.
Jo has impacted thousands of people through the live online Conscious Cleanse and sold over 25,000 of their best selling Conscious Cleanse book.
Jo graduated with honors from Grinnell College with a degree in Biology and Pre-Med. She’s co-published papers on women’s health and reproduction while working with Dr. Newcomer at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She studied at a Master’s level at the Nutrition Therapy Institute and worked closely with Dr. Theron Randolph, the father of environmental medicine and clinical ecology. She is also a nationally recognized yoga teacher who has taught workshops around the country and has been featured on Gaiam TV and Yogadownload.

*This is a replay of one of our favorite episodes this past year!
If you've ever been told "you're too sensitive," you're probably immediately hearing that as a negative comment. But being a highly sensitive person is actually an innate and highly unique trait, and as HSP expert Julie Bjelland points out, it is not a disorder, but rather a trait that has helped us to evolve. People with this trait have specially developed abilities that helped them be good at finding food, mates, and a safe place for the tribe to live.
Nearly 20% of our population is considered Highly Sensitive, and in our conversation, we learn how to understand the experience of an HSP (highly sensitive person) so that we may tap into the gifts of sensitivity.
Julie Bjelland is a Psychotherapist, host of The HSP Podcast, and Founder of the Sensitive Empowerment Community, whose mission is to create a paradigm shift where sensitivity is embraced, valued and honored.
Empowering sensitive people to recognize, access, nurture and share their gifts, her Blog, Books, and Courses offer valuable resources. Get a free guide to calm your brain, and take the Sensitivity Quiz at JulieBjelland.com ❤️🌈❤️

We are replaying one of our favorite episodes from this past year!
The Third Place is about creating space to have hard conversations. However, part of what is necessary for creating the element of safety required to even begin to discuss these difficult topics is first ensuring that our basic needs are met. The ability to engage in difficult conversations is also a sign privilege. If you’re hungry and worried about where your next meal will come from for you and your family, then you simply do not have the capacity to think about greater issues. You just need food. So, what are our basic needs? And, how can we do the work of first helping meet those needs before we try to engage in dialogue?
Dr. Liz, as she is affectionately called by friends and colleagues alike, is a social psychologist specializing in how past relationships unconsciously influence or re-emerge in present relationships, for better or worse. Born and raised at the Jersey Shore, she moved to NYC to study psychology and philosophy at Barnard College ('05) and research clinical epidemiology at the NYS Psychiatric Institute. She received her Ph.D. in Social Psychology at NYU ('14) and has since been teaching a variety of courses on social and emotional development, cognition, and social behavior at University of Pennsylvania, Brooklyn College, and NYU.
Dr. Liz is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor and a Program Coordinator in the NYU Psychology Masters Program, where she teaches research, statistics, and social behavior, while working to keep the day-to-day runnings of the program in high gear. Arguably obsessed with social-cognition, and the ways in which our knowledge systems, needs, emotions, and behaviors are often unconsciously learned and become resistant to change, she is currently exploring in her research how the need for shared reality with others can interplay with experience to create meaning systems that shape one's values and worldviews.
Outside of work, Dr. Liz spends a lot of time with her extraordinarily large immediate family (including her own twin sister, Sarah), and has hobbies that include houseplants, running, hiking, cooking, beach life, and spending time in the "emo/post-hardcore" music scene.

Menstruation and Periods are a normal part of life. Actually, let's start that sentence over... Life would not exist without menstrual cycles. So, why is there so much stigma around the topic?
This week we welcome Kate Morton from Funk It Wellness to talk about menstruation and throughout our conversation, there were several eye opening, paradigm shift moments that came from talking about periods and women's menstrual health in a safe space. Many women are continuing to learn about their health many, many years after they have had their first period. But also, other conversations around work, business, productivity, living one's best life, and even removing the negative effects of patriarchal systems are all connected to having thoughtful and open communication about periods.
Kate Morton is a Registered Dietitian & the founder of Funk It Wellness. She has a master's degree in Human Clinical Nutrition that focuses on women's health and fertility.
Funk It is a menstrual health company that makes natural products to empower and support the entire cycle. We offer inclusive education and products that are both empowering and delicious.

She lives with her family of 4 in Colorado Springs, CO and currently works in Corporate Ethics for a well known defense contractor. Ellen is here to support anyone struggling now, anyone who is in recovery, or family members of those struggling.

"Hurt people, hurt people." This powerful and profound phrase holds so much truth. When you are a victim of any form of trauma, and you have the healing and ability needed to step back and look at the person who caused you pain, you can often find that the hurtful behavior patterns that someone exhibits stem from pain that another person had caused them earlier in their lives. We asked Tejal to join us today to specifically talk about Narcissistic behaviors and how these negative behavior patterns could be broken.
Tejal Patel is the host of the Time-In Talks Podcast, and author of The Mom’s Choice Gold Award winning book Meditation for Kids: 40 Activities to Manage Emotions, Ease Anxiety and Stay Focused and motivational speaker.
Her doable approach to family meditation and mindfully handling meltdowns (yours and your kids) sets her apart from the traditional self-help crowd and makes her a go-to expert for modern parents who want to NamaSLAY stress, snap less and raise mindful kids too.
Tejal V Patel is a former divorce attorney turned certified mindful parenting coach, breathwork, meditation and mindfulness expert for families.
Tejal has appeared in NBC10, Fox 29, Phl17, Pix 11, Yoga Journal, Parents Magazine, The Huffington Post, Us Weekly Magazine among other places spreading awareness about the Kids Can Meditate movement

In July, we shared a conversation with Beverly Horstman & David Lapp of Braver Angels - an organization formed shortly after the 2016 election to bring reds and blues together and heal the wounds between left and right.
Today we welcome Chris and Kim Watson, two active members of Braver Angels who find themselves on different sides of the aisle, but within their marriage. One of the core functions of politics is to work towards figuring out our social contracts with each other… What are our rules as we work, play and all live together. Marriage is similar in that we’re constantly working on how we live together in our homes - so very political, just on a much smaller scale. Mary and I were both very curious to learn from Chris and Kim what they have learned from each other while being on opposite sides of politics.
They have been married for 33 years and live in Oregonia, OH, about 30 miles north of Cincinnati.
Braver Angels was inspired by the words of Abraham Lincoln, who not only called on Americans to summon the “better angels” of our nature — but called on us to find the courage needed to pursue a more perfect union, “with malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right.”
To meet the current moment, at this time of national crisis, we need more than civility. We need to challenge ourselves to work together when we disagree. We need bravery.

We welcome back Sara Blanchard and Misasha Suzuki Graham of The Dear White Women podcast to tell us about their new book!
Sara and Misasha have become dear friends to The Third Place. They share with us why they wrote this book, and give their unique perspectives of race in America.
This book is amazing! So please, check it out! And also, be sure to review on Amazon!
WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?
This is a question that many seemingly well intentioned White people ask people of color. Yet, it places the responsibility to educate on their peers, friends, colleagues, and even strangers, rather than themselves. If you've ever asked or been asked "What can I do to help combat racism?" then Dear White Women: Let's Get (Un)comfortable Talking About Racism is the answer you're looking for.
From the creators of the award winning podcast Dear White Women, this book breaks down the psychology and barriers to meaningful race discussions for White people, contextualizing racism throughout American history in short, targeted chapters. Sara Blanchard and Misasha Suzuki Graham bring their insights to the page with:
Dear White Women challenges readers to encounter the hard questions about race (and racism) in order to push the needle of change in a positive direction.

Guns are the leading cause of death for those who die by suicide. Yet guns are so interwoven into our culture, thinking about reducing guns is a near impossible conversation to have - and it certainly does not allow for us to actually make an impact on reducing the number of people who die by suicide. But is it possible to dream about other solutions? Can we use technological advancements to make a difference? These are the conversations that Scott guides us through today.
Remember also that September is suicide awareness month, and we want to encourage you to take a couple moments and check out suicidepreventionlifeline.org and learn how we can all make a difference. The Lifeline network and its partners are working to change the conversation from suicide to suicide prevention, and to actions that can promote healing, help and give hope.
Scott Smith, MSW, has worked in the field of behavioral health and human services for over a decade. He began his social work career in k-12 education by implementing trauma informed strategies, restorative practices and substance use prevention frameworks both in the US and abroad. He has served on numerous boards and committees at the local and state levels and previously served as the President of the Southwest Colorado chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Currently, Scott works as the Executive Director of the Alliance for Suicide Prevention of Larimer County. He attended Fort Lewis College where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and later attended the University of Denver where he received his Masters in Social Work. We had never met a billionaire before and were curious to know what a day in the life was like! While we certainly had a lot of fun asking this question, Jim ALSO gave such great insight about entrepreneurship as we asked many questions about his book, The Innovation Stack: Building an Unbeatable Business One Crazy Idea at a Time. Jim's hope in writing the book was to empower everyday people to address some of our world's toughest problems through changing how we think about new ideas.
This interview is such a treat, and we think you’re really going to enjoy it! And, for what it’s worth, Jim doesn’t sound like a stereotypical billionaire, so we’ll still have to find another someday for different awkward questions!
Jim McKelvey is a serial entrepreneur, inventor, philanthropist, artist, and author of The Innovation Stack: Building an Unbeatable Business One Crazy Idea at a Time. He is the cofounder of Square, and served as the chairman of its board until 2010, and still serves on the Board of Directors. In 2011, his iconic card reader design was inducted into the Museum of Modern Art. McKelvey founded Invisibly, an ambitious project to rewire the economics of online content, in 2016. He is a Deputy Chair of the St. Louis Federal Reserve.

We continue our conversation with Steven D’Achille of the Alexis Joy foundation.
We do want to let you know that up front that part of this story is difficult to hear... it does have a tragic ending with his wife Alexis dying by suicide.
But there is also hope in the story. Beauty has formed out of the ashes, and through the Alexis Joy foundation, many women’s lives have been saved and positively impacted.
It’s also appropriate that this episode comes out during National Suicide Prevention Week. It’s such an important topic to talk through and resources are available for you or anyone you know struggling with suicidal thoughts.
Please check out the work of the Alexis Joy Foundation and share this episode and information to your friends and family.
From the moment Adriana arrived, Alexis seemed stressed. Once home, she felt out of control, with anxiety beyond the “normal” new mom worries. Though she sought help, she was not able to get the relief she needed from what was now obviously postpartum depression.
Clearly not seeing any other way out, she took her own life on October 10th, 2013, just 6 weeks after Adriana’s birth.
The way Alexis died was not the way she lived. She had a doting husband, a beautiful daughter, gorgeous home, great family and friends, and a fulfilling career – everything a girl could hope for. That’s why her passing was so tragic and unexpected. If she could feel that lost and alone, any woman can.
In the weeks after, Steven decided he would make it his mission to do what he could to stop something like this from happening again…To create a legacy for Adriana to carry on in her mother’s name.

Postpartum depression is a treatable medical illness that affects about 15-20% of women after giving birth. It can develop anywhere from a few weeks to a year after delivery, but it's most common in the first three months postpartum.
However, postpartum depression can be hard to spot, because the moodiness and other symptoms are similar to the "baby blues" — a short-lived state that affects up to 70% of new mothers. Only 15% of all women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including postpartum depression, ever receive professional treatment.
Steven shares his story of how his wife developed postpartum anxiety and why perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are not just issues for women, but for the family to work together through.
From the moment Adriana arrived, Alexis seemed stressed. Once home, she felt out of control, with anxiety beyond the “normal” new mom worries. Though she sought help, she was not able to get the relief she needed from what was now obviously postpartum depression.

Meeting and understanding one’s needs is a necessary ingredient in creating the emotional safety needed to have depth of conversation. So when we came across these basic goals from Sanatana teaching: Kama (pleasure), Artha (prosperity), Dharma (service), and Moksha (liberation)...
We instantly realized that learning about these aims of life are critical to understanding how to create that safe place for ourselves and for others.

When we hear the word "bias," it is often heard with a negative connotation. In reality, we all have bias and it's neither good nor bad. Ryan Wynett defines bias as "the attitude or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious manner."
Our biases are based on our personal experiences, and most often through indirect influences. Approximately 95% of all thinking is unconscious, and biases simply help our brains to make decisions process information quickly. Recognizing that we have bias is not intended to be an attack on our character, rather, it's up to us to choose what to do with bias when we see it show up in our minds.
Ryan Wynett is the Manager of Implicit Bias Initiatives at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

Death is a difficult conversation for all of us, but it's even more difficult when someone leaves this world too soon. The grief and soul searching of any parent who has lost a child is gut wrenching and unbearable.
Today, Regina Marie comes onto the podcast to share her story of tragically losing her two year old son, Joey. Regina openly and so vulnerably recounts the moment she lost her son and the many emotions that she was wrestling with during that tragic time, as well as how it impacted the shaping of finding a new purpose and path in life.
Disclaimer: Regina's story is powerful and heartbreaking. Be prepared to listen with tissues nearby!
Regina is a life coach who has now helped many others navigate death, grief, and loss - seeing that death is not experienced as solely the loss of a person, but also as a transformation and what one chooses to do with it that makes all the difference.

The vitriol in American politics was a problem long before Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and the 2020 election. Affective political polarization (not only disagreement on issues but personal contempt and distrust) has been growing between us for at least 25 years, and today there is evidence to suggest that we are now as polarized as we have been since the Civil War. Americans no longer see their political opponents as simply wrong or misguided. They see them as enemies who must be defeated at all costs.
Braver Angels was formed shortly after the 2016 election because they do not accept this division. They reject the normalizing of this extreme polarization and our work is about building civic trust in the USA, healing the wounds between left and right.
We welcome Beverly and David to The Third Place to learn how we can begin to see ourselves as fellow Americans once again.

In order to break the cycle of a pornography addiction, one of the most important things is to find someone who you can be vulnerable with, and who can hold you accountable.
So many people struggle with pornography in isolation, and they are afraid to tell others about their struggles in part because the addiction can also be a source of shame. Just the ability to tell a single person and realize that you're not a bad person if you have an addiction can be a huge weight off of people's shoulders.
We need to talk about pornography in safe places more, because hearing other people talk about it without shame is healing and helpful. Listen in as Jeremy continues sharing his story about how he was able to break free and become a light for others.
Many addictions have similar roots: behaviors or substances that help create temporary moments of pleasure to help us avoid real world pains and traumas.
In this first part of our interview, Jeremy shares how his personal addiction to pornography led to an existential moment of crisis, helping him to realize that his path was not leading towards his happiness; rather, his habit of pornography was contributing towards being unhappy and unfulfilled.
Join us as Jeremy shares his next steps in these moments to pursue Buddhist philosophies towards happiness. This pursuit with mindful practices helped him to see fundamentally why he was struggling with many addictive behaviors and gave him the tools needed to truly break destructive habits.
For many students in college, skills learned are based in theory and can sometimes lack practical application that real world experiences can teach. Helping students find valuable internships is a great way to bridge the gap.
Kristina's personal experiences of higher education as well as passions for coaching others led her to her work at Pathmatch, helping to equip students with practical skills through intern programs in businesses around the country.
Every Adoption and Infertility journey is unique. They each come with their own special circumstances, pains, traumas and moments of joy. Stories of adoption also include the precious life of another human being, yearning to be loved, to be known and to be a part of a family.
In this second half of our interview with Jesse and Doug, we go deeper into their experiences with adoption and foster care. Their story includes a beautiful and pivotal realization that it’s not about bringing children into your family’s story. Rather, you are brought into theirs.

Adoption doesn't heal infertility. They are in fact a separate series of painful and beautiful, difficult and emotional moments that 1 in 8 couples have to work through as the plan for a family.
After Jesse and Doug were married, they immediately began to make plans for having the large family they had always wanted. But after five years of trying to conceive, they discovered that they each have serious infertility issues. Going through a variety of infertility treatments over several years, it became obvious, they were not going to be able to conceive a child.
For Jesse and Doug, their story of infertility led them to the journey of adoption. What they did not anticipate was the moments of trauma caused by infertility still came through as they navigated through the adoption process.
We begin hearing their story in this first part of their interview.

In recognition of National Infertility Awareness Week (April 18-24), we wanted to bring in a different perspective of working through Infertility. What we have learned is that everyone’s family planning journey is very unique. Many’s stories end with much joy, but also, so many stories are extremely difficult to live through. And, unless you have struggled with infertility or with a pregnancy loss, you don’t realize how common it is and how uncommon it can be to welcome a healthy baby home.
Thankfully, today’s guest Ali Prato (host of the podcast Infertile AF) has helped create community around infertility, giving people a way to talk through and share their pain with others. This support system is a beautiful representation of The Third Place, allowing space for dialogue around one of our least talked about topics.

Many people dream of having kids and raising a family. Imagine the pain and shock when all of a sudden, that story becomes very difficult or simply impossible. Grief surrounds, and as with many painful experiences, those surrounding us often don't know what to say when they are trying to offer support.
This is a sensitive topic especially if you or someone you love struggles with infertility. Today's story ends with the birth of a child, but we and today's guest Nathalie acknowledge not all stories end in the same way. We hope that as Nathalie shares with us her experiences of processing her and her husband's emotions through their path of infertility, you can find a community of support or be a community of support for someone going through this painful journey.
The topic of Green and Renewable energy can clearly be an uncomfortable conversation with anyone who's livelihood is formed around fossil fuels. Not to mention, fossil fuels has been instrumental in all of our lifestyles. But it is also a much larger umbrella for many of our most uncomfortable conversations including global warming, economic and racial inequality, and how to transition different types of work and labor.
Our guest today is the founder of Quioveo Energy, Leo Alicante. Growing up on an island in West Africa, Leo witnessed how both the smallest changes in weather patterns and the influx of extractive energy industries deeply impacted his island people and their way of life. Access to energy on the island was unreliable at best and often would take advantage of the most vulnerable. Quioveo’s vision, rooted in Leo’s journey, is of a vibrant future, fueled by sustainable, affordable and accessible energy for all.
What happens when a successful entrepreneur is faced with crisis? And that crisis is a global pandemic... You anticipate a critical need, launch a new crowdfunding campaign, and make magic happen.
One common myth of entrepreneurship is that it's all on one amazing individual to carry others and bring an idea to life. The reality is quite the opposite! Entrepreneurship at its finest looks like casting vision, creating a team and empowering everyone’s unique and collective gifts.
Today we hear the inspiring story of how Angela Engel, founder of The Collective Book Studio, tapped into her innate spirit as an entrepreneur and engaged her network to launch a campaign for building lifesaving PPE for her community at the start of COVID-19.

You’ve heard it before… “New Year, New You!” We say screw that and instead suggest “New Year, Know You!” In this spirit, we kick off our January series on ways to truly get to know yourself. Our goal with dedicating a month to this content is to give everyone permission to first befriend themselves again as we are ever-evolving and changing beings. It is likely that the last year exposed parts of ourselves we had either never met, forgotten about, or rarely acknowledged. Whatever your experience, there is no time like the present to meet yourself again.
Over the coming weeks we will take deep dives into a variety of concepts, assessments, and tools that can support you in reintroducing yourself to yourself. Because when we are grounded in a sense of authentically knowing ourselves we can show up for ourselves and others more fully. It is our hope that from here, we can then move into tough, sticky topics that require us to be rooted in healthy and productive core truths about ourselves.

We find ourselves in a world textured with heightened emotions. From COVID, to race and gender issues and to our current political climate, we more often find ourselves in challenging, emotionally charged situations. Often, in these difficult moments, our emotions go straight to a fight or flight response, which only adds fuel to! So why does our mind work this way?
Understanding why and how our minds respond to heightened emotions will help us to put small actions in place to be prepared for tense conversations that are bound to happen. Because, it’s not IF they happen, but WHEN. And when they do, how can we prepare our responses and truly use difficult and charged conversations to deepen our relationships and find the grey, messy middle of the THIRD PLACE?

As we think about being the change we want to see in the world, we have come to realize that it first begins with an understanding of who we really are. And who we are is VERY complex! Personality assessments can be great tools to better understand how we think, process information, interact with others, and identify what motivates us. There is no perfect test, but they can be great tools to begin to unpack how we see the world and ultimately how we can change, adapt and better the relationships around us.

We’ve all heard it… that inner voice… “Who am I to do this? I’m not an expert! I’m not good enough!” From starting a business, to parenting, to putting art into the world; whatever it may be, it’s all creating something that others will see (and judge). While it’s easy to assume that the most “successful” people have never heard that voice or they already mastered how to quiet it, trust us when we say, everyone hears it… And it’s a voice that will show up again and again.
So what do we do with this voice? How do we push through and persevere? Can we silence it? Better yet, can we befriend this voice? In this episode, we talk through how to unpack our fears and insecurities so that they don't keep us from bringing our unique gifts to the world.

The idea of finding common ground from a variety of perspectives is a foundational idea of "a THIRD place." However, not all truths are found here. Especially as we are wrestling with addressing racism in our country, it is clear that many ideas and truths are in fact found in the black and white.
If LOVE and HATE are on opposite ends of a spectrum, our guide towards healing is not found in the middle ground. Leading with LOVE, which is on the far edge, is where we will find our true path.
