Suchitra Iyer’s album Sunaad, produced through her artist residency at Jack Straw, is a collection of Hindustani classical compositions by Indian-American composers from the Pacific Northwest. The album reflects the nurturing community of classical music practitioners who have created a space for shared learning and growth. The songs showcase different aspects of North Indian music, from lyrical to percussive to devotional.
Inspired by these mentors, Suchitra composed the music for a piece of poetry by 14th century female poet Soyrabai. In “Mazhe Mazhe,” the poet urges us to remove ourselves from the illusion of the world and stop pursuing material success. Suchitra is accompanied by Manoj Deshpande on tabla (drums) and Deepashri Joglekar on harmonium (keys). Sunaad is available on all major streaming services: https://linktr.ee/suchitraiyermusic

Trío Guadalevín’s project El Noroeste – produced in part through the Jack Straw Artist Support Program – is a musical exploration of the historic presence of Latinos in what is now Washington State. Serving all who want to learn more about the Pacific Northwest, it is a necessary project to acknowledge a legacy of more than two centuries, storied with contributions to the social and economic fabric of the Northwest. Inspired years ago as an effort to address omissions in the public understanding of Latinos’ role in this region, it has become a critical effort in an era of intentional misrepresentation, unfounded stereotypes, and cultural/racial intimidation.
Explore the videos, which feature the peoples and places that tell the story, and read a detailed account of the project at https://www.guadalevin.com/elnoroeste.
“Presente Estoy” – “I am here!” – addresses the 21st century challenges and promise of Latine communities in Washington, who live in and contribute to the economic and social well-being of every county in the state. Despite its contributions, this community continues to face discrepancies in education, employment, housing, and health. The population also endures persistent stereotypes, inflamed by an increase in dehumanizing anti-immigrant and anti-Latino rhetoric in popular media. This anthemic song centers on the dignity of peoples whose stories connect hard work, family, cultural tradition, and social innovation.

This week we feature one of the poems Gabriela Denise Frank recorded at Jack Straw as part of her 2025 Artist Support Program project, producing recordings of poems that will appear in installations and public-facing venues. “How to Live on a Damaged Planet” is a cento. Gabriela writes, “I chose this form, which involves stitching together borrowed lines of poetry, because it speaks to the fractured and chimeric nature of our planet and the creatures (humans and more-than-human) who are struggling to adapt to a world disrupted by climate change.”
“How to Live on a Damaged Planet” is made from lines from the two introductions to Arts of Living on a Damaged Planet, edited by Anna Tsing, Heather Swanson, Elaine Gan, and Nils Bubandt.
The art for this episode is a collage by the artist, titled “Persephone.” For Gabriela, “The analog process of working by hand—cutting images and shapes, pushing elements around on the page, letting them talk to each other and move several times before anything permanent happens—is essential to my approach. For me, mixed media collage is a physical ecotone of exchange between archetypes, symbols, synchronicities, the hand, the mind, the subconscious, and the collective unconscious: an [im]possibility space where creatures and forms that have no earthly business with each other can meet, interact, and react to reveal truths about “reality” more accurately than realism can. The remixed nature of collage reflects the hybridity of the world we live in.”

In its original form, Jack Straw Artist Scott Morgan (aka loscil)’s project Adrift is a collection of 4 pieces of endless music presented as a mobile application. The application uses structured random selection to continuously play the discrete musical components with no beginning or end. The pieces were conceived as aural backdrops, seascapes of sound in which the listener is encouraged to drift in and out of. Each of the four pieces is named after an infamous ghost ship.
As of 2025 the app is no longer functional. This piece comes from a collection of four linear renders of the music from the Adrift application, representing a singular version of each of the pieces. You can hear and download the whole collection via Bandcamp.

In Shadows, produced in part through the Jack Straw Artist Support Program, is a multi-generational collaborative composition between composer Mako Kikuchi and the Omoide Project, a collective of Seattle-based writers whose work remembers and preserves the wartime experiences and legacies of Japanese America. The creation of this album began in remembrance of the 80th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942 by Franklin D. Roosevelt. While not explicitly naming the Japanese community, this order authorized the forced removal of all individuals deemed a threat to national security. In total, over 125,000 individuals of Japanese ancestry were incarcerated, approximately two-thirds of whom were American citizens. Kikuchi and the Omoide writers bring the sounds, memories, and emotions of this experience into the present. In Shadows bears witness to the deep trauma that resides in those who experienced and those who are descended from this incarceration.

“Juanita” is a new song from Jack Straw resident artist Nacha Mendez‘s forthcoming full-length album, produced with support from the Jack Straw Artist Support Program.
Nacha writes, “This is my Pride month offering, the breakup song Juanita. . . . I recorded this in Nov. 2023 at Jack Straw . . . I sat with it for 2 1/2 years. I wrote it when I started to date Juanita, but the words emerged after the break up. The song traveled to Seattle, Santa Fe and Los Angeles. It features Stephen Duros on guitar and bass, Rafael Herrera on percussion. Thank you to Camelia Jade, who engineered the first tracks at Jack Straw. Thank you to Jon Gagan of Electric Co. Studios, my collaborator of many years Stephen Duros, and lastly to my producer and friend Steve Peters.”
Lyric translation:
I sincerely offer you this song
There will be a day when you’ll see me on the street
You will say, that I look lovely and well,
I will say the same about you
Too bad our beauty couldn’t hold us up
It’s nothing you’ve said or done
I finally reached the depths of my soul to find you once again
You told me that you thought we were friends, and I thought we were more than just friends
The sign on your door said, hope doesn’t live here, keep walking
I wish you the best, it’s true, yes
Keep walking Juanita, Keep walking
That kiss you gave me, lasted forever
Damn kiss woke me up
You played with my heart, you did it to confuse me
Keep walking Juanita, Keep walking
I wish you the best, it’s true, yes.

Gabriela Denise Frank‘s “( yubəč / chinook )” are paired concrete poems in the shape of salmon, one heading downstream to the ocean, the other heading upstream to spawn. They were published in the I Sing the Salmon Home anthology (Empty Bowl Press) edited by former Washington state poet laureate Rena Priest. They were written to honor the cultural and biological significance of salmon, a keystone species upon whose wellbeing numerous plant and animal species—including humans!—depend. Yubəč is the Lushootseed word for chinook salmon.

This story is excerpted from Grey Eagle’s audio collection Hear the Wolf: Native American & Sami Stories, produced in 1994, the first year of the Jack Straw Artist Support Program. Ken Jackson, aka Grey Eagle, was born April 27, 2023 and died in 2008. You can read more about him and his legacy at the website of his sons’ family business.
From the liner notes of the Hear the Wolf cassette: “Most Native people believe we are actually related to all other creatures. When the relationship is sensitive, respectful, and balanced, it forms a Sacred Circle. We two-legged have received special gifts from our four-legged relative, Wolf. We’ve been given many lessons by Wolf. These lessons are recounted in stories of American Indians and Sami, the Native People of North Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Grey Eagle retells these stories in his own words. It is his way of returning the gifts – the gifts of strong stories and the gifts of lasting lessons. Hearing the stories lets us learn our lessons from Wolf and understand that we can all live together in a Sacred Circle.”

“Story-keeping—the UN-[TITLED] Oral History series” is a soundscape of music and oral histories heard during performances of the UN-[TITLED] Project. As a series of offerings and invitations created in collaboration with theater and community artists and architects, UN-[TITLED] is an immersive, multisite-specific project that centers on the ways in which communities are displaced by gentrification. Guests are guided through a series of engagements and reckonings with community meaning, cultural memory, and healing in the Central and Chinatown International Districts of Seattle.
About the UN-[TITLED] Oral Histories: “This is an Oral History series of Seattle residents as part of the UN-[TITLED] project–a space of reflection on where we all fit on the spectrum of gentrification, and the shifting story of home in Seattle. Over the last 25 years, the historically redlined areas of Central and Chinatown International Districts have weathered widespread rapid development that has economically displaced and culturally dispersed the communities that once occupied these spaces. An intergenerational group of community residents who claim deep roots in these districts were invited to participate in this series—to share their experiences and memories of growing up, living, or working in these neighborhoods. It is a chorus of unique voices who claim multiple cultures and heritages, with varying economic backgrounds, jobs, professions, and identities. They each offer charged and moving contributions as story-keepers for their beloved neighborhoods. This series holds space for listening and reflection on where we fit on the spectrum of gentrification, and into the shifting story of home in this city. We are thankful and honor the generosity of every participant who shared what needs to be said and heard about how gentrification has directly impacted them, their street blocks, their families, their friends, their memories, and their sense of place. Together they offer to us a sacred vessel of legacy-keeping and memory-making for displaced and surviving communities.”
Visit the project website to hear, see, and read more about UN-[TITLED].

About this song, LaVon writes, “I wrote ‘Walks with Robert’ in the winter of 2020 and everyone was huddled inside hiding from COVID, and the recent snow seemed to emphasize the stillness and solitude of what everyone was feeling. I remember looking out my front window and feeling the dreamlike state of snowfall. The way it muffles and slows everything down, how it brings everything to a stop. It felt like nothing was happening and I was anxious that I would be put in this holding pattern forever. But looking outside, I was reminded that life was still happening, I just couldn’t see it, and this pause is part of livingness.”
